| | I really wanted to get out and run today. However, I hunted all day and got a cow elk. I destroyed my body hiking and carrying 100s of pounds of meat. So at least I got a good work out in.
|
|
| | Hurricane Rim Trail with the crew. I started really slow and sluggish. My body feels thrashed from my elk hunt. I ran with girls and talked with Maura. Then at 3 I turned around to catch Nathan. He was too fast so I backed off and ran a little bit back on the trail. Then I ran the last 1.6 fast with Luke, Scottie, Jason, Gabe, and Bryan. Awesome trail! 6.36 miles

| | I felt nauseous all day so running was not that great but I kept telling myself to go a little further. City Creek with the boys then I made a quick turn around to find everyone else staggered about closer to Owens. Not a great start to what I thought would be a promising week. In the grand scheme of things it should be fine. 4.41 miles

Headed out for 50 with G and the boys and Beattie. I backed off from Allen and Gianno to check on Gary, Eli, and others. Somehow Beattie and G lost track of Allen so I ran back towards target looking for him. I had no luck and figured he went up and over foremaster. Got back to school and found him. | | Woke up to a phone call of my dad wanting to go on a run. We left a car at the end of diagonal and drove up Turkey farm in another car. Parked at Black Gulch and headed out on Lange's Dugway. 6 miles on a trail, super nice conservative pace. Then we got down to highway 18 and the tempo began. I started out with some 7's then poured it on. I waited for my Dad to catch up at mile 6. It was a mistake! I lost some of my momentum. I didn't know I was ready for this run but it worked out decently. 15.08 miles

| | A couple of years ago I told my Dad how I wanted to run from Oak Grove to St. George. He didn't like the idea and thought it would be too hard. Well today was the day we tried it out! We drove a couple miles up the Oak Grove road because we knew that time was working against us. We started right around 6. I was pretty optimistic for the first 7ish miles then the climbs kept coming. I didn't expect to have that much climbing. Miles 8-10.5 were the worst. By the time we started getting some rolling hills my legs were already hammered. I endured and made it to the pavement on the turkey farm road. I think if we had more daylight I would have tacked on more mileage. So maybe not the full distance I once envisioned but still a really good workout. 19.25 miles
|
Hoka Napali Red Miles: 19.25 |
|
|
| | AM- Shake out run! Bloomington Loop with Manzanita addition. Almost had some people traffic jams on the loop. I understand why people are out and about. Just different seeing people in places I used to run alone. 4.05 miles

side note: I made a deal with myself that if I got a new mileage record then I would end my soda lent early. Baja Blast Baby!

|
| | Parked my car right where the dirt starts on Turkey Farm road. I was determined to run up to the Broken Mesa trailhead. In the first mile my left knee was hurting pretty good. I debated turning around early but decided to carry on. I ran by the Yellow Knolls trailhead and saw 11 cars. 11 cars? I don't even think that is a very cool trail but it is getting a lot of attention. After 5.5 miles of decent pain I arrived at the Broken Mesa TH and made a decision to hike for a little bit to rest the knee. Once I got to the top I just took it easy and the more time I spent running the less pain I felt in my knee. I'm not sure how it happened but I was thankful things worked out. Broken Mesa was awesome, running the Powerline back to the car was my least favorite part. I am loving the speedgoats! 14.01 miles

| | AM- Drove out to exit 27 Black Ridge rd. I found a single track trail and ran that for 4.25 miles. I really enjoyed it! It probably connects to the single track I ran a couple of weeks back from exit 2. I did a negative split on the way back. It was more uphill and I had a headwind and dropped 2 minutes. 8.51 miles
PM- Went and explored around Gunlock looking for petroglyphs with Marieta, George, and Star. It was a lot of fun and we were successful in our goal. 3.67 miles

I started out really conservative but strong. The first 3 miles were straight uphill. The trail was more rugged and not maintained very well. Both Ross and I pushed well but were overwhelmed by the climbs. I had been wanting to do a challenging trail run so I'm grateful I got out today.
Saw Steve Ott's dad, Logan Hall and Josh Hardman on the trail. When we got to Forsyth trailhead my Dad biked back to the Whipple trailhead to get my car. I ran to the church and saw T-Rav Roberts cruise by me.

