Favorite Running Quotes:
1.
"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.
Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.
A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."
~Nike Poster
2. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
You’ve no doubt heard this. And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape. You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.
But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal. If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.
You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time. And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

| I texted Kellie late last night to see what she was running today. She was doing her long run. So I decided to join her. I was kinda dreading going to the gym, but was excited to have the company. Since the TM shuts off after 60 minutes, I broke the run up into 2x6 mile runs. I read on my iPad for the first few miles. Then Kellie came and we talked for awhile. Then I read some more.....chatted...read. The run went by really fast=success! My foot felt good, but it was definitely tired by the end of the run. I'm really tired now and I'm ready for my kids to go back to school. TT: 56:21 AP: 9:23 TT: 54:25 AP: 9:04 |

I struggled the first 6 miles.....had a hard time finding my mojo. Physically, I was fine...maybe bored? I had the ceiling fan going, my big box fan propped up on a ladder and the window open. It was cold downstairs this morning. Just the way I like it! I took my GU at mile 7 and my spirits started to lift. I watched Biggest Loser and was able to pick up my speed. THEN at mile 10.5, the TM stopped. And it didn't even show my time. I was SO ticked! I restarted it and finished my last 2.5 miles. After my run, I did a little internet research on Proform TM.....they shut off after 100 minutes. So I was able to figure out my overall time. Not knowing would have driven nutso...ADD anyone! I did a quick strech and foam roll. I wore my compression sleeves all day and iced in the morning. Verdict is still out on how everything feels. One week from today is the SGHM. Last year was a horrific race. I was so out of shape and trying to come back from my stress fracture. Just out of curiosity, I looked at my mileage from 2 years ago (which was a great year for me). I calculated 12 weeks out. 2012 average weekly mileage: 19.5 2014 average weekly mileage: 33.42 Difference: 13.92 miles per week I've been thinking about goals for the race (or to just run and have fun). I think I can run faster than 2012(1:55:00), but I don't know how much faster. This race is the first benchmark of the year. My goals for 2014 are: 1. No injuries 2. Qualify for Boston - which is a 3:40 or 8:23mm I would like to see a 1:50 (8:23mm) for the next weekend. I'm not sure if this is unrealistic, but I'm going try. After next week, I will have a better picture if where I am at. My 2014 motto: conquering demons....chasing dream |

| I wrote this little diddy for my family blog....it will work for my race report:
Five years ago, I decided to run my first marathon. With that marathon came the desire to join the elite running crowd who qualify for the Boston Marathon. Disappointment after disappointment and injury after injury, that goal was set aside.
Time after time.
After time.
I decided that my running game plan was not working. I was reminded of the definition of insanity, "doing the same thing time after time and expecting different results". So in May 2013 after another poor race, I decided to change my whole paradigm of running.
I read several articles and books and thought I would implement their suggestions. I had nothing to lose. It couldn't get any worse.
First, I stopped racing and recovered from every injury I had. Second, I started strength training. Then I started to run. I cut my miles way back and ran slow. Every fourth week, I reduced my miles even more and called it a rest week.
After a few weeks, if everything felt good and there was no lingering injury, I increased my mileage a little. More weight lifting. More stretching. Another rest week. No injuries - a few more miles.
My training friends were qualifying for Boston left and right, but I was just running. Though my heart said "I should have raced with them and I would have qualified too".......my head, told me I made the right decision. The right decision to train slow and smart...to not rush through another training cycle and get another injury. But to take as much time as my body needs to adjust to the incessant pounding. To get stronger.
I told myself I wanted to train this "right" way for years and years, but always after the next race. Which turned into the next race...then the next next next race. I finally stopped the unsuccessful cycle.
The St George Half Marathon was my first race of the 2014 season. I'm finally putting my new training regime to the test. I've been working on it for 7.5 months. I've run more miles than I've ever run in my life.
My Boston qualifying time is a 3:40 or an 8:23 mile. I really wanted to be able to run an 8:23 mile (or a 1:50) for the race today. I knew it would give me the mental boost that I could run that fast. But also, that I would have enough time to get more speed and endurance to be ready to run that pace for 26.2 miles in May.
|
On my way to St George |
I had a good friend who was the 1:50 pacer and another friend who was the 1:45 pacer this morning. I knew both ladies had plenty of race experience and had enough guts to chew me out if I started to slack.
The gun went off and it was time to hit the road "JACK". I stayed with the 1:50 pacer until mile 4.5. I was extremely hesitant to pull away so early in the race but thought I could maybe catch the 1:45 pacer. But tried to keep my pace and breathing consistent.
I saw our good friends, the MacDonald family, at mile 5 and was thrilled to have cheering squad out there for me. I continued to climb and climb and climb through the streets of Bluffdale. My legs started to feel heavy and my gut started to hurt.
|
My good friends, the MacDonald family, took this picture at mile 5. |
After conquering the final hill at mile 7 (there was an ambulance waiting at the top....that is how big of a hill it was), I decided I needed to find my TRUE GRIT. It does not matter how well I start the race. But it does matter how I finish. How far can I dig into my reserve of motivational thoughts, songs, movies....how can I overcome the demons screaming on my shoulder that I am not ready to do this.....how badly do I REALLY want this. DESIRE is a force to be reckoned with.
I took my last drink at the mile 11 aide station and knew I only had 16-17 minutes of running left. I would look at other runner's shorts and try to catch them. "Catch the purple shorts" "Catch the black shorts". One by one they became roadkill.
But I was in puke zone. And I had to pee. I could only hold so many bodily functions in at once. My legs were tired. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS". I'm gonna pee my pants. Here come the pukes....swallow. "YOU STILL HAVE ONE MILE TO GO...IT'S TOO FAR TO HANG ON". My feet hurt. Catch the blue shorts. Ohhhhh....I have to pee so bad. My arms feel like bricks.
Just when I thought I couldn't hang on for another second, I see the finish line. Then comes the overwhelming emotions of the balloon arch, the fuzziness of the spectator faces, fist pumps, cow bells, and the clock that silently screams 1:46:47 (8:09 mile).
4 minutes faster than my goal.
9 minute course PR.
The pukes go away, the rocks on the asphalt start to focus, a stranger puts a medal around my neck. and the flood of emotions start pumping through all the veins in my body. I wish I could bottle it up and sell it as Walter White sells his goodness. It would be more powerful than his blue meth.
|
These amazing ladies tell me I can do it and today I believe them. Love you LPL's! |
I don't know how the rest of my season is going to turn out. It may all be for naught and come crashing down. I don't know.
I hope to recover smart and continue with my marathon training. I need to work on my mental toughness the most. I need to regularly practice digging into that cave of pain. To get comfortable there. To learn that it can only hurt to a certain point. And I WILL live through it. Hopefully, that will get me my blue jacket.

I guess that happens when you order shoes on-line. Good run...did a few pick ups starting at mile 5. My son had a basketball game, but all the girls were still asleep. I hired a nutritionist to create a few meal plans for me. She asked me about my training and said I need to eat about 2000 calories/day. She is all about real, whole foods. I eat 7 small meals/day. I really like her whole philosophy and the food is good and I'm never hungry....BUT, I've hardly lost any weight (like 2 lbs in 3 weeks). I'm all for wanting to do the right thing by eating right, but there needs to be some sort of reward (like a smaller number on the scale)!!! Is 2000 calories/day too much? |

| TT: 1:50:00 AP: 8:50 My running plans that I carefully constructed earlier in the week didn't pan out. I knew that would happen and was bummed I didn't do the run yesterday. Oh well!! With my new meal plans, I am allowed one cheat meal per week. I can have whatever I want! I've been looking forward to it all week....it's been my motivation to keep on track. We went to Texas Roadhouse and I had their steak salad. It was super yummy, but it made me super sick. My body couldn't handle that amount of food and it revolted! So when I got up, my stomach was still very sour. I went back to bed for 30 minutes in hopes that it would settle. It did..so I went downstairs. My run was actually really good. I'm getting better at TM running and don't totally loathe it now :). As per Josse's speed work advice, I through in a few MP miles at the end (miles 7-10 and 12-13-8:23 or faster). They actually felt really good and I was surprised I could hold them. I took a quick potty break and took a GU at mile 6.5. I reset the TM at mile 10. Shortly thereafter, I blew a fuse and the TM came to a screeching halt. Yikes....when you are not expecting that, it can be a bit unnerving. While hubby fixed it for me, I took another potty break (stupid salad). I finished the last 2 miles sub MP. I wore compression sleeves which I haven't done in awhile. I think they totally helped today. Yeah! Hooray for a great run. Plus my son was a rock star at his basketball game! |

| TT: 1:33:16 AP: 9:19 10 easy miles at 4:00am on the home TM. I was worried that my feet might hurt since I only had 1 day in between my long and my mid-week long run. They certainly are sore. Lots of ice and PT stuff on them today. Hang on feet...hang on! Quick stretch and foam roll. Then back to bed for a quick nap before my kids got up. |

| TT: 1:09:21 AP: 8:40 I was super tired and slept in this morning. I was totally regretting my decision all day. It was speed workout day too....even worse. As per Josse ( I did modify it a bit), I did 2x (4x400) at a 1:37 pace or 9.3mph (per the McMillan calculator). .5 mile rest between each set. I haven't done speed in a very long time and was very nervous...yikes! 2 mile warm up at 6.5 mph .25 hard-9.3 mph. Last 2 were 9.4 and 9.5 .25 easy-6.0 mph Cool down at 6.5mph The 9.3mph was definitely puke zone. These were very hard. But now I have a starting point and hopefully see improvement! 2 x Ball squats Single leg hamstring lift Walking lunges with weights Side to side lunge Quick stretch and foam roll. After a year of sitting in boxes, my husband finally put the speakers up in our workout room. I got a medal hanger a few ago...he put that up too. Only marathon medals go on it! I hung all my running posters. It looks nice and I have no desire to ever go to the gym again :) |

