Ultimate frisbee on a 40 deg day. We had up to 20 people, so play 7v7 with 3 subs per side. Too many people. My team won 5-4. Then 8 of us did another game- won 3-2. About 80 min worth of playing- awesome.

Oh, and it's snowing tonight. They say up to 7 inches, but we'll see.

atlanta actually got a dusting -- the most significant since i've lived here. the streets are now covered in salt like a layer of beach sand. you can taste the salt in the air!

I miss southern snow days.

From Jon on Mon, Jan 09, 2017 at 22:46:18 from 96.33.87.148

We got 2-3 inches at my house. Most the town got 3-5. But they don't salt the streets here, so there's a few patches of ice. And, at least 2 snow days for the school (and counting)

Lunch- first time playing frisbee in the snow in 9 or so years. Fun times, even if my team lost.

Just finished watching the local team win a game. A little team named Clemson at some National Championship game. It was great. Lots of happy people around here. So technically, the Denver Broncos are reigning Super Bowl champs, and Clemson is reigning college champs. Pretty sweet.

Warning: Not for the faint of stomach

Memorable weekend with no working out. My 2 year old started throwing up (violently and repeatedly) Saturday evening (the first puke showed she can projectile vomit down 7 carpeted stairs and onto the floor below), then my 10 year old, then my 8 year old and 3 year old. It was terrible- lots of vomit, then dozens of dry heaves throughout the whole night. They definitely know what stomach acid looks like now. The 3 year old threw up so hard she popped blood vessels in her face.

My wife made two late night shopping trips to buy more carpet cleaner, then saltines and soda, then she threw up, too. I spent most of the night cleaning up and comforting kids, plus doing puky laundry. We put the two year old to bed only for her to completely fill her matress with puke- she was literally sitting in an inch deep puddle. Cleaned her up, put her back to bed (probably at midnight or so), and found her puke coated in the morning. I think I went to bed at 2 am or so.

The only not-sick child was the 5 year old, who is our early riser and woke me up at 6 am (bless his heart). I went to some church meetings then came home just in time for the 5 year old to start puking- Marci did go to church to teach, then I did two home teaching appointments. Other than that, it was a day full of cleaning, doing 6 or more batches of puky clothes and bed sheets, and resting. The kids basically sat on a couch all day, sleeping and watching tv (and I don't feel guiltly about it). I did watch at least part of all 4 football games, amidst all the puking and cleaning. Better games than last week, especially the Cowboys-Packers.

To top it all off, I started feeling bad Sunday evening and, sure enough, started throwing up just after midnight. I slept terribly and felt the same. I woke up at 5:30 am and writhed in pain on the bed for a few hours.

It's now midday Monday and I think we're all done with throwing up, though still very tired and weak. Needless to say, no working out, as I'm weak and even a sip of water sends my stomach into spasms. This is the type of parenting day they don't warn you about.

In case you're wondering, we had root beer floats Saturday with Walmart ice cream, and I'm pretty sure that's what caused all of this. Blah.

holy moly, that is an intense vomit frenzy. that's terrible that you were all struck with it. i hope everyone is recovering okay.

if you haven't already, you should report it to the health department if you think it's food poisoning. if it was truly caused by walmart ice cream, that stuff needs to be pulled and tested -- could make sooo many more people sick.

great games this weekend -- happy to see the packers pull it off and sad to watch the seahawks struggle so much. sad for the chiefs, too, but it was a great effort. bored with the patriots. they won, you say? what else is new.

From allie on Mon, Jan 16, 2017 at 12:28:00 from 71.56.28.146

ps - these are the types of parenting days that i read about on the internet which make me start backing up slowly and waving my hands in "no thanks" gestures.

plenty more good stories to balance it out, though. :)

From Jon on Mon, Jan 16, 2017 at 12:34:13 from 96.33.87.148

Yeah, I reported it Saturday night. I had the same thought.

I was rooting for the Packers and Chiefs, so good and bad. And I don't like NE or Pit, so can they both lose this week?

Even in the middle of bad days like that, when a 2 year old cuddles up on your lap, it's worth it. Kids are great, though not always easy.

Hey Jon,

I haven't looked at your blog in a while. How are you? It looks like you have had some injuries? Are you going to get back to some Ultras?

