Favorite Running Quotes:
1.
"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.
Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.
A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."
~Nike Poster
2. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
You’ve no doubt heard this. And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape. You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.
But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal. If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.
You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time. And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

I need new couches, so I need some decorating inspiration! Anyone have/used Slipcover couches? Thoughts or opinions on them? Back to running....felt really good! Hooray for running!

| Hubby goes to the temple on Thursday mornings, so I usually run in the evenings. I had every intention of going to lift weights and then to spin tonight, but lacked any ounce of motivation. I don't know what my deal was, but.... So I ended up just lifting (regretting that I didn't do spin). Mostly upper body (I need to figure out what everything is called) and a few leg exercises. Then lots and lots and lots of stretching. I need to do that every day.

I felt like I could have run longer and faster, but kept my slow run slow (not that I am really all that fast). Push ups/sit ups/planks (golly those are planks are hard).

Run felt ok today at the gym (just not super motivated). Too lazy to get up this morning, so I went gyming this evening. Done and done!

| 39 minutes - The miles went on forever. My arms were sore from below workout and I was thinking about the big pot of chicken noodle soup at home.
Lifting upper body (I totally stole this workout from Kelli! But I didn't do as heavy as weights as she used.) Upper Body - repeated 3x
overhead presses - 15 reps tricep kickbacks - 15 reps each side bench press - 15 reps biceps curls - 20 reps tricep dips, 30
front raise - 15 reps lateral raise - 15 reps tricep extensions - 15 reps

| 38:17 minutes So so so tired this afternoon. I've been lazy all week and have been going to the gym in the evenings. But not today and I am feeling the effects! My arms are sore from yesterday's lifting, but what a great feeling! I got on the scale last night and couldn't believe my weight - 15 lbs over what I would like. How does it creep up so fast! Why is it so hard to have self mastery over food? It is like an addiction almost. I've never had to worry about my weight until these past few years. It's been on my mind constantly! I love to eat treats - right now my favorite are the mini chocolate covered donuts. How can I get this self control over stupid FOOD! But my run felt great and I am excited for lifting and 6.5 tomorrow!

63:10 minutes Have you ever felt like "you've been hit by a truck" tired? That is how I feel today after this workout. A nap is definitely in order. I lifted arms and a few legs today. It took me about 3 miles to shake out whatever stiffness I had from lifting. I felt good but the miles seem to go by slowly! I bought a visor to wear and hopefully act as a sweat absorption device! It didn't bother too much, but it was definitely wet by the end of the run and I still had to keep wiping my face. I've eaten pretty good today. No soda or treats. But I am really craving something sweet - I should go and chew some gum!

| 38:17 minutes I lifted legs today. I can't tell you how much I hate doing squats. HATE HATE HATE! But I did them and it is over...but thinking about them makes me angry :) It took me a few miles to shake the stiffness out of my legs during the run. There were oodles and oodles and oodles of folks (dudes and dollies) at the gym at 7:00am (hooray for sleeping in on a holiday). But I got to all the weights I needed and a treadmill! Off to go sledding...my kids really need to burn off some energy. I got so many "I'm bored"'s this morning. When I hear those, the chore chart comes out...I got all my drawers vacuumed out and my van!

I felt really good this morning. Last summer when I was riding my bike up the Alpine Loop, there was a group of runners coming down the mountain. Single file and bright neon yellow jerseys (smart considering how narrow that canyon is). They were BOOKING down that mountain. When I finished riding, I went running on a nearby trail and they were STILL running. I remember thinking to myself how impressed I was with these ladies because they were fast and looked sharp in their matching shirts AND looked intimidating. Well, one of them ran on the treadmill next to me this morning and she was cooking. Funny how runners notice each other and all congregate to the same places. Last night, my hubby got a text from a buddy that a couple had bailed out on this Ragnar team....would we be interested? Doing that race has been on my bucket list forever and I am SO SO SO excited to do it! Maybe I will change my mind after running for 2 straight days, but for now I can't wait! It is great to be a runner!

Feeling that fresh air is always good for the soul! Second, I ran a lot faster than I thought I was going. I felt like I was totally plugging along (like a 10:00pace) and was pleasantly surprised. I still have a long way to go on speed, but at least I am running! Good luck Painter Half Marathon Runners!

| 66:19 minutes Oh what a workout! I told my hubby I was going to be awhile this morning! First, I lifted legs and then arms (for 1 hour). I haven't had a chance to lift since Monday, so I REALLY wanted to get it in. I got my orthotics this week and stuck them in my running shoes. They felt like butter - really supporting my high arch. I started my run and 2 miles into it my feet are on FIRE! The orthotics were rubbing and rubbing and I was hoping I wasn't bleeding. The next 5 miles I just tried to plow through. I would stop periodically to get water and wipe my face (and give my feet a rest), and starting back up was super painful. The sad part is my legs felt really great, no ankle pain and I didn't feel like I was huffing and puffing. I need to get some mole skins ASAP! Can't wait to read the race reports!

| 42:19 minutes I slept in this morning and it felt heavenly! I left my house this afternoon with way too many neighborhood kids, pumpkin bread remnants on the floor, and dinner still to be cooked. A perfect time to go to the gym! I lifted legs and did some core work tonight. My lower back always hurts after I do squats (I HATE SQUATS...one more time...I HATE SQUATS). I'm assuming I am doing them wrong, but I don't know what I am doing wrong. I ran in the cardio cinema and watched some dude totally crash on the TM. Poor guy. I felt really good and am going to try some speed tomorrow. I've been wearing my orthotics during the day and am becoming more use to them. Someday, I may try them running.

| Oh....I'm so tired today...way too many kids up in the middle of the night. My favorite line of the middle of the night madness is "Mom I have the coughs because of the new dishwasher). Sweet....our new dishwasher gives out coughs! I did my first "speed" workout in well over a year. I'm not sure it would really be qualified as speed since I'm still not that fast, but..... 2 mile warm up at 6.2 mph 5x400 at 9.0 (6:40 mile or 1:40 quarter..I think) (2 summers ago when I was training hard before my injury, I was running those at a 1:35...sigh....) Cooled down until I hit 4.5 miles Speed work is such a mental game. A hard game for me to play! But it is done and over!

I knew I couldn't do my scheduled 8 miles, so I settled for 6. I will turn this week into an easy week. My legs felt great, but I was hacking up a lung and had to stop lots to blow my nose. I'm sure the people around me wanted me to leave! Off to bed! 58:43 minutes

| 42:31 minutes I was wide awake for some odd reason this morning, so I didn't mind getting up in the "middle of night" aka 4:55am. The gym was super busy...all the treadmills were full. I saw "gangsta" girl this morning. WOW...on Saturday, she had on long regular pants (not workout pants), some vest on top of a sports bra - wide open though, some neckerchief hanging off the side of her belt loop and some weird gangsta belt. Oh yeah... the best part in the walk/skip gangsta hop/walk. I don't get it.....she old enough to be my mom! I had a good run the TM. The last mile seemed to take awhile, but got through it. Not as much coughing today and I am feeling much better (too bad my kids are all getting sick). Off to do laundry!

I parked at the end of the preschool teacher's street and headed up into Highland. It was a long 4 miles up hill. I decided not to look at my Garmin and just listen for the 4 beeps to know that I have gone 4 miles. I was going to listen to the songs on my Ipod and not skip any. The first half of the run seemed to take forever. But whenever I do long runs, I always struggle that first bit. I think to myself...7.5 miles to go...7 miles to go and I need to stop because it makes the runs drag on. I passed some gym in Highland and I stopped in and asked if I could use their drinking fountain. I saw a friend from ATL there...too bad I looked like a scary monster! The second half went by so much faster. I did look at my watch more and skipped ahead to my favorite songs on the Ipod. Music is such a motivator. My new favorite group is The DearJane Girls...definitely cowgirl music!
Finishing this run gives me alittle bit more confidence. I still have such a long ways to go to rebuild my fitness and speed, but I didn't die and ran negative splits.

| 42:20 minutes I took the kids to the dreaded daycare at the gym...luckily there were some kids from our ward in there. So it made better! Upper body lifting (one of Kelli's awesome workouts) 4.5 miles on the TM. I watched some cooking show and watched all the dudes and dollies. Some gal walked in and every male head turned and watched this beauty. Amazing! Since I've increased my mileage (and it hasn't been a ton) and lifting (alittle), I am so darn tired all the time. I've been eating a lot of stuff with iron, but I am wiped out by the end of the day (some days, I take a short power nap). A good reason to be tired!

I think I may be shin splints right above my ankle (on the inside). I've been icing like a mad woman, massaging, doing my ankle strengthening exercises. *sigh* I did feel really good on my run today, but I probably shouldn't have done it (in retrospect). I was doing so great on my ankle...I haven't increased my mileage more than 10 % a week, I've kept all my runs slower and I take 2 days off. Why...Why...Why

I've been stretching, doing my ankle exercises, wearing my brace and icing A LOT. But I'm not sure how it feels. OR if I should keep running. I am doing my long run with a good friend and Saturday, so I'm hoping they will start to feel better. So frustrating!

| 2 miles on the stair climber 3 miles on the tread mill (AP 10 mm) Lifted upper body and core. I used to think I knew everything about running. But the older I get, the more I realize how much I DON'T know. I wanted to run today, but thought I shouldn't go the whole 5 miles. So after lifting, I did 2 miles on the stair climber to warm up and finished on the TM. I tried to put my foot in an ice bucket, but it was to flippin' cold. So I settled on an ice cup. So far it feels ok, but I'm not getting any hopes up.

