It's actually nice out and we have a track. Problem with the track is that they didn't even it out before they built it. One way you go extremely down hill and the other, an up hill you can feel. I'm truly just a pansy.

Finally got ten in. Broken up miles, but I got them in.

AM:  Went to the TM to do MMGW, got 4 miles in and almost exploded from the heat of the gym.

PM: Went back to the gym and did the second half of MMGW.  I discovered the mother's room.  Two TM's and a large fan.  Turned the fan on and felt much cooler than the first run of the day.  Mom's room also has a wide selection of toys...If I get bored on the TM, you just might guess where I may be...

Another set of broken up miles.  I went with two girls that live on my street for five miles on the base.  They complained the whole time, kept commenting on how fast I was going (9 mm), and told me they hated looking at the back of me the the whole time because I was dragging them.  SERIOUSLY?  Where are the die hards that don't sit and complain?  We were hardly moving.  Anyway, people here are just not the same as back home.  I need a RAD clone!

7 miles on the TM at the gym later.  Did a little speed work, not enough to call it speed work.

How is it back home it is easy to get 50 miles in per week?  Here, I barely pull 40 and it's like pulling teeth.

:( sorry Becca. Bad company is sometimes worse than none. Just explain to them the Rools of running (read BS Rools - Brent's blog on the side) tell them that is why you were running so fast :) I think it is just a different purpose for them. Here, we have a great group of runners that likes to run somewhat competitvely. Not with each other, but with ourselves. We are constantly wanting to improve and push ourselves. Sounds like those ladies are a little more conservative and just want to relax and run for fun. You need to find those competitve people!

I would love a RAD clone up in Davis County, too!! Too bad we don't all live closer together, I would really love some company, too. Way to get the miles in anyway. Keep it up! :) I think I may have asked you this at the lunch, but remind me, what are your racing plans?

Random miles for the day.

Went running in the AM with Amy and her dog Abby.  The conversation was good and we went 5 miles.  Easy run, COLD.  I actually had to break out my running tights!

4 miles on the TM.  Wanted to do some speed but again, I got sick.  An older man that works at the gym got mad at me because I was working out in the mother's room and I didn't have any kids with me.  Hmmmm, I argued with him a little since I was the only one in the room and it's the only TM with a fan to keep me cool.  Whatever, I just stayed in there.

Leg lifting stuff for about a half an hour.

2 more slow miles on the TM.

From Bec on Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 15:27:39 from 68.206.133.141

You are not slow. We would hold some strong, nice paces while we ran a long distances together.

We're talking 10 mm with 10 minutes breaks at miles 2 and 4. They are actually getting better. Today every quarter mile I would hit some really fast paces, run back to them and bring the heart rate down and do it again. Then they just started walking, so then I had to stop and slow.

Hey Bec! Thanks for your nice comments today on my blog-o.

So I am having foot issues as well. Everyday I run, then I come home and about an hour later I am limping around. Mostly my right foot, but I did have an issue with my left one as well for a week. It's so weird. But it scares me. I don't want it to turn into a fracture.

How is married life?

From Russ on Tue, Jan 24, 2012 at 11:46:06 from 74.114.3.253

When I had something going on with my foot a couple years ago a long time runner told me to soak it in a 5 gallon bucket ice bath. I did it every day for a couple weeks and it hurts really bad for a couple minutes (like worst-pain-in-your-life hurt) but after that the foot goes numb. Soak for 10-15 minutes at a time (no more) and if it's a muscle/tendon/ligament problem the foot ice bath should help. Crazy, yes, but effective. I keep telling people to do it and haven't had too many takers as it really does hurt like crazy, but it works.

Thanks for the comments everybody!

Scott, Thanks for the comment. I had to have some kind of fun during all of that wedding stuff, hence the picture.

Lily, It sounds like your foot problems are more intense than mine. If I feel ANYTHING going on I freak out. I have had a lot of SF's sooo...I don't want to chance anything. Please take care of your little feet!

Russ, Thanks for the recommendation of giving your foot a miniature ice bath. I had a bad case of plantars, and I would do that and switch it off with the hottest water I could stand, it went away! Ice always seems to cure. It's taking the time to ice and sit uncomfortable for an amount of time.

I drove 7.5 hours with my two friends to the Texas Half Marathon in Dallas.  The drive was LONG.  I swore that I would never drive that far to race anything less than a marathon, but where I live I have to drive a very long way to get to any city.

Dallas was COLD!!!  It was 34 with a wind chill.  I had planned to wear my tank top and skirt.  Ended up wearing a garbage bag for the first three miles and I never took my long sleeve shirt off.

My friends were very antsy at the start of the race, I could tell they were rather nervous.  I just tried to relax and not really think about anything major, just thought about running 13.1...  I took a mile warm-up to shake out the nerves.

Race started and I was pretty far back.  I crossed the start a minute and a half after the gun went off.  The first mile was all about weaving outside of the main traffic jam.  I ran upside the hill onto the grass and passed the masses.

Mile 1: 7:28 Pulled over and tied my shoe that had the chip on it.  Really?

Mile 2: 7:07

Mile 3: 7:28 Extremely windy at this point.  Found a tall man and ran behind him for about a half mile... I have been doing this when I run with David, so I am used to drafting off someone else.  :)  This kind of annoyed the guy, I just wasn't ready to chick him yet.

Mile 4:  7:44  A relatively large hill for someone that trains on flat surfaces... Nothing like Utah hills... It was just a challenge for me to climb that thing in the crazy wind.

Mile 5: 7:30  Starting to finally get into some kind of groove.

Mile 6: 7:29

Mile 7: 7:53  Stopped and gooed, guess that is why I am slow?  Starting to see a lady in blue to catch.

Mile 8: 7:29  Caught the lady.  Now I have some kind of competition to keep up with.

Mile 9: 7:36 Out of the wind, goo kicking in.  My timing chip comes off!!!  Grrr.  I have to stop and fix it on a shaky bridge.

