Favorite Running Quotes:
1.
"Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.
Some call it euphoria. Others say it's a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into a elevated state of consciousness, a flash of joy.
A sense of floating as you run. This experience is unique to each of us, but when it happens, you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever. And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you."
~Nike Poster
2. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
You’ve no doubt heard this. And you’ve probably recited it in your mind on a run or at the gym when you’re just beginning to get in shape. You have a goal in sight and this quote brings you back to the current moment.
But the problem is that many runners forget all of the steps between the first one and the goal. If your goal is to run under two hours for the half marathon then you need to be honest about all of the little steps to get to that goal.
You should have goals, but you should take it one step at a time. And you should be honest about the fact that you don’t know how many steps it will take to get there. ~ Vernon Gambetta

| Holy smokes - what a fun race! I certainly wasn't brave enough to wear a "colddddest costume", but enjoy watching everyone else! Here are a few of the highlights: -Driving up to Salt Lake listening to all the best songs from the year/decade (two that particularly stuck out were "Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns and Roses - secretly, I always wanted to be Axel Rose for Halloween AND "Dreeamweaver"). Nothing like a good song to put you in a good running mood. -Seeing the hairy dude in the red speedo and the ladies in the string bikinis (Maybe they weren't highlights, but I had bad dreams because of the hairy dude....) -My race number was 2010. I thought maybe that was good Karma for the year, but then I realized everyone had that number! Definitely not my fastest race, but I was there to enjoy! It is always nice to have a starting point for the year - I want to run every race faster than the next. 1 - 9:10 2 - 9:03 3 - 8:05 .1 - 1.20 (7:52) Average pace - 8:44 Total time: 27:40

| 20 eliptical 2 miles on the stair climber
I'm having a hard day today - maybe even a pity party! Over Thanksgiving, I decided I was going to run my first marathon. On things like that, once I commit - it is go time. I don't turn back. All my best efforts are put forth and very very rarely do I slack. My left ankle has been bothering me for 2 weeks. I should have rested it. I thought I could run through the pain. After doing some internet research (and that is always SO accurate), I think I might have a slight stress fracture. This makes me mad cause gosh darn it - I'm ready to go. Mentally, I'm ready to work hard and hurt after a good workout. I've been icing several times a day, Motrin, an ankle brace - but I think it needs rest. While waiting for the stair climber at the gym, I went on the eliptical - YUCK! What a waste of time. It just bums me out! I'm ready to start racing fast. Last year was my "warm up" after my 4 year "having babies" break! I'm ready to loose my last few baby pounds (I'm 146 and want to be between 125-130) and be fast. Okay - I'm done with my frustration - time to make the best of the situation!

| I decided to beat all the gym fakers and get there at 4:45am (fakers don't get up that early, do they??). All the stair-climbers were occupied when I walked in the door, but by the time I took off my jacket and put on my brace one freed up. My ankle is starting to feel better. I've been wearing my hubby's old school ankle brace and it is really helping. I think taking yesterday off helped too.
I got home earlier than normal from the gym, so I went back to bed for an hour - AWESOME!

This was my first awesome workout of the week! I went to the gym at 4:45am and still had to wait for a stair-climber. I asked the front desk guy about getting more machine - I wasn't the only one who had been complaining. 2.25 miles on elliptical 4 miles on stair climber (35:25 minutes)
My ankle felt great! I really massage it hard last night and the seemed to help a ton!

I was the 5th person in the gym today and got on a stairclimber - HAH! I had people coming up to me the whole time asking when I was going to be done. Unfortunately, there isn't much on TV at 6am on a Saturday morning - "The Bass Masters" is an AWESOME show (NOT!!). I didn't wear the ankle brace today and felt fantastic. I think next week I will run every other day and cross train. So on New Years Eve, on my way to the "Beat the New Year" race, they played the top 100 songs of the year/decade on the radio. I hadn't heard this song in a long time and downloaded it the next day. It helped me endure today on the stairclimber.

6 miles on the stairclimber. 55 minutes I took my kids to the daycare today at the gym - there was a million kids. I know going there isn't their favorite, so I tried to be quick. Aerobicly I felt good, but my ankle was starting to hurt. I'm going to wear the brace today and do low miles tomorrow.

| I went to see a doctor who specialized in sports medicine yesterday - I almost canceled because my ankle was feeling a lot better, but glad I didn't. He was awesome and didn't look at me funny because I was a runner. Actually, he works a lot with the BYU running teams and wish I had the budget that those teams did (they don't seem to sorry about cost!). Nice guy and seemed to know his stuff.
They took an x-ray of my ankle and didn't see any fractures. He said a lot of time they don't see the tiny stress fractures so he wanted to do a bone scan. I felt like I had to coordinate a 3-ring circus trying to get my big kids to school - someone to watch my 2 year old daughter - pick up kids and take to art lessons and someone else to watch my 2 year old. Going to the hospital twice in 3 hours ALONE is tricky. I think I have it all worked out though. Tuesday is the day. So I'm still out for alittle while. He told me to get into the pool and to bike. Sadly, I have a fear of water. Yep - I admit it. The only time I get in a swim suit is to take my kids to swimming lessons and I sit on the side. I don't know how to swim. AT ALL! So I did my version of a back stroke and was breathing hard for 45 minutes. I'm sure I broke all the pool etiquette rules and looked like a wreck. Next time, I'll go to spin. Good news is I got into Grandma's and have a hotel (rooms are hard to find in that little city). Off to wash sheets!

| I totally got my hiney kicked at spin class this morning. I really liked the instructor. He was in his 60's and had a jersey on for a ride across America from 1996-2006. The dude rode across the states - for 10 years in a row! He is tough. I felt that I worked out hard during the class. It is had to compare spinning/swimming to running - I'm sure I am getting a good workout, but how good, I'm not sure! After the spin class I swam for 20 minutes in the pool. I had goggles today and still had no idea what I was doing. I don't know how the athletes swim MILES during the ironman - I would drown! I think between the hour of spin and 20 minutes of swim I could have run 9 miles.

I did 3 miles on the STUPID elliptical. My ankles started to act funny, so I jumped off and finished my last 20 minutes on the bike. I'm not sure why I have such an aversion to the elliptical, but it doesn't suite my fancy :) I'm getting my bone scan this afternoon. I hope all my arrangements don't flake on me for getting kids places or I am swimming up a creek.

