Welcome to the blog! You know who has similar goals to you--KellyP.fastrunningblog.com.

That is so cool that you want to do a half marathon this year. I just barely ran my first half and it was an amazing experience. Good luck with your training!

From Laurie on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 09:26:00

I want to get my 5k time under 30 min. also. I did it, once a few years ago but the closest I've been since is 34.

Good job on you running and keep it up and I'll see if I can keep up with you.

From Paula on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 09:35:56

Welcome to the blog! Hopefully I will see you at some of the runs this year. You will need to let us know what runs you are doing.

From Hildisvini on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 10:25:51

Thanks for the encouragement, all.

I am registered to run the Bridal Veil 10K on May 31, the Riverwoods 10 mile on June 14 and the Provo River Half on Aug 09.

I will also run the DesNews 10K on July 24 with some work buddies and I'm considering the Running with Angels 5k at Thanksgiving point on May 17.

My routine for the last 2 months has been a 3 mile run with work buddies on Tuesday, speedwork on Thursday and a 10 mile run on Saturday morning. I do weight lifting whenever the Jazz play, mostly upper body, but some squats and sit-ups too.

I am open to critique and suggestions.

From Daniel on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 15:26:27

Welcome to the blog. Are you only running 3 days a week? You would benefit more with more consistent training.

From Hildisvini on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 15:36:39

Yes Daniel, just 3 days a week. And thanks for the Welcome.

I'm going to try to add a 3 hour hike to my weekly routine. But as is, my legs are sore all the time, so I'm not sure whether to add any more running or how much if I do.

Oh yeah, I also walk 3 miles about 3 times a week (fast walking with the doggies) Does that count?

Advise welcome.

From Tracy1 on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 17:01:25

How did you get the name idea?? Or is that a famous painters name???

I've heard that you are doing some great training! Good job!

From Daniel on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 18:41:13

I would suggest you run about 2-3 miles a day consistently (6 days a week) and go for a long run of around 4-5 on Saturday if you want. My guess is that your legs are sore most of the week because of the shock of a 10 mile run on Saturdays. By running a few miles everyday, your current mileage will be about the same, and it should be easier on your legs.

From Kelly on Fri, May 02, 2008 at 19:37:16

Welcome to the blog!

Looks like you are well on your way to achieving some fine goals. Already running 10K is a great thing. I am slowly working my way to that distance so I will be watching your progress closely.

From Christina on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 00:48:34

Hey---you are on the blog!! Now you are fully invested in the running community!! A lot of us will be watching you.....keep up the good work!

From Hildisvini on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 11:56:38

Well, Christina, it was your idea for me to try this so I hope you check in once in a while! I'll be watching your blog too and gleaning ideas from your experience and tidbits of wisdom trickled down from Coach Bill.

From Hildisvini on Sat, May 03, 2008 at 12:14:55

In Norse mythology, Hildisvíni (“battle swine”) was Freyja's war boar which she rode when not using her cat-drawn chariot.

Friday is name after the goddess, Freyja similar to how Thursday is named after Thor.

I picked "Hildisvini" simply because the thought of riding a swine into battle makes me chuckle.

Weight lifting during the Jazz game.

Showed  Dennis how to do squats with Dumbells.

3 x 30 squats with 90 lb.

3 x 15 deep pushups

3 x 10 Curls.

Pretty light workout. I work out harder when the Jazz lose. Ruth liked my strawberry salad so I was flattered; Spinach  leaves,  sliced strawberries,  slivered almonds, sesame seeds. Dressing: olive oil, vinegar, agave cactus sweetener,  strawberry-kiwi Kool-aide mix.

That salad sounds pretty good. I'll bet you'll become quite the salad-making pro! I was a meat-eater at Caleb's graduation. We went to Braza Grill and I indulged on the beef sirloin.

10 mile run. 2:40

My 10 mile runs are quite leisurely. I run with Sage through some nice trails. I saw a dozen or so runners – more than usual since it was a little warmer this morning.

I start at my house in Highland and after about 2 miles I get to the running trail which takes me along American Fork Creek through Adventure and Learning Park, past the Alpine Country Club and Cedar Hills golf course. At the mouth of American Fork Canyon I turn south to the summit of Cedar Hills, then a long descent through "downtown" Cedar Hills, to Lone Peak High School, through Adventure and Learning Park again and back home.

When I get more comfortable with this run, I'll try running up the canyon to the Timpanogos cave visitor center and back, which will add 4 miles to the run. I'll start that in June or July, to get ready for the Provo River 1/2.

3 Hours Hiking: A lot warmer in Grove Creek canyon than last week.

Tried making some "Super Cookies" with quinoa flakes and agave (instead of sugar) Quinoa is a high protein substitute for wheat flour. http://magazine.byu.edu/print.php?a=2182

They tasted okay -- but probably not worth the effort. Just get used to not eating cookies, I tell myself.

I made a spinach salad with egg and fetta cheese. It was good, but again seemed like too much effort. I like to just eat, be done and forget about it. I'm going back to the simple protein and vegetable diet that I did in April.