Cool down with Jason and Luke after the race.
It was a really good race! I do blame myself for becoming complacent and not pushing harder on those last couple of miles. I should've trusted my legs more instead of fearing that I might fall apart if I pushed harder. Overall fun experience! Luke, Jason, Janz, and Josie ran well! Good day for PVXC alumni/coaches!
PM- 2 mile shake out with Marieta.

|
| | I woke up super early to get that mileage before the team run in PV. My stomach slowed my process so I ran 1.5 before meeting up with Julien. I didn't see many cars going by so I was a nervous I was in the wrong spot. Then our team showed but no Snow Canyon. We were supposed to meet up at 6:45. By 7 we started without SC. I worked my way up to the top boys and pushed on the paved trail then on some cool dirt single track. It was my first run with top boys all season. The last 2 miles were quick and I pushed some low 6s with Hyrum and Bentley. Added another 6 miles up the Gardner Peak trail. I didn't stay on the trail that climbed up to the peak but defaulted to a flatter trail that popped me out by the church. Cooled off in the creek to wrap things up. 16.01 miles

|
|
| | I bought the Carbon Xs and had to test them out. They felt great! I could tell they wanted to go faster but I was in a sluggish funk after Sunday dinner. I'll save them for fast long runs. 2.20 miles

Pioneer Day 2 miler (2 Miles) 00:11:39, Place in age division: 2 | | AM- Fun race this morning with the team! My goal was to be right around 12 minutes. The Carbon Xs felt great when I was running fast. I mixed in with Dane, Gary, Grant, and Trey. I would've liked to run another mile to see how I would've handled it. A 2 mile race is foreign to me. Added with Jason, Hyrum, Scottie, and Holt. 9.51 miles

| | AM- 1 mile warm up by myself. Then a 90 minute run with the top girls. Best run of the week for sure! I ran with Brinley, Pyper, Alli, Jenna, Adri, Emma, Maddy, Kennis, Kyanne, Allison, and Allen. I had one goal, keep the girls together. The run was more downhill on the way out and tougher uphill on the way back. I did my best to motivate and keep the group together. I helped the girls stay focused on the present (something that really helped me too). It was great! I've enjoyed my runs with the girls. It takes more effort on my part to socialize and motivate but it's a good challenge. We started to lose our solid group at around 55 minutes so we did some refocusing. Some refocused, others found excuses. I'm going to remember this run for a while. 11.07 miles
PM- Tired 25 catching up to different groups. 2.59 miles
|
Hoka Speedgoat 3 Miles: 13.66 |

|
| | Hill run with the team. I started with Coach Quinn and the upper JV boys. Then I floated around with different groups and encouraged group running. Found the varsity girls for the turn around and had some good conversations with them and Zack DT. Then I ran back up the road and ran a little with Scottie and Dave. 7.13 miles
I really enjoyed this years camp! I put a lot of effort into being positive and helping kids enjoy themselves! I also dominated KamJam with Coach Quinn (14-1). I was a part of a Cinderella Story volley run with Little B, Nathan B, and JD. We lost in the finals.....but we got revenge on Gabe and Jason for being traitors. I'm excited for the season! I'm positive we will make the best of it!

