My longest run after June last year was 10.0 miles. Forced rest and recovery. Now that it's a new year, my restriction is gone. I didn't intend to go longer right away, but I felt so good on this run with spry legs and great weather (60 deg, no rain) that I ran 10.5 miles in 76 min. I'm still not racing for at least 6 more months, though. That would mean a whole year of no racing, and 2 years of no competitive racing (yes, Western States 100 was non competitive).

PM- PM run with Seth and Barry. It was pretty cold out, below 40 and breezy. I actually felt really good, as opposed to yesterday. Lots of energy, no soreness from the hills or rocks, and I even ran away from the other two at the end. Normal loop, plus a little extra to go see the property Barry is thinking of buying.

Any goals for 2016? Assuming that is that you aren't REALLY retired from racing.

From Jon on Tue, Jan 05, 2016 at 19:34:21 from 96.33.87.148

None. Stay retired.

I plan to do nothing serious, no racing, for at least 6 months. That will give me a full year since my last race, and almost 2 years since my last competitive race. When July rolls around, I'll evaluate how I'm feeling and see if I want to start training for anything. Don't expect so much as a 5k for a long time, though. I'm boring.

I do have some races I've wanted to do, so will likely unretire at some point in the distant future.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jan 05, 2016 at 19:41:25 from 24.10.247.181

Does the Greenville Track Club still do the Paris Mountain Road Race?

From Jon on Tue, Jan 05, 2016 at 20:01:17 from 96.33.87.148

The 20k? Yes. Although they changed it to a half marathon for a year or two, but then changed it back to a 20k. I've never done that one, though might consider it, too. Although I haven't paid for a road race in 6+ years.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jan 05, 2016 at 20:07:21 from 24.10.247.181

I finished 2nd one year. It's a road race, but a tough one. Everyone focuses on the climb up Paris Mt., but the rollers on Poinsette Hwy. are the hardest part.

Lunch- Dan wanted a workout, so we ran to the lake and ran a 5k. I tailed behind the others- my lungs generally felt ok, but my legs were burning, especially my hip flexors. Started at 6:25 pace, then gradually slowed till I finished at 6:45 pace. It was my first sub-7 min miles since June. I'll take it. Finished the 5k in 20:30 (that's nothing to write home about!) and did 8 or so miles in all.

I might be. Except I'm not racing at all. :)

Please refer to my goals at the left.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Jan 09, 2016 at 20:39:40 from 24.10.247.181

All my races these days are seat-of-the-pants. I usually schedule them 1-2 days out if I feel like racing and have the time. That way I have fun and don't stress over it.

So I guess you could say my goals are to have fun and enjoy the occasional challenge of racing.

Lots of X-rays, and trying to pop elbow in thinking it was nurse's elbow. They couldn't find anything, but then she started using the arm an hour after we got home and said it was all better. So it must have been dislocated and the doc popped it back in without knowing it.

I was a huge Carolina fan back in the day. I don't know if you know this, but their first year back in the 90s they played all their home games at Clemson while the stadium in Charlotte was being built. All the visiting teams would stay at the Hyatt in downtown Greenville. So it was like Greenville was an NFL city for a year.

Love Denver and Manning but they aren't good for the blood pressure! Man that was a stressful game.

Are you fired up for the SC primary? I sometimes miss living in a state that matters politically.

From Jon on Wed, Feb 03, 2016 at 06:08:14 from 104.129.204.76

I'm just glad I don't watch TV so I don't have to see all these ads. I wish the polling phone calls would stop (they call about every hour some days). As for the primary, I'm not voting. Blasphemy, I know. I voted for Ron Paul 4 years ago, but I don't like any of the candidates this time so will abstain. Lest you get upset, I'm sure I'll vote in the general election, although will likely leave the president slot empty.

If I did vote, I'd most likely vote in the democratic primary for Bernie rather than the republican primary. Not that I like him- I don't at all, not at all. But I'd much, much rather see him elected than Hillary. I look at all the candidates and am saddened to think one of these people will be elected in November. Personally, I think anyone who wants to run for a high office should automatically be blocked. I think our country would be better off if all of Congress and the President were randomly chosen from the phone book for 1 term each- you'd be less likely to get narcissistic, egomanic, sociopathic/psychopatic, power and money-seeking politicians that we have today.

