I have five cute kids. And I have some rockin short green racing shorts- I wear them mainly because it embarrasses my wife so much. I like ultimate frisbee, trail running, reading, and cheering for the Denver Broncos!   And I have the absolute best wife in the world.  And I used to run for the now-disbanded national Team Pearl Izumi- Ultra!

Had a bit of an adventure the past few weeks including an ER visit and hospital stay due to some chest pains for several days right at my heart. After much testing, no heart-related cause was found. First frisbee game of the year today- 5v4, with everyone playing all game, I was on the smaller team. We battled hard, both teams had lots of chances, and my team won 5-4 in the end. Fun times.

Never found a cause. Not heart attack/blockage. Not blood clot. Not digestive track. Possibly just stress/anxiety related?

Rain later in the week so played frisbee today. 5v5. Played to 7 instead of 5 points. Good game- pretty well played on both sides. I collided with a teammate, knocking her down and earning myself a hard finger into the eye. My team won 7-6.

no workout yesterday, just leg rehab. Tried frisbee today- there were only 6-7 of us so played on small field. I had awkward step which twisted my bad foot in the way to really hurt my recovering Achilles, so I sat out after that. May have really set myself back. Nuts.

Rehab today. The PT gave me clean bill, cancelled remaining appointments, and said I should keep slowly adding load.

Middle School championship track meet tonight. Boys got 4th in Conference, girls won! This is oly the second year of track in our conference, and our girls have won both years. We only had 5-6 practices, and we don't even have a track to practice on, so I think that's pretty good. Having never run hurdles or done long jump or high jump, we had kids win some of those. Cool.

Been a busy few days. No time for workout. At state qualifier track meet- my freshman missed qualifying for state by 4 seconds in the 1600, but did PR by 7 seconds. She did the risky strategy of starting very slow, trailing everyong by 4 seconds at 400m and 5 seconds at 800m. She slowly gained on the slower runners then kicked very hard with 300m to go, moving from dead last to 4th place in 200 m. However, she was in the slower heat and missed advancing by 2 places. She was excited with the new strategy and big PR, though. At the start of the season, she ran 6:25, and ran 5:34 today.

Her distance team is very good. They have the fastest time at 4x8 in the state (9:29) and have 5 distance girls going to state championship.

Cross Country tryout time trial. Got in a mile setting up the cones. Thunderstorms had been predicted for days but held off at the last minute. We aren't cutting any kids this year, which is nice. 45 runners on the team. There's only 450 kids in the entire school, so we are at 10% of the student body this year. If my kids' high school had similar numbers, there would be 250 on the cross country team.

At father-son campout so didn't make the trek to state. My daughter attended as the first alternate for the 4x8 team. She didn't need to run in the end. The team did amazing, winning the race by a second (including a 30m comeback in the last 300m), plus setting the all-time girls state record (9:21). Great job! The girls team took 3rd overall (despite having 0 sprinters in the meet), with other girls scoring in the 800 and 3200. Only one girl is a senior, so hopefully the XC and track teams will be amazing next year.

Finished 3+ week trip yesterday. Didn't work out at all. Took 2 kids to local low-key track meet on hot (95 deg) humid day. I hopped in the 1 mile and 800. Hoped for 9 min mile, ran very consistent laps to finish 7:56. Then 3:29 800. Man, I'm slow these days.

Finally got a quick workout at the gym before it closed. It's been a super busy few weeks- I generally leave to teach seminary at 6:15 am, go right to work, and have not been finishing work till 5 pm or later. Then it's XC practice from 6 till 8:30 pm. Just like last time I played frisbee, my left foot hurts on top afterwards. No workout today. I did go to the location of the XC race I host to make sure the route is still good and try to modify the start/finish location, which were not ideal. However, I found there's construction of a huge building at the 1/2 mile mark so that portion of trail is completely gone. I'll need a major re-route now. Another week of minimal time to workout. Leave for seminary 6:15 am, straight to work. It was a bad storm, for sure. Most folks down here had a "Well, it won't be as bad as Hurricane Ian" attitude. I don't think we took it seriously. But nearly every barrier island on the gulf coast, from Naples to the panhandle was covered in water. It looks like your area took a bigger beating than Florida. We got all the storm surge. You got all the rain, it seems.

Our house is ok. We got 8 inches of rain is all. Lots of downed trees in the area- I was helping clear roads today. One had 50 trees down in 400 yards. It was nuts. Lots of damaged houses.

The real damage seems to be in the mountains of NC, from what I hear. The news says they received 24-30 inches of rain. That's crazy.

Between BYU and in-state tuition for USU (mother is alumni), they are certainly much cheaper than anything in SC. Clemson and SC are both very expensive relatively.

Today was state cross country meet for my daughter's team. My daughter battled injury and illness all season so she there as one of two backups. The team was the favorite to win, and one of the girls (who I coached in middle school) was top 3 overall favorite.

Last year, our top runner fell on mud 1/2 mile in and broke her tailbone, but limped on, still finishing in 44th place. The team placed 3rd overall.

This year, our top runner fell on mud 1/2 mile in, likely overdid herself trying to catch back up, and her asthma flared up. She actually passed out and collapsed on her face with 400 yards to go, not finishing the race. The other runners generally ran ok (3 in the top 15 for All State award) but not enough to compensate for runner 1 not finishing. The team finished in 4th.

Rough year. 4th in state is good, but disappointing when you are one of the top favorites to win overall. There's lots of lessons from sports, but it doesn't make it easy when you're in the middle of one of them. If the top girl ran a normal race and finishes top 3, they win state. Tough to feel like you let down your team (even though it's really a team sport, and you sink or swim together). To have fluke incidents 2 years in a row that derail title hopes is tough. Although I told the girl that not many people can say they actually ran hard enough to make themself physically pass out, which is a high level of toughness.

Maybe next year we'll have to wear longer spikes? Plus I hear it will be at a different course, rather than this cursed one.

 

Later, went to gym for first run in a while, per PT instructions. Did 1 min run, 1 walk for 10 times, then 2 min run, 1 min walk for 5 times. 2 miles total running. Knee felt ok- we'll see if it's sore tomorrow.

Sorry about the fall for your runner and the tough finish. You are a good coach and will help the girls process this as just one part of their life (not old enough yet to have much hindsight) and that they can move forward. I know it is hard but congrats to your team for a great year and state race.

Thanks for the kind words, Jeff. I should note that I coach a middle school team, but this is my daughter's high school team, so I'm not the coach of this one. I have experienced similar, though (favored to win and not) and had to help my runners through disappointment like that.
