| Wanted to start the year out with a bang. This meant hooking up with Oreo and tackling Grandeur Peak Loop. He had never done it, so wanted to take him up. As usual the first 2 miles are a never ending slogfest on a steep vertical stair stepper. Beautiful views and blue sky with no wind. hotter than we expected. Sweating like a beast. Backside was sweet. No falls today. Tired and out of gas by the end but feel good. |

| First two miles very sore quads and low energy from yesterday's Grandeur pounding, but then things loosened up and I felt good. Just a spin around the neighborhood in the fine spring weather. Good news too, I went to the Ortho doc and found I have no fractures or significant strains in wrist from fall on ice last month, just nagging pain which I can deal with. |

| So tired and sluggish today...but went up to Millcreek and ran the Burch Hollow to Elbow Fork Trail. Havent been on this segment for awhile but it reminded me it is one of the best of the Pipeline... definitely more vertical but was beautiful. Had to walk more of the pitches than normal. Spikes were handy. This trail is in good shape though and glad that the Bathroom is still open at the Elbow Fork area. Road is snowpacked and beautiful at that junction |

| We are staying in Princeville Kauai for a vacation and as my good wife was sleeping in I went out for a jaunt around where we were staying. SO beautiful here. Lush green mountains surrounding the valley area of Hanalei Bay. Easy running along the ocean edge and around some golf course trails before the golfers out. Feels perfect here. Love extra boost being a sea level to the oxygen in the system. Definitely noticeable. |

| Kalalau trail day. Napali Coastline. This is a trail I have been wanting to see and do for years. I came to Kauai about 5 years ago and really did not do the trail running scene yet. So didnt even know anything about this trail. I then wanted to do it even more as Bryce wrote about it last year. I am only here for 5 days, and knew I likely did not have the full 22 mile round trip in me. Especially Bryce who is a stud runner posted that it was the hardest 22 miles he has ever done. So I ended up doing just over half. Good enough to tire me out and also see what the fuss is all about. This trail is a tough one. I started at first light and was basically the only one on the trail except for a forest dweller I passed about 5 miles in. He was wearing flip flops, hadnt had a bath or shave for a couple years and looked like he had all his belonging in a few plastic sacs tied to his waist. He was in no hurry. The first two miles are widely used and because of that there is a well worn trail. After that much of the trail is overgrown and becomes a narrow single track that is never flat. So rare to even be able to run for any consistent pace. The jungle is barely contained for most of it and while not quite bushwacking is close. THe ground is rocks and roots and for a trudger like me that means I rolled my ankles, stubbed my toes and such to many times to count and went down twice. I also ran through a million serious face covering spider webs across the trail with big freaking spiders in them. THat being said, the views are surreal and stunning and truly Jurassic parkish (i guess that is why they filmed it here). It is so unique to be in such a place, hundreds of feet up on a single track above the pounding surf with intermittent views of this jagged prehistoric coastline. Anyway, it was cool. Glad I did it. It took me almost 3.5 hours to cover those 11 miles. Especially slow the last 1.5 because the busses had unloaded and I bet I ran into about 150 people now coming on the first bit of the hike. No running for more than 50 feet before stopping to let some hikers pass. Perfect. | |

| Going to ride the road mile urge just a bit longer as the trails I usually run are in a sloppy state. Wanted to get into double digits to make Oreo nervous. Ran up past Old Mill to Porcupine Grill then up to Wasatch Blvd going South. Taking it at a steady pace until hot runner chicka passed me motoring...held on following her for a a couple miles but couldnt keep pace. haha. Noticed some people going on a trail near Mt Oly trailhead that follows Wasatch..so I bailed onto it and enjoyed sweet dirt for a while until it dumped us out above 45th or so. Ran through Mt Oly neighborhoods to 39th then down to 27th and back home. Nice loop. Longest miles in a while. Felt good until lack of energy closing in at mile 11.5. Need to get a few of these in before Ogden Marathon just to know I can do it again. Fun casual day. |

| Always wanted to see more of the BST on the north of SLC so drove to trailhead at City Creek and ran East up the hill trail. Ran for 4 miles or so winding around on various trails on East Bench. There are trails criss crossing all over the place so not sure I was even on the main BST all of the time. Beautiful clear views over SLC, Capital Bldg and UofU. Trail in mostly good shape with a few mud bog areas. Coming done almost ate it though on a shaded stretch of pure ice, slid for about 15 feet and somehow stayed up. Fun times. |