My shin splints don't hurt as bad and I feel like I have that *running fire* back. I get so grumpy when I can't run. I am excited to do my long run tomorrow with my good friend. I don't think I am going to wear my orthotics...they tore up my feet today. I'm going on a date with Tim tonight to celebrate 12 years of marriage bliss! (9:45, 9:42, 9:47, 10:58, 12:06, 9:59, 9:00, 8:57, 7:46) I ran with my good running bud Sarah this freezing morning. We met at the mouth of Provo Canyon. While I was waiting for, I noticed how windy it was - FUN! It has been over a year since I had seen her, so we had lots to talk about and the time went very fast. But when we hit Bridal Veil, the trail wasn't plowed. It was a thick chunk of ice with lots of snow - very very very slow going (hence the 10:58 and 12:06 mile pace). It was almost a walk/jog. But once we got out of there, it was good moving again. I had taped my ankle well, but figured it would be sore after the run (especially since we had all that ice in the middle). So I've been icing and stretching like a mad lady all morning. We'll see! I was warm during the run - the wind had subsided once we got into the canyon. But I was shaking the whole drive home and even after a warm shower. Brrrrr....... The rest of my lungs and legs felt good! Hooray for a great run and a BIG nap - those long runs always wipe me out (and it wasn't even that long!).

| I quickly turned my alarm off this morning with the intent of NOT getting up. But then I laid in bed thinking that I there was no way I would be able to make up the miles later today or this week. So I got my lazy hiney out of bed and ran outside instead of at the gym (I was running out of time since hubby had to leave for work). It was very warm this morning - only 1 pair of tights, shirt, and jacket (no hat or gloves). I didn't look at my Garmin at all...just listened for the mile beeps. I knew I was going slow, but I didn't really care. Just wanted to take it easy after the long run on Saturday. 38:51 minutes (10:34 - I had a hard time getting going, 9:36, 9:34, 9:03). My kids woke up at the CRACK OF DAWN so excited for Valentines Day. They made me breakfast in bed (soggy cereal and a squished banana). I am SO tired! But I still have a class party, swim lessons, dance, tutor, homework, FHE (which is sugar cookies and heart attack), bath and bed. It is a Cherry Coke day!

| 52:17 minutes (9:03, 9:02, 8:52, 8:35, 8:33, 8:08) Hubby had an early morning assignment, so I slept in and ran this afternoon. Heavenly! The weather was so nice and warm. I ran in tights and a short sleeve shirt...amazing! I was planning on doing my 5 mile route, but when I got to my favorite down hill stretch, the road was closed. They were making a HUGE trench for the canal and had a big pipe - there was NO crossing it! So I turned around and started to head back. I saw another runner and flagged him down to ask if the street I was on had construction. It didn't thankfully, so I didn't totally have to completely retrace my steps. I was probably going a lot faster than I should have (not that it is all that fast), but some days it is awesome to open up a can of whoop A..... and let 'er rip! It felt good to open the stride.

Dropped my youngest off at preschool and ran from the teachers house (I haven't been to the gym all week...I'm liking this warmer weather!). I'm still feeling so so so slow. I know I am building my aerobic base from scratch and it takes time! But....

I told RAD that I was oodles and oodles slower than she was and to please turn on the speed when she needed too. But she stayed with me the whole time. She wasn't even breathing hard! The run felt good, but my ankle started to ache somewhere along the run. So I stopped and stretched for a minute. I think I am going to make it an easy week next week.
It was warm outside this morning, but there was a light sprinkle. It didn't bother until I got in my car and started to get cold. Brrrr...... There weren't lots of runners out this morning, but a few die-hards! Again, the more I run, the more I realize JUST how much I don't know about running. It was awesome to listen to RAD talk about her running history. I've realized that running is hard on your body and it is bound to get injured sometimes. It's just part of that amazing high we get...it has to crash sometimes. Thanks RAD for the great morning!

| I had planned on this being an easy/low mile week and wowzer did I ever need it! I'm not sure why my body felt like it had been hit by a truck after Saturday's run, but it did. Aches and pain and cursing at my achy achy ankle. The weird thing is, I didn't run any faster than in my training runs and haven't increased more than 10%. I planned on running 3 miles, but after a mile my ankle was sore. So I hopped on the bike and finished up my time. I am out of shape on the bike and I need to get to crackin' cause our mini sprint is coming up soon! These kind of days totally make me depressed and want to crawl in a deep dark hole. I have this paranoia that I will be out for another year and it makes me crazy!

| I'm feeling better about life today. The sun is shining and the air is warm! I am really ready for spring. All this cold and snowy stuff is making me depressed!
I dropped everyone off at school and headed to the gym for spin class. The instructor was awesome and the class was FULL! Spin/riding is awesome and so flippin hard! But I got a call from the preschool teacher in the middle of class...the antibotics have given my youngest a case of the runs and I need to come and change her. FUN! Stayed for a few more minutes, went to preschool teacher's house, changed daughter, ran around her neighborhood till class was done. My ankle felt really good, so I ran a bit more on my sweet neighbors treadmill. I've been stretching, doing ankle exercises, and icing like crazy. Hopefully, we are on the upward swing.

Ankle/lower leg still ached some, but definitely better. Got to watch my trio preform in the 1st grade talent show. We had a hoola hooper, jump roper, and a "Jedi Demonstration". They weren't quite as cool as Lindsay Dunkley's little guy's awesome dance! He knows how to rock the house!

So when I got home, I looked like a zombie and made my kids nervous. Again, I need spring to get here! I was so lazy today! I spent the afternoon lying in bed reading a new book - totally productive! Some kid at school cut my son's hair today...hello, we are in 1st grade, shouldn't we be past that?????

| 1:05 As soon as I saw the snow this morning, I chickened out and headed to the gym for the treadmill. I saw a gal I kinda know (from the gym, summer pool and other various places) and 2 of her friends. The only open treadmill was next to them, so I hopped on. I asked the ladies what their workout was...20 miles on the flippin' treadmill. Not only were they going far, but their speed was at an 8.3 mph (like a 7:15 mile). They were some tough chicks...fast, tough chicks! And I felt really really slow and frumpy next to them at my 9:00 minute mile. That is a battle I always fight with myself...comparing myself to others. I need to be happy with what I have and can do. Show me the weakness and I will make it strong :) Off to lunch with 2 of my bestest friends! Hopefully a nap later on too. Oh...and I am getting a massage tonight. I was suppose to get one last weekend, but she had the stomach flu. Can't wait!

I was up all night because I though I would sleep through my alarm. Then, when I got home, my little guy was up super early, so no morning nap. Urghhh.....I am tired! I felt really good during the run though. I wanted to go alittle faster to get home and get back to bed (though my plan backfired). Lots of ice and stretching this morning.

Today's weather SO boosted my spirits. I got a bunch of house cleaning done (even opened a few window)..yucky cleaning that I hate to do! I was suppose to do 6 miles today. My favorite route was partially closed due to construction, so I totally winged it. I thought I needed to add on about .5-.75miles to my made up route because I thought I would be short, but ended up going WAY over my mileage for the day. This run was a real mental booster for me. I went a lot faster than I had planned on and felt really strong during those hills. This run give me hope that I am getting stronger and faster (or maybe it is just a fluke!).

I'm always a little nervous about running with people I haven't run with before. .....I'm afraid they will leave me in the dust. But I felt like I was kinda on the same pace as Smooth, Karen, Luzy Lew and Rachel (or they were being really nice and slowing down to hang with me!!). The weather was perfect and lots of great conversation. It was so fun to get to know everyone better. 4 miles arrived so quickly and I was sad to say good bye (but not too sad that I didn't run 15 miles)! The 4 miles back were not nearly as fun! My ankle and knees feel really good. I even got a massage today (my favorite gal had to reschedule a few times) and oh man....It was fantastic. I think I'm going to make this a regular occurrence. I had to get up even earlier (4:45am), so I could get my 6 miles in before hubby had to leave for work. The back to back workouts WEAR ME OUT! So it was a slow go on the TM. I watched some dumb show on the cooking channel (it was like an amazing race). I stopped every 2 miles to stretch. My right shins started bugging me today. I didn't get much of a nap after the gym (the kids woke up really early because it was "backwards" day at school and they were excited). Then I had to go on a preschool field trip to Cabelas. I could hardly stay awake. 30 minutes of yoga, icing and ankle exercises.....NOW I am going to take a nap. A BIG BIG BIG nap.

| 40 minutes My goal was to go as slow as I could. My body felt so "rickety" all day. Weird things ached...places that have never hurt before. My right glute/lower back was on FIRE. I may have slept on it weird. I don't know how you all run a gazillion miles a week. I feel like I am falling apart! But my slow slow slow run was just what I needed. Most of the achiness went away. Plus the weather was beautiful.....a shorts and t-shirt kind of a day. Lots of stretching throughout the day and ice after the run. Rest day tomorrow...Rex Lee 10K on Saturday. The first race of the year. My goal is just to finish. I need to have a starting point for racing goals.