CRAP-CRAP-CRAP! The doctor called me - it is fractured - in the ankle AND heel. Arghhh...... I haven't run for 2 weeks and still need to rest it for 6 more weeks. What an inconvenience, but definitely not the end of the world!
This evening I swam 45 minutes and 44 laps in the pool. I tried to swim 2 laps average pace and then pick up speed for 2 laps and repeat. After each 2 fast laps, I was huffing and puffing - it was hard. I felt like I had a good workout.

| I had every intention of working out hard this morning. My two big girls were up all night long. We usually close their door when they sleep, but left it open. Since it was open, they thought it was time to get up. So at 2:47am and 30 minute intervals after that the parade of girls came and woke us up. When my alarm when off at 5:45am, I had no issues about hitting that off button. Oh well.....It was nice to rest my ankle!

| Swim - 25minutes (about 2.5 running miles)
Spin Class - 45 minutes (about 4.5 running miles) I feel so discouraged today. When my doctor called withe my bone scan results, he told me I could swim and bike. That has what I've been doing - I haven't cheated because I know it will only slow down my recovery. But my foot kills today and I think it is from spin class. I feel like I keep taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Running always gives me such a high. I am addicted and going through such serious withdrawals. I need it and I am a long way from getting it. I'm just having a downer of a day. Plus, I'm really tired. On the days, when I know I am getting up super early (5am), I always wake up in the middle of the night fearful that I have slept through my alarm. Silly - I know. I need to find 4 parents to help with a class party - those phone calls are SO not fun! No one ever wants to volunteer!

The pool temperature was back to normal - hooray! I felt really strong today while swimming - I tried to visualize my favorite runs while I counted ceiling tiles during the swim. I know this may sound silly, but I STILL cannot believe that I am swimming (even if it is only the back stroke). My fear of water is slowly not becoming a fear. The weigh in today was 142lbs - down 2 lbs. I was alittle surprised because I made a big batch of cookies last night for my kids and snarfed down WAY too many. I was chatting with a friend about P90x - anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it worth it?

60 minutes aqua running
I went to the rec center tonight (my regular gym doesn't have a deep-end pool) to do some aqua jogging instead of regular swimming. Wow - that is really hard! I really liked it and plan to do it more often. It was fun to watch all the little kids in swim lessons (I felt like I needed to join them) and it kept my mind occupied. Kelli-I'll have to weigh in tomorrow morning. I didn't know where the scale was at the rec center. Yesterday I was 142. |

I decided to take it easy today and recover. I think I will go back to the rec center tomorrow and do a "long run" aqua style! Kelli-I weighed in at 141.8lbs (down .2 from Wednesday). The weekend is coming up which usually means extra treats - I've got to be careful!

I was SO not excited to go to the gym today. Hubby was camping with the scouts and I kept procrastinating and procrastinating. But I did go and was SO glad I did! I think after my pool run on Thursday, my body thought this was a cake walk. Each lap, I kept getting faster and faster. I was breathing hard (really hard in some areas) and now I'm feeling alittle bit heavy (like after a good workout). I'm seriously considering doing a tri - I just need to get a bike.

I went to the rec center again this morning to swim in the deep end of the pool. The swim team was there practicing (arghh...5:00am for a swim team practice is early!) and lots of retired folks and me. I aqua-ran for an hour. It didn't seem as hard as it did last time nor am I as sore. Maybe I am getting better? Probably not!

| It's so hard to figure how many running miles a swim/aqua jog is - hard to judge effort. I *think* I swam about 6.5 running miles. 50 minutes - 66 laps - just over a mile They were doing an water aerobics class this morning, so there was only 1 lane open at the pool. Some guy asked if he could share the lane - sure, no problem. *I really don't know anything about swimming* but this guy had the messiest swim stroke ever! Every time he went by, a flood of water swooshed over my face (I'm doing the back stroke). No other swimmer has done that while sharing a lane. It was like he was slapping the water with his palm. I swam faster just to get done and get out of there!

| I totally slept in the morning and it was FANTASTIC! I decided to try the recumbent (sp?) bike tonight. My ankle was so sore after the spin classes a week ago - I guess the pressure of getting out of the saddle wasn't good for the ankle. I rode for 30 minutes and watched the news. I noticed the stair climber was open and thought I would try it for 10 minutes (or quit sooner if I felt any pain). I did it and no pain. Man that felt good - it gave me a ray of hope! I feel like I can get as good of a workout on the stairclimber as I do when I run. I finished up with 2 more miles on the bike. The strange thing about tonight's workout: 1. I was sweating (you don't do that in the pool) 2. I got to listen to music (definitely not in the pool) I'm going to try the stair climber again on Monday for 10 minutes again. Slowly build my way back up. Back to the pool tomorrow. |

| I went to the rec center tonight to do a pool run. It was crazy busy as usual. This time (since I knew I was going to be there awhile), I wore a hat and put my I-pod under it. I TOTALLY looked like a dork, but I didn't care because I had tunes! I did a few intervals tonight just to see what it felt like in the pool (30 second rest in between each one): 0:30, 1:00, 1:30, 1:30, 3:30 - then swim team practice was over and they took the big clock away. I ran a total of 75 minutes. I wanted to do an hour and 20 minutes but had to pee so bad I was going to wet my pants - why does swimming make you need to pee?

I kept thinking 20 laps done - 80 more to go - urghhh..... that is a long way! And my arms were very tired. But the last 40 laps or so were faster and stronger probably because I knew I was on the homeward stretch. I haven't really biked since my hubby took me to Moab shortly after we were married to "go on a little ride". When we got there, I see this "World Class Biking" sign. I rode his bike and the frame is too big for me. But I did have a good ride and I finally used my HRM. I am really tired and am going to take a nap. I had In - n - Out for lunch and did not feel the least big guilty today :)

| It is always hard to get out of bed on Monday mornings. The pool water seems colder too! I was excited about today's workout because it was only 64 laps (1 mile) and not 96 laps (1.5 miles) like Saturday's. It seemed SO easy. I'm going to try to start to put my face in the water more. I'm not sure why I have such a fear (I was water skiiing as kid and my contacts swam away and I couldn't see - maybe that is it). But I am trusting my son's goggles and am going to try the front crawl. Baby steps. 64 laps - 1 miles - 50 minutes (about 6 running miles)

I had a hard time focusing this morning (keeping up the speed, how many sets I was doing) and I was having problems with my ipod. I will admit, I am getting "bored" with aqua running. I will continue to do it because I want to continue to train, I just hope it is for nothing! Aqua run (45 minutes - 5 running miles) 5 min warm up 11x2:30 min 5 min cool down No bike ride today (Tim has YM) or yesterday (it was raining yesterday and I still not that comfortable on a bike)

| No workout today! Bummer....maybe! I taught my whole wheat bread class and other things you can make with the bread dough. It was a semi-ok turnout, but lots of good treats (cinnamon rolls, soft pretzels, pizzas, taco bakes, and bread). I am NOT going to weigh in tomorrow. I have to give my body a few days to loose all the bread I've eaten tonight. Off to bed!

I'm officially 6 of my 8 weeks for stress fracture recovery (I will still have another 4-5 weeks of comeback). I still don't know if I will be able to get ready in time for my marathon in June. My marathon expectation has dramatically dropped to "I just want to finish". I don't even care about a time. Time will tell!

I've been working on memory boxes and came across this old Nike poster from high school: "Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people.

