"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka
"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

| | i chose to not run today. expect more of the same throughout the month of january. really enjoying the downtime. anticipating a lot of quality x-training with the shoveling of the snow over the next couple of days.
|
| |
| | taking extreme non-running to a whole 'nother level this week!! at least my weight is remaining stable...
|
| |
| | a full week with no run. i feel awesome! so this break has given me a new perspective about this running blog. in the back of my mind are little creeping doubts about getting back to the mileage in a couple of weeks. will i have the motivation? do i even want to keep running consistently this year, and keep trying to incrementally bring down my race times etc? checking in on other runners everyday here on the blog and reading about their workouts and experiences is so motivating! right now my mind and body are in hibernation mode, but i can feel the excitement percolating in the back of my "being". and that's in large part because i'm able to stay in touch with the spirit of this crazy sport through Fast Running Blog. so, you know, thanks fellow bloggers.

i was going to run today but work got crazy, and it's cold, and i AM taking the month of January off basically - so i just let it go. maybe tomorrow. my purpose this month is to put running on the back burner, which is actually easier than it sounds. my weight is starting to creep up. i'm living the dream.
|
| |
| | even though the running is very sparse this month, i'm still trying to keep my blog active with posts like this one which say nothing. in terms of weather conditions i picked a good month to take a break. well, that's all for now. it was nice visiting with you all. have a great day.

6 miles / 8:50 avg. this morning while driving i noticed that the rio grande parkway in farmington had been plowed! this is unprecedented! so i drove to an access point and ran from there. taking the parkway all the way to the the 1/4 mile farmington creek trail that loops around the fairgrounds, which is also plowed. this means that my work commute run is on when i feel up to it again. also, i don't have to drive to the next town to run on the parkway, which i've been doing as i generally avoid the roads when i can in the winter. | | 9.1 miles / 8:55 avg. in an effort to shake myself from this life of dedicated inertia i've been living lately, i hitched a ride to work with my wife, therefore committing myself to a commute run home. don't know how wise a decision that is given my recent lack of training, but i knew that if i just took it easy i would be fine. i was fine, and the weather was spectacular. shorts (of course) and short sleeves! a good run. hot-n-easy 5 miles on the boardwalk at the nature preserve. everything this week is going really well, except for getting the running in. this is the plight of the hobby jogger. WT 20.3 miles *the garmin 205 that i've had since i started this blog almost 5 years ago finally gave up the ghost. almost 13,000 miles of running and i never had any issues with it (i dropped it on concrete once and lost the audio, but after a while the audio came and went randomly. also, just once could i not get the satellite to load, i have no idea why). i was still getting 10+ hours on the battery between charges right up to the end. now i'm watchless until the new one arrives. *though only a hobby jogger, and running about 1/4 of the mileage i ran last year, my weight, after shooting up 10 pounds by the end of March, is now back down to within a pound of what it was in december after having run 370+ days in a row. i attribute this to good ol' calorie reduction (much less carbs), which is easy to manage when you're not really running any miles.

splits: 7:43, 7:42, 7:45, 8:23, 8:13 - i started off at what for me is a good pace (slightly better than half marathon pace) for the first three miles, but then crashed hard after that. excuses are as follows: 1) very poor sleep 2) hot - i started the run at 10:30 am. 3) age - i'm nearly half a century old! and, 4) genetic endowment, of which speed was not included.
i'm still happy with the effort as it indicates that i've gained a little more fitness over the last couple of months as i work to dig myself out of the lethargy i've rutted myself into.

| | 6 miles / 8:40 avg. first run on a treadmill in over 4 years. i got a new(used) treadmill a few weeks ago and i've been keeping it here at work until we move into our new(used) house (hopefully later this week!). today was a good day to try my first run on it. works great. kept it at a 1% incline. it's got a little fan on it which doesn't really do much but gives a little flutter of air once in a while. looking forward to doing a lot of speedwork on the machine this winter.
i haven't been running much lately so it felt really good to sweat a little today.

| | wow. i'm sure not a runner these day. we closed on the house, and are in the process of moving in. the combination of having a house on the market and buying a new one (well, old actually, built in 1909), has provided this hobby jogger with the perfect excuse to forego running for a while. hopefully things will settle down next week and i can get back into a routine.
|
|
| | 5 miles - after a full ten days off in a row. first commute to the new house. got home in 4.2 miles and added on to get 5. the commute is generally downhill from home to work and thus uphill getting back home but the course is rolling so it's a nice mix. looking forward to running around the cemetery which is on the route.

|
| | the Year of the Hobby Jogger comes to a close. i'm proud to say that this years mileage is the least i have run since i started up running again (and started here on the blog). my first year back was 2008, and i covered 1,317 miles. this year i ran 1,177 miles. plus, i ended the year with my lowest mileage month with decembers total coming in at an ignoble 33 miles.
here's a breakdown of the last 6 years total mileages:
2008 - 1,317
2009 - 2,654
2010 - 2,578
2011 - 2,618
2012 - 3,083
2013 - 1,177
- i ran 174 times in 2013 (compared to 390+ times in 2012) and netted an average 6.7 miles per run.
- so yeah, i took full advantage of my hobby jogger status this year. i basically ran only when i really wanted to and it was convenient. i also didn't race at all in 2013. so i should be fully rested up now and ready to start training again. planning to start off slowly and carefully though. as it happens i am under the weather these last couple of days - so no runs until i feel better.