AP (8:26) I took my two big girls to see Little Women last night at the Salt Lake Children's Theater. It was a great distraction from thinking about the race. I've been kinda nervous about this 10K...but I don't know why. I know I'm starting "all over" having taken a year off from my stress fracture and I've really only been training since the end of December, but I think I have magical powers that make me race like a speedster. I know it is going to take me a lot longer than 3 months to get faster!
This was my hubby's first 10K and I was really excited for him. There weren't a lot of runners, but enough to feel like a race. I warmed up 1 mile.
1-8:55 Lots of trying to get around people and find my groove
2-9:07 LONG, slow uphill. I passed a lot of people, but it was definitely a hard mile. A long mile.
3-7:53 Start of the long downhill. My lower back started to hurt....not sure if this was because of the downhill. But I thought to myself, go fast while the fast is going. I had some older guy come from behind me. We stayed together for a lot of this mile. He was my "go-to" guy. He would pull ahead and I would follow. Thanks guy!
4-8:03 Still down hill and feeling good, but lower back still sore.
5-8:23 The course started to flatten out here. It is hard when you've been flying down hill and then it takes "effort" to keep up the speed. I was starting to get to that "puke" zone. I chilled out a tad and was hoping it would go away. Kinda.
6-8:26 I just kept saying to myself, "Just don't puke! Just don't puke! Just don't puke". Once I got onto the track, I saw some of our friends and family, gave them the pump fist and finished strong. The stinky part of the end of the race was NO WATER - you had to walk to the other end of the track. I wanted to run Tim in, but I just saw him enter the track. So I cheered obnoxiously for him. He did a fantastic job (54 minutes). This is his first 10K and he's only run a few 6 mile runs. Hooray for him.
.2-1:13 I cooled down 1.5 miles. Perfect weather for the race...shorts and t-shirt. Lots of people had on tights, hats, gloves....I was just sweating looking at them! So overall, I feel like I ran a "decent" race. An 8:26 average is about the fastest that I've done on a long run....so that seems right. But I'm ready to be faster. I'm ready for a nap! **I just saw the posted results - HAH! I got 3rd in my age group! Hot dog!

| 2 miles on stairclimber to warm up (counting towards running miles cause it is as HARD as running) 3 miles - AP 10:00 Holy moly did I have a hard weekend. I must have done something during that 10K on Saturday cause my hiney has been on FIRE on weekend. The very top of my right glute has been in a constant spasm. I've done lots of stretching and sat on a heating pad. Hubby used his elbow to try and work out the mess and that did seem to help. Holy cow...what is the deal? After a little on-line research, I bought some tennis balls today and rolled around on those. It hurt like the dickens while doing it, but felt better after. Running is definitely hard on the body. Other than that issue, I really feel great. No aches or pains from the race, just a pain in the butt.

So I pumped up my bike tires (sorta...hubby had to help...my bike boy!). I didn't have lots of time since I wanted to run too. I did my hilliest route and enjoyed every minute of it. My hiney didn't hurt at all. When I got home, I quickly changed into running shorts (don't like to run in biking shorts), grabbed my hat and a drink of water and headed out. I didn't remember how sore my piformis was today until I started running. My first mile - it was really sore, but the soreness eased with the miles. I totally winged my running route today...and it was nice. I had no idea how far it was, but ended up being exactly 6 miles...just what I needed. I went to the chiropractor today and got adjusted. Sometimes I think *they* don't work, but today I did. I also got e-stim on my sore area. And my hiney was SO SO sore today. I rolled around on the tennis ball a lot and did lots of stretching.
I was really surprised with my time today....pretty close to my race on Saturday. NICE!

I dropped my youngest off at preschool and ran from the school. I don't know the area as well, so I totally winged the course. Lots of turns...I was hoping I would be able to find my way back! Thankfully, I did!
It was a bit breezy outside, so it took me a few miles to warm up and get into my groove. I stopped at mile 4 and 7 for water and a few jelly beans. Now that is has been several hours since I have run, I still feel really good. No major soreness or weird aches, but we will see. I've been running a lot more weekly miles and I think that has helped my longer weekend runs.
After picking up my youngest from preschool, I dropped her off at her cousins house and decided to ride the tri bike course. It was still windy out, so I didn't do the full course....just the curvy and hilly parts. Oh man.....is that a big hill (400 S in Orem). My second time up the hill, my quads started shaking. They were tired! That is all I have done today (I did get a shower in, thank goodness). Good thing I don't do this all the time or my house would look like a war zone.

I finally finished painting my master bedroom and bath and am very pleased with the results. During all my painting pondering hours, I decided I want to paint my entertainment center next. But first I have to catch up on some sewing stuff. Beautiful day for a run...shorts and t-shirt. I ate a bunch of junk today and it felt like lead in my stomach. Darn Easter candy! I clicked my Garmin on and listened for beeps, but didn't look at the time. I was really huffing and puffing......feeling a bit disturbed by this, I looked down at my watch and realized that I was going WAY faster than I had planned (9 minute mile). I decided to keep the pace for as long as I could. I had .5 mile till home and I was at puke phase. I didn't let up and just hoped to make it. I did. I was really pleased with this run. I wanted to run my feel and it took me a lot faster than I had planned. It is always nice to have an out of the blue fast run.

This was a challenging run for me because of the intense uphills. I guess I'm not a very strong uphill climber. Something to work on. It was quite windy too. My hip only hurt during a few parts of the run. A good run, but not the best run (mostly because it was SO slow).

| Ughhhh.....I'm feeling a bit defeated today. My ankle (the one I got the stress fracture in) has been aching just a bit. Sometimes, I wonder if it is a phantom ache or for real! But I've been coming back so slow (I haven't increased my speed more than 10% a week, shoes are good, rest week every 3 weeks), so I don't know how I would have refractured it.
I had planned on doing my first speed workout of the season (4x400). I probably shouldn't have done it today...I wasn't in the right frame of mind, I ran it alone, the wind was out of control, and it was speed. But I ran to the track and battled the wind and it wasn't the best workout ever. WU - 1 mile 1- 1:37 2-1:38 3-1:38 4-1:48 CD - 1 mile I wanted to do more of a warm up and cool down, but it was windy and raining and I was feeling a bit grumpy about the situation. But I'm not sure if it hurts enough to require rest or to just run through it. The thing is....I'm not in a big hurry to bump up my miles. My main race of the year is SGM - which is in October (though I have lots of half marathons, I only want to really UV half and Hobble....which are both later in the year). It is only April. Telos Mini Sprint Triathlon (3.1 Miles) 01:12:09, Place in age division: 4 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 0.00 | 3.10 | 3.10 |
|
Since I found out about my stress reactions, I wasn't going to do this race. The main reason I did it was because Telos wouldn't rollover my registration or give me a refund and I didn't want to throw $50 out the window. Since I didn't train at all this past week and my hubby was doing the race, I went into it was a "this is going to be fun" attitude. We picked up our babysitter at 7:00am and headed to the Orem Rec Center. We got our race numbers, timing chips, and body marking. Because we got there so early, we got front row in the transition area. The man and woman on either side won. We won't be doing that again...we aren't in that crowd yet! We both forgot water bottles, so Tim ran to Albertsons and got some. It would have been a long bike and run without water.
The weather was perfect! I quickly lost Tim during the run. I thought he was right behind me. But I had my eyes on the girl in the pink shirt. She had a "30" on her calf and was in my age group. She got a little ahead of me during the run, but I transitioned faster than her, so we got on the bike at the same time. We battled back and forth up and down the hills. But she got me on the last hill.....my legs were on FIRE! Next time pink-shirt girl! One thing about this race, I felt like I could never catch my breath. Maybe it was because I hadn't run all week. But I was sucking wind!
I really HATE swimming. When I jumped in the pool, I was still breathing hard from the bike and my legs felt like lead. I kept thinking to myself, "6 more laps...5 more laps...etc". The last time I had been in the pool was my last triathlon in November. I actually swam faster this time. Maybe training is over-rated :) When I got out of the pool, I sat by the wall hoping I wouldn't die. Then I saw Tim swim to the finish. He was having an off day and I was really lucky I beat him. Next time I won't be so lucky! I'm pleased with the results given the situation. I probably tacked on a week to my recovery. Run: 25:30 T1: 1:01 Bike:33:59 T2: 1:06 Swim: 10:31 Total: 1:12:09

| Time: 36:13 (AP 8:36) 9:08 (BIG HILL), 8:44, 8:23, 8:09, 1:47 Weather was beautiful today. Slow run..feel alittle out of shape. Just glad to be running. My ankle feels SO much better. I don't think I had a stress reaction....tendonitis maybe? Again....I use to think I knew a lot about running and am realizing I know nothing about running. Today...just glad to be outside and shuffling along.

| 6.5 miles 57:41 (AP 8:52) 9:39, 9:23, 9:10, 8:38, 8:17, 8:22, 4:10 Yesterday, I went to see my podiatrist. I was considering canceling my appointment, but I had waited 2 weeks to get in to see him. He told me what I already knew...tendonitis in my ankle and a small area of shin splints on my other leg. NO STRESS FRACTURES OR ANYTHING!!!!!! I think that my tendonitis ankle was caused by wearing that darn walking cast for so long last year. It totally made my ankle weak. He gave me a steroid for the shin splint area, told me to wear compression socks and to not run so much. I asked him about barefoot running/wearing minimalist shoes.....he told me that was a crack case....I would tear my body up and die an early death. Okay then..... So I went out for an easy 6.5 miles (I was able to roll my Thanksgiving Point Half Marathon to next year). It felt good even though my first half was SO slow. When I got home, my hubby asked how I felt and I responded "SLOW". Then he gave me the best "food for thought" I've had all day.....AT LEAST YOU ARE RUNNING. Amen!

