"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka
"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

| | easy 8 / campus loops. significant run 9 days after the little achilles snafu - felt really good and considered running a couple more but there was a little weakness creeping up in the injury zone, i'm really pleased that things are on the right track so quickly. i'm grateful for the wisdom and experience shared on fast running blog which provides an excellent road map for all things running related.

| | 4 really slow miles from work / easy street. so i get the achilles strain that popped up a couple of weeks ago under control and now, yesterday, my left hamstring developed a sharp pain. funny stuff. anyway, i took it real slow today and it felt pretty good. that's two niggles in places i've not had pain before in two weeks...i'm falling apart! i've never been fast but i've always been strong. i've always been able to count on my legs getting me through whatever mileage i set my mind to. i hope this isn't signaling the end of an era for me. my mileage has been low the past few months and i haven't done any speedwork so i don't know what's going on.

splits for 5k as per garmin: 7:53, 7:54 (a lot of climbing these first couple of miles), 7:19 (some climbing, mostly falling down hill), 1:01 for the last .16 mile (6:26 pace).
overall 83/636

10k was 49:36 (8:04, 7:30, 7:46, 7:56, 8:39, 8:38 + 1:01 for final .17 / 7:59 avg. i think i may be permanently scarred by the hill in mile 5 and 6. brutal, but fun. steadily passed runners throughout most of the race, felt strong had a good kick at the finish. so far this series is serving my long term goal very well. it's kind of a relief with these courses being so tough as i have no desire to "race", just to push myself hard and enjoy the pain.
i placed 84/576 overall, and 6th out of 29 old dudes (50-54) i wonder if the same 80+ runners beat me today as in the 5k?

| | 22 miles / 8:58 avg. long run this morning. drove over to the relatively flat buffalo ranches trail in farmington and ran 6 loops (3.65ish miles each) plus a little out and back at the end to get 22. ideal weather with the temps around 45F at the start and 52F at the end of the run. this long run went as well as i could have hoped for. felt strong and energetic throughout the whole morning. the legs started breaking down around mile 18 but i knew i'd be fine extending the run because everything else was feeling good. just water and coffee before the run. my first water stop was after the third loop, about mile 11. a swig of water and a bite of banana. then i stopped for water and banana at the end of the next two loops. i also made two stops during the run to move some product. my fastest mile was my last @ 8:19. really good run in the "training for a marathon" scheme of things.

| | 10 miles / trail run! it's been a couple of years since i last did a real trail run, not counting last summers anomolous 15 miler at the Leadville Heavy Half. i ran on the shoreline trail north out of the kaysville wilderness park; the first 5 miles of the wasatch course and back. things have changed for the area since i was last there. super crowded parking lot, on a sunday even. used to be hardly anyone around especially on sundays. there is a bathroom facility built on site now too. since i now live less than 2 miles from the trailhead, i anticipate using the area frequently once i get past the ogden marathon and start focusing more on trail running again. my average pace today was 11:13 per mile! it took awhile to find my trail legs, but once i did i was having a blast out there. back to the roads tomorrow.

| | 10 miles easy from work - east rainbow loop. late run today. really low on energy lately and have no idea why. physically it's tough but the worst is the mental aspect of it. this morning i gave up on running for good. not really but i'm playing that kind of game in my head. ridiculous. finally got out around 1:30 with a break in the rain. so i had great conditions with just light rain and breezes and perfect temps in the upper 30's.

| | 3 miles - easy st. out and back. last mile@7:47. a few days ago i decided to bail on the striders 30k this morning. i've got a list of excuses but basically i just wimped out. i'm in a mental swamp lately and decided to not stress about making the long drive, dealing with the weather (which turned out pretty ideal this morning, of course), lack of sleep etc. and just set my sights on the ogden marathon in three weeks. i'm hoping to get a last long run in early this week, then "taper". i don't have much to taper from but it is what it is. just grateful to be healthy and running.

| | streak is over. 117 days. for weeks i've been mentally battling myself over this and i guess i let it get away from me. i actually suited up today very late this afternoon and got about a quarter mile in before i realized i just couldn't continue. but it's not just mental. something feels very off physically - today my feet felt heavy and cold and my hamstrings felt uncharacteristically tight. anyway. life goes on. i run for enjoyment, and i wasn't enjoying the daily drama of trying to get that run in just for the sake of the streak. for some reason it wasn't a problem in 2012, but this year i can't hack it. of course at the moment i feel like ogden marathon is out, but i'll let that ride a few days and see how i feel after a few more runs.
