*I've been thinking a little about the upcoming Mesa Marathon. I am worried that my body isn't ready for another attempt at a sub 3 hour marathon. Just thinking about it stresses me out. So I am going to take a different approach on this marathon. I'll try to run really conservative and finish strong (something I have never done in a marathon). Who knows maybe I'll still run a solid time. I am just tired of going for 3 then falling apart at the end anyways. My body and mind just need a little break from it all.

PM- Got a head start on running in the desert towards Sand Hill. I even ran up Water Tank waiting for the team. Jumped in with the boys who were bombing down hills. Then we ran across a Minnesota lady high centered on a rock with her BMW. The boys helped her out by pushing, adding rocks under the tires, and directing. She was very grateful for the help. I had a hard time staying with the boys on the sandy uphills. I successfully caught up once we hit some downhill. The rain was coming down pretty strong. | | Marieta met with Janz and Mia at Mia's house so I started my run from there. Ran through the Springs and new neighborhoods there. Connected to the trail system and on to the Dixie Center, side trail behind Chic Fila. There's a new trail section that connects close to the Skate park. Ran the COVID 200 section Aaron created then ran back the way I came and past Ava's spot. Coincidentally ran into my Mom at the cemetery. Stopped for a minute to chat. Then ran home from there. Goal was to run marathon pace and keep my chill miles under 8. Did a set of 4, 3, 2, 2 sets with chill mile in between.

Mesa Marathon (26.36 Miles) 03:08:49, Place overall: 196, Place in age division: 31 | | There was some drama before the race. Ross wanted to gamble it all and not ride the bus. He figured worse case scenario we would run about a mile to the start line with all the road closures. Then I realized I forgot my bib at my aunt's house 5 minutes after we left. So we had to turn around and a cop yelled at my Dad for going the wrong way on a partially shut down road. Lucky he didn't get a ticket.....Then some lights flashed as he sped through an intersection and now I will be getting a ticket because it was my car...To make things worse a road my Dad thought we could take was closed off. Marieta, my Mom, and I convinced him to talk to the cop patrolling the road and see if we could find a way closer to the course. The cop said our best bet was to run the 2.5 miles to start line from that point. It was around 6:10 at this point with a 6:30 race start. I accepted out fate and was ready to start jogging to the start. My Dad was still convinced he could find a closer path and was mad "we made him" talk to the cop. I told him its not that big of a deal but running an extra 2.5 miles was really going to suck for him. I left him as he was still arguing with my Mom.
As I began my slow jog towards the start I made a decision to not let my Dad stress me out and shrugged it all off. I even enjoyed the jog a little bit. It was dark with a full moon. Fireworks were going off and then the race started. The runners cruised past me as I ran the opposite direction looking for a bathroom. I spent some time in the bathroom, set up my airpods and watch and mentally checked in for the race. I'm 90% sure I was the last person to start the race. My Dad even started before me.
It was hard not to run super fast with 2,000 runners in front of me but I found a good 6:45-7:00 pace. I passed my Dad on the only climb of the race. I was locked in on hitting conservative low 7 minute miles. It took a while to find that. At the half way point I convinced my brain I was doing a reset on everything. Every mile behind me did not matter. I was in a new race, a much more tiring race. As the miles went by I was still feeling comfy. I was expecting Marieta and my Mom to get me some electrolyte drinks between miles 13-17. I wasn't sure when it was going to happen but I was excited for it. Then around mile 18 I saw my car off to the side of the course and they hadn't seen me yet. So I yelled "Marieta" and they just weren't ready to help me and I wasn't going to stop for them (I was rolling). Once again I found myself accepting my fate and that I wasn't going to get the drinks I planned on. I was a little nervous that the aid station materials weren't going to be sufficient for me. Luckily, right around mile 20 Marieta was there with my drinks. Marieta was a freaking bad a and popped open the tab to my Mt. Dew energy drink as she was handing it to me. Then I said "give me both" and she ran to catch up and give me my electrolyte drink. I enjoyed the taste of pure energy in a can. I probably spilled half of it on my face. I was ready to hammer down the last 6 miles and see how close to 3 hours I could get. Mile 21 was not kind to me. I felt a little pulsating in my quad and I thought, "this is my nightmare!" Charleston and STG memories came swirling back in my mind. I saw myself lying on the ground with baseball sized cramps in my quads. I heard the voice of Coleman making fun of me for falling over. I slowed down to hopefully alleviate the chance of my cramping. Any time I accelerated I could feel my body wanting to seize up. So I settled for 7:30-7:40s for the last couple of miles. I knew if I tried to hammer down and run the way I wanted, there was a good chance I would cramp up. Then I would end up running like a 3:20-3:30 marathon. So I coasted to the finish to secure a sub 3:10 marathon. I think it was the right move. Overall I think this was my best marathon ever! Beaver was faster by time but today there was no falling apart. I didn't walk once and I kept all my miles under 8 minutes.