I felt like I was dodging little kids doing swim lessons, swim team, folks there to swim laps, and teenagers hanging out. Pool run: 5 min warm up 12x2:30 minutes (30 sec recovery) 5 min cool down Swim: 40 minutes (I have no idea how many laps - I was having to dodge lots of little bodies). Felt good, but the ankle is still a bit achy.

It felt good, but I didn't want to push my luck. Today, my 4 kids official ate 1 ton of food - I swear it! 30 minutes after breakfast, they were complaining of being hunger. They ate HUGE adult sized portions of left over from last night, plus a fruit for lunch. Then tonigh,t there was NOT a drop of food left. They must be going through a grow spurt. This "spurt" is going to cost me a fortune in food :)

5 min warm up and cool down 1 min - 2 min - 3 min - 4 min - 5 min - 4 min - 3 min - 2 min - 1 min - 1 min - 2 min (30 sec recovery) I met calliej at the pool this morning (I'm a lucky duck because she is my cousin). I can always count on her for a good time. She even braved wearing a hat with an Ipod - she totally looked cool. It was awesome to have a workout buddy. I miss that - not many people want to pool run :) So in my "deep cleaning" mode, I found my old track and cross country stuff (I think I already mentioned that). During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (I was living in ATL and was entering my senior year in high school), I was an "apparel carrier" for the USA track trials and the Olympic track events. So I carried all the stinky and smelly warm up clothes in a "shopping basket" from the starting line to the finish line. It was AMAZING as you can imagine (I could probably write a book on all the neat stuff I saw, but not today!). So one day, an official asked if anyone liked BYU. I quickly raised my hand. He threw me Frank Fredricks BYU jersey; it was still stinky. I found the old BYU jersey, my shopping basket and a few other Olympic memorabilia. I will make one more post later about my thoughts on the Olympic games (past and present).

I was a rock star and told Callie to meet at 6:30 - BUT the gym didn't open until 7:00am. I kept waking up last night because I thought I had missed my alarm.
I could REALLY get used to have a pool buddy! My arms were super tired during the 8x5min and my whole body felt like lead during the 45's. Hooray for being over!

I had a hard time being motivated during class. It is Monday and I am tired. I was going to babysit 10 million kids, and it is a early out day at school. Just having a hard time getting excited! But now all the kids are gone, workout is done, and it is beautiful outside and we are going to play after school!

| I dutifully hit snooze this morning and didn't regret one minute of the extra 2.5 hours of sleep! I worked out after hubby got home from work.
Elliptical - 1.5 miles (I went 5 minutes longer than last time and NO ankle issues - YAY!!)
Bike (20 minutes) - 2 miles Aqua run - 4.8 miles (48 minutes)
5 min warm up 2 sets of 2:30sec (30 sec recovery) (2 min recovery between sets) 5 min cool down I'd better get a move on my favorite part of the Olympics since they are over (though I didn't watch much, I more referring to the general theme of the Olympics): 1. I love to watch the athletes raise their arms when they cross the finish line (and to see the expression on their face). To me, this is the compilation of of years of training (physical and mental) and overcoming beasts (because they all have them). The "crossing the finish line" is the moment that they have been envisioning during all the training session. It is glory!
2. Singing the national anthem. This is the second "glory". To know you are the very best athlete in your country, much less the Olympic games, is a dream many dream of but few accomplish. I love to see them sing it and see the tears roll down their face (I'm sure many tears were spent getting to that podium).
3. Watching the "this is where they have come from" video clips. I love the music they always play. I love seeing them struggle and overcome. I hope someday to have my own video clip. Done. |

I am 8 weeks RECOVERED today (it sounds like I need to be at an AA meeting)! Hip hip hooray! It could mean nothing or it could mean everything! I've been following Pete Pfitzinger's aqua running schedule and now I am going to following his "Returning from injury" program. I want to do this right and not re-injury and make a stupid mistake. Pfitzinger says a good test to see if you are ready to run is to walk briskly for an hour. If you don't have any pain, then you can SLOWLY come back. Tonight was my walk (and walking on a treadmill for an hour is NOT AWESOME!!!). Luckily I did find a good show in HGTV. I was overly aware of any sign my body was giving me. My knees started to ache and I even got a side ache. Those subsided after a few minutes. I felt clumsy too. It's been a while since I've been on the milly!
My heel was a bit sore - but sometimes I find that if I have been on my feet all day, they will be sore. I am going to try to stay off my feet for the next few days.
But nothing from my ankle. Notta - zero - zilch - NOTHING!!! I'm not getting too excited yet; I am pool running and swimming for the rest of the week. If I still feel good, then I will start the recovery program. The best part of the workout tonight is: NO SWIMMING SUIT!!
Walk on treadmill at 4.1mph - 1 hour - 4 miles (6 running miles) 30 minute bike ride (3 running miles)

I haven't been doing it because I don't feel very comfortable stretching at the pool in a wet suit and when I get home life gets crazy. I can tell that I haven't been stretching and I am tight tight tight! Does shoveling the driveway with my kids count as miles? Off to build another snow fort!

| I met Callie at the rec center today. It is always nice to have a friendly face meet you at 5:15am! I was REALLY really nervous to start my "comeback" today. I thought for sure, I would refracture it or break it from being clumsy on the treadmill. Just nerves!
My ankle feels fantastic (no pain), but my heel was still achy. Before my stress fractures, my feet always ached at the end of the day from being on them all day long. So I'm not sure if this is injury or normal life.
Walk 10 min Run 5 min Walk 5 min Run 5 min Cool down Then off to the pool. I only had 25 minutes till needed to be home. So I swam and was on my merry way. I will rest for 2 days then run on it again!

| Met Callie at the rec this morning and jumped into an ice-pond of a pool. Brrr..... I admit, I was feeling a bit grumpy. My heels were feeling so sore yesterday. I rubbed and rubbed them in hopes to rub out all the soreness (which I think irritated it). I went and got some heel pads and some KT tape. I was feeling sorry for myself all evening. When I got up this morning, they were still a bit achy after being off them all night. But they felt good during the pool and have felt much better today. Who knows! I think I am going to wait an extra day or two till I run on them again.

