From Bec on Sun, Jan 09, 2011 at 11:34:37 from 71.199.12.198

RAD,

Yes, I have to take advantage of that pass soon and I need to pay you for it! I might be dropping by your house this week. I will let you know when I am coming.

Carina,

I am planning to do the National Marathon which is in March. I have to start training seriously. What are your spring marathon plans?

From Smooth on Sun, Jan 09, 2011 at 12:13:09 from 67.232.119.27

NICE workouts and runs this week, Bec! How's the road condition in Lehi?

You are running the National Marathon?!!! I want to run that one so badly! If I didn't have so many travel plans this year I would definitely have signed up. May be next year.

Have fun training and GOOD LUCK at Painter's. I am so excited for your triathlon and ironwoman! You'll do AWESOME!

Good things happen in St. George!  I don't know why but running comes to life for me when I am surrounded by the beautiful landscape of St. George.  Last year I was injured and unable to run this race.  So just being able to run this year made me extremely grateful.  I was not expecting much out of myself going into this race.  I was pleasantly surprised with my overall race experience on this honest course.

I ran my mile warm-up to pre examine all of my running equipment.  My new shoes were rubbing my foot raw and it started to bleed.  I ran back to my car and bandaged my foot.  I had no problem with that during the race and I was impressed with the shoes.  (Nike Elite)

The first few miles I really paced myself according to the way my body felt.  I passed hundreds of runners in the first few miles.  Slowly I found the 40 year oldish men that were moving at the same pace I was. I passed a few more ladies by mile 8 and I was happy that after that no other ladies ever passed me up again.

I didn't mind the course and the way it looped twice.  I was rather content with the fact that the second time around the loop I knew what to expect.  I felt my finish was strong and over all I was extremely pleased with the way I ran and held my pace.

I ran one more mile for 3 reasons.  1.  A dear friend was racing 2 miles and I wanted two focus two of my miles to him. 2.  One of my students was turning 15 so I told her I would run 15 miles for her on her Birthday.  3.  To thank God that I have an able body that can run and do amazing things.  :)

The end of Painter's was a party.  I got to hang out with RAD, Julie C, Smooth, and Melanie B a little.  My roommate was also there cheering me on which was really sweet.  So happy that I had a winter race to look forward to the last few months.  Now I will continue my training geared toward the National Marathon where I would like to PR.

and once you fall outside and think your safe running on the TM, you fall on the TM and then there is the track and that hamster-feeling comes in and .... basically must wait more patiently for DRY roads. My run yesterday was ditto yours. Too risky. It was so nice in ST. George wasn't it? I feel your pain Becca. Taking it easy is very wise. Of course the roads are clear today.

What an interesting day for a long run...

I got to RAD's house about 8:15 and we took the dog out for a mile warm-up.  Quarter mile in Rachel was pulling the dog along and the pup was out of breath.  I have never experienced running by a dog before,so it was all new to me.

The wind was a bit crazy so we took the 'Herrriman Hills' route.  It actually wasn't too bad as we climbed up the hills.  On the way down we were caught in a wind storm.  We stopped at Smith's for a drink.  Once I stopped I was really dizzy because of the crazy whipping wind.  She called her hubby and met us three miles south of the Smith's.

Happy I got 13 in today.  Thanks RAD.

What a running morning!  Rolled out of bed at 5:30 without too much sleep.  I was ready to run!  So many calories have piled high on my body the past week, it was fair time to hit the asphalt.

Met RAD at the cold and lonely JRP trail @ 6.  We ran the first 3 miles in darkness that seemed to go forever.  Once we hit the turn around spot, the sun started to rise and it was completely beautiful .  Hints of hot pink were in the sky and I suddenly became very blessed to be running in good health with a great friend.

By the time we finished our time on the trail, the 14 miles we did didn't seem so bad.  I had 2 more miles left to hit my goal distance, but I really didn't want to do those on my own.  I decided I would go with RAD to her 5K and donate some $ to a good cause.

The intention on the race was not to run fast.  The first mile was pretty darn slow.  By the time I realized I might have a chance at winning, I picked up the pace.  I wanted to run on RAD's side, but my pride got in the way.  I ended up taking 2nd to my surprise and was given a gift card and hug from the race director.  Cool race.  Great running.

What a race!   After enjoying a week of touring the Nation's capital, I topped off my week with a marathon!  I have put modest miles in for this race, and I consider the training I did rather solid.  I was rather pleased with my overall performance.

At 5:15 a car load of girls came to pick me up at my sister's home in Sterling, Virginia, about 50 minutes away from the District.  There were four girls in the car besides me, and they were all geared up to run the half.  I think that they were all more nervous than me to run the half.  Two of the girls were running their first race and they were asking all sorts of questions to the other girls in the car.  I was kind of laughing at the Q&A session.   It was rather entertaining.