We celebrated our 15 year wedding anniversary! We spent the night at the Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah. So I did my easy recovery run in their fitness center. My left foot peroneal/5 metatarsal was quite achy. I did a long ice session after.
Then we went cross country skiing at Solider Hollow. WOWZER....what an amazing workout. I went when I was in high school once and was able to pick it up quickly (it is so different than downhill skiing). My hubby gave it a good try!! The JR National Championship was going on...those kids are fast!
I skied for 2 hours. I shed every layer I had on, took off my hat and gloves. I was sweating like CRAZY!!! I turned my ankle a few times....hopefully it is nothing! We ate lunch and my husband was ready to be done, so we headed home. I am super tired! I think I like it a lot better than downhill skiing!!!
Next time I want to go snow shoeing!

On a benchmark note: Last time I did a "fast" 15 miler was on February 18, 2012. My time was 2:17:00 and AP was 9:11.
I had a fantastic run this morning in the warm weather! I had to start earlier than I would have liked and ran most of it in the dark.
I mentally broke the run up into 5 mile segments. At mile 5, there is a bathroom. So my first mental goal was to get to the bathroom...take a GU...shed my jacket. Then I had my 2.5 mile out and back and I was just mentally blah. I hit the bathroom again...took again GU...and tried to get the stupid jacket around my waist.
I got the new Garmin Forerunner 620 for my 15 year anniversary. I think it was miscalibrated because I ran my last 5 miles faster than MP. It was difficult, but I didn't feel like I was going to die. Definitely miscalibrated!!!!
I haven't been running this fast on my TM and was quickly reminded how much faster I am outside. I wanted to hit a few MP pace miles during the run and ended up with 8 miles of them. Hooray!
My feet held up great on the run, but are now very tender and achy...same with my calves. I won't run tomorrow and have a scheduled cross training day for Monday (next week is a rest week). Hopefully that will be enough time for my feet to recover.
Time to clean the house!!
(And I dropped another 2% body fat this week even though the scale didn't move....hooray!!!)

| I took my husband to the ER at midnight for kidney stones. He stopped breathing for a few minutes and I felt like my life flashed before my eyes. Everything turned out all right and he is home. Today was one of those days where I took a hard look at my priorities. And I took my youngest daughter to the doctor this morning. She has strep. And I need to go to the doctor to have my hand checked out....I think I have some sort of infection. And I'm beyond tired. I rented a bunch of red boxes for my kids and we will probably go to Mcdonalds for dinner. I'm not sure about a workout. PM: Three doctor visits, two trips to the pharmacy, and lots of medical bills today. But we are all doing much better! I was able to get a quick lifting workout in. Robyn took my body fat this morning. I had a cheat meal on Saturday and I can still feel the effects from it. Robyn said it can take up to 5-6 days for your body to equal out from it. I felt a bit frustrated by it, but quickly remembered that I need to have balance. I don't want to go through life without a few foods that I really like. Body fat was 20% (last week it was 19%). My last long run (15 miles) was a great run and I wasn't sure if I could do it again. And I was alone and the weather was iffy. BUT...it all worked out. I just ran. I looked at my Garmin occasionally and it all fell into place. Again, I broke the run into sections...the mile 5 and mile 11 bathroom and GU breaks. If I mentally just work on getting to those points, I could manage. I started to struggle with 4 miles to go. The wind picked up and it started to rain. I could feel the effects of those faster middle miles...PAIN CAVE. I mentally just focused on getting to the lamp post, then a sign until the end of the trail (and RAD yelling in my head....love you RAD). Then I knew I only had 1.6 miles to home. My AP was 20 secs faster per mile than last week. Yikes...I'm not sure if that is good or bad??? Hammies are tight and feet are a bit sore. It's over! I'll post all my splits when we get back...but I need to save my battery on my Garmin! So I did my run while my kindergartner was at school. I decided to try a route today. About 2 or 3 miles into the run, my Kneaders salad decided to revolt. All the park bathrooms were locked. I started looking for hiding places and then noticed a house being built and they had a POP. Heaven sent! I went to open the door....gave it a good tug and it was locked. I tugged at it again...still locked. I finally said, "Is someone in there?"....a very hesitant voice replied yes. I asked him to please hurry. Wow....what an experience. This wasn't a great run for me. My calves felt like they were full of lead. I had no spring in my step. I kept telling myself that it was my rest week and I NEED to take it easy. But as I look at my splits, my "fastish" times 2 years ago were only in the mid-9/mm. So I need to be pleased with an 8:43/mm on a crappy day (with an upset gut). I kept pushing the wrong buttons on my new watch.... I really need to figure it out. Also, since I've done my last few runs in the daylight, I noticed a lot more road kill (never saw it in the dark). It was significantly colder than I had anticipated this morning. I should have gone back and gotten a warmer shirt and gloves, but I didn't. And I paid for it later.
My hands were SO cold. Now (several hours later) they are still very tingly and swollen. Dumb move on my part.
My run was alright. I was cold and tired and it took awhile to get moving. That is one thing I really like running in the afternoon is that I don't feel like a zombie.
My shin was bugging a little bit this morning...I need to work on stretching my calves and scraping them.
I'm really tired. I feel like all I do is run and sleep. I'm getting so close though and then I will take some time off.

I can't leave him home alone for that many hours. So 4am it was....and dark and lonely! I wasn't sure what to expect from this run. It was strictly off feel because it was too dark to keep looking at my watch. As always, I mentally broke the run up into bathroom segments. I would think to myself....just make it to the Battle Creek bathroom...then the Lindon bathroom, etc. Not necessarily for potty needs, but more as land markers. They were all 4-5 miles apart. I like having those small achievable goals. I knew if I could make it there mentally, I would survive the early dark run alone. My 16 miler was an amazing run for me. My AP was an 8:09. I knew I couldn't go that fast today and I think I'm pleased with my AP. It is still faster than my marathon pace (I need to run an AP of 8:23 to get my BQ). As I was finishing today, I kept thinking to myself that come race day, I still would need 8 more miles. That is an 1:10:00 more of running and could I hang on that long. It is going to hurt! I stretched for awhile when I got home and soaked in the bath tub to warm up. I think the combination of those has left me with no soreness. Big success right there. It was warmer when I left my house, but windy on the canal. I didn't bring gloves again and my hands froze. When will I learn! |

Most exciting part of my day - I went to the nursery and picked up all my spring veggies to plant. They will all soak tonight and be put in the ground tomorrow. I LOVE working in my big garden!

Here's a little thing I wrote for our family blog:
The Journey
Awhile ago, I painted a pretty picture in my head. It was of my journey to qualify for the Boston Marathon. It was like one of those sports movies with music that played at just the right parts and the underdog always won.
But the actual movie has been nothing like my make-believe movie. My actual movie has played out like this:
On a Friday,I ran 18 miles alone and finished by 6:30am. Which means I started and ended when it was dark. Then on the following Monday, I ran 11 miles....in the dark. BUT 10 months ago, running this kind of mileage wasn't even imaginable. Or being mentally tough enough to run it alone.
I haven't been doing speed work on the track. The thought of doing intervals makes me want to vomit. It gives me anxiety. And It is hard. BUT I'm running almost 45 seconds per mile (in training) faster than I did 10 months ago. And I can still get to puke zone doing it.
My body is full of niggles right now. Training aches and pains. The hypochondriac in me is going crazy. BUT they are not full blown injuries and I can still train.
I had a goal of getting to a certain body fat percentage by race day. I can't get there if I really like sugar cookies. The demons laugh at my self mastery. BUT I'm getting closer to that number, albeit slowly.
I feel like my journey is in a constant state of change. I'm changing. I've come a long ways in the 10 months I have been training. Though I haven't conquered all my demons, I'm getting closer. I've conquered other things along the way which has made me a more disciplined runner. There are things that I once thought impossible or hard that I can handle semi-gracefully.
The journey that I thought I was going to experience is nothing like the journey I'm on.
Silken Laumann, an Canadian Olympian, said, "It's important to know that at the end of the day it's not the medals you remember. What you remember is the process--what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands--those are the things nobody can take away from you whether you finish twelfth or you're an Olympic Champion".
I'll find out how this movie plays out in 8 weeks.