Hmm, I might have just shared my true feelings about government officers. Strong views, but I honestly believe what I just wrote.

Jan 15, 1978, Super Bowl XII, Broncos vs Dallas. I was born 9 months later, mid-October.

3 of the 7 young men in my church group were born the same week as me. 7 of the 14 varsity cross country runners on my team in HS were born that same week. My best HS friend was also born that week (talking to you,Michael). I never put it together until I saw this video- we're all Super Bowl babies!

Lunch- 10 or so. Not too fast, kinda tired. Didn't sleep a single minute last night, just tossed in bed. Finally decided to just get to work. You can get a great parking spot at 4:15 am. It was even the day of my annual performance review with my boss, who was in town from Atlanta. I think I was attentive the whole time.

lunch run plus fun game of 4v5 ultimate frisbee.  I was on the 4 team, so more running than usual. We usually play for about 40 min, then a game to 3 pts.

Meanwhile at home, we have some kind of stomach virus going around. 4 of the 5 kids have puked in the past 24 hours, some of them numerous times. Blah. Hope Marci and I don't get it.

Saturday long run- all of 4.5 miles in 37 min or so. Yes, impressive. I used to do 4.5 hrs, not 4.5 miles. I'm not sure if it's cause of my lack of days off during the week, lack of sleep, stress, or frisbee on Friday, but my legs are generally very tired every Saturday. Oh well.

I kind of enjoy the entertainment value of the whole thing. I'll be glad when the whole election is over, though, and we'll get back to the government stealing more of our money and killing more people overseas without as much focus on it (not that those things are good, obviously, but there's a reason the circus only comes to town once a year, if you know what I mean)

Lunch- snake day. Right as I started running, I saw what looked like a small dead snake on the GE track. As I went to poke it, I decided better and grabbed a stick. Then a longer stick. I poked the little critter (maybe 18 inches long) and it was very much alive. It started slithering off the track, then curled up in stricking position. Inspection by the 3 of us out there led to the conclusion that it was a timber rattlesnake. I'm glad it didn't bite me. A few minutes later, we saw a big (2.5 or 3 feet long) black rat snake in the middle of the road. Jim jumped over this one. Ran 10.5 miles or so on another hot day- not as bad as the record 86 deg high yesterday, but still warm today.

Yes, Jared did it. Amazing. And 2 others also started the 5th loop- which means it was the first time 2 runners dropped out during that loop.

From Jon on Thu, Apr 14, 2016 at 19:11:40 from 96.33.87.148

You've probably never had a huge male turkey chase you for a mile. Multiple times. Coming within 6 feet of you, ignoring any rocks or sticks lobbed at it. He once chased me off the trail, across the GE track, and halfway though a parking lot (dodging parked cars) until a pickup truck almost ran him over. Then he turned around and started chasing some guys walking on the track. It's chased quite a few people, and it's really big. This might change your mind.

I've run into lots of other turkeys without incident. It's unfortunate the only problem turkey is the one where I run the most.

Justin, do you remember if you had all-laser Lasik (bladeless)? Or did they use a blade to cut the cornea flap?

Do you remember price?

From J Cole on Thu, Apr 28, 2016 at 05:57:34 from 73.38.118.238

I had the all laser LASIK. Its been so long I don't remember the price, but I want to say it was around $1000/eye.

Looking at some FRB numbers- over 2700 of the blogs have not been updated for 3+ years, while 1200 have been updated in that time. Fewer than 600 have been updated within the past year. There's almost 4000 FRB addresses, and less than 10% have been updated this year. Interesting to see how few runners are still using this site. I wonder how many have stopped running entirely vs. how many are now on Strava. From what I can tell, the largest active group now is Utah high school runners.

Interesting. May end up going back to us long timers like it was in the beginning. Too bad for the changes, Strava appears to be more about KOM and beating the other folks on the app. FRB is more about community (most of the time) and many of my best friends have come from relationships via the FRB.

From Rob Murphy on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 08:34:21 from 24.10.247.181

When the FRB came out it was pretty pioneering and cutting edge. It suits my low tech needs just fine but the failure to update the platform has led to the steep drop off. It's also true that running is only a temporary life phase for some folks.