From Jon on Mon, Feb 20, 2017 at 19:50:05 from 96.33.87.148

Nic- I'm well, though not running much. An Achilles injury has kept me generally on the sidelines for 3 months, though I'm up to 4 miles at a time. Slowly working my way back.

I haven't raced in 2.5 years. I'd be surprised if I don't race again within a few years, though not as competitive as before. For ultras, who knows. Probably yes, but that's just a guess. They are a lot of work. Doubtful I do any longer than 50k unless I move near some mountains.

How's life in Hawaii? How are you?

So your ankle is better? Also, do you wear a GPS when you're playing?

From Jon on Mon, Feb 20, 2017 at 14:52:24 from 104.129.204.81

Rob- my ankle is still swollen and very purple and yellow from bruising. However, the injury Friday was from someone twice sliding down the ankle with his cleat when we were jumping for catches. There was no twisting/bending or structural damage to any bones/ligaments/tendons, etc. Basically, a bad bruise, not a sprained ankle. So it's a bit sore and stiff from the swelling but was structurally fine. Once I started playing, I didn't even notice it. It will probably be more swollen and sore tomorrow from the usage, but not a big deal.

I haven't used my GPS watch in 2 years. I just estimate the amount of running. It might be less, but it doesn't really matter, anyway. Though I remember Cody wearing a GPS once at frisbee and he ran further than I would have guessed. I do run a lot, and much of it sprinting. There's some fast guys I usually cover on defense who are energizer bunnies.

Lunch- 5v5 frisbee game. True to form, whichever team plays terrible at the start (mine, today) ends up winning the final game. We won 5-0. It was one of my better days in a while with some good luck on catches.

So today is our 13th wedding anniversary. We celebrated by spending $1600 on car repairs, not eating the turkey Marci prepared (it wasn't finished 8 hours after putting it in the crockpot so we had a pizza instead), and dealing with ornery kids all evening. Yeah for anniversaries. Maybe we'll actually go on a date or spend a few minutes together at a future anniversary.

It's the Whole 30 diet, so fruits are allowed (thank goodness, I eat a ton). So I guess it's not all no-carb.

I'm eating lots of meat and eggs, veggies, fruit, potatoes, tree nuts. Bacon! Avocados!

No processed foods, no grains of any kind (breakfast is rough without my oatmeal), no dairy, no sugars, etc. Of course, people have brought in more than the usual amount of treats to work, but I'm pretty proud of myself for abstaining for 2 weeks. Just 2 more to go.

Well, it's official. Shingles really does hurt. In case you were wondering. Wearing work pants and having to sit all day is the worst, but it wasn't enough to stop my from playing Ultimate. My team won 5-2 with the last point a full field bomb from me to Chris. Beautiful. My one dive was a huge mistake, however, especially since I landed on my back, which is where the biggest concentration of blisters are. Fortunately, they say the pain only lasts 3-5 weeks (!). This isn't going to be fun.

I'll see tomorrow how much running I can do. There are still more blisters growing on the inner thigh, which may stop all activity once they fully develop. This might be a long, painful month.

I'm officially crazy. I ran 10 miles this morning with Shingles all over my waist/back/left thigh. On the short list of most painful runs of my life- almost stopped in the first 2 miles, but then got used to it. The overall pain has gotten so bad, though, that I couldn't sleep last night, went to the doc for meds today, and plan to rest the next few days. Work clothes are extremely painful, so no work. Shingles is excruciating. The nurse said she sees shingle patients all the time and I have the worst she's ever seen, and the doc agreed it was terrible (you should have heard all the nurses talking in the hall...). Very painful.

Hope you get some relief soon. As for tips, as Riley. He had them twice in a matter of months as I recall.

From RileyCook on Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 09:26:14 from 172.58.38.137

Ah, shingles. Yeah for some reason shingles are somewhat common in younger (30s-40s) adults who are otherwise very healthy, but exercise a lot.

I got them on my face and eye, not fun. The antiviral works quite well and pretty quickly. So hopefully you're taking one. Rest up and it'll go away soon. Good luck!

From Jon on Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 10:04:20 from 96.33.87.148

Riley, are you saying the exercise causes/contributes to it?

I am taking the anti-viral.

Q: Is exercising with it just stupid? Does it cause harm or slow healing, from what you see? Or is it just painful but doesn't really matter from a recovery timeframe?

