yeah, it's cold.

one of the very first things that someone said to me when i moved to atlanta was "you can just get rid of that jacket right now, you won't need it here."

lies.

The humidity makes the cold feel worse, I know that much.

We keep hitting the mid-teens this week. Cold. Not as cold as Utah gets, obviously, but still cold. Plus, I've gotten a bit soft (yes, I said it). The biggest issue for me is that insulation in the houses here isn't made for sub-20 temps, so our kitchen pipes freeze if I don't leave the water running all night. I have to do that at least 5 nights a year. Many of my neighbors have the same pipe issue. It's annoying.

AM- new pair of shoes, time to phase out of the old. Shoes last a lot longer when you only run half the mileage. 6 miles on the treadmill as I didn't want to run in the cold.

Lunch- great game of 6v6 frisbee today. Frozen ground made for hard, slippery footing. My team was down 4-2 but scored 3 straight to win. Good way to start the year.

AM 7. It was 13 deg this morning so I ran inside again.

Lunch- frisbee on a sunny, cold, barely-windy day. 7v7 with a sub on each team. We played to a 2-2 tie, then the next point took so long that most people had to leave when my team finally scored, so we called it a 3-2 win. It was 15 minute point or so. Then we had a 4v4 game that my team won 3-0. My left ring finger got hit and is very swollen, discolored, and painful.

PM- solo mid-afternoon run at Paris Mtn. It was in the low 60's the whole time- beautiful, and 30 deg warmer than the past 2 weeks. Very slow pace, trails quiet the first half, then lots of people the remainder. 11 or so miles. No idea on the time. I like not running with a watch.

AM 6 on GE trail. 8 or 9 deer. I finished the Hardcore History WWI series and am now onto the Persian series. Looking forward to hitting the final one, number 60. It's the only one I've never listened to.

Work continues to deteriorate. Lots of key people are leaving for other companies, on top of the layoffs. Jim Harper, who I've run thousands of miles with on the LR group, is leaving, plus Mike Fedor. I feel like the company may enter a death spiral at some point, where enough key people are gone that the remainder can't do the work, causing them to leave. This isn't fun.

Lunch- frisbee game. Another hard game- we got a little chippy. A few of the points were so long that when the score was 4-3, we said next point wins. My team scored, so we won 4-4. That was a first.

sorry. that is tough. the company i used to work for was going to hell in a handbasket for several years and it was just like what you describe -- people jumping ship or slowly getting laid off. luckily i made my escape when i moved to atlanta. they announced their shutdown about 6 months later. it can really take a toll on you when there's so much negative/stressful energy in the workplace. i hope it improves for you, or hope you can find an awesome gig elsewhere.

AM- 8 on GE trails on a cool, rainy morning. Drizzled the whole time. No people or animals till near the end, when I ran into the whole stinking flock of stupid turkeys. They did not seem happy (watched them attack a passing truck) so I re-routed off-road to exit GE through a fence and run the road past them. Not real fast, typical for these days. I don't know my actual distance, but I think I ran 66 minutes. One of these days I'll charge my GPS watch to actually map the trail.

Lunch- it snowed about three inches this morning, so I worked from home then braved the (not too bad) roads for lunch frisbee. It was a fun 3v3 game, so lots of running and not many cuts. My team won 5-2. Unfortunately, I was in charge of a meeting right after frisbee but had forgotten my work clothes, so put my wet clothes back on and worked from the gym for 3 hours. This being the south, school is cancelled yesterday, today, and tomorrow due to the minor dusting of snow. The roads were clear around town by Wednesday night, but the district includes some of the foothills near the NC border, and if there are icy roads anywhere, they cancel for everyone. Don't get me started.

Anyway, ran 6 miles on snowy, wet GE trails late afternoon. Ran by 3 deer and saw 1 coworker.

GE is in the news for all the wrong reasons right now, which is a bit unnerving. Talk of breakup, underfunded pension, layoffs, mismanagement, etc. Sad to see an icon imploding, and rough to be attached to it. More and more coworkers and friends are leaving.

Lunch- today was Jim Harper's last day at GE, as well as a memorial run for Todd. Todd was the founder and captain of the GE Greenville running team for over 10 years, taking it from nothing to the dominant regional power (2 win streaks of 40+ races, over 800 members), so people came to cheer him on, too, including signs. I ran 1 mile with the group then went to Frisbee. It was a nice day- 18 people. Some hard-fought points. My team was doing poorly at the start. Sure enough, we won 5-4.

Lunch- ultimate on a breezy day. My team had one guy who kept insisting on playing deep safety, which repeatedly left a thrower open in the middle of the field and frustrated the rest of us. We got down 4-2, fought back to 4-4, then lost 5-4. It was frustrating. Fun, of course, but still.

Lunch- 5v5 frisbee. The other team had 1 sub while we had none, and they had 3 fast guys while we had 2. It was a rough go of it, so much that they asked us 3 times if we needed to change teams (we galantly and stubbornly refused). The game to 5 started and they quickly got up 3-1. Then we valiantly battled and scored 3 straight- that was pretty awesome, even though we were still making a few mistakes. They scored a quick one, then we had a stupid turnover (the person receiver admitted she got cocky and thought it was an easy catch so relaxed, only to drop it). So we lost 5-4. Good battle, though. The game to 5 took almost 30 minutes.

AM - 2 miles run. Still felt ok.

Lunch- frisbee on a windy, windy day- wind from one end zone to the other that increased during the play, making it almost comically impossible to throw upwind. 18 people showed up and the field was still wet, but we made 2 games. On the first game, my team went up 4-0, then gave up 3 straight points before winning. On the second game, I chose to kick off but have the wind at our back at the start. It was a battle, especially once Claire left so I was the only thrower on my team. We battled to a 4-4 score before my team won. So we won the tournament. 45 min of official game play, vs usually 15-20 min, plus the wind meant extra running.

My throws were not great, especially at the start. After my third turnover at the start of one game, a girl on the other team jokingly said that she's glad Jon wasn't on her team. Of course, karma struck and she promptly dropped an easy catch, so I was able to then say, "I'm glad Haley isn't on my team."  Good laughs all around.

AM 5 miles. Felt ok

Lunch- my shoulder tendonitis (?) was hurting and it had been rainy, but I heard we had enough people for a game so I showed up. 4v4 on a short field. I couldn't throw backhand due to pain but my forehand was working very well. My team won 5-3. I'd say the teams were skewed towards my team today, to be fair.