Mile 10: 7:25  Feel good.  Shoe comes untied again!!!!!  I double knot the dang thing, girl in blue passes me plus another slow looking chick.  Time to get angry.

Mile 11: 7:10 Catch those girls and keep them behind me.

Mile 12: 7:43 Back into the wind we go heading uphill.

Mile 13: 7:04

Last .1 was up a big hill.  NO sprint up this thing.

Felt great when I finished and I ran back to my friends.  Caught them at mile 12, ran with one of them for her last mile.  She took 11 minutes off her last race time.  We all had a great race.

The awards ceremony quickly started after we arrived at the finish, and so we didn't have to wait around forever.  Food at the finish was also delicious.

This race motivated me to want to train harder for upcoming races in the Texas area.  The scenery of the race was very beautiful as well.  We did all 13.1 around a nice clean lake.  I would recommend this race and if I am here next year I might do it again.

wow! excellent race Becca! I am so proud of your awesome skills - especially when you get angry and drafting off tall people :) too bad I can't take credit for that one, because you are always in front of me.

So, did you get any bling to bring home as a big winner, winner?? How far ahead was #3 - did you even see her? I hate when I can't see them because I start too far back on the line!

From Bec on Mon, Jan 30, 2012 at 19:51:55 from 68.206.133.141

Thanks for your comment Rachel. I could see #3 right when we did a turn around at mile 12. She was less than a minute in front of me. I tried so hard to catch her (lady in pink). BUT the race results were according to gun time and I started a minute and a half after the gun sooooo, I might have been third place after all. The winning lady was 1:30, the man was 1:16. The women in Texas aren't as competitive as the women in Utah. I think that is because of the Mormon culture, just sayin'.

From Dasha on Mon, Jan 30, 2012 at 20:44:34 from 24.206.78.53

That is an awesome time if you had to stop and tie your shoe twice, and goo and put your timing chip on!

I only stopped for water once, ran straight through otherwise.

I am planning to do 2 other TX halves - but not to race as hard. Austin Half on Feb 19th and Moe's Better Half on March 4th. Not sure how far you are from the Austin area. But I am like you, I don't want to drive far for a half!

Very AWESOME race! Glad to see you back in racing mode! Sounds like a well organized race!!!

Exciting day at the Lasano fitness center.

First off, I went to the running clinic at the HAWC (Health and Wellness Center).  They offer a lot of great things like running analysis, body fat testing, a sports nutritionist (free), and much more.  I need to be taking advantage of all the FREE help they offer to the military.  I better hurry before they cut that stuff out of the budget like they do so many other services.

Today we discussed the importance of the mid-strike of the foot while running.  We practiced what it feels like to propel your body forward and to run on the balls of your feet while cutting out the heel strike.  As I did this, I felt myself glide across the gym floor.  Running was A LOT more efficient practicing this.  We watched this.

Went to TM class and I focused on the technique we had just learned about.

5 min warmup.

30 second sprint, 90 second recovery repeat 5X

Run at base and add 1% incline every minute for five minutes

Sprint on an incline for 30 seconds, recover 90 seconds, repeat 5X

Recover 5 minutes.

I did some lifting, 100 sit ups.

Went back to the TM for another 4 miles.  Started at 7.5 and went up on the TM every quarter mile until I was at 8.  Started the series again.  Cool down for 1 mile.

I decided that I was going to long run today... Didn't know how long, just knew it had to be long because I didn't run yesterday.

Before I left this morning I decided to download a few podcasts because I tend to enjoy long runs when people are talking.  I downloaded a podcast about training for your first marathon, which was okay.  If anyone has any suggestions on a GOOD, HIGH LEVEL (not for beginner runners) running podacst, please let me know about it!

Did my first 6 mile loop like a gem.  8:32 AP

Came home took a drink and headed out for a 5 mile loop before my visiting teachers came by at 10:15.  Got back at 10:15 on the dot and I guess they already came and went???  Sent me a text wondering where I was.  8:15 AP

Back out for another 6.   8:25 AP

Extremely muggy and rather warm today, planes weren't really flying.  I looked at my e-mail this morning and they had canceled the running group due to the weather.  Really???  I thought it was rather fine.  Didn't know running gets canceled EVER due to weather.  Plus they were only doing up to 6 miles this morning.  Glad I didn't get out of bed to make a showing there.  :)

Cancelling running group for weather? Wow, I've run in some snowstorms with the BBK's that I was afraid of DRIVING to! Crazy people, they don't know bad weather :)

Nice job on the long run - not quite as long or as fun as you last long run, but pretty close with those podcasts :) Sorry you missed your VT, they must not run on Mormon Standard Time - or even wait 30 seconds!

You got me thinking about running podcasts so I did some searching (Googled "good running podcasts").

http://www.runningtimes.com/Channel.aspx?CategoryID=485 looks to have really good ones. They might be short, but if you did Play All it would just cycle through them.

Another one is at http://www.runningpodcasts.org/ - no idea if it's good or not.

From Bec on Sat, Feb 04, 2012 at 19:01:00 from 68.206.133.141

Toby, They are the podcasts from itunes. Just go under podcasts-fitness-and then they should be in the top twenty or so. I liked some of the stories I listened to.

Rachel, You are right, not as fun as with you! I miss our running talks. I had to listen to something to move the time along.

Russ, Thank you so much for the podcasts! I am so excited to go and have listen. They really seem to help on lonely long runs.

Dasha, I still don't know why they cancelled... I guess it was because it was raining a little. I am from Utah and I have ran in MUCH worse conditions. I am also a mild weather person, if it's bad, I go indoors.

She encouraged me to run the TM on a 6% incline as she has done the past few weeks.  I gave it a go... No or little pain.  I ran 6 miles on the TM a little faster than a 10 mm.  I really think there is something strange going on in the hip area.  It's on the outside of the right quad.