No workout during the Jazz game -- too worn out from yardwork on Saturday.

Welcome to the blog! Are you prediabetic?

From Christina on Mon, May 05, 2008 at 14:36:03

So, the protein cookies didn't turn out too good, eh? I guess the only good cookies are the real thing, huh! Did you eat them during Magic?

From Hildisvini on Mon, May 05, 2008 at 15:25:35

Thanks for the welcome, Michelle. I have type II Diabetes. My sugar level overall has been pretty good lately, just a little high the last few days.

Yeah, my usual philosophy is either eat the good food or don't i.e. don't try to eat a "diet" substitute. But occasionally it's fun to experiment. Now my "experiment" is done.

I spilled most of the cookies on my way to give them to Ruth's family -- so the dogs got most of them. I had about 4. I brought a big bowl of veggies to Magic "Game Night" but I ate a lot of meatloaf, so that's probably why the glucose and weight were up this morning.

If you want to type in wasatchford in the coupon area on active and Larry H Miller will pay half your registration so it will only be 12.50 for you!! Come run with me, I just did a 34:40 3 mile run this morning I think we could pace well together!

From Hildisvini on Thu, May 08, 2008 at 10:29:11

Lauri paced me well and I ran pretty well, but was somewhat disappointed in the time. (We were hoping to break  34 minutes). I would say the two main factors for the slow time were 1) the huge crowd. It was really hard to find much running space. 2) My training track is a bit shorter than a 5K so I  had overly high expectations.

Anyway, it's still a PR for a 5K. I'll try a little different strategy for the next 5k (may 17 running with angels at Thanksgiving point) I've got a lot of work to do to get under 30 minutes.

Couldn't complain about the finish line free food and give-away booths. Very fun finishing at the Gateway.

Congratulations on a 5K PR! The crowds at the start and the uphill stretch on the backside make it kind of tough to get a good time, but it's kind of fun nonetheless. I ran with my eleven year old daughter and we finished just a couple of minutes behind you.

Glucose AM:125 PM 101

Running with Angels, my new favorite 5K. Half the run was through the Thanksgiving Point Gardens. Though the tulips were no longer in bloom, it is still a great place to see a diversity of trees and plants with new spring growth.

The race used the little "scrunchie rings" for timer devices -- the kind Christina likes to cut open with scissors. I haven't found the results on-line yet. The music was to my liking -- 70s oldies such as Sweet Home Alabama, YMCA.

It was just a really upbeat feeling -- you know the Utah County afterglow.

I cut 30 seconds off my previous best inspite of recovering from a cold and the hilly course.

Time 35:20 1st: 10:30, 2nd: 11:30 3rd: 12:10

I took 3 days rest before this race, mostly because I was sick. My legs sure felt rested after that time. Regarding blood sugar, I was surprised that in spite of a low calorie diet and maximum medication my glucose hovered around 200 (too high) during those 3 days. Which means that to keep glucose low, exercise is mandatory. I just can't take days off.

I ran this race Saturday and found it to be a very happy and enjoyable race also! I would never want to try to get a PR on that course though. I think it needs to be more for great times than for great clock times! I wish all the bloggers could have found each other and said "Hey". Anyway, good job on the race and enjoying the upbeat feeling.

From Kelly on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:53:25

Congratulations on a strong time in the 5K and improving your PR on a tough course. Looks like you are right on track to get that 1:12 goal for the 10K at Bridal Veil. I'll be watching for that race report as well.

Sounds like a diet you could lose a lot of weight on. I tend to put sausage in cabbage soup which probably defeats the purpose.

From Hildisvini on Sat, May 24, 2008 at 23:47:41

10 miles is the longest I've ever "run" though I must point out that I've not yet run the whole thing. I have to to walk part of it.

Thanks for your encouragement Christina and Tracy. Sometimes I really wonder why I do this. I don't think I was born with running genes.

From Tracy1 on Sun, May 25, 2008 at 22:19:00

Hey, you are doing the distance right? What percentage of runners are born with running genes anyway??

When you wonder why you are doing it, think about how great it is for your heart, health, lungs, longer life span, lower's your chance of getting cancer,....the list goes on and on!! Just be careful out there in the traffic!

From hildisvini on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 18:32:58

Hard to argue with those reasons you list, Tracy. How 'bout this: Runners might live longer but wish they hadn't.

Nice run! That's a really good distance for a midweek run! Did you like the cooler weather in the evening?

From Hildisvini on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 12:31:22

Cool weather was great. Last night I was enjoying a cool canyon breeze as well. The run felt good so I just kept going. I'll be exercising lightly for the rest of the week to store up for the bridal veil 10K.

Nice to see you blogging again!

From Laurie on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 12:37:03

Marie, Tracy, Bill and I are doing the Summer Games (June 13th and 14th). You are welcome to come down--although I know you have a race in Provo on the 14th. Most of the running group is doing the Heart of Holladay 5k that day.

From Hildisvini on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 20:57:18

I am learning that there are certain races which are more popular than others. Seems no one wants to do much uphill racing like the bridal veil. Or is it fear of entering my happy valley?