AM 6

Lunch- fields were dry enough to play on despite two days of rain, but we made 2 small fields, each with 4x4, to stay out of middle muddy spot (caused by shadow of 1 big tree). Windy. I've been religiously icing my arm/shoulder, and it's feeling better though far from normal. Still restricting my play, especially backhand throwing.

I had a good team today. We won the first game 5-2, then played the other winning point. One of our guys immediately went down with twisted ankle, so we played the other team 3v3 and quickly got up 3-0. They brought on their 4th player, but we still won 5-3, despite being down. After both games were done, we cobbled together one more 4v4 game, which my team won 5-3.

They were doing a zone and we just didn't have the enough throwers to beat it. It was a 5-2 massacre, and it wasn't even that close. I got frustrated enough that I kicked a cone at one point. AM- had to do something physical as I'm going stir crazy not running. Did 30 min bike plus a lot of stretching my back.

I've taken to not publishing my blog posts recently. I'm composing and saving all of them, just never publishing. No one on the FRB has noticed yet, or at least no one has commented on my almost 4 week absence other than my mom. Just an interesting data point.

I'm not one to maintain regular contact with friends who move away. I'm finding I feel rather alone most of the time these days with almost no one to honestly talk to. I've run with people for most of my life, till recently. Now, I don't run at all due to injury, and pre-injury, I did every run solo. I've run thousands of miles with Todd, Jim, and Aaron, but they all left the company in the past few months, so no lunch work runs with them. The openness and cameraderie of running buddies is completely gone. I love my 3 days a week of frisbee (probably the highlight of my week), but you don't get the hours of open talking like during a nice run.

Work is rather stressful right now with lots of layoffs, forced retirements, and voluntary departures (I work for GE- look in the news if you want to guess the overall company morale). I try to not bring work stress home with me and be a drag on my family, so I don't really share much with my wife. Most of the people on my team are in other locations, so there's no one close to talk to here. The guy in the cube next to me is one of the few people I talk to about how we are feeling with work stress- we share thoughts and articles back and forth fairly regularly. Today, however, he said he was going to give me unsolicited feedback, then told me I've been  too much of a Negative Nelly with all the bad news and asked me to stop. So, I will- no more sharing feelings with him. It's pretty amazing that you can work in an office with hundreds of people yet sometimes go the entire day speaking to no one. Yet I'm working long hours, late- often till 8 or 9 pm. But still alone.

I feel like everyone has thoughts and feelings about work, stress, life, etc., and that we need somewhere to process/discuss/share them. More and more, though, I don't feel like I have anyplace to open up. The few people I can open up to have mostly left. I don't want to burden my wife. I've been struggling with depression for a number of years. I feel alone most of the time but then push away people. It's an interesting situation. I enjoy talking to people but feel like there's no one to talk to, no one who is interested.

Some may say that I'm being self-centered. I just need to stop looking inward and go help others. Probably a fair statement. Hard to do when you feel isolated, shut out, unwanted. Maybe I'm having a mid-life crisis and reverted to being a teenager with all their feelings of isolation.

I think the FRB is a reflection of my life and feelings- I used to have lots of real-life friends who were also on the FRB. There was lots of blog commenting. Now we've all moved apart, and the blogging and commenting has petered out. I don't know the last time I saw a FRB-er in real life, especially since Cody left FRB. 3 years, maybe, when I saw jtshad? Heck, even James and Allie just moved- I never saw them, but at least they were near. If I run or not, there's no one to know other than me. I'm not one for social media, but external encouragement can help.

In Utah, I had a lot of coworkers I was close to and we honestly talked. Here, only a couple, but the talking is very intermitent. Life can be lonely.

I'm not sure if I'll publish this or not. If I do, I'm not sure if I really want anyone to read it, or if anyone will. It's kind of a stream-of-consciousness post, I guess. I saw that Rob Murphy was having a rough day, though he didn't go into details. I think most of us struggle some or most of the time with all sorts of doubts/insecurities/trials, but we generally try to maintain a stoic, strong outer shell. I guess my shell cracked a bit today and a little of the truth leaked out.

I read your blog today Jon - in fact I read it most days. I don’t post too many comments but I really enjoy reading about you and your family and your ultimate frisbee games but especially the posts about the aggressive turkeys. :). Sorry you are going through a rough time lately. Sometimes I am reminded about a short piece called “so I went for a run.” Anyway - I think we are not too far from each other geographically. - when you heal up - I would love to go for a run. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.runnersworld.com/fun/so-i-went-for-a-run%3famp

From Jason D on Tue, Mar 20, 2018 at 18:30:23 from 73.144.91.168

I noticed that you hadn't posted in a while, but I am always hesitant to ask people given that it might be personal (since I don't really know anyone on the blog), whether it is injuries or other life stuff.

The problem with depression is that it tends to produce the very conditions that make it worse. For example, you note not seeking out friends or you push them away and isolate yourself. This tends to heighten feelings of aloneness and depression (alcohol has the same problem of heightening or intensifying the conditions of depression, but I know you don't drink). This is not a criticism of your behavior, as I do the very same thing and its a fairly typical issue (though no less serious for being typical).

It seems that friends outside of work would be the best bet (and it is hard making friends as an adult I think), but it sounds like much of your time is spent at work and therefore your meaningful friendships have been forged and and take place there or near there (the GE trail, e.g.). However, these friendships/outlets have been closed off for the reasons you mention above. Do I have this right?

It's possible your co-worker is trying not to think about (potentially deny) the situation though I do not know this person or the full context of the situation.

Can you connect with people who share a religious affiliation? You're a reader, how might you connect with people who share similar interests?

I've lately been seriously considering taking up my longtime (since childhood) dream of starting martial arts, but I worry I will put myself at risk of injury and miss out on my running.

Jon--I don't know you other than checking your blog once in a while. But your post resonated with me. Humans are pack animals. We need people and at least someone to love us enough to let us blow off steam. I hope writing this post helped. Thanks for publishing it.

Sorry for not commenting recently, though I do check you blog regularly. I did notice you had not posted, thought is was work/family related and noticed your foot issue.

Very deep post, please realize you do have friends and people you can trust and talk to. Life is a matter of balance with lots going on especially as you get older with more responsibilities (family, work) and increased stresses at both.