Time: 55:43 AP 9:22 (9:53, 9:37, 9:25, 9:15, 9:09, 8:51) Beautiful day for a run! It was slow and I stopped twice to stretch (my darn glutes are SO tight and seem to spasm constantly). I felt ok...my left ankle tendon was tender and my right leg has a small spot with shin splints. Lots of ice today and rolling on a baseball. Going 8 tomorrow with my hubby. I don't think we have run today (excluding races) since we had kids. Hooray for an early morning babysitter.

Oh well...it was a beautiful morning to be outside! Ran with my hubby Tim! This was his longest run EVER and he did a great job! It was a rolling course (which included some BIG hiking spots....trail blazing). We had three different water fountains (hooray for the water being turned on). It was starting to get warm. I was really proud of him....during the last 2 miles, I picked up the pace (more of my normal pace) and he quickly followed. I think he is starting to understand the importance of having a running buddy....they can push you! Ankle tendon and shin splint area sore. Lots of ice and Advil. I had a massage tonight.....I need one every week!

| 53:21 (AP 8:59) 9:34, 9:26, 9:13, 8:49, 8:44, 7:32 (definitely a progression run) Dropped my little one off at preschool and ran from the school. I love running up there...nice to have different scenery! The weather was beautiful, but a bit windy. I ended up taking off my long sleeve shirt and running in my shorts and tank. It was a BIG up hill run for the first 3 miles. My legs were a bit heavy after yesterdays weights and I was huffing and puffing. I felt a lot better on the way down. Wish I would have had some water. Semi-injury spots felt good during the run. I wore my new compression socks (such a fashion statement) and they seem to be helping. I've been really diligent about icing and massage them (I even got out the ice cream scoop last night and did some Gratson scraping on it...ouch). Some days they are sore and some days not. But at least I am running. Sit ups and push ups in the parking lot after.

| Time: 45:18 AP 9:06 (9:14, 9:17, 9:27, 9:06, 8:12,) I'm still not adjusted from getting home from Europe. I was up at 4:45am....wide awake. So I headed out and hoped to get a nap in before everyone woke up. I ran the neighborhood street with lots of street lights...but it is hilly. I didn't look at the Garmin and just ran. My lower legs started to hurt immediately, but the pain subsided after a few miles. As soon as I stopped running, the pain stopped. So I went to the doctor today and he said it was shin splints. I guess I am just ULTRA paranoid! I told me to try taking out my orthotics...they maybe causing the pain. We will give it a try.

I've had a love/hate relationship with running. I will have a great run, then my shin will ache and ache. I will rest a few days because of stress fracture paranoia and come back. Frustrating. I'm committed to running the UV half and the Ragnar and then I will take it race by race. This was a fairly good run. I struggled between 3-4 miles....it was hot, I was thristy and wish I had a running bud. I can tell my aerobic fitness isn't where it should be, but when I don't/can't run every day it won't be. I'm learning......

| I don't even know my time. My son wanted to ride his bike with me, so we went an easy 2 miles. He did a great job on his bike. He was alittle nervous to ride on "the road" and I had to keep reminding him to look forward and not back at me. It was super fun to have him come and listen to him sing various songs. I use to ride my bike with my mom when she would run. I LOVED to ride with her. We need to work on upping his mileage so we can go further together.

I met Rachel, Smooth, and Karen at the Draper City Park for a 12 mile run. Last time I ran this trail, I had a horrible run. It was windy and I felt like crud. Not today, the sun was shining and I felt much stronger. I knew that it was an up and down course. I was able to hold a conversation the whole way, so I wasn't running that hard. At mile 11, Smooth yelled "let's finish strong", so I took off. I thought everyone was coming right behind me and when I realized they weren't I kept going (I was probably breaking some sort of "running with a group" rule). I was surprised how much speed I had left and how good I felt.
I feel so much better about running the UVHM next weekend.
I learned so much about running from those sweet ladies....I was lucky to spend the early morning with them! Thanks gals! Still waiting to see how my lower leg feels.

Utah Valley Half Marathon (13.15 Miles) 01:54:00 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 0.00 | 13.15 | 13.15 |

1:54:00 AP 8:43 9:00, 8:21, 9:13, 8:52, 8:37, 8:38, 8:42, 8:44, 8:40, 8:40, 8:41, 8:35, 8:40, 1:12 As of yesterday morning, I wasn't going to run the race. My lower right leg has been bugging and I was feeling down in the dumps about it. But I decided last minute I was going to do and try to just get through these next 2 weeks/races (Ragnar is next weekend). I woke up at 2:45am (uggggghhhhhh) and picked up my babysitter at 3:15am (she is a ROCK STAR!!). I drove down to Provo Towne Center Mall. Construction was CRAZY and there were a lot of people on the road (all going to the race, I guess). I made a mental note of where I parked and got in line for the bus. It was dark and cold! It was neat to see all the mile markers on the way up. We were dropped off a mile north of the Sundance turnoff. With all the fires and people, it looked like a cult gathering. I was super grateful for the fire...it was cold. I met some super nice people while we waited over an hour for the start. Some 12 year old kid was running his first race. Wowzer! Finally, I took care of business in the potty and dropped my bag off. It was COLD waiting for the gun to go off! I didn't have any goals considering my lack of training and injuries. I just wanted to finish and enjoy. I found the 2:00 pacer and thought I could maybe hang with him. Only until mile 3. The mile 3 hill wasn't as bad as it looked. It was long but very gradual. I took water at every station and jelly beans at mile 8. My toes were rubbing funny in my shoes. I thought they might be bleeding (and they were). But I can't really stop. By mile 11.5, I was starting to loose alittle steam. I was getting to puke zone...I hate puke zone. I just kept saying to myself, "Puke at the finish...Puke at the finish".
It was hard to see the finish line from mile 12. One of the things that bugged was the lack of cheering from the crowds at the finish. I ALWAYS cheer for runners and it was SILENT. Maybe I just need to be a bit more entertaining! At the finish, I bent over and put my hands on my knees ready to puke. I had an old friend come up to me. She had just finished too and was feeling the same way I was. It was a funny conversation. The race was very well organized (except the shirts were ugly). The aide stations were great and well stocked. The finish line food was outstanding. I drank my first chocolate milk after the race (Thanks Smooth and Rachel for the good advice). I don't drink milk, but chugged it down. It actually tasted great. I got a massage...gotta get my money's worth. Got my drop bag and changed into my sandels.....my feet were a bloody mess. Ate lots of Creamies and watched a few of the marathoners come in. I had to leave and relieve the babysitter, so I was sad to miss seeing fellow bloggers come in. Took an ice bath (Thanks again Smooth and Rachel) and am going to get pedicures with my big girls!
A great race...glad I did it!