From Jason D on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 10:59:18 from 68.80.27.222

I consider FRB my official training log. I expect to be on it as long as I run.

I do use Strava because I can never manage to recruit my in-person running friends :-) If you like data I think Strava is it.

I don't see a lot of people chasing segments too earnestly. I do myself every once in a while but it's generally good-natured competition. I would never suggest it proves anything about my fitness--more likely my ability to not get hit by cars.

The long time FRBers I suspect are likely life-long runners or people who have excelled at the sport. That would be a bit tough to determine but to my knowledge Paul and Glen are probably two of the longest term, active bloggers (I'm not including Sasha of course). I see a lot of people's "Johnny B. Goode's Boston Training Blog" that are never really updated.

From Jake K on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 11:42:47 from 67.166.113.191

You need an easy to use app these days. And all that would probably do is keep the longer-term users content. It wouldn't attract new users at this point, so I can see why Sasha wouldn't devote resources to that.

That being said, I like being able to paste in photos and do simple HTML... FRB is still a great digital marble composition book.

From Bret on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 11:55:40 from 107.77.90.47

Never used Strava - but I wonder if it would capture the sense of community FRB provides. Maybe Jason can comment. I have used a few other online training logs - but currently this is my one and only. An app would be nice - but not essential for me.

From Jon on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 12:11:30 from 96.33.87.148

I have a GPS watch, but never use it. Same with Strava account. I prefer the old-school, quick and easy to enter what I want, FRB format, like you guys said. And the social aspect. I'm still sad Davy Crockett and Cody stopped using it.

Jeff, those were the good ole days of 2007-8, when we knew most of the bloggers.

From Rob Murphy on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 17:15:29 from 24.10.247.181

Another thing the FRB needs is a "like" or "heart" button for comments.

From Jason D on Sun, May 08, 2016 at 17:41:11 from 68.80.27.222

I forgot that Allie has been on since 2005, mostly because she's a couple years younger than me. I liked Bonnie's blog. Lots of positivity. Some blogs are set to private. It's weird when I see a rare comment from someone I thought had disappeared but click to find that their blog is private.

Lunch- Hot, humid day. First ultimate frisbee since my Lasik. It was overly crowded with 9 on 9, which led to lots of blocked passes (I took a hit on the shin and elbow). Even game until we started our official, "first to 3 wins" at the end. My team won 3-0. Then we played again, 3-0 again. Sweet.

AM- ran from scout camp up the Mt Mitchell trail to meet the YM high adventure group finishing their 3 day backpacking trip. Passed all of them, kept going up, then passed most of them again on the way down. 8.2 miles, 2 hours. The trail is pretty dang technical for much of the distance. It gained 2700 ft in 4 miles, which is probably more vertical than I've had in a month since Western. My quads were sore by halfway down but held out ok till the end. Sore for a number of days afterwards. If I start doing trail races again, I'll definitely have to toughen them up. Good trail, I miss trails.

If you're going to catch me on the mileage board you're going to have to wait for the fall. Summer is my prime time. Or hope I get injured which I don't.

The miles were painful (still sore and fatigued from trail runs last week), the travelogue was entertaining and informative.

I haven't filled in mileage from last week yet. Watch out. And once I get caught up on sleep in the next week, I'm hunting for you.

I'll be the first to admit I used to regularly check dozens of FRB's, now I only check a few, and not often. It's pretty much a personal journal now that I make public.

I've noticed that much of the recent FRB growth seems to be high school runners in Utah, which I think is great. They certainly take over the Race Reports list after a track meet.

Jason, I heard 2 separate incidents of where the turkey attacked runners in the past few months and they grabbed a log and beat the tar out of it, leaving it stunned on the ground. Yet he still keeps chasing runners. Next time he chases me again, it might be my turn to deliver a beating.

You will. Downtime is good I think for runners who are in it for the long term. You have had a pretty intense ultra career the last few years. Speaking of which, I just saw a documentary on Badwater and I thought of you. It really intrigued me as well having a lot of respect for those folks who completed the event. What are your thoughts about it?

I think Badwater is definitely a tough event, from what I know and people I've talked to. Doesn't interest me at all- I don't like racing on roads or the heat. But some people seem to really take to it. To each their own. No one will say it's easy.