Hoka Speedgoat 3 Miles: 7.13 |

| |
| | AM- Started at Tropic Reservoir and headed towards one of the few single track trails in the area (that I’m aware of). There was some good uphill pushing to Keyhole Arch. It wasn’t anything crazy but I had a hard time breathing on the hills. I walked a couple of times. Then I stopped and meditated in the shade. I refocused and continued on without having to walk. Added some mileage after I got back to the reservoir. Swam in a creek to cool off. 9.32 miles
PM- Took Marieta to Keyhole Arch and made a loop out of it back to the ATV. I took off down the road until Marieta picked me up. I pushed hard for half a mile at a sub 6 minute pace. 4.31 miles
|
Hoka Instinct 2 Miles: 4.31 | Hoka Speedgoat 3 Miles: 9.32 |

|
| | AM- Parked at the Podunk Ranger Station. Ran on the main road for 7+ miles scaring cows and saw one buck. Then I took an atv trail and banged my toe on a rock. I worked really hard on not focusing on time or looking at my watch. It helped! Then I made it to the Swapp Canyon Trail where I ran down a single track for a quarter mile. Although I was interested continuing on this trail I was already at 9 miles so I decided to turn around. Trail back was smooth but hard. Then I came within 20 feet of 3 big bucks. I stopped and backed off to see what those big boys were going to do. I watched them for 15 minutes before they crossed a road in front of me. This run was a good mental test for me. It also showed how good my endurance is. I added a little after I got back to my car. 19.04 miles
PM- Went for a hill climb and jog. 1.15 miles
|
Hoka Instinct 2 Miles: 1.15 | Hoka Speedgoat 3 Miles: 19.04 |

| | Miserable run! I woke up early and headed up Willis Creek. It was really cold and I had a hard time warming up waiting for the sun. Then I tripped on a rock and fell on my wrist. I felt really light headed and almost passed out so I layed down for 5-10 minutes. Then I somehow milked 7 more miles. Once I got back to cabin I wrapped up in a bunch of blankets and fell asleep. 9.02 miles

I was able to run with the PV coaching legend duo. I probably should have run with boys but wasn't feeling all that great (my tummy was hurting) so I didn't think I could keep up. The girls ran strong together for some longer CV minutes. I mixed in at the back trying to encourage Kennis, Kyanne, and Amelia. I stopped 8.5 miles into it for hydration. I ran into my Dad and thought he was going to run with me but he comtinued on up the course. 11 miles into the run I realized I was putting in a pretty good pace for a half marathon so continued cruising for 13 miles (including my first 2 miles). | | Woke up early and ran a mile before meeting up with Ross. We ran through the desert above Middleton. He wanted to go all the way up then down all of Green Springs and back to his house. I told him I didn't have time with a 7:30 practice. He initially disagreed then realized I was right. So we decided to take it left towards Turkey Farm. I booked it down TF posting a 6:44 then a 6:03. Got to the team just in time to start our workout at PVMS. Ran some 4 minute race pace and CV intervals. Great time running with the girls! 15.89 miles

| | 70 minute with 20 minute power running. I ran with the top girls up Turkey Farm. I really enjoyed running in the darkness and the cool air was nice. The girls ran solid and together. There was a little drama at an intersection. Some girls got left behind. I didn't realize it was Brooklyn and Alli until the damage was done. I knew Maddy was back because she usually falls behind and expects the girls to always come back to her. I made a split second decision and lived with it. The girls that made it through the light ran very strong together for the last 7-10 minutes of the power running. This will probably be my last long run for the week. 8.84 miles
|
|
|
| | Just ran the one practice in the afternoon. I went in and out of feeling really loose and good. Ran 4X4 minute race pace intervals with level 1/2 boys. Saw some good efforts from the crew. Coleman was the only boy going 4 (for some reason) so we mixed in with the varsity girls on the last 4. Everyone pushed and ran a great interval. Then cool. 6.69 miles