It was a donut free for all. I am not sure why this phrase always enters my head about mile 5 on any run that I do...but it does and it does not encourage me about my 25K Buffalo...I initially was going to try to train for speed on this...but after todays Reverse Big T loop I think my usual survival shufflings will have to suffice. I started out on the Little Cottonwood side parking lot and ran the great switchback entry to the lake and then did a loop around figuring I would go down to the gully trails, but the day was so nice and no one was around and the views up Bells Canyon are always stunning...so I just kept looping the lake which is just under a mile loop. Beautiful sunny day out on the island with a few hundred cool runners. Today I was hoping to break my fastest time on this course which I did not, however I felt strong today and I think the course is about .5 mile longer secondary to a start/finish area change. I really love this course and how it is set up with the hardest steeper section in the middle third of the race and most of last 4 miles downish. I also decided to not use Gu as it always make my stomach churn and I just sipped on a handheld of flat Coke about a swallow a mile which fit the bill just fine for this distance and time. Splits going up the first long switches 9:21, 10:26, 9:10 felt good here just keeping tucked in behind Oreo so he wouldnt see me, plus keeping him in eyeshot gave me some extra motivation to keep the pace strong. Next two miles down hill 8:06, 8:05. Then the push up the steep to Elephant Head aid station 10:15. Caught up with Oreo here and I was feeling strong and had preplanned to try and do the downhill fast as I could 6:55. Settled in behind a strong runnergirl for mile 8 at 9:51, then 10:35 going up the switches, which I love and just seem to fit my eye. I was lucky to get ahead of the horsetrain that Oreo got behind and I was really happy to be able to keep a running pace up the whole incline. Mile 10 9:40 Mile 11 though 16 8:51, 9:11, 10:41, 8:22, 9:04, 8:44 I also took 600 of Ibuprofen at the aid and that help stave off the usual hip pain I get the last 5 miles. Didnt stop my clock so I dont have the split on the last .5. Had 3 brothers running this one. Would have been fun to see if Oreo could have caught me the last 5 if he didnt loose his lunch. Hes a beast when hes feeling good. Hairdog finished strong and Fritz survived to tell the tale...barely. Was a fun day on the island.

| This was just a good ol time in Southern Utah exploring some new trail with a couple of my cool brothers. We went on Fri afternoon and hit up some slot canyon action in Yankee Doodle slot out of Leeds. Hairdog helped keep us alive on the first 100 foot free hanging rappel and then navigation through a water filled slot. Few bangs and scraps but its good for the soul. Next day...run day. Oreo mapped out a route that ended up 22 plus miles on a scorching hot 87 degree (I think hotter in some sections) day. This is primarily a mountain bike used trail and we passed a fair number of them. We started up Hurricane Rim trail then after a bit of a out and back, hooked into the JEM trail then Goulds trail and Goulds rim to finish off the loop. This was a cool one with good company and just the kind of butt kicker I was looking for. There were some low moments in energy and I think I lost all the salt I had in my system. | Ok...this one was a figurative butt kicker for me and a literal crotch destroyer for me...I must have been tired this morning when I put on the glide...because by mile 7 I knew I was in trouble. "Crotch on fire" for those Hunger Games fans out there. Oreo is a tough dude and put the screws on for a round the dam (Pineview) run that always is a tough run for me because of the long straight aways and the seemingly gradual up and wind in the face. I was tight and lagging on energy, but we conquered none the less. This did not give me the psychological boost for the Marathon in two weeks that I was looking for. Anyway... good times...Oreo thanks for the hosting and the Patience with my whining. |