We got to RFK Stadium and stood in a line of about 20 people waiting for one P.O.P  There was another one, but a young lady had been in there for about 30 minutes.  I was getting rather anxious to get to my coral, so I left the girls and ran to find the bag drop.  After about ten minutes, I finally found the armory where they were keeping all of our goods.

I ran to the coral and listened to the National Anthem.  Gun fired, and off we went.

I started way too fast.  I had been in front of the 3:10 pacer for some time before he caught up to me.  At that point, I knew I needed to slow down or else I would be paying for it big time.  I was at mile 4 by that time and I hung with him until about mile 6.   Hit my 10k at about 47 minutes.

Ran and tried to avoid all of the crazy half marathoners.  There were numerous times I was caught behind big groups of men.  Why do they travel in packs like that?  Just spread out, my heavens!  Hit hills between miles 6 and 8.

The split off from the half marathon wasn't too easy.  My body kind of wanted to stop with everyone, but I had to keep going.  1:38 was my half time.  Fair.  I knew it was time to now maintain my pace, be strong, and think positive thoughts.  Every time something negative would pop up into my mind I would say to myself, "Blah!"  Strange, but it seemed to work.

Miles 16-18 were kind of boring.  We went through a tunnel for more than a half mile.  My GPS signal was gone.  I could see that I was not the only getting annoyed by this.  Other runners were glancing at their watches and mumbling.

Now the race entered a beautiful part of D.C. Anacostia.  Hehehe, we were totally in the ghetto.  I was nervous when I noticed there were no more volunteers and there were police everywhere.  My sister told me before the race that she won't even drive there because it is unsafe.  Here we were running up and down the streets, made me a little nervous.  I didn't see many people out and about, I think they were all still sleeping.

At mile 22 I still felt rather fresh.  I really could not believe I only had four miles remaining.  My pace felt relaxed and easy. Mile 23 there was a band with little cheerleaders about the ages 8-10.  I heard one of their mothers across the street yell, "You shake that baby, you shake that for your Mama!"  I had to laugh.

Then came  mile 24, the hills of death. Three hills made mile 24 well, uphill.   My legs at this point were rather tired of turning and climbing up and down the hills of the city.  I was ready to be done.

I cruised the last two miles and finished at 3:25 something.  I was very pleased with my time.  Spring marathons can be rather challenging and I think this race geared me up for some summer marathons.

These blogs are really cool. Puts your right in your head for the race. Good job though! I am proud of you! I like the lady that told you to shake it. I would have laughed too. I was sad I couldn't be there to see it! You are awesome though! Running 40 miles per week with minimal speed work. I would say you are doing quite well.

Oh Becca how I love thee! Let me count the ways :)

You are SO amazing. Nice work on the race! I just ran some nice pace miles today and you still CREAMED my half time in your full! But, then again we all know you can kick my butt anytime - you are just nice enough to hang with me on the long slow miles :)

Now I think I will just need to see you shake it! Oh, and I'll need some details about this fun Q&A session!

David,

Thanks! I wish you could have been there to run this race with me. It's time to start buckling down for UVM.

RAD,

I have told you this before and I will tell it to again. One of my favorite parts of running is getting to be with certain individuals during long runs... That would be you my fellow friend. It has been one heck of a journey putting in miles with you this past winter. Thanks for doing it with me.

Smooth,

If you get the chance to do this race, take it! I think you would enjoy the Cherry Blossom festival that occurs at the same time.

Thanks Julie and Teena. Sure felt nice to get an early spring marathon in.

Walter,

This would be a great course for you to run on. It had so many turns and hills but it was fun. Fun, after it was over that is.

Bec--what a great race your ran. You did notice a lot in spite of 'looking at the ground (and garmin) a lot' (per you). Love the 'blah!' that is a great technique for blasting negative thoughts. I'm totally going to use it next time I try to run a decent race. Postive thoughts are so important. I'm also going to use "You shake that tahng fo yo Mama!" :)

That's the top 3% in your age group! I don't know if you realize how well you did. Just wanted to add that. You are awesome! Love you! Good job!

I used the Salt Lake City Half Marathon as a training run.  I did bandit the race and I did not feel bad about it.  This course goes through places I train everyday, so it was nice to know the terrain.  My goal for the race was to have a better time than last year.  Previous time was: 1:38 something.

I started off and my legs felt knotty, heavy, and sore.  I felt like my body was extremely tired.  Ran, ran, and ran some more.  My favorite part of the course was downtown Sugar House.  My least favorite part was going up State Street.  Pure DEATH march.  I had a lot of fun pacing off other runners during the race.

I finished within seconds of my last year's time.  This frustrated me a bit do to the fact I have been running much more than I was last year.  I had come off a recent injury last year, and this year I had no excuses.  It's time to make a plan to get out of my 3:20 marathon times and 1:30 half marathon times.  I have been on a plateau for about two years now.