Lots of guys (since I am one) have some of the same feelings issues that you expressed, me included. There are guys here, and as Jason indicated reaching out to local guys in a trusting relationship is helpful but tough to find as we do not open up much. I have been engaged in a men's study at church for the past 22 weeks on Authentic Manhood which has been good and a good way to find other guys struggling with life issues. Let's chat, men need other men to talk to!

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Mar 21, 2018 at 08:22:52 from 163.248.33.220

Sometimes things just hum along nicely. You get in a predictable routine, friends you can count on, work/life balance more or less in harmony, life's stresses seem manageable, and then it all gets disrupted. Something throws a wrench into the whole thing.

Introspection is good. You have to be able to look inward and discern what you need for both the short and long term. Sometimes I have to slow down and ask myself "what do I need right now"? Sometimes it's as simple as grabbing my baseball glove and playing catch in the yard with Andy for 15 minutes. Hard to feel bad about anything when I'm doing that. Sometimes it's a 24 hour solo getaway which my wife is great about letting me do every now and then.

It seems like you have a pretty good handle on things Jon. I think you'll be ok. Let me know if you want to meet halfway for a run. I'd be willing to fly to Kansas City, split a room, buy you dinner, and try out some of those epic Kansas City trails.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. Bret, I enjoyed that So I went for a run- never seen it before. Things are generally worse when I'm not regularly running due to injury, like now- I think most of us are that way.

Jason, yes, lots of meaningful friendships are over due to people moving, etc. I need to find new friends- we all want friends, just need to reach out. I hope you do start martial arts!

Jeff, I'm going to call- I want to hear about this church study group of yours.

Rob, I've never heard of that book. I've just added it to my book list at the library.

Jon, I like your openness! But I have to be careful since I don´t know if I understand everything the right way. Everyone´s weak in his or her own way and I don´t think it is a weakness to tell about it.

Life balance changes with just small influences. Even one word or gesture can have huge effects. For me, I´m trying to give my best daily. One part of it is sport/running. It helps me being a better person also.

I hope you will find your way to feel better soon!

Jon - It sounds to me like you need a vacation to Hawaii. Come to Kauai and we can hang out. I don't look at other peoples blogs a lot but I'm glad I saw this today. I think we are pretty similar. I have struggled with anxiety and depression. A few years ago I was laid off. It was really hard. I packed up my stuff at the office went home and put on my running shoes and went for a long run. I know with your injuries you can't do that and sometimes it's hard to find the motivation. I hope you can heal physically and get back to some running. In the past when you were competing and writing all those reports it seemed like you were pretty happy. Anyways it would be cool to meet someday. Maybe you can get a job at the PMRF missile base on Kauai and move here.

late to arrive, but just wanted to add that i visit and read often, i've just stopped commenting almost entirely. FRB is very different than it used to be with the community & conversation element mostly gone.

then again, you read posts like this and you see all the people who are still out there. :)

i'm sorry you are feeling this way, and believe me, i can relate. one of the biggest reasons why we decided to move when we did was because i was having a really rough go in atlanta -- feeling lonely, isolated, and too far away from the life that gives me...life. that's not to say a move is the magic cure, just that i understand and hope you can find those deeper connections and friendships you seek (which i agree are very important, but seemingly harder to find after college/early career days).

anyway, thanks for sharing and i hope writing it out was helpful for you. it appears from above you have a lot of people who care about you -- e-friends definitely count! 99% of my friends are e-friends 99% of the year.

when we first moved to ATL, you left a few comments here and there about race suggestions and general enthusiasm for the SE. that helped a lot to feel like i had at least one connection (from an original blogger, no less!). we ended up leaving with a whopping two SE connections -- jon and bret. :)

wishing you the best, and i especially hope that everything with your job and the stress related to that is eventually resolved with a positive outcome.

AM- I finally ran. Granted, it was only 1 lap of the .68 mile GE track, but I ran. My back is starting to feel better. Lots of stretching/rehab

Lunch- 6v6 frisbee- warm (upper 70's) and breezy. My team was playing poorly during the warmup but killed it at the start of the real game, getting up 4-1. However, the other team scored 3 straight to tie it up. On the last point, I got a few yards heading deep after a turnover and Chris threw it long- I caught it a yard short of the end zone. 2 passes later, my team won 5-4. Fun day.

Lunch- yoga

PM- spent all evening running around fixing my wife's dead car battery that left them stranded at volleyball. Battery was still in warranty so I got it for free (sweet!) but the terminal was the wrong size to I made a late trip to home depot to buy something to jimmy rig it. Did it all in the rain, and auto parts store was 30 min away. Took 3.5 hours but got it fixed.

Hope things are better. Stay in touch. Looking forward to seeing you in July!

Lunch- hot day (80's) and windy. yoga then frisbee. 9 people, so we did 1 guy switching teams after the team with 5 scored. My team got whupped- the other team scored the first 2 points even though they were down a person. We finally calmed down and scored a few, but still lost 5-3. Drubbing. Scott and I were not throwing well at all.

Strange how quickly we've gone from 14+ people every frisbee game, and often 20+, to barely hitting 10 most days. I don't think any of the people were laid off, but people are under more stress and have increasing workloads. For example, another guy in my team is leaving. 2 years ago we had 11 application engineers. Now, we will have 4. I'm the senior most non-management AE on my team.

chiro, yoga, then frisbee. Hot- upper 80's. The other team was stacked- 3 of the fastest 4 runners, plus 2 good throwers. They didn't do a great job on capitalizing on their mismatchs, and insisted on playing zone defense even though they were faster and we had a few good throwers to break them. One of the better played games in a while, a real battle. My team went up 2-0, then down 3-2, then we scored 3 straight for the win. Very tired after, between the heat and extra running as I was the main downfield guy for my team but also had to split covering their 2 fastest guys. I'm pretty proud of this win.

Good news.

I've been on the blog since late 2011/early 2012 and I believe you have had that same profile pic and JUST TONIGHT did I realize who that fella is in the middle. I have seen a less flattering photo from that same trip but never made the connection. I had to zoom to confirm.

From Jon on Sun, May 13, 2018 at 21:25:44 from 96.33.86.208

Jason, yes, that's Cody, Rob, and me. If Rob looks bad, it's cause he had run longer (time, not distance) than ever before in his life. And we still had to turn around and go back. I have a pic of him with a mile to go, sitting down, head in hands, exhausted. But he made it all 48 miles.