From RileyCook on Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 10:10:58 from 172.58.38.137

Well, I'm no expert. But from what I've been told, those who exercise a lot obviously can wear their bodies down. The virus is from when you got chicken pox as a child and it never leaves your body. It just goes dormant. But when you wear your body down as we runners often do, it can create an opportunity for the virus to re-emerge.

As for exercising with it, I think I took 1-2 days off, but I had a marathon a week later, so I didn't want to take too much time off. I still had some scabbing on my face for the marathon, yet ran a PR.

I am certain the pain is worse for you with it on your back etc. The shingles on my face were painful, but I've heard stories of people wanting to kill themselves with it on their backs, and my pain was no where near that level. On the face you mostly have to stop it before it goes in your eye, as it can cause blindness. So I was mostly worried about that.

I'd rest if I were you and let the antiviral start doing its thing for a day or two and then give it a whirl.

From Jon on Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 11:26:04 from 96.33.87.148

Thanks for the info. I'd so much prefer my face, as long as it didn't impact vision (that's the ultimate worst case). My clothes and movement and sitting/laying are killing me- it wraps the whole left side from back to belly button just at belt level, and then goes down from there (inner thigh- not fun), so wearing any clothes or sitting/laying down is excruciating.

I can't believe this may last 3-5 weeks, or longer. My aunt's nerve pain lasted 4 months. This is not going to be fun, but at least I know people like you have survived it.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesCrosstraining milesTotal Miles
0.000.000.000.000.000.00

I've finally admitted that shingles hurts and I probably shouldn't go running. I'll try to get a walk in today. I'm staying home for at least a few days. By low riding my pants and having my shirt tied up halfway with a hair band, I can reduce the pain at least somewhat.

I've been surprised how many people have told me they previously had shingles- my coworkers, boss, church friends, family. All agreed it is terrible.

I was asked to give a talk on Easter at church on being strengthened in our trials through Christ. Between the layoffs at work, shingles, and struggling within myself, I've got some good examples, now.

Quick question. If you don't have time to answer that's fine.

Why do people run races like the Barkley?

From Jon on Wed, Apr 05, 2017 at 19:33:22 from 96.33.87.148

I once did a presentation to a boy scout troop about life's lessons from ultramarathons.

For me, I enjoy running, I love being outside and seeing the sites, and it's a contrived way to push ourselves physically in a time of ease, which I think can help us see what we are made of. Some people enjoy challenges. The Barkley is the hardest of the hard, so for the people who really want to be challenged.

Let me ask this to you- why did you run the Grand Canyon? And what's your answer for the Barkley?

Did you watch the Barkley movie?

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Apr 05, 2017 at 20:03:51 from 67.166.78.47

I've watched the Barkley movie several times.

I ran the Grand Canyon because it was a challenge that I was fairly certain I could complete. I would put the Barkley in a different category.

From Jon on Wed, Apr 05, 2017 at 20:13:07 from 96.33.87.148

As Laz says, how do you know how far you can go unless you're doing something that you will likely fail. I mean, how often do we start anything where there is a real probability of failure these days? Even at hundreds, more than fifty percent finish. So to try something where one percent finish? Unique. That's part of the lure. To know you will fail, and be willing to find out how.

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Apr 06, 2017 at 06:28:08 from 67.166.78.47

"A man can live in this culture his entire life without knowing whether he's a coward or not. I think it's necessary to know"

- James Dickey (author of Deliverance)

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Apr 06, 2017 at 06:33:45 from 67.166.78.47

Here's what I think. We've engineered most of the stress and strain out of daily life. We're too physically comfortable. We humans have spent 99% of our history on this planet living very close to danger, being forced to confront it on a daily basis. Women used to EXPECT to die in childbirth. People got to Utah by dragging handcarts across a thousand miles of prairie and mountains. I think, with some of us, there's something deep down that misses this. I think the 20th century rise of "extreme sports" is mostly explained by this.

From Jon on Thu, Apr 06, 2017 at 08:13:11 from 165.156.40.48

I agree completely. That, and the physical rush (adrenaline)- our ancestors used to get that at life threatening moments, now we artificially create them.

Lunch- frisbee. Pretty warm, humid day, but minimal wind. They had me switch to the other team halfway through cause we were killing them. My new team ended up winning 5-3. I played pretty well- a couple bad throws, but generally on target for Def, catching, scoring, and throwing. Afterwards, a few of us were mutually complaining  on having to cover some of the other players who we categorize in the "runners" class, all of us fit, sprinting all over the field. We pretty much all agreed that we all hate covering each other cause we have to run so much. Fun, even game today.