I loved that Summer Games course. Maybe I'll try it again next year.

Race: Bridal Veil 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:01:16

Pretty nice race: Well, what race in any canyon along the Wasatch is not nice?

On the negative side: 1st half is uphill, upwind and into the sun. 9AM seems like a late start time. My mile times were approximately:

12:30, 12:30, 13, 12, 12:30, 12:30. Race time I clocked was 1:16

Results are supposed to be online somewhere later on.

I'm happy with the time. It's a PR for a 10K (I had a 1:14 in cedar city last year but there was a clock malfunction) It's not a fast course and I was battling a sore hip.

I was a little disappointed that my downhill time was not much faster it was only slighty faster than the uphill time. I just didn't have the strength. Maddening.

I saw Sasha there and was going to thank him for this cool blog site but after I picked up my T-shirt he was gone and I couldn't find him. Oh well.

From Lybi on Sat, May 31, 2008 at 17:11:47

Great job, Hildisvini! A PR is always nice. You seem to have a very positive attitude--I don't care how pretty the scenery is, if it is uphill and into the wind and the sun for very long, I am pretty sure I wouldn't be talking about what a great course it was. He he. Keep up the great work and good luck with your hip!

From Laurie on Sun, Jun 01, 2008 at 10:02:02

Not what you were planning but those are really consistent times. That's great! And you can't complain if it is a PR. Just imagine what you could do on a "fast" course!

Hiking, I think that is what I have been doing this week, but I still called in my running. good enough for me.

Good job on the workouts, keep 'em up.

Had to arise at 4 am to meet the carpool going up to run Brighton Loops. I thought it was pretty nutty -- all that work just to train at 9000 feet. But what do I know? I'm just a neophyte. The runamok group has been doing this for a while.

The snow storm was great! Pretty as a postcard. I saw a lot of  Christina's friends that she always talks about: Andrea, Craig, Coach Bill, and ... Alicia? -- the one who has all the BYU energy..And of course, T1 and T2.

They ran about 9-10 loops while I ran 6. Each loop was 3/4 mile. It was actually pretty fun and a nice change from the usual 10 mile, slow pace run that I do on Saturdays.

6x0.75 miles

When runners passed me they said, "Looking Good!". And coach Bill said, "Someday you will be as sick as the rest of us!". So these are very friendly and motivating People. I can see why Christina loves running with them so much.

Yeah, good run! How are ya feeling? Have an awesome 10 miler this weekend! We'll be thinking about ya and reminiscing about last years games!!!

Race: river woods 10 mile (10 Miles) 00:02:06

Great route. It's more pleasant running the whole thing down hill (as opposed to half up-hill on the 10K two weeks ago). The first 3 miles or so had a perfect downhill grade. I pretty much coasted. At that point I decided to go for my best time on the first 10K portion of the race.

At about mile 5, I started feeling tired but pushed for a  good 10K time of 1:14. (PR) Then my times really dropped off -- from about 12 minute miles to 13 minute miles. Mile 8 and 9 were pretty tough. Mile 10 was faster since I was just thinking about finishing as quick as possible to get it over with.

I can't over-state how fun it was  and how great I felt for the rest of the day. My first 10 mile run and a good preview of how my 1/2 marathon will be in August. I just need to keep running long races on Saturday to build up my stamina. Plus drop as many lbs. as possible.

I'm pretty stiff and sore but not injured (thank goodness)

Good job on getting in your first 10 miles run. And bettering your 10k time. Just keep it up and be consistant through the summer and I think you will amaze yourself in the half. Keep on training. Make sure you get out tomorrow it will help work the stiffness out of your leg, even if it is at a crawling pace.

I think you are so going to beat your goal on the half. For me I'll just see if I can match your half time. Sound like a deal?

From Hildisvini on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 10:28:28

Thanks for the encouragement and rosy predictions josse, and Laurie. Tracy, that's a true observation.

At this point, all the "regular" people in my life seem pretty skeptical, or apathetic about the prospects of me running a half marathon, let alone a marathon next year -- but not "irregular" people (runners); they get giddy at the mere mention of the word "run".

Laurie, I think Christina and one of her friends are running the freedom run in centerville on July 4 www.centervilleut.net/UpDownload+index-req-getit-lid-498.html

Smeagol and I will run it too. You and Crashman should join us. I'm still trying to beat the 34 minute mark in a 5K.

Weight change since May 1: -6

2 miles of gentle pickups 11:55, 12:30

I'm going to try more of these gentle pickups as a way to boost my speed. The 200 yard repeats are just a little too jarring on my frame and  I often get joint (hip, knee and ankle) pain for days afterward.

These gentile pickups are convenient because I can do them anytime close to my house and not have to go to a track. I hope it works. I think if I can get that 1 mile time well under 11 minutes, then I should be able to reach all of my goals this year.

Wow, look at the weight change! You're going to beat me at that too arent you?

I increase my mile speed on purpose. It is to help train you to not start too fast at races and to finish strong. I think in the most recent runners world they talk about it. And it is something I learned from Chris. Makes sense to me and if I start and a decent pace I loosen up and feel good and the faster miles really aren't that much more difficult.