| Race: |
Beaver Canyon Half Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:06:33, Place overall: 13, Place in age division: 1 | | I'm proud of my efforts today. I focused on being positive and ran solid (pretty easy on a downhill race). Miles 2, 4, and 5 were pretty tough climbs, especially 4. I felt it was only fair to have some steep climbs with all the downhill. I'm glad those miles came early. I was competitive and stayed in the top 8-10 range and chased people down. Then at times I was all alone for miles. I had a lot of internal conversations with myself. When I hit 10 miles "oh shit I still have 16 miles" or at 18 "oh balls I still have 8 miles left." Then I would reassure myself "you'll be fine just keep rolling." I survived a little longer until my IT bands flared up around mile 21. Maybe I'm not supposed to run races above 20 miles? A part of me wonders how I would've fared on STG's course today with a little less bruising mileage. I want to train for another marathon and lose some weight and I know I can run sub 3. Just need to strengthen the ITs.
Thoughts I had from today and the Cedar Invite:
-Many runners seem to focus on advantageous courses rather than the effort they will put out on the race. They blame bad races on a bad course. It made me realize I don't want to do that. I want to put out a good effort on any given race and not worry about courses or times so much.
-Positivity is something you need to keep spreading around. I had a lot of people talk negatively about this race with the downhill and crazy elevation. Although those are legitimate factors, I didn't worry about it too much and I was much better off for not buying what others were selling. Had I been a little more positive in those last 5 miles I might have been able to pull off a sub 3. However, the pain (undeniably terrible) definitely bogged me down with negative thoughts.

| | Chuckwalla a little with the girls, the boys, and a lot by myself. I made a bone head mistake and turned around too early trying to ditch the girls and start the run with the boys. I forgot there was a 30 minute time difference (not 15). It worked out ok. I felt pretty good, best post marathon run yet. Then when the varsity boys caught me I realized maybe my legs were still hammered. I had a hard time keeeping up on the uphill. On the downhill I followed Holt and Scottie. Good run with some pain. Weights after with Marieta. 8.53 miles

| | Practiced at where it all began today. Mixed in with both varsity crews again. I tried spreading positivity all around (some don't appreciate it). Girls ran well and kept the pack together on some fast paced intervals. I wasn't feeling that great all run, must've been the kim chi. Bentley was struggling to keep up with the lead pack. For some reason he thought "shirtless Decker" would help him run faster. So I popped off the shirt and he ran a little better. Weird kids! I'm excited for State! 9.01 miles

George found me at the Arrow and we ran to another ridge overlooking Bloomington and onto the loop. 7.43 miles

| | AM- Ran the Capstone 50k course with my Dad and George. My Dad is pretty sure he has the course down. It took me a while to warm up. I slowed Ross and George down (which meant more recovery time for them). After the hard steep miles I warmed up. I wanted to do the loop twice (like the race will be). I even stored a kickstart energy drink at the start line to drink in between laps, to see if my stomach could handle it. Some jagoff stole it! I was pretty bummed. I went and bought a new one and ran a little extra just to do the experiment. Stomach was fine. 8.06 miles

| | Ran the Capstone course. I wasn't planning on running that far the day before the race but I really wanted to see the course. I really like it! Obviously it's much different than what I ran last week (slower and longer) but still fun to run. 6.46 miles

Capstone Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:58:06, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 2 | | I got out hard and lead the race for the first 3 miles then my friend Zach Holt passed me. I was strong on the uphills. At around 4 miles another dude was right on my butt so I let him pass and tailed him the rest of the loop. I think he was trying to ditch me. Then some biker tried passing me but I told him I was racing so I wasn't going to pull off to the side. There were several paths he could've taken to avoid the racers. I yelled out "freakin bikers" to the runner in front of the me and he responded with something about being a biker. Then I put my earbud back in because I didn't want to hear what he had to say. I wanted to let loose and pass the guy on the downhill stretch but there wasn't much room. So I started to plan my attack for the 2nd loop. We got to the transition/finish area and home boy stopped. He was a 10k runner. He said: "I wouldn't have raced you if I knew you were doing the half." Marieta handed me a kickstart and I took a sip and charged into the 2nd loop. At this point I knew no one was going to catch me and that I was going to take 2nd to Zach. I kind of wish there were some more runners around to help me attack the hills. I was all by myself and did my best to keep competing. I walked a little on the 2 worst uphill sections. Then the last 2.5 miles I cruised! I was going up this hill and I started cramping in my inner thigh/groin area. I was really nervous I was going to suffer through that and have to walk. Luckily it only cramped when going uphill. So I shortened my stride and dug in for the last 2 miles. I had a really strong last mile! I like me some trail racin!