I thought for sure I had read that report, but I think Rob had that as his profile photo for a while and maybe that is why it is familiar. That almost never happens- the other team had some unopportune turnovers, and kept getting mixed up on defense, often leaving me or others alone for long passes. We capitalized. Jason- the business part of it was in the booming metropolis of Rumford. So I flew into Portland, drove to Rumford (grabbing food in Auburn on the way up and back), and returned to Portland for the hotel. I didn't really see much at all.

From Jason D on Fri, Jun 01, 2018 at 10:24:15 from 73.144.91.168

That would not have been my first guess. Most of Maine is made up of small towns like that. Rumford is twice the size of the town I grew up in. Portland is the largest city at around 60,000 I think (that's city population, not the metro population, which is probably 4-5 times that).

No. Been meaning to. I know the story pretty well, though.

You watch it?

My favorite quote from his race report this year:

We were essentially fording a river, through a tunnel, at night, under a prison. It was right about then that I started questioning where I’d gone wrong with my life? Up until that point I'd mostly believed that I'd made reasonably good decisions with my life, but in retrospect, my epiphany was that I’d just managed a positive spin on a series of really bad decisions. I do really stupid things, and I do them with stunning regularity.

We could have still been competitive had we played better, but none of us were throwing well, and we had several inexperienced guys who were clogging the cutting lanes. Game to 5 started and we were quickly down 0-4. We then scored 2 before they finished the game. It was not the funnest game and kind of frustrating overall. Oh well, still fun, just not as fun as normal.

Am 4 easy around home. Hot. 34:30 or so- I'm pretty slow these days. Marci was gone all week at girl's camp, so I stayed home with the kids. I'd get the last of them down at 9 or 10 pm, then work late into the night trying to make up my lost hours, so it's been tiring. Last night, I went to bed at 10:30 but only slept 2 hours before being Marci accidentally woke me up as she got in bed. I was up till past 4 am. Even when I have time to sleep, I can't.

Taking the whole family to see Incredibles 2 today. First time our whole family has seen a movie together. I'm even getting popcorn.

Lunch- 10 people on the hottest day of the year (95 deg temps, 103 deg Feels Like). I actually felt good, though, wasn't bothered too much. Of course, I didn't do too many full field sprints. I played pretty well today- throws were a bit long at first but then improved, so I threw 3 of our 5 points. My team won 5-3.

[furtively knocking on wood] Yes, seems to be. This is the first week I've run before frisbee again, and I'll have 5 runs this week, which is the most in months.

I'll be in SLC for 43 minutes on July 3, by the way.

AM 4 miles with Ken and Heather on GE trail. 1 deer, 1 turkery. I also saw 2 female and 8 or 9 baby turkeys on the drive in right by the trail

Lunch- 13 people for frisbee. Other team had a sub. My team definitely had more fast guys, but their team had 4 good long throwers. Very competitive, always within 1 point. My team pulled off the 5-4 win. I had a near collision at full speed with Benson (who broke my ribs once), so am glad to avoid serious injury. I did dive once, though, and came down hard on my elbow, leaving my ribs a little sore.

The canadian geese had a huge party on the field- it has poop everywhere. Anytime you went to the ground you came up smeared in goose poop. Lovely.

My last game for 3 weeks. I leave tomorrow for 3 weeks in Idaho. My family has been there for 8 days already, while I've been home working and doing the honey-do list till midnight every day.

Lunch- not a week to remember for my frisbee play. 17 people, my team had 1 sub, other team had 2. Lots of good players. I played better than Monday but still poorly- I dropped a beautiful long bomb, another touchdown, and had a number of bad throws (not as many as Monday, but still too many). Plus the guy I was defending caught the winning score. My team lost 5-4. Like I said, not a week to remember.

I often spend a few minutes before a game mentally picturing myself playing well. I haven't done that for a while, and I think it helps when I do. I used to do that before big ultra races and it prepared me for the adventure ahead.

After 2 weeks, I finally had a game where I feel like I played great- no drops, good short and some great long throws, and a number of defensive blocks. The teams were a bit skewed with my team having a small advantage on speed and throwing (the other team declined a swap) but fairly even 7v7. At the game to 5, my team had some very lucky throws/catches (I'd say 3 of our points were off trash throws). We won 5-1 in a drubbing.

4v4 for second game which was definitely skewed towards my team, and we won 3-0 ending with me throwing long to Strode for a sliding catch in the endzone with his wife watching. The catch of the game was Alex somehow snagging a poor hammer off the ground for a score- I still don't know how he caught it. After 2 roller coaster rides at the start, I was nauseous and sweating profusely. I spent the next 4 hours lying on the grass. Finally joined in for the water park in the afternoon and then 1 more roller coaster, but that was it for the day. My girls had a blast, I'm just glad I didn't puke. Teams were probably stacked a bit towards my team, 7v7 with each team having a sub. Fairly even warmup, but then game to 5 started and my team dominated. The other team made a few costly turnovers, and our speed started frustrating them which generally results in forced/poor throws. We won 5-0.

Lunch- not as hot today, a little breeze. 6v6. The other team had better throwers (my team had the 3 weakest) but my team had a bit more speed. Good battle with some long points. We played tight defense but they had good passing, so it seemed we were on defense for long stretches, would get a turnover and almost immediately give it right back, followed by another long defensive stand. We were down 2-1, then up 4-3, then tied 4-4. Both teams had chances to win, but my team finally scored the last point to win. Fun, tiring game.

AM 4- saw a fox right at the start, then 4 deer and 7 or 8 female turkeys. No people

Lunch- frisbee game 7v7. Hot, hottest day in a few weeks. Wore some short, split-leg shorts just for fun. Both teams played poorly, but especially my team- we had a comically large number of bad throws and drops. We got killed in the warmup. In the game to 5, we also were down 3-1 and 4-2. Tom and Dennis kept getting open for passes, at least. I threw away some bad ones. Then I had a long bomb to Tom that he made a great catch on, and we started chugging back. Didn't play a ton better, but the other team started overthrowing it in the endzone. We worked our way back to a 4-4 tie, then we somehow got the winning point. One of the poorer games for me where my team stunk but we won. I guess I'll take it, but I prefer it when we all play better. Oh well, still fun.