Sprinter Ryder started out really fast and I got out in 2nd place. I really didn't want him to win because not many people bet on him. He signed up right before we went out to the field. About 2 laps in I even told Talmage that he or I needed to win. I felt good and I have a little better chugging form from experience. Ryder threw up and I knew the race was mine. About 200 meters into the final lap I turned around and didn't see anyone close enough to catch up. Talmage took 2nd and Kevin 3rd. Brook 1st, Coach W 2nd, and Kate 3rd. Fun race! Lake to Lake Relay (50.2 Miles) 06:09:18, Place overall: 6, Place in age division: 2 | | I could not pass up on my favorite race! I told Ross that my calf was not going to be able to run 25+ miles. So we threw together the best 5 person team that we could. Marieta was recruited to run 1 leg, George was called upon to show some grit. Then Skyler came through as our MVP recruit (someone who has actually been running and in good shape). The team was assembled and I think we all overperformed. I was able to muster out 2 legs without my calf exploding. I was able to find the pace correct for each mile. Had I ran faster at any given moment I think my calf would've ruined me.
Of course after the race I had to follow the Lake to Lake tradition and jump into the Lake. I did it once and I was totally fine, other than the water being super cold. Then George wanted to join in too. I did a second jump to make George happy. I even suggested we high five in the air. I jumped off my injured leg and felt a tear in my calf. I got too cocky after surviving my runs and now I am paying the price like a moron!
Leg 3: Ran smooth and conversative, focusing on running a decent time for the team wihout injuring things further.
4.25 miles 31:02/7:19 mi
Leg 7: I actually felt worse on this leg but knew it was my last leg for the day so I played a little more risky. It will be nice to run again without feeling like I am being held back.

| | AM- What a tough run. I struggled to get my right calf to loosen up. I was kind of ok with having issues with my right leg (because it never happens). 5 miles of a steady climb was very difficult. I focused on mindfulness to get through. Then once I finally got to the Broad Hollow turn it was a very nice run. Met up with Ross once I got off BH. This Saturday run made up for some of the garbage earlier in the week. 12.16 miles
PM- Almost got ran over by the Holts 🙆♂️ on my way to look for the rock. Running away from my problems. Got down and dirty looking for the dang Summit Rock. Someone needs to find that thing before people destroy everything by exit 13….. 6.42 miles

| | Crew of Derek H, Reese, and Metler this morning. I really had to go the bathroom as I dropped down to Veyo. My Veyo climb was a pathetic 8:48 mile. Probably from all the uphill I ran this week. Felt much better after a quick stop at the Red Mountain Trailhead. Ross found me shortly after my pit stop anf I left him to start some tempo. Did about 6 miles of tempo then a little break climbing Winchester. I really wanted to hammer down the last 3-4 miles but my calf struggled on the last couple of downhills. Beaver Canyon Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:31:46, Place overall: 15, Place in age division: 3 | | New marathon, similar result. I had the worst migraine of my life Friday night, safe to say my sleep was terrible. Even on the bus ride up the canyon my right temple was still aching but eventually went away. I started out strong and did my best to survive the early uphills (almost broke my back). Then I just cruised down the rest of the crazy downhills. Around mile 11 or 12 I noticed my right foot back towards the heel was giving me discomfort. I thought I had a rock in my shoe. So right around mile 13 I stopped to get the rock out. There was no rock. I stopped again about a quarter mile later (at the steepest drop of the whole race) to investigate. A huge blister was forming. It was squishy and uncomfortable but I knew that wasn’t going to stop me. I know I heel strike a lot but I believe the blister was formed because I wear my shoes really loose. My left ankle always swells on long runs because of a preexisting injury so I’m accustomed to just wearing my shoes loose.
To prevent quad cramps I over prepared for this race. I wore an ultraspire pack for the first 22 miles to make sure I had more hydration and “anti cramping materials”. I garffed down probably like 3 bananas hoping that potassium would save my legs. By mile 23 none of that mattered. I was already slowing significantly by mile 20, but I thought I would mentally just take it mile by mile. See if I could find something towards the end. My quads started to cramp. My calves would give me shots of pain as if they wanted to cramp up too. I just hobbled in for the last 3 miles. Ross caught up with me around mile 24. I tried to run with him but had nothing to give.
I’m bummed I keep facing similar problems. The blister was a new issue for me. I’m thankful my running crew of supporters. Shout out to Kaelynn for house accommodations. She also crushed it in the half marathon! Time to lose weight (for real this time) and plan the next adventure.
