"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka
"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

| | This cold (the virus kind, not the temperature) is still hanging on. I was able to run in spite of it this week but it has been chipping away at my energy level. Going for complete rest this New Years day. Ironically, after two weeks or so of sub freezing temps, today is upper 30's and I'm not running. Happy 2010!
|
| |
| | 10 miles / 1:31:40 / 9:10 avg. Mostly sunny, 35 degrees, breeze out of NW. Cattle road. Easy pace today because: A: The cattle rd was packed snow/slush/ice. B: Still battling this cold, (low energy, stuffy head, cough), and C: I'm slow.
|
|
| |
| | 7.1 miles / 8:55 avg. Sunny, 33 degrees. Clark/glovers lane. Nothing there today. In fact, I ran progressively slower as the miles went by. Nice to get out and run though.

| | 8.25 miles / 1:09:27 / 8:24 avg. Murky sunshine, 29 degrees. From work and about. Splits: 8:53, 8:19, 8:14, 8:24, 8:25, 8:31, 8:21, 8:12 + .25 @ 7:40 pace.

11 miles / 1:34:45 / 8:36 avg. Noon-thirty. Bluff trail, overhaze, 30 degrees. Started off slow. At mile 3 (9:32) I was feeling that weak, dizzy feeling I get from time to time. I almost turned around and headed back at that point. I started feeling much better around 5 miles so on the way back I focused on running faster for miles 8 and 10. As usual, optimism wins again. Splits: 8:44, 8:54, 9:32, 8:53, 8:31, 8:35, 8:42, 7:43, 8:55, 7:37, 8:36.

20 miles / 2:53:49 / 8:41 avg. Overcast skies, 30 degrees, light wind out of NNW. Ran all over Northwest Davis County. Fastest mile was 8:06, slowest was 9:08. Felt pretty good until the last couple. At approximately miles 8 and 16, was back at my car for fuel/hydration, although my total intake for the run was 3/4 of a banana and about 12 oz of water. I had plenty of energy throughout the run, just cramped up a bit towards the end. I reached 10 miles in 1:25:13 (8:31 avg), and 13.1 miles in 1:52:28 (8:35 avg.), and then finished up the 20 with an avg. pace of 8:41...so I slowed down quite a bit the second half of the run. Got to work on that. But otherwise happy, and grateful that I am still running and improving.

| | 7.5 miles / 9:19 avg. Drove twenty miles East up Weber canyon to get out of the gunky air of the valley. It was worth the drive as the skies were crystal clear and I could see for miles. Parked in Peterson and ran along "Old Highway Road", basically a frontage road. Had some good long steady climbs and descents both going out and coming back. Still in recovery mode from Saturdays effort. |

| | Started feeling a little funky last night. Didn't sleep well, and felt loopy at work this morning. Came home early feeling mildly lymph nodie. Just got up from a two hour nap and feel ...well, not worse really. So I'm not going to push it today ( I wanted to run long), and hopefully I'll be good to go tomorrow. After a 34 mile week, and two days off in a row, I'd better feel like a rock -n-roller. |

I'm so excited about this I just had to share it with anyone who might read my blog today... I get to run on the treadmill tonight!!!!!! 5.5 miles / 47:31 / 8:39 avg. On the TM. It was all I imagined it would be, and more.

10 miles / 1:26:24 / 8:38 avg. Hazy sunshine, 32 degrees. One mile boardwalk loops at the nature preserve. (Had the place to myself). Intentional progression run. It's a challenge to try to increase you pace each mile by just a little, because if you increase too much from one mile to the next, it's hard to keep up. Mile splits: 9:29, 9:02, 8:57, 8:48, 8:38, 8:38, 8:28, 8:15, 8:05, 7:57.

| | 8 miles / 9:45 avg. A muddy slog out on the dykes of the bird refuge with the dogs. So muddy in some places I had to stop and re-tie my shoes because the weight of the mud was threatening to pull them off. A lot of fun! When I got back to my jeep, the moon had just risen in the East above snow capped mountains, and the sun was just sinking in the West. The moon looked extra white against the blue sky. The effect of all this color felt like turquoise on my mind. A beautiful evening. Rest day tomorrow.

|
| |
| | 16 / 2:18:20 / 8:38 avg. Noon. Mostly cloudy, 36 degrees. Cold wind. Bluff trail / roads around West Davis County. Started out too fast with the first three miles at 8:18, 8:19, 8:10 then ran around MP (8:30) for most of the rest of the run with some 8:50's and a 9:00 for the 14th mile. The last mile was 8:33. Overall felt okay. Legs are a little weak. Probably from running mostly flat parkway trails most of the Winter. I should also add that I didn't take in any water or food during this run. |

| | 8.6 miles / 1:15:00 / 8:43 avg. Early lunch run from work. Sunny, 39 degrees. Took quite awhile to warm up today. One of the greatest feelings is when the body finally loosens up, the effort becomes easy, and the body feels strong. Mile splits: 9:26, 9:14, 9:03, 8:35, 8:34, 8:32, 8:30, 8:15, + .6 mi. @ 8:07 pace. Hey whattayouknow - an unintentional progression run!

| | 6 miles / 47:33 / 7:55 avg. Lunch run, Bluff trail. Overcast, 39 degrees. I didn't pick a good day to try to run hard. I struggled the whole way and just never opened up. Still a good effort for me. Mile splits: 8:15, 8:00, 7:59, 7:53, 7:53, 7:30.

| | Easy 8 / 9:32 avg. Noon. Bluff trail. Mostly cloudy, 40 degrees. |
|
| |
| | 10 miles / 1:23:28 / 8:20 avg. Late run (2:30 PM) on the legacy parkway trail. Sunny, 47F. Shorts, glove liners, and for the first time in several weeks just a single long sleeve top. Suffered through some gastrointestinal acrobatics throughout the run. Actually had to "stop and drop" in mile 9. Very rare for me. It might have been the Great Harvest ham and cheese sandwich I had for lunch. I snarfed it down pretty quickly and only about a half hour before the run. Mile splits, 8:55, 8:23, 8:32, 8:31, 8:27, 7:51, 8:04, 8:13, 8:29, 8:00.
Rest tomorrow.

| | Easy medium-long run. 14.2 miles / 9:04 avg. Cloudy, sunny, light rain at times, low 40's. Was planning on a longer run but the body wouldn't cooperate so I cut it short. I'm fine with having an off day. What concerns me though is the idea that an off day could fall on race day. If I felt like this in the first ten miles of a marathon, I'd have to just drop out. Happy to get in the miles today in spite of the lack of energy and heavy legs. No computer access for me until tomorrow night. What will I do with all that free time?
|
|
| |
| | No running today. At about mile 2 into my 14 mile run yesterday, the outside arch of my right foot started hurting. It wasn't bad enough to stop running. Though it was sore the rest of the day and last night, it didn't feel like it was getting any worse. Today it feels better but is still present. So I decided not to run and give another day to heal. I hope that's all it needs. This week is going to be an easy week anyway as work is going to be crazy. |
| |
| | 8.6 miles / 1:14:54 / 8:43 avg. Lunch run from work. Sunny, 38F. Lot's of energy today and legs felt great. Went easy so as to not aggravate the arch situation in my right foot. No arch pain! But the back of my right heel felt pretty tender. This is a chronic condition I've had for several months, but today it felt worse. I assume the arch pain is related to the heel pain etc. Going to continue monitoring everything and run easy this week. Mile splits: 9:03, 9:06, 8:47, 8:52, 8:43, 8:43, 8:29, 8:19, +.6 @ 8:04 pace. ( I like to speed up at the end of my runs).

