Favorite Running Quotes:

1.

"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.

Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.

A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."

~Nike Poster

2.           A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Lao-Tzu

You’ve no doubt heard this.  And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape.  You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.

But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal.  If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.

…and what I’d rather see you do is to get the goal out of mind completely, but rather focus on the process, not the outcome. -Jay Johnson Process orientation, not outcome orientation.

You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time.  And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

3.  Human beings are made up of flesh, blood and a miracle fiber called COURAGE! ~ George Patton

4.   Find the courage to be patient.

No running today since I ran yesterday.  I was planning to do the stairmill, but the dumb Gold's salesman had to talk about EVERY package possible when we renew our membership next month.  And while I was patiently waiting for him to shut his trap, my stairmill was taken.

So I did the bike for 30 minutes with the intent on doing lots of weights.

3x

lunge matrix with weights

push ups

sit ups/core

single leg hamstring lifts

dips

B6

LLL with weights  (oooooo....my buns are sore)

Ankle feels super good.  I made a few changes yesterday (took out my Super Feet, heel lift in the right shoe) and I hope it makes the difference (in addition to all the PT exercises).

Run 3 easy miles.  Ankle felt great.  Chatted with a gal next to me on the TM...and it made the run SO much faster.

Another round of LLL and B6

Stretch and foam roll

I showered and crawled back into bed to take my little nap before everyone got up for school.  But shortly thereafter, I had a kid complain of a stomach and then spent the rest of the morning dealing with pukes.  Great way to start the week!

42 minutes on the stair mill.  I was totally huffing and puffing today and felt like an old, out of shape lady.   Plus, I went through 2 sweat towels...so beautiful!!!  I guess I wasn't feeling the mojo.

I'm tired :)  My ankle felt a little creaky at the start of the run, but eventually warmed up.  I watched Law and Order and the time went by quickly.  I made an effort to keep my stride short.

Ankle was achy after, but seems to be okay now.

We took our kids up to the Utah Food Bank this morning to work in the warehouse.  Such a humbling  experience.  Unfortunately, I still don't think our kids get just HOW much they have.  It is a work-in-progress :)

I slept in this morning, so ended up going to the gym tonight.  So  many more dudes and dudettes in the evening...ughhhh!  Thanks Hubby for letting me sneak out!!

6 miles on the stair mill (50:33)

This was the first time in awhile that I got "high".  Maybe because I had enough sleep, food and energy.  I was pushing myself at the end and I felt very in control.  Ankle was just a tiny bit achy only in the fracture spot.

After I wiped up my ocean of sweat, I did 3x

I have a crazy schedule today, so I got my tired hiney out of bed and headed to the gym.  They have the music turned up SO loud that I have a hard time hearing my own music.

I found a new glute workout on pinterest.

50 squats

30 walking lunges

20 jump squats

30 side lunges

50 bridges

You are suppose to do it 3 times, but sadly I could only do it once.

3 slow miles on the TM.

LLL and B6 after the run.  Stretch and foam roll.

On a side note, I am really liking all the lifting.  I feel like I am getting stronger.

I decided to do my "long" run today so I could have 2 recovery days till my next run.  It wasn't that long ago that I was saying "I only have have to run 13 miles today".  Hopefully soon enough :)

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the run went this morning.  Though I was slow, the effort was consistent and I was really trying to keep my form in check (I still have a long ways to go on the form issue).

No time to stretch or foam roll.

On a side note:  My chiropractor had a "free day" if you bring in canned goods.  So I went to get an adjustment on Wednesday.  He will often do ART on my calves.  I usually put chiropractors into the "witch doctor" category, but he  has been helpful in certain areas.

So while I was getting my adjustment, he told me about a seminar he had gone to about adjusting ankles (and how the ankles take so much shock when we land while running....it supposedly helps athletes).  He did an ankle adjustment on me too and surprisingly it felt great.  I guess I'm still a bit wary, but my ankle feels good (probably due to a combination of things).

Ooooo...I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow :) We were planning on skiing at Brighton today, but UDOT said 4 wheel drive or chains were required so our fun day went down the tube. The mini-van didn't make the cut!!! So sledding it was and driving grandma all over town.

I was WIDE awake at 2:11am this morning and could not fall back to sleep.  I guess that is what happens when you sleep in on Sunday morning!!  Sometime in the wee hours of the morning I drifted back into Z-land and my alarm went blazing WAY to early!!

I only ran 4 miles this morning.  That's it.  No stretching, PT exercises or foam rolling.  I was only interested in taking a hot shower and crawling back into bed.

My ankle felt good.  But my knees were bothering me on Saturday and Sunday.  I think I did too many squats and squat jumps.  Gonna take a break from those for a few days.

After my morning nap, I sent my big kids off to school and took my preschooler to the Nutcracker with her school.  It has been since I was kids that  I've seen that ballet.  It was a very fun morning!

Crazy busy day!  Christmas sings, reader theaters, Nutcracker, Costco and dipped caramel apples.

Cross training day.