Ian Adamson (7x World Champion of Adventure Racing, Bad Water Masters division winner, 200 x triathlon pro athlete) came to little old Laughlin Airforce Base to give a FREE running clinic this past week.  I had the opportunity to listen to him lecture about everything running for two days.  His main focus was to teach about Natural Running and Newton shoes.  I think I am baptized to the forefoot shoes that he had us train in and buy if we wanted to.

Such an amazing experience to run with a world class athlete and have him analyze my gait.  I am thinking about becoming a Newton coach as well.

That was really fun to read Burt, thanks for sharing it!

When he went into the water at the lake he died very quickly, it was because his body fat percentage was so low. His family also made the decision to donate his organs, which I think is incredible. I don't think any of his kids run anymore, that I know of. I knew Scott (his son) was very fast in high school as well as one of his daughters.

LSD in Del Rio. AP: 8:43

Started out at my house and ran toward the West gate of the base.  The West gate closes at 8 a.m. and I barely made it before the gate closed.

Ran down to the highway where my running journey would continue.  Yes,  I ran on the shoulder of the highway for 12 miles.  Ran North toward Del Rio (6 miles).  At mile 6, I stopped to GU and someone actually pulled over to see if I was OK.  Texans are sweet, even though the fellow frightened me a bit.  I ran along side a border road (where boarder patrol catches illegals),and  hoped they wouldn't get mad at me.

Made it to Del Rio city and stopped at a gas station to fill my water bottle.  Continued East on the highway that goes to San Antonio.  The entire 6 miles was in a head wind, nothing new to me.  Scenery was ugly.  I watched airplanes in the sky wondering if my husband was flying one.

Made it back to the base (Main entrance), and the guard asked for my ID and how far I had ran.  I told him I was at mile 14, he about passed out.  The other guard mentioned he saw me earlier at the West gate.  They were both amazed.

Last happy two miles on base. :)

No running companions this morning.  My friend Elyse wanted me to do 3 miles with her and when I got to her house there was no answer.  People do not understand the run!

I had the perfect run this morning, no lie.  3 mile warm up with Elyse in the pitch black, stars were beautiful and the big orange Texas moon was lowering on the horizon.

Dropped Elyse off and went another 7.  I paid no attention to my watch but I was surprised that when I got home each mile was progressively faster.  Today and tomorrow's runs are really just to shake things out for the marathon next week.  Humidity and temperature was perfect.

YAY! Guess what? we were watching the same big beautiful moon set! I got to watch it set behind the Oquirrh mtn and light up the horizion as it drifted behind the temple before setting. You got to watch the TX moon drift out on the horizon. :) I love this!!! We were running together this morning - THAT is why the run went so well :) yes, I'm taking full credit!

Race Report:

I was planning to do the marathon at an 8:20 pace, that isn't much to ask for.  Weather was 80 degrees at the start and extremely humid.

When we got to the race in Groveton there were about 300 runners running the half or the full marathon.  I hadn't realized the course was an out and back TWICE for the marathon.  Started out feeling fine.  By mile 6, I was already really warm and not feeling very fresh.  80 degrees and lots of humidity takes the running spirits right out of you.  We turned around and headed straight into a headwind.  I decided at the half I would call it a good effort. :)

All of my splits were right on the money... 8:20 ish pace.

I had a lot of fun running with David and spending some quality time with him during the weekend.   I need to start training better and obtaining new goals.  All of the nice races here are in the winter months.  I have to drive between 6-8 hours to get to any of them.  There aren't any races they drive you to the top of the mountain and let you run down the hill.  Oh how I miss the mountains of Utah.

Hi Tara. I might be a little consistent, but I feel I have so far to go and that I am loosing fitness.

As for a running husband, it is a good thing. Sometimes he like to be my coach, which can be good and bad. He doesn't understand why I can't keep up with him sometimes.

I had so much fun at this race!!!  I think I can put this race as one of my top ten favorites!

The race itself was supposed to be a surprise course, with challenges that are kept a secret.  So we did not receive any information about the course and rules until the day of the race.  Each team consisted of 4-8 members. David, Joe, Jeff, and I made up an extreme team of 4 people, so we weren't going to do a relay race.

The bike portion of the race was 23 miles on a new highway, and part of a busy highway down to the lake.  We took off on the bike drafting off of each other and powering down the road.  We passed probably 15 teams and then Joe got a flat.  We quickly pulled over to the side of the road and Jeff took the tire apart.  Well, it wasn't just a fast tire change.  We had to change the tire three times.  By that time all of the teams had caught up to us, plus more.

We got to the exchange point where we were to put our bikes in the car and change our shoes.  WELL, sadly, our driver was nowhere to be found.  We gave him a call and he was about 15-20 minutes away.  Grrrrr.  By the time our driver showed, we really didn't care too much about the race.

We started the run at about a 7mm, I quickly gued so I could keep up with the men.  During the run they had secret challenges we had to do.  We had to scoot through a 7 ft plastic tube, carry a railroad tie, push a big tire around and shoot a paintball gun.

After the run the guys had to raft a mile on the lake.  I just had to launch and retreat the raft, no rafting for me.  After they got out of the water, we ran up the dock and toward a wall we had to climb over.  We climbed over the wall and finished.

Later we learned that we had passed the winners while we were on the bike, back at about mile 8.  We were sad about the outcome of the race but we had so much DANG fun!  I LOVED racing with my husband on my team.  Great day in Del Rio.

Seriously, how awesome is this?!? If it weren't for the snafus you experienced you would've totally taken 1st place! Shoot. But still, it sounds like an amazing race that I will have to try with you sometime soon :) This would totally be worth heading down there for! Just one question...why no rafting for you?

From Bec on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 09:25:35 from 68.206.133.141

You would LOVE this race! I didn't have to raft because they only allowed three people in a raft. I think they actually didn't have enough rafts to fit two people per raft. Watching three big guys was entertaining.