AM - Easy commute run. 9.1 miles / 9:52 avg. from home to work. It's been awhile since I've run early in the morning. I've always wanted to run to work but couldn't figure out a route that wouldn't involve lots of rush hour traffic and narrows shoulders etc. Thanks to Andy (on the blog), who had blogged about running on the "Kaysville Poop Trail" as he calls it, or KPT, I suddenly had my route. The trail lays over an old rail line, and I didn't know it existed. It's a 3.7 mile run from my house to get to the trail and it spits me out about a mile from my work place. Perfect. The first two miles from my house there is some traffic to deal with, but then it's quiet secondary streets, and then of course the trail way, which is very peaceful and has a rural element to it. The last mile of the run is mostly a low traffic residential street and then a cut through a bank parking lot and then across Main street which fronts our shop. I ran a very easy pace this morning and just enjoyed being in slow motion.
PM- Ran home. 9.1 miles / 8:21 avg. The run home was the most fun I've had on a run in a while. Mile splits: 8:05, 8:23, 8:16, 8:39, 837, 8:11, 8:19, 8:23, 8:23, + .1 @ 7:44 pace.

| | 11.3 miles / 1:33:16 / 8:15 avg. Commute run from work to home w/extension. Started around 2:00 PM. Felt pretty good today and thought maybe I'd try to get a 1/2 marathon PR until I started falling off, hard, in mile ten. So I cut it short. Mile splits: 8:04, 8:08, 8:11, 8:30, 8:16, 7:50, 8:05, 8:18, 8:15, 8:34, 8:37, +.3 @ 8:00 pace.

6.2 miles / 52:22 / 8:26 avg. I was in Salt Lake this afternoon so I decided to run while there. I grew up in S.L. and I miss all the great running places. I parked at the capitol and took "gravity Hill" and 11th Ave to Virginia St. and came back. Going out was a steady climb, coming back a steady descent. Temps in the low 40's and light rain were nice conditions to run in. I had a faster mile coming back (downhill), but generally tried to keep this an easy run to recover from yesterday. Mile splits: 9:08, 9:07, 8:49, 8:23, 7:24, 8:00, + .2 @ 7:22 pace.

I don't know why I chose 9.5 MPH for the intervals but it was too fast. I wanted to do more but I was fried. I definitely need to do more speed work. It hurts, I need more hurt in my training.

| | 20 miles / 9:25 avg. Commute run from home. 30F, clear skies. Meandered around West Farmington for about 7 or 8 miles then headed North to Layton via the KPT. Got to work around 15 miles, got a drink of water, took a bite of banana, shed my pants and jacket (leaving two layer top and shorts), and ran the rest around neighborhoods in town. Pretty consistent, slow pace until the last mile which was the slowest mile of the run. My legs really started to crumble during the last mile. Possible Andy B. sighting on the KP,. passing in opposite directions.

Splits: 7:36, 7:25, 7:39, 7:41, 7:31

| | 10.5 miles / 1:28:41 / 8:26 avg. Mostly cloudy, windy, 56F. Warm! After work, drove to the LPT, ran out and back. |

| | No running today. I thought I might get out and run 6.6 miles so I could get 200 miles for the month. But alas, I'm tired. I've run the last eight days in a row. I did get the dogs out for a short easy hike this morning, and there will be some light yardwork this afternoon. Other than that I'm laying low. Relaxing. Eating. I'm so glad March is here.

13.1 miles / 1:48:34 / 8:17 avg. Extended commute run home. Sunny, upper 40's. This is a half marathon PR for me by about 8 seconds. My PR was from Ogden last May. I ran the Ogden course slightly long, plus most of that course is downhill. So I believe today's training run signifies substantial improvement. Mile splits: 8:18, 8:19, 8:16, 8:35, 8:24, 7:58, 8:11, 8:20, 8:32, 8:14, 8:17, 8:09, 8:10, + .1 mi.@7:26 pace.

| | 20 miles / just seconds ahead of the 9 mm guy. Bluff Trail / West Davis Co. Mostly overcast, 50 - ish degrees, light winds. Felt okay today. Not good, not bad, just okay. I ran 20 miles two weeks ago, so I feel good being able to do 20 today, and 25 secs avg. per mile faster. Shorts and short sleeves too. I stopped at my car at miles 10.5 and 17.5 for a swig of water and some banana. With the temps warming up, I'm going to have to start carrying water on the longer runs again. |
|
| |
| | 6 miles / 9:08 avg. Recovery run. Overcast, 47 degrees, light wind/rain at times. Took the dog down to the 1/2 mile track at the mystery field. Legs felt a little heavy the first couple of miles but everything loosened up nicely by the end. I ran the 6th mile barefoot on the grass with some striders thrown in. It felt so good to get those huge, cushiony, wave riders off my feet and run barefoot! Quite a contrast. I think the Mizuno's are going to be relegated to trail running shoes only. |

| | 12 miles / 1:42:07 / 8:30 avg. From house. Cloudy, 42 degrees, varying degrees of rainfall. I can see what Snoqualmie sees in this kind of weather from a running perspective. I wore shorts, long sleeve tech, glove liners, and cap. This was a pretty hilly route. Garmin sais 1600 ft. up and down for the course. My splits are all over the place. Took 3 miles to warm up. Mile 7 was a conscious break (9:08), all the other splits were determined by the terrain. Mile splits: 8:52, 8:39, 8:41, 8:17, 8:16, 8:04, 9:08, 8:20, 8:37, 8:15, 8:38, 8:14.

| | Decided not to run today. I was going to run, but changed my mind. This day off, plus my low mileage week last week should leave me well rested and I can start increasing my mileage for the next few weeks. I'm stuffing myself with carbs today, in the form of thin mints.

14 miles / 1:53:36 / 8:06 avg. Commute run from work. Upper 30's temp, wind around 10 MPH from the W (mostly cross wind for me), mostly sunny. 1/2 marathon PR by about 2:40! 13.1 miles in 1:45:56 (8:05 avg.)
After the first 4 miles, I realized I was feeling pretty good and decided to do a 6 mile tempo at my goal half marathon pace. After mile ten, I had finished the tempo portion and let off the pace but realized I was in for a good HM PR on today's training run so I tried to keep pushing a bit. The funny thing is I almost called off the run today because I woke up this morning feeling a little nauseous and my joints were sore. Also, I didn't start the run until 1:00 PM, and I spent most of the day whining and obsessing about the crappy weather. Fortunately I decided to go ahead and get a run in because it went really well! Mile splits: 8:31, 8:17, 8:21, 8:29, {7:56, 7:46, 7:48, 7:56, 7:48, 7:45,} 8:13, 8:15, 8:00, 8:24. Also the last 10 miles of this run constitute a PR of 1:19:58 for 10 miles. Just a hair under 8:00 avg. pace. Nice.

AM - 9.8 miles / commute crawl into work. Clear, sunny. 34 to 39 degrees. 9:31 avg. Supposed to be sunny, breezy, and 60 degrees for the commute home. PM - 9.3 miles / 8:44 avg. Usually when I run to work, then run back home in the afternoon, the run home goes really well. Not so today. It took 1.64 miles until the PF in my right ankle loosened up. It wasn't until 2.51 miles that ye ole achilles in my lower right leg settled down. My IT band on the outside of my right leg was even threatening to spaz out for a little while. I thought a mutiny was close at hand. Miles 6 and 7 went well (8:02, 8:17), but after that I was just tired out and couldn't wait to finish the run. It could be worse...I could NOT be a runner.

Salt Lake Half Marathon (13.12 Miles) 01:44:23, Place overall: 473, Place in age division: 26
1:43:49 as per Garmin. Official time: 1:44:23. My official time is slower because I stopped my watch for a POP break in mile three. Perfect weather. I jogged about a half mile before the race and another half mile after wards.Well organized race. Hope everybody gets paid on time this year. Got about 3 hours of sleep. I need to figure out what to do about my sleep issues on race days. Felt pretty strong until about mile 10, couldn't maintain pace. Good last mile though as I was eager to get finished. I felt good after the race. I think I could've/should've pushed harder. Lately I've determined in training too that I need to do more speed work, the kind that hurts, mostly to get my mind wrapped around it. So roughly a 5 (4 minutes, 19 seconds), minute PR over my time at the Ogden half last year. And about 2 minutes faster than my little breakthrough training run a couple of weeks ago (04-03-10). My buddy Lysa (on the blog) ran a really good half today and PR'd!
I'm happy with my result. I am, after all, 46 yrs old. I've only been doing this consistent running thing for less than 2 years. I'm hoping to get PR's still when I'm into my 50's.
Garminesque splits: 8:18, 8:08, 7:45, 7:24, 7:57, 7:55, 7:49, 7:56, 7:49, 8:15, 8:09, 8:34 (they just had to throw that hill on the course), 7:37. Will post official results when they become available.

