Favorite Running Quotes:
1.
"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.
Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.
A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."
~Nike Poster
2. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
You’ve no doubt heard this. And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape. You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.
But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal. If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.
You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time. And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

JRP
Sweet Rachel met me in the middle of the night to help me through my long run. I think my favorite Rachel saying was while she was turning on her head lamp "It's for the skunks". So reassuring.
We had a wonderful run! I'm so glad that even though she has reached elite status, she will still run with me :). It was fun to catch up on life and have someone to squish snails, run big hills, drink obscene amounts of water, and get super sweaty with. Oh that JRP is humid!
She left around mile 13 and I was sad to see her go. I turned on my iPod and listened to my book and eventually switched to music. The last 3 miles, my legs started to get heavy. I always start to think....how can I go faster and still run 6 more miles. Ughhhh..
I forgot to bring a towel and my car seat needs to be sanitized from all my sweat.
Off to have my 7 years old birthday. I sure hope I can get a nap in sometime today. |

| Nothing! I'm suppose to have a lower mileage week next week. But the following week, I'm going to be traveling with my family. It will be really tricky to do a big mileage week (including a 20 miler) while on vacation. SO, I'm going to do 3 big weeks in a row which means I needed to rest today. This probably makes no sense, but I'm trying to be smart. We'll see if if all turns out. My baby turned 7 today. Sigh....why do they grow up so fast. |

Collette bailed on me this morning because of the rain. So I went back to bed for an hour and ran on the home TM. Legs started out stiff but felt better the longer I ran.
20 minutes PT stuff....groin is getting a bit tight again. It definitely loosed up after the PT stuff. Hope to get another stretching session in tonight.

| I recruited my hairdresser, Emily to join us for the Tuesday Track Club. Emily is a super fast marathoner and just starting to do track workout! We are three ladies strong now!
I was nervous about this workout. My groin was still super tight and I knew speed was going to aggrivate it even more. But I stretched it all night. It was tight this morning, but I was able to finish the workout. I hope I wasn't being dumb.
Today was 8x400. The thought of doing 800's made me want to vomit. It was still a great workout and having another person there breathing down your neck was awesome! My times are getting faster....slowly but surely! Next week we are going to do mile repeats....ughhhhh....

| This summer our kids participated in running camp. We did it through the AF Rec Center and I was able to be one of the coaches. I LOVED working with the kids twice a week and watching them progress. We started each running session with stretching, drills, and a few strength training exercises. Then we would go for a run followed by running games. Today was our last day at camp and we celebrated by having a 1 mile and 2 mile race. All the Barlow kids swept the podium! Abby was the first girl in the 1 mile race with a 7:57: Annie was the first girl in the 2 mile race with a 15:24 (a 4 min PR): Carter came in 2nd in the 2 mile race with a 15:52: Georgia came in 2nd girl in the 2 mile race with a 17:52: I'm so proud of my kids for working so hard all summer! They had great sportsmanship and made their mom proud!! (Shoot...I couldn't get the pictures to copy over!) PM: 3 miles on home TM while waiting for hubby to get home. 17 miles on the gym TM with Kellie. It's been forever since we've run together and it was great to catch up. She is still speedy fast. It definitely made the miles go by faster. I didn't get started until 5:00pm. Groin still very tight. Lots of stretching and foam rolling. Since I timed out the TM several times, I'm guessing my AP was 9:20-9:25. I didn't feel quite as hammered as I normally do! |

| I am at the Kara Goucher running retreat in Napa Valley! I feel very blessed that I was able to attend...it is certainly a luxury! Last night we had a cocktail party and dinner with 50 women from all over the US....all runners of course! Kara was there and as amazing in person as she is on TV. It was fun to meet all sorts of women and learn the reason why they run! This morning we had a Pilates class (not a huge fan) and then headed out for a run with Kara. She ran slow so we could all join her. It was fun to sight see through the city, but there was a lot of stop lights and congestion. Again, I have really enjoyed meeting so many different ladies. After the run, we had a core class, shower then lunch. This afternoon was spent attending different classes. Nutrition, hydration, Being the Best You and a talk by her husband and Tim from Run the Edge. Tonight Sally, the CEO of Oieselle is going to speak....can't wait. This has far exceeded my expectations and I'm so very glad I went. My groin and quad has been super achy though. I'm need to go see the PT when I get home. |

