Happy New years everone!

4.8 (3 am lol): got back from some fun new years parties and kept my high school tradition alive by running the morning of New Years Day. Just did a big loop up to canyon road, out to the canyon, to the road lone peak is on and back to my house. lol, the one time I'll double this week will be at 3 am.

10.08 in the later morning. Wishing that I would have done my longer run at 3 am and then the shorter now cuz it was really snowy which made for slippery tough conditions. Good stuff though.

Woke up feeling sick so planned not to run. Then by noon I was like, I can make it 2 or 3 miles. And I went out a mile and decided to loop it to 3, then decided to do tramp run which would make it to 5, then looped around to make it 6, then decided to run to AF high school to make it 11, then just kept adding more cuz I felt better every mile more I went. Never had that happen before.

Met at art dye, went out on Murdock heading toward the point of the Mountain. I feel like on all the long runs I've done, after mile 13 I just feel wrecked. Before that it doesn't feel bad, but after 13 I just feel tired. Feels good to be done for the week!

After debating for a long time of how far I can push myself, I decided that I would probably break in the next few weeks if I kept up the higher mileage stuff, so I decided to drop back to 55-65 miles for the next couple weeks til I feel ready to move up. 8 miles out on the provo river trail. after did some L 7 stretches for steeplechase! getting really excited for that but from the stretches I see that I am really unflexible

Too much stretching too soon can cause tendon tears and muscle damage. Work into it slowly.

When I injured my achilles tendon my doctor gave me that advice.

In looking at your next couple of posts, it might be the sudden stretching that is causing your hamstring problems.

Maybe a nice easy Yoga class would be good for your flexibility.

Nice easy run. 7:40 avg pace felt nice! legs are starting to feel pretty good after being wrecked for the past little while. I think mileage for this year will be between 55-65 with an occasional 70. just don't want to get injured

2 mile warmup, then got my hamstring taped up, and put heat on my back. Got spiked up, and then some strides.

The gun went off, and there was a ton of pushing and shoving for position, i got clipped and pushed a few times, but made it to the outside at the first turn, then decided to surge up near the front to get out of the mess. I found myself behind Zac Jacklin and held with him til the end. In the middle of the race I passed clayson and he took his number off his hip, and slapped it on me haha, so i took it off and slapped it back on him. Felt like I had more in me at the end, I think I should have and could have gone faster, just was a little nervous passing guys on the team that I felt were more experienced and faster than me. But overall a great race and very  happy with the race.

You might have even run a few seconds faster if you wouldn't have been playing Tag with your teammate's race number. :)

(Here in Japan that would have been an automatic disqualification to touch another runner on purpose during a race.)

Felt really good til my back tightened up but finished the workout. 2x2 mile, then a mile. first one was tempoish and we went 10:04, then we did a faster one and came through the mile in 4:42, then my back tightened up half a mile to go so i kind of died on that one and went 9:53, then the mile we went 4:52 i think. tough workout. my body is wrecked. AM, just over an hour of some HOT yoga. The room was 105 and it made me very tired!

Nice run out in some pretty perfect weather! Shorts and an old soccer jersey, nothing better than running with that. Ran out, did backwards black trail kind of, then looped around to make it the forward version also, then ran past legacy, and on home. after the hot yoga felt kinda drained of energy, cuz I did it an hour and a half after finishing the yoga.

Foot has been giving me a weird sensation, and then last week it was starting to hurt a bit, so I talked to the trainers and they suggested I cross train a few days, then see how it is. 1 hour of biking, did some pickups. also like 15 minutes of the arc trainer

another hour of biking. 

went in to do the exercise things for my foot (tendonitis), then headed out, then got a text from Adam Wood telling me to go back in and talk to TJ. So i did, and he asked how it was doing, I said it felt a little better without the pounding of running and that it feels less like there is a bump under my foot, and he said suddenly, that might be Morton's Neuroma. He then stretched my toes open, and had me walk and the bump was completely gone, and I almost didnt notice it. 

so good news is that I will be back running, just with little things inbetween my toes lol. Feeling blessed that it was something with an easy fix.