We headed north first and did all the hills first. We refilled at the parking lot and headed south. Thankfully, the bathrooms were open at Willow Park and we could fill up our bottles. I really appreciate her conversation today. My legs didn't feel fresh from the start. This has been the most mileage I've ever run in a week so that probably contributed to the lead legs. They really started to get tired with 3-4 miles to go. I left Karen to speed up for the last mile. I think it is interesting that I run much faster alone. Maybe I just want to get it done?? I have a rest week next week and am going to take full advantage of it. I have a lot of niggles right now and need to let everything calm down. |

We are in St George for spring break. I hopped on a trail and just started to run. The destination for the turn around point was only 2.5 miles instead of 5 miles. So I was a bit miffed and had to come up with plan B.
I really like how many parks/drinking fountains they have. BUT holy hills!!!!!
My Garmin had a hard time connecting to the satellite, so my pace was a bit off. My shin was a bit achy achy to start, but felt alright by the end.
It was very tired after all our hiking today. But I sat in the chilly hotel pool for awhile and it mellowed out.
My husband likes to ski in the winter (so do I, but I'm not quite as crazy as he is) and I like to hike in the summer. So we decided to hike Snow canyon today. My kids just had a unit at school about the national parks in UT and about the rock cycle. They were telling us crazy facts during our hike today. They loved it!

I'm thinking I did this run a bit too fast because it felt hard. My legs were heavy and my breathing labored. My shin felt alright, but my calves were cramping near the end.

Salt Lake City Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:44:01 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 0.00 | 13.30 | 13.30 |
| Salt Lake Half Marathon Death March
There was nothing beautiful or lovely about this race. It was a 13.3 mile suffer fest.
I've been really nervous about this race. I knew that if I ran a 1:44 at the race today, I would be close to my BQ plan for the Ogden Marathon. I guess the anxiety of that 1:44 goal put me over the edge. And I wasn't sure how my body would hold up. It's getting worn out and semi-broken and I still have 4 weeks to go.
I left home at 5:00 am and found a great parking spot close to the finish area. I took Trax to the starting area. I found a few friendly faces, Josse, Ericka, Paul, Tiffany, and Allie.
I found the 1:45 pacer and had plans to hang with him for awhile. The gun went off and immediately, I knew this race was going to hurt.
The race started uphill and was followed by several more rolling hills. My heart rate was already going crazy and my breathing labored. My stomach felt sick with anxiety. I still had a LONG time to suffer through the streets of Salt Lake.
I hung with the 1:45 pacer for awhile but eventually left him during the Memory Grove down hill. I was able to pick up some speed during this section, but felt like I was still putting forth a lot of effort.
Tim and the kids were waiting for me at mile 5. It was SO wonderful to see friendly faces with a big sign!
Eventually, I saw the 3:25 marathon pacer and ran with them for several miles until they split off at mile 9. I still felt like I was exerting a lot of energy and had a long ways to go.
After the pacer turned off onto the marathon course, I tried to stay with the half marathoners that were with that group. My wheels started to rapidly fall off at mile 10. I felt like I kept pushing the gas pedal harder and harder, but the speed was not coming.
My calves were cramping and my mental mojo was trickling away. I was in shuffle mode and was just trying to hang on for dear life. The numbers on my watch kept getting slower and slower and my stomach was growing angrier by the second.
I kept thinking to myself, "This is SO hard. This isn't fun. My body is going to start revolting." I felt like I was going to burst into tears. This desperation was not part of my race plan.
I knew I only had less than a half mile to go. I turned the street corner and could see the finish line. But the more I pushed the pace, the further away the finish line got. It took forever to complete that last .5 miles. There was no euphoria or singing angels when I finally reached the balloon arch. I stepped off to the side right in front of the camera man and tried to keep my breakfast together. Tears started to form in my eyes....I have never had a race experience like that before.
My body hurt in ways I didn't know was possible. I had exerted so much mental and physical energy that I didn't care about anything else. Pain was the only word in my post race vocabulary.
But then I saw my beautiful family. My kids were cheering and the pain subsided momentarily. I was so glad they were there. I wanted to make them proud. I told them I ran the race in a very horrible 1:44:01....which was exactly my goal. A 7 minute course PR (the race director changed the course and it was way more difficult than last year in my opinion).
I said a quick goodbye to my beautifuls and all my grumpies returned. I left the race shortly thereafter to get home for a soccer game and egg hunt.
(Good to see Ericka at the finish line....she totally rocked her race!)
I was hoping to have a mental boost from running this half marathon today for my big race in May. But I'm unsure of what to think of the situation. I'm not sure I can handle that kind of excruciating nonsense for another 2 hours in a marathon. I felt like the harder I tried push the pace, the more I mentally and physically hurt. There was no adrenaline to take off the edge.
I hit my goal today so I'm not sure why I'm so hesitant and not feeling the "high". I may have entered into that next level of physical discomfort.
And it is really painful.

One of my main goals for this run was to keep it slower. I raced hard last weekend and had already run a lot if miles this week. I wanted to be safe and not stupid. As I started my run, the iPod that has my audiobook froze. I didn't want to take the time to mess with it. I was grateful I also grabbed my small shuffle. So I listened to music the whole way. I was really looking forward to my new book. My first 11 miles were great. I ran all the way to Orem....that's a long ways to go :). I was super excited to see the water fountains turned on. I also enjoyed seeing the various blooming orchards, large gardens, chicken coops, and blooming lilac bushes. AF, PG, Lindon and Orem residents along the canal do a good job in those areas! When I turned around, I started to struggle. I had 6 miles (mile 17) till my bathroom landmark and my body was starting to hurt. I finally got to the bathroom (5 miles till home) and my times started to slow way down. It was certainly a mental battle. The wind started going crazy during the last 3 miles and I had dirt/sand pelting me sideways in the face. It wasn't fun. I got home and laid on my bedroom floor for awhile and tried to convince myself that run was fun. As I was getting my ice bath ready, I started to cry in the bathroom to my husband. "I don't think I can run a marathon". My episode only lasted 5 minutes and I'm already feeling better about life. I've got 3 weeks to get my mental state back on track. Time to taper. |