| 5 easy miles through a park in Napa. Oh it was so very beautiful! I ran with some amazing women today...doctors, lawyers, and other very impressive careers. It was so wonderful to hear their life stories! We had a great farewell brunch. Everyone had to share something that they were good at and something "I will do". It was truly inspiring! We spent the afternoon in SF killing time before our flight leaves. It was an amazing weekend and I feel like being a bit better! |

| I got home from the Kara Goucher running retreat one week ago. I came home SO inspired and ready to battle through the last 6 weeks of training. But my hip/groin had been achy for a week. And now it was a hurting hip. I saw my PT on Monday....oh he is a good tool to have in my running toolbox! I explained my recent training and the PT I had done on it. He explained the very grey area of soft tissue stress that can eventually turn into a stress reaction that can turn into a stress fracture. He did a lot of work on it and told me to take off the next 10 days from running. I have to wear an ace bandage around my thigh/stomach to help support the femoral neck. If it feels better, then it was soft tissue...if it doesn't feel better, then it is a stress reaction and requires 6 weeks off (he didn't feel like it was a stress fracture). I came home from the appointment feeling very defeated. I can confidently say that I've taken my vitamins, got enough sleep, lifted weights at least once a week (sometimes more), and been diligent on my stretching and foam rolling. So I went through the anger, depression, guilt, more anger, more depression cycle. I've put in 1.5 years of good, smart training and have had none of the results I've sought after. In my mind, I start to think that maybe my body isn't cut out for qualifying for Boston. Maybe I need to pick a new goal. BUT I DONT WANT to pick a new goal (there goes that vicious cycle again...anger, depression). We went on a family vacation to Moab and that was a good distraction. But my family thinks I am always injured and why am I being so dumb....what am I doing wrong. Blah, blah, blah.... I didn't do any exercising this week except for a hike out to Delicate Arch. It was a good physical and mental break....I got a sinus infection too, so that contributed to the lack of exercising. Hopefully, I will feel better enough to bike and lift tomorrow. School starts too, so I will have more time to cross train. I really hope it is just soft tissue issues. If I can run the marathon in 5 weeks, my only goal is just to finish. |

I'm a much happier gal when I can run... my family can attest to that! I went to my chiropractor yesterday and his massage therapist did some DEEP tissue therapy on my hip, low back, psoas, and adductor. YIKES....that was painful, but it feels significantly better today. Another tool in the running tool box!
I decided to do a short run outside and see how everything felt. The hardest part was my breathing as I'm still shedding my sinus infection. I could feel my hip, but it wasn't painful.

Last Thursday, I went to my chiropractor to have him do some ART on my hip. He had to do something and sent me to his in-house massage therapist. She did some DEEP tissue work all over (including some places the PT hadn't worked on - low back, psoas). Oh my, that was painful. But come Sunday and today, all my hurties hurt just a bit less and I could do my stretches a bit deeper.
I went and saw her again today and have another appointment for later on in the week. I'm starting to feel a glimmer of hope. I also found some great exercises to help the adductor.
6 easy mile on the home treadmill. I could feel the adductor being really tight, but everything else felt better.
On a funny note...my PT had given me an ace bandage to wear around my thigh and stomach. It gave me a terrible rash which gave me a terrible case of the itchies!!! Oh my it itched so bad!! I finally got a cream to help it calm down. I feel like I have the chicken pox!

I've done power pump one other time...I must have forgotten how hard it is!! That class was NO JOKE! My heart rate was through the roof and my muscles were shaking with exhaustion. I couldn't complete all the reps or lift as heavy, but I felt like I got a fantastic workout. I even made a new friend.
Hope I can walk tomorrow!!

Tim and Carter went on a backpacking trip in the Unitas so I ran on my home TM. I was a bit nervous as this was my longest run in 3 weeks. After 45 minutes, my hip started to warm up and felt alright. I kept everything slow. My thigh bruised up a lot after scraping it last night (Josse would be proud!!!). I'm hoping it helped.
Running a long run at home on a Saturday isn't ideal, but the miles were logged. Lots of kids interruptions.
We went up to Sniagrab and I got a new pair of skies and boots for super cheap! I'm thinking about getting a season pass to Sundance...then I can snowshoe and downhill ski. There was even a Karen sighting!!!