1.5 mile shakeout in the morning 2.5 warm up. Strides 3k race, went out hard. Was in 2nd and within the first 400 my body was already tired and wasn't responding, decided to try to hold on. Held on somewhat and then kicked. Next time gonna open in like a 66 and come through the mile in 4:23ish Then I think I can cruise the last part. 8 mile cooldown. Seattle is beautiful! Also got to talk to Talon Hull the Davis Slayer (he has a blog but hasn't been using it now)

So what was your time for the 3K? You wrote on your last blog entry that you were aiming for 8:10, and according to your blog your PR is 8:28. Were you able to get a new PR?

I don't know why, but when I run a race on the track, I always feed wasted after the first lap. I think it is a psychological thing. If I hang on after that I usually am able to find my groove and things become easier.

I also think Seattle is beautiful. My family's home is in Seattle. My step-father's work here in Japan will end in one more year, then we will be here in Japan for one more year and then will return to Seattle.

30 minutes of biking before practice.

just over 10 miles in the freezing cold, windy outdoors.

steeple drills after. Also first time jumping hurdles, it honestly felt really weird but I'm sure after time of doing it I will get better

stretch, roll out, and ice bath after.  time seems to move pretty slow biking and ice bathing so I decided that what feels like 5 minutes on the stationary bike is actually only 1 minute passing by. what feels like 5 minutes of icebathing is 2.5 minutes passing by. what feels like 5 minutes of running is about 4 minutes passing by. what feels like 5 minutes of eating is 10 minutes actually. what feels like 5 minutes of being on my phone is actually 1 hour. lol.

Starting the doubles. 3.8 in the morning

Warmup then VO2 max 800's. 6x800 Coach had me in the top group with jake, talem, zac, matt, and Garnica. 2:11, 2:11, 2:11, 2:10, 2:08, 2:11. So you basically covered 1 mile in 4:04, and if you would have finished the last 400m you would have covered 2 miles in 8:08. That is really good for someone who is feeling bad.

Early shakeout to get the legs moving. 2.1 miles

Warm up 2 miles

5k debut. Legs felt really good, back and breathing were alright. Also decided to chew some gum because that seems to help my back not tighten. Went out near the back of the pack holding 68's. Came through the mile in 4:33 and felt great! Held that and then with a mile to go started feeling pretty tired, and I honestly don't even remember what happened but one second the pack was there, then the next the pack was gone and I was following one person, so I tried to chase the pack down but was all alone. 1200 to go I my back started hurting and I felt that I could have possible put on more speed and maybe made it to the end, but I was worried I wouldn't make it and die, so I slowed down. Looking back I wish I would have just tried cuz I think I might have actually pulled it off. But I was going slow for the 1200-400 to go and then knew I could bring it in.

Not a bad first 5k. I think I could have gone to that next state when I was hurting and speed up instead of slowing down, if that feeling comes again I'll try that.

2 mile warmup, 3k race, 10 miles after. 

Felt good in the race, I honestly was really scared about my back hurting so I didn't go with the leaders. We opened in 66, then 64, then I went 69, without realizing how slow it was. came through the mile in 4:29, then realized that my back wasn't hurting, and that I felt pretty good. Started picking it up from there and the 3rd place guy started dropping off so I was able to catch him at the end. Happy about the race because my back didnt hurt and I could breath. I think that's a sign of good things to come. Plan going forward is to start putting in some more mileage by going 3-4 in the morning and then 8ish in the afternoon. I think I just lack some mileage and base to be able to put together a few great races during outdoor track.

I feel like my right leg is a better lead and trail leg. also the hurdlers were practicing when I was going over the hurdles so they probably thought I was a dweeb lol.

4 in the morning. Felt suprisingly good.

Workout in the afternoon. I went to the chiropractor before and it seemed to help out some. Definitely the best workout for me in a long time. 4xmile. 4:45, 4:38, 4:34, 4:37. I can tell that I am really really fit, I just got to figure out the back/breathing problem completely. But really happy with the workout. Also on the second rep, i was behind zac jacklin and he clipped kramer's foot and did a studder and mckay was up on my shoulder so i had no were to go but try to stop, but i hit jacklin's foot and it rolled my ankle pretty good and I went like 5 meters of the awkward almost falling/trying to keep up and somehow I managed to stay up. My ankle kinda hurt but I think with the adrenaline and all it wasn't too bad but now it is feeling really really stiff.