Any thoughts on physical therapy? They can't fix everything, but they can sometimes work some magic. I went after 4 years of a minor hip issue and was straightened out. It's now wonky but that was from being lax for a week and riding in the car for 16 hours.

Lunch- hot again, 12 people for frisbee. As poorly as I played on Monday, I played that well today. Other than a couple of exceptions, my throws were on par, I didn't drop any, and played good defense. I think I threw or caught all but 1 of my team's 5 points. Nice to be throwing well today. The teams were pretty even (the other team said they thought they had a slight advantage, but I don't agree). Game to 5 was tied at 3 before my team scored 2 straight for the win. Then we did a 10 person game to 3, with my team winning 3-1. Felt much better about my play today.

Achilles/heel is bad enough that I've started icing it again. It seemed to respond to the ice.

Lunch- 5v5 on another hot day, plus my team had a sub. My team was struggling with throwing and catching at the start- comically bad. I had a lot of bad throws to open people, dropped one, and even tripped over my feet and fell down. Game to 5 started and we did a better job being patient and making good throws. We were down 2-1 but came back and won 5-3. Controversial finish on a catch near the end which was ultimately ruled good and then my team scored.

Highlight of the day- I was covering Mike Sherman when he went up for a hard hammer catch but tipped it up accidentally. He landed and leaned forward, putting both hands behind his back, and the disc fell right into his hands. It was awesome.

Lunch- mid-70's today but very humid. 14 people showed up, though the teams were not evenly split (I'd say the other team had 1.5 more fast guys, and then the other team had their slowest player get injured and leave, so we had to start subbing out people, which really skewed it when one of our few fast guys were out). I would have been surprised if we won.

I played really well, though- my throws were generally on-target, including a bunch of long ones early, I had some good catches with no drops (several ankle height catches), and good defense. Game was tied 1-1 before the other team scored 3 straight. My team scored 2 more to make it a bit competitive before losing 3-5. We just didn't have the speed so there were some big mismatches. I was able to trash talk Dennis, who I covered all day, as I scored several and he never did, plus I caught a long bomb over him with some great boxout technique. Plus when I was subbed out, Dennis absolutely rocked my team (at one point intercepting 3 passes on the same point), but I shut him down when I returned. He and I have a friendly rivalry going for a while now- I won the individual battle today, but his team won the game.

Fun day.

Lunch- cloudy but warm and humid. 13 people but Scott left as he was feeling sick. My team was struggling during the warm up with some bad throws, and a few guys with lots of drops (the other team had drops, too). In the game to 5, we were up 4-3 but stalled 3 or 4 times near the endzone with drops or forced throws (a few by me) and ended up losing 5-4. We should have won this one. Sam was on my team and doesn't think he's won a game in a month.

Lunch- frisbee 19 people, so 2 fields. Somewhat windy due to coming hurricane. For first game, my team had better throwers but the other team definitely had more speed, and that was before their slowest person and one of our fastest guys left. The 3 other guys on my team were all outmatched on speed. We were down 4-2 but then really cracked down on unforced errors while the other team had some bad throws. We somehow came back for 5-4 win. Tiring.

The other field had someone sprain the ankle right at the end. Between the heat and long games (due to wind), no one wanted to play another game.

10 people for frisbee, my favorite number. The other team had better throwers, pretty even on speed. Hot but overcast and very breezy. The frisbee gods did not want my team to win today- it was humorous how many of our throws would get caught by the wind or turn the wrong way, while it seemed like every long throw by the other team would turn just perfectly to their catcher, or every tipped disc would go right to them. My team had a large number of bad throws and other self-inflicted wounds today, too, but fate was definitely not on our side. We were down 4-1 before scoring 1 more, then were defeated. 5-2. Blah- every tipped disc I had today still went to Dennis. Oh well. Still fun, but some days are more fun than others.

14 people for frisbee. Still hot- it's usually not this hot still this time of the year. I refused the split the teams so the method they used ended up with fairly uneven teams- my team was weaker on speed and throwing. We gave it a good effort, though I had 3 drops, while I usually have 0. My throwing was better, though I didn't throw any long (that was a pre-game decision). I've been trying to improve my forehand throwing.

Game to 5 started and we had a few bad turnovers and were outplayed, down 4-1. We scored 2 more before getting beat. I think I caught 2 of the 3 points on my team, but also gave up 2. Fun day, not my best play (too many drops- I didn't do my normal pre-game mental warmup, so I'm blaming that).

Well, interesting day for frisbee. We had 17 people. I was on red team, covering Dennis. Then, about 15 minutes in, Dennis ran it to try to intercept a disc to someone else, got upended, and came down on his arm. He broke his arm or wrist (or severely dislocated his wrist). Ouch. Julian took him to the doctor. The red team was killing the other team, so Claire and I swapped teams. Red kept killing blue team- they were up 4-2. My blue team had way too many bad throws and a few drops. We made a comeback and tied it up 4-4, but then lost in the end. Too many bad throws. I think I only had 1 turnover in the game to 5- a throw into the endzone hung up too long and was knocked away. Pretty good game for me, otherwise- no drops, generally good passing. But I don't like 14 people on the field- too crowded. My prefer 10 or 12.

Lunch- GRRRR. Let one slip away today at frisbee. I had a meeting run over so was 10 minutes late, no warm up. 5v5, though the other team definitely had more skill/speed, and I would have been surprised if we won. We got killed in the warmup, though I had some great, very difficult throws. Game to 5 started and my team was doing a great job of playing- we were up 4-2, surprisingly, with 3 of those scores passes from me to Jeff, and one an amazing catch by Alex. The whole game, though, I kept slighly misfiring on long passes to Tom when he was open in or near the end zone. Dang it. The other team battled back, tying it up. At the last point, my team had 2 drops near the other team's endzone, and they capitalized by winning. We had multiple chances to win but just couldn't convert. I played generally good defense, good catching, pretty good throws except some terrible misses to Tom. Dang it- really had a shot today at an upset and blew it.

Ran this morning. Achilles felt good enough. Left hamstring was very tight- my stride length felt like it was 6 inches. And slow- 9:30-ish pace the whole time. I did feel good enough to do 6 miles instead of 4, though. Saw 7 deer, a flock of 10 turkeys, then another flock of 10 turkeys 200 yards away. Had to make a bunch of noise to get them off the trail, but they were all female so moved out of the way. I've never seen more than about a dozen turkeys before, and I saw 20 today. Gobble gobble.