From Christina on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 14:51:38

Congrats! Another 3 lbs. The family will all be jealous!

2.9 miles 35:20, plenty of heat today - 97. Smeagol didn't beat me to the finish this time, but he is doing the ultimate 10K training plan and is quite depleted of energy.

R & R with boy scouts at Maple Dell. A bit of hiking helped my leg soreness go away plus I got some good napping.

1 mile of gentile pickups. I did about 6 GPs and got a time of 10:55. I think that is the first time I've broken an 11 minute mile! It took too long to reach this milestone. My first sub 10 minute mile will  come sooner.

I'm started to realize you are quite the hiker. I am not so much so. Maybe because I have to backpack little ones if I do.

From Hildisvini on Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 15:36:56

It's true. I really prefer hiking over any other form of exercise (racquetball is 2nd) Running is my 10th favorite exercise (used to be 45th favorite)

It would be fun someday to try competitive trail running.

My friend Paul backpacked his 18 month old to timpanogos basin (about 5 miles up) I think that is nutty -- just get a babysitter, I say.

2.9 miles with Smeagol. I struggled mightily today mostly because of a stiff left calf. I didn't notice it until I started picking up the pace. It caused me to stop and stretch a lot and walk part of the course. I must have strained it during the hike yesterday. I consentrated on running in such a way that that calf got stretched on each step -- seemed to help.

I hope it get better quick. I spent a little extra time stretching after the run.

3 miles walking, calf feels okay.

1 mile gentle pickups; calf feels better 11:15

From Laurie on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 11:04:58

what is a hoppity hop?

From Christina on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 15:27:37

Sounds like an enjoyable workout! I think a hoppity hop is a rubber ball with a handle on it that you sit on and hop around. Am I right?

From Hildisvini on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 17:58:04

Christina is right. This is just a tongue-in-cheek blog entry. But it's fun to race on them -- impossible to be sad.

I'm actually saving up energy for tomorrow when I will attempt (may the force be with me) a 14 mile run.

I'm going to run from my house to the Timpanogos Cave Visitor's center and back. Wish me luck!

From Tracy1 on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 22:07:51

Good luck!! Sounds like a beautiful run!

I tried to run 14 miles but ran into a couple of problems.

1) American Fork canyon is just not good for running: not enough shoulder and too many fast cars and bicycles. After getting about 1 mile away from the visitor center (6 miles away from home) I dodged a fast bicycle and decided it was enough and turned around.

 2) My left calf stiffened up and my right hip started causing me a lot of pain. So I had to walk (actually limp) the last 3 miles home. It's a little discouraging wondering how I'm ever going to finish the half marathon, let alone a full marathon next year.

The calf should heal up with more time, but the hip has bothered me for years so I don't know how it's ever going to get better.

I'll just keep running and hope for the best. I know everyone else struggles with pains now and then.

Good job! I think I am -6 for the month. It probably could have been more, but I had a few cheat days that got me off track!

From Hildisvini on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 14:52:20

Exactly. I'm trying to think how I can avoid cheat days in July. For example One of my scout's mom made me a fresh loaf of bread. It was SO good. I couldn't stop eating it. Then I made the mistake of telling her how good it was so now she is going to make more for me!

It's a cruel food world we live in. You have to either avoid people or be rude to them when they offer food.

From Laurie on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 09:41:15

I take the food and offer it to Chris or the kids, or sometimes continue to pass it along to someone else..........to give is better than to receive;)

2.9 sizzling (I don't mean fast) miles at Lake Park during the lunch hour 35 minutes. Smeagol didn't do himself any favors by running inside on the treadmill.

I closed my eyes on the treadmill and believed I was outside. It actually worked but instead of being sizzled I felt nice and cool. I heard that you make a mean cabbage soup. You'll have to tell me about it. Yumm... cabbage.

5k race at Centerville. I ran with Christina and Cami. Tracy1 was there with Renae (does she blog?) Saw Smeagol with his brothers and Lauri with Krash Man. It was lots of fun -- didn't race seriously. Did it in about 36 minutes.

Well, about time you blogged some miles :) Nice to see at the race again. Sasha suggests running Draper days and Minuteman 5k. I'm not so interested in Draper but I would like to do Minuteman (there will be an apache helicopter there-now talk about coolness factor) Are you interested in running it?

From Hildisvini on Mon, Jul 07, 2008 at 13:28:03

Sounds good. It's on the same day as my home town race (Highland Fling)... but if it's recommended by Sasha, I will give it due consideration. Probably I'll try it out -- not 100% committed but thanks for pointing it out.

Since that is so close to the 1/2 race, Are you planning on doing more running on Aug 2 than just the 5K? These 5Ks are so fun but I feel like I'm cheating myself of training for the bigger races. What do you think?

Gosh I'm still thinking about your great race time in Centerville. How am I going to catch up to your progress?! It will probably have to come in the form of some sort of cross training since I'm just not sure this body can take a lot more miles per week. Or maybe I'm just being wimpy. I don't know.