You did really well Babe! You and I both know that we aren't going to have the best race every time. The fact that you went out feeling sore, knotty, and tired really factors into that. You went to bed quite late after a dance party where you went pretty crazy! I liked it ;) Anyways... Those things considered, I would say you did well. You can't base your current fitness level off this race. I bet if you had been training for it (to actually race and not just a training race) and had gotten proper rest etc, you would have dominated last year's time. There are sooo many factors in running it's just ridiculous. Don't be too hard on yourself.

That means that you can prepare for our half coming up! Get good rest and have proper training. I bet you'll do awesomely! I am excited to race it with you! Good race though! I am proud of you and I was extremely happy to see you at my meet! This is a really long comment.

David,

What is this and TM running? Look who went on the TM on a snowy Tuesday morning. Ha! It was you indeed.

Scott,

Yes, that it was TM running feels like. At least I get to watch the TV.

Lily,

I just LOVE the fact that you are a fast running lady and you turn to the TM as well. I would do a marathon on a TM if others were down with it as well.

RAD,

I only ran the TM miles because I know you wouldn't be so jealous of me.

Julie,

I know you love the TMs and their wicked ways. Gotta watch for that belt! Love ya!

Lily, I think you need to open a can on that guy! Holy Moly! I'd have told him off right then and there about how I can run like this - and better on the road. Or I would've just said your famous line: "my masacra runs faster than YOU!" and just continued on :) I was also just taunting Becca, because I know she prefers to run outside, but the TM is more convenient and she gets 'stuck' on it a lot (just like the rest of us!). So, please don't take my comment as a TM hater - I do hate the things, but it's a love/hate relationship! :)

15 miles before I got really sick at the marathon.  I pulled out of the UVM at mile 15 and had a volunteer take me down to the finish line.  Even though I was super sick and more frustrated, I still had one of the best marathon experiences ever!

I made it down to the finish line at about 2 hours and 45 minutes.  I got to see David finish his first marathon right behind the finish line.  I was so excited to see him finish.  He finished at 3:06 for his first marathon, seeesssshhh!  He did an awesome job.  He looked rather pale when he crossed the finish line and I got to catch him.  :)  I took him to the med tent and celebrated his special moment with him.  I was extremely proud of the boy!  BQ for a first time marathoner?  WOW.

As for me, taking a step back from running for a few weeks and feeling great about it!

When I got to RAD's house, she was putting her new shoes on.  I got a little jealous and now I want new shoes.

My sister had her pretty baby last night, she's cute.  No one on the blog knows her, so I don't really know why I am writing this.  Anyway, hope my sis recovers quickly.

I think you need some new shoes too! I LOVE me some new shoes - just not paying for them.

I hope your sister recovers too. Everyone has a different experience with it. For me, I would say a marathon...but it's just because having a baby afterward makes it all worth it. A medal is nice, but it's definitely no sweet little baby! I tell ya, those things make you forget all about any pain you had hours beforehand.

15 miles around Herriman with Rachel, Annette, and Kathy (she rode her bike and did a little running).  So fun to run with such great ladies.  My right Achilles Tendon was killing most of the run, still hurts.  GRRRR.  I have done nothing!

Tomorrow I will be riding in a bike relay just for ladies.  I am really excited and very nervous since I never train on my bike much.  Ok, I NEVER train on my bike.  It's only twenty miles of riding so I figure I will be OK.  Don't really want to get off and walk when it's uphill.  Now I am worried about my tendon.

How's the tendon? How did the bike relay go?

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.000.000.00

So today I experienced one of the coolest races!!!!  I did an all women bike race.  It was the Rockwell Relay and I did it with three new friends.  The relay went from Snowbasin to Provo.

In May a gal I worked with asked me if I wanted to do a bike race.  I have a hard time telling people no, so I decided to do it since I needed to get out on my bike and all.  Well, the race came and I hadn't trained one day on my bike in the past year.  I was nervous.

When my leg started I hopped on my bike and I was shaking.  I NEVER get nervous like that for running races but for some reason I was going to die.  My tendon was swollen and hurting for some reason and I was scared that I was going to injure the poor foot even more.  I rode on.

The start of my uphill leg which was 21 miles and the 1,067 feet of climbing was actually going ok.  I treated this like I was in a spin class and I was just warming up.  I rode from Morgan past East Canyon Lake up and into the next valley.  I ran this leg during the Ragnar last year so I knew what was coming.  I climbed, and climbed and climbed!  Out of nowhere the BIGGEST STEEPEST hill was in sight.  "Crap,"  I said to myself, " I really don't want to get off and walk that beast."  I put my hills forward and started digging.  I started singing the ABC's very slowly to get my mind off of the situation.  It hurt, I climbed, and I made it to the top after I went through the ABC's three times.  I went down a little hill and started another.  After the hills I sailed into town.  AMAZING!!!!

My second leg went from Midway down Provo Canyon.  I actually didn't like this leg as much because of the crazy traffic.  I was frightened and held my brakes most of the way down.

