Okay I am about sick of the crappy air and nasty cold.  I waited until afternoon even though I had the day off and wanted to go this morning, but it was too cold.  It warmed up to about 16 degrees by the time I left after lunch.  Legs felt better today and I had a decent run overall, best one since I started up again.  Went out to Butterfield Park and back.  last mile was 6:01, half downhill, but no matter, still good for me right now.  35:35 for the 5 miles.

Ran out to Fort Herriman and back.  40 degrees out and fresh air beats the heck out 5 degrees and bad air!  I am super tired because I got to bed at 3:00am and got up at 6:00am.  3 hours of sleep on top of my last week is no good.  Hope I don't get sick.  6:57 pace for the run with the last mile in 5:56, good for me right now.

Started P90X two days ago.  I have had it for years now, but never done the program.  I figure it will be good cross training, when I get over the soreness!:)

First Race this year and first real speed workout.  This was the beginning of a crazy busy day! I got up at 4:00am and drove to Provo.  I ran into my assistant coach Greg Shaw picking up my packet.  We ran into our fellow track coach Bryan Nicholson at the buses, small world!

It was cold up the canyon, but it was great during the race.  Greg and I warmed up for 1 mile and then lined up.  I wanted to run 6:00 pace today, this being my first speed all year and me being sore still, plus an easy course.  Greg and I took off slower and kept the pace.  I felt good until mile 5 when I missed the water and was given Gatorade.  A mile later I was cramping in my stomach.  Greg left me around mile 6-7.  I got some water about mile 9ish and felt better again until the end.  No one passed me the whole race, so I'll take it.  Felt good to run faster again, I am excited to run again once I get some good speed work in this year.  1:18:42 for the run.

Afterward I drove home showered, drove to Brigham City to the Temple for the sealing of my sister in-law and her husband to their newly adopted daughter.  Then drove right back home to our Herriman Twilight Track Invite and was there until 10:30pm.  Long day!

I only got about 3 hours of sleep last night, so I was dying today.  Greg has had some IT band issues so we were both hurting for our 20 miler.  We took it way slow with the intention of just getting it done.  We ran from the State Track meet at BYU up to Vivian Park and back.  Packed a bottle belt.  we had a good conversation going that helped us get through a tough run for today. 7:35 ave

My kids did awesome!  Lucy ran a :64 last lap of the mile to pull ahead and win and my boys rocked some 4:17s and 4:19s.  We are in the hunt for possibly two State titles with girls and boys, but it will be close.

Ran with Greg pretty easy from BYU out passed Timpview and back.  Corbin Talley joined us the last mile.  Nice morning, but the day was all over with rain and cold and wind and hot.

We ended up winning State with our girls and lost a close one to Wood Cross by 6 points with our boys!  Lucy was the star even though Kaysha gets more hype.  She ran a sweet 3200 race and dominated the field with a 10:32 (5:05 last mile).  She came back and won the 800 in 2:13, and 30 minutes later came from way behind with a last 100 meter kick to pull us from 4th into 1st in the Medley!  She won all 4 distance races and if you count Cross, all 5 for the year.  Awesome!

Congrats to Corbin Talley for his double 3 peat in Track.  He has won ever since I was at Riverton and we beat Davis with both teams in 2010.  Congrats to Logan Fielding for his first State title with his team!  Great day!

Greg and I ran from Butterfield Canyon to my house this morning.  Super nice morning.  We took a GU around mile 4 and some water.  I wanted to get a good solid tempo run into today with at least 6 miles at 6:00 minute pace or better.  Here are the splits:  First mile warm up 6:50, 6:20, 6:08, 6:08, then we got busy after the GUs, 5:48, 5:49, 5:54, 5:47, 5:50. 47:47 for the 8 miles.  We cooled down from Monarch to my house at a 7:56 mile.  Hope I don't get too sore.  Last big run before Utah Valley, now I can just relax the rest of the time.  Greg did well and was with me all but the 9th mile, but still ran great.  We were both tired and beat up today, so I felt good about the effort and results.  Shooting for a 2:45 next week.

It is always hot too, and today was no different.   Rory and Connor ran sub 52:00 for the 9.1 miles and McKay was around 55 min.  I started a minute behind the team and ended up 4th down with a 56:34 my best time ever.  All of my miles, even the one with the big Lion hill were under 7:00.  Fastest mile was 5:13 and slowest was 6:57.  Legs are trashed now!

Saw a lot of the results for the half marathons around today, and it made me want to run any of them.  None seemed too deep on the guys end.  However, if I would have run one of them it probably would have been deep like Lavendar Days was last year, at least that is my luck usually. :)  And I was too beat up from camp.

I was asked to help with the local race in the town where I grew up.  My friend's dad is the race director.  We came down to Mona last night and stayed with my parents.  I set up the chute, clock, and timing system before the race and had enough time to get a 1 mile warm up in.  Jake Morgan was the only real competition.  He was a :47 high kid in the 400m last year in high school and supposedly ran at Weber.  I didn't know if he was in decent shape or not?  He won that race the last 3 years, including beating me last year.

We took off at around a 5:20 pace.  The course climbs in the last couple miles, so the first mile is the fastest.  We ran together and he kept pulling ahead and then I would catch him on a turn.  This went on until 2 miles where he gapped me by about 6 or 7 seconds.  He looked comfortable, but about 2.5 miles I surged on a flat before we hit the last uphill and he came back to me.  I knew I had to make a move, because there was no way I could out kick him in a 200 meter sprint to the finish.  I realized that he wasn't in as good of shape as I thought when he was coming back to me.  I surged passed him and he dropped back.  I hit the hill hard and kept pulling away.  He ended up about 40 seconds back at the end and totally dropped bad.  First win in 4 years!  Even if it was a little local race I will take it.  17:52 was my final time.  I cooled down and watched my little brother take 4th, and my wife finish with a good time for her.  Jaren ran the kids mile and took 2nd in her age.  Between the 3 of us we came away with $45 in prize money, not bad for a little fun run.