Team Name: "Don't Punch My Car" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80entLldZOg)
Van 1:
Leg 6: 6.9 miles (58:48:00) - elevation change (-1119 ft)
Leg 18: 8.1 (1:23:00) - elevation change (604 ft)
Leg 30: 3.1 Miles (27:25) - elevation change (-63 ft) Wow...what an experience! We left American Fork about 6:30am to get to Logan. Our scheduled start was 11:00am. We had a couple pull out last minute, so we had 2 replacements. Jason (aka Rocket Man) ran in college, so he dramatically changed all of our exchange times. We had a lot of fun riding up to Logan! We got there in plenty of time, went through our safety seminar, shopped at the Ragnar tent and laughed at all the other team vans (a few favorites were Angry Birds, Jack Bauer for President, Bringing Sweaty Back, and Sofa King Tired). Then I got a phone call that my mom had been admitted to the hospital. Tim and I were trying to find a way to get back to American Fork to get a car (we didn't drive) and if we were even allowed to see her. We finally decided to run our first few legs (which would also bring us closer to home) and see what was going on (it ended up we weren't allowed to visit till Saturday evening, so it was a good distraction). It was fun cheering all the runners in and taking pictures. The Garmin didn't charge the night before (must have slipped off the cradle), so I was a bit distrubed that I wouldn't know how far I had gone. I started my first leg around 3:45pm. I was getting nervous as we drove up Avon Pass...the uneveness of the dirt road, all the dust, etc.... I got my slap bracelet and took off. That first mile was beast! I finished the Avon Pass incline....I really seemed to be effected by the elevation. I was huffing and puffing and it was hot! Once I hit the downhill, I realized how uneven the road was (and rocky). The downhill started to take a toll on my legs and I was really excited to see the "one mile to go". I got a Sombero hat and a free meal to Cafe Rio. But I had to carry the hat a good half mile :( Ben (runner #3) had an old co-worker that lived one street over, so we went to her house to take a shower and eat. Ohhhh....that felt good! I was starting get tired. I started my second leg around 11:45pm. I knew it was going to be a climb and was grateful it would be dark so I couldn't see it. It was cold out, so I wore a long sleeve jacket and compression socks. This was an emotional run for me. I was beyond tired (considering I usually go to bed around 10:00pm), it was COLD, it was my longest and hardest run. I didn't turn on my music which is really out of the ordinary for me. I'm not sure if my senses were off.....It was dark and I couldn't see well, so I was relying more on my hearing. But it was very comforting to hear my own breathing and the stream running along side the road. The van pulled up around mile 3 and gave me some water. It is so comforting to have them support you! I saw them again around mile 5. After that they stopped every mile to make sure I was ok. I was so grateful to see a familar face!
This is where it started to get hard for me. The wind was starting to pick up. The hills were getting bigger and longer. My legs were ON FIRE!!!! I passed a lady in a pink jacket. I told her to come run with run (thinking to myself I won't be able to do this alone). I have no idea who she was, but I was really grateful for her presence. This is where I really had to go past the physical pain and focus on the mental aspect of the run. I kept saying "one foot in front of the other".... "Just run to that tree"...."One more hill". I was so cold and so tired and so in pain. It was the hardest run I've ever done. I could see the lights to the exchange and just wanted to be finished. I took off and found my teammate. I told him, he was the most favorite person I had see all day. Then I found the pink jacket lady and told her thanks. It is amazing the kind of connection you can have with someone without even talking. It took me awhile to find Tim. I was really starting to shake because I was SO cold. We got a hotel room to shower and sleep for a few hours. Best money spent on the whole trip! We left the hotel at 4:30am and I felt like a zombie. My legs were so thrashed that I thought I wouldn't be able to walk much less run another 3.1 miles! I slept a bunch during the morning. I started my last leg around 9:45am. My legs felt like lead. I felt like I was going so fast, but when I came to the "One more mile" sign I looked at my watch and saw 19:18.....so so so slow!! I was so glad to be done! I was so physically and emotional exhausted. We took showers at the middle school. Hooray for showers! We got some real food and then took off to Park City. We had to wait an hour till our final runner came it. She was running WAY TO FAST that last 100 M. Her hubby called out to slow down.....none of us could keep up. So all in all......it was fun but I'm not sure if I want to do it again. My legs are throbbing today (Sunday) and I still feel out-of-whack. (I haven't even proof read this.....too tired)!

TOO HOT, legs hurt, slow. It is one step forward, two steps back! I bought some new Nikes today. I haven't worn Nikes since high school. I hope they fix my stupid shin problem!

| 46:55 minutes AP: 9:32 9:58, 9:44, 9:30, 8:54, 8:37 I felt like I had just fallen asleep when my alarm went off this morning. I am finally done sewing for all my various "things". 7 weeks I've been up all night or up early mornings! I had a "sample show" for my designer, the custom orders from the sample show and my own first craft boutique. I'm heading to the post office to send off the last piece. As much as I love sewing, I'm glad to have a week or so to get my house back in order (and get the laundry done). I'm not sure how my run felt this morning. During certain spots, my shins were bugging, but other places not. I like my new shoes, but know only time will tell. Do shin splints EVER go away? They BUG!

It is quite noisy without music. Birds, running water, and lots of chickens. My legs felt a lot better, but there is still some achiness. My right hip/piraformis is really tight....I need to stretch a lot today.

47:26 AP:9:12 9:47, 9:29, 9:15, 9:06, 8:24 I don't sleep super well when it is hot outside, so in the summer, I always feel like I just fell asleep when my alarm goes off. It was a full moon this morning...so so so beautiful! I felt pretty good this morning. Lower legs still a bit achy. I kept thinking during my run if I was going to have enough time to train for this marathon in October. I feel like I am so far behind in my training. I just need to adjust my expectations of the race I guess! I just got back from the chiropractor and had my hips adjusted. I've had sore hips ever since I've had kids. He also did some ART on my shins. OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!! I just iced them, so here's to hoping they get better!

I kept saying, "It is suppose to be the middle of July", but once we got past the bridge, the wind died down and we were warmed up. I had really low expectations for the run considering my past few weeks of training. I wanted to be at a conversational pace and that is what we did. I love talking with runners...they just get it! I kept seeing all the RHPC signs and was hoping we would see them on the way down the canyon. I was feeling tired around our halfway point. The "doubting thomas" came out and I was hoping I could just finish the run. But heading down that canyon makes it SO much easier! We started seeing all the HOT PINK shirts and cheering for them! It was so fun...next year, I am TOTALLY doing it! I had a lot of fun on this run. My lower legs have really started bruising from ART yesterday. So I am not sure if they are sore from that or from the run OR both! We iced down in the river after....heavenly! What a great run! Thanks running bud!

THEN, when running up Provo canyon, I tried to climb over this bridge to avoid a HUGE puddle. I didn't do it very gracefully and got another HUGE bruise on my quad. I totally look beat up. |

| 1 step forward, 2 steps back. WHY in the world can I not get my act together with running? WHY are my lower legs always achy? When I went to the doctor in May, he said shin splints. But I'm not sure if that is it. I have one spot 3 inches above my ankle (on the inside) that hurts. When I rub my thumb over the bone, it is a bit sore, but doesn't ache like a stress fracture. When I rub the muscles, it BURNS! Could it be tendonitis? What is causing this? I am feeling frustrated and defeated. My run was ok. We have a lot of construction going on by our house, so there are all these creepy construction guys around.

I'm doing more of these to hopefully become a stronger hill runner. You can tell from my splits when the hills end! Need to change that! It was nice and cool this morning. No major lower leg pain. A great run over all. Iced. Need to stretch out this afternoon.

I'm not sure I could have done this distance without these two wonderful gals! Thank you! This was my longest training run this year. I was/am worried on how my lower legs were going to handle it. The verdict is still out! About a mile from the finish, I was starting to get tired. I just wanted to finish, so I took off because I was tired of running :) Plus I needed to get home to get my yard work done, so I could take my kids to the pool, so I could host a BBQ in the afternoon. 56:55 My Garmin wouldn't turn on this morning...that can be a scary moment for a runner! But I was running my 6 mile loop (so I knew my distance) so I just put on my old Timex and headed out. There is something wonderful about running before the sun comes up. It is so quiet (except for the birds and chickens) and everything is still. I love it! But I felt big and clunkly today. I had a hard time finding my stride and really struggled up the 1.5 mile hill. But the workout is done and the miles are logged! Taking my kids to the movies and then to the park for a picnic. I need to wear them out so they maybe go to bed early.

All my favorite running buddies were all occupied this Saturday morning. So I decided to run with the Soujourners Running Club (Runner's Corner's club). We met at 6:30am at the mouth of Provo Canyon and were going to carpool up to Solider Hollow and run down the canyon. We didn't start running until 7:30am....frustrating! We ran above the Heber Creeper railroad tracks on a dirt road. It was SUPER FREAKIN' hilly. It reminded me of my 2nd leg of Ragnar....climbing up and up and up. You can tell from my mile splits the major hills. My legs were starting to scream at me! I was so grateful for those other runners - there is NO way I could have made it up those hills without them.
We made it to the dam and had water/gatoraide. But we were less than halfway and my legs were spent. We continued on through some private property and couldn't talk. On previous run, they had gotten in trouble for being there. GREAT - trespassing! Then we hopped on the main road.
We made it to Vivian Park and I drank as much water as a camel! But I was only at 13 miles. I got a ride from Hawk and Cheryl to the mouth of the canyon. Though my legs were on fire, I really wanted to get in 15. So I dropped my water belt at my car and headed up to the water fountain. When I finished, I soaked in the river and almost lost my flip flop. Both of my lower legs ache and are so sore. I had two thoughts during my run: 1. It can't get harder than this. 2. This may be my last run EVER - for sure, I've done something to my muscles/legs/tendons! I'm super tired and sore and hope I can still run on Monday morning! This was my longest run EVER!

I've decided I REALLY stink at trail running. First because I shuffle on the roads, but am forced to lift my legs higher when I'm on trails because of rocks/roots/etc. Plus, I think the elevation plays a part when I'm up on a trail UP the mountain vs running at the base of the mountain. I'm glad I did it...makes me stronger. But the first mile was quite the climb. It was a beautiful sunrise. The views over the valley were incredible. My legs are tired!