From Laurie on Mon, Jul 07, 2008 at 14:05:01

I am not running the half until the Aug 23rd, but I would probably add some miles. I would do at least one before the race (believe it or not it really helps) and some ssssslllllllooooooowwwwwww miles later.

I am not particular about that specific race, it's just the 5k I want to try again. Do you know where I can find info on the Highland fling?

From hildisvini on Mon, Jul 07, 2008 at 16:08:04

Here is the link on the Highland Fling: http://www.highlandcity.org/images/applications/flingschedule.pdf

But after thinking about it, my vote would be the Minute Man 5K since I like trying new races and Sasha recommends it, so probably more bloggers there.

Dang, I'm trying to think up a better plan to catch up to your fitness level!

From hildisvini on Mon, Jul 07, 2008 at 16:11:05

Here is another link with a link to registration:

http://www.highlandcity.org/cgi-bin/hc/highlandfling.html

From Hildisvini on Tue, Jul 08, 2008 at 12:52:19

Well the Minuteman will cost $30, since we're already late in registering and the Highland Fling costs $10 (before July 24) and comes with a T-shirt. Hmmm. Maybe it's not not worth an extra $20 plus gas $$ to go to the minuteman race.

Still thinking about it.

From Laurie on Tue, Jul 08, 2008 at 14:52:15

Minuteman comes with a tech t-shirt I don't have a lot of those(which I would most definitly use) and has an apache helicopter, plus a big ol' breakfast......

I'm still thinking too.........it's over 35 miles from my house to highland, but draper is still a distance too......

From Hildisvini on Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 19:55:49

yeah, thanks for the encouragement. I didn't want to weight myself today but it's safe to say my improvement has not been dramatic. I've decided to run the Highland 5K on Aug 2, so maybe we can find another race to compare our times. Are you running the desnews 10K? I'll be there. Chocolate chip cookies are dieters's death.

9 miles hiking in Zion narrows with Smeagol and two other guys. Amazing!

The shuttle wasn't running that day due to heavy rain the night before, so we left Smeagol's vehicle back at Springdale and the four of us drove to the top of the Narrows in my Toyota Corolla.

Had to take a few test runs to get through heavy mud. Needed to be careful not to drive off some slippery mud cliffs. Passed some stuck 4-wheel drive vehicles. Had to unplug some German tourists from the road so we could pass. They offered us beer for our efforts but we declined -- it would seem incongruous to imbibe after being spared so many potential mis-haps by powers unknown, just before descending into one of the Almighty's finest galleries.

The next day, the shuttle also refused to take tourists up, so we had the whole canyon to ourselves. Spectacular! Didn't see any rain but heard there were flash-flood warnings after the fact.

7 Miles Hiking in Zion Narrows. 2 straight days of this made me plenty sore and walking like a duck. We were in water 35% of the time. Since it was so muddy, we couldn't see the rocks and had to carefully pick our way using hiking poles as blind sensing sticks. Very slow progress in some places and mentally fatiguing to negotiate the water falls, mud pudding, log bogs and other obstacles. Good cross training and lots of fun, but not recommended the accident prone.

Got home at 2 am from the Narrows.

upper body and abs workout plus 2 miles running on the treadmill just to try to work out the soreness from hiking. Legs feel great. Maybe I'll still do that 18 mile hike on Friday night.

From Christina on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 20:31:13

Great job on the hike and the weight loss! If you do go get a chubby melt, you'll have to tell me all about how it tastes! I told Coach about it, and he just gasped!

From Smeagol on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:17:31

Great job on the hike. That's a lot of miles you've put in this week. Good luck on the 10K and don't let any little kids pass you.

From Hildisvini on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 18:07:39

Thanks Tracy. It is a way to avoid the sun, but at this point, I'm not sure it was worth it. The sunrise was cool though.

Christina, You will have to come with me and Smeagol after the 1/2 and sample it. Take a sample for coach too! I doubt we could adequately put into words the taste of a sandwich like that.

Smeagol, what do little kids like? We can toss out some candies and $1 toys in their path to distract and slow them down. We can't get beat by anyone under 10! Please!

From laurie on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 18:13:29

OMG!!! Have you guys seen the mile times that Sashas kids do? If they ran a race that distance they would could our trash and there would be nothing we could do about it. (These kids have never had to deal with extra weight:)

My nephew was like that too, and he ran just to pass the adults and did it for the thrill of beating us, so I don't think the candy would work either. Just keep an eye out on people around and I bet you'll be surprised how many apparently thin, toned, young adults you pass who have no training and no endurance. And have FUN!! I'm so excited.

From Hildisvini on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 14:29:49

11 minute miles, eh? With a 32 minute 5k on a circular route, I would think 1:08 10k on a downhill route should be within your reach. I am rooting for you. It's going to be a fun one regardless.

I've never held that pace for 6.2 miles but who knows? Maybe it will be my day.

From laurie on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 15:27:50

According to Sashas calculator I should be able to finish just under 1:07. That would be nice. But I am afraid to step on the scale......I'm thinking I should start forking out the bucks and do weight watchers and have someone to be accountable to.