My plan was to run this a bit faster. I haven't done anything really fast since the SL Half. My mile 1 split is the fastest that I've ever charged up temple hill. Looking at the splits, I started way too fast. I had the wind at my back and felt great. As soon as I turned around, I realized how crazy windy it really was. I almost lost my visor a few times. I felt like I was working 10x harder to just maintain my pace. I stopped at a few water fountains so I could get a rest from the wind. Once I got off the canal (I had 1.7 miles to home), I had the wind at my back again and really tried to push the pace. Thankfully, this time I got faster :) Long stretch and foam roll. Ogden Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:02:51, Place overall: 853, Place in age division: 97 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 0.00 | 26.20 | 26.20 |
| The Dream that Wasn’t – Ogden Marathon 2014 Recap
“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” ~ Michael Jordan
Once again, I am reminded that 26.2 miles deserves the utmost respect. It is a long time to be on the road and anything can happen.
I’ve never had such pre-race anxiety before. I usually never set a specific marathon time goal or set such high expectations before. I’ve never been so publicly open about my goals. Though I am full of craziness, I knew I had done my work and felt like my training was going to manifest itself with a BQ.
I headed up to Ogden on Friday afternoon to the expo. It is hard to explain the excitement of runners and spectators at an expo/starting line/finish line, but it is magical. The energy can actually be felt and I started to get really excited. I grabbed my packet and then headed up Ogden Canyon to drive the last half of the course. Though I have already run the course twice, I wanted to refresh my memory.
After my drive up and down memory lane, I check into my hotel, and then headed off to meet Rachel and friends for dinner. Rachel is a super star runner who has helped a lot of people met their running goals by being a race pacer. Though she wasn’t an “official” pacer for this race, she offered to pace me to a 3:40 marathon. I was beyond grateful! We had a yummy dinner at our favorite pizza place and headed off to our different destinations for the night.
Unfortunately, I did not sleep at all Friday night and hopped right out of bed at 3:50am. We met friends at the busses and took the long bus ride to the starting line. Though it was cold at the start staging area, it wasn’t cold enough. This meant for a hot morning. After waiting for an hour and a half, we finally shed our warm-ups and headed to the start.
I’ve never been this close to the starting line and felt a bit out of place. The national anthem was sung and the gun went off.
Though I had time splits written on my arm, I didn’t look at my watch. I let Rachel keep track of all that. My legs were not feeling super fresh even though I took a three-week taper. Four weeks before the race, I ran 53 miles, which was the most amount of miles I’ve ever run. I felt full of niggles and knew I needed that recovery period.
Around mile 8, it felt like someone took a gas pump full of lead and started pumping it into my legs. My breathing started to get labored and all the wheels started to fall off. I kept thinking to myself, “I run more than 8 miles everyday, what is going on? I still have 18 more miles to go.”
Rachel kept looking back and telling me everything was all right. We eventually made it to the halfway mark and I knew I was in trouble. I kept saying to myself I could turn things around and I could BQ. But more and more lead was being pumped into my legs and my heart rate kept getting faster. I was on top of my nutrition and water and was taking salt pills because of the heat, so why couldn’t my legs cooperate?
We finally made it to mile 17/18 where the elevation drops significantly down the canyon. Usually, this is where I can pick up speed and really start to feel good. Not today. My buddy Bradley came up behind us. He knew my goals and knew I should be way further along. I gave a weak smile and said, “I don’t want to talk about it”. No judgment was made and he ran with Rachel and I for several miles.
I finally got to the point of just looking at the yellow line on the road. Left foot….right foot….left foot….right foot. I zoned out. My legs were so heavy that I felt like the bad guy in the cartoon “The Incredibles” with his giant robot legs.
I saw the 3:45 pacer go by and took a major mental blow. I kept thinking of all the encouragement and kinds words people have said to me the past few days. “Come on Toby…NOW...NOW is the time to go” “Come on Toby…you’ve been working on this for 365 days…are you really going to let it slip away?” I would push that gas pedal to the floor but remained at a stand still. A few miles later, the 4:00 hour pacer passed me and I mentally lost it. I had only come up with one plan for this race – to run a 3:40 or less. There was no plan B. Or C. Or D. Now my only goal was to finish.
Rachel kept saying and doing all the right things but I just could not respond. We finally got out of the canyon and I knew Tim and the kids were going to be around mile 23. Rachel said to look strong to make my family proud. But as soon as I got through the tunnel and saw them, I lost it. I stopped to give each one of them a hug and sobbed. Tears streaming down my face. I felt as though I disappointed them while I shuffled by. By this point in the race, all of the facades and walls that I had up were replaced with very raw emotion.
Rachel jokingly said I needed to stop crying because it took much energy. Shortly thereafter, I saw my dear training partner Kellie. Ohhhh….what a ray of sunshine on a very dark day!
We finally hit mile 25 and turned onto the final stretch of the race. That last mile took so long to run. I could see the finish line and it never got any closer. I was so afraid my legs were going collapse. Finally….finally, I stepped over the timing mats. I was so disappointed. I felt like I had failed. I felt like had let so many people down. I was in a world of hurt physically and mentally.
My sweet family was standing right off the finishing area and it was nice to have a change of scenery. We planned a place to meet once I got out of the shoot. I asked Rachel what I did wrong? She said “Nothing. I can do all the right training and preparing and some days it doesn’t work out.” I am so grateful she is my friend and saw me through a very difficult day.
I grabbed some treats in the finish area and met Tim and kids. I started to cry once again…so very disappointed I didn’t hit my goal after so much work. I felt silly for sharing my hopes and dreams for the whole world to see and know I would have to face everyone with empty hands.
I recently read “The Mental Aspects of Running” by Sasha Pachev. I loved this paragraph.
“Jenny Spangler runs a 2:43 to qualify for the '96 Trials and she is in tears afterwards, and those are not tears of joy, she is disappointed because deep down she knows she is not a 2:43 girl. She enters the Trials with a B qualifier, nobody considers her a factor. She runs away from the field early on, they ignore her thinking she is a rabbit seeking some TV time, cannot keep the pace, and will come back. She does not come back winning with a 2:29. Had she not known deep down she was a 2:29 girl she would not have been in tears over 2:43. Had she not been in tears over 2:43 she would not have run 2:29.”
So now that it is over and I can look back…I need to run more miles in the heat. More strength training. More experience. More mental toughness. I had more demons today than dreams. I totally fell short of my goal and there is no one or thing to blame but myself. But I still have a BQ in me somewhere. Maybe not today or tomorrow or marathon #6 or #7….but someday.
Time to recover, move on and come up with a new plan. Failures lead to successes.
Chasing dreams and conquering demons 2015
(Thank you dear family, friends, and strangers for ALL your kind words. My phone, email, Facebook, and Instagram blew up this weekend with kindness. I thought about each of you while I was shuffling down the streets of Ogden. Thank you…thank you!)

Today was field day at school. I helped in one classroom in the AM and another in the PM. Unfortunately, we had a MAJOR "danger stranger" issue at school. Some kid's uncle offered to buy some students lunch. He brought it to the school but persuaded the kids out of the class to eat it with him on the lawn (teachers didn't know where the kids were). Everyone is safe, but I think some valuable lessons were learned.

Down AF Canyon and part of AF Half course
I got another babysitter this morning and Tim and I ran down AF Canyon from Tibble Fork. I actually did not like it. I was going much slower than I normally do and the road is extremly slanted, so one leg was always dropping further down than the other. But it was really good for Tim to run part of the course at his own pace.
There was a car coming right at us and I jumped onto the shoulder so I wouldn't get hit. But I landed on a large rock on the outside of my foot. Ouch!!
I left him around mile 10 and added a few more miles. The sun was up and it was warm.

| TT: 43:10 AP: 9:05 4x hills like last Tuesday. But hubby was gone again and I had to do it on my TM. It's always good to be flexible, right? 2 mile warm up 4 x 1:30 at 6.0 incline Speeds were #1 - 6.6mph ( at that incline it was equivalent to 7:26) #2 - 6.7mph (7:21) #3 - 6.8mph (7:15) #4 - 6.9/6.10 (7:05-7:10) I took 2:30 rest in between each one. These definitely felt hard to me. It's hard to compare a TM to the real hill, but I feel like I got a good workout in. Right after my workout, I took my kids to running camp. I am one of the coaches. Ha ha! They must be really desparate :). We did a lot of stretching, strength training and did a half mile run. It's funny because all the little kids take off in a dead sprint. I'm happy to announce that 2 of my kids were leading the whole way. My oldest daughter (who is very athletic) is determined to beat her younger brother (he is only younger by 2 minutes). Unfortunately he is 5-6 inches taller than her and much stronger. Keep at it girl! Then we play freeze tag....the girls lost! |

| We had another session of running camp. I got to help coach again! I think I've learned all the kid's names and was genuinely excited to see them (and see if they ran during the week).
I led the stretches and helped the kids do some form drills. The kids loved it and I loved being with them.
Then we did our 1/2 or 1 mile run. The kids are so fun to run with....especially the little kids. They respond to encouragement so well. The goal of the run was to beat the old lady...me!
Then we did relay races. I'm not very good at the chicken walk or crab walk. But I can dominate in the leaping.
I was very much in my element and loved helping and encouraging the kids. My own kids did great in the run too.
But I'm super tired today. I spent all yesterday at Activity Day Girls camp with 2 of my daughters (there were 13 girls total). Shooting BB guns, archery, making crafts, and shopping at the trading post is a lot of work :)

All my running buddies bailed on me early this morning, so I headed down to Provo to do my long run. Ohhh...my legs were heavy. I saw Allie go by and gave her a cheer, but I was on the other side of the road and I wasn't sure if she heard me. I saw Jen Hughes and shortly thereafter, I saw Lily. I ran with her for a little over a mile. She did awesome but was ready to be done. I left her at mile 12. She's so great!
I ran to the finish line and chatted with friends. Then headed back up the canyon. Not very often do I get to see the lead runners come (because I am running the race). What an amazing experience....they make it look so effortless! I saw the lead marathon woman and her motorcycle escort....WOW!!!! I gave her a shoutout and she gave me a weak smile. Glad to know the elite get tired too :)
I saw Rachelle, Josse, Janae and Julie....ohhhh....it is so much better to cheer, than race :) Ha Ha! I know a lot of people had a hard run today....way to gut it out.
My overall time got messed up today. Too many stops and starts to cheer and I accidently stopped my watch at the finish line. My run certainly wasn't very fast today. I need to figure out my heavy leg syndrome! But I did end my run going up the 800 N on tired legs.

Way to go UVHM/M finishers!

WOW...what a beautiful morning for a run! I was suppose to do this run on Wednesday, but hubby will be a girls camp, so I decided to do it today while he was home this morning. Since all my runs have been stinky lately, my main goal was just to log the miles.
I would occasionally look at my watch and thought I would die any moment when I saw the pace. But I was able to hold on. I made a quick decision to throw in a few MP miles at the end. And I was able to hold it....there is hope this body can run fast again :)
Running the faster miles irritated my groin. I need to stretch a bunch today.

After 15 years of marriage, I finally convinced my husband to run a half marathon. He picked out a training plan and did a great job following it. I decided to forgo my racing the race and pace Tim.
We stuck behind the 1:55 pacer until we got to the mouth of the canyon (mile 8). He was feeling good and had fun seeing lots of friends and neighbors.
Once we hit the golf course and the downhill subsided, he started to get tired. He was hanging on, but I knew he was hurting. I was feeling great and was having a splendid time!
The last 3 miles he started to slow down. I knew he was so tired, but that he didn’t want the 1:55 pacer to creep up behind him. Finally, we got to the AFHS and he had lots of people cheering for him!
We got our Kneaders French toast and ate it with some friends. I was getting the full course press on a fall marathon for me. I tried to blow it off. I’m hoping I can slide under the radar!!
My legs felt wonderful and I ran the last part of the course and then ran home to get 15 miles for the day. I quickly showered and then had to pick up the kids from Grandma’s house. The 3:50am wake up was starting to rear it’s ugly head!! Thankfully, I was able to take a nap. We had lunch at In N Out and I worked in my garden all afternoon. I picked my first full bucket of peas. Mmmmmm…..
My legs still feel great! I really like the non-pressure of pacing, but still getting to experience the race. Great job Tim!!