Kinda a bummer, woke up in the morning and my ankle was super stiff so I didn't run.

In the afternoon I got it taped up and was told that I had to run on the alter G or on the grass so I chose grass and did 8 miles of grass loops. 

After I iced it and I think it should be good enough by tomorrow for the workout

goal was to do the first steeple workout but after talking to the trainer he said absolutely no way I could even try because of my ankle. so I did the workout with the 5k/10k guys. 6x800, 2x400 was what the workout was but my breathing was kinda bad so I ended up doing 3x800, then rested one then did the last 2 800's and then did 200, and then 400. went 2:13, 2:11, 2:09, rest, 2:10, 2:12, 30, 60.  Ankle felt fine for the most part. should be 100% by next week.

Workout in the morning with Clayson.  5x800 with the last lap over hurdles. felt pretty clunky at first but afterwards got more into the groove. went between 68-72 for the first 400 and 71-74 over the hurdles. Definetly gonna focus on getting the technique down better because when I first started going over I feel like I completely forgot what I was doing and started jumping more vertical instead of forward. 

Wow, lots of news in like 2 hours. we'll start with the good and end with the bad. Good: we had our first day of practice for XC 2020. The fuel card still works! I have time to build and get really fit! Bad: that's cuz track is cancelled.  4 in the afternoon with the team. Crazy stuff

Quite a run. Ran from my house, did extended mountain run backwards, then ran up to middle spring, then looped around, and got back on mountain run, ran down by Lone Peak and back home. Lots of vert in comparison to what we normally have been doing at BYU which made it tiring. But trails are why I love running so it was quite beautiful!

My ankle was kinda wacked out... so I decided to bike. I went from my house up over suncrest and down it, then turned right around and biked up that beast from the back side and then headed home. It was almost 29 miles and it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes. I felt so drained at the end. It was way hard. I feel like that's got to be how it feels at the end of a marathon. I climbed 1200 feet in 2.5 miles then went down the backside and went right back up climbing 800 feet in 1.5 miles. Not a good idea for someone who never gets on a bike.

Beautiful run, but at mile 11 I rolled my ankle again pretty good and it shook it up pretty bad. Most of the time I can just run through a rolled ankle but I had to stop and walk for a second and then hobbled back. gotta get it fixed up. I'll probably tape it up for a few days when I run so that it can't get turned

If you are like most of us, you probably have no races in the near future, so you can probably afford to take a few days off.

When I had a very bad sprained ankle a while back, the doctor told me not to run until there was absolutely no pain in the ankle when I put my full weight on it. Then when I started back running to start slow and run on very level surfaces.

He gave me a bunch of exercises to do so I didn't lose fitness while I wasn't running.

So take a few days off from running and do a bunch of core and other exercises.

started back up again today. I tried running last week twice but my ankle was bugging me and for some reason my shin was too. I decided to not run the rest of the week and started up again today. Felt pretty good today. ankle felt kind of weak and a dull pain but not the sharp nagging pain of last week. happy about that I may try to run 2 or 3 more miles later today.

Plan was to just do 7 or 8 but then I decided to run in Salt Lake because I had to go take the Ornamental and Turf test at the Utah Department of Agriculture in Salt Lake. Soo, I searched for a trail and found one that branched off all over the place and ran on that. It was wayyyy pretty and I want to run it again. The only problem was there were a ton of bikes that I either had to pass or they were going the opposite way and I had to pass them .

felt like dying on this run. IDK if I was just exhausted, hot, dehydrated, sick, or what, but I tried to do an 800 and a couple 400's but I couldn't get faster than a 70 on the 400. Then finishing up the milage, I couldn't barely run 7:30's, the last 1.5 miles I think was like 7:50 avg and I was giving everything I had. hopefully it feel better tomorrow.