AM - 10 miles. / 9:16 avg.Commute from home to work. temp in the low fifties, wind NNW ranging from 10 to 20-ish MPH. Easy pace rendered easier by the strong headwind I was running into for the majority of the run. I resisted the temptation to fight the wind and just let the pace fall where it may. My legs feel best since the half last Saturday.
PM - 10.6 miles / 8:40 avg. Commute from work to home. Mostly cloudy, temp in the low 50's. I left from work around 5:00 with a good break in the weather. My week ending today gives just over 70 miles, including the half marathon on Sat.

| | 18 miles / 8:46 avg. Started around 1:00 pm. Sun, temps low 60's. Commute run from work to home w/extensions. I felt sore and tired from the start but figured that would ultimately make for an effective workout on the legs. I ran 12 miles (mi. 3 through 14) at my goal marathon pace (GMP). My goal for the marathon is 3:45, so my pace should be around 8:34. I just figure 8:30 for easy calculation on the run. I ran a 2 mile warm up, then the tempo splits: 8:26, 8:36, 8:32, 8:17, 8:12, 8:23, 8:33, 8:30, 8:31, 8:33, 8:18, 8:15. Total time for the 12 miles, 1:41:12 / 8:26 avg. Then I death marched the final 4 miles home. I've done better than this just on random training runs, so I'm not too worried that I could barely make 18 miles today. I don't know what to think. Just have to see what race day brings...in three weeks. |

| | No run today. Driving. Camping out South. Running Monday, Tuesday. Maybe Wednesday before returning. |
| |
| | 11 miles / 11:04 avg. Sunshine, temps in the low 60's, light cooling wind.
After Saturdays long tempo run and a rest day Sunday, I wasn't sure how I'd feel for this run. The area I was camping in is surrounded by hills. I decided to run up the power line road and to the lookout that me and my friends have always mountain biked up. It seemed a little crazy to me to attempt to run it, it's a huge climb. I told myself that I should probably just run 2 or 3 miles out then turn around. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I felt really good starting out. I had no muscle soreness and my lungs felt great. I just kept going till I got to the top. What an awesome view! It looks down on the Colorado river, and Fisher towers etc. No matter how many times I go there I'm always floored by how huge this view is, and to have run up there made the moment that much sweeter. Anyway, after a couple of minutes on top I started heading back, about a mile into the return, I ran into a buddy who was making the climb on his mt. bike and I agreed to go back to the lookout with him. So that added two miles to my run. After hanging out on top for a second time, this time for a couple of minutes also, I headed back down and decided to take a shorter, steeper route down. There were a couple of sections where I could open up my stride a little but for the most part I was just trying to negotiate the rocky, steep descent without toppling over. What a great workout this was! I was out for just over two hours and felt pretty good the whole time. This was the only run I did while camping this week. I'll pick up the miles again on Thursday.

| | Playing the taper card today and not running. I'm going in to this marathon feeling much better than before TOU last Fall. Last Fall I was over-fatigued, and had a couple of little niggling pains etc. Now I feel no fatigue, and have no pains anywhere. I'm hoping the combination of having several more months of base miles under my belt, and having cut back a little on higher mileage weeks (50-60 + 1 week around 70 miles), will bring me to marathon day better prepared to go the distance without crashing. My only concern is endurance. I've run 5 long run since January (3 @ 20 and 2 @ 18), with the last one being three weeks before race day. I'm looking forward to being stronger for the next cycle of training and putting in more mileage, but for now this will have to do. Hopefully, I'll finally break the 4 hour barrier and if it's a perfect day, I can come in around 3:45-ish. |
| |
| | 6.2 miles / 50:31 / 8:09 avg. Evening run. Sun, temps in the high 50's. After work I drove up to "Emerald Park" which is at the top of a long hill; long enough to do 1/2 mile repeats on. I warmed up a little first, then did 4 trips down, then up the hill. It's not a super steep hill, but steep enough, and it increases it's steepness as you approach the top. The recent cut back in miles really feels good, I felt like I could have kept running comfortably for miles at that pace, (8:09 per mile is brisk for me). After the fourth repeat, I ran 1.5 miles barefoot on the grass. |

Ogden Marathon (26.44 Miles) 03:51:25
Garmin had me at 3:51:38 for 26.44 miles. (Official time: 3:51:25). I'm disappointed that I didn't get the 3:45 I was looking for today. But I am happy with a 14 minute PR. I continue to get faster with age! My excuse for being off pace today is that my right IT band started flaring up around mile 8, and continued to get worse as the miles went by. Frustrating because it's been almost a year since I last had any ITB issues. Maybe the cut back in miles over the last three weeks caused it? I don't know. I was hoping that it would remedy itself by the time I got to the drop off point at the top of the canyon around mile 17, then I could make up some time on the downhill. But it just got worse. Still, getting through and finishing was as big a victory for me today as a 3:45 would have been. Maybe more so. Around mile twelve I briefly considered the possibility of getting my first DNF as I just couldn't get my mind around another 13 miles with the pain. I adjusted my form/stride to try and alleviate the situation, and that seemed to help. But the new, wacky form took it's toll on other parts of my body; by the time I got out of the canyon I was cramping all over. A major highlight of the race for me was around mile 22 where Allie Scott had made signs on bright poster boards for each of the FRB'ers running Ogden today. I saw this big yellow sign that said "JD" on it. I was so out of it, I had forgotten Allie was doing this and I thought to myself "hmm, what a coincidence, I'm JD too." As I got closer I saw Allie just in time to put the pieces together and swing over to say thanks and give her a high 5. A much needed boost. Thanks Allie! My splits ranged from 8:15 to 9:00 mpm, except the last two miles, which were 10:22 and 10:00. Would I have made my goal of 3:45 today if not for the ITB issue? I don't know. I do know that my lungs and breathing felt great. I could feel that energy that I do during a good workout. Maybe if I wasn't in pain I would've gone out too hard the first 18 miles and then blown up for the remaining 8 (like I did at TOU last Fall). It doesn't matter. Race day is all about what the day brings. During those last couple of miles I swore that I would never run another marathon. Now, a few hours later, I'm trying to decide on a Fall marathon so I can torture myself again. WHY? WHY DO WE DO IT? Congratulations to all the runners out there today!
|
|
| |
| | Taking a second day off. I feel great. Did some wacky stretches throughout the day yesterday, especially for my ITB. By last night I was able to descend stairs normally again. Looking forward to seeing how I feel running tomorrow. Go team!