I rode around 45 miles.  Not much, but that was the furthest I've rode and it was super fun and not as hard as I thought it would be.  It took our team of four to complete the race in 11 hours and 30 minutes.  And my tendon actually felt better.

I know Allie! Thank you very much for your comments and encouragement. Someone has to tell me to back it off.

I think that runners have an extremely high pain tolerance. When we feel something creep up we think, "No big deal, that isn't pain, that's just my mind playing tricks on me. Or is it pain? I can't tell." Then a week later we can't walk.

From Kelli on Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 17:00:57 from 71.219.75.108

OH, you nailed runners on that one!!! We never seem to get it.

And I love the picture of your shoes in a heart. COOL.

From Bec on Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 17:23:03 from 71.199.9.12

HAHA!!! Thanks Kelli. I am talking about you especially on the pain thing, you are so darn tough.

TM class is exceptionally fun. It's easy to log 10 miles because you are doing it with other runners.

Everyone has their on TM, even the teacher. There is a set workout that the teacher has come up with; tempo, speed, or hills. It's an hour long and you can get there before or after the class to log more miles. Everyone can go at their own speed. I have seen teenagers, moms, grandmas and even a few men take this class. They are now coming up with a system where everyone will be able to plug their earphones into the cardio cinema and listen to the teacher and the music. It's really such a great thing! Extremely popular at my gym.

i'm sorry, bec. just give it a bit of time and when in doubt, be overly cautious. something that has really, really helped me is heel/toe walking. walk on your heels until your shins can't take it anymore, then walk on your toes until your calves have had enough. repeat. it really helps loosen up the lower legs. i do it almost every day now and it helps a ton.

good job with the cross training. that's tough stuff you did today!

I am happy to see that skinny Danny is still spinning away. Real first Triathlon, I loved it!

Swim:  9:50

Bike: 57 min

Run: 24 min

During the swim I had to really stop and take control of myself.  There were others all around and I was getting lost in the water.

Bike was super slow.  Depressing.

Run was fair on a bad Achilles.

I would like to do another triathlon shortly.  I would also like a new bike so I can actually get serious about this sport.  In the long run it will be kinder to my body.

Met Rachel, Annette and Toby at the JRP not too early.  Great miles.  I was trying to push the pace a little without Rachel knowing.  It was a little cold so the frigid air pushed our pace a little in the beginning.

Dropped Toby and Annette off after 12. Rachel and I kept going for a few more miles.

I honestly did not think my legs would be so heavy when we headed north on the trail... They did!

Rachel and I kept a great conversation and the miles flew by.  We ended with 18... I was happy with that.

I highly enjoyed one of my last runs with the BBKs.  I appreciate running the more I run with them for some reason.  Instead of talking myself out of getting up, I just get up!  I think it's because I know Rachel will be there and I get to hang out with her for a few hours.  I have become her personal running stalker.  No joke!  I find so much joy when I run with her.

We started late for the warm up.  Ran a mile or so up Butterfield Canyon and came back down.

Main workout:  3 miles up the canyon, 3 miles down.  I felt amazing THE ENTIRE time.  :)  It was fun to run with Rachel and protect her from the beast creatures.  I was a little scared myself as we ran up in the dark.

Cool down: Up and down the canyon again.  I don't have a watch so I have no idea paces, just go off of Rachel.

We ended with 11.8!  Watched a tarantula crawl under Rachel's car.  It gave me the chills.  Those spiders are huge!  I imagined sleeping under the stars and having one of those crawl on me during the night.  *Nightmares*

You just like running with me because you can run slow and still get a good laugh in :) I'm going to miss you when you go. Who will protect me from the mtn lions?!?

I need to email the picture to myself and post it. Good times :)

Julie, Butterfield Canyon is just South of Kennecott and goes over into Tooele. Probably about 12600South and 8400West in Salt Lake Valley. If you ever want to run it, let me know! I live just 3 short miles from the gate and I'd love to host you. Also, in the fall to spring they close the road to traffic so we get it all to ourselves - and the bikers. You can go 3.5 miles up before it gets really nasty and I've only ever made it up 4 before turning. I think you can go a total of 6 up to the top though. Someday when I'm cool I'm going to run all the way to Tooele!

I guess I better update my blog... It has been a long time.

Three weeks ago I was married to David Sondrup in the SLC LDS Temple.  We were married on Monday, September 12th.  It was an absolutely beautiful day.  We were the only ones that were married in the Temple that day.  It was nice to take all the time in the world... Just a perfect day.

The following Friday we celebrated our wedding with family and friends at the Salt Lake Hardware Building.  Just a beautiful and an amazing day!  The following day we opened our gifts and started our move down to Del Rio, Texas.

As for running, I put in on the back-burner for about three weeks.  I knew it was taper time, I just REALLY tapered.  I was not going to stress out about my upcoming marathon but rather try to enjoy my time with my new husband.  I spent a lot of time on the TM.  I actually have not ran outside since we have been in Texas.