There was even an international team at the race. They were from Mexico. Hmmm, they may have only had to drive 15 minutes to the start from their house.

15 miles in the Rio.  Very warm and humid out, BUT I was blessed with a breezy wind.  Yes, this was that wind that I have complained about during some of my earlier runs, not today.

8 miles alone on the sleeping base.  I saw snake #1 as I headed out from the West gate, it made me about cry.  I HATE snakes.  I saw snake #2 as I headed toward the West gate the second time.  I screamed and ran away as fast as I could.  Both snakes were very long (3 feet), and they were black.

I found 5 golf balls on my way home as I ran past the golf course and picked up three to add to David and I's golf ball collection.  We have now found 10 golf balls total for our collection.

I went back to the house and got David.  We ran the next 7 miles together.   We saw snake #3 by the poop pound.  :(

I was proud that I had actually picked up the pace and I didn't complain. I enjoyed listening to David talk about T-38s (the new jet he will be flying).

Legs were still super sore when I woke up this morning.

6 miles alone.  I only saw one snake today and it was a baby.  :)

Got to my house to pick up David and took Shot Blocks, Gatorade, and SaltStick. I was a sweaty mess.

First three miles with David were good and then I had an emotional breakdown. Yes, I started crying and craving a run with girls that go my speed.  Sorry David.  I do love running with my husband but some days it is hard for me to strike up a conversation with him while we run.  Sometimes I get so concerned how fast we are going I forget to relax. Anyway, the humidity was doing me in and I cried.  He told me to relax and that I was doing great.  We ran 2 more miles.  6 total miles together.

He dropped me off at the house and I tried to call Elyse to go out for 5 miles, she didn't pick up.  I stood in my house and debated whether or not I was going to pick myself off the floor and get outside.  I finally did.

Schedule called for 17 miles but I called it a day at 16 and walked a mile home.  Sure this sounds pathetic but I need to mentally get in the game of my long runs.  Yes, they are hard and yes, I can do them!

Ice bath.

I blame my sore legs on the weights I did this week.  Next week I will go easier on the weights.

I know you were tired and sore from weights (one reason I've avoided them lately!), but you did a great job and that mental toughness will only make you stronger. I know what new song I need to download on my running tunes list.

Woke up to a BIG Texas rain storm.  It was pouring outside!  There was so much lightening the entire morning, it was unsafe to go outside.  Cooled the area down.  :)

Headed to the TM to get miles in.  Managed to get 10 in before I thought I was suppose to go to work.  Came home, no work for me.  I hate getting up early for no reason.

2 miles to and from the gym in the evening. Did a weight session that felt better than last week.

Left leg in A LOT of pain. POOP!

Today Laughlin had a fun little race to celebrate Diversity Day here at the base.  I REALLY was not planning to race today, but I couldn't calm the horses down!

I warmed up and my hip was killing.  When we were off, the pain went away briefly in my mind.  I got really excited and I was easily the leading girl, so I had to hold my pace, right?  AP for the race was 7:20.  I got a hard time from some of the leading men because I couldn't keep up with them.  I told them they were just getting faster and they laughed.

1 mile cool down.

1 mile run to the gym.  Did my weight session and felt really fatigued.  I want to get faster and I don't feel like I am.

um, didn't you do speed work yesterday? Don't be too hard on yourself. You're also adjusting to the new environment (heat and humidity). I'm glad you let those horses carry you - and I hope you threw a little trash talk at those boys too! :)

Congrats on an awesome win - not that I didn't expect it! Did you win anything fun?

From flatlander on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 04:49:52 from 76.31.26.153

Good job, do not worry about speed, it will come, even in these temperatures. Then when you get cool weather you will be flying. So for Diversity Day did they give you jelly beans where the colors don't match the flavor? That's what they did at my work for our sensitivity training.

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 18:32:05 from 69.131.141.92

Awesome, congrats to your husband and you, T-38s are awesome! I was a B-1 guy (deployed 3 times, separated a couple months ago) but I hope y'all get what you want. I just get excited for young guys going through. Just make sure you talk him out of f-15c's!

From Bec on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 18:42:15 from 68.206.133.141

How cool is that?? I love meeting other AF people, especially runners. B-1s look awesome from what I have seen. 3 deployments would be difficult. I am sure your family has learned a lot from the experiences through the Air Force.

What suggestions do you have about fighters or bombers? My husband has always wanted the F-16. I just think he is crazy. As for me, I don't really know what would be the best for a family. I expect the TDYs and deployments. I try not to think about it too much.

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 18:53:04 from 69.131.141.92

I am obviously biased but I think the B-1 has the best family life. 12 months at home followed by 6 months at a cushy SW Asia AFB. Laid back community as well and good support at home. With B-52s, he'll be home but busy with stupid ORIs and OREs. F-16s are a great way to go and carry a lot of opportunities to live overseas -- perfect for a couple with no kids. The only downside is that they really eat their young in that community and overtime is needed to get ahead (according to the viper guys I've talked to in the past). F-15s are probably the worst for family life unless he can get strike eagles which are pretty good, but possible long hours as well. Don't know much about A-10s, but I hear really good things.

Exciting times for you guys! We were in your position 10 years ago and I remember it as being one of the craziest and coolest times of my life. I wish you all the best.

From Bec on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 19:05:23 from 68.206.133.141

Thank you so much for the information. We are looking forward to finding out what will be doing in the next few months. We are also considering FAIPing here and starting a family. (Yes, I know, Del Rio). :(

It is so good to hear first-hand what to expect from Air Force life. Sometimes I feel like I am living in the dark as to what to expect from where the next few years will take us. I know our situation is always subject to change. Thanks for your help.

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 19:21:13 from 69.131.141.92

FAIPs make awesome pilots, so despite the thought of living in Del for 3 years, it's not a bad move, and maybe you can improve your position.