Race: Deseret News 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:01:09

DeseretNews 10K.

Time: 1:09, just over 11 minutes per mile. I'm really happy with that time, even though I didn't achieve my 10K goal. It is about a 10 minute improvement over last year. Yeah! So in an attempt to avoid complacency I will say that cutting 10 more minutes off for next year should be easily within reach.

I ran with 3 friends from work: Ben, Smeagol and Steve. They all liked the race and seemed to be looking forward to running it again next year. I saw Christina and a couple of her running friends Jodi and Char (sp?) They also seemed happy with their times.

DesNews 10K is a great race. Good treats at the end and so fun to watch the Marathoners come in. Running conditions were much better than last year (less humidity).

Thats a great improvement! Good job! I'm really glad the weather was better this year! You didn't even need the first aid tent! Just kidding!

From Hildisvini on Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 15:30:37

I didn't need the first aid tent but I must have appeared near death as medical people kept trying to give me assistance. "No. I don't need oxygen. No. I don't need a stretcher. No I don't need fluids". Nobutseriously, a race official actually asked me if I needed a medic. I was limping pretty hard, but I have since mostly recovered. [HAPPY ENDING]

You are Timp master. Man are you stiff from the race. Yesterday it hit me hard. Today, not as much. We've got to hit the mileage hard next week to get ready for Provo.

What's up with Stride Racing not posting the chip times? I've emailed them and the Bob Wood. That is so irritating. No chubby melt for them.

I was pretty stiff. Can you believe I'm going to hike Timp at least one more time? Probably Wednesday. I love it for burning fat. And it doesn't kill my joints.

Then I'm going to run my local 5k on Saturday plus 6-9 more miles (I hope) and 2 or 3 5k runs before the Provo 1/2. Then I'm going to step back and reevaluate what my prep plan will be for a marathon next year.

What's your plan before and after the Provo 1/2?

From Smeagol on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 00:06:04

Call me next time you hike Timp. I want to do it once this year.

Yeah, I saw that listing of times but that is the gun time listed there. I don't know where you started but Ben was mentioning that it took him 5 minutes to get to the starting gate. So that time is way skewed. Last year they posted both times. Maybe they'll fix it this year if enough people complain.

Let's try running sidewards on the Tuesday run to see if it helps cut down on the wind resistance. Perhaps it will improve our times.

You've got Jensen in your sites for next year. Unless he actually does run those 6 min miles. Then we are all in trouble.

From Smeagol on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 00:22:14

The Stride Running company just said there was a malfunction with the starting mat. Check it out:

From Hildisvini on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 13:26:01

You have been so very consistent with your training! I'm so impressed! Oh, I was wondering....Is it possible to lay a "chubby melt" respectfully on the pavement for the seagulls, like fries? That just doesn't sound right... Hee hee!

From HIldisvini on Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 13:57:15

"Hark! Brother Hildisvini, a pestilence of fries has arrived." "Then pray for flocks of gulls to save us, Sister Pope". "But wait, a plague of Chubby Melts has also seized upon us, Brother Hildisvini." "Goodness, it might be too much for even the gulls to overcome, Sister Tracy."

Smeagol and I will learn more about the Chubby Melt after the Provo 1/2. You are welcome to join us if you dare. But I'm not sure exactly what day we are going. I plan to divide and conquer (limit myself to 1/4 chubby melt per 6 hour period)

That's the 4th time I've hiked it this year. Jeez!  I took Sage again. This time, she seemed a little warn out at the end. I think the heat got to her. I saw a couple of trail-runners going up hill. Totally nuts! Hope I'm that nuts some day.

Upper Body Workout. I tried a few different exercises that were in the Body For Life book like the bench-dips. I have heard that Coach Bill doesn't like step-lunges nor ham-string curls. So I avoid them but what about the ham-string exercise where you lean forward with dumbbells, then pull back, keeping your back straight. Is that one ok? Or in other words, what Hamstring exercise, if any, is recommended?

Comments
From Christina on Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 19:10:00

Yes, I would say that hamstring exercise is Coach Bill-approved. I meet with my Nazi trainer tomorrow, and I gave him specific instructions of the exercises I cannot do.

Nice job on your fourth Timp hike! I know it is so pretty up there. Too bad Sage is getting tired of it!

Race: Highland Fling 5k (3.1 Miles) 00:34:50

Nice little square, flat run. I think I PRed by a few seconds. It was fun to run with a bunch of neighbors and family.

I did something I don't normally do. I ran about 1 1/2 miles to the start to get warmed up. But I can't tell if it made any difference. I had planned to run another few miles afterward. But no, my body said "NO!"

Way to warm up before the race! It seems to loosen me up a little bit when I do that. That's cool they gave out tech shirts this year. Are you getting excited for the Provo Half? I unfortunately am working that day, so I want to hang around to see people finish, but I'll see how tired I'm feeling!

From Hildisvini on Sat, Aug 02, 2008 at 18:22:57

Yeah, you probably won't be able to hang long enough to see me finish. I'm pretty worried about the Provo 1/2. Every race I've done this year seems to make my hip a little sorer. So I'm not even sure I can finish that race.