Anyway.... Now to the St. George Marathon....

I had no expectations of myself going into this marathon.  I felt like I could push myself bellow a 3:20 if my body would allow.  I knew that whatever happened, I would end up with a fine time.  I was at St. George, my favorite race.... What could possibly go wrong?

I got to the bus with the gang (RAD, Toby, Smooth, Karen, Walter, Danielle, Teena, and Fonz).  I could really feel the marathon energy that was flowing between everyone.  I sat by Toby on the way up to the start line.  It was really fun talking to a first time marathon runner.  It really made me think back to my first marathon, which was also at St. George.  I was excited for her.

This year I went to the elite section of the start line.  Lines were long for the POPs.  Didn't feel so special.

Gun went off and we headed toward the line.  I figured I would start with the 3:25 pace group and work down from there.  We were off!

I stayed with the group for a little bit and then pulled ahead to the 3:15 pace group, even staying ahead of them a little.  I felt great!  6 miles past and I hit my 10k at 45 minutes.  I still felt there was not too much effort involved, I just kept tuggin away.

Veyo came.  Still felt fine.  My heart rate actually climbed a little, no prob.

I slowed 8-12 miles because I knew they were going a little uphill.  I was hanging around the 3:15 pace group at this point.

Mile 13: Not a good feeling....  I could feel the muscle fibers in my quads, they were already torn.   "Oh dear Rebecca, we have a problem."  I thought to myself.  "We are half way and the best part of the race is still coming. Poop."  I decided that I would just run at a good clip as much as I could before my legs were completely gone.

Mile 16:  Gone.  Quads, all gone.  What to do now?  Just cruise I guess.  By mile 18 the 3:25 pace group caught me.  Dang it!!!  I was not going to PR this day.  I felt fine waist up.  Sweating now because I didn't know if my legs would make it or not...  I just had to cruise.

Mile 20:  I just wanted to cry.  This is the part of the race I can usually blast past everyone.  Not this day.  I watched as some people were passing me, I was jealous.  There was nothing left in my legs.  I watched my 7:15 pace slow to a 8 minute pace, 8:15 mp, 8:45.... By the end it was a slow 10 mp.

Mile 22:  No more stopping at aid stations.  I couldn't get my legs to start up again.  Stopping was out of the question.

Last 10 miles were really a shuffle.  I was actually laughing at myself, I could not believe this was possible.  My heart rate was slow and I just wanted to finish.

I saw my mom at 26.1, gave her a wave and a big smile.  I was about done.

I was not happy with my performance.  I felt I ran the race WRONG and trained WRONG.  Looking back at the past few months, I actually felt fine with how I did.  I wish David would have been there to see me finish in person, oh well.  He watched me finish on the live coverage of the race, pretty cool.  I am thankful to be running.  :)

It's Monday and I can barely walk.  There is a marathon in Texas in two weeks that I really want to do.  Hopefully I can walk by then. :)

So tomorrow I am doing the Marathon 2 Marathon in Marathon, Texas.  After David's classes today we are driving to Fort Stockton, spending the night and driving down the highway to register for the marathon at the start line in the morning.  Online registration has already closed and we can't make it to the pasta dinner, so they are letting us register at the start line.  Pretty laid back race I would say.

I am kind of excited to run this race for a few reasons.  1.  I get to run in the environment where I now live.  2.  Meet the crazies that will come to a place out in the middle of nowhere to run.  3.  Just run for fun.  4.  David is running the 5k, so he will get to see me finish.  :)

I will have to blog about my experience, should be a good one.

Race: Marathon 2 Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:10:00
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Marathon 2 Marathon!!!

This was an exciting marathon for me for some reason.   The race was at 4,000 feet, which for Texas is pretty high up.  The race itslef was really out in the middle of NOWHERE.

David and I drove three hours north of Del Rio to Fort Stockton to spend the night, since Marathon was sold out of rooms.  Woke up at 6:20, ate breakfast, and headed to the start line to register.

26 miles out of Marathon was the start line with about 70 people waiting in line for 2 porta potties.  I registered for the marathon and David registered for the 5k.  I was not going to wait in line for the bathroom, so I had David drive me 2 miles up the road.  Went on the side of the road and then drove back to the start.  Blow horn went off and off the runners went. I did not like the fact that this race started at 8.  Way too late.

First three miles were up hill.  David drove next to me making sure I was maintaining an 8 mm.  I was a little under and felt fine.  Down hill miles came until about mile seven and I maintained my pace.  I was in second place.  David drove away to go and run the 5k at that point.

My miles started slowing with the endless miles running on a straight road appearing to go out into the middle of death land.  It was getting hot, my legs were tired, and I wanted to be done.  I hit my half at 1:44, which was reasonable.

