2 miles on the treadmill - it's been 3 weeks since my last "run" - my wife and i spent two of those weeks in Italy, which was nice but i was wishing i had been fit enough to squeeze a run in. i didn't even pack any running gear - but i'm feeling motivated now and hopefully will keep on keepin' on. today i walked 1 mile, jogged 2 miles (9:15 avg), then walked another half mile. the retro, guitar driven, led zeppelinesque sounds of Greta Van Fleet kept me company

it's been 6 weeks since my last outdoor run and during those six weeks i ran 3 times...pathetic. it was so nice to run outside today. my skin has turned a whiter shade of pale this winter! eyes forward.

3 miles - i spent 47:30 on the treadmill and covered 4 miles in that time because i was taking 1 to 2 minute walk breaks every few minutes, so i'm just logging 3 miles. workout felt good but mentally i just couldn't hack it, thus the walk breaks. i wanted to go at least 45 minutes because somewhere a long time ago i read that you needed to keep the heart rate up for at least 45 minutes to gain any cardiovascular benefit? or maybe it was to get an endorphin fix. anyway, this is the current state of my fitness. it is what it is. live to run another day.

lol! i have fallen so far off the wagon that i need to build back up to being able to run at least 3 miles comfortably before venturing outside again - easy choice in the winter but i'm looking forward to running outdoors soon!

3 miles - pretty much the same workout as tuesday - 47 minutes on the treadmill with 3 miles run and one mile walked, but in a slightly more organized fashion: i walked a half mile than ran a half mile, walked a quarter, ran a half, walked a quarter then ran two miles. i finished four miles just under 45 minutes so i walked for a couple of more to get to 47 minutes.

quite a little quagmire of UN-fitness i've gotten myself into!

10 miles - owens / easy st. to gordon, east to fort lane, north to hwy 193 and back to antelope, then east to fairfield, south to familiar territory again. today i ran on several roads i've never run on before in spite of running around these parts for 18 years. it was refreshing. i promised myself at least six miles but again felt good and kept going. around 7.5 miles i started bonking. mile 9 was a 10:16, i was cooked. todays run was the hardest so far in this current buildup, which makes me very happy because i know running with discomfort will make me stronger in the long run.

52 miles for the week ending today! this is the first time i have run at least 50 miles in a one week period since april 2015 - over 4 years ago. so pleased with todays run. this is exactly what i have been working towards for the last three months.

16 miles on the buffalo ranch trail - i haven't been out here in about 4 years i think. it's a 3.7 ish mile loop thats relatively flat and has a nice pea gravel surface. temps in the mid to upper 70's but it was mostly cloudy and breezy which took the edge off the warmth. i was hoping for maybe a couple of more miles today but nothing ever really came together and i stopped at sixteen. again, had plenty of energy, no pains or niggles, just sort of flat...was hoping things would sync up but it never happened and as a result i was moving pretty slow - still, happy to get it done. - 9:56 avg

i met all my micro goals for the month of june by running at least 200 miles (212), getting a 50 mile week (i hit a high of 55 somewhere in there), and a "long" run of 15 miles (16). so things are moving along according to plan, i'm healthy, no injuries, just a little tired. anitcipating some sort of "breakthrough" along the way where a faster pace feels effortless and a 20 miler feels easy - or maybe that's too much to ask at 55 years old...time will tell

i found the 2 minute repeats were easier because it was long enough i could relax and work on form etc. with the 1 minute reps i feel like i'm always watching the clock. mentally the hardest part of this run was the warmup and the cooldown. physically everything felt good.

well, back to my original plan to run another marathon only for a pr attempt - not happening this year. luckily i can drop down to the half at huntsville in september. my hope is to keep a solid 40-50 mile per week base throughout this winter and see about a fall marathon for 2020
my body just isn’t cooperating - i may have done too much too soon. no injuries or anything just real slow to adapt to higher mileage.      

i realize i could “finish” a marathon this september, but it would be a death march at the end and i’m just not interested in doing that.

Right now is a time in the training when we feel over worked and under appreciated! But in the next few remaining weeks we catch up with our almost unbearable training demands and mega mileage weeks. Are you even considering waiting a few more weeks to see if your adjusts to your training and you regain your strength and speed before we go into taper time????

thanks Tom. yeah i'll keep the faith until the deadline to downsize but knowing my body the way i do it feels like a no go. it could just be a short term phase, we'll see. as of now i struggle with six mile runs, quite demoralizing but yeah, i could bounce back. stranger things have happened!

JD - Between the extra miles, elevated speed training and the trips to the gym I’m dragging my butt down the road . Yesterday’s 19.5 miler in the heat was horrible, even though I got out at about 4:am when it was only 72* 😅. I’ve got a 10k race on Wednesday so I ‘m resting Monday & Tuesday with the hopes that I will regain some spring in my tired, short, fat, old man body and win in my age 🥇division.

thanks Tom! - i've obviously taken the marathon training off my plate for now and am looking forward to a year of base building. registering for the Full Monte did pull me out of my non-running stupor though and kicked my butt back in the right direction. and who knows, i may go ahead and run the huntsville half for fun in september.

first run in the very minimalist, very flat vapor 4's. hearkening back to the Hattori days. i ran many thousands of miles injury free in the Hattori shoe and i'm going to try to get back to that over the next couple of years. for now i'll run a few miles a week in the vapor 4's plus a little barefoot running now and then. really helps improve form and foot strength.

The half it shall be! As I’ve watched your training and progression of miles it appears to me that you have the training and ability right now to get out and do the Half Monte in style. Just get thru the last 28 days with some good solid training and you’ve got it made. You don’t even need a three week taper. Most experienced runners don’t even think you need more than a week of taper if any to get out and clober a half Mary. The physical portion of the training is all but over with the mental hurdle as the last challenge to jump !

Sweating is good. You don’t have to do much of a taper to do a half but you still need to be careful and not injure yourself on the way to the race. Keep up the great training....and we will see you soon!