We had 2 kids in the midst of all the deployments. It's a fact of life but you can definitely do it. If he goes FAIP, the deployments may not even be around by the time he goes operational, which would be awesome for you guys.

Jody, I don't know if I love the wildlife here. I am scared of skunks and snakes. I did read about all of the wildlife you have seen in Texas since you have been here. Tons of road kill too... There is always some dead animal on the side of the highway as I drive into town.

I went running with my friend while I wore my headlamp one morning and she totally made fun of me! I am just scared a creature is going to jump out from somewhere.

That frog was pretty cute. I see a lot of bunnies that look like rocks and then they move. Startles both of us.

I am training for Des News. I am awfully scared of the elevation and the hills, but I need to train for something. There aren't any Texas marathons in the summer because of the weather. Should be fun.

Nice mileage this week! Way to get after it yesterday with the repeats.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Schedule called for a 21 miler.  I just did NOT want to think about this run until I had to do it.  Alarm went off at 5:30.  Hit snooze and didn't start my run until 6:40.

On the base I run in loops, tangents, circles, point to points, and to and from the gym.  Sometimes I go past the same spot up to six times on a run.  I HAVE to keep my brain thinking about long runs in short mileage sections or else I just blow up.

Ran 3.75 from my house out to the Main gate and back to my water corner.

Ran 2.25 From the corner up to the gym via the West housing loop.

Picked up David, drank Gatorade and took a GU.  We ran out to the poop pond, around it and made it to the warm drinking fountain in 3 miles.  We ran along the flight line (1 mile), up to the gym, out to the West gate, and back to our house for a total of  3 miles.

I came home and changed my entire soaking wet running outfit, drank Gatorade, and took another GU.  Ran to the track, 1 mile around the track, 3 miles on the TM (house of refuge), and 1 mile back home.

It all totaled out to be 20 miles.  8:20 AP.  Legs felt absolutely terrific.

I am so so so so proud of my workouts, miles, and motivation this week.  My running doesn't always feel this great.   :)

From Bec on Sun, Jun 10, 2012 at 08:09:53 from 68.206.133.141

Maika, Thank you so much for the comment. Long runs really do build up your confidence for the marathon. Sometimes they just aren't as fun as the race. ;) We live at Laughlin Air Force Base. It's down in the corner of Southwest Texas next to Mexico. Sounds like your brother is in the Army? Cool. I love people that are willing to serve our country.

Smooth, Thanks for your comment. Glad to see that you are on the blog. I HAVE to keep my mind occupied or else I will just start crying.

Nancy, We do live on a base. Sometimes I like it, other times not so fun. Sadly, the base is not big enough to just run around it in a big circle.

Great job this week!

Thanks RAD, I am so excited!

IJR, I am not familiar with this heat/humidity. Everyday I want to cry a little more.

Jody, The wind is terrible, right? That is why I have to run North/South here, while you have to run East/ West. Then we will get a side breeze to somewhat dry the sweat!

From Jody on Thu, Jun 14, 2012 at 19:29:06 from 99.127.13.81

There are days I would die without the breeze. I am a disaster when I am done running. I do like the humidity though when it comes to my skin - it is much happier here.

We have a place in fort worth called sweet Sammie's that takes any flavor of blue bell and makes an ice cream sandwich with one of 12 different varieties of homemade cookies. The best!! You must try if you see come to FW.

Dear Officer,

Have you ever tried to run 15-20 miles in silence?  Yeah, that's what I thought.  I will take my earphones out when you approaching, other than that, I will probably be "sneaking" my music.  Thank you for the safety concern, now I will be safer on the sidewalk as I run.  :)

It's just too hot around here!!!!  Started running and at 2.5 I had to stop and walk... Just then Col. Peters (fast old running man) saw me in his car and pulled over.  He was laughing so hard at me and said, "I really like your pace, you sure are going fast!"  He is just full of sarcasm.  Anyway, at least I started running again after I saw him.

I got to the gym after 4 miles and I needed a drink.  I guess a big drink because I sat at the fountain gulping the water.  I was dripping everywhere, I was such a mess.  Ran 5 miles on a TM next to a mom I chatted with the whole time.  It felt so nice to run next to someone just talking about stuff, it made the time fly by a lot faster.

Ran 1 mile home and guzzled Gatorade until I had a massive belly ache.  Running doesn't feel to great as of lately.

Great 20 miler this morning.  There was a cool breeze and a little bit of an overcast.

First 10 miles rocked.  I stopped three time (quickly) to Gatorade (2x) and GU (1x).

Picked up David and my pace felt like it fell, but it didn't.  Going West nearly killed me over and I kept stopping to cool down, it was frustrating.

Got home and stood in my kitchen for about 10 min to cool down and chew on ice.  (mile 17)

Do you have a garmin 305 or 405? I have a 405 and I sweat so much it triggers it to either beep like crazy or switched it from training to normal watch mode. Wondering if you have the same problem.

From Bec on Mon, Jul 02, 2012 at 19:14:50 from 68.206.133.141

Jody, I have a Timex GPS watch that is waterproof. The face has been foggy a few times from the humidity, which is typical of Timex. My husband has the Garmin 310, which is also waterproof and has not had any issues. I can see why your watch would go crazy from the sweat and moisture.

I have been trying to drink more often during my runs thanks to what I have read on your blog. Thank you! I have felt a little bit better not drinking so much at one time.

Ran back down the beautiful hills back to Rachel's house.  We chatted for a long time after the run.  So nice to spend some time with her on a killer run.

Oh boy, where do I begin with this adventure?  My mom is 59 and had the desire to participate in the Lavender Days 5k.  I saw there was a half marathon and my running schedule called for a 13 miler.  This would be a great chance for me to get my mom a little more involved.