It rained all night. When I woke up, snow was falling. I drove to work in a snowstorm. I'm so happy I could puke.
PM: 8 miles on the treadmill. The weather had cleared up quite a bit, but it was still chilly with the wind. I had gotten myself all worked up about a TM run after work, so I stuck with the plan. I ran miles 3, 5, and 7 at HMP (7:54), mostly just to break up the run a little. 8:35 avg.

| | In spite of sleeping really well the last couple of nights, I feel wiped out. My legs/muscles feel fine, I just feel exhausted. I'm blaming it on residual post marathon fatigue. I'm really milking it for all it's worth. So, no run today. |

No run today. I have a little pain on the very outside edge of my left foot. It was hardly noticeable until last night. This morning it still feels tender so I'm going to rest a day and see how it feels tomorrow. Unless I get home from work tonight and find the urge to go on a trail run irresistible...

| | Usually I drive the 1.6 miles from my house to the access point for my fire break road run because it's a pretty steep climb, about 500 ft, with the last 300 ft being in the last .6 mile. Today I started from my house around 2:30 PM. Skies were partly cloudy and 77 degrees. The first mile in 9:33 was a good warm up considering the climb. The second mile ( including the steep .6 )was just under 11:00. I 've run this route twice before but not kept track of the pace, so I'll use this as a comparison next time I run up there. I didn't push at all on the second mile but I didn't dog the climb either. The next miles were out and back on the fire break road with several good climbs and descent in both directions. Splits for this section were 9:49, 9:37, 9:38, 9:34, 10:09, and then starting back down the canyon I went real easy down the steep part and ran the 8th mile in 9:37. The last 1.15 miles were mostly downhill on the road and I tried to salvage some of my overall pace result by running mile 9 in 8:03, and the last .15 mile at a 7:15 pace. The run was 9.15 miles / 9:38 avg. About 1,300 ft up and down over the distance. I hope to do this run several times over the Summer. Great workout.
The foot pain I mentioned yesterday is still present, but it's more comfortable to run on then to walk on.

| | I had big running plans today. I was going to do my commute runs to work and back home. This gives me anywhere from 18 to 20+ miles depending on how I'm feeling. Well, I woke up to huge East winds blowing the yard apart. We get these winds in Farmington every now and then, but today is the worse I've seen by far in the 10 years we've lived here. Trees and branches are strewn around this old town and driving through the streets is like a war zone, weaving around branches and debris while the wind howls all around. So, I hitched a ride to work with my wife with an eye to maybe at least running home later today. The wind advisory is until 4 PM. We'll see. If nothing else I can manage some treadmill miles (in the middle of June, ridiculous). Tomorrow begins the cleanup. So much for easy summertime livin'. Making plans to sell the house and moving to a more stable climate soon. |
| |
| | 12.5 miles. Ran from home about 9:00 AM. Overcast, 55 degrees. Clarke/Glovers loop. At 8.2 miles I found myself at the mystery field track. I got a drink of water then gently finished my 9th mile on the track and pushed hard for mile 10 netting a 6:52 for the mile. Same as last Sunday but with 5 more miles under my belt. Avg for the run 8:23.

| | Run home from work. Sunny, 73 degrees. 10.5 miles / 8:55 avg. Pretty much tired out today. |
|
| |
| | 10miles. 11:32 avg. Fastest mile 10:09, slowest mile 14:35. Started at the East Kaysville wilderness park, I think the Wasatch 100 starts somewhere around here, and headed North along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Ran out 5 miles and came back with a 2:17 negative split. Awesome run! Partly cloudy skies, 85 degrees, but a pretty strong South wind kept me feeling cool. I remember running this last Summer and being all excited about it then, though I ran it a bit slower last time. Garmin shows 2500 of elevation change over the course. There were a lot of climbs. I started off just ahead of 3 mountain bikers and we leap frogged most of the way out as they passed me on the flats and downhills, then I would pass them on the uphills. I was about a quarter mile ahead of them when I turned around to head back. They must have gone out about the same distance as me because after I had come back about a half mile they passed me for the last time. I saw them when I finished, they were loaded up and just pulling out of the parking lot. What a beautiful run. The BST is mostly single track and runs along the hillside parallel to the mountains on the East side of the valley, running north and south. It dips into the various canyons, where the vegetation and trees grow thicker, providing shade and technical challenge and then climbs back out providing big views of the valley and across to the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island. Lots of wildflowers in bloom right now. At one point I was acutely aware of how fortunate I am to be healthy enough to see this place as only a runner gets to see it. The highest elevation was just under 5900 feet. About 3.7 miles into the run there is a big parking lot/bathroom/water fountain. Well placed. I passed it on the way out but stopped to refill my water bottle on the way back with 3.7 miles left to run. I felt good most of the way out. Coming back I started to notice how leaden my legs were whenever I hit a hill or even flat section. At around 8.5 miles I walked for the first time up a steep section of trail. Most of the other climbs were of the "I could probably walk this faster than I'm "running" it" variety. From what I understand, it's common for ultra runners to walk the hills in a race. Still after today's paltry 10 miles, I really wonder at folks ability to run 10 times that in a 100 mile mountain race, and how I'll ever get my body to do it. |

| | 2:30 PM...98 degrees...stiff South wind...cattle road/bird refuge...10.1 miles...9:48 avg... The thermometer on the jeep read 100 degrees when I got to where I park on the cattle road to start my run. I'm calling it 98 degrees because it makes all the difference in the world. It was hot. The five miles out were into a pretty good wind. Also, the first 1.5 miles I was lugging along a half gallon jug of water to cache out by the refuge gate. Running with that bottle sucked more than I thought it would. It felt so good to drop it off. I also had my 12 oz. hand held with me. The s-caps I've been experimenting with don't seem to do a thing for me? Anybody have any experience with s-caps? Still, I like running in the heat, and the wind cooled me off a little. I was hoping to go further today, but for a number of reasons I was really dragging so I cut it short.

| | Most likely taking the day off from running. So I'll blog about my weight loss accomplishments. At the beginning of 2008 I weighed 195 pds. (I'm 6' tall). I stepped on the scale one morning and couldn't believe my eyes. I decided to start back up with some physical activity and diet change. The first 15 - 20 pds. came off relatively easy, probably mostly due to eating better/less. By Summer of that year I was running maybe three times a week, 2 - 4 miles per run (mostly on the TM still. I started running outside more in July/August. By the time I started on this blog (August '08) my weight was 175 pds. I had been lurking on the blog for awhile and decided to try running consistently. So I jumped right into running 6 days a week. It's worked out pretty well. The first year of consistent running was difficult as my body was adapting to the load. I was tired all the time. Anyway, I lost a few more pounds over the next year and by the time I ran TOU marathon in Sept. '09 I was 168 pds. I seemed to be stuck at that weight. I made some more dietary changes and slowly over the last 6 months my weight has come down to 155 pds. this past week or so. I'm thinking that 150 pds is probably as light as I want to get. It would be a good, healthy running weight. It's what I weighed when I graduated from high school. How many 46 year olds can say that? So, hopefully by next Summer I will reach the goal of 150 pounds. |

Centerville Freedom Run (3.1 Miles) 00:21:33, Place in age division: 3
Had fun this morning running in a small 5k in the town next door. I used to live in Centerville and during my warm up (2.75 mi. @ 9:24 avg), I ran by the house my wife and I lived in when we first were hitched. So, my wife, friends Lysa (on the blog), her Husband Scott, and Heidi ran also. This was Heidi's first race ever, and she ended up running most of the course (as opposed to walking it) and finished great. A really fun morning with friends and family. Got a PR by over a minute (21:33 / 6:57 avg) which yielded 3rd place in my age group. Cooled down (6.5 mi. @ 9:02 avg) by running home.
Thanks Lysa for getting us all out to do this today!

| | No running today or tomorrow. No need to push right now considering the recent dental stuff. I'm not training for anything right now so I'm just going to enjoy a 30 mile week and the first three days off in a row since I don't know when. Hope to be back at it Sunday. |
| |
| | No run today. This isn't as easy as it looks. Looking forward to the run tomorrow... |

Mountain run. First test to see if my body will allow me to do some ultras in the next year or two After a three day rest following some dental work, I figured it was a good time to try for something a little longer. 7:00 AM. Ran from my house to Francis Peak (radar towers @ 9500+ ft) and back. Temps 70 degrees to 85 F by the time I got back. Carried 70 oz's of water in a camelback, 4 Gu's and a 5 oz flask of EFS (Product out of Salt lake City), this little flask packed 400 calories and 100 g's of carbohydrates. The fueling experiment continues. I ate gu at miles 6 and 8. At mile 10 I started on the EFS and consumed that over the next 3 miles. Then gu at miles 18 and 22. I maybe could have used more calories and or/electrolytes as I started cramping up (as usual ) around mile 22. My left ITB flared up and I ended up walking much of the last 4 miles. Very frustrating because I felt really good on the climb up and most of the way back. Just to have the whole run shot down in the last 4 miles! My water supply would have been adequate if not for the additional time it took to finish with the walking. I ran out of water around mile 24. When I got back home I felt probably the most uncomfortable I have ever felt after a run. It took like 20 minutes just to feel like I could think straight again. Anyway. I'm thinking I need to carry some solid foods with me on the extended runs? Home to Francis Peak / 13.53 miles / 3:04:46 / 13:38 per mile avg. Francis Peak to home / 13.52 miles / 2:33:36 / 11:23 avg Total run 27.05 miles / 5:38:23 / 12:30 avg. 6116 ft up / 6106 ft down. Some notes: Very little traffic going up this morning, heavy traffic coming down (ATV's, motorcycles, etc). The view from the top almost knocked me off my feet. Especially looking over into Morgan county. The view goes on forever with endless hazy mountain ranges in the distance into Wyoming. Horseflies like sun. As I was coming down the canyon, I had my own personal entourage of a dozen or so flies buzzing me from all directions, for miles. Only got bit once though. Shiny, white, dome shaped radar towers have magnetic qualities which can literally pull you up a steep mountain against your better judgment.