| What a fantastic weekend! On Thursday night, Tim and I went to see the comedian Brian Regan. I'm not really into comedians - occasionally, I will watch a Seinfeld episode and chuckle, but that is the extent of it. I had low expectations - I had bought the tickets for Tim's Christmas present. He loves Brian! It really was funny. There were a few jokes where I did have tears rolling down my face. One of the funny parts of the evening is that Brian is constantly laughing at himself during the entire show. It was very clean and we had a great night. Friday night, we went to see the "Blind Side" at the dollar movies. OUTSTANDING! Sandra Bullock did a great job. After the movie, I said to my husband, I hope that our kids are interested in a sport. I don't even care if it is running, just something where they feel like they belong; are a part of a "team" (being active is an added bonus too). Saturday morning, the kids and I went to cheer on Tim at the Rex Lee 5K. Since he is not a blogger here, I will give his report. His work sponsored the employees. We saw him shortly after the start and cheered him on at the finish. He ran a 30 minutes and change. He wore too many clothes and was roasting. He ran with some of his work buddies. I love cheering on runners (I would have really liked to run, but it is the next best thing). I will post the picture of the race once I figure out how to do it :) I LOVE the BYU track. I flew out to meet Coach Shane during my junior year in high school. It was a turning point in my life and running career. It was fun to see it again. Today's workout was okay. I did 45 minutes on the stair climber (5.25 miles). My ankle was feeling a bit achy, so I thought I would get in the pool to swim. Unfortunately, the pool was like 25 degrees. Brrrrr..... I only did 350 meters (10 minutes) and had to jump into the hot tub to get my blood moving again. I am suppose to run on my ankle to tomorrow, but am going to wait until Monday. I'm getting excited, but I think I still have a long road ahead. |

So onto another "running day". 3 min walk 7 min run 3 min walk 7 min run 3 min walk 7 min run 5 min cool down Wowzer, I feel out of shape. I still feel clumsy, slow, and mostly out of shape. I had a few minutes after the run/walk till I needed to be home. I was planning on doing the elliptical, but opted for stretching. It was probably the best part of the workout. I need to get back into the habit!

| So my kids didn't catch a leprechaun in their trap. What a bummer! He did leave them a note and their 4 pennies (i.e. pot of gold). It was a beautiful day outside! So while my big kids went to a birthday party and my whippersnapper went on a date with dad, I worked out! 11.33 mile bike ride (54:33 minutes). Man, I am SO SO slow on a bike. I am going to get SMOKED in the mini sprint during the biking section. But I did enjoy the ride, my newly downloaded songs on the Ipod, and the warmer weather. The last running entry on my Garmin was January 4. Urghhhh..... Today, I walked 2 min - 8 min run. The program said to do 3 of these sets. I didn't feel quite as clumsy, but it still me awhile to get into the running mojo. I ran 3.25 miles - 30:18. My splits were 9:17, 9:22, 9:26, 9:37 (last .25). AP - 9:23. So I was slow, but I don't even care because I was running. My ankle felt great. I felt like I really worked out. A good ego boost!

I was short on time tonight, so I made the best of the situation on the stair climber. I only had 45 minutes and had to cut out my swim. I felt so great (mentally and physically). The stair climber said I did 5 miles. I can't believe how sore I am from my bike ride yesterday. I totally need to do it more often! Must stretch soon!
Off to sew my 3 girls Easter dresses. Urghhhh....I do this every year. By the time I finish the first one, I think to myself "I still have 2 MORE dresses to make". This is going to be the final year - I'm going to buy them in 2011. Done.

| Wowzer! I went to the Timp Mini Sprint this morning at the AF rec center. It was AWESOME! I have such a new found appreciation for those athletes. Talk about HARD CORE. The announcer said many were getting ready for the St George Ironman in May.
Those poor swimmers came booking out of the pool soaking wet (and barefoot). There was steam coming off of them it was so cold. I met Missy today and saw her fancy smancy bike. She looked superfly! She did an amazing job and was WICKED fast. Hip hip hooray for her awesome race! My ankle felt sore this morning, so I pouted, moaned, and felt sorry for myself. After working in my garden all day, I felt better (I planted a few extra raspberry bushes, carrots, onions, spinich, lettuce, broccoli, and peas. I trimmed up my strawberries. I'm ready for some fresh veggies) I went for a bike ride this evening and am really glad I did (I ate way too many Butterfinger Easter eggs).

| I swam 1600 meters this morning. Usually when I swim, I look at the clock when I jump in the pool and look at it again when I hop out to figure out my time. Using that method, I swim 1600 meters in 52 minutes. Today, I wore my watch and swam it in 44:04 minutes. I like my watch methods lots better :) I wanted to see what my 350 meter splits were (350 M is the swim length for the mini sprint I signed up for last week...it is gonna kick my trash!!!!). 1 - 350M 9:28 2 - 350M - 9:41 3 - 350M - 9:39 A few rest laps 4 - 350M - 9:20 Now I have something to work off of. I took a very small dose of Children's Benedryl and I felt hung over all of today. But I had to get outside and kinda of enjoy the pollenly air. My ride was slow (had to stop lots to blow my nose). I am getting more comfortable on a bike and "bike butt" isn't so bothersome. Ankle feels better; I'm hoping by Monday, I can do a run/walk.

It has been a weekend of stinkiness. This is why: 1. One daughter with a case of the throw-ups and squirts. 'Nuff said. 2. I went to see the orthopedic sports medicine doctor as to why my ankle was still hurting after I did everything he said. His reply, "it still needs more time to heal". Sweet (feel the sarcasm)! So I just spent $45 buck-o-roos on the mini tri sprint and I may not even be able to run the 3 miles (it's only 3 miles for pete's sake). So I have to stay off it for a total of 12 weeks (I started to run on it at 8 weeks per his instructions). So hopefully the first or second week of April I can slowly come back (again). It is hard when your mind is ready, but your body isn't. 3. I went and rode the tri bike course today and totally got my "arse" trashed. WOW that was a HUMONGOUS hill (twice). I couldn't make it all the way up (even with a good song on). I was about 2/3 of the way up and my legs and lungs were on fire. I am going to ride it again with my hubby on this week so he can give me a few pointers. 4. I have had it up to HERE with my kids saying potty words. I had 2 girls sent to bed early (with no bath - can do that in the morning). Mom's not taking it any more. Plus, while we went to look for new bikes, they were CRAZY (if you can imagine 3 - 5 year olds being out-of-control in a store full of bikes). I have had it with all of them. "FOR SALE - CHEAP!!!"
Stinkiness sums it up!

| I played the BEST April Fool's joke on my family. We announced that we were having another baby (IF we have another baby, it's gonna be awhile - A LONG WHILE) via email. Everyone fell for it hook line and sinker! It was awesome! (Just to re-clarify, we are NOT PREGNANT)!!!
It's been a hard week for me. After going to the doctor last week and being told I need to let my ankle heal for a few more weeks, I totally felt depressed and lacked motivation. Plus all this crummy weather and barfing kids haven't helped. I did go to spin class this morning and felt great! I am even sore (I love that feeling). I really loved the teacher and she had great music. Some girl walked in 30 minutes after the class started (the class was completely full) and asked the instructor if she could use her bike. Urgh.... Then she was hardly biking. Gently peddling! I thought to myself, "Who do you think you are"? She really bugged! The St George Marathon registration just opened and I had planned on running it. This would be my first marathon. But I am still undecided. It seems like the past 2 races I've registered for I haven't been able to run due to the stress fracture. I feel like I am jinxing myself. So I guess I am looking for some advice. I know I can be completely ready to run Hobble Creek 1/2 marathon and Provo 1/2, but I am worried that I can't be ready (really ready) for St. George. Any advice? Sorry to be a whiner tonight - too much Easter candy.