But darn it, I'll try. I was hoping for some strong pain killer from the Oral Surgeon last week, which would have helped me at Provo (just kidding) but he was too stingy with the meds. So Ibuprofen will have to do.

With all that whining almost done, I'm exited about the Provo 1/2 -- my first 1/2 ever. Everyone runs with a few aches and pains, right? That's what medical tents are for.

From Tracy1 on Sat, Aug 02, 2008 at 21:44:36

Race: Provo River 1/2 Marathon (13 Miles) 02:50:00

FANTASTIC RACE! It was my first 1/2 marathon. I feel great now that it's over -- butterflies are all gone. I did 12 minute miles through the first 6 miles, then must have slowed to around 14 minutes miles on the second half. Mile 8, 9, and 10 in particular seemed very difficult.

My conditioning has slipped a bit since May when I did the 10 mile run on the same course. I was 5 minutes behind that pace at mile 10. The long hikes I did in July just were not as helpful as the 10 mile slow runs I was doing in April and May.

My hip bothered me a little bit through mile 6 but that pain got drown out by the general soreness and stiffness in my legs. At mile 12 my legs numbed up a bit and was able to speed up some.

Well, there it is; my rambling report. I just got up from a 2 hour nap. On with life.....

GREAT JOB!! Those pesky downhills at the beginning did a number on the hips, huh??

From Christina on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 17:16:03

Great accomplishment!! You definitely have bragging rights and deserve a chubby melt!!

From Laurie on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 15:09:43

Very nice race!! I'm afraid I will be doing the same thing in hobblecreek in two weeks. Downhill for the first while and then flat/rolling, ouch, that will be tough. And on the nap thing, those are the best, and actually I just read in runners world it's critical to recovery just have your feet propped up! Isn't that great?

I'm glad you enjoyed your race, there is a turkey trot by my house if you want to run on thanksgiving time.......

From Hildisvini on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 18:29:30

Yeah, those downhills are a problem. I'm not sure what can be down about it though. Maybe there is a way to change the stride a little so it doesn't impact so hard?

I am definitely going to get that chubby melt this week, Christina. I've been holding off since May. I'll try not to eat it all in one day though.

I wish you all a great race at Hobble Creek and I look forward to reading your reports.

This was my last big race of the year but I'll be watching for the little fun 5Ks and such to run. Keep me apprised of the turkey trot, Lauri. (Sorry for stalking you)

From Dale on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 20:31:32

Congrats on your first 1/2 marathon! Now that you've got one under your belt (and a PR too boot), you've got something to aim for in the future. Keep at the training and they'll get easier.

Looks like it's time for a new Goal Type! You can cross the Half-Marathon Finish off your list!

2.5 hours hiking

Upper body workout at noon.

I took the scouts on a 20 mile bike ride. Starting at the parking lot near the mouth of Provo Canyon, we biked up to Vivian park. The trail was closed due to "maintenance" but after carrying our bikes over the concrete barriers, there was no evidence of any maintenance. It's a shame that part of the trail was closed during the Provo 1/2 marathon because it has some really pretty spots.

Well, anyway, we turned around at Vivian park and followed the trail down almost to Lavelle Edwards Stadium, then back to the parking lot.

Lots of fun. The other two leaders invited me to go biking with them on Tuesday Mornings. They bike the foothill roads behind Micron and sometime go up to the summit over to Draper. They said they knew some other fun trails and I'm going to show them how to get to AF canyon via Adventure and Learning Park trails (my usual Saturday 10 mile run)

Sounds fun! The scouts will keep you young too! Nice picture!

Chubby melt day. It's good for PPRS (post PR syndrome)

core + upper body workout.

1 mile GP 11:40. That cool morning air was a treat. Feels like football season.

10 miles of walk-running. I crossed paths with my brother Ray. He is trying to get back into running after having knee surgery a couple years back. I saw some cliff rose in bloom. I had thought they only bloomed once -- in June.

You are now inspiring your brother--way to go! Maybe you can inspire Bronco as well. Great job on all your biking and running. I think this cold is almost gone, but it seems to linger long enough to be annoying!

I told my friends about the chubby melt--their eyes just got big and jaws dropped at the thought of it.

From Hildisvini on Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 15:03:03

The chubby melt is really more fun to talk about than to eat. I got a Monte Cristo sandwich for Natasha there. It's the only place I know of besides Disneyland where you can get one.

I haven't seen Bronco on the running trail for ever. Now that he has turned the defense over to another coach, maybe he'll have some time for running again.

2 hours hiking.

20 minutes eliptical

From Tracy1 on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 23:21:32

The eliptical can be a great crosstrainer!! About the next best workout as far as cardio goes!

From Hilldisvini on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 23:25:55

Awesome! I'm going to try 40-60 minutes next time. I'm going to start cycling and swimming more too.

From Christina on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 00:16:58

Yeah, the elliptical is awesome! I actually follow the workout in that book you have--it's a 20 minute routine but you increase the intensity every minute or so.