7 miles on the stair mill - 60:34.  I felt really great today (ankle felt great too!!!)

LLL, lots of stretching and foam rolling

On side note:  I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with Christmas.  WHY - I eat WAY TOO many treats.  I was getting candy ready for my kids' school pinata before school and ate 10 pieces (BEFORE I ate breakfast).  Chocolate covered cinnamon bears are my arch nemesis.  The peppermint junior mints.....mmmmmmm.  I no longer fit in the "skinny fat" category.  Just the "FAT" category.  The food madness needs to END!

I bought a resistance band with cuffs so I can put them around my ankles.  So I did the monster walk on the TM.  I could only go .6 mph but put the incline up to 15.  I did this for 15 minutes.  My thighs were burning.

3 miles on the TM.  Faster than normal.

Now to the bummer part of the workout.  I saw a bossu ball and went to pick it up to move it over to where I was doing my PT exercises and I dropped it on my left foot.  OUCH!!!!!!  Holy smoly that hurt (and still really hurts).

3x

10xsquats on bossu

10xplank with weighted row

LLL

When I got home, I took a shower and while I was washing my face my contact went to the back of my eye.  It took me an hour to try to get it out.

Honestly....I have no coordination!

I spent all day skiing at Brighton with my hubby and four kids.  It has been TEN years since I've hit the slopes (as in before I had children).  I was really nervous about remembering how to ski, but it is just like riding a bike.

I skied with my kids so that included green hills all day.  I realized (just like with running) it is harder to ski slow than to ski fast!  My hip flexors got a really good workout.  Lots of starting and stopping and snow-plowing!!!

Everyone is very tired!!

Catherine was kind enough to head all the way up to my house for a Christmas Eve run. When she pulled up my driveway was mostly dry with a few rain sprinkles. Then Jack Frost turned on his charm and a winter storm was in full force shortly after we left.

We headed up Lone Peak Hwy to the Murdock Canal Trail. Wow...that is a great trail!!!! We made fresh tracks and it was truly majestic! It was so fun to catchup with Catherine....our conversation didn't even skip a beat. Though our pace was slow, my legs were very tired by the end of the run. Running in the snow is hard work. A few inches had fallen while we were out.

I really miss running with her! Rachel was going to come, but needed to stay close to home. We missed her!

I decided to do my long run today, so I wouldn't feel guilty for taking 2 days off. My ankle was very sore after the run. I think running in the snow worked my legs HARD!!!! And I didn't tighten my ski boots enough, so my shins are bruised from skiing Saturday. Hopefully, they will recover soon.

We had a wonderful Christmas Eve! It was my turn to host, so I reserved our church building so my house wouldn't get trashed! We had such a fun time! Lots of games, good food, Wii and a piƱata. Minimal clean up too :)

I couldn't ask for a better day!

We had a bit of a Christmas disaster yesterday. Santa brought the wrong present. Did you know there is a difference between the Lego Batwing and the Lego Batcave. Now Santa knows.

So this morning hubby went to chat with Santa about fixing the problem and smashed his car. Thankfully, Grandpa was able to talk with Santa and all is right in the Lego world at our house.

I'm SO loving all this snow. But the snow doesn't love my ankle. Still very achy today.

My family went skiing today (I was official ski support...too many little kids).  Here is my family blog post about how I feel about skiing.  So I'm okay with skipping my workout...it was worth it!

Tim and I have been watching our friends/family member that are "the more mature families".  "More mature" meaning, they have raised GOOD, GREAT kids.  Not to say they don't have problems or issues.  Life has not been easy for them.  But they are consistently moving in the right direction.  They are constantly trying to be better and to make a stronger family bond.

One of the commonalities these families have is that parents have a created a family tradition.   Something that they can do together.  And have fun doing it.

Tim and I decided to give skiing a try as a family tradition.  We can do the sport now and hopefully when their teenagers, college students, married and eventually with grandkids.

The kids started ski lessons last year and have really continued to improve this year.  Our goal is to always leave the slopes happy.  Even if that means we leave a little early or skip a certain run.

We've been up to the Brighton Ski Resort three times this year.  Every time we go, the kids' skiing skills get better.  Now everyone can clip into their skies without help from a parent (this is a HUGE accomplishment)!!

Here are a few snippets from this weeks' ski trip (and they had some pretty sweet snow!!!)

Pink cheeks after a fun day making pizza and french fries:

Peachy was getting tired, so she and I played a roaring game of Uno in the lodge:

We always stop at the 7-11 to get a treat on the way down the mountain:

I really don't know if this plan is going to work.  I know there will trials, problems and other junk.  But I hope this togetherness will help get through life.  Maybe the 7-11 Slurpees will help too.

Peachy was up all night and ended up in our bed.  She wanted leg rubs at 1:32am.  I wonder if she is having growing pains.  Such a bad time though!!

4 long out of shape miles in the TM.

I did see a gal that I visit teach who is in rehab at the gym.  It was nice to see her and catch up.  I'm grateful for my own trials :)