I weighed myself this morning and I the heaviest I've ever been (except while pregnant). I am really disappointed. Yes, I want to the lose a few pounds, but I really want to make a life style change. Hope I don't die doing the P90X :)

| I just got back from NYC this early, early morning! It was awesome to see the warm sun shining in UT! I think I could live in that city. I LOVE IT. Though it is not a very kid-friendly city, I still adore it! I was able to work out Monday and Tuesday in the posh hotel gym. WOW - they had state-of-the art everything! I lifted and did lots of core and rode the bike. I walked SO many miles around the city, I didn't worry about cardio. My ankle was so sore by the end of the second walking day. One fun tid-bit - I boarded the plane to NYC with Val Kilmer (he was totally trashed). It is always fun to go away, but it is always fun to come home. I got lots of love and cuddles this morning. I don't think I will be working out today....too much cleaning up and laundry!

This is a BIG SHOUT OUT to my hubby (who doesn't blog here, but I'm going to report anyway)! He did the Telos Tri Mini Sprint today and did a personal best! I am so proud of him! Even though I was registered to do the tri, I couldn't because of my stress fractures. I was sad and had a short pity party, but I LOVED being able to cheer on all the atheletes!
Another BIG SHOUT OUT to Missy who swept the ladies division! She is amazing (super muscles too)!
Tim borrowed a SWEET bike for the race and I had to take it for a spin this afternoon. WOW - I can't believe the difference from his mountain bike. I picked a route with BIG hills (I need to start thinking about the November Telos) and thoroughly enjoyed my ride! 10.16 miles in 48:16 minutes

Feeling a bit frustrated about my stress fracture in my ankle (since I should have been recovered at the end of March), I made an appointment with a podiatrist (last doc was a sports medicine specialist). They took a digital x-ray and it showed there were TWO stress fractures in my ankle. Previous doctor told me only 1. He said that biking was not a good choice of exercise - still stress on the ankle (so all the biking I was doing made it worse). I'm down to swimming and pool running. Plus, he put me in a boot for 4 weeks. Oh well! I'm hoping the boot will stabilize it enough, so it won't hurt. One day at a time! On a positive note, I found this AWESOME website that sells jewelry for runners. It is FANTASTIC! http://thesilvermaple.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=9&zenid=ot5ef6gp1ltgrqsecdt2hd7eq7 I hope to get a pool run in sometime today!

| No workouts for me. I guess, I just really want to get better and am doing nothing to aggravate my ankle. It stinks being a lazy bum......It does feel better (but maybe it is just being in a boot). 3 more weeks till my next appointment (hopefully to get clearance to start back).
I've been trying to make some running goals for next year and want to know what is your favorite marathon in the US (can definitely be outside of Utah). I need to have something bigger to look forward to - having nothing to look forward to is driving me bonkers. I've maybe been thinking Big Sur?

I struggled a lot last week mentally - I'm ready to rock, but there is no running rockin' to be had. Hence the swim today - I had to do something before I went crazy. Plus, I had some smarty pants make a rude comment about my not running. Lots of lessons to learn!
My sweet hubby keeps reminding that I need to be patient and take into consideration that I've only been in a boot for 2 weeks. I sure am jealous of all you running out there :)

After TOO MANY days of not exercising, I feel yucky! 18 weeks of a stress fracture.

| Wow - what a great day! I went to a new foot doctor who did an MRI. The results came back that the fracture has healed and I can SLOWLY come back. The tendon that supports my ankle is still very weak, so I have some physical therapy to help strengthen it. He also gave me a small brace to wear while I work out. While we were talking on the phone, I took off the boot and put it in the back of my closet - hopefully never to see it again! I went for a great bike ride today - it was definitely slow, but I was so happy to be moving and huffing and puffing that I didn't care! 9.12 miles in 54:12 minutes Then I went to the gym for a swim. 30 laps in 21:53 I feel like this mental load has been lifted. I still have a few weeks till I can run on it, but I am excited to be moving and the end is in sight.

| Yesterday was the last day of school! To celebrate, we took the kids up to a hotel in Salt Lake (it had a pool and a soda fountain machine), we played lots of games, watched a movie, rode Trax, and toured Temple Square (again). It was fun to have a change of scenery and have good quality time with the kids without the distractions of home. When we got home, I went for a bike ride. I am SO SO SO slow. I was totally passed by other bikers today. Urghhh.... I think most of the problem is the bike - I am riding my hubby's OLD OLD mountain bike. It is so heavy. I've been saving my pennies and hope by the end of the summer, I will be riding a feather-weight. Regardless, it felt great to get out and ride. My ankle feels SO much better and stronger. I am hoping by next week, I can start to run alittle. For all you bike owners - what kind of road bike do you have? Any suggestions? 55:54 - 10.85 miles

I went scouting to find new trails to ride with my son. He recently got a new bike and we have been going on a lot of little rides. He's fast and I have been working with him on "up and down" on the BIG HILLS. It is so fun to be able to do stuff like this with him. I was up at 5am this morning walking the 'hood. We had lots of activities tonight and I wanted to get a workout in. Though it was torturous to drag my hiney out of bed, I really enjoyed my walk. The air smelled SO clean after our big rainstorm last night. Though it was quiet from cars and such, the birds seemed extra loud. The sunrise was an unbelievable pink against the super green mountains. I was reminded why I love getting up before the world gets crazy. Non-the-less, I am discouraged that I am unable to run more (1 minute here and 1 minute there). All my running friends are RUNNING - racing too. And I am walking. Urghhh.... The awesome part of the workout was seeing a young man that lives 3 house down the street. 3 years ago he had a massive stroke and was not expected to live. But alas, he has and has made major improvements. His left side is still very weak. He is going to be walking a half marathon soon and is trying to train for it. His parents signed him up at the gym and got him a personal trainer so he could be strong enough. What a great kid (and great parents)!

I lifted this morning before spin (legs). Spin Had a daycare lady come get me early from class. My Peachy had tripped on a toy and busted her lip open. Off to the doctor office and then the ER. They told me she would probably be put to sleep since she is so young (2) and would be wiggley while they did the stitches. But she was a CHAMP and took the local numbing and didn't move. She thinks her hospital bracelet is cool. Hooray for my good friend who took my big kids during our brief hospital trip.
Thankfully, this has been our very first trip to the ER and it was only stitches.

10 min walk before spin (2x1min run). Spin was hard. We are celebrating 6 years old at this house. The most important
celebration is the fact that Tim and I survived 6 years of raising 4
kids. Yay....we made it another year!
The excitement level has been through the roof today. We started by
decorating cupcakes. Love that sugar high at 8 am! They turned out
really cute:
We had a few melt-downs today (some of us have a hard time handling all
the excitement - can you guess who?).
Off to the roller skating rink we go! They allow the kids to ride
scooters (and roller skates) and they had inflatables to jump on. 25 kids, pitchers and pitchers of lemonade, great friends, round and
round the roller rink, lots of presents, tired Mom and Dad - a great way
to celebrate 6!