Lunch- rough, rough frisbee game. 3 miles running first, then time for ultimate. We didn't do a good job splitting the teams and my team was definitely outmatched. We got whupped almost the whole time. We weren't playing well (bad throws, missed catches) and the other team had better players. We started the game to 5 and the other team immediately scored 2 easy points. I got very frustrated and was working my tail off chasing the disc, counting the thrower, etc. My team started playing a bit better but the score was still 4-2 them. However, with some kind of insane toughness, effort, and luck, we somehow won 5-4. It was tough, tough. After the game, almost my whole team was laying on the ground exhausted, and, for the first time ever, had a team rally after. Game to remember.

90 is your warmest day of the year?

From Jon on Thu, Jul 06, 2017 at 07:57:45 from 165.156.40.29

Looking at the weather station near my house, we hit 92 one day in March.

Last year, we hit 90+ 14 days in June. This year, not a single time. This global warming thing is skipping Greenville so far.

Lunch- a few degrees cooler than last week and overcast today, with almost no wind, so good summertime playing conditions. 10-13 people (a few injuries and early leavers). My team won 5-3. Really good game today all around, similar to Friday. No slackers on the field. However, the maxim held true- the team that was being outplayed at the start, wins the game to 5. My team was definitely outplayed the first 20 minutes with lots of unforced errors.

You're working on Pioneer Day????

From Jon on Mon, Jul 24, 2017 at 15:35:11 from 165.156.40.27

When I lived in Utah, I did not get Pioneer Day off, much to the amazement of many of my friends. Frankly, I was fine not getting it off. Even moreso now that I'm not in Utah.

I can neither confirm nor deny that non-Utah Mormons like me may or may not think that Pioneer Day is a bit overblown.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Jul 24, 2017 at 17:31:03 from 67.166.78.47

Although I am not LDS, I am a big believer in Pioneer Day. Other than Massachusetts and Maine with Patriots Day, I'm not familiar with too many states that have a holiday like this. I think it's important for societies and cultures to make a big deal out of shared struggles from the past. There are many reasons why it's important to study history but the most simple one is the fact that some people in the past did things worth remembering. We have lots of things, important and unimportant, that divide us. We need mort things that unite us. Mormons do this better than most people. So I become a bigger fan of Pioneer Day every year.

However, I still reserve the right to make fun of Mormon dorkiness at the parade. :-)

From Jon on Mon, Jul 24, 2017 at 20:18:53 from 96.33.87.148

I don't think I ever saw the parade.

From Jon on Tue, Jul 25, 2017 at 07:44:09 from 165.156.40.27

That is a good point about celebrating shared struggles, by the way, Rob.

From Tom K on Tue, Jul 25, 2017 at 09:17:57 from 47.206.60.114

We manufacture meaningless festivals in Florida at a preposterous rate. Gasparilla, Strawberry, Blue Crab, Mango, etc. Even in my hometown of Venice, we have a Sun Fiesta, a Shark's Tooth Festival, and we just finished "Christmas in July", whatever that is. I find myself jealous of the meaning in Pioneer Day.

AM- morning run, mostly on GE trail. 2 turkeys, 3 runners (looked like HS runners). Felt pretty sluggish at the start with 8:00 pace and thought of calling it quits. Started feeling better at 30 min, then felt real good at 45 min and picked up the pace quite a bit. Was running about 7:10 pace the last 3 miles or so. Then decided to actually do a little speed workout. Did 1 track loop (.68 miles) at 6:15 pace. Felt nice to run fast.

I signed up for the Moonshiner 5k, a night 5k trail race. I have won it 2 or 3 times, and it was my last competitive race 3 years ago. It will be my first race in over 2 years. I'm excited and actually feeling somewhat motivated to run well, on top of my 3x/week frisbee.

Ankle was hurting a bit, likely due to the shoes (400+ miles, 3.5 years old). Left them in the trash in the gym.

Lunch- Very uneven teams today- my team was definite underdogs, and everyone recognized the big disparity (they probably had the 4 best throwers, and all of them were fast runners, while my team only had 3 runners). During the first 30 minutes, we got skunked. But then the real game started, and my team somehow won 5-2, aided by a tough zone defense and lots of hard work and patience. It was not as dark as I thought it would be- the sky was purple and blue, not black, but you could see a few stars and planets. There were also strange-shaped shadows, shadow waves, and the diamond ring. Neat day, I'll definitely remember this one.

cool to be in totality right at home. i'm glad you got to see it.