Luckily, I only had 3 miles on the schedule (too lazy to lift). I ran a lot faster than I normally do - not sure if it was because I had sleep and I wasn't in "coma" state?! I ate and got ready. I got to the trail about 5:15am to run 5 miles before the group run of 12 miles. It was SO SO SO dark and spooky on that trail. I didn't turn my music on until on my way back. I saw 3 beautiful deer. They slowly crept onto the road. I finished the run, got a big drink and sat in my car for a few minutes until the group showed up. Oh...those few minutes in the car sure made me tired! There was a large group of gals this morning...RAD, Smooth, Bec, Kathie, Wendy, Carolyn, Karen. It is so wonderful to run with company! One of the major "things" I learned this morning on the run was I need to run more in the heat. Usually, I'm done running just as the sun is coming up. I felt so over heated today. St George Marathon starts at 6:00ish and the majority of the run is done in the sun. I need to practice more. I felt good this morning. My lower legs were a bit sore. But my breathing felt controlled and I was able to pick it up a bit on the last few miles (and didn't feel like I was going to die!!). I was surprised to see that my AP was a 9:04 - that is way faster than normal. I'm not sure if that is good or bad.
On the way home, I stopped at the gas station to buy a bag of ice. I had a good ice bath and foam rolled. I also got an hour nap! My lower legs are definitely sore this afternoon. More icing and Advil tonight.

Hubby was out of town, so I had a babysitter come at 6:00am (I though my standard 5am might be a tad early for a sitter). I've been doing my standard 6 mile loop backwards lately and I really like it....it is now the new forward. But it has a 1.5 mile LONG hill. Though it is really hard, I'm hoping it will make me stronger (because it is really fun to run down)! I saw a lot more runners out this morning. It was fun to try to catch them....maybe that is why I ran so much faster today than normal. After I got through with the hill, I decided to push the pace until I got home....a small tempo run to get my legs warmed up for Hobble. It got harder and harder that last mile, but I continued with the negative splits. I'm worried about how my legs are going to act tonight. They are sore. I'm getting ART done on them this afternoon. Hopefully that will relieve some of the tightness. If I didn't love running so much, I would have quit this nonsense a long time ago. The things we put up with to fuel our passions.

Time:1:45:20
AP: 8:08 8:03, 7:54, 7:56, 7:39, 7:50, 7:48, 8:12, 8:18, 8:00, 8:34, 8:26, 8:30, 8:05 I had really mixed feelings going into this race. My legs felt horrible all week (crazy spasms), so my once "race it" planned turned into "run it". I got up at 4:20am and had an upset stomach. Maybe it was the Costa Vida nachos I had for dinner last night or maybe it was nerves (or both). I had a banana and ate an apple on the way to the start. I actually found a really great parking spot among the gazillion cars. The bus line was seriously long. I found out later that they ordered 24 buses and only 15 buses showed up. So I waited in the bus line for 30-40 minutes. Ugh..... I saw a few people I knew which is always fun. On the way up the canyon, I sat next to the NICEST lady. We were talking about "a race" versus "an event". Utah Valley half marathon/marathon was "an event" (they had enough buses, nice swag bags, fires at the start, lots of fully stocked aide stations, massages at the finish and great stuff at the finish). Hobble Creek Half is just "a race" to make money - no frills. Once I got to the top, I made a quick Honey Bucket visit. I saw Lily, Scott, Kathie, Callie, Josse, Melody, rwardle and other friendly faces. You start to see lots of the same people in the running world. The race started 30 minutes late. Mile 1 (8:03): Lots of dodging people and feeling good. Mile 2 (7:54): I ran with a gal with a pink skirt. I love picking out people to hang with during a race. Mile markers were definitely off - they were short.
Mile 3 (7:56): Starting to get a bit nervous that I might be going to fast and will blow up later. But trying to take advantage of the downhill while I can. Mile 4, 5, 6 (7:39, 7:50, 7:48): I grabbed a cup of water at the aide station, but just spit it out. My stomach was still feeling funny and I didn't want to throw up so early in the race. I passed pink skirt girl and picked up purple shirt girl. She was speedy fast. Really starting to think I might blow up, but wanted to hang on until mile 10...then I can blowup and throw up. Mile 7, 8, 9 (8:12, 8:18, 8:00): I stopped at the aide station at mile 8 (I think it was 8) and walked through it. I wanted to take some water slowly, so I wouldn't get sick. Lost purple shirt gal. I was starting to get tired, but just wanted to hang on until mile 10. There was a lot more hills - not big ones, but my legs were starting to get tired and they felt big. Mile 10, 11, 12, 13 (8:34, 8:26, 8:30, 8:05): Definitely hit puke zone. I kept saying to myself, "run 3 more minutes, then puke". I walked through another aide station, hoping that the vomit feeling would go away. I finally looked at my overall time on my watch (I occasionally looked at my split pace, but never the overall time). So at mile 10 it said 1:18:00...so I figured 1:45:00 might be a reality.
I was just trying to hang and finish. I could start to hear the crowds at the finish. I started looking for my family....seeing your family=almost finish. My hubby and kids, my in-laws and my brother/sister in-law. I was nervous about them being there. I am no rock star runner and didn't want to have a cruddy race and have them witness it. BUT I was having a good race and were definitely glad to see their faces. The finish line never seemed to come. We kept going and going and going around this park. As soon as I crossed the finish, I thought for sure I was going to puke. So I stood there for a long time. I got my shirt/flower/water and went to find my kids. They were so excited and I was excited to see them. My stomach still felt really yucky.
We hung out for awhile. Tim took the kids to Mcdonalds for breakfast and I headed home for a shower and nap. My stomach is still really sick. But at least my run is done for the day.
SO overall, I am super pleased with my time. I ran UV Half in a 1:55:00, so I was thinking I could maybe do it again. When I looked at my watch at mile 10, I was super surprised! My PR for the year!
Hooray for a great day and SUPER great nap! I will be totally useless the rest of the day!

I wanted to go nice and easy....it was definitely SLOW! My legs were sore from lifting yesterday (or maybe from the massage or from the race). So glad that long mid-week run is over. I'm so dog tired though. But I did send 3/4 of my kids off to school today....what I am going to do!

It was extra dark this morning and I seemed extra cautious. I ran on a paved trail and I had to slow way down to find my way through it. Plus, I was just slow and tired.
Funny, stupid story of the day: I had 2 people pass me on the roads this morning. One came up from behind (on the other side of the road) and about gave me a hear attack. The other one, was on the same side of the road, I was running south and she was running north. It was so dark that I didn't see her until she was right next to me. I gave a little scream and then a quick sorry. I'm used to running solo in the dark morning hours! I getting a nap today no matter what! AND tomorrow is a rest day....hooray! |

I kept thinking, "there is no way I'm going to be able to run 26.2 miles". My legs aren't sore from the race or lifting anymore. Hooray! Tendonitis in lower right leg is bugging alittle. Maybe because of my day off...who knows! Big 20 miler tomorrow. I hope I don't die!

First, I am finally acknowledging that I am doing a
marathon.
For the longest time, I’ve been telling myself (and others)
that I “have a marathon race number” and we’ll see how my legs hold up – not
really committing. I’ve been
nervous about getting injured, just not being able to handle the
training, and worried that I just won't be fast enough.
I’ve been training for my marathon, but I think I am to the
point that I can admit
I. Am. Running.
A. Marathon.
St George Marathon on October 1. My very first 26.2 miles. I’ve been to lots of marathons and can “kinda talk the
marathon lingo”. But in 5 shorts
weeks, I will be wearing that “finishers” t-shirt and sporting the medal.
Today marked my FIRST 20-miler training run for my upcoming
marathon.
I had been thinking about it a lot. I had been reading up on tips for long runs. My dear running bud hunted me down last
night at our Ward Rodeo Hoedown to bring me a cookie “for good luck on you first 20
miler”. She totally understood my
nervousness and I was so grateful for her sweet gesture! Plus the cookie was divine!
I’ve run 17 miles and many short miles, but this is the
farthest I’ve been run. There were
crazy logistics to running this morning.
We were having our Ward Rodeo, so I needed to be finished by
7:00am. AND my running pals ran a
marathon last weekend, so they needed to run shorter today.
So at 3:20am I rolled out of bed, changed into my running
clothes and headed out for 8 miles before I caught up with my group. It was already very warm, humid, and
very dark. I charged up 4 miles,
stopped and watered/gu’ed up and charged back 4 miles.
My dear running friends met me at 5:00am. We headed out for 12 more miles. Running with friends is absolutely
essential when training for a marathon.
I’ve gotten up at crazy hours and driven to crazy places just to be with
a pal. It is that important!
Immediately after we started, I started to feel pukie. Ugh….last weekends race is still near
and dear and I didn’t want 12 miles of the pukes. I could tell I was starting to slow down. Self doubt and weakness crept in. “There is NO way I am going to be able
to run 20 miles much less a marathon”.
This is the part, where my dear friends taught me about kindness. While I struggled for a few miles (and when
I say struggled…well …..it was ugly), my dear friends showed me endless
encouragement.
I think while running poorly, sometimes we are stripped of
our pride and any “fronts/barriers” we put up. We become raw and all insecurities shine through. The great thing is that “true” running
friends don’t care. They want to
help and carry you through your rough patch. I will forever be grateful for my pals “carrying” me through
a few bad miles (and all the other miles too).
During this time, I realized AGAIN how much I have to learn
about running. My dear friends
taught me gently and kindly about hydration, fueling, the importance of rest
days and that I’m not wonder woman!
My mile 14, I was feeling much better and started running at
a normal speed. We were getting
short on time and I needed to get home to help with Rodeo stuff. But when we finished we would still be
short on miles. We decided to run
the Ward Rodeo 5k for the final 3 miles. We made it back to my house, jumped in
the car and drove to the start.
We got there just in time. It was a great distraction to run with 30 other
runners. I wasn’t running at
rocket speed, but I felt good and had controlled breathing. I have no idea what my time was (and I
don’t really care)!
I hugged my dear friends goodbye knowing they will never
understand HOW much I appreciate them and just being there today. (I had lots of chocolate milk, cut up oranges, and bananas and I didn't even get to share them!!!!)
The Rodeo had a kids 1K run. So I joined ran with Carter and Abby. Carter took off with his buddies. I finally caught up with Abby (I was
still running slow!!). We held
hands and ran through the finish.
It was wonderful to be with my girl!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart dear running buds for helping me through my first 20 miler!!!!