| | No running today but looking forward to a little PT for my sore quads (ie; mowing the lawn). |
| |
| | Easy 6 on the Bluff trail (flat asphalt), before work. Sun, 69F. Right quad still had that "about to explode out of my skin with each step" feeling this morning, but everything loosened up nicely within a couple of miles. Ran the last mile in 8:09 (brisk for me). 8:48 avg.

Trail run. 10 miles on the BST, North from Kaysville. Run started at 11:12 AM under mostly sunny skies with temps from mid to upper 80's. A little warm. Got a nice little Mother Nature reminder from a rattler just as I started my run. It was huge, black and yellow striped, and loud! I saw another snake, just the garden variety kind, sunning a few miles further down the trail. I ran this course five weeks ago in 1:55:20, an 11:32 per mile average. Today I ran the same course in 1:46:27, a 10:39 average pace. Huge difference. I just felt really good today, able to take advantage of any flat sections and stretch the legs out. I saw two other runners on the trail. One woman, just up from Fernwood park. Then about a half mile from the finish I came up on an older guy. I was a little embarrassed about passing him like some young punk. I slowed and said hello as I passed and he picked up his pace and we got down to a sub 7 minute pace at the end there. I was having trouble keeping up with him. Awesome dude. 63 years old and 6 months out of heart surgery. He's just starting to build back his mileage. It made my day to run with this guy for a few minutes. Around 2,400 ft. gain/drop total.

| |
| | Staying consistent with my recent inconsistency. Low motivation month. I used to just run THROUGH these periods. But I guess the combination of the heat and no race on the horizon leave me content to just maintain for a bit until I get it back.

13 miles. 10:00 AM. Bluff trail. Lack of fitness and late morning heat (82-87F) made for a slow run.
I went to the doctor yesterday for routine checkup. Here's some stats: BMI 21.4 (within "normal range for a 46 yr. old man, also puts me in the 8th percentile for weight), BP was 114/66, my pulse came out at 60 bpm (though, I haven't seen a doctor in decades and MAY have been a little nervous). All in all, I'm one of the rare "fit" people this doctor gets to see these days. Running is such a healthy habit!

6:29 AM. Partly cloudy, a couple of short light rain moments, 70 degrees. From home, Clark / Glovers lane loop.
After a first mile warm up (9:14) I ran 3 miles @ MP (8:38, 8:26, 8:22), mile 5 was rest (9:31). Then did 10 x 2 minutes (7:15 - 8:00 pace) with one minute easy (8:27, 8:38, 8:32). Pace on mile 9 and 10 was 8:57, 8:26. 10 miles / 8:43 avg.

| |
| | Well, I finally managed 6 days in a row (instead of the 4 or 5 I've been running for the last couple of months). Off today, long tomorrow. |
| |
| |
5:33 AM. 17.6 miles. Clear with temps in the low to mid 70's. From the house Clark/Glovers lane x 2. Slow going but I'm okay with an average pace of 9:02 for the run considering the first mile was 10:11. Negative split for the run also. Another nice thing about running from my house is the routes I use aren't totally flat. Today's run netted over 1,800 ft of elevation gain/drop. So it feels like a good balanced workout for the legs even when I'm moving slow.
Slacker July has come to an end. However, even though I took ten days off I still managed to get over 200 miles for the month. Hopefully I can maintain some consistency in August. This coming week I have another dental procedure on Wednesday so I'll have to take at least two, and maybe three days off in a row.

| | No run today. Practicing the art of Zen and Lawnmower Maintenance. |
| |
| | 9:40 AM. Sunny, 80+ degrees. One mile boardwalk loops at the bird refuge. I had set out to do an 8 - 10 mile progression run but due to several factors, including lack of sleep, heat, bad genes, poor fitness, and suspect diet I had to give up the effort after 6 miles. The last two miles I just focused on form. 8 miles / 8:37 avg. Splits: 8:51, 8:34, 8:31, 8:22, 8:25, 8:09, 9:14, 8:49

| | 25.3 miles. 5:32 AM. It was warm this morning. The thermometer in the car showed 80 degrees when I got to the parking lot, and it was about 91 degrees when i got back. There were points on the run that were certainly cooler because of the elevation (9,400 ft), and it was windy most of the time. When I started out it was dark and there was thunder, lightening, and a little rain as a fast moving storm blew through. Great way to start a long run in the mountains. Left from the Kaysville Wilderness park, near the start of the Wasatch 100. Ran about the first 12.5 miles of the course and came back. I had intended to get to Francis peak (14.6 miles) but I was feeling nauseous from the start, and was getting dizzy. I was going to turn around after 8 miles but just kept going. Started feeling a lot better after 10 miles. But by the time I reached 12.5 miles I had been out for 3:45 and decided it just wasn't my day. Fortunately on the way back I ran into a couple of other runners. It was a big help having someone to run with and I'm sure I came back a lot faster because of them. Much of the trail was single track, and overgrown, had to watch for roots/rocks. The steepest part of the trail, from mile 4.7 to mile 8 or 9, is really rocky and technical. Coming down that section really beat my feet up. In the overgrowth, my shoelaces kept getting untied by hidden branches. Around mile-ish 11 there is a steep climb up and over a cirque (?), kind of a four limbed scramble, harder to descend than to climb through this section. Although I didn't feel well, and moved extremely slow going up, I'm really happy to have gotten this run in. I'm hoping to eventually run all sections of this course, and today was a mental victory for me. I was out for about 7 hours. My left ITB started to twang a bit the last few miles, but held up great considering the elevation gain/drop (I'm still trying to figure that out). Though I was pretty tired toward the end, I didn't bonk! Hope I burned some calories. |
|
| |
| | Easily the most sore I have felt the day after a long run. Quads and calves are shot. Love that feeling! |
| |
| | The only problem with these long mountain runs (Saturday), is they take me out for so many days. My garmin stopped recording elevation data after mile 18 for some reason. By then I had climbed over 7,200 feet. Miles 18 through 25 were mostly downhill though, just a couple of short climbs, so I'm estimating about 8,000 feet of ascent/descent on the run. More than that though, I think it was the technical nature of the course that got to me, and the 7 hours of "running". All in good fun, can't wait for September's long mountain run!
Hopefully I can run tomorrow.

| | 12 miles / 8:32 avg. Overcast, low 60's, light to heavy rain. Awesome running weather. Ran from work, nice break from the heat today. Don't know if it was just the cooler temps or additional factors, but today was the best I've felt in weeks. Splits: 8:59, 8:34, 8:34, 8:43, 8:48, 9:03 (up big hill), 8:13 (down big hill), 8:06, 8:34, 8:11, 8:16, 8:17. I think my splits are faster toward the end of the run because it was raining really heavily and I wanted to get back.

8 miles / 8:42 avg. Early lunch run from work. Sunny, upper 60's. The first three miles felt awful. I felt light headed and weak. I decided to try some 1 minute intervals and see if that would fix things. Since this wasn't a workout, I took 2 minutes in between the 1 minute surges (<7 min. pace). After 8 intervals I was feeling better and ran mile 7 at 7:46. Then did two more one minute surges and cooled down for a total of 8 miles. So, although this was an easy paced run overall, it was a good mental exercise. Splits: 9:16, 9:05, 9:15, 8:32, 8:19, 8:46, 7:46, 8:40.