97% in atlanta -- i read beforehand that anything less than 100% is literally the difference between night and day. based on the totality pics/videos i've seen, that is correct. it was still very cool, eerie, and interesting, but it was just not the same experience.

regardless, a cool day across america -- pausing to observe, and togetherness.

I'm enjoying my solo morning runs with podcasts. Not sure what I'll do when it's cold, dark, and rainy in the morning- probably sometimes outside, sometimes treadmill. Of course, treadmill is more enjoyable once NFL season starts so I can watch Mike and Mike. Although I'm doing my best to minimize time spent on football this season.

Lunch- ultimate frisbee. It's been a while since I had a bad game- Wednesday, for example, I was catching pretty much everything and all my throws were going where I wanted, even the long ones. Not today. Real stinker of a game- a few bad drops, but mainly lots of bad throws. Short, medium, long... bad. 20 people, so 2 games. My team lost the first one 5-1, then the second 5-3. Then we cobbled together 8 people for 1 more game, which we lost 5-3. Blah. Always fun, but a real stinker for me today. I have an iPod Nano 6th generation, my second of the same type. The first died after a few years due to the power button not working anymore (spring died so it would not pop back up). I've had this one 5 years now. I completely shattered the screen last year but I still love it. The Volume Down button stopped working today, though, and the power button is about toast, too. This makes me very sad as I love this iPod. It's a very nice size with a built-in clip for running, stores lots of podcasts (my listening item of choice during runs), and has an FM radio, which is useful as my gym uses radio transmitters to broadcast the sound for the TV's on display. I cannot find any reasonable replacements in size and with a radio, so will likely buy an iPod Nano 7, which is also discontinued but may still be available. It doesn't have the clip and is a bit bigger. I do not want to run with my phone as it is large and expensive, plus does not have radio for the gym.

If I could find new iPod nano 6's, I'd buy them all. Pity when good products disappear.

AM 3 run, then 40 min bike. Felt good on the run and was moving quicker than usual.

Lunch- tied the record for most ultimate players with 24. My team won the first game 5-3, then lost the next 3-5. Fun times. Lots of running, tired. Played pretty well today in the catching and defense front. Also fairly well on the throwing, though a few misfires, plus a few good throws that were dropped.

Lunch 18 people at ultimate, so 1 field. Nice weather. I rarely go into the end zone but had several long throwers on my team so spent a lot of time there. Caught probably 4 or 5 bombs for scores. And I think I only had 2 or 3 bad throws the whole time. However, when it counted, my team still lost. Doh.

AM- run workout, had to take kid to orthodonitist for free consulation. The consulation may be free but the subsequent work is anything but.

Lunch- frisbee. We had 24 last Wednesday but only 11 today. We played 5 vs 6, with everyone on the field. My team was down a person. Then a few left so we had 4v4 when it counted, on a big field. We had some bad turnovers right at the start and got down 3-0 after just a few minutes while completing only 1 or 2 passes. Then we calmed down and won 5-4. To be fair, we should have won based on the teams as we had a lot more speed.

Lunch- frisbee. My team won 5-4. Good battle.

PM- Ran the Moonshiner night trail race for the 4th time. I'd won it all 3 previous times but knew I would not today. This race was my first since Western States over 2 years ago. Was pretty worried about my shin. Wife and father ran, too. I really didn't know what to expect- I figured 20 min and top 10 would be amazing but unlikely (there are 300+ runners). Warmed up a few miles, then race time. I figured I'd go hard (first fast miles in 1+ year) and see what happened.

I found myself just behind the Honnettes at the first singletrack at .25 mile and kept a bit of a gap as I like to see the trail in front of me. I was breathing hard and my hands were already tingly, but I thought it might be sustainable. During the .75 mile road to the halfway mark, co-worker and frisbee buddy Jason passed me, but then I passed him and the Honnettes just before we hit the singletrack for the last 1.5 miles. I pushed hard on the singletrack and really felt great- I was able to go fast and did not feel like I was dying. I passed 2 guys within the first half mile, then was alone for a while. With about .5 mile to go, I came close to another guy, but then he picked it up a bit and held me off just as I started to run out of steam. Ran right next to a copperhead near the finish. Came in 19:55, which was a surprise, and found out later I was 9th overall and 2nd age group. Very surprised I was top 10- I thought there were probably 15 guys ahead of me. Overall I felt great, even my shin, and was very happy with my speed and placing. It was better than expected.

