"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka
"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

| | 12.2 miles / 8:32 avg. Commute home. Thin overcast, mid 40's temp. After 3 miles warm up I did 1 mile@HM pace/1 mile easy through mile 10 then 2.2 miles cool down. My pace on the HM miles was 8:01, 7:42, 7:50, 7:43. Legs are definitely not quite back from the long run nine days ago, so this was a good way to simulate how the legs might feel towards the end of a half marathon. I guess. Really I'm just scrambling around in the dark here. WT 39.5 miles

| | No run today. Everything but my legs feels totally recovered from the 50 miler. Actually I've got some tingling in my toes on my left foot, like my foot is trying to fall asleep or something. Weird. Maybe I should give my foot some mela"toe"nin to help it along. |

12 miles / 10:07 avg. From work. Mostly sun, persistent wind out of the south, mid 40's temp. I was determined to run very easy today. It felt so great to just kick back and tour the neighborhoods. Traffic was really light, because of spring break I guess. I can't get over how good this felt; very therapeutic, like a thank you note to my legs. WT 47 miles

| | Feeling light headed, slightly nauseous, and generally "flu-ish". This has been going on for a few days but is a little worse today, and not going away as the day progresses. Skipping the run and hoping to get out again tomorrow or Wednesday depending. |

Salt Lake Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:43:34 | |
Official time 1:43:34. A 49 second PR. I was 45/143 for my age division, and 460/4444 overall. Midpack man is alive and well.
Again, like last year, I quit around 10 miles. So from this I take it that the best I can do is 10 miles at around 7:45 average pace. Why no speed...it''s a mystery. Fortunately though, I love to run. Participating in races is just a nice way for me to change things up once in awhile. I love the high I get from running, and the personal challenge of getting out the door as much as possible and keeping consistent over time. I can think of worse hobbies. I ran a mile for warm up right before the start. For entertainment purposes I'll post my Garmin miles for this year with my Garmin miles from last year in parenthesis: mile 1: 7:55 (8:18) Good. mile 2: 8:03 (8:08) Okay. mile 3: 7:40 (7:45) mile 4: 7:45 (7:24) #*@%! mile 5: 7:56 (7:57) mile 6: 7:40 (7:55) Good. mile 7: 7:44 (7:49) Back to okay. mile 8: 7:49 (7:56) mile 9: 7:59 (7:49) Excrement. mile 10 8:20 (8:15) Piling up mile 11 8:23 (8:09) Really getting smelly now. mile 12 8:33 (8:34) Somebody must have opened a vent. Phew. mile 13 7:29 (7:37) Good. Somebody flushed. So there you have it. My splits speak for themselves. After the race I met for the first time, bloggers Walter and Steve Anderson. Both ran very good races (though they both had excuses for only getting 1:11's for this downhill course) Lol! Speed really is relative isn't it. After my half, I grabbed a bottle of water and ran slowly back up the course to find Lysa, who was pacing her brother Cam in his first half marathon. He did great, and it's always inspiring to see people triumph over extreme discomfort and conquer themselves! As we closed in on the finish, I heard, then saw, Kelli, as she was cheering for me. She looked a little confused like: "why is JD coming in around 2:30 for his half?" Lol! Her husband Scott ran the marathon today, I hope it went well for him. This, and the extended jog back to my car, netted me an additional 4.3 miles, giving me 18.4 miles for the day. Ogden Marathon in 5 weeks. WT 48.7 miles

10.3 miles / Easy. From work. Mostly cloudy, 45F - ish. All my runs since the S.L. Half have been a struggle. I've just felt flat and slow. Today there were a couple of moments of normalcy. So I'll just keep muddling through and hopefully be back to normal before Ogden. Also my right ankle has been sore since the half. There's no swelling evident so I haven't had anything to ice. I've been able to run on it, and have been cautious. It hasn't gotten any worse or better. WT 58.8 miles