10 miles on the fire break road. This was the perfect summer evening run. I got started a little after 7:00 PM. Temps in the mid to upper 80's, but once the sun went down and the breeze kicked in it felt perfect. Beautiful sunset as viewed from the foothills on the East side of the valley with the sun dipping behind Antelope Island to the West. One of those runs where I felt no pain and had plenty of energy. It got dark towards the end which was kind of cool.

7.25 miles / 8:27 avg. TM. That's right....treadmill. I took my running things to work and changed into them after work intending to stop at the LPT on the way home for some easy miles. The wind had been blowing pretty hard all day from the South. So I figured I could go South out then come back with a nice little tailwind. But when I got to the parking lot and got out of my car the wind was just too much for my feeble mind to deal with, plus it was pretty warm. So I got on the treadmill at home. First TM run in 3 months or something. I can't run on the treadmill without doing a little workout so I did a 2 mile warmup, then 10 x 1/4 mile with 1/4 mile rest in between. My pace on the quarters went thus: 8:00, 7:48, 7:42, 7:36, 7:30, 7:30, 7:42, 7:09, 7:30, 7:04. then 1.25 mile cool down. I haven't done anything even resembling speedwork lately so I kept today's intervals easy, mostly just staving off boredom.
Running on the TM in my house had me sweating like it was Summer time. Oh wait...

| | 15.4 miles / 8:56 avg. Extended lunch run, from work. Sunny, temps low to mid 70's. Anytime I run from work means I'm running some hills. Today was about 1,650 ft. up/down, which is great for fitness, not great for pace. Really glad to get this run in before the month ends so as to get my minimum 200 miles for the month. Water stops at miles 7, 9, and 12. Gu at 10 mile. |

7 miles / 57:54 / 8:16 avg. 9:45 AM, Sun, temps in the high 60's. From work. After a warm up mile (9:16), I determined I was feeling good and thought maybe doing some intervals, but it felt good to just keep a steady pace. So I tried to avoid hills and keep a good pace going for the remainder of the run. Splits for mile 2-7: 8:30, 7:47, 7:54, 8:05, 8:09, 8:11. By the way. You've heard of restless leg syndrome. Well, I've got restless upper body syndrome. Has anyone ever experienced this. It like an unquenchable tingling/tickling sensation in my shoulder and upper back. It's extremely uncomfortable. It started 4 or 5 days ago and seems to be increasing in frequency/intensity. Someone recommended more iron in my diet. Any one have any thoughts or suggestions?

25.1 miles / 9:56 avg. Started from home and ran all over the place. 9:45 AM, sunny and 50F, by the time I got done it was 66 degrees. Great running weather. Stuck to the roads but still ended up with about 2400 ft vert. for the run. Ran the first 15 miles with just my 16 oz. hand held bottle. My first stop at mile 15 was at a little nature preserve where I had a half gallon of water cached. There's a 1.2 mile trail there, pea gravel, wooden step bridges etc. I did a couple of laps on that, topped off my hand held and finished the rest of the half gallon, and continued on. I hit a really low point around mile 21 and I thought, "well, that's it; I'll be bonking my way through the last 4 miles". I walked a total of .4 miles in mile 22, and then rallied. My fastest miles of the run were the last two! I can't tell you how happy that makes me. Usually once the crap starts hitting the fan I'm finished. So hopefully this means that I'm starting to get some of the fueling strategy down for the longer runs.
My total mileage for the week that ends today is 69.5. WET: 69.5 #7

4.2 miles. From work, 10:30 AM. Sun 68F. Just out assessing the immediate effect from yesterday's long run. No soreness, which makes sense because though I ran pretty far yesterday, I ran at a very easy pace. I am fatigued though, very much so. Interesting challenge on today's run as I felt as though I would drop off to sleep at any moment. I don't feel tired, it feels like an exhaustion welling up into my head, threatening to knock me out on a whim.

Today felt really good and fluid, especially after the first couple of miles. | | 19 miles. Great day of running. I ran on some of the TOU course pacing Lysa for her first marathon. She totally rocked it. I got to say that I find plenty of inspiration here on FRB, but being with Lysa today for the final 10 miles of her marathon was perhaps the most inspiring running experience I've had to date. Being with her recalled memories from my first marathon and so I knew what she was going through. She was so tough and endured and finished in style! Congratulations Lysa! Your fitness/training really payed off in that rather than fading and crumbling towards the end you just kept moving. According to my garmin, the final two miles were the fastest of the last ten miles you covered. Impressive. Thanks for allowing me to share it with you. So I left my house this morning around 7 and headed North on I-15. Somehow I had missed the Brigham city exit which would have taken me through Sardine canyon and on to Logan. When I realized my mistake I was just coming up on an exit for riverside and Logan. I didn't know where I was but was so happy to see the word Logan on a sign. I took the exit and was relieved to see that it was only 18 miles to Logan from there. On the way, I saw a sign that said Wellsville. So I took that road because I wanted end up on the South end of Logan so as to avoid traffic and crowds. It was a good choice as I drove through some beautiful rural small towns while the sun was rising and with a live Greg Brown CD playing. Perfect. Anyway, I got back on I-89 and turned onto the street that I knew would lead me to the Walmart where I would park my car. This placed me about a half mile from the 21 mile marker (Springcreek) on the course, and provided a quick escape at the end of the day when I got back to my car to head home. So, I strapped on my camelback and headed out. I had just missed the leaders by about 15 - 20 minutes I'm guessing but I did see Sasha come through mile 21 as I headed up the course going the opposite way. My goal was to find Lysa around mile 17 just as the runners turn onto hwy 165 heading North. I've never run a race course in the opposite direction during the race and it was a cool perspective. At first I encountered lone elite runners as they approached the final 5 miles of their marathon. I saw Allie Scott and knew she was the first woman in the race. She looked very smooth and strong. I gave her a shout out "Allie Scott...it's JD! Go! Allie go!" As I ran the opposite direction of the runners I was very careful to stay well out of their way, often running on the sidewalk and dodging spectators rather than taking up course space. Eventually the runners starting coming toward me in larger and larger groups until it was a steady stream of runners. I stopped at aid station 17 and chatted with some volunteers for about 5 minutes. Realizing I was a little early, I continued up the course to find Lysa. Leaving the aid station is where Stacie (on the blog) shouted out my name as she was running by. I never would have recognized her, but I recognize her amazing ability to pick a face of someone she'd never met before out of a crowd of people. Found Lysa around mile 16-ish? She was with her sister in law and had stopped to stretch. So far I was having a great morning, perfect weather, beautiful Cache valley, and running! And still, my day just got better and better. Lysa's brother Cameron joined us shortly after this and stuck with us, running all the way to the finish. What a tough guy, it must run in the family! I haven't really spent any time with Cam in years so it was nice "hanging out" with him today. Lysa'a family: her husband, children, parents would pop up throughout the course and it was a great way to spend a run having all this loving supportive family around. Lysa is truly blessed. So the miles passed, Lysa stayed strong in spite of not having the kind of day we all wish we could have on race day, but which rarely happens, and in spite of her calves seizing up on her with 7 or 8 miles still to go. I broke off from her about 100 yards before the finish and headed for the park. I was thrilled to hear the announcer say her name over the PA as she crossed the finish line! After wards we all just hung out for awhile and soaking in the experience. I finally met Kelli (on the blog). I have really looked up to Kelli over the last couple of years reading about her tenacious and amazing training and watching her knock down PR after PR as time goes by. She's a real class act and a great example. We stayed to see Allie get her Award and thought it was funny that they just hand the winners a big wad of cash right there on the spot. I guess that's preferable to waiting for a check in the mail! I congratulated Allie on her incredible performance, and then ran back to my car. I took the short route and ended up with 19 miles for the day. With all the crud that goes on in the world, I can't help but feel extreme gratitude for my life experience and the place running has in my life. If anyone ever catches me complaining, about anything, be sure and kick my butt and send me on down the river! WET 60.9 miles #19