The guy just in front, Brandon, said he recognized me from a few years ago, except I "was a lot skinnier then" (ouch, but true). Then cheered in my dad to age group win and Marci.

It was a lot of fun to race again. If I can get my leg right, I'd like to do it more. This is a special race to me as running fast on trails at night is very unique. I carry a big light (3 AA batteries) in my hand to really light up the trail and show shadows. It works better for me than a small light on the head.

Very fun to race again.

AM- shin felt better than expected so I ran all 6 miles today. Foam rolling after was painful, though.

Lunch- I got beat up at ultimate today. I had a hard collision with another guy that made an audible crack heard by me and others, that ended with me laying on the ground with the wind knocked out of me and some very sore ribs. It limited my running the rest of the day. I don't think it as bad as the last rib injury, but still painful. I also blocked a very hard throw that bruised my hand. Like I said, beat up. But my team won 5-2.

Lunch- decided to try frisbee, knowing I'd be limited to mainly jogs with minimal fast running. I covered a few of the girls, but even then they could pull away from me a bit. I also pulled away a few times, even scoring once. One nice part about Ultimate is that everyone can play, no matter your level or speed. I was throwing well today so stayed in that role. My team won 5-3.

My guess is that the views should still be pretty nice. The foliage here is always nice but everything is so flat you don't get quite the effect you do in the northeast and other hillier areas. Have a good trip.

Went hiking in the Smokies the past few days with my father. We did about 30 miles in 3 days, including hiking to Charlie's Bunion and Mt La Conte. I had never heard of Mt La Conte, but it has an amazing system of nice cabins you can rent. My calves are sore, but especially my back thanks to complications from my rib injury.

Monday- AM bike easy, just to move the legs and get out some soreness

Lunch- frisbee. Still hampered in my speed, and playing seemed to make add to my soreness. My whole back is quite painful now. My team won 5-2, at least.

AM first workout in a week. 30 min bike, then ran a mile. Felt ok. Sluggish and ribs are not perfect, but good enough to not have sharp pains. Only ran one mile as I figured I'd play frisbee at lunch if it wasn't raining.

Lunch- 6v6 frisbee. We weren't playing well (especially me) but picked it up when the game started and we won 5-3. As opposed to being severely limited like last week, I kept pushing a bit more and found I could go almost full speed, at least for short bursts, but then being out of shape (2 weeks no running) would fatigue me. Still, big improvement, and it's only the last few days my ribs and back have not been moderately limiting or worse. I'll take it.

AM GE held another family fun run today. First was the costume contest (my 9 year old won a prize), then the race of somewhere around 5k. I had one teenager near me for the first half mile, then I was in front with the pace bike the rest of the way. We had to shoo 10 turkeys off the trail near the start, and several deer ran near racers. The RD had put lots of great halloween decorations all along the trail, some of which were pretty scary to my young kids. I ran moderately hard and won by a couple of minutes. I think my time was 20:30 or so. Marci and my 2 oldest ran, as well. Finally, the 3 youngest did the half mile fun run and loved it.

Layoffs on going at work. Some teams are losing 30-40%. Cuts will continue into next year. It's not a fun feeling- same as I had for 3 years in Utah before leaving there. On Q&A video with HR head today, someone asked what GE is doing to keep employees since other companies pay more and are doing better. The only reason she had was to tell us to think of the pride we have in working for GE. Seeing as companies today don't reciprocate much loyalty to employees, it's not much of a reason.

Saw a guy today running in shorts, tights, vest jacket, and stocking cap. It was 60 out!

From allie on Mon, Nov 20, 2017 at 16:12:03 from 172.4.198.186

it seems like anything below 70 degrees = winter for a lot of people.

i was pretty bundled up this morning at 30 degrees, but i still went with shorts (always!)

AM- 8. Saw about 10 deer and 10 turkeys. Ran right next to the turkeys, including an annoyed male. On the return trip, 3 females blocked the trail and led to me re-routing. Below 32 deg.

