Favorite Running Quotes:

1.

"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.

Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.

A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."

~Nike Poster

2.           A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Lao-Tzu

You’ve no doubt heard this.  And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape.  You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.

But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal.  If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.

…and what I’d rather see you do is to get the goal out of mind completely, but rather focus on the process, not the outcome. -Jay Johnson Process orientation, not outcome orientation.

You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time.  And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

3.  Human beings are made up of flesh, blood and a miracle fiber called COURAGE! ~ George Patton

4.   Find the courage to be patient.

I dropped my little one off at preschool and ran from the school.  But I did a new route today.  I don't think I will be doing it again.  There was 1 mile of straight uphill.  It was suppose to be an easy day!

Oh, my hips have been hurting.  It woke me up last night.  I've got to go to the chiro on Monday!

After I picked up my little one and dropped her off at cousins house, I went and rode part of the mini-sprint course.  Lots of bikers out today.  There was a big track meet at UVU...so fun to see all the runners.  I really stink at biking!

12 miles (my farthest run this year)

TIME:  1:53:11 (AP 9:27) 9:47, 10:16, 9:26, 9:29, 9:32, 9:47, 9:26, 8:56, 9:12, 9:13, 9:19, 8:42)

Holy smokes am I slow!  This is the farthest I've run this year and this is the most weekly mileage EVER.  Lots of firsts!

It was SO fantastic to meet so many runners from the blog.  Everyone was so nice and friendly.  There was no way I could have done this run alone...so hooray for great company! I learn so many things from all you knowledgeable runners!

This was a challenging run for me because of the intense uphills.  I guess I'm not a very strong uphill climber.  Something to work on.  It was quite windy too.  My hip only hurt during a few parts of the run.

A good run, but not the best run (mostly because it was SO slow).

Early, early, early.....but because of all my glorious naps yesterday, I was awake!  Ran in the cardio cinema room and watched "We are Marshall".

I felt really good - no stiffness after Saturday's run.  Lots of stretching and foam roller.  Chiropractor this afternoon.

Ughhhh.....I'm feeling a bit defeated today.  My ankle (the one I got the stress fracture in) has been aching just a bit.  Sometimes, I wonder if it is a phantom ache or for real!  But I've been coming back so slow (I haven't increased my speed more than 10% a week, shoes are good, rest week every 3 weeks), so I don't know how I would have refractured it.

I had planned on doing my first speed workout of the season (4x400).  I probably shouldn't have done it today...I wasn't in the right frame of mind, I ran it alone, the wind was out of control, and it was speed.

But I ran to the track and battled the wind and it wasn't the best workout ever.

I wanted to do more of a warm up and cool down, but it was windy and raining and I was feeling a bit grumpy about the situation.

I think I will take the next day or 2 off just to see how things feel.

I got new running shoes last night...they always feel like butter!  I can't decide how I feel.  My left ankle is sore in a different spot (this is my SF ankle) and my right shin is sore.  But I'm not sure if it hurts enough to require rest or to just run through it.

The thing is....I'm not in a big hurry to bump up my miles.  My main race of the year is SGM - which is in October (though I have lots of half marathons, I only want to really UV half and Hobble....which are both later in the year).  It is only April.  So if I need to chill for awhile, that is alright.  RIGHT???!!!

I just got back from the doctor.  Two more stress reactions (not quite as bad as a fracture).  Honestly.

So I'm out for 4 weeks and have to start rebuilding all over again.

I'm feeling quite defeated and my spirit is crushed.  I've really tried to "come back" from the last injury slowly and smart (and the doctor said I have), but my body just isn't having it.

Sad sad sad day.

Since I found out about my stress reactions, I wasn't going to do this race.  The main reason I did it was because Telos wouldn't rollover my registration or give me a refund and I didn't want to throw $50 out the window.

Since I didn't train at all this past week and my hubby was doing the race, I went into it was a "this is going to be fun" attitude.

We picked up our babysitter at 7:00am and headed to the Orem Rec Center.  We got our race numbers, timing chips, and body marking.  Because we got there so early, we got front row in the transition area.  The man and woman on either side won.  We won't be doing that again...we aren't in that crowd yet!

We both forgot water bottles, so Tim ran to Albertsons and got some.  It would have been a long bike and run without water.

The weather was perfect!  I quickly lost Tim during the run.  I thought he was right behind me.  But I had my eyes on the girl in the pink shirt.  She had a "30" on her calf and was in my age group.  She got a little ahead of me during the run, but I transitioned faster than her, so we got on the bike at the same time.  We battled back and forth up and down the hills.  But she got me on the last hill.....my legs were on FIRE!  Next time pink-shirt girl!

One thing about this race, I felt like I could never catch my breath.  Maybe it was because I hadn't run all week.  But I was sucking wind!

I really HATE swimming.  When I jumped in the pool, I was still breathing hard from the bike and my legs felt like lead.  I kept thinking to myself, "6 more laps...5 more laps...etc".  The last time I had been in the pool was my last triathlon in November.  I actually swam faster this time.  Maybe training is over-rated :)

When I got out of the pool, I sat by the wall hoping I wouldn't die.  Then I saw Tim swim to the finish.  He was having an off day and I was really lucky I beat him.  Next time I won't be so lucky!

I'm pleased with the results given the situation.  I probably tacked on a week to my recovery.

Ankle has felt really good lately.  I've had lots of thoughts and learning on this whole experience, but just don't have the time to write them down (lots and lots and lots of sewing lately).  Seeing the podiatrist on Friday.

Weather was beautiful today.  Slow run..feel alittle out of shape.  Just glad to be running.  My ankle feels SO much better.  I don't think I had a stress reaction....tendonitis maybe?  Again....I use to think I knew a lot about running and am realizing I know nothing about running.

Today...just glad to be outside and shuffling along.

4.5 miles on the stair climber.  Some days I think it is harder than running because you need more coordination running up those darn stairs.  Sweat fest!

6.5 miles

57:41 (AP 8:52) 9:39, 9:23, 9:10, 8:38, 8:17, 8:22, 4:10

Yesterday, I went to see my podiatrist.  I was considering canceling my appointment, but I had waited 2 weeks to get in to see him.  He told me what I already knew...tendonitis in my ankle and a small area of shin splints on my other leg.  NO STRESS FRACTURES OR ANYTHING!!!!!!  I think that my tendonitis ankle was caused by wearing that darn walking cast for so long last year.  It totally made my ankle weak.  He gave me a steroid for the shin splint area, told me to wear compression socks and to not run so much.

I asked him about barefoot running/wearing minimalist shoes.....he told me that was a crack case....I would tear my body up and die an early death.  Okay then.....

So I went out for an easy 6.5 miles (I was able to roll my Thanksgiving Point Half Marathon to next year).  It felt good even though my first half was SO slow.

When I got home, my hubby asked how I felt and I responded "SLOW".  Then he gave me the best "food for thought" I've had all day.....AT LEAST YOU ARE RUNNING.  Amen!