| Great day overall. I say this despite the fact that it was a complete beatdown physically and mentally the last four miles or so. It has been a struggle for whatever reason this year to get enthused about long road running and this marathon...but was definitely cool to run with my brothers and the Huntsville valley is so beautiful. I felt steady until mile 18 then the chains started falling off. I started to feel underfueled and just plain fatigued so couldnt muster the mental juice to endure the pain of the consistent pace. splits first half...8:42, 8:44, 8:36, 8:37, 8:33, 8:28, 8:29, 8:47, 8:44, 8:34, 8:58, 8:37, 8:44...very consistent miles for a 1:52ish half which I thought was perfect. Second half 9:09, 9:09, 9:12, 8:42, 9:35, 9:24, 9:23, 8:53, 9:31, 9:02, 10:12 (ouch), 10:38 (double ouch), 12:01 (ah the blessed pain of it all).. And there it is folks...Props to Joshy and Oreo for a great races and kicking my trash and to Hairdog who I beat but I should because he doesnt even run. Tough kid to finish this sucker. |

| Birch Hollow to Elbow Fork trail then down the Millcreek road because I was hungry. The trail is beautiful, but saw more people on this section than I ever have before. Most seem to stay on Pipeline below Birch because of the climb. Also there was a huge pile of dog poo sitting right in the middle of the trail which sucked. I have noticed less dog hygiene on this trail over the past year... |

| Had killa work weekend and spent most of my 48 hour shift awake and was exhausted and stressed and needed some freedom. So hit it up on Birch Hollow to Elbow Fork trail then another half mile or so up the upper road. So pretty up there right now because the road is still closed to upper Millcreek which makes it a no car territory and few people. Ran free... |

| White Pine Trail up LCC... 3 deer including one that stayed about 100 yards in front of me up the trail for about a quarter mile. 2 squirrels 1 wiley chipmunk Many beautiful vistas...this is a stunning trail from about 1.5 miles and up. I could tell my altitude fitness sucks rocks...but fun stuff today. I tried to keep a running pace up as far as I could. Had to walk here and there on the way up and didnt make it all the way to the lake. Once you hit the above thetree line and you get to 4 massive and barren switchbacks you are still in snow. Could be done but just wasnt feeling the sliding around mojo today. |

As long as I kept a motivated pace I wasnt eaten alive by the swarms of flies up there...but the scenery was beautiful and no one was at the Lake when I got there... thats a first for me. This is a great loop which I have done one time before and was thinking it was only 9.5 miles. Psych...it was 12.5. I'm undertrained to push this but was beautiful scenery and bonus was no mountain bikes as it is odd number day. Lots of hikers to Dog lake but no one the middle 8 miles except one lone geezer mountain runner who looked fresh as a daisy and would kick my trash. |

I was dizzy and enjoying some of the lightening white vision squiggles due to elevation of the trail and being 42% caffeine and donut substrate at the current moment. On somewhat of a whim and for something to do in a new area I signed up for this run that I stumbled across online the last few weeks. this was a cool race held as part of a series of 4 trail races in the Park City area. Glad I did...this was well organized and had cool people around and was a tougher than road marathon half with 1250 elevation gain on singletrack and dirt roads. Main goal was to just keep running even on all the ups. I did, so I was happy on that one...also felt happy to just go that far as it was my longest venture out since the O town marathon wrecked me in May. Beautiful day, with slightly warm temps but I didnt have the energy to rip the shirt off. splits in case I do this again 8:46,9:19,8:48,7:44,7:51,8:48,9:46,8:12,9:47,8:41,8:31,9:15,8:59 Garmin had the course long at 13.44 Good times! And they give a cool glass pint with race logo instead of shirt...not sure why I like that so much but I do.

This is a butt kicker for me...but perfect conditions. 2 miles up and 3000 feet is just a grind and seems never ending but overall felt as good as I ever have going up...eating beef jerky and almonds on the way. Saw no one on way up. Top 1/3 of mountain and whole backside is glorious fall colors. A terrestrial potpourri so to speak. Went over the peak and then the payoff of this loop is the next 3.5 miles. This trail is so cool right now going down to Pipeline. The colors are outstanding the temps perfect and the trail in great shape.