| | 12.5 miles. I made the uphill climb from my front door to and into Farmington canyon then turned south onto the fire break road. I usually drive the 1.6 miles and park my car for this run but I was feeling saucy tonight. I got started at 5:22 PM. Perfect timing as the sun was dipping below the horizon on my trip back, still in the foothills with 3 miles to go. The mountains on the east side were on fire with the fall colors starting to pop. Met another runner about 3 miles into my run and ran a couple of slower miles with him. It's such a rare event to see another runner around there that I had to chat with him for a bit. Turns out he lives just a couple of blocks from me! Generally felt good on this run. The legs do feel a little beat down but I was happy to be able to still manage the climbs I encounter on this course with something at least slightly above a shuffle. I ran for 2:15:24 netting an average pace of 10:49 per mile, and over 2500 ft up/2500 ft down. WET 60.5 #26

| | Well, I'm all 'stered for the Ogden marathon in May. |
| |
| |
30 miles / 5:17:50 / 10:35 avg. Left from my house just before 6:00 AM. Clear skies and 58 degrees. It was sunny by the time I finished and 78 degrees. Good LSD (long slow distance). I ran conservatively to insure I could cover the distance. I crossed the marathon in 4:37:12. About half the miles were on dirt road as I stuck to the west side of town and ran on the cattle road and on the trail in the bird refuge. I guess bird hunting started today as right around 7:30 AM hundreds of shotgun reports echoed throughout the wetlands to the south of where I was running.. I wonder who drew their weapons first, the "men" or the birds. Before the run I ate half a banana and a slice of whole wheat bread. Also had a couple cups of coffee and some water. I had my hand held water bottle and a half gallon cached on the cattle rd. I got to the cache about 12 miles into the run. I refilled my bottle and continued out 3 miles then back and refilled my hand held again and finished off what was left in the half gallon bottle. At mile 25 I was able to refill my hand held at the mystery field track and that was plenty for the final 5 miles. I ate the first gu about an hour and a half into the run, then ate one every 45 minutes to an hour. I took in 600 calories total. S-caps every 45 minutes to an hour. I wish there were a way to have a clone run with me without ingesting gu's or s-caps just so I could see what difference, if any, they made. I didn't cramp up at all. I would say I bonked mildly the last 4 or 5 miles, but it wasn't very severe. I was able to keep moving. So, I don't know.
I mostly wanted to get this run in for the psychological boost of covering 30 miles, I didn't think about pace at all. Actually, I would say this is the strongest I have felt mentally during a long run. I think experience plays a big role. I knew what to expect and didn't freak out when I started feeling like I was tanking. I know these lulls come AND go during extended runs. Also, I've learned to be patient with the discomfort; it's there, it will persist, just run. With three weeks until the Goblin Valley 50k, this is my last long run. Though if I feel okay next Saturday or Sunday I may do 18-20 easy miles. I played little mind games to help get through the run. When I got to 5 miles I thought "I've covered 1/6th of the distance". When I got to 6 miles I considered "gee, I've covered 1/5th of the distance already". At 7.5 miles I assured myself that I had already run 1/4 of the distance and I only had to repeat what I'd just done 3 more times. Piece of cake. At 15 miles, well, yeah, halfway there! Then it was a matter of how much was left. Just beyond the 16th mile I was happy to report to me that I had less than 14 miles to go. I did this for every mile. At 22 miles I felt like I could see the light at the end of the tunnel as I had less than 8 miles. No problem. I run "easy 8's" all the time. But once I finished up mile 28, the last two miles I had yet to cover loomed quite large in my mind. I got through them. It was warm by the time I finished, I'm glad I didn't start any later this morning. No issues whatsoever with the finicky left foot. I sure like runnin'.

| | I'm rolling out of town in a few minutes. I may run a couple of miles either today or tomorrow once I get to my camp site. Then the 50k on Saturday. Looks like cool temps and maybe some rain! Perfect! I'll blog y'all on Sunday eve. |

Goblin Valley 50k (47.96k) (29.8 Miles) 05:08:33
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" If indeed Emerson's words apply to my running habit, then my mind is microscopic. I'm just going to keep running, even though it gets me nowhere, I'm not fast, I won't win or place, it hurts, and it's time consuming...foolish? So be it. 29.8 miles / 5:08:33 / 10:21 avg.
I drove to the Temple Mountain area on Thursday and set up camp, about a 20 minute drive from the starting line at Goblin Valley State Park. The weather was pretty nice all day. I crawled into my tent around 8:00 PM to read a little and hopefully get to sleep early. I was still awake around 9:00 PM when it started raining. Then it rained, steadily, all night. Literally. It just never stopped. Finally around 8:00 AM on Friday there was a break in the rain. Just enough time to get some coffee and pancakes made, and then it started raining again. By 11:00 AM, I was quite bored with sitting in my tent, reading, listening to the rain. So I decided to drive into Green River to fill up with gas and take a drive up the Green River road. It's about a 90 mile round trip. I was thinking that I could find something to do until 6:00 when the race dinner/packet pick up started. Well, after a couple of hours hanging around town I was quite bored and decided I would pick up my bib etc in the morning before the race, so I drove back to camp. It had been raining off and on all day. On the way back I drove over to the dirt road where the first part of the race is run, it was extremely muddy. I drove up the road a couple of miles looking for a dry stretch to take a short run on but none was to be found. The mud was thick. I had thick mud caked all over my jeep. Embarrassing for me because it made me look like one of those guys that likes to go "mudding" just so I could drive around with mud all over my vehicle, which is unlike me. Plus, I wasn't willing to make the drive back to Green River just to wash my car. So I was stuck with embarrassingly thick mud caked all over my car for the rest of the weekend. I can't tell you how much this bugged me. Anyway, I got back to camp, the sky was clearing up a little. Earlier in the day I had considered just packing up and going back home, skipping the race the next morning, because the conditions were so bad. But with the weather clearing I decided to wait until morning to make my final decision. Being Friday night, other campers started showing up in droves. I assume some of them were there for the race. I got to bed around 8:00 PM for a couple of hours of reading. I had my alarm set for 5:15 AM. The canyon got quite loud during the evening with the sounds of cars frantically driving up and down the road looking for a camp spot before the light dwindled into dark. With the steep canyon walls, every sound echoed; every door shut, stake drive, voices. Lots of teenagers in one group, and what teenager can resist the sound of their own voice echoing off the canyon walls? The noise became almost musical in a way, as all the echoes blended together. Surprisingly, everybody pretty much settled down around 10:30 or so. I slept pretty well, but woke up around 4:00 AM and got out of my tent for a bathroom break. The moon was full or close to it and it was like daylight outside. I couldn't get back to sleep because I was worried about sleeping through the alarm. No problem, I felt rested and it was a really nice morning with the moon and all. I like not being rushed in the mornings. So I made coffee, ate breakfast, changed into my running gear and covered up because it was pretty chilly out. I got to the park around 6:45 AM, got my packet, organized my drop bag and then hung out at the starting line chatting with other lunatics who think running 31 miles is a good time. Saw Kelli (I wish I knew how to provide links to other blogger's blogs), met for the first time Smooth and Leslie Petersen. I really love how this blog has introduced me to other runners who I otherwise would not know. It's nice to make a few connections at the races and have a little "virtual" history with the bloggers. Before the race started we were informed that the turn around for the 50k had been pulled back a couple of "k's" due to the mud on top of the pass where the original turn around was. If we were OCD we could run the "gauntlet" a couple of times at the end of the race to make up the distance if needed. Whatever. A runner like me (uncompetitive, slow) isn't too concerned with this. I was just looking forward to a good long run in beautiful surroundings. The race started. I ran with Kelli for about a mile before she pulled off ahead to do what she does so well come race day, excel! In the second mile I stopped at a campground bathroom facility we were passing to take care of some last minute business. ( a two star morning for those keeping count). I felt good. No tightness or fatigue in the legs. I wasn't feeling that extra little umph that tells me I'm going to have an exceptional day. But that only happens on training runs. Never on race day, yet. The mud wasn't bad at all as it had stopped raining almost 12 hours ago. In fact, the rains had made the course completely dust free for the day, which I think was a plus. I met and had extended conversations with several runner along the course and thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of the run. The aid stations were great. I ate cookies, potato wedges, bananas and a little Heed. At the turn around I got my bag and dropped my gloves and hat, grabbed a couple of gu's, then tied my bag back up. When I went to grab my water bottle that I had set on the tail gate of the truck, it was gone. I looked all over for it. It was a really weird moment. I wanted to hurry and get back to running but my water bottle had simply disappeared. It kind of threw me into a state of mild vertigo for a moment. I determined that someone must have accidentally grabbed it (it was an "Ultimate Directions" bottle with a black strap, I had seen a lot of them on the course today), and decided to just get going, without it. I wasn't too concerned about hydration because there were plenty of aid stations. I had to take a little more time at each station as I filled up with as much water as I could before moving on. The weather by the way was ideal. Partly cloudy and I don't think the temps got above 60 degrees. Couldn't have ordered better weather for this run. I was really starting to slow down around the 20 mile mark. My legs were crampy and I just couldn't keep up form or pace. Luckily I had someone to run with those last few miles. I didn't get his name but we had some good conversation which helped take my mind off the complete failure of my body. Still, I was holding up okay, and moving forward. During the very last mile, known as "The Gauntlet" which is was kind of nice because the surface was softer and the path was marked with little plastic pumpkins. Just something kind of goofy and a nice distraction to get through the end of the race. Anyway, with about a quarter mile to go my body just sort of shut completely down. I was getting tightness/pain in the chest and a wave of nausea hit me, and didn't go away. I stumbled to the finish and took a few minutes with my hands on my knees trying to get a grip. Anytime I stood up straight I felt extremely dizzy. I've never experienced anything quite this severe during a run before. I have no idea what happened. I quickly recovered though and was fine. I hung out for about an hour and ate, talked with Kelli, who of course completely rocked the day! Saw Smooth and said hi. I left before Leslie Petersen got in. I was in a hurry to get back to camp and pack up for home. I could see the clouds starting to gather again and decided to head home Saturday night instead of Sunday. I couldn't take any more rain. On the drive home, I encountered one of the most severe hail, rain, lightening, thunder storms in my life. I was white knuckles on the two lane highway 6, as the sound of the hail and thunder was deafening. Semi's passing going the opposite direction were shrouded in billows of rain as they approached and passed, making visibility even more limited. It was crazy. I actually started hydroplaning. At first I thought the car was being thrown around by crazy wind, but then the "traction" warning light came on the dashboard and I realized I was basically floating down the highway on a plane of water. Spooky. About a mile down the road the traffic had come to a complete standstill. An accident up ahead. It was about a half hour before they started allowing small groups of cars through at a time. As I finally made my way slowly past the accident I saw a little red sedan that had been completely shredded by a collision with a semi going the opposite direction. Also there was a body on a gurney covered in a white sheet. The combination of driving through that storm, and then seeing the result of that accident had me kind of emotional when I called my wife to tell her about it. I usually have a more clinical perspective when it comes to things like that, but this was just a little too close for me. I looked on ksl.com and found out that that both people in the sedan had been killed. They had apparently drifted head on into the path of the semi. Hydroplaning no doubt. So anyway, those few who read this blog may or may not know that one of my favorite things about going away is to come back home. Love it here. And feel grateful for my wife and the comforts of home. Not to be taken for granted. After sleeping on it, I'm really not that disappointed in my pace for the run (10:21 per mile). Roughly 3,000 feet of vert certainly slowed me down a bit, and the terrain. All in all, I had a great day. I'm looking forward to trying this one again, and hopefully something longer in the not too distant future. Post script: the 101's were totally great for this run.