Awhile back I took my kids to an art class in Pleasant Grove. We drove up the GIGANTIC hill (450 ft ascent) by Pleasant Grove High School (200 South) and I thought to myself, "I would love to see if I could ride this hill someday". I DID IT TODAY and lived to tell about it. From the bottom to the top is 2 miles (straight up hill). So I rode to the top, then rode down .5 mile onto a side street and rode back up that side hill then back up to the top, then down/up the side street. It took me about 2 minutes to ride down the entire thing. I had to stop a few times to get water, but next time I do it my goal is to ride it straight up - no stops (and start at my house and ride to the base).
Hooray for a little self confidence on a bike!

| I rode over to my new favorite Pleasant Grove High School Hill (about 3.5 miles from my house). I had a hard time getting motivated - I was tired and was starting to feel the aches of a cold coming on. I rode the hill twice. After the first up/down, I parked my bike and ran for 2 minutes. Then back up the hill and down it. I almost hit a stupid truck who made a quick turn with no blinker on the way down. On the way back home, I rode another semi-big hill and it seemed effortless compared to the GIANT!
When I got home, I ran another 2 minutes. I took my son on a bike ride for his Super Saturday. We did alittle off-road and that freaked him out a little! We also saw a really big snake - YUCK! 1:23 - 12.75 miles

When I was turning out of the parking lot, I noticed 2 bikers heading up. I peddled my heart out, but they caught me at the end (granted it was my 2nd time up the hill). Spin class (legs were definitely sore from all the spin) 20 minutes on the elliptical (little nervous on how my ankle would feel - we will see) 5.5 mile bike ride ON MY NEW BIKE!!!! Hip hip hooray!
I've been having a mental breakdown. Yep, I'm crazy. I'm not sure if it is a "mid-summer-too many kids home-really hot" syndrome or what. This past week, I noticed myself becoming irritable quickly, grumpy, and unhappy. I guess I didn't realize how badly I need my physical outlet (I do workout all the time, but I think I need to workout harder or longer or differently or maybe just go to Hawaii). I have to have a really hard workout to get it all out. I have to leave my stress on the road, bike or somewhere, because if I don't I AM GONNA LOSE IT! I was planning on getting a new bike for my birthday (in September) and realized that if I got it then, I would only be able to ride for 2 months. So I got it early (Thanks Tim!) I thought I was going to have to order it, but they have my size in stock. Hooray for the really nice people who answer all my dumb questions and didn't look at me weird. It is a really low-level/entry level bike. But $13,000 wasn't in my budget to get a Lance Armstrong Trek bike (that is what the sales guy Lance's bike costs - HE HAS 4 OF THEM!!!) I was nervous about the clip-in peddles, but they worked out great. What a difference it makes! Here's to speedy miles!

12.95 miles - 1:06 Today was a big day - I rode Suncrest. You know when you have a big speed workout or a long run coming up and you can't sleep because of the anticipation. That was me last night. I drove the course yesterday to see if I was crazy for doing it. Today, I started at the Smiths off Highland Highway and biked up to the little grocery store on top of Suncrest. I think the elevation change is 1500 feet (correct me if I am wrong). 5 miles up and 5 miles down. I think I was more scared to come down. I wish I could record my thoughts during that ride. Doubt to pain to exhilaration to pain to excitement. I didn't go fast, but I rode the entire way and didn't stop. I texted my hubby at the top - "I did it. No stops. All the way". I wish I had a camera. I felt really good when I was done, so I rode around the neighborhoods my the Smiths. There was this HUGE downhill gully to an uphill. I felt so great going up and down - so I turned around to do it again. After going down and heading back up, my gears got stuck. I couldn't peddle and crashed. My first crash. I'm grateful there wasn't any cars coming. I had a car stop (they were going the other direction) and ask if I was ok (hooray for nice people in the world). I had to walk up the hill because it was so steep I couldn't get going again. I learned a lot from this ride. I CAN DO HARD THINGS. Next time I do Suncrest, there will be more speed.

| 54:27 - 12.95 miles I was really excited about tonight's ride - overcast and cooler. I rode up a semi-large hill tonight and it seemed like a piece of cake compared to what I have been riding. I feel so much more comfortable riding, shifting gears, and getting up those hills. Unfortunately, halfway into the ride, it started to rain. I was nervous about the slick roads and sliding out when I brake. It took it really slow home. Glad I didn't die :)

Another great ride on my new bike "Boston". I finished the ride I wanted to do yesterday. I need to get some padded bike shorts, my hiney is starting to hurt beyond the regular bike butt. Cooler weather and a bit overcast. I need to learn how to ride faster on a flat road. I can powerhouse-it up the hills and down hills, but just seem to stroll on the flats. Lots to practice.

RUNNING 1.71 miles - 21:32 minutes (3x2min runs)
RIDING 16.96 miles- 1:27 I rode the Alpine Loop tonight. This was a big ride for me tonight - biggest climb and farthest distance. I was nervous because the canyon road is so narrow and there can be a lot of traffic. My hubby made me put a note in the pocket of my shorts, so if I got hit, someone would know who I was :) I parked just before the entrance to the canyon (I was debating whether I should ride over to the canyon and am really glad I drove). The ride is very long, slow, and gradual uphill. They had repaved part of the road and had the speed bumps on the side. So I was trying to stay off that, but not be too far into the road. I'm not that coordinated.
The views were unbelievable - so much better than in a car. I smelled a lot of campfires too - yummy! I got to the Timpanooke turnoff and thought that I had reached the top (or was close to it). I never pay that much attention when I am driving it. Come to find out the summit is 11 miles up and I only went 8.6 miles up - SO CLOSE BUT SO FAR AWAY. If I had known, I'm still not sure if I could have made it. My legs were spent. On the way down, my hand were cramping from holding the brakes so tight. It was such a fast downhill - sharp turns. A car followed me down for awhile and I was really grateful!
When I was done, I walked/ran on the Cedar Hill Golf Course trail. There were way too many snakes, gophers and creepy crawlies for my taste. I hope I can walk tomorrow!

| 21.30 miles 1:35 This has been my longest ride yet. I received an email from the store I bought my bike at about a group ride. I was really nervous about going. I don't know any biking lingo and am still very much a beginner. But I wanted to learn, so I went. What FANTASTIC, nice, non-judgemental people! They had employees ride up front, in the middle, and someone bringing up the end. We rode from the store up Suncrest and back. What a great ride.
I ended up being near the middle-end of the group (but not last - yessssss!). I learned a lot about bike etiquette, bike safety, how to get out of the saddle properly, shifting gears, etc. The cute gal I rode with was so nice and helpful! But man, my hiney is sore!