We spent the night in Spanish Fork at my cousin's house.  We arrived at their home at 10 pm and didn't get to be until 12:30.  I didn't sleep until one and woke up to my mom having some kind of a health problem.  Possibly a stroke?  I have had no idea, I was ready to call 911.  After a few minutes she seemed okay and had calmed down a little.  I didn't know if she would be okay to walk the 5k.

We got to the farm at 6:00 and I ran onto one of the last buses to get up to the start.  I got there, used the bathroom and went and stood behind the start line.  SMALL race with a lot of fast runners.  My legs and body didn't feel like moving at an amazing fast pace, so I decided to take it easy and not kill myself.  Tempo and marathon pace at the least was my goal.

Splits were okay the first six miles, then we hit the uphill.  Mile 10 we were still going uphill, mile 11 we were now going really uphill.  I stopped a few times.  Last mile and a half were downhill.  :)

I finished the race and my mom was there cheering me in at the end. :)  I could tell she had a good time and finished strong!  I was WAY more proud of her than I was for myself.  I really had a bad day out there.

This race just made me feel out of shape.  I was going slow but I was really struggling.  Very discouraging for the upcoming marathon.  Oh well, nothing I can do at this point.  I have never trained as hard as I have for a marathon and I feel like my pace is just slowing.

From Bill on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 13:10:41 from 71.32.206.223

I measured that race for USATF certification Thursday and knew it would be a tough race for many just by where the uphills were and the dirt you had to run through while running through the Lavender. I am sure it was challenging, but that is a good thing leading up to a marathon. Most runners start to wear down from marathon training as it gets closer. Just keep doing the right stuff between now and your race and the outcome will be good. Rest is not always a bad thing. Just don't taper too much, sharpen. Hope all is well with your Mom.

From Bec on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 13:19:28 from 71.199.9.12

Thank you so much for your comment Bill. Going into the race I wasn't planning to do anything amazing. Mentally the race was difficult because of the course and the fast running field that showed up. I will heed your advice for the taper. For me, tapering is one the most difficult things to do before a marathon. Not running enough, running too much. The goal is to show up on race day feeling fresh and sharp like you said.

From Jake K on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 13:38:04 from 67.177.11.154

Bec - you did a great job today. That course is a great simulator for the SECOND half of a marathon - its tough and boring! It didn't help that it was pretty humid out this morning as well. Chalk it up to good training and don't get down on yourself.

And Bill - once again, thanks for doing such a great job measuring the course.

From runningafterbabies on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 14:59:30 from 71.195.219.247

Bec - that was definitely a TOUGH course. Combine the hills with the dirt and humidity, I'd say you hung in there. It will make you so much stronger in the marathon!

From Andrea on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 15:42:30 from 67.177.11.154

Nice job today! Maybe not quite what you were hoping, but you gotta take into account the altitude, the relentless uphill, the dirt...I think everyone was feeling out of shape from that course! Take it as a great training run :)

From SlowJoe on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 17:27:32 from 69.131.141.92

I agree, don't draw too many conclusions from your actual time - you got a great training run out of it on a tough course. Nice job, and enjoy NOT being in Del Rio!

From Rachelle on Sat, Jul 14, 2012 at 22:31:39 from 66.7.127.115

Bec do not let this race get in your head at all. I know just how fit you are and you are ready for the marathon. It would not surprise me one bit if you pace Des new just as fast if not faster than you did the half today. It really was a tough course and I am pretty sure you were just concerned about your Mom the entire way which added stress to everything.

I am so proud of your Mom that totally rocks. I am sad I didn't see you afterwards or before. :( I think I am going to come watch Des News and will run you in if you want me to.

From Bec on Sun, Jul 15, 2012 at 13:25:57 from 71.199.9.12

Jake, Thank you for the motivation. I like how you described this half as the last half of a marathon, that really helps me mentally.

Melody, You totally rocked the 5k! Words of advice from you and other AMAZING runners on the blog help me to plug along. That course was the Beast from the East.

Andrea, Thanks for the comment. Sometimes I don't take anything into account and I just become a big running baby (true). Anyway, so cool that you and other runners could come down and completely own the course!

Joe, I AM out of Del Rio! Nothing else should matter. Even if I am running uphill, it's better than the Texas heat/humidity and running in circles.

Rachelle, You are so dang sweet. Thanks for your comments. I was sad that we didn't stay very long after the race, we were in a hurry to get home. I would LOVE it if you ran me in for Des News. I know Rachel will also be doing that, more the merrier. Seeing you two will help me keep pushing and maybe keeping me from saying too many swear words. I think you should run the 10k, such a fast and fun course. You would set the road on fire. :)

Smooth, I was so so so proud of my mom yesterday. I think she was the cutest thing on that course. Thank you for the positive vibes.

8 miles with the girls and Mike on the JRP.  I pleased to run a little bit with RAD's sweet sister QP from the blog.  She made me laugh when she told us about her treasure chest of random things she finds on her runs.  Every pirate has to have a treasure chest, right?

Rachel (beast lady on the bike) rode to JRP and after a 1 mile warm up kicked into some crazy tempo mileage with me.  It felt so good out and the company was so grand, our legs were just speeding up.  We had to force ourselves to slow down.  Rachel always kicks it the last mile and she pushed me to the end with her quick stride.  Just hope she plans to do the same for me at the upcoming marathon.  I just hope I won't be being a big baby that day.

Fun times.  I love Utah running!  So fun to spend time with Smooth and Wendy too.  :)

From Bec on Tue, Aug 14, 2012 at 20:08:22 from 70.115.203.100

IJR, Not many people blogging? Maybe everyone is burnt out from running. It's the heat here in Texas that has been a contributing factor to not wanting to run and blog for me!

RAD, I miss you AND I need to call you back. I think it was a week or so ago I told you I was going to call.

You probably need to come back to UT so you can run with me and Rachel and life will be good. :)

Did you write a report for Des News? I'll go check. I finally stalked your time (since you never blogged) and you did really well. Why so sad.....?