Slower, every mile was slower.  If I could get to 20, see David, I will be on my way.... Just have to get to David.  David came at mile 16 and my wheels fell of big time.  I just stopped and walked with him and could NOT get running again.  I have him push my back side into a run and now we were running at a 13 mm.   HA!  Might as well just walk.  I told David to get lost and meet me at the next station, I had lost everything.  Lady runners started passing me, I really didn't care.

Got to eighteen, then twenty, cried at 22 when I saw a HUGE hill I had to go up.  Thankfully, I met a lady that talked me up the hill to the next mile.  She brought my pace down to an 8:30 mm and I really coudln't handle it.

24, came.... I was moving my body along.  All I thought about was David pushing me to the finish.  Saw David at mile 26 and about died, I was ready to finish.  Finished the race and I was done.  :)

Legs didn't hurt like St. George, they were fatigued and just plain heavy.  We sat in some large rocking chairs in the shade for a few minutes.  I knew I hadn't pushed it hard when I told David I was ready to eat lunch.  We walked over to an art studio where they had a large spread of yummy food from the local restaurants.  I had vegetarian enchiladas, rice, bean salad, cocunut juice, and a cookie.  :)  We went outside on the sidewalk to eat as we cheered other runners into the finish.

Amazing race atmosphere.  I have a feeling I will be going back to this race on fresh legs next year.  By the time I had finished it was 88 degrees.  It grew warmer in the next two hours as people were still running.  The start was really late.  No shade, no cloud coverage.

Wow, you didn't make it sound that bad when I was chatting with you :( However, I know how you feel...just a couple weeks ago my body was doing the same thing. I just didn't have the excuse that I'd run a full 2 weeks prior!

I'm SO glad David was there and that he was able to inspire you and literally push you to the end! I'm jealous of the post race spread - YUMO! I've always wanted to try coconut juice after a race, I've heard it is a great recovery!

Congrats for pushing through the hard times, sometimes all we can say is: "I finished" and that is good enough!

Thanks for the comments. It was one of the most difficult marathons I have ran. Combination of the course and the heat. Maybe it was just my tired legs? I don't really know. I need to find a race down here that I will be excited to train for.

Smooth,

You would have really enjoyed this marathon, I just know you. There were so many die-hard runners that were running out there. For a long time I ran with a man in "Nephi shoes," that is what David was calling them anyway. I met a Marathon Maniac, a man that was running his 53rd marathon, and a bunch of runners from Forth Worth, Texas. They didn't seem to mind the 90 degree heat. It was a very relaxed marathon environment. No GU, you had to bring your own if you wanted it. Also, Border Patrol was driving along the course handing out bottled water. I think they were excited to do something that day.

I won a race?  Ha!  That tells you that not too many fast running ladies live around Laughlin Air Force Base.

David and I showed up to the race an hour before the start and picked up our numbers.  One of the perks about the military is that the base races are free.  We are signed up to do a five mile run in November and a half marathon in December.  Each race has a few prizes as well.  Not a bad deal at all.... I really wish there were more people that would get involved on base.  Physical fitness is such a big deal but yet no one really gets out to the races.

David and I warmed up 1 mile on the un-graded track.  We noticed a cross country team of boys warming up as well.  I told David he actually had some competition, he got excited.  We watched the kids races that were taking place before our race, kids are cute.  :)

Our race started.  I just love 5ks, NOT.  They tend to push me out of my comfort zone of running, especially a week after a marathon.  I never train for 5ks, they are just fast.  I got going and realized it was only 3.1 miles, I could handle this.

Finished as the first lady, which has never happened for me... Not at a super fast time either.  The 5k got me excited to run shorter, faster distances.  I'm excited for our next few races.

As for David... He took second by one second.  None of the cross boys won, another Lt. that ran track for the academy won.  They were both really happy with their races.  Go boys!

Jody,

I thought Del Rio wasn't that bad until I go to the gym or run outside. I keep thinking a storm or something is coming. It has been nice to my skin as well, that is plus. It is still really nice out, don't miss the cold days Utah will be having soon.

Any advice on some marathons? I won't be able to do Austin. Is there anything out there you are aware of that falls on a Saturday? There are a few marathons I have seen but I am not that excited about them. I need something on my agenda in Feb. or March. Any suggestions?

RAD,

Strange, strange addiction I have with that machine. Today I was running and I stopped because I wanted to do the stairs! Something is wrong here. I might as well sign up for the Great Wall of China Marathon. That is obviously what my crazy body wants to do lately. It's actually been going on for a few months now.

Since last week the left foot hurts when I toe off in my running stride. I think the stairs haven't been helping, so I cut them out too. Cold morning for running, 40 degrees out!  Brrrr.

Ran 10 with the 1/2 marathon training group on base.  AP:  Very slow.