WALK/RUN - 3.35 Miles - 39:33 minutes (walk 8 minutes, run 2 minutes)
BIKE - 11.74miles - 50:30 minutes (PG High School hill) I can't tell you how glorious it was to run 8 minutes today. Unbelievable! My ankle has been feeling really good. I've been doing a lot of extra exercises, icing and wearing my brace around the house. Crossing my fingers
So my sweet SIL and her family has moved back to UT to attend MBA school. She is a hard core runner too. We even met and raced against each other at a high school national meet (though we didn't know each other). We took the kids bowling yesterday and were talking about "puke zone". No one, except runners or hard core athletes, understand what that phrase really means. I love her and it is been really difficult not to be able to run with her. It has always been our dream to live by each other and train together and I can't. It has been eating me alive. I have really had to put "life" into perspective lately. Onto happier notes: My Peachy turned 3 this week. Man we love this girl!

BIKE - 22.12 miles 1:59:18 I rode to the SUMMIT of Alpine Loop tonight. The weather was fantastic - overcast, breezy and coming down the canyon it was darn-right COLD. The last 2-3 miles were not hard cycling, but hard mentally. I was getting tired and the time/miles just seem to drag on. Plus I was trying to work out a few things in my mind from the day. I passed a lady coming up the mountain - that is always good for the ego! |

BIKE - 17.26 Miles 1:31 hours I rode part of the Alpine Loop today and it kicked my tail. I didn't decide before-hand what I wanted out of this workout and I let the "hard" win me over. I didn't make it to the top and turned around at the Timpanooke turnoff. My legs were spent - I didn't do a lot of biking this week (we had a lot going on) and I could tell. There were SO many riders going up the canyon this morning. Hard-core riders too! They all passed me going up and coming down - that is hard on the ego :)
My ankle has been bothering me a bit and I've been a bit grumpy about it. I got my stress fracture back in December and it is the end of August....urghhhhh! As I walked up to my front door after my workout, I looked at my watch and it said 4:39am. I had a puking kid all night. Why do stomachs need to rid their contents in the middle of the night? So by 3:45 am, I couldn't sleep anymore so I hit the dark and loney road (the gym doesn't open till 4:30am). I was a little nervous since it was so dark. I was VERY aware of my surroundings and noises. But it was cool and quiet. I did a bunch of ankle exercises on my front porch, took a shower and crawled back into bed. Hubby had brought Pukey into our bed (I have a firm NO KIDS IN BED rule). She was still though. I slept some but am still really tired. Hoping to get a ride in when hubby gets home from work. NO MORE PUKING KIDS! (on a side note, ankle does feel good today...still too early to get excited). PM - bike ride. I had HUGE intentions on going for a long ride tonight - I even had some extra time. But 19:29 minutes into my ride, I got a flat. I took off my tool kit when I had my bike tuned up last week and never put it back on. So my sweet hubby and all the kids came to pick me up. So much for a long ride......

But he didn't wake up in the middle of the night and when he came down this morning, he asked what was for breakfast. I love the pukes! I had a really good workout this morning (except that the gym was playing Wizard of Oz in the Cardio Cinema room - come on!!!). I had no pain in my ankle and haven't for the past few days. I'm still not calling it good, but it is definitely getting into the range. No bike ride tonight - I'm going to cheer my puker at his soccer game!

So I went to a power pump class - first time ever. That was some tough stuff for a wimp like me! My whole body is sore - head to toe! But I'm going to shoot for twice a week with the weights - we'll see how it rolls. (no cool videos like Burts though)
I got a short bike ride in this evening. Wish I could have gone longer, but I was canning spaghetti sauce, freezing pesto sauce, watching my niece and trying to get dinner ready. So I hit all my close, big hills - 4 of them. Quality not quantity tonight! 30 minute ride - 6.84 miles

We wanted to take the kids on a hike today and choose the Battle Creek trail which happens to be at the summit of my PG High School hill. So I decided to ride my bike over and meet Tim and the kids. That is a long hill to bike up! I keep thinking it will get easier....someday! I switched my shoes and we started up the short hike. This is my kids first "real" hike and they did really great. We walked like a "caterpillar" so we would stay on one side of the trail. We saw a cave, lots of spider webs, and threw lots of rocks. It encompassed everything a hike is about! I was going to ride home, but it was almost lunch time when we finished and I still needed to go grocery shopping. So I rode in the van.
Off to pig out at a family BBQ!

| BIKE - 15.44 miles in 1:06:54 I rode my favorite Highland/Alpine loop loaded with hills. It was super duper chilly this morning and it took me a long time to get warmed back up. I saw lots of deer too. I was 2/3 the way up a big climb and out popped a deer right in front of me. Probably the best it has felt in the past 9 months. I didn't want to get too excited, but...... It felt good when I ran on it this morning. I averaged between 8:30-8:45 mm during the run (which still isn't that fast), but compared to the 10 mm I've been doing on the TM...... I ankle is still sore from the abuse of the PT. More scraping....ouch. After my run tonight, my oldest daughter (6 years old) want to "go for a run". So we ran slow up to the mail box and progressively got faster. I told her to "book it" during the last 100 m. She did a great job. If I ever have a kid that wants to run, I'm going to have to hold my emotions in check! I canned way too many things today. Peaches and a few pears (the rest need to ripen a big more). Spaghetti sauce...yummy. And apple pie filling and apple butter on Monday (we will have apple fritters for desert). Plus I have 2 big buckets of green beans to take care of. The shelves are filling up!

Too much fun camping. We had a wonderful weekend of cool weather, snipe hunts, nummy food, campfires, smores, and country bands. Hooray! On a total side note, all the fun holiday scents have arrived at Scentsy. If you are need of a few, check out my website: https://tobybarlow.scentsy.us

BIKE:12.34 miles - 51:27miles I had a time getting moving this morning. But once I was off, off I was.... My run felt SO fantastic. First, the weather was cooler - love that. I kept reminding myself to slow down. But I just kept getting faster. This evening, my ankle still feels good. We'll see! I was a bit unmotivated for the bike. I am just so darn slow! But I did it and now it is done. I am hoping to get a lot more biking in this upcoming week. We had a great picnic between conference sessions at the park. It was such a beautiful day!