| | No run today. Late last night I noticed a pain just below my right knee, like at the very top of my shin bone. It feels just like a bruise. It didn't show up during my run yesterday, so I'm hoping I just whacked my leg against a table or something. It still hurts today though, so I'm just not going to chance it. I've achieved my 200 mile monthly minimum anyway. In fact I ran a total of 205.8 miles for Oct. I only ran twenty days this month so my average per run comes to 10.29 miles. My plan for November is to just run without any pressure, hopefully staying in the 50 mile per week range. I may do a 5k for Thanksgiving. I want to really jump up the mileage in Dec, Jan, and most of February. I should easily reach my goal of 2500 miles for 2010. Happy Halloween!

| | Leaning towards no running today. We'll see. Yeah the weather's nasty; 30+ mph winds, freezing temps etc. I'm hoping for the lull that usually comes right before a snowfall but the weather folks are saying "blizzard", so I don't think there will be a break. If I feel up to it I may go for 3 or 4 miles on the treadmill tonight. Just to clarify my blog headline "The Treadmill Avoidance Project (TAP)". My intention is to make any TM running I do this winter the exception rather than the rule as in previous winters. The last two winters (Nov. through March), I've averaged around 35 treadmill runs. So this winter I'm allowing myself 12 TM runs, 1/3rd of what I usually do. I have nothing against the treadmill really. I enjoy running on the TM at times, because I inevitably end up doing speedwork to stave off the boredom, so it's always rewarding. But last winter I found myself choosing the TM over outdoors several times when the weather was only slightly inclement, and I feel the need to toughen up a bit. There are a lot of runners that run outside, everyday, no matter what, no excuses. I know myself well enough to know that's not possible for me, but I can certainly try harder. Hopefully by allowing myself a few TM runs, I will end up running on those days when I use it, rather than no running at all. I hope you enjoyed this long winded, tedious explanation of TAP.

On today's run I thought about how delusional it probably is of me to think I could run a 100 miler like the Wasatch 100. I'm thinking I'll give it another year and focus on completing another 50k, and perhaps try a 50 miler and 100k in 2011. If training goes really well this summer, I might consider running the Pony Express 100 miler in the fall. A relatively flat course. But yeah, I need more miles behind me, more strength, and more experience before tackling the mountain 100 milers. Fortunately I live in a place where I can run from my door and onto the Wasatch 100 course most of the year. I hope to take advantage of this often. MT101 performance review: GRIPPY. WT 60.5 miles

11 miles / 8:44 avg. Bluff trail. 15F, North wind, faux sun. Easy pace, good negative split. Low level cold that I've been under for the last three days is all but gone (thanks Airborne?).
WT 47.4 miles Happy New Year! Year in Summary - 2010 2009's totals in parenthesis 86 days with no running (57) Total miles = 2,578.74 (2,654.15) # of runs = 290 (331) # of days run 279 (308) # of doubles 11 (23) Avg. miles per run 8.89 (8.02) Avg. miles per day run 9.24 (8.62) # of TM runs 22 (32) # of TM miles 139.95 (194.05) Avg. miles per TM run 6.36 (6.06) Biggest month 247.05, March (260.95, April) Most miles in one week period - Non blogular: 70.2 4/16 - 4/22 and 12/11 - 12/17 (81.2, August) All within the Sun - Sat blog week format: 31 (17) weeks less than 50 miles 12 (21) weeks between 50 - 60 miles 9 (10) weeks between 60 - 70 miles One 50k (October) One marathon (PR - May) One half marathon (PR - April) One 5k (PR - July) This year went great for me. I set my mileage goal at 2,500, which was less than what I had run in 2009, because I felt so wiped out in 2009 (my first full year of consistent running). I ended up running only 75 miles less this year than last, but I never felt the overwhelming fatigue that I did in 2009. This tells me that I'm stronger, my mileage base is good, not too many miles, but enough to improve on as evidenced by my PR's this year. Also, 2010's miles were spread out more evenly. I feel confident that I can run 3,000 miles in 2011 without hurting myself, though I expect it to be challenging in terms of time commitment and keeping a higher mileage week. I'm look forward to enjoying some more over-long training runs in 2011 as I continue the delusion that I'll be able to run a 100 miler someday.