I headed out at dark thirty this morning and I'm feeling very tired. My Garmin had a hard time connecting to the satelite, so my splits were slightly off. Thankfully, I know the distance and could use the timer function.
I felt alright on the run. I didn't push as hard coming back like I usually do. I'm doing a hill session tomorrow and wanted to save something for tomorrow.
This is birthday celebration week - my triplets are turning 10. We party all week long. And we are going on a small trip for the 4th of July. I'm nervous about getting all my runs in. It will happen, but its going to be tricky.
This is also going to be a 50 mile week for me. During my last training cycle, I only hit 50+ miles twice. But from now until my fall marathong, I hope to hit 50+ miles 6 times. I hope my body can handle it. I'm really making an effort to stay on top of my vitamins and healthy food.

When my alarm went off early this morning, I just shut it off. I didn't even realize what I had done until it was too late. My triplets turned 10 today. We had a big family breakfast, opened presents and headed to Target to spend some of their birthday cash.
My girls had a craft party in the afternoon with their friends. Those that know me well...crafting is NOT a talent of mine (I can sew...but no crafts). It took every ounce of creative juices for the next 5 years to come up with the party details. But my girls had fun and everyone was happy.
We then went to Fashion Place Mall to go to the Lego store. You have to be a special person to work there!!! Then we took them to Cheesecake Factory for dinner. They always complain that we never take them there (duhhhh...you guys are 10!!!!). They loved it.
So I finally started my run at 7:30pm with a very full gut. Ughhhh...I had a mad tummy. Lots of potty stops and TM hop offs so I wouldn't puke. Nothing fast or impressive. But the miles are logged.
Quick stretch and foam roll.

We had a great conversation and I was grateful for the change of scenery :) Yesterday while riding 4 wheelers, I hit a big bump and my shin went crashing into the front of the frame. I was riding a kid size 4 wheeler and my legs were WAY too long to be on it. So I have 2 huge gashes on my shin and calf. Kinda funny. I write this for my own personal remembering. My right shin was totally aching after Wednesday and Thursday's run. Of course I was nervous. Tim dug into my calf, I used zany TENS unit and iced all day. I took yesterday off. It feels good. I didn't sleep well last night and turned my alarm off. My thumb is infected again and I've been to the doctor 5 different times about it. Grrrrr....so between my huge, throbbing thumb and my gashes from the 4 wheeler, it was a long night. So I started my run at 7:30 pm and ran downstairs. This is actually a bit faster than I normally run on the TM,miso that's a plus. I'm concerned that I haven't done any strength training last week or this far this week. Running camp - 1 mile. I run a lot with twin sisters Hailey and Hannah. They are about 7-8 years old. There is something about their muscles....they seem soft. Their arms and legs go flailing around and it takes a lot of effort to move their legs. I'm not sure what it is. Mom and Dad came to watch them today. I introduced myself to them and told them how great their girls are doing. They can finally run a mile now. They had hear all about some coach and how much the girls like to run......how good it has been for their therapy. YEAH!!!! I've been in a conendurum about running lately. I try REALLY hard to get up early and get my working out done before my family even gets ups. I have a neighbor who is constantly gone from her kids (they are left alone) teaching various workout classes. I totally understand that moms need a break, but I feel like (for my neighbor) her family is suffering because of her absence.
Therefore most of my runs are done alone (it's hard to find buddies to go super early). I've been struggling a bit to find the motivation to go alone day after day. The long runs are even harder. So when I got a text yesterday to run with Rachel, Smooth and Karen, I knew I HAD to go. I needed a buddy. I found a babysitter this morning and felt guilty for leaving my kids. BUT I felt better. My spirits were lifted. I appreciated all the encouragement from my friends. Sometimes it is hard to find balance.
ONTO THE RUN:
Oh my...the humidity. I was sweating just sitting in the car. It was comparable to running in the Bahamas. Uck! But there was some good cloud cover and lots of good conversation. My legs were definitely tired after running 12 miles yesterday. I was suppose to do some MP miles, but it wasn't happening.
So glad I went. So glad the long run is over. So glad for a shower. So glad for a nap.

Dark o'clock run. It took me awhile to find my mojo. I started a new audiobook and it always takes me awhile to figure out all the characters!
So its been interesting this training cycle. I've been doing more structured speedwork (track and hills). But I feel like I'm getting slower on these longer runs. Last training cycle, I would do MP/HMP miles during the run. I could run this course in an 8:30's pace and today (and other days) I only squeaked out an 8:59 pace. Just when I think I have running figured out, it reminds me I know nothing!
This is my last run of the week. Tim and I are heading to Trek for the remainder of the week. I'm hoping for a small miracle that my running won't suffer. I just hope it is not crazy hot!! Tally HO!

We are back from Trek. And we survived! I was very surprised at how wonderful an experience it was. I guess it was the element of the unknown and being dirty for several days that made me hesitant. I'm very glad I went and have a greater appreciation for our pioneer heritage.
I did walk a lot (12 miles on day 2), but there was no stretching going on! I can feel that I'm very stiff and creaky and that is how my run went this morning. Stretching is on the top of the "to-do" list all week.

Last Week Today
400-1:35 400-1:38
400-1:34 800-3:21

400-1:34 400-1:33
I was all over the place today. I definitely ran my 800's faster, but my 400's were a lot slower than last time. I really dislike those 800's......they are just plain hard and make me want to poop my pants (sorry for the TMI).
I'm learning I get a bit more comfortable with th uncomfortable. I will try again next week.

I really struggled with mojo this morning and the "shut-eye" won. I didn't start the run until almost 4:00pm and took a lot of physical effort to just walk down to the basement. I felt alright during the run. Mind over matter today.
During my last marathon training cycle, I felt that "fire" (for lack of a better term) all the time. I was so motivated. I knew that if I worked hard enough I would get my BQ at Ogden. But that didn't happen.
This training cycle, I've done all my workouts, and hit my miles. But hardly any fire. I'm not even sure I'll be able to get any benchmark races before a fall marathon. I guess what I'm trying to spit out.....I'm not feeling that pressure. Heck....I don't even know what race I'm doing. I'm even considering not wearing my watch on race day. I have no idea what is in store. Maybe I'm finding balance. Or just rambling because I'm tired :)

I met Smooth, Karen, Collette, and Leslie at the PRT this morning. Oh my...what a fun group of ladies. It was fun to laugh, chat and just enjoy a slow run in the shade. There was even a Josse and Ericka sighting! My legs felt great except for the whopper of a blister on the bottom of my foot.
We soaked in the river for a long time after.....it felt so wonderful!
I refueled at Chipotle and bought a few new running clothes. Great day!

I had my normal pretrack workout anxiety and didn't sleep well.

Running with a buddy certainly makes you run faster. I'm hoping I can keep her coming on Tuesdays! Those 800's were extremely hard. I felt like my gut was going to fall out. But each one got faster....yeah! Getting more comfortable with the uncomfortable.
AM 2: 1 mile with the running camp kids. It was probably more, but it was slow. We have our big race next week!!!
Ive been so tired lately! My husband jokes with me that I need to stop smoking and using drugs and find a better lifestyle choice! Ha Ha! When my kids do their 30 minutes of reading , I totally crash on the couch!!

JRP
Sweet Rachel met me in the middle of the night to help me through my long run. I think my favorite Rachel saying was while she was turning on her head lamp "It's for the skunks". So reassuring.
We had a wonderful run! I'm so glad that even though she has reached elite status, she will still run with me :). It was fun to catch up on life and have someone to squish snails, run big hills, drink obscene amounts of water, and get super sweaty with. Oh that JRP is humid!
She left around mile 13 and I was sad to see her go. I turned on my iPod and listened to my book and eventually switched to music. The last 3 miles, my legs started to get heavy. I always start to think....how can I go faster and still run 6 more miles. Ughhhh..
I forgot to bring a towel and my car seat needs to be sanitized from all my sweat.
Off to have my 7 years old birthday. I sure hope I can get a nap in sometime today. |

| Nothing! I'm suppose to have a lower mileage week next week. But the following week, I'm going to be traveling with my family. It will be really tricky to do a big mileage week (including a 20 miler) while on vacation. SO, I'm going to do 3 big weeks in a row which means I needed to rest today. This probably makes no sense, but I'm trying to be smart. We'll see if if all turns out. My baby turned 7 today. Sigh....why do they grow up so fast. |

I was nervous about this workout. My groin was still super tight and I knew speed was going to aggrivate it even more. But I stretched it all night. It was tight this morning, but I was able to finish the workout. I hope I wasn't being dumb.
Today was 8x400. The thought of doing 800's made me want to vomit. It was still a great workout and having another person there breathing down your neck was awesome! My times are getting faster....slowly but surely! Next week we are going to do mile repeats....ughhhhh....

