New marathon, similar result. I had the worst migraine of my life Friday night, safe to say my sleep was terrible. Even on the bus ride up the canyon my right temple was still aching but eventually went away. I started out strong and did my best to survive the early uphills (almost broke my back). Then I just cruised down the rest of the crazy downhills. Around mile 11 or 12 I noticed my right foot back towards the heel was giving me discomfort. I thought I had a rock in my shoe. So right around mile 13 I stopped to get the rock out. There was no rock. I stopped again about a quarter mile later (at the steepest drop of the whole race)  to investigate. A huge blister was forming. It was squishy and uncomfortable but I knew that wasn’t going to stop me. I know I heel strike a lot but I believe the blister was formed because I wear my shoes really loose. My left ankle always swells on long runs because of a preexisting injury so I’m accustomed to just wearing my shoes loose.

To prevent quad cramps I over prepared for this race. I wore an ultraspire pack for the first 22 miles to make sure I had more hydration and “anti cramping materials”. I garffed down probably like 3 bananas hoping that potassium would save my legs. By mile 23 none of that mattered. I was already slowing significantly by mile 20, but I thought I would mentally just take it mile by mile. See if I could find something towards the end. My quads started to cramp. My calves would give me shots of pain as if they wanted to cramp up too. I just hobbled in for the last 3 miles. Ross caught up with me around mile 24. I tried to run with him but had nothing to give.

I’m bummed I keep facing similar problems. The blister was a new issue for me. I’m thankful my running crew of supporters. Shout out to Kaelynn for house accommodations. She also crushed it in the half marathon! Time to lose weight (for real this time) and plan the next adventure.
