| | Weight lifting during the Jazz game. Showed Dennis how to do squats with Dumbells. 3 x 30 squats with 90 lb. 3 x 15 deep pushups 3 x 10 Curls. Pretty light workout. I work out harder when the Jazz lose. Ruth liked my strawberry salad so I was flattered; Spinach leaves, sliced strawberries, slivered almonds, sesame seeds. Dressing: olive oil, vinegar, agave cactus sweetener, strawberry-kiwi Kool-aide mix. | | Comments(1) |
| | AM glucose: 150 10 mile run. 2:40
My 10 mile runs are quite leisurely. I run with Sage through
some nice trails. I saw a dozen or so runners – more than usual since it was a little warmer this morning.
I start at my house in Highland and after about 2 miles I
get to the running trail which takes me along American Fork Creek through
Adventure and Learning Park, past the Alpine Country Club and Cedar Hills golf
course. At the mouth of American Fork Canyon I turn south to the summit of
Cedar Hills, then a long descent through "downtown" Cedar Hills, to Lone Peak High School, through Adventure
and Learning Park again and back home. When I get more comfortable with this run, I'll try running up the canyon to the Timpanogos cave visitor center and back, which will add 4 miles to the run. I'll start that in June or July, to get ready for the Provo River 1/2.

| | Glucose AM:210 3 Hours Hiking: A lot warmer in Grove Creek canyon than last week. Tried making some "Super Cookies" with quinoa flakes and agave (instead of sugar) Quinoa is a high protein substitute for wheat flour. http://magazine.byu.edu/print.php?a=2182 They tasted okay -- but probably not worth the effort. Just get used to not eating cookies, I tell myself. I made a spinach salad with egg and fetta cheese. It was good, but again seemed like too much effort. I like to just eat, be done and forget about it. I'm going back to the simple protein and vegetable diet that I did in April. No workout during the Jazz game -- too worn out from yardwork on Saturday.

Glucose: AM:150, PM:120
7 x 220 sprints: 50, 55, 59, 56,53,58,49 Slow times because of Ankle pain. I'm going to take Daniel suggestion and try to do more consistent training. I've not wanted to run too much due to history of back and hip problems but I'm going to add a 3 mile run this week and see how it feels. If 4 running days a week feels okay, then I'll add a fifth day later. | | Add Comment |

Run for the Cure (3.1 Miles) 00:35:50 | | Glucose AM: 96
Lauri paced me well and I ran pretty well, but was somewhat disappointed in the time. (We were hoping to break 34 minutes). I would say the two main factors for the slow time were 1) the huge crowd. It was really hard to find much running space. 2) My training track is a bit shorter than a 5K so I had overly high expectations. Anyway, it's still a PR for a 5K. I'll try a little different strategy for the next 5k (may 17 running with angels at Thanksgiving point) I've got a lot of work to do to get under 30 minutes. Couldn't complain about the finish line free food and give-away booths. Very fun finishing at the Gateway.

Running with Angels (3.1 Miles) 00:35:20
Glucose AM:125 PM 101 Running with Angels, my new favorite 5K. Half the run was through the Thanksgiving Point Gardens. Though the tulips were no longer in bloom, it is still a great place to see a diversity of trees and plants with new spring growth. The race used the little "scrunchie rings" for timer devices -- the kind Christina likes to cut open with scissors. I haven't found the results on-line yet. The music was to my liking -- 70s oldies such as Sweet Home Alabama, YMCA. It was just a really upbeat feeling -- you know the Utah County afterglow. I cut 30 seconds off my previous best inspite of recovering from a cold and the hilly course. Time 35:20 1st: 10:30, 2nd: 11:30 3rd: 12:10 I took 3 days rest before this race, mostly because I was sick. My legs sure felt rested after that time. Regarding blood sugar, I was surprised that in spite of a low calorie diet and maximum medication my glucose hovered around 200 (too high) during those 3 days. Which means that to keep glucose low, exercise is mandatory. I just can't take days off.

2.9 Miles with Ben 36:05 It was a tough run today. Must have done too much [as opposed to the right amount of] binging last night.
Smeagol is undergoing physical therapy for tendonites. Smeagol and his wife are going to run in the DesNews 10K as are Ben and his 9-year old son. Ben's son can do a 7 minute mile. Jeez.

| | Pleasant 4.5 mile evening run around my neighborhood. Nice change of pace from the usual 3 mile lunchtime run around Lake Park. I have very few allergies so I love sweet springtime fragrances. Buggered my shoulder playing kickball with the scouts. I hope it gets better quick. | | Comments(7) |

Bridal Veil 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:01:16
Pretty nice race: Well, what race in any canyon along the Wasatch is not nice? On the negative side: 1st half is uphill, upwind and into the sun. 9AM seems like a late start time. My mile times were approximately: 12:30, 12:30, 13, 12, 12:30, 12:30. Race time I clocked was 1:16 Results are supposed to be online somewhere later on. I'm happy with the time. It's a PR for a 10K (I had a 1:14 in cedar city last year but there was a clock malfunction) It's not a fast course and I was battling a sore hip. I was a little disappointed that my downhill time was not much faster it was only slighty faster than the uphill time. I just didn't have the strength. Maddening. I saw Sasha there and was going to thank him for this cool blog site but after I picked up my T-shirt he was gone and I couldn't find him. Oh well.
