"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Man I'm glad you started up again I was trying to pick up your slack and have actually made it three in a row:) Jk but I was a little freaked out by your days off.

Sun comes up, JD runs, Sun sets. I've been used to that for over a year and BAM. Was it hard to not run?

a full week with no run. i feel awesome!

so this break has given me a new perspective about this running blog. in the back of my mind are little creeping doubts about getting back to the mileage in a couple of weeks. will i have the motivation? do i even want to keep running consistently this year, and keep trying to incrementally bring down my race times etc? checking in on other runners everyday here on the blog and reading about their workouts and experiences is so motivating! right now my mind and body are in hibernation mode, but i can feel the excitement percolating in the back of my "being". and that's in large part because i'm able to stay in touch with the spirit of this crazy sport through Fast Running Blog.

so, you know, thanks fellow bloggers.

I think a month would be a better time frame for the weight loss. It took a month to put them on; parsimony dictates it should take a month to remove them. That is, if you believe in parsimony. Myself, I'm not really sure.

9.1 miles / 8:55 avg. in an effort to shake myself from this life of dedicated inertia i've been living lately, i hitched a ride to work with my wife, therefore committing myself to a commute run home. don't know how wise a decision that is given my recent lack of training, but i knew that if i just took it easy i would be fine. i was fine, and the weather was spectacular. shorts (of course) and short sleeves! a good run.

this is, without a doubt, the best phrase i've seen in quite some time.

From JD on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 12:31:04 from 70.96.78.188

hey Scott - i'm just enjoying some down time. for the last four years i've averaged 50+ miles per week. and after completing my goal of running everyday last year, i decided to take a big break. i hadn't originally planned on such and extended break, but i'm actually at peace with putting my energies and focus elsewhere for a bit. i do plan on building back some mileage starting in March. this has been a good winter to lay low. :-)

thanks for checking in.

you are absolutely rocking the winter/mountain runs this year. it's gonna be a good one for you.

pm edit: so i took a look back at my running one year ago and now am wondering who that person was last year. pretty motivating to read through the whole month (although August 2012 was pretty insane for me as well). i suppose i can get to that kind of mileage again - but i'm not as motivated without some kind of goal. here's to a safe buildup these next few weeks.

a year ago my total mileage for the year up through March 12th was 551.3 miles. this year? 148.1 miles...hi, my name is James, and i'm a hobby jogger...

Hobby jogger? Nah. You can't always be on. Physically and mentally you'll break down. I think the break you've had the last 10 weeks will allow you to assimilate all the mileage from last year, and take things to a new level. If a goal starts the itch, great. Otherwise, I'd wait till something strikes a chord. Forcing miles just for miles sake is de-motivating.

You proved consistency in 2012. While you ramp up, don't forget the old 10% rule...

*though only a hobby jogger, and running about 1/4 of the mileage i ran last year, my weight, after shooting up 10 pounds by the end of March, is now back down to within a pound of what it was in december after having run 370+ days in a row. i attribute this to good ol' calorie reduction (much less carbs), which is easy to manage when you're not really running any miles.

awesome! some great finds in there -- looks like you found a lot of commons + a few sketchys. it really is crazy how much you can pick up in a small area.

From JD on Fri, Aug 09, 2013 at 20:57:06 from 67.42.16.190

yeah allie - it was actually a rewarding thing to do. unfortunately there were a couple of items that i had to leave behind as they seemed to be of a more "personal" nature. (ew! sorry.)

From allie on Fri, Aug 09, 2013 at 21:06:06 from 97.126.222.234

From Lysa on Sat, Aug 10, 2013 at 09:22:26 from 24.10.147.236

nice garbage finding you two! There is an old man in my hood that walks around every single morning with a grocery bag and picks up garbage. He is in his 90's now and still does it. He got an award for being a good citizen in the community. Apparently he's been doing it for like 30 years or something. So awesome.

From allie on Sat, Aug 10, 2013 at 11:25:55 from 97.126.222.234

lysa - that's awesome -- kudos the old man in your hood.

the garbage run was inspired by another old man (or maybe the same one?) who we saw one day while we were out running. he had a bag clipped to his waist and was casually picking up garbage on his morning walk. it was really cool to see this, and to think about the impact it could have if everyone dedicated just one run/walk to garbage finding fun.

it's amazing how much trash is around -- everywhere. today we filled two trash bags in about 1/4 mile of running.

really, only taking eight days off is pretty good, considering your project. i hope it's going well. glad you could get a run in today.

thank you allie - i'll write you into the dedication.

i feel okay about taking the time off from running. if i were training this year, i would've found the time to run. i picked a good year to be a hobby jogger...

6 miles / 8:40 avg. first run on a treadmill in over 4 years. i got a new(used) treadmill a few weeks ago and i've been keeping it here at work until we move into our new(used) house (hopefully later this week!). today was a good day to try my first run on it. works great. kept it at a 1% incline. it's got a little fan on it which doesn't really do much but gives a little flutter of air once in a while. looking forward to doing a lot of speedwork on the machine this winter.

i haven't been running much lately so it felt really good to sweat a little today.

wow. i'm sure not a runner these day. we closed on the house, and are in the process of moving in. the combination of having a house on the market and buying a new one (well, old actually, built in 1909), has provided this hobby jogger with the perfect excuse to forego running for a while. hopefully things will settle down next week and i can get back into a routine.

the Year of the Hobby Jogger comes to a close. i'm proud to say that this years mileage is the least i have run since i started up running again (and started here on the blog). my first year back was 2008, and i covered 1,317 miles. this year i ran 1,177 miles. plus, i ended the year with my lowest mileage month with decembers total coming in at an ignoble 33 miles.

here's a breakdown of the last 6 years total mileages:

2008 - 1,317

2009 - 2,654

2010 - 2,578

2011 - 2,618

2012 - 3,083

2013 - 1,177

- i ran 174 times in 2013 (compared to 390+ times in 2012) and netted an average 6.7 miles per run.

- so yeah, i took full advantage of my hobby jogger status this year.  i basically ran only when i really wanted to and it was convenient. i also didn't race at all in 2013. so i should be fully rested up now and ready to start training again. planning to start off slowly and carefully though. as it happens i am under the weather these last couple of days - so no runs until i feel better.