After so many people recently, we only had 7 today. Took a few minutes to decide what to do- ended up splitting 3v4, with a few of the newer/slower guys on the team with 4. They had a brand new guy who missed a lot of catches and had some throwing issues, and some other guys on their team kept dropping catches, too. My team had more throwing issues- it was windy and we kept trying long throws, which wasn't working. I did have one awesome diving catch where I really had to hustle and caught it just off the ground with 2 fingers. My team was up 4-2 in game to 5, then we kept having bad throws and the other team tied it. After some back and forth where both teams had chances to score, we got the winning point. AM- 8 miles on GE trails. 7 deer, 2 people, no turkeys. They mowed the path this week so it's nice to no longer have to run through knee-high weeds at parts. I felt great this morning- bit of a slow warmup but soon was running 8 min pace and even 7:45 pace. Finished in a good mood.

Things have been a bit rough at work. GE unexpectedly fired our CEO this week after only a year in the job, and the GE Power business (mine) continues to drastically underperform. They also announced a $23 Billion write off from GE Power (that's Billion, not million). Really no good news coming from anywhere. We've had 1 pay increase of any sort in 4 years, I'm sure we won't have any in 2019, and our benefits keep costing more- I recently calculated that health care premiums have gone up 775% in 7 years. Ouch. Super ouch. I enjoy my job and love playing frisbee at work, but the high-level business stuff is a real drag.

On a humerous note, the manager of the GE gym showed me an old comment card I submitted years ago. I wrote, "The treadmills unexpectedly stop at 99 minutes. This can be dangerous when running 10 miles per hour." On the back, I penned my own expected response from the health club: "Get off your lazy butt and go run outside. Also, stop running so much."

It was good for a laugh this morning. And, I do every run outside now and also don't run near as much.

Sorry about the job woes. They say the job market is hot (if you are looking for one) but being on the job right now appears to be a challenge for many trying to "do more for less"...less people, less compensation but more stress, actions, etc.

Hang in there.

From Jon on Thu, Oct 04, 2018 at 08:36:12 from 165.156.40.49

Yes, Jeff, everyone is getting squeezed. It's hard to know if there's better situations than the known situation of where you are now.

One of my old running buddies left GE about a year ago. Still no job. Another left, and later, when asked if the grass is greener on the other side, replied, "I don't know if the grass is greener, but there's more grass to cut." I heard he lost his new job a few months later. So sometimes looking elsewhere is not the sure step up we'd hope.

Lunch- one of my more frustrating games of frisbee in a long time. My team had more skill. 5v5 first game. My team was up 4-3 but lost 5-4. My catching was fine but had an extreme overabundance of terrible throws. When it was 4-4, I threw away an easy pad then my guy scored.

2 people left and we played again. My team should have won (Adrian on the other team called us the dream team). The other team was incredibly lucky- their first 3 points were all TERRIBLE hammer throws that somehow were caught. But I was attrocious all around. I had many easy throws that I just terribly mis-fired on. It was comically, frustratingly bad. Multiple throws into the endzone that just stunk. I caught 2 scores and threw another, but that was all. On the last point, I threw a bad pass to an guy cutting into the endzone, we got it back, I had another bad pass into the endzone, we got it back, I was blocked on a throw, then my guy caught the winning pass. We lost 3-5. It was terrible and I'm so frustrated. For the past month, I've been going out early just to practice throwing for 15 minutes and have been taking tutorials. I can throw just fine during warmup, but when the game starts, the only thing I can do is toss up stinky, fly-infested, ugly, twice-eaten, vomit-filled dog poop throws.

I'm in a bad mood now. I don't mind losing a good game. But when I play this poorly, I'm just pissed at myself. It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but it's a bad start to a weekend.

It's a bit rainy with a hurricane coming so only 7 people showed up. We did the normal setup of a rotating guy who switched teams each time the team with 4 people scored. Even teams, fun game today. It went back and forth till a 4-4 score, then Scott stepped off so we played 3v3 for the last point. My team received the kickoff and scored for the win. Lots of running today, fun game. I don't think I had too many bad throws today.

Hurricane with winds/rain tomorrow. We'll see how much this one impacts us.

AM Tropical storm Michael is passing through. It's rained 4 inches this morning with blustery winds (gusts up to 40 mph). In other words, great day for a run on the GE trail. To be fair, I've run in thunderstorms with far more rain and wind, and I've done 50 and 100 mile races with more rain and mud. I had a great time, splashing through the water and singing to myself (song of choice: Shallow), including air drums. I'd say I was running in standing water at least half the run, and at least a mile of it would better be described as wading. Saw 3 deer and 2 turkeys, no spiderwebs. Thoroughly enjoyed myself. I didn't wear a watch but did just under an hour, so call it 7 miles. Fun, memorable.

Stay safe as well.

75 deg is nice temp to run in when it's raining. The standing water is what made it fun.

It's less enjoyable to run in a strong rain when it's 40 deg.

10 people for frisbee today. Temps have finally dropped - 65 deg today at game time with a blustery, intermittent wind that added a bit of adventure. Both teams had a number of drops and some bad throws with lots of back and forth, turnovers in the endzone, etc. My team was up 3-1, then down 4-3, then we finally won 5-4. I had a few knockdowns on defense on long throws to Adrian, Tom, and even tall Alex in the endzone (the last one was on game point). 1 drop, and a number of bad throws. But overall very fun game today.

Yesterday was my 40th birthday. I can no longer claim to be young. Started it off in fashion with a 6v6 frisbee game. There was a brisk wind from endzone to endzone, and the first 4 points were simply the team with the tailwind scoring. My team finally broke the other team and scored into the wind, then again with the wind at our back to make it 4-2. We won 5-3. Good game today, lots of back and forth and not as many drops. I made a few pretty good throws, few bad ones, one very lucky one. No drops, a few scores, and one epic diving/sliding long catch. Rob on my team had a particularly good defensive game. Fun time today.

Jeff,

I definitely know I'm older, and mentally feel different. 40 is old enough to no longer claim to be young.