She is a regular gym rat, doing combat, spin, etc. And she's run a number of races- maybe 6-8 half marathons, even a marathon. But she's doing her first trail race next weekend so has been training on trails some, and says it's addicting. She did 6 miles today, and her race is only a 7k. AM- 6. My ankles/shins have partially recovered from the run in worn out shoes last week, but not completely. Tired. I finally found my Strassburg socks, so can wear those at night. My left Achilles has been real painful lately, so taht should help.

PM- PM with Barry and Seth. It was hot- mid 90's, and probably the most humid run I've had in years. Just oppressive- we were commenting on the humidity within the first few minutes. Holy humid, Batman. Barry did short route, Seth and I did the long route but with a shortcut around the lake. Fun, but so humid. And slow, at least a mile per minute slower than usual.

My wife ran a trail 7k last Saturday and loved it. She said she's addicted and is already counting down till our youngest is in school and she can go trail run daily.

Lunch- Ultimate frisbee. A bit cooler today, low 80's. Big crowd, 8 vs 8. I ran full speed into another guy's shoulder and am pretty sure I bruised a rib right by my sternum. Still hurts to take big breaths, cough, etc. I was only out of the game for 5 minutes, though, but had a bit of trouble recovering afterwards.

PM- So running with a bruised or cracked rib is extremely stupid. First, I received 3 shots today for my India trip, so my shoulders are very sore. Then, I decided I could still run and went to Paris Mountain with Aaron and Seth. Right from the start, I felt like I was slowly suffocating- I couldn't breathe quite deep enough, and I certainly couldn't take deep breaths to catch up. But I did ok until about an hour, then gradually slowed. At 1:10, I lost the group, but they waited for me to catch up, though I slowed even more and fell behind again. By this point, any step that jarred me at all hurt my ribs, so I really tensed up. Between the combination of the tense core, unusual shoulder movement, and chest injury, my back suddenly tightened in 2 places and I could barely run. I half walked, half slow-jogged back to the car on the road, hoping to hitchhike. The last 30 minutes was on the short, short list of most miserable experience on a run. No fun at all. I'm sore all over, tired, and can't breath. Anyways, I think I'll take it easy for a few days. Like I said, don't try running with a bruised rib. I think it was around 9.5 miles in 1:50+.

On a good note, I got a solid 8 hours sleep last night for the first time in months, and hope to again tonight, as well.

I bruised and/or cracked several ribs in a ski crash during the first spring I lived in Vail. I never got the XRay because I was young and poor and figured it didn't make much of a difference what the exact diagnosis was - I knew how much it hurt.

I don't think I even tried running for about a solid month. You can imagine how those lungs expanding against the ribcage at 8000 feet felt.

The worst part for me was sleeping. I had to surround myself with pillows so I wouldn't shift position during the night and roll onto my side.

All that being said, I kept skiing the whole time the ribs were messed up :-)

Anyways - I feel for you... that is a really sucky injury.

From Bret on Wed, Aug 24, 2016 at 14:47:55 from 216.234.133.229

Sorry to hear about the rib injury - I have had that in the past too (playing soccer). The good news is that there are not too many great or safe places to run in India in my limited experience - so, you may have been sidelined anyway. Where in the country will you be?

From Jon on Wed, Aug 24, 2016 at 18:31:50 from 96.33.87.148

Jake, I don't feel so strange about trying to run if you kept skiing. And my pain isn't as bad as your- mainly if I move my right arm the wrong way, or if I take a deep breath, sneeze, cough, laugh, etc. Sleeping is uncomfortable with lots of waking up, but not extreme.

Bret, we're going to New Delhi and the golden triangle.

i bruised a rib or two in a river-tubing-gone-wrong episode back in 2013.

i recall that the pain got worse after 3-4 days. initially my only discomfort was a sharp pain every time i breathed in (which made running annoying). then that subsided and it turned into a deep ache that was more constant, and really sharp if i did something bad like turn abruptly, move in my sleep, sneeze (ahhh!), etc. the hardest thing was getting in and out of my car.

i think this lasted another 3-4 days and then everything subsided a lot and i was running and moving fine again in just over a week. random sharp pains continued for about a month, but only with the wrong movements like abruptly twisting my torso (sorry, frisbee).

i understand severity is different for everyone though, so i hope this doesn't linger too long for you and hope it feels better soon.