About mile 3 I tripped and ripped my left knee open.  I knew there was a deep gash on my leg but I didn't want to stop, make a fuss in front of the other ladies, so I got up and kept running.  When I saw my leg in the light it was a fright!  Blood had gushed down my leg and dried in a crazy manner.  I just told everyone I had dressed up for Halloween a little too late.  Looked a lot worse than it felt.

Running on base in circles isn't that bad, YET.  We did two four mile loops, plus two miles (optional).  It was very nice getting outside and running with some friends!

I wasn't going to run this 5k but I am glad that I did...

I am pretty sure that here in Del Rio they put one race on a year; Running of the Bulls.  The race was held in one of the more "pretty" areas of Del Rio.  Temp was perfect for a race, about 58 degrees.

Warmed up with David for a mile running up the course.  Lined up under the Red Bull balloon arch and observed those that lined up at the front.  David had a little group of fast runners from the base he was surrounded by and there weren't any "fast" looking ladies.  There was a woman in her 70s that was repeating, "Let's go!" over and over.  She was wearing a pink sweatsuit that I thought was just darling.  She was up at the start line near David, it made me laugh.

Off we went.  Course was not marked and I did not run with a Garmin, so I did not know my mile splits.  They had to drink stations so I think those were the mile marks.  Hit each about 7 minutes.  I kept pace with a guy in a blue shirt for about a mile.  He was really getting on my nerves, so I slowed down a bit so I wouldn't have to run with him.

Finished as the first lady by a minute.  Near the finish I saw David and I was proud to be the first lady when I saw him.  After the finish I felt really good.  I was happy when David told me that we did we swept the titles.  I was so excited that we both won!  His time was 16:53, seesh!

We cooled down two more miles on the course and cheered other runners in.  When they announced both of us as the winners they took our pictures with the city Mayor and the Wing commander of the base.  Proud couple.  Sadly, we didn't win any of the prizes from the hefty raffle they had at the end.  :(

Anyone have any suggestions for my plantar wart?????  It's really messing with me these days.  I went to the Dr. and he told me to go home and try home remedies before I see him again.  I have done the remedy for two days now (salt and egg yolk), and it's absolutely killing me!  It's to the point I can't walk.  I am going to try soaking a cotton ball in Apple Cider Vinegar every night and placing the cotton ball on the wart covered by a bandaid.  If anyone has any advice, please give it to me!!!!!  I am thinking there will be intense pain for a few days while I kill the wart?

Running is just out of the question today.  :(

Iced my foot and it felt a lot better!  Went to the gym and ran 4 on the TM, arm weights, 4 more on the TM.  I was rather excited to run.

Mexican Mountain Goat TM Workout.

RAD is 2100 miles away from me and she still inspires me to do hard workouts.  I am always up for a hard task on the TM.  So I decided to be brave and do hill work on the TM.

Warm up: 10 min @ 8:34

Workout: Two minutes at inclince 2%-6%, one minute rest between each set.  One minute at inclines 7%-9% with a minute rest between each.

Reverse the enitre workout starting with 9% climbing down to 2%.

Ten minute cool down.  Hit 7 miles right at 1 hour.

I highly enjoyed this workout and I climbed a little over 800 feet.  I think it would be to my best interest if I did this workout once a week.  There aren't any hills around where I live, the TM does a great job helping hit some incline.  AP for the workout was 8:34.

Core for about 30 minutes.  I am super sore from my leg workout yesterday.

10 miles with the group at a really slow pace.  We went all over the base and it wasn't too bad.   Some of the girls in the group are really improving over a short amount of time, fun to see!  Three of them ran the Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon last weekend.  I made one of the girls run the whole ten miles with me, proud of her.  I really got to talk to her while I ran and it was rather nice to vent about random things.  I mostly talk about running, hopefully I don't bore everyone with running stories.

I WON A TURKEY!!!!!!  One of my life-long running goals has been to win a turkey and today I did it!

Super humid this morning.  We went out to David's car and it was covered in a mist.  David later explained to me why humidity is bad for running.  With more moisture in the air, there is less oxygen.  DUH.  I have never actually thought about it until he explained it to me today on our cool-down.

We got to the start a little early to warm-up.  We saw a runner we have nicknamed "Oliver" getting ready to warm-up as well.  Oliver is only 15, but he is quick.  David had some competition...  Looked around and they had brought two girls from the X-country team as well, so I thought I might have some ladies running by me.

There were about fifty runners at the race, not too bad.  We all lined up and the RD called out, "GO!"  Off we went.  There was a little runner in blue shorts that was fast!  I watched David as he held out in the beginning so he wouldn't burn out.  There were a lot of runners going just way to fast including the cross girls.

Passed the girls by the first mile and held my pace.  We ran all around the base and by mile three I gave myself a big walk.  I let my heart rate fall all the way down and then I started running again.

Finished the race as the first lady surrounded by some really strong and fast men.  Saw David and he took second to the boy in the blue shorts.  We both congradulated him for being so fast and strong.