11 people on a nice day for frisbee. At first we only had 6 people but then more trickled in. Other team had sub. My team was up 4-1 but the other team was playing a good zone defense and scored 2 straight before we won 5-3. I generally played well- 1 drop, pretty good throws. Gorgeous day for frisbee- mid-60's, sunny, and a intermittent but fairly light breeze. 15 people, other team had sub. They had better throwers and more speed but we had more experience. Pretty even. Very fun games today- I had a few risky throws that sometimes worked out, sometimes didn't. Adrian was catching well today- he and Tom scored most the points. Back and forth in the game- my team was down 3-2, then scored (all 6 points with the wind), then finally broke the other team to score into the wind, and then another point for a 5-3 win. I think I scored the winning point and threw 2 or 3 more.

Did a 3v3 game to 3, I was the only one on my team with energy so ran a lot. Got a few knockdowns on Alex, which was nice. My team was up 2-0, then they tied it 2-2, then my team won. I'm on a 7 game win streak, I think.

Very fun today. Days like today are why I enjoy ultimate.

No run yesterday- at Great Wolf Lodge with the family, so tired from walking up all the stairs (especially my achilles).

Frisbee today- perfect weather, 65 deg, sunny, a little breeze. 16 people eventually showed up, so a crowded field with 7v7. Not the crispest games with lots of knockdowns and missed throws, but the other team made more mistakes and my team won 5-2. I played ok, scored a few, threw a few, but a couple of mistakes. Also ran into a few guys.

Then did 5v5, which my team won 3-0. I'm a bit sore after.

10 people at frisbee. Some days you play well and lose, other days you don't play well and lose. Today was the latter. I generally played well, but my team had issues overall- we kept moving the disc well until the throw into the endzone, at which time we repeatedly threw difficult throws that weren't caught. We did this 4 times and were down 0-3. We fought back to 4-3 before losing. Too many unforced bad throws.

Having some existential thoughts today. Pretty frustrated with work- been promised a promotion for 3 or 4 years that has not emerged. My manager and his boss have repeatedly said they want to get me presenting to the boss 3 levels up, partly to help with the promotion. I was scheduled to do so again today and had worked on the presentation for a month. But, for the third time in a row, people before me took too long and they ended the meeting just as we reached my presentation. I'm very frustrated.

In addition, work is ridiculously busy right now, with way too much work and way too little time to finish it. I get to work at 7 am every day, and usually don't leave till well after 6 pm. Others work far fewer hours- some leave at 3 pm every day. And what does it get me? Nothing. The company doesn't care a whit about me. There's no recogniztion, no thanks, no extra benefits, nothing. They'll chew us up, use us up, and spit us out. What's the point, seriously. I'm just sick of all of it. They keep overloading me with projects that normally need a month, and telling me it is needed in less than a week. And I have multiple of these at the same time. It's the new normal in the past few months. I meet or exceed literally every expected deadline and metric (every measureable result of mine is well above expectation and department average despite huge volumes and the most complex projects), and it don't mean squat. I'm legitimetly close to throwing in the towel and walking away. Just tired of it. I want to feel like I'm contributing to something that is making a difference and growing, not something that is slowly dying and sucking the life out of me. Pay is decreasing, and the whole company is struggling- just take a look at the news today (GE earnings fell short of estimates, dividend cut 88%, $22 billion write down in my division, new SEC and DOJ investigations). It's a mess. The old CEO kept saying that GE has a long history and legacy for us to build on... but so did Sears, and it just went bankrupt.

65 deg and a little breezy for ultimate. 6v6. My team was misfiring on some throws- not as bad as Monday, but definitely some mistakes. In the game to 5, we scored first but someone on the other team called a foul, nullifying our goal. Then the other team scored, we turned it over on our goal line, and they scored again. After that we traded points till they won 5-3. We had our chances but couldn't pull it out. Still fun.

Left work a bit early for the holiday, spent 2 hours walking with the kids as they trick or treated. So much candy.

Lunch- it was rainy but warm (65F), and five brave/hearty/crazy people joined me for frisbee. We were very happy to get enough for a game. Scott, Dave and me vs Sam, Alex, Ty. It was a fun time with the rain going hard to soft and with some wind. A fair number of drops, partly due to the wet disc, and it makes throwing interesting, too. For the game to 5, the other team scored first and we traded points till 2-2, when my team finally broke the other team and scored into the wind. Then the other team scored into the wind, 3-3. There were some long points in here, with the wind and only 2 catchers. Then my team scored, forced a turnover in their endzone, and I ran solo (everyone else was tired) while Scott tossed a bomb to me. I was trying to track the disc over my head and stumbled twice in some of the dips in the field, almost falling. I somehow stayed on my feet and caught the winning point just in the endzone. 5-3 final. Everyone agreed it was a fun day. I dove and slid 4 or 5 times. The first time coated me in goose poop, but subsequent slides removed the poop.

Fun day.

AM- I didn't have to be at work till 9 but woke up at 5, and missed a run this week, so decided to run GE trail. Coldest run since last winter- 32 deg. 1 loop GE trail. Saw 6 deer, 2 coyotes (one who took similar path as me so I saw him 4 times over a mile), and 26 turkeys. I think that's the most turkeys ever. They were at the turnaround point, and included 1 tom, which is the first male I've seen in a year or so. Of course, he puffed up but I was 50 yards away so he didn't chase.

Lunch- some games are ugly, and some games are worse. Today was worse. Very muddy field, 14 people, lots of turnovers but especially lots of bad throws by my team.We threw it over a dozen time to Alex on the other team. It was terrible. The only good thing about my game was I didn't drop any. But it was ugly. I think we lost 5-1, maybe 5-2. Then we did game to 3, where my team had 6 people and other team had 5. I thought we were down 2-0 and lost 3-1, but the other team said it was 2-1 so we kept playing and, despite our best efforts to repeatedly throw it away, we did win 3-2. Ugly.

I quickly discovered that my throws were doing great today- I had a bunch of throws that snuck by the defense, almost everything was on target whether short or long, and only a couple bad throws. No drops, pretty good defense, too. My team was getting whupped during the warmup (I think the other team scored 6 of the first 7). We started playing better and won 5-2 at the end. For the game to 5, my team started with the wind at our back. We scored first, then scored into the wind. Then the other team scored into the wind, then with the wind. We traded points the rest of the way, always favoring the team with the wind... which means my team scored last, 5-4. Tom had the most amazing catch of my bad throw. Fun day. Cool, nice day for frisbee. 11 people so my team had the sub, unfortunately (I prefer to have no sub. It was especially bad today because I was the fastest on my team, so when I subbed out, my team couldn't match up with the other team). I was throwing very well today, plus had some fun long catches early on. For the game to 5, I was almost able to intercept the first point but Haley somehow caught it just as I got there (I wasn't covering her). Then we traded points all the way till the other team won 5-4. When it was 4-4, Tom had a nice run and I was throwing it long to him for the win, but Kevin blocked my throw. I hope it bruised his hand :) Fun day.