Lunch- ultimate. 6v6. My team was whupping the other team most the day, which, sure enough, means we lost. We were up 3-1 before the other team scored 4 straight, all to the same guy.

PM- Paris mountain with Aaron, Lynn, Jim, Seth, and even Barry (for the first time in a long time). Had to run with headlamp for more than half the run. Aaron's team is being reduced, so he's leaving GE this year- sad. He also took a very hard spill towards the end of the run. Ouch.

AM 6- low 30's. 5 deer, nothing else

Lunch- 7v7 frisbee. Fun game today, relatively well played. I wasn't throwing terrifically at the start but my team won 5-2. Then we did a 4v4 game that my team lost 3-2, though both our points were LONG bombs from me to a sprinting Adrian. That was pretty awesome.

PM- PM with Merle, Seth, Lynn. Seth dropped off before 3 miles, Lynn did the normal short loop, and I decided to join Merle for the full loop. Felt good. The first half was in the light and we saw 4 people. The second half was in the dark and we saw 20 or so bikers.

AM- 8. Ran right by a group of about 9 turkeys, including 3 toms, at the start of my run. First time I've seen 3 males. Also saw 16 deer during my run in small groups. On the way back, I armed myself with rocks and a stout branch for a fight with the turkeys, but they had moved 20 yards off the trail and didn't charge me.

Lunch- frisbee. 65 deg, gorgeous. 7v7, but not my finest day- I had a few open receivers in the end zone that I missed, and then I dropped the winning point at the end. We lost 4-5. Doh.

I saw a turkey at the park today and thought, "I wonder if that turkey is still bothering Jon." This one was solo, which is odd. I usually see them in larger groups (at my parents' typically). This particular one was mostly scared and opened its mouth at me (to hiss like a goose perhaps?).

I hope the announcement today from GE Power Systems did not affect you. Your location has gone through several layoffs recently.

Praying for you.

From Jon on Thu, Dec 07, 2017 at 14:39:36 from 165.156.40.38

Thanks for the prayers, Jeff. The announcement was actually a leak as to the number of layoffs that have been happening and are still continuing (indefinitely, for now). I survived the round of layoffs last week, so I'm still employed, though they've said more layoffs will be coming next quarter. Not exactly a fun time here.

AM- It was around 40 deg and supposed to rain, but I still went outside. Nice 8 miles on GE trails, which is where I run every morning these days. Moving faster than the rest of this week. 3 deer.

Lunch- In 36 deg temps with windchill in the high 20's and with a wintry snow/slush/rain mix falling from the sky, 9 of us were adventurous to play ultimate frisbee. It was a blast. We had one of the players switching sides- each time the team with 5 people scored, she went to the other side. My team won 5-3, scoring the last 2 points while down a person. Sweet.

AM- I'm intentionally doing a recovery week with lower miles. Felt good but only ran 6 miles instead of tacking on the typical 8+. 5 deer, plus 1 runner right at the start of the trail.

Lunch- 7v7. My team got our butt kicked during the warmup, with lots of unforced errors. Finally got it together and won 5-3 for the official game, even though I'd say the other team was better overall. Blustery wind plus sub-par play overall made for a bit of a sloppy day. My throwing was especially rancid today. Oh well, still won.

Lunch- frisbee on a windy day. 5v4, with my team having the extra person buy losing 5-0. It was painful.

I'm having sleep issues again. I haven't had more than 5 hours of sleep in 2 or 3 weeks, and often only get 3 hours. I'm awake most mornings before 5 am, often before 4 am. I'm tired. And stressed. I didn't get home Monday from work till 7:30, and I didn't get home last night from all my obligations until almost 9:30. I'm getting worn out.

Sorry about the sleep issues, you are not old enough yet to have old man sleep symdrome (like I have). Sounds like stress is a culprit. Wish I had an answer or suggestion to fix it (I am still looking for one for me and Kami).

You are in my prayers (likely that He is the answer).

PM- Everyone else was busy, so I ran solo at Paris Mtn. Figured I might as well go early and run in the light, so left work at 2:15. 70 deg when I started- nice weather, but I was thirsty the whole time (didn't bring water bottle). Ran the usual full loop plus a bit more. Lots of people on the trails. I think our normal 4:30-ish start time has us at a sweet spot when the dayhikers are gone but the evening mountain bikers aren't out yet, so we often go an hour seeing no one. Very slow run today.