| This summer our kids participated in running camp. We did it through the AF Rec Center and I was able to be one of the coaches. I LOVED working with the kids twice a week and watching them progress. We started each running session with stretching, drills, and a few strength training exercises. Then we would go for a run followed by running games. Today was our last day at camp and we celebrated by having a 1 mile and 2 mile race. All the Barlow kids swept the podium! Abby was the first girl in the 1 mile race with a 7:57: Annie was the first girl in the 2 mile race with a 15:24 (a 4 min PR): Carter came in 2nd in the 2 mile race with a 15:52: Georgia came in 2nd girl in the 2 mile race with a 17:52: I'm so proud of my kids for working so hard all summer! They had great sportsmanship and made their mom proud!! (Shoot...I couldn't get the pictures to copy over!) PM: 3 miles on home TM while waiting for hubby to get home. 17 miles on the gym TM with Kellie. It's been forever since we've run together and it was great to catch up. She is still speedy fast. It definitely made the miles go by faster. I didn't get started until 5:00pm. Groin still very tight. Lots of stretching and foam rolling. Since I timed out the TM several times, I'm guessing my AP was 9:20-9:25. I didn't feel quite as hammered as I normally do! |

| I am at the Kara Goucher running retreat in Napa Valley! I feel very blessed that I was able to attend...it is certainly a luxury! Last night we had a cocktail party and dinner with 50 women from all over the US....all runners of course! Kara was there and as amazing in person as she is on TV. It was fun to meet all sorts of women and learn the reason why they run! This morning we had a Pilates class (not a huge fan) and then headed out for a run with Kara. She ran slow so we could all join her. It was fun to sight see through the city, but there was a lot of stop lights and congestion. Again, I have really enjoyed meeting so many different ladies. After the run, we had a core class, shower then lunch. This afternoon was spent attending different classes. Nutrition, hydration, Being the Best You and a talk by her husband and Tim from Run the Edge. Tonight Sally, the CEO of Oieselle is going to speak....can't wait. This has far exceeded my expectations and I'm so very glad I went. My groin and quad has been super achy though. I'm need to go see the PT when I get home. |

| 5 easy miles through a park in Napa. Oh it was so very beautiful! I ran with some amazing women today...doctors, lawyers, and other very impressive careers. It was so wonderful to hear their life stories! We had a great farewell brunch. Everyone had to share something that they were good at and something "I will do". It was truly inspiring! We spent the afternoon in SF killing time before our flight leaves. It was an amazing weekend and I feel like being a bit better! |

| I got home from the Kara Goucher running retreat one week ago. I came home SO inspired and ready to battle through the last 6 weeks of training. But my hip/groin had been achy for a week. And now it was a hurting hip. I saw my PT on Monday....oh he is a good tool to have in my running toolbox! I explained my recent training and the PT I had done on it. He explained the very grey area of soft tissue stress that can eventually turn into a stress reaction that can turn into a stress fracture. He did a lot of work on it and told me to take off the next 10 days from running. I have to wear an ace bandage around my thigh/stomach to help support the femoral neck. If it feels better, then it was soft tissue...if it doesn't feel better, then it is a stress reaction and requires 6 weeks off (he didn't feel like it was a stress fracture). I came home from the appointment feeling very defeated. I can confidently say that I've taken my vitamins, got enough sleep, lifted weights at least once a week (sometimes more), and been diligent on my stretching and foam rolling. So I went through the anger, depression, guilt, more anger, more depression cycle. I've put in 1.5 years of good, smart training and have had none of the results I've sought after. In my mind, I start to think that maybe my body isn't cut out for qualifying for Boston. Maybe I need to pick a new goal. BUT I DONT WANT to pick a new goal (there goes that vicious cycle again...anger, depression). We went on a family vacation to Moab and that was a good distraction. But my family thinks I am always injured and why am I being so dumb....what am I doing wrong. Blah, blah, blah.... I didn't do any exercising this week except for a hike out to Delicate Arch. It was a good physical and mental break....I got a sinus infection too, so that contributed to the lack of exercising. Hopefully, I will feel better enough to bike and lift tomorrow. School starts too, so I will have more time to cross train. I really hope it is just soft tissue issues. If I can run the marathon in 5 weeks, my only goal is just to finish. |

I'm a much happier gal when I can run... my family can attest to that! I went to my chiropractor yesterday and his massage therapist did some DEEP tissue therapy on my hip, low back, psoas, and adductor. YIKES....that was painful, but it feels significantly better today. Another tool in the running tool box!
I decided to do a short run outside and see how everything felt. The hardest part was my breathing as I'm still shedding my sinus infection. I could feel my hip, but it wasn't painful.

Last Thursday, I went to my chiropractor to have him do some ART on my hip. He had to do something and sent me to his in-house massage therapist. She did some DEEP tissue work all over (including some places the PT hadn't worked on - low back, psoas). Oh my, that was painful. But come Sunday and today, all my hurties hurt just a bit less and I could do my stretches a bit deeper.
I went and saw her again today and have another appointment for later on in the week. I'm starting to feel a glimmer of hope. I also found some great exercises to help the adductor.
6 easy mile on the home treadmill. I could feel the adductor being really tight, but everything else felt better.
On a funny note...my PT had given me an ace bandage to wear around my thigh and stomach. It gave me a terrible rash which gave me a terrible case of the itchies!!! Oh my it itched so bad!! I finally got a cream to help it calm down. I feel like I have the chicken pox!

Tim and Carter went on a backpacking trip in the Unitas so I ran on my home TM. I was a bit nervous as this was my longest run in 3 weeks. After 45 minutes, my hip started to warm up and felt alright. I kept everything slow. My thigh bruised up a lot after scraping it last night (Josse would be proud!!!). I'm hoping it helped.
Running a long run at home on a Saturday isn't ideal, but the miles were logged. Lots of kids interruptions.
We went up to Sniagrab and I got a new pair of skies and boots for super cheap! I'm thinking about getting a season pass to Sundance...then I can snowshoe and downhill ski. There was even a Karen sighting!!!

Today is my 36th birthday. I celebrated by doing all my favorite things! I went on a run with Collette (even the weather was fall-like...my favorite). I sure appreciate that sweet woman!
Then we went hiking as a family up Donut Falls in my favorite canyon (Big Cottonwood). Though it was crowded, it was gorgeous. The leaves are starting to turn colors and it was a bit chilly (I was in heaven!!!). We ate donuts at the top!
We ate lunch at Freebirds and enjoyed a yummy burrito bowl.
It truly was a wonderful day with my family and friends!

| TT: 3:01 AP: 9:42 This run goes into the "it was so bad, that we had to laugh instead of cry" category. I somehow convinced Collette to do a long run with me after we dropped our kids off at school. We drove up to Provo Canyon for a change of scenery, but we didn't start until 9:30. We headed south to the Riverside Country Club then headed up to Vivian Park. Immediately, my legs got heavy (Ogden Marathon heavy). At first, I thought it was because of my lack of running this week. But the further I got, I realized it was more than that (and probably lack of running). Collette had a ton of walk/bathroom/Chapstick/iPod breaks. Finally, I just had to keep running...the starting and stopping was killing me. She would catch up, but started feeling sick. I started to feel the nausea coming on. We were a sad sight. It was starting to get hot and the sun was beating on us (and I had no salt tablets). I had to take a few walk breaks too so the pukes wouldn't come. And my calves were cramping like crazy. I finally got back to the car and just laid on the grass....too afraid I was going to puke. Collette was feeling lightheaded too. We headed down to our secret soaking spot in the river. The red gatoraide was not feeling too hot in my stomach. Getting in the river was the best part of the afternoon. My feet started to have wild/crazy Charlie horses when they hit the water. Everything calmed down after awhile...feet/stomach. We laughed about how yucky the run was! We were contemplating stopping to get burgers and fries on the way home. It sounded yummy, but my stomach was still iffy. We settled for Cokes. I'm so grateful for Collette for enduring a horrific, hot, pukey run with me. That is a true friend! I need to upload data from my Garmin, but I'm way too comfy on the couch to do it! |

I had a really hard time sleeping last night. My calves kept cramping and my house was really hot. So when my alarm went off at dark o'clock, I just got up. I haven't done a dark o'clock run in awhile...it was nice.
My legs were really heavy the first 2 miles...look at those slow poke splits. But I was able to get them moving a bit. Hip is sore.
Lots of soccer games, working in the garden and harvesting potatoes, tomatoes, raspberries, and carrots. I LOVE harvest time.
I sure hope I can sleep tonight.

Another early morning TM run at home. Hip felt better. We have our ward 5k tomorrow. I'm trying to decide if I should race it OR run in with my son. I really don't like 5k's and haven't run one in several years. But it would be nice to get some speed in.