AM- it was 28 deg. I didn't wear my pants and only had 1 long sleeve layer on top. I should have had more. You're dressed properly when you are a bit cold the first 10 minutes but then warm up after that. I never warmed up. Cold, not enough clothes. Slow. 8 miles in just under 70 min. 7 deer, no turkeys or people.

16 people for frisbee. Cool, a little breezy, overcast and wet grass from morning rain. I generally played well. We traded points till 3-3, then my team scored 2 straight for the win. 10 people stuck around for another game, which my team won 3-0.

65 deg and breezy for frisbee. 18 people showed up- two subs per team. Too many people. I like 10 or 12 best. I played ok. My team won 5-3.

AM nice morning for a run, upper 30's, not too much mud. 8 miles, 8-9 min pace. 3-5 deer, no turkey or people.

Frisbee- a bit cooler, 40 deg and breezy. Field is still muddy in spots. 13 people, my team had sub. My team had 6 people over age 40, other team had 1. We were up 3-2, then we won 5-2. Both teams had some not-smart throws, but they had more. I played fine. Dennis was back after breaking his arm 3 months ago.

AM 23 deg this morning so I finally broke out my running tights. I think I even had a beardsicle for a while. 8 miles. 20+ turkeys, 3 deer.

Layoffs at work again today. 10% of workforce. Several people I work with or who sit near me hit. And likely more to come- they've sent every non-engineer Senior and Executive level employee an offer for voluntary job elimination. If they don't get enough volunteers, more layoffs will follow. I don't know why they let the non-engineers volunteer to leave while doing non-voluntary layoffs for engineers. I don't really want to repeat today.

Man, sorry for the continued issues with with work and the culture/environment. Tough to stay motivated and focused on work (especially high visibility projects) with that going on. You are in my prayers.

Lunch- 19 people today so we played 2 fields. Low 40's, overcast, minimal wind. My team was me, Adrian, Tom, Claire, and Kevin, so pretty stacked. We won the first game fairly easily, as I would have expected. I overthrew Tom a few times in the endzone and dropped one hard catch, but otherwise played well. For the championship game, the other team was stacked- Graham, Matt Page, Verdin, Dave, and Tye. They got up 2-1, but then I think they got a bit tired and slowed up, so we scored 4 straight for the win. Our team played well together today with not too many mistakes.

I woke up at 4:38 am again today. In the past 5 days, I've only slept more than 4 hours once. When I wake up early, my brain is thinking too much and too stressed out about work to get back to sleep. I'm working some very stressful, high visibility, critical projects right now that are all a mess, so it's definitely an adventure.

PM- work closed due to 3 inches of snow yesterday (and power outages) so worked from home then did about 6 miles around home. The snow is adding to the Christmas feeling!

Lunch- busy morning at work but got out just after lunch for a run. Discovered several signs saying the GE trail was closed due to hazardous conditions so I ran 2 laps on track (12 min) then went and did 25 min on bike

Lunch- I gave blood yesterday so assumed I'd feel bad today. We played on the second field as the first was very muddy. 14 people on a small field- we did 6v6, and the short field led to lots of scores. After a few minutes, we switched so that the scoring team retained possession and immediately went the other way, and all substitutions were hockey-style, on the fly. Then, we added that if you make a mistake (drop, bad throw, etc), people call "Shame" and you have to go off the field so the sub can come on. Fun game, non-stop, lots of scoring. My team was up 9-8 with 2 minutes to go before going on a streak and winning 14-8.

Due to expected rain tomorrow, we played frisbee today. First time ever on the GE softball field, which was real nice- decent grass, flat, no trees. Only 8 people showed up. My team lost first game 4-5 aided by some drops and bad throws. Shortened the really-long field some, then we won 5-2.

No run today. I've been feeling worn out recently- work stress, not enough sleep, sick kids, borderline sick for me. I got home from work last night and basically laid on a couch all evening, napping and evening. I did the same today on my bed much of the afternoon today- read, sleep, read, repeat. No run.

Beautiful weather for frisbee today. Field was very muddy with poor traction on large section. 18 people showed up- too many. 2 subs per team. Close game, my team lost 4-5. I played ok, though had a few throws I would like back.

No workout yesterday, feeling a touch under the weather

Frisbee today, we went to softball field again. 15 people, other team had a sub. Nice to have 14 players and not feel as crowded as normal field. 10 minutes in, I went for a diving catch and somehow came down with my chicken wing arm in front of me. My elbow impacted first, made a huge divet in the grass, and stopped all forward motion. In so doing, I heard multiple cracks and pops from my shoulder and neck area. I lay there for a few minutes trying to figure out the damage- did I dislocate my shoulder, strain ac joint, break clavicle. I started moving things and didn't feel any structural damage or injuries, though the muscles in my neck and shoulder were already very tight and sore. After a short break, I kept playing. I had some subpar throws but otherwise played fine. My team won 5-1, then we switched it up again. We were up 2-0 but then lost 3-2.

I can tell I'm going to be very sore tomorrow. Good thing this was the last game of the year. I may need a few days bedrest. I just hope nothing is injured.

No running today. My shoulder is not as sore as feared but my neck is rather sore all over- I basically have whiplash. Plus I'm a little under the weather and it's 40 deg and rainy all day. Perfect day to not run.

AM 4 miles easy from home. Temporarily stopped raining but still cool and windy. It's been a rainy fall/winter, and a rainy year. Greenville usually averages 48 inches of rain annually. We have about 75 inches this year. That's a lot of water. And 2/3 of that has been since July.

AM 50 deg and rainy all day today (flood warning, 2-4 inches of rain expected today, and it's not really supposed to stop till end of next week). I knew right away that my legs felt good today, and first mile was under 8:30 (normal first mile is 15-45 sec slower). I clocked mile 6 at 7:30, and then my last mile was right about 7 min. Felt really good, fastest run and fastest mile in months. Love days like today.