climbed mahogany. i hiked/ran it. Some parts were impossible to run. I'd say i was in the running motion for about half of it, then a quick hike for the other part. (it's 2.6 miles up and you gain 3800 ft)  I also think that I've got a rib out again and that might be why i feel so wrecked

Paced Jaron Hartshorn in the mile today. He's a freshman at Lone Peak and paced him to a 4:20.9 (it was also kinda windy) I'm very impressed, he's gonna be insanely fast cuz he still doesn't train that much, he has plenty to grow. to put it in perspective, the fastest time in the state as a freshman before was Grant Gardiner with 4:21, then Connor Mantz with 4:22, then Mckay Johns with 4:23... so he's up with good company.

good to see you back! my launches from high school were probably my third favorite training shoe, behind the NB zantes and the pegs(obviously).

i've never had that achilles problem before, but about a week ago while i was wearing the pegs during work i noticed the same thing. it stopped after that shift, but it was super annoying.

2x2 mile after. Went 10:01 (wheeled out 2 mile... we had 2.1 on watches) then we did a fast start for the first 800 in 2:21, then next mile was 5:02, then last 800 was 2:26. Felt pretty relaxed the whole time, didn't want to go into the well at all today so happy with the turnout.

Really fun time, warmed up 2 miles then did some strides, grabbed a piece of gum and got ready to race.

Race started off fast, I always blow up if I start too fast so I started near the back. I moved up after 800, and kept moving up through the first 4k til I was on the back of the front pack. This is where my first mistake was, the front 3rd of the pack broke off, and dropped the back 2/3rds Then a few seconds later this back pack split into two groups. I didn't recognize either of these splits and got stuck with the back of both split offs. I surged up where one of the NAU guys was dropping of the 2nd pack and ran with him the next 4k picking off people. Around 3k to go we dropped a few SUU guys, and I saw two more NAU guys. I tried to drop the NAU guy with me but he kept matching my surges, then putting in a surge, and we just kept alternating til we caught the other two NAU guys that were like 50 meters and 75 meters in front. Then us 4 all ran together til the finish where two of them out kicked me, I out kicked one of them and an SUU guy who was falling back. 

Super happy with the race, a great starting point for me, hungry for more. 

Plan for the future is just working on closing the gap between the front guys and me.

PM: 9.5x1000. Got a side ache on the 2nd to last one so I just hopped in at the 500 mark. Kramer and I decided to work on closing the gap so we started at normal pace, then after 5 we went about a second behind the pro group, then we went in the mix with the pro group. Kinda weird to have Jared Ward running next to you realizing he got 6th at the olympics.

Michigan workout. Struggled breathing... saw the chiropractor after and realized why, my T4, T5, and one other that I didn't catch what he said we out as well as my some muscles were really tight. 

4:30 mile, 5:04 tempo, 3:24 1200, 2:31 (only did 800 cuz the trainer was trying to fix my rib). 2:12 800, 4:57 tempo, 64 400, 2:36 tempo (only did 800). Real struggle bus.

it means one of the ribs gets misaligned or out of place which causes the rib cage to not be able to expand

then 5 miles with dustin plus some grass loops to get 7 plus 4x 100 meter stride. Body was feeling kinda weird. also feels like i've got some bursitis in my heel... I had the problem in high school, i'm hoping it doesnt get worse

Definitely not pretending to be an expert on running form, but does your heel strike the ground first when you run? That might be the cause of bursitis.

workout in the afternoon. my body wasn't handling it so i just went back after 2 intervals. my left hamstring was hurting, and my right calf as well as my heel area from the bursitis (but that wasn't too bad). Then I just couldn't run. don't know why but i'll be better by next week hopefully

Good times, thought coach was just going to have us run kinda fast but nothing too quick, but he had Talem take us out pretty quick. We came through 4:26 and then I didn't really have much motivation or speed to keep it up. didn't feel great at the beginning, but wasn't too bad either, just kinda marginal but I ran a very quick time in comparison to what I was planning on doing and what I thought I could do. I think I could have gone around 10 seconds faster had I wanted it and prepared mentally a little better. super happy with where I was at.