For the most part, I feel really safe running on the Air Force base that I live on.  We are about five miles from the border of Mexico.  I have heard that there have been illegals on the base because they see the lights and the water tower and they think they are in Del Rio.  My husband has been asked by Border Patrol as he was running on base if he had seen illegals on his route.

Yesterday there were 132 inmates that escaped from a prison in Mexico about 50 miles away from where we live.  I get nervous about running in the dark at 6 in the morning.  The most frightening things I have seen on base are  snakes and skunks.  If I encountered illegals, I might pee my pants and run as fast as I can.  Anyway, just blogging my thoughts.

10k race in Del Rio!!!

David and I decided that we would race today.  He registered for the 5k and I registered for the 10k.  Both races were $20.  I don't think I have ever paid $20 for a race at late registration, nice.

This was a chipped time race, rare for Del Rio... The chips went around the ankle and were extremely uncomfortable.  By the time David and I had warmed up I knew the chip would cause a case of chafing.  By the end of the 10k, sure enough, I had chafing around my ankle from the stupid chip.

Starting line.... They had mats to run across at the start line BUT they were not set out.  They also had a mass start and told the 10k folk to go clear to the back....???? I stayed at the back of the 5k mass.  This really bothered me since I had to swim through the 5k folk when the race started.

Started running and it was going well until my left shoe was untied. Lame.  Had to pull over.  It wasn't until well past a mile I noticed I had not started my watch!  Rookie mistakes!  What was I thinking?

The course was challenging, I won't lie.  Lots of rolling hills and of course the Beast from the East Texas wind making it's appearance.  I maintained the lead for the women for the entire race.  I think I was 4th overall.  I walked a little at mile 4.5 to let my heart rate fall.  Finished in 46 min or a little under.

I was actually pleased with my time and performance today.  David took 2nd at the 5k with a 19:12 or something like that.  I was proud of the hubby for coming off of one of the most stressful years of his life and still being able to run so strong.  He really amazes me.

We waited around for the results for 2 HOURS!!!!! Then the RD said they had a mis-hap with the results and sent EVERYONE home.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????  Sadly, I was not surprised.  Del Rio for ya.  Pretty sad that those that performed extremely well did not get recognized.  The winner of the 10k ran it in 33 minutes.  He was from a running club in Mexico.  Too bad I can't hop the border to go and run with what seemed a pretty decent running club.

What a fiasco of a race! I guess even $20 was probably overpriced. Nice job in it though, despite all the weird stuff. Hopefully y'all won't be there too much longer!

Looks like we will be staying 260 miles from anywhere (Del Rio) for another 3-4 years.  Seesh, it's not as bad as it sounds.

10 miles on the TM since it was 80 outside with 80% humidity.  I just wasn't in the mood to face that.

Went downtown to Del Rio to check out a Zumbathon.  Totally lame.  There were about 10-15 people standing in the rain by a stage.  I didn't really know if they were planning to dance/workout or not?? My friend and I left and drove home.  I get Zumba certified next week.  I hope to put a kick butt class together and teach somewhere in Del Rio a few times a week.  It will be a great change from running.

My husband was selected in his class flight to be an Instructor Pilot here.  I am really proud of the hard work he has already put in this last year.  They don't select the weak to be instructors.  I think he will rock!!! On a positive side to staying in Del Rio, he will be less likely to deploy.  I get to see my husband a little bit most days.  :)  He will still be putting in 12+ hours everyday.  Another positive note is that we will be staying in San Antonio for a few months.  HELLOOOOO running clubs.  :) For sure I will find some runners in the city, I just have to.

Congrats to your husband (and you)! Sorry about having to stay at Laughlin, but getting selected as a FAIP can definitely be a good deal in the long run. Plus you can make some good TDY money at PIT, and San Antonio is a lot more fun. I had a 4-month tdy there a few years ago (before we had kids) and we had a lot of fun.

And nice going on the 10-miler on the TM, sounds brutal!

From Bec on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 13:00:54 from 70.115.203.100

Thank you so much Joe! We were actually all smiles when we found out about the FAIP. Seemed like everyone around us was giving us a big pity party. I really hope it won't be that bad. I just REALLY need to find someone that will run with me.

The Air Force is exciting and nerve racking at the same time. The public announcement of where your assignment will be is just a big bag of nerves.

The hard part is being stuck in Del Rio a few more years. A change of scenery would have been real nice.

From flatlander on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 15:19:57 from 76.31.26.153

Congratulations to your husband. My sister and her husband lived in Del Rio for a while, and San Antonio too (he is a doctor). They liked SA a lot and I'm sure you will, lots of runners there. The time in Del Rio will fly by, but I'm sure one of the hardest parts is finding races.

From RAD on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:43:08 from 98.202.23.178

I'm SO excited for David, not so much for you :) However, getting Zumba certified and starting your own little baby running club? You have NO idea how that will flower over the next few years. Maybe you won't want to leave then? :)

SA will be a fun little vaca for you too. I may be getting a good lump of frequent flier miles here soon and was thinking I may need to take a trip to come see you! It wouldn't be long, but it would be worth it!

10 miles on the TM, you're gonna love that thing by the time you leave! :)

From Bec on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 14:06:04 from 70.115.203.100

Flatlander, The racing and running community in Del Rio is very dismal. I HATE running here in the summer and for the next few summers I will probably be best friends with the TM. We are excited to go to SA and enjoy the food and atmosphere there. Too bad it will only be for a little while.

Rachel, It would be awesome if you came to visit! We could find a lot of fun things to do if you did come and visit.

You are excited for David? Why?? I feel bad for him a little. 12+ hour days in the heat of the summer? This was by far NOT our first choice, but we will deal with it. It is a little nerve racking watching all of our friends leave and fly planes they most likely want to fly. Being a FAIP is not a coveted job by any means.

We will both have a positive attitude about it and HOPEFULLY we will end up with something that we will both be excited about.