I woke up my kids and headed over to the church for our annual rodeo. There were 11 people at the 5k, so I thought I might have a chance of winning it this year....ha ha! But they did change the course and we had to run up temple hill...ughh!
They shouted "go" and everyone took off. A young man started off with a bolt up that darn hill. But as soon as we turned the corner, he started to walk and I took off. I enjoyed the downhill. I was fearing the YM or Heather were going to be on my heels any minute, so I just kept going. The last mile has some really ugly rollers. I was totally in puke zone and was feeling frustrated when I passed the 3.1 mile and I will had a block and church parking lot to go.
But I won and got in a good workout. As soon as I got my pukes settled, I ran back and got my son. He came in 4th overall and ran a wonderful race!! GO Carter!! My girls ran the 1K and Annie won, Georgia came in 3rd and I don't know about Abby.
Off to enjoy the rodeo!

PRE-RACE THOUGHTS
When I crossed the finish line of the Ogden Marathon in May, my cup was full of sadness, disappointment, and frustration. None of those are the reasons why I run. I knew I had to make a personal change, but I didn't know what I needed to change.....my training, my goals, or my mental toughness. I just didn't know.
I started another training cycle with hopes of qualifying for the Boston marathon in the fall. I was able to increase my mileage to a steady 50 miles/week. I continued with my strength training and stretching. I even made the ultimate commitment to hit the track once a week. And to put the icing on the cake, I invited some very talented runners to help push me.
But my hip started to ache. Not just the "oh, I'm tired" ache...but the ache of something is definitely not right. That feeling of dispair started to settle and I went through the mourning cycle. Anger, sadness, depression.....anger, sadness, depression.
I was diligent with my rehab. But I knew if I wanted a happy hip, I had to reduce my miles and cut out my speed work. I continued to workout and did not know what the future would hold.
Just a few weeks ago, I decided to run the Top of Utah Marathon in Logan, Utah. I still had the desire to get a BQ, but knew my training was not 100%. So I had no specific goal in mind. In fact, I asked Smooth (a dear running friend and travel buddy) in the hotel the night before the race what she thought my goal should be. She suggested a PR, which would be a 3:58 or under.
FRIDAY
I was at the grocery store just before I left town and spotted Allie (Utah's elite marathoner). We talked running in the produce section. What a treat! I was able to take a long nap before I picked up Smooth. It was great to catch up with her on the way up to Logan. I sure love that lady. She is funny and full of wisdom! We thoroughly enjoyed the fall leaves though the canyon. We drove the last portion of the course (which included lots of twists and turns) to familiarize ourselves with it. We headed to the race expo and then got some pizza (another Allie sighting). We went to the hotel and crashed early!
RACE DAY
Smooth and I got on the hotel shuttle to head to the busses. It was perfect weather for race day! I got a little motion sickness on the way up and it felt like we were on the bus forever. I was so excited to see the start staging area! After waiting in the POP line, we headed to the warm tent. Soon enough it was time to shed our warm clothes and go to the starting line. It was cold and I was thrilled!
I decided I would try to stick with the 3:55 pacer as long as I could and shoot for a PR. The gun brigade went off and 26.2 miles lay ahead of us. The 3:55 pacer went off like a shot and by mile 2, I looked at my watch....we were running a sub 8 minute miles. YIKES, I knew I couldn't sustain that pace. I knew the pacer was trying to bank some time while going down the canyon. I couldn't hang on.
I let him go and started to feel sad. Another running failure. Another step backwards.
During the next several miles, I had a "come-to-Jesus" talk with myself. I knew I didn't have the training for a BQ. I was starting to realize maybe a PR wasn't in the cards either. So why be so sad and disappointed? Could I let those feelings of dispair go? Could I just go with the conditions that were present? Could I be flexible? It took me several miles to think and contemplate.
Around mile 10, I came to the conclusion that I could not have another bad race. Mentally, I couldn't handle it. I needed to have a positive experience because I don't run to feel sad. I don't run to feel like a loser. I don't run to have the weight of the world sitting on my shoulders. I run because I love the way it makes me feel. I run to feel empowered.
So I just decided to run. Suddenly the fall leaves became brighter. I could feel a slight tailwind. I could hear the volunteers cheering my name. I could feel myself smile. I didn't look at my watch for the rest of the race. I knew my pace was slowing down, but my spirits were staring to soar.
At one of the aid stations, I heard a little boy yell, "I have the best gatorade ever". He was waving his cup around, sloshing red stuff everywhere. He totally made my day! I took his drippy cup and it tasted better than any other gatorade I had the whole race. Thank you little man for your enthusiasm.
We exited the canyon. I was thrilled to see spectators out cheering for their loved ones. Their signs they held were bigger and brighter than any I had seen. Their cowbells were louder. Their pump fists bigger. I was actually feeling this race.
The GU I took at mile 18 almost made me barf and I think I freaked out some volunteers. It made me laugh. I threw it out and took an orange and salt tablet instead.
The last 6 miles were full of twists and turns. I started visualizing my favorite training runs...."oh I just have to the trail bathroom and back...I can totally do that". I was able to sing to the songs in my head flowing through my iPod. I could hear the music from the finish line around mile 24. I didn't have feelings of desperation. I was alright. The mean little hill on Main Street wasn't so bad. The finish line didn't seem forever away. I cherished the announcer calling out my name. I had enough strength to raise my hands under the finish arch. I could smile. I could feel the excitement and not feel like I was going to die.
At the finish of every race, I have a tendency to bend over and put my hands on my knees. I think the immediate stopping makes me loose my balance or puke. I had a sweet volunteer call me by name and ask if I need a bucket. For once, I was able to smile and tell him no thanks....I am great! I walked through the finish area and saw the medical area with several runners hooked up to IV's. I felt a deep gratitude that I was able run not necessarily fast today, but happy and healthy.
I'm sure some may look at this race as I set a goal and failed to meet it.
Yes....I didn't hit a PR.
BUT I was able to let go of a lot of negative demons. I was able to feel in this race. I was able to smile and enjoy. I was able to sing songs in my head after running for 4 hours. I call it victory.
Don't get me wrong, I still have a goal of qualifying for Boston. But it is going to be a journey.
A long one.
And if it is going to be up and down, hilly, and hard, I need to soak in all of the goodness it has to offer.
So now my plan comprises of a week of nothingness. I need to clean my house. Pick the raspberries, potatoes, carrots and beans in my garden. I have a goal to have no workout clothes in the wash. I need a break. I'm thinking about running a 50k in October. I'm going to do the least possible amount of running I can to finish the race.
I'm going to cut my mileage and intensity way back during November and December....lots more cross training. I'll start picking things back up in January. I've been giving 110% for 1.5 years and my body needs to recover. I'm curious to see what 2015 will bring!

I changed my wet shirt and headed to meet Smooth at her house. I got really cold on the drive over. It took me a few miles to warm back up and get my legs moving again. We ran about 8.5 miles. I love running with Smooth...she always makes me feel like a million bucks! The weather was gorgeous and I was in heaven running with my buddy.
I had to hurry off to soccer games. My legs felt good, but I had a weird pain in my bum. I really need to stretch good tonight. And take a nap.

We are going to Park City as a family for fall break. I knew that being gone for 3-4 hours for a long run would not be conducive to a happy family. So today was the lucky day.
I always struggle mentally the first half of a long run, then feel great the second half. That is how it was today.
I started right after my kids left for school. I got a new audio book and listened to it until mile 11, then turned on music.
For my own records...the course:
300 N - Manilla Elementary - Silo Road - Canyon Road - golf course trail - highland park drinking fountain - No County Blvd - roamed through Alpine - hit the everflowing drinking fountain - roamed through Highland - hit the everflowing drinking fountain again - SR 92 - No County Blvd
I felt alright during the run, but was very slow. When I hit mile 15, I kept thinking, "I'm only half way through...regarding the race"....those aren't good thinks! I think my biggest issue for this 50k next weekend will be mental toughness. But my only goal is to finish.
After run thoughts: I kept moving. I have tendancy to lie around and be lazy after races/long runs. But today, I kept moving and I feel good. The tops of my feet are sore....I think I tied my shoes too tight.
Also, I'm so sick of drinking water after races/long runs, that I have a tendency to drink a lot of coke. And it always tastes really good!!! I'm going to take tomorrow off and then run Friday and Saturday in PC. I hope these legs can make it.
I'm rambling!

| My last run in Park City for this trip! I've decided that I REALLY like it up here. It fits the lifestyle that my family lives. We do a lot of skiing, hiking, running and biking. Hmmmm.....may be something to think about.
I found a new dirt trail today and was in instant utopia. I was feeling a bit frustrated at how slow my pace was....the more I run, the slower I get. I'm hoping someday I can figure this running thing out.
Yesterday, we went to the Olympic park. While my kids were doing the ropes course, i asked a lady next to me about her Big Cottonwood Marathon t shirt. She had her 10 year old run it with her. They ran a 4:10. So I have a 10 year son who likes to run....but no way would I let him do a marathon.
Then another family came and sat by us. The husband heard the last part of our conversation....and we started talking running. He is apart of the WMR and run several ultras. He found me on Facebook and gave me some great advice. Runners are the nicest group of people.