Legs we tired 2 miles into the race, and I never got in a rhythm and always felt tight and sluggish.  I should not have worn my Type As because of the holes in the bottom.  I hit some puddles in the first couple on miles and got water up inside.  Around mile 8 my feet were hurting.  Between that and not being in Half shape I struggled to run the last few miles.  Lucky for me Greg and Brian Summers found me with 3.5 to go and ran with me in, that helped a lot.  1:16:33 for the run with I will take for how I felt.  I never ever loosened up, arms and shoulder were tight too.  Blisters are bad, both about the size of quarters and right on the balls of my feet.  I don"t think I will be able to run for a couple of days.  I did like the course and would like to run it again.

I meant to check in and congratulate you on your Des News Half but I guess I was too busy wallowing in my own self pity.

Congrats. How are your boys looking this summer?

We are now the smallest school in the Canyons School District. Hillcrest has 400 more kids than us is 4A while we remain 5A. The district could not have screwed this up more if they had tried.

Weird after being the largest school in Utah for so many years.

Can't call this epic run easy!  Greg came over early and we drove up to Timpanooke Trail head.  We started running at 6:45am.  I had run on this trail before, but never to the top.  It is a little more rough and technical than the Aspen one in my opinion.  We ran a good pace for the first 6 miles up and then it gets crazy and is hard to go fast when you hit the saddle and the ridge.  We ran into some Ultra guys at about 5 miles up that had started at 5:00am.  They told us that they had made it to the top in 2:20 and that was their fastest time.  We of course had to beat that.  We hit the summit or peak in 1:53:46.  It was cold on top, but we only stayed long enough to take some pics and eat a granola bar, so I didn't ever put a jacket on. The glacier was about dried up, which I had never seen before, but the views were great.  The trail going down is rough, so it wasn't a lot faster going down at first. After about 12 miles the legs were hammered!  But we took it easy and were careful and made it down with only one casualty, Greg's shoe that ripped out the toes.  We made it down and and finished just as it was hitting the high 80s.  3:19:32 for the 15 miles, fastest mile up was 11:20 and down was 8:14.  4500 feet plus going up and down in elevation change.  I will probably pay for this run for a couple of days, but we kicked the crap out of it at the same time.  I was really surprised we made it to the summit in under 2 hours!  Great run!

I was smarter on this run than past hard trail runs, i.e. Grand Canyon rim to rim in 2004 where I almost died with less than 1 mile to go.  I ate some granola and cliff bars, gatorade chews, and drank about 90oz of water.  Felt good today, other than the pain!:)

Ran my Butterfield Canyon 20 mile course with Tim McKissick.  He is shooting for a sub 3:20 St. George and I needed slow because of the busy week and dead legs.  Wore my sleeves for this one, which was alright.  I have never worn sleeves on a run before, just after, a little hot but not bad.  Tim was hurting, but ran really goo.  I talked his ear off.  Saw the tail end of my kids and ran into T Bean as he was finishing his run.  2:45.37 for the 20 miles.  Good to get a 20 under my belt and the legs felt better.

The run was quick, but all steep downhill and I was holding back to their pace for most of it.  It will still beat me up I am afraid, but I needed a bit more downhill.  the canyon was beautiful with the changing leaves and the snow.  Good run.

I wasthe first guy on the list to miss getting to plant drinks, so I was out on the course doing it last night.  It was chilly this morning, one of the colder St. Georges I remember.  Got on the bus about 5:00am.  When I got to the start I put on a space blaket and hunkered down with Dave, Logan, and Clyde until we had to start moving.  Greg found me at the start.  It was pretty cold at the stat and I wore sleeves and gloves and never took them off the entire race.  This one ended up being a tough one.  I think it was a little cold for me, and the last of miles and speed or racing because of the hamstringseemed to play a role too.

I seemed to get into rhythms at times, but reall fell off twice for a couple of miles.  I pretty much ran the same as I did at Utah Valley without cramping.  A lot of people seemed to have a good day, but for me it was a tough day.  My splits were a little off,my watch wasn't quite on the mile markers, it seemed to record about 20 seconds before.  My first mile was actually 6:12 and I was 37:00 through 10k, but this is close enogh to post.  Ended up mostly running by myself the entire race after 10k.  2:42:26 was the final time.  Clyde and Dave were in the chute waiting like usual, so I waited for some people with them for a while.  I was dissapointed that I couldn't run as fast as last year.  My half was 20 seconds faster last year, but the total run was 2:25 slower than last year.  Ended up 6th in the age, so I did plaque.  The marathon was done well like usual.  the 10 year dinner was great.  The weekend was nice.  A lot of my friends ran very well, so congrats to them.

Jogged around this morning while my kids were doing speedwork.  Legs are fine.  I was the least sore I have ever been.  Not sure if it was the downhill stuff that I already got sore from, or that I wore compression socks all day on Saturday and Sunday, and rolled out on Saturday, or the fact that I didn't run that fast, but I wasn't way sore on Sunday either.  I could have run Monday.   The calves were tighter last night thatn the previous two days.  The left hammy is tight on both tendons now, but running felt fine.  I will still take most of the week off.