AM- I decided to try running. Big mistake. I did 2 miles and my ribs hurt the whole time, plus the knots in my back from a week ago started acting up again. Then did 40 min bike. My ribs had improved to the point they only hurt when I sneezed, lifted something heavy, etc, but they hurt all day today due to the run. Stink. This is going to be a while. Biking doesn't use my lungs much while running does on every breath.

When I lived in Logan after college, I played 2-5 times a week. I would frequently wake up early on Saturday mornings, go for a 20 mile trail run, then immediately play ultimate for 2+ hours. Ahh, to be young and energetic again. This didn't stop until Marci was pregnant with our second kid. It's fun to be able to play for a few hours a week again.

AM- went for a nice morning run after a long day yesterday (work then temple means leave before 7 am, home at 10 pm). Getting home was delayed as I wanted to fill the car with gas but multiple stations were out due to a pipeline breaking in Mississippi. It's amazing how our just-in-time society is so dependent on everything working just right. One pipeline leaking results in gas going up 35 cents in a few hours and multiple stations running out of gas. If there were a long time shortage... well, it wouldn't be pretty.

Anyway, today's run was a slow 6 miles- 8:30 avg pace, or so. Lower legs are a bit sore from the running yesterday, plus bad sleep the past few nights (4 hours last night as I was up at 3 am onward due to sick kid). I listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series- amazing podcasts. I'm on the 5th of 6 in the WW1 series, and each one is 4-5 hours long. WW1 is amazing and so sad.

AM- I had a lunch meeting scheduled (that ended up being cancelled) so ran GE track for 8 miles this morning in 63 minutes or so.

I had some time for thinking during the run, so here's a few of my thoughts (which few people on earth will ever read, but writing them is somewhat carthatic).

I'm just wrapping up the 25-ish hours of Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast series on World War I (amazing, insightful podcast series, by the way). We look at that war now and are amazed how it actually started- almost a series of misunderstandings and mishaps that no one would back down from. However, I look at the world today and fear we are blundering into a similar conflict. I hear nothing from the mainstream US media except propoganda against Russia, Syria, Iran, China, etc. And the US government has troops all over the world, including right on the borders of those countries. Yet no one really thinks a catastrophic war will start and we see ourselves as world protector rather than an occupier of sorts (why do we need troops in the Baltics on Russia's doorstep???). However, all it can take is some unforseen blunder or misunderstanding and we can find ourselves in a hot war with Russia.  I don't understand why the human race, or at least the government leaders, feel the need to bluster and promote power so much rather than work for peace. Sad reflection on them, and us. We're all people, let's not find reasons to kill others just because they live in another country. I think most of the blame for the wars today lies with the US and our "exceptionalism" and invasions, meddling in the affairs of other people.

In unrelated news, I hope the damage from this hurricane is minimal. It's not significant, but my kid's elementary school carnival and my work family day (both with food, rides, etc) may be impacted by the wind and rain.

Finally, company benefit enrollment is approaching and I saw prices today for medical. They are drastically rising again. Even though I work at a top company with "good" benefits, my medical insurance premiums have risen over 500% in the 6 years I've been here, and my deductible has almost doubled. I now have to pay almost $8000 before insurance kicks in a dime. What a joke- yet government tells us their involvement is helping, and inflation is low.

Anyway, my libertarian ranting is over. Moving on...

Stay safe with the hurricane.

I'll be making medical selections shortly as well, and my experience has followed your same pattern. It's disgusting. But hey, more people have insurance so everything is great. *eyeroll*

Blah- still better than sitting in the office. Plus we won 2 games 5-3 and 3-2. In my defense, I'd say the sloppiness was way up today for everyone, and energy level seemed muted.

My wife returns today after a week away. It actually went great with the kids, other than the dog we got a few weeks ago. The dog kept jumping on and hurting the kids. And, it damaged/destroyed probably $1000 worth of stuff (chairs, couches, pillows, shoes, toys, etc). I returned it to the pound today, and it will be a long, long while until I consider getting a dog again.