But I've invested TOO much time to throw SGM out the window! Doc thinks the top of my foot is tendonitis (he said I would have carnage after a 20 miler!!!) and PF on my heel. He gave me a steriod to help with both. Stretches and ice. Plus I got a Strassburg sock today. My run today felt ok. I was huffing and puffing and it was HOT! I spent a lot of extra time stretching, foam rolling and icing. JUST HANG ON!

I LOVE the cooler-fallish weather. I finally felt like my legs could move. There is hope! It was such a fun and chatty run! Those gals are so great! Answering all my dumb questions and chatting runner talk! So so so fun! But I am tired today. No "after run" nap! My garden has been neglected for 2 weeks. So I picked corn, oodles of green beans, lots of tomatoes, lots of raspberries and green peppers. Plus I pulled WAY too many weeds! Then we went to Costco...it is always chaos there! Came home and canned 15 bottles of spaghetti sauce, cut up the 3 packages of strawberries and put them into baggies (with pineapple and blueberries). I freeze for our morning smoothie fix. I cut up all the green beans for tomorrow night's dinner. Then put away all the other Costco crud. My feet hurt. Off to bed! Thanks ladies for the great morning!

The best part....not starting the run until 6:15am (verses starting at 5:00am) - hooray for sleeping in! Plus, it was cool out this morning! Fall is coming!
We ran the trail route today. I did part of this route during my 20 miler. The middle 3 miles have been hard for me the last few times I've done it. I'm not sure why...maybe I need to run it more to get better at it. I planned to only run 8 miles, but it turned out alittle longer. I felt really good and my legs felt fresh. Except for the last .2 miles where I about had a potty accident. Bleh....those are never fun moments! Lots of foam rolling this morning. I have extra time to stretch and roll which is so nice.

The curb dips way down, so you are always lopsided. It bugs. Lower leg tendons still very sore. But I'm not sure why. I didn't fall back to sleep this morning, so I was excited to take a nap this afternoon. Just as I put my head on my pillow, the school called. Daughter has a tummy ache. Hmmm.....funny because when we got home, she wanted to play with her friends and have a treat. Unfortunately, at our house when you are sick, you stay on the couch and go to bed at 7:00pm. I hope she learned. Designated rest day tomorrow before the big 20 on Saturday!

First and foremost, I am SO SO SO grateful for such good running friends. There is NO way I could have done this alone! I went to bed at 9:00pm Friday night and slept terrific! Karen picked me up at 5:30am and we headed down to Spanish Fork. We needed to do 20 miles, so we decided to run a 4 mile warm up - run the Spanish Fork Half Marathon - then a 3 mile cool down. As we headed out for the 4 miles, we saw Rachel picking up her packet. It is always so great to see friends at races! Just as we finished our warm up, we heard the race start count-down. I grabbed my jelly beans from Karen's car, but forgot my Ipod. Bleh..... The first few miles, I felt good. I stopped at the water stop and jelly-beaned up. I was planning on there being a water station on mile 6, but there was NOTHING! The sun was starting to beat down and I was starting to get dizzy. I was running with Terry (who by the way tells great stories! I told him, we need to chat during a non-hard run...I really do talk. I'm just not very good at it during a long run). I told him to go ahead. I walked for a minute and the light-headedness went away. Finally at mile 9, there was a water station. But I drank too much too fast and it started sloshing around in my stomach. I took some more jelly beans. I feel like I started to tank at this point in the run (mile 13 of 20). I had to walk some during the race and never felt really hydrated. Walking is hard on the ego! The out and backs (there were 2 of them) were hard mentally for me. Good practice I guess. There was another water station at mile 11/12, but they didn't have any cups. REALLY! So I knelt down and tried to get some in my mouth. Warm well water is AWESOME! Around mile 12.5, I saw Rachel running toward me. I can't tell you HOW wonderful it was to see that gal. I couldn't talk to her (too tired and thirsty), but was so grateful to have her at my side. There were 3 gals in front of us. Rachel told me to sprint to the finish and beat them. I politely (I hope it was politely) told her to bug off. My legs were done! She kept on and told me to catch them. So I took off the last 400 meters and caught them. Thanks for being there Rachel! I probably drank a gallon of gatoraide after the race and then felt sick. I was chaffing badly and found some vaseline. Karen, Rachel and I headed out for 3 more miles. They asked which way I wanted to go and I told them I was in no condition for making decisions :) I just followed. It was slow and I was feeling defeated for running so poorly. I was hoping this long run would have gone more smoothly than the last 20 miler. I felt like I walked too much and didn't hydrate properly. My expectations for SGM have definitely decreased! If I do another marathon, I think I need to add more 15, 17, and 18 milers. I do a lot of 12-13 milers, but they aren't enough. Live and learn! I had a massage this afternoon. The gal really worked my lower legs...so they are a bit sore. Hopefully a good sore. I just hope I can finish SGM.

Time:47:15 AP: 8:58 10:26, 9:20, 8:52, 8:24, 8:06, 2:05 That darn hill by my house throws off my AP every day. Oh well..... So I've decided I'm not going to get "freaked out" until exactly 1 week after my 20 milers. I've had all sorts of weird aches and pains in my lower legs. I know this is normal, but it also puts me in a case of the worries! I wore a long sleeved shirt this morning thinking it was going to be cold. But by the time I got up my hill, I was already sweating like a pig. After 2 miles, I couldn't stand it any more. Now, I'm not usually one to just run in a sports bra....nope not after having 4 kids. But I was so hot and sweaty this morning, I decided to take off the long sleeved shirt and just run with my sports bra and my reflective vest. It was still very dark, so I thought no one will notice. I looked like a total dork. I thought I was home free, until I got to my street. Our newly called counselor (my neighbor) in the bishopric pulled up right behind me. He rolled down his window and asked how many miles I'd done this morning. I stuck my hands by my sides trying to hide my flashing white skin. I quickly uttered 5 miles and jogged home. I sure hope he didn't notice. It was a good run.

My calves were a bit achy to start, but eventually warmed up. But my hip is still sore. I stretched, foamed rolled and did a few strengthening exercises last night. I did the same this morning. I'm not going to run tomorrow, but will on Friday. I will give my hip a week or so to see how it does..then maybe go to the doctor.

My hip (and piraformis) has really been bothering this week - more so than usual. I've been foam rolling/deep stretching 3xday. So being a wussy that I am, I went to the doctor. I have hip bursitis and he gave me a cortisone shot in the hip and in the bum (for the piraformis). I really need to keep stretching and do LOTS more weight lifting. I need to get my act together!

I was a half a mile from my house (right in the middle of all the road construction) and totally tripped and fell. It was 10.0 on the ugly scale! Granted it was pitch dark and the road is totally uneven and full of gravel and construction stuff - but it was ugly! I'm glad there was no cars to run over me. I totally ripped a hole in my favorite 3/4 length tights and scrapped up my hands, knee and hip bad. My knee is still very tender. Honestly, I am a walking tornado! All I want to do is run...no injuries, no trips...just run!

My knee is super bruised and tender to the touch, but I was able to run on it. Same with my hand and hip. Felt good to go farther this morning. I did lunges for 2 houses on the way out and way back. Foam rolling, hip exercises and stretching.

I ran the same route as yesterday, but ran up the hill instead of down the hill and I ran it faster today. Interesting. I felt really great on my run today. I'm not sure "how" I am suppose to get back into training. Do I do 10% increase - or just go back to what my mileage was? 2 houses of lunges on the way out and the way back. Foam rolled and hip exercises. Rest day tomorrow!

I stopped around mile 2 because the top of my foot was bothering me. I took off my shoe and rubbed it for a minutes and then finished the run. It ached during the day. Not sure what I should do, but am frustrated.

We went camping last night and I didn't get out on the road until 11:00am. And it was WARM! Hooray for the drinking fountains still being turned on at Art Dye. I ran much faster than I usually do. I think because it was light out and I wasn't dog tired!
My legs felt heavy and my right foot was still bugging - 4/5 metatarsal area. It felt ok during the run, but after the run it really started to ache. Maybe too much too soon. Ugh....
I think I will take the next few days off. I am not training for anything special and would rather rest now, then have an injury later. Actually, I would like to have a personal medical staff to tell me what to do.

| I've walked way too many miles through Disneyland this past week...but it has been off-set by the number of cokes and creamcheese filled pretzels. Mmmmmm.... My foot felt better as the week went on, so I thought I would run 3 miles with my SIL. It was a very slow pace, but SUPER SUPER SUPER hilly. I could feel my foot start to ache some. But we will see how it feels by the end of the week. We'll see!