| I finally ran my first ultra marathon - The Goblin Valley 50k. That was one of the neatest experiences I've ever done in my running career.
Video
Very brief recap:
26 runners ran the ultra marathon
Miles 0-5: Felt horrible and thought I was going to have to take the the sag-wagon back to the start.
Miles 5-20: I got stronger with every mile. We walked all the uphills. I was very on top of my hydration and food intake.
Miles 20-23: I had a potty stop here. I started to loose steam...I'm not sure if it was from stopping or just because I was getting tired.
Miles 23-27: Feeling strong and enjoyed a nice long downhill stretch.
Miles 28-31: Definitely tired at this point. One of my favorite parts of the whole race was to see the spectators on top of a large bluff....the people were tiny. I knew once we saw spectators we were close to the finish. BUT....we had to climb the large bluff. THEN we got to the parking lot and the finish line was 10 feet away on the right. But we had to run through the goblins on the left....this included a sharp, sandy decline...running through sinking dirt...lots of twists and turns and big climbs. Finally, we crossed the finish line.
There were many contributing factors for this amazing event. First (and foremost) was running with Rachel and Paul. Most of the other runners were alone and I couldn't imagine being out there for that many hours by myself. Though I didn't talk much, I responded to the conversation in my head and was just grateful for their being there.
I LOVED the laid back feel of the ultra. I liked walking up the hills. I liked that no one asked me if I had run Boston. I liked that the front runners took time to hand out high-fives. I liked that I could run slow and long and still feel like a winner.
The course was beautiful. God's artistic hand was definitely noticed in this state park.
I will definitely do more ultras! I still have some unfinished marathon business to finish, but I can see ultras in the futures.
THANK YOU Rachel and Paul for giving me the experience of a life time!

This is my first run since the GV 50K last week. I finally did it....I took a break after a race. I've had this mentality that I always need to be running (even if it is short and slow). I had a lot of niggles and knew that I HAD to take some time to rest. And I did. YEAH! I also took a break from all things running....reading running blogs, FB and Instagram feeds, talking about running.
I certainly felt creakly this morning. And kind of fat and soft - I guess that happens when you don't run for 7 days!

I really needed to clear my head today outside. I helped at my kid's school and then headed down to Orem to the water tower. I got on the Bonneville Shoreline trail. It had been several years since Ive been there and forgot how hilly that first mile is. I finally found my grove but it was way hotter than I thought. I wish I had more water. It sure was beautiful!
I only got 9.5 miles, so I drove down to the MC and finished up my last few miles there. On the way home, I stopped at a gas station and bought the biggest Gatoraide they had. I guzzled the whole thing down in the parking lot. Then it sloshed around in my gut all the way home.
Great day!

| I'm REALLY trying to be smart and use November/December as an off season. I think I started my Ogden marathon training too early and it came back to get me. So today was a rest day.
I have a daughter who is a hoarder. It is quite funny because my husband and I are minamalist. So I'm not sure where she got that from. We have been switching bedrooms around - we had to split up my 2 big girls because of the hoarding.
It has been moving furniture, painting, dejunking and major cleaning at my house. We probably have another week of major stuff. But today, I sorted all my running/outdoor gear. No one probably cares, but my life feels much better when I have order.
When mom is happy...everyone is happy!

MCT with Karen
Karen texted me yesterday about doing our long run on Friday. I had to attend my triplet's wax musuem performance in the morning, so we started a bit later. It was a beautiful run on the canal. Great pace and conversation! So glad we got to catch up!
I noticed when I tried to go faster my hip/adductor always starts to bug. It's been alright the past few weeks since I've kept things short and slow, but I could totally feel it today. Grrrr.....

| I was beyond tired and really wanted to stay in bed today. We went skiing yesterday. I was the "caboose" and stay behind all the kids while we skied. Therefore, it was a slow snow plow for several hours (it was a great day of skiing though - no meltdowns and all smiles). After 10 miles, weights and a full day of skiing, my legs were toast.
My only goal was to finish!
TT: 33:33 (3 minutes slower than last year)

Mandy and I stayed with our husbands the first lap, then started to pick up the pace. We just kept talking and running. By the last mile, I couldn't talk anymore because we were running too fast.
I was feeling a bit down and grumpy about last year's turkey trot race. I won the 35-39 age catagory last year and my husband's family told me I only won because my SIL wasn't trying her best. I guess being there this year brought back all those sad feelings. I really do need to let it go.
I've decided that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. No presents or major gift expectations. 5-day holiday weekend. My kids REALLY get the gratitude and I love being grateful. It was a good day.

| I had oral surgery today (lower bone and gum graft). I can't do anything that will raise my heart rate. This will cause too much blood flow to the graft area and cause it to come off. I knew this and had planned on this being a rest week.
So lots of stretching and foam rolling. And sleeping in!!!!!

Back in August I had some major right groin/left hamstring (at the insertion point). I've been able to manage it by keeping my running slow. BUT any time I pick up speed or go longer, it totally flares up (I've kept it on the down-low here on FRB because no one likes a whiner). I did PT back in August/September. I went to my sports medicine doctor back at the end of October.
He went into great detail of tendonitis vs tendonosis:
tendonitis - short term inflammation, can be controlled by physical therapy, steriod, and massage.
tendonosis - long term inflammation, treated by surgery, dry needling and PRP
At my first appointment in October, doc gave me a steriod pack (as I had already done a lot of PT). So we decided to do PRP (platelet rich plasma)/dry needling. (We have hit our insurance deductible, so I took advantage).
They took a 60 cc blood sample and spun it down to the good rich plasma. While the blood was spinning for 15 minutes, I had to ice the tendons. Then, they inject Lidocaine into the tendon. They used an ultrasound and injected the plasma into the mad tendon and quirt a small amount of the plasma. Then move to another spot in the tendon...squirt more plasma. Hence the dry needling part of the procedure. During the ultrasound, the doctor mentioned the right hip tendon/left hamstring looked degenerative.
What I didn't realize how invasive the procedure is (they didn't tell me during the last appointment and there is not a lot of internet information). They gave me super Tylenol (and a Lortab....no thanks!!) for the pain. They suggested I don't run for a few weeks (at least a few days)....WHAT!!!! That is a minor detail to forget (I had in my mind this was going to be like a flu shot and I would be running my 10 miles tomorrow). He said I had to determine "return to exercise" regime on my pain level.
This procedure what not what I expected. It is still new and they don't have a lot of research. BUT I really like the idea of using my own blood to to help my recovery (not drugs). It only cost $100 where most places outside of Utah charge $500-$1500 for one injection (and I got 2). I really don't know if it will work. I guess I'm willing to try some "witch craft".
So here is my "poor me" rant.....I feel like I can't train to my potential because I'm always getting injured. I feel like I've been super conservative with increasing my mileage and been diligent with my strength training and stretching. I realize there are "growing pains". I will have run 1700ish miles for 2014 which is almost 250-300 more miles than 2013, Yet I only have 1 half marathong PR. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with my training.

Tim and I are in Park City for the weekend skiing at the Canyons compliments of his work. There are only 2 good runs open right now. But we are going to try Park a City tomorrow and hoping for better conditions.
Left adductor was crazy sore today. I went for a run at our hotel around 2:30. I started slow and eventually got to doing 1 min hard/1 min easy. I stopped to go get a drink and I could feel the adductor seize up. It loosened up won't I started running again. That gives me hope.
Off to Ruth Chris for dinner.....thanks work! I love free vacations!

After the kids went to school, I headed up to Alpine for some new trails. LOVED them...except for when I almost ran right into 4 deer. I was looking down at the ground to make sure I didn't trip and almost ran smack into them. I think they were as startled as I was.
I wish I would have had more time to explore. I need to get over that trails miles don't equal road miles. Great run!

I met Rachel and her Herriman Running crew to run Butterfield Canyon. There were about 30 people this beautiful Christmas Eve morning. I knew the upness of the canyon was going to kick my tail and it did. I was the last person to arrive at the turn around section.
I was able to pick up some speed on the way down the canyon and the last 5 miles. Rachel was kind enough to go slow with me....I always keep her behind!!!! I appreciate her friendship!
I'v been running SO SLOW these past few months that this run was really a push for me. The downhill/flat was around 8:35 min/mile....so I'm glad to know all is not lost with the speed.
I couldn't stay for the running breakfast - we always go swimming as a family on Christmas Eve to help burn off the crazy. It was a great morning!
Off to make soup and rice krispy treats for a family party tonight. Merry Christmas y'all!

My left adductor took awhile to get warmed up. I know my gait totally changes while I hobble for the first few miles.
I went and saw my PT about my left adductor. It is acting like my right one did before I had to get my PRP injections. I felt a bit frustrated while at the PT. I've kinda figured out his way of thinking:
-run every other day (which I have)
-strengthen week muscles (I go to power pump 2x week and usually lift 1x on my own)
-cross train (Ive been skiing twice this week)
-Ive been stretching every night for 20 minutes
SO what gives!!!