Winners of the age divisions won a turkey, and a few turkeys were raffled off.  GREAT prizes!  Everyone also got a box of stuffing.

Cool race.  Now I must think 1/2 marathon!  (3 weeks)

Plan was to run 10 with David today, that didn't quite work.  Ran two miles and  felt completely lead legged from my workout the evening before.  We got to the rocky trail that circled the base and ran on it for about a mile.  The trail irritated my wart foot and I was being a complete baby.  I stopped running and told him he could go without me.

We both walked a mile and a half home.  So much for a calorie burning run before our feast.

It was warm enough that we both ran in shorts and short sleeve shirts.  Can't say I have ran in such warm conditions on Thanksgiving.

I was supposed to run with the running group this morning, so I woke up at 6:30 to get ready.   The leader of the group texted me and said she was still to full from Thanksgiving dinner the night before to run.  Jumped back into bed and told David I wanted him to run 10 miles with me.  Woke up 2 1/2 hours later and we both got ready to run.

We headed outside of the base onto a long stretch of highway going 1.5 miles west of the base.  We found a new highway that has opened up and ran back to base on that, loved it, no cars.  The wind was awful going east or south.  The rest of the run stunk, I felt gross and the wind was making me a grump.  David just kept running with me in good spirits, bless his heart.

We made a pit stop and went to his flight room on the base.  It was cool to see where he goes to learn how to fly everyday.  The room reeked of sweaty men and greasy popcorn, yummy.  I don't know how the students stay in a bright green painted room without any windows all day?

Back on the road we continued to jaunt into heavy winds.  I ran behind David so he would block the wind.  I was so happy when we finally hit 10 miles.  I was dizzy from the wind gusts when we got back home.

Rad,

I can not WAIT to leave here!!! For some reason this week is really hard. David works 12 hour days and I have hard time cleaning the house all day. 'New life?' It's kind of boring.

Carina,

Thanks for the encouragement. Some days it's great, some days it's so-so. :P

Oh Bec ~ So sorry you are having a hard time over there missing your friends and work and all that was familiar and comfy! Being married is a huge adjustment in and of itself, then add moving away and not having a job to occupy the time is extra tough! Hang in there! Know that we think of you and can't wait to see you during the holidays!

Thank you, I am hanging on just to get to Utah. I REALLY want to change my ticket and leave later. Some days there seems to be no reason I should even be here. :P

My foot is healing!!! The crazy remedy worked. After two weeks of pain, it started drying up. Who knows if it will come back, but the salt and egg worked! This is a happy thing. :)

I agree, I just need to see the fam and get refreshed. I REALLY want to run the marathon Smooth was talking about in Texas. That will keep me focused for a little bit. Would LOVE to also run 32 on your 32 B-day! That's so cool Rachel.

11 miles with the running group.

1 mile run back home.

Why can't I get my legs to want to go further?  It must be a mental thing because I could not force myself to go another mile.

It's fun running to revelry at 0700.  The speakers blow that trumpet song so loud, I am fond of running to it.  :)

I am also proud of the girls that I have been running with.  They literally have started with 1 mile and have worked up to 11.  The base is putting on a half marathon next week that most of them are doing.  Just cool.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

David and I ran the half-marathon on base today.  In Del Rio it hardly rains, the wind always blows, and it's usually a little humid.  Starting temp was around 40, the wind blew fiercely and it was very wet.

Course went all over the base.  I was surprised that we didn't have to loop anything twice, since the base isn't too big.   We ran on the runway and around the flight line, which is something I can't ever say I have done, nor will do again.  The mist was so thick I couldn't see the end of the runway and I followed the other runners in front of me trying not to get lost.  Wind was extremely intense.

At the mile 9 aid station they had snickers and starbursts.  I laughed when I saw the candy and the volunteer giving them out had a pretty big laugh too.  Just thinking about eating a Snicker's bar during a race is kind of gross.  I think I would get super thirsty.

I can't say that I had a time that I am very proud of.  I don't really know what my focus is as far as speed and training.  I'm a little frustrated with my goals and how I can accomplish them. Wasn't happy about my race, I really wanted to land a 1:38.  I guess I didn't do too bad considering my husband was only ten minutes faster than me... Then again, he hasn't trained at all.  Oh well.

We stood around after the race for about an hour to wait for the awards.  It was extremely cold and wet.   I did take the overall lady but the race does not recognize overall winner, just age divisions.  It's fun to do the free races the recreation department puts on, gets a few people involved.

CONGRATS!! I know you aren't super pleased with the time, but you took 1st overall - kicked some booty and showed those people who you are! :) David is just crazy fast, we know girls can go longer :) Besides running for us isn't all speed, it's about socializing and stress relief - and a few prizes and kickin' some booty!

Let the disappointments go. You are awesome and the wind was CRAZY and it was raining. You ARE an exceptional runner. Allow yourself that pat on the back for your awesomeness coming through. If you don't I'll kick your butt in 3 days :)