Sore from yesterdays lifting and planking. I think those planks will bring me to an early grave. That or I'm just a wimp. I think it is the later.....
I'm feeling a big discouraged that I'm not running more miles. Heck I just ran a marathon 4 weeks ago. But my body seems to be rebelling.... maybe I just needed more recovery time and did too much too soon. My right foot feels ok with the 3 mile runs, so I may try to go a bit farther on Wednesday or Thursday. BUT I need to lift and get stronger. It HAS to be a priority. But I only have so much time in the morning to run and lift and something has to give. It is only October and I still have awhile till my next real race (the turkey trot doesn't count). But subconsciously it stresses me out.

I didn't like it - it felt like I wasted half of my morning and I didn't get anything else done. BUT I did get to sleep in which was heavenly! Before run: high knees and butt kicks The first 2 miles, I felt like I was huffing and puffing. I felt horrible! But then immediately I warmed up and all was right in the running world again. The weather was so wonderful - cold, sunny and leaves crunching under my feet. I got new shoes...they felt like butter! Right foot felt ok...we'll just wait and see After run: just a few high knees

Hubby and I are in Moab for our annual Slick Rock ride. We came down with two other couples. I got up before our ride to get a run in. My 2.5 mile run out was the longest, slowest, windiest run EVER! I felt like I was running in place. My legs felt heavy, I was breathing heavy and I felt like crap. Then I turned around to head back and realized I was running up a long gradual hill. Another reason, I was so slow. But now I was running down the hill and had a tail wind. Finally, I was able to pick up speed. My right quad has been bugging me. Same with my PF. Something to keep an eye on. Stupid!
The weather was absolutely gorgeous to ride the beautiful trail this morning. I only had one minor crash (unlike the dude who broke his color bone). The other gals and I didn't ride the entire trail like the guys. We came back to eat, shower, take a nap and get pedicures (way better than riding for 6 hours). Hope I can get a run in before the snow storm blows in tomorrow.

| I decided I'm an emotional basket-case when it comes to running (or lack of running). It is the only thing in my life that I get really grumpy over (when I can't run). But I've been doing a lot of yoga over the past 3-4 days. THAT is the ticket! I can't believe how inflexible I am. No wonder I am getting injured all the time (I'm sure there are other reasons too)....my muscles are so stiff. I really felt much better today and for that I am GRATEFUL!

| I got to the gym early to make sure I could get a stair climber. Hooray...I was able to get one. The stair climber doesn't seem to irritate my thigh as much as running. But I feel like I am getting a good cardio workout (personally, I think it is just as hard as running) and I am still getting impact on the legs. My 5 miles on the stair climber were hard today versus yesterday's "it felt great" workout. My breathing was labored and the miles seemed to drag by. I was sweating so much that I was starting to get embarrassed. GROSS!!!! I wanted to try some burpees today....HOLY HARDNESS!!! I could only do 7 for each set. I was probably doing them wrong and looked like a total dork. 3x 7 burpess 45/45 side planks 10 butterfly arms 10 bench press 20 tri dips on workout bench 15 minutes of stretching and foam rolling 1 hour nap...awesome My son has been bugging me for months about running the turkey trot. I told him we had to wait and see what the weather was going to be like (last year it was 8 degrees). We signed him up last week for the 1/2 mile race. I took him to the HS track today and we ran 2 laps. I told him to go slow for the first lap and then to turn on the rockets for the 2nd. He did great! It is amazing to watch your child do a sport you REALLY love. I let him use my ipod...he said it made him run faster!

3 miles on the stair climber - thigh felt awesome. No tightness or pain 2.55 miles on the TM - thigh definitely tightened up and there was slight pain. But this pain (not the tightness...it stayed) went away after the first .5 mile. I started at 6.2 and finished at 8.0. Breathing was very controlled and I could have definitely gone longer.
I really wanted to run longer, but I also knew I HAD to stretch. So less miles - more stretch. When I start doing my higher miles, it is going to be tricky to lift and do miles. I may have to start to get up in the 4:00am hour. But any get up time in the 4:XX is a hard mental barrier for me. 15 minutes of stretching. Maybe tonight I can get in some planks, push up, sit ups, wall sits or yoga. OR I could sit on the couch and be lazy with hubby. It will be a hard toss up :)

AP: 8:40 My "plan" this year for the Turkey Trot was to run with my hubby, sister-in-law and brother in law. I just wanted to have fun and not race it. This type of mentality going into a race is AWESOME!
Mile 1: 9:12 Nice and easy start (even though I was breathing hard)
Mile 2: 8:53 Still having fun rocking out to some old school Guns and Roses!
Mile 3: 8:39 Wish there was a water stop! (No offense to Sojourner's Races....but they are cheaply put together and old school).
Mile 4: 7:37 Decided to kick it into the finish. I got into puke mode...glad it was only for the last mile.
My son has been bugging me for weeks about running the turkey trot. We talked a lot about not going out to fast - then kick it at the end.

Carter took off in a fast sprint trying to keep up with the first boys. I knew we were in trouble from the start (especially racing Sasha's son!!!). After the turnaround, I saw him start to walk and cry. I started to walk up toward him (knowing that he had totally burned out) - I told him he needed to jog/run to the finish and not to quit. I have this internal conflict of pushing my son too hard and teaching him that we don't quit when things are hard. It is a fine line.
I ate two donuts on the way home...I totally negated the race!

So our fire alarms went off from 10pm to 4am every 30 minutes. Since they have a CO2 alarm in them, we call the fire department and ask what we should do to get them to stop. Right then, they went off again. SO AFFD sent out a fire car, ambulance, and fire truck. It was quite the scene. Luckily, no CO2 in the house...just defaultly alarms. When we were allowed to come back in the house, my alarm clock was going off. I promptly turned it off and crawled back into bed. So I got on the pulley machine today and did: 3x 10 pulling the handle with my foot in each direction (side to side and front and back). So a total of 4 exercises. Adductor, Abductor, Hip Flexor and Glutes. Then I did a one-legged squat (3x10). Those babies are HARD!!! I could only go down a few inches. I need to work on them a lot! 3 miles on the TM...nice and slow. Lots of foam rolling and stretching. I think I bruised up my leg more after today's rolling session.

| 3 x 10 abductor on the pulley machine 10 adductor on the pulley machine 10 hip flexor on the pulley machine 10 glutes on the pulley machine 10 (on each leg) one legged squat (still not easy) 3 miles on the stair climber lots of foam rolling and stretching So my right hip and knee are on FIRE. I'm not sure if it is sore from the weights today or if I've done something to it. I get really irritated when I am trying to PREVENT injury by lifting and am getting injured in the process. Ughhhh..... Rest week is over....sigh....long run tomorrow...I got my hotel in SG for the SG Half. I hope I can run 13 miles (I remember when that didn't seem that far).

My first 5 mile run seem to take forever....isn't that always the case though! Stopped, got a drink, ate a few jelly beans and started back up. I had controlled breathing over the whole run. My right hip started to really ache. The same kinda ache that happened during SGM. Still not sure if it is from the hip exercises I've been doing or I really did something to injure it. Blech..... I stretched really good after and foam rolled. Ice bath when I got home....ice baths are cold in the summer, but FREEZING in the winter!
PM: Stretched and foam rolled again.

My workout totally got messed up this morning. A. I slept in....that is never good. I always feel guilty leaving my kids. B. I had to drop off all the samples for the 400 skirts. She called at 7:50am and needed me in Orem by 8:30am. I was still in my jammies being lazy in bed. But she was 20 minutes late. So I didn't get to the gym till after 9:00am. WAY too many people for my liking! I decided it is time to put on my big girl running shoes and do some speed work. I asked RAD about all her speed work. So I decided to do the 1 min hard/1 min easy. I needed 4 miles today, so I did a 1 mile w/u and 1mile c/d and 2 miles of hard/easy. I did my hards at 9.5mph and my easys at 6.3mph. It was definitely hard. I started when the timer on the the TM said 10 minutes and did the speed until I got a little over 3 miles. My last hard I did at 9.8mph in honor of RAD since she can't run (I about barfed too :) ). 33:18
Lots of stretching and foam rolling. More sewing today.....

I woke up at 5:00am and started freaking out that I wasn't going to get all my 400 dresses sewed in time. I couldn't fall back to sleep. So at 6:00am, I got up and went to the gym. I almost hit my neighbors Christmas tree because it was blowing all over the cul-de-sac. I struggled the first few miles....had a hard time getting into a groove and realizing HOW many miles I had left. Ughhhh.... I broke up the run into a 6 mile run - water/gu chomps - 5 mile run. My hip started hurting around mile 8/9. When I'm done sewing all this madness, I'm going to the chiropractor and maybe to get another cortisone shot.