From RAD on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 15:32:12 from 98.202.23.178

I guess I thought it was a good thing to be an instructor, kind of a coveted job given to the best. Despite the long hours, I thought it was something he wanted and would enjoy. If is isn't then that really stinks :( I guess that means that they wanted him, but he wanted something different. Uggghh, never a fun place to be.

Base 5k today!  David and I registered and waited around for the 9:30 race start for about an hour.  As usual, there were hardly any runners.  Over the past year, the races have been getting less and less people.  So sad, the workers that run the races don't care and they don't really advertise.

The weather had dropped from 90 to 60 in a day so it felt very cold to us!  David and I warmed up a little and watched the little kids run an 800 meter race on the track.  They gave the kids prizes and then had us line up for the race.  The race course is always the same, so we knew where we were off to.

I actually felt really good for most of the race.  I was in second (behind my husband) for the majority of the race until a dude sprinted into the finish.  :(

David won and I was the first woman, but they awarded me as third place.  This was the best 5k time I have had on any base 5k, so I was proud.

Running With the Bulls is a BIG DEAL in Del Rio.  Last year David and I both won first place overall and we were a proud Del Rio couple.  Last year the course was not marked properly and it was short. This year the race was marked well.  I knew I had to be in the low 20s to win or break 20 min and win for the ladies.

The gun went and we were off!! I was trying to keep up with a 13 year old that is getting faster at every race.  I had to work really hard to keep her.  1 mile in she took off.  I kept calm and maintained my pace.

At the 2nd mile I was catching up to her.  The last .70 is up a hill and I ALMOST had her.  The last stretch was coming down a hill and into the finish.  She was literally steps in front of me and she looked like she was falling apart.  Just at the end, a girl from behind came in and sprinted to the finish.  She was 7 seconds in front, then the 13 year old was 3 seconds in front of me.

I was very happy with my 5k performance since I rarely race 5ks. I did a 10k about a month ago and beat the winner of the Running With The Bulls by MINUTES.  I was surprised by the outcome of this race.

David was 3rd overall for the men.  Just wasn't the day for the Sondrups to take home the 1st place hardware.

It was wonderful visiting with you and I hope you are home safe and snug now.

TURKEY TROT DAY!!!

After the last race, I was extremely nervous that someone fast would show up to the 5K and earn my turkey.  I had also promised I would make a turkey for the Thanksgiving festivities at this upcoming T-day, so the pressure was on.

Warmed up with David and he gave me some great 5K strategies.

1. Stay with or behind the person that is in your running area that you want to beat.

2. Listen to their breathing.  If they are working hard and you are chill, you will surely be able to pass them up.

3.  Save some room for a kick at the end of the race.

Off we went down the streets of Laughlin and the first mile a cross country chick totally passed me up.  I started to stress a little but I knew if she won, I could still get my turkey (for my age group).  I let her go and relaxed into a nice pace behind some men.

The winds really blow on the base, so I used the group of men as my shield.  I could still see my husband up ahead in second place, taking it easy at this point, he looked strong.  Mile 2 is a hill and I knew I could regain the lead for the ladies. (Del Rio runners don't run too many hills).  I passed the group of men, the girl up ahead, and now I was in third, after my husband.

Coming down the hill I ripped into a good stride.  Last mile is uphill and I kept the lead.  Ran into the finish at 20:40, a definite course PR.  I was SUPER proud of my performance.

David won as well!!  On the last quarter mile, he caught the fast cross country boy and flew in to the finish.  The Sondrups brought not only 1 turkey home, but 2!!! Yahoo!  We had a lot of fun this morning.  :)

There was suppose to be a base 5k today...

We woke up this morning and it was foggy out.  We got to the gym to register for the 5k and no one was sitting at the table.  They told us inside the gym they might cancel the race because so far it was only us two that had shown up.  We went to the bathroom and other runners had started accumulating.  They then told us that since it was foggy, the visibility was poor, so they ended up canceling the race.  REALLY?? No one was surprised that they canceled their poor advertised free race.  Conditions were ideal for running.

David amd I ran the course as well as a father son duo.  Base races really are lame.  The people in charge have probably never have ran a step in their lives so they don't know how to put on decent races.  At least they still put together some races.

David and I ran the course twice and then added two miles.  I ran three miles on the TM and one mile home totaling twelve.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Dec 02, 2012 at 14:56:27 from 69.131.141.92

I thought the racing scene was bad here, but you've had some poor experiences! I think on base you sometimes just get folks trying to organize a race as a leadership bullet for their EPR/OPR, and they could care less about how it actually goes.

From Bec on Sun, Dec 02, 2012 at 21:15:51 from 50.84.20.42

Flatlander,

These people on base in charge of the 5Ks could honestly care less. They find any reason to cancel.

Joe,

I don't know what to do about the race situation here. I don't want to be the lady that gripes about everything but how can I get across my frustrations to them? You are exactly correct about the EPR/OPR part. They could care less if people actually show up to their races.

Headed to the new gym and found myself on a state of the art TM.  First I watched TV and then I discovered I could play Solitaire on the TM!!!  It took a lot of concentration not to trip or fall off as I moved the cards around on the screen.  I played the game until my hands got to sweaty.

Winter Wonder Land run with Rachel this morning!  I was a little nervous running in snow since I kind of have forgotten how to run in snow.  Rachel got to my house and we had started a little later than planned, so we decided to run 12.

We ran on the Murdock Trail in Lehi going up toward American Fork.  I haven't ran the complete trail, so I was just as confused as Rachel on some spots on the trail.  We figured out where to go because of the previous foot prints in the fresh snow.

At time the snow was really in our face and the road was comnpletely slushy.  Runs like this really bring meaning to running for me.  Beautiful scenery and a special friend to talk and run through it with.  If I still lived by Rachel, I think my weekly mileage could easily double if I ran everyday with her.  There is just a deeper meaning to running when you have someone you can capture the essence of a run with.  :)