48 minutes - 4.25 miles 3 min walk - 7 min run 4x 2 min run to 8 min walk I've been a bit MIA lately, but thankfully, I'm still getting my running in and my ankle is feeling great. I was invited to be a vendor at 3 different holiday boutiques to sell my childrens clothing. When I went to drop off a few samples, I received FIVE custom dress orders and I just received a package from a pattern designer from the Bay area to sew all her samples for the Houston quilt market. I've been in my sewing studio all day and night; my hubby calls it the sweat shop. So many good things are happening - tender mercies! Here is what I have been up too (these are just a few).: (I am totally tooting my own horn, and don't mean too, but I can't believe people actually like my stuff)

I always run so much faster outside and really had to control my speed (not that I'm all that fast). But when I go alittle slower, my ankle feels better. I'm SO FLIPPIN' slow on the bike. I tried to hit every big hill in AF to make the best of the amount of time I had. So so so slow..... Back to sewing :)

I think there are a few contributing factors: I've been running really slow - 10:30ish miles (really really slow), but it is keeping my ankle happy! Also, my mind has been elsewhere (not as focused/obsessed on running). Regardless, I feel good and am progressing. Off to take my kids to a hotel for the night for fall break! Hip hip hooray! This is the farthest I've run since December 2009. WALK/RUN: 4.02 miles 40:26 minutes The weather this morning in Moab was incredible - cool and slightly overcast. I ran with Tim and our friend (his wife opted to stay back). Considering that running is the ONLY thing that I am better at than Tim, I decided to pick up the pace and give them a run for their money. It was fun to make them sweat a bit! The rain finally cleared and we were able to ride the practice loop at Slick Rock (we had to out of the condo, so that was all we had time for). It took me a few minutes to remember how to ride the rock, but once I got going it was amazing. No crashes - just a few scrapes. Glad to be home and see the kids!

Turkey Triathlon (3.1 Miles) 01:13:55, Place in age division: 6 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 0.00 | 3.10 | 3.10 |
|
My attitude going into this race was SO completely different than any other race I've ever done. I'm usually a stress mess - I let the race get to my head and I psych myself out. But this is why it was different:
1. This is my first race since December 31 - Beat the New Year. 2. I've been battling this stupid stress fracture since January 2010 and consequently haven't run a consecutive 3 miles (I usually have to walk a bit in between each mile to give my ankle a rest).
3. I've never done a triathlon before. 4. I felt like I really didn't "train" that hard for this race (these past few weeks I've been so preoccupied with getting a gazillion articles of clothing sewn). I had an open house last night for all my children's clothing, but was able to get to bed by 9:00pm. Oh....it was so nice to sleep! I went and picked up the babysitter at 7:00am and Tim and I headed off to the Orem Rec Center. Though it was warm, there was still a bit of chill in the air. We dropped off our bikes in the transition area, picked up our race packets, timing chips and got our arms and legs numbered (that by far was the coolest part of doing a triathlon! I felt totally official).
We went back to our bikes and I started watching all the "PRO'S" hang out by their gear. I felt like such a fish out of water - I had NO idea what I was doing!
We went for a quick potty break (having to take off all the layers of clothes over a swim suit was a PAIN). We took a quick spin on our bikes. It felt good to warm up, but then I started to think how out of shape I really am! How slow I am on a bike and what a terrible swimmer I was. My main goal during the run was to help Tim run a consistent race. But silly me, I didn't bring my Garmin and they didn't have mile markers. I felt OK during the run, but I could feel that my lungs were sucking air. Definitely need to bump up the miles. As I rounded the corner to the finish...I kept thinking "I still have to bike and SWIM". But quickly took off my shoes, put on my helmet and swore because Tim was already gone. So I ran through the transition area and clipped into my peddles. When I train on my bike, I am SLOW SLOW SLOW! But today, I was a lot faster. I consistently passed people. We had to go up this GIANT hill on 400 south in Orem. Though it was hard and I was really sucking air, but I didn't die and was able to recover quickly. That was a real confidence booster. We had to do the bike loop twice. I quickly dismounted from the bike, threw my gear down and headed to the pool. Running in a swim suit to not fun! That swim was the STINKEST thing I've ever done. There were so many people in the lanes and I kept getting kicked and hit. In the shallow end, I ran faster than I swam. My goggles were constantly foggy and my contacts were getting messed up. I just kept thinking, 5 more laps to go, 4 more laps to go....But then I was done. Tim was at the finish with his parents. He finished 3 minutes ahead of me. I'm so competitive, who cares if he is my hubby, it made me mad he beat me! I told him it was "GO TIME" at the next tri! We dried off and got dressed. They had posted the results and I had to do a double check. I placed 6th in my AG - but there were 3 of us that finished at 1:13:00, so if I would have been 2 seconds faster, I could have come in 4th! Given my training for the past several months, I feel ok about the race (I can definitely run and bike faster). I definitely want to do another tri!

| 4.92 miles 43:43 minutes Splits: 9:26, 9:05, 8:52, 8:43, 7:36(8:14 pace for the last .92) Have you ever had a run where all the stars line up in the sky and complete utopia takes over. That was today. This is why: 1. I ran up the canyon. You can never go wrong by running up a canyon! 2. It was cold, but not too cold. Just right cold. 3. I was with my ALL-TIME favorite running buddy. My SIL - she is a rock star of a runner. She had to go slower today because of me, but we had such a great conversation and have the unsaid rule that if you need to go...then go. No hard feelings. I haven't run this far yet since my injury. My ankle is a bit tender, but nothing like in the past. I will have tomorrow off and depending on how it feels Monday morning, I may do the stair climber. I came home feeling so great - mentally and physically. I really feel like I am progressing and moving forward. This time, I think it is for-real! I may start to think about races for 2011 (but I'm afraid I might jinx myself!).

It is going to be a rude awakening come next week when I have to get my lazy hiney out of bed! I went to the foot doctor today. The tendon that holds my ankle bone and muscles in place is still really weak. He recommended that I get specialized orthotics (lightweight for running) for extra support. $300 bucks - ouch! But he didn't think that I had refractured it and it was the sore tendon. Onward and upward!

| 43 minutes This was my "long" run of the week since I am running the "Beat the New Year" 5k tomorrow and will be recovering on Saturday. Time seemed to fly by! I took down all my Christmas decorations today and deep cleaned the kitchen/family room. It always feels liberating to get all of that done!

It has taken me a day to recover from a *middle of the night* run (hence the delay in the race report)! Though I slept in some, I was all out of whack yesterday. I definitely an early to bed kind of gal!
What a fantastic night! The Salt Lake City Track Club was much more prepared this year than last. The registration was held at the high school so there was much more room (and it was really warm inside...almost too warm). They had more race shirts and more man power. Not as many costumed runners this year (no hairy speedo guy or bikini lady), but still more runners than last year despite the frigid temperatures! Kelli was a ROCK STAR for trucking up to Sugar House in the middle of the night on a freakin' cold night (My clothing count consisted of 2 pants and 5 shirts)! She ran with me and was hardly breathing (while I was huffing and puffing)! What a great pacer and chatter (I am a really bad talker when I run)! The course was two laps around Sugar House park (the Garmin said the distance was 3.18 - they did change the course alittle from last year). There was snow covered ice which made it tricky for gripping! You had to be really careful going down the downhills and slipped while going up!
I am becoming more and more aware of just *how* out of shape I really am. I am starting all over again. BUT I am very ok with that fact, because I am running and not recovering!
Mile splits: 8:38, 8:30, 8:17, 1:38
Thanks again Kelli for driving and for the GREAT company!