1 hour cycling. Lloyd, Joel and Shawn showed me some trails around Micron. My legs were burning on the uphill but cooled down on the dirt trails. I had to take it slow because I have street tires. It was a lot of fun. I'll be doing more of that on my own since the group only rides together on Tuesdays. Lloyd is 85 years old. None of us can keep up to him.

 Upper body workout.

Lloyd wasn't the 10-k runner down at the Summer Games last year, was he?? Ha ha! I'll never forget that!!!

A bit of swimming today. I really hate swimming.

 40 minutes on the elliptical.

Swimming would be something different to try. I'm getting inspired by all the swimmers in the Olympics, but not enough to start doing it yet!

Yeah, this is my second strep infection this year. The last one I got was at that wedding reception for Mike's relative and I ate all that ice cream since it's the only thing that sounded good.

From Hildisvini on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 16:46:03

Swimming might be better if I use goggles. There was so much chlorine in the pool, my eyes were sore for two days.

It might be an old wives' tale but they say once you get strep, you are more susceptible to repeat infections. So you might want to get a throat culture early next time you get a sore throat.

I also admire the Olympic athletes for putting so much effort into become the best they can possible be.

Are ya doing ok Hildisvini! No comments on the blog can make a person worry.....Are you depressed cause the Olympics are over? Hope all is well!

From Hildisvini on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 15:14:16

Are you stalking me? ;-) Everything is well. Thanks for checking in on me.

I've been doing a lot of low impact stuff like hiking and elliptical and some weight lifting too. I'm trying to give my back and leg joints a rest for a couple months since they didn't like the half marathon much.

And since this is the "fastrunning" blog I decided not to update my blog :( but I look in occasionally to see how my favorite bloggers are doing!

I hope to do some 5ks this fall starting in October.

From Tracy1 on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 00:22:58

Looking forward to seeing your 5-k training runs and races!! Good to give your body and rest and good to compensate it with low-impact training. You'll be back to short distance running in no time!!

From Laurie on Tue, Sep 02, 2008 at 18:46:49

I've just been a slacker period :P Kudos to you for doing something :) I need to kick myself in the pants and just start getting up at 5a and to bed at 9p. Hey, I've noticed you don't sleep much.....I get a few extra zzzzz if I were you, and of course we are stalking that's what we are here for :P

From Hildisvini on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 13:47:44

Yep. I was a slacker in August too, but not really too bad because I've kept up my low impact stuff.

I'm going to try the treadmill later this month and start looking for some 5Ks! I'm jealous of everyone who is running now that the weather is so nice.

I did the elliptical for 20 and some weight lifting.

Then I played racquetball with some buddies. It's gratifying to compete against people that are more out of shape than me. Even though my race times were non-stellar this year, I felt great through 4 games of racquetball whereas my rotund racquetball mates were completely flushed and out of breath all night long. They were sore for three days after we played last week whereas I was fresh as a daisy.

Yeah, comparing myself to the runners of FastRunningBlog can lead to numbing enervation. One must look at the big picture.

Okay, that's my profound wisdom expounded to ye folks this month.

From Deborah on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 14:23:35

From one slow runner to another I have to agree with your wisdom. There are so many fast folks here on the blog site that to compare ourselves to them would be not uplifting. That said, I think we probably all work hard with what we are given and make the best of it. Congrats on your racquetball fitness victory!

From Tracy1 on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 22:58:49

Great blog report on the racquetball victory!

Hoping you will release more wisdom before month-end!

30 Minutes on the elliptical. Just for kicks I ran 0.1 miles on the treadmill at a 6mph pace. It felt great to run but aftewards, my hip and knee are a little sore -- very discouraging. I'm still going to run a 5k or two in October, I just don't know how I'm going to train for longer races if this doesn't heal. I may have to go to the doctor that Tracy and Christina told me about.

For upper body work, I have the best thing -- 8 dumploads (120 yards) of steer manure on my front and back yards. It's really stinky but I try to spread about 3 yards per evening which really works my body. I should have about 2 months of such daily work to get it all spread out. The ammonia is really helping my respiratory too.

Comments
From Tracy1 on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 22:12:27

I'll have to remember that kind of ammonia the next time I have respiratory problems......

60 minutes hiking Mt. Mahogany. I got caught in a fast moving lightening storm and had to wait under a rock over-hang with my two scared dogs. It was "shocking" enough that Greg Wrubell mentioned it on the BYU pre-game show. That storm had interrupted his son's soccer game in Alpine.

2 hours hiking Grove Creek canyon.

40 minutes on the elliptical.

7 hours hiking Wheeler Peak in Great Basin Ntl Park. It was beautiful there, a little more deserty than Timpanogos. The trail to the summit was only about 4.3 miles but somewhat steep at the end and the altitude killed me - about 1300 feet.

Smeagol and I almost had the place to ourselves. We saw three hikers and no crazy trail runners.

30 min on the elliptical.

I run two miles on the treadmill today. First running I've done since the Provo 1/2. It felt good but it still irritates my hip. That's a big bummer. Maybe I'm limited with just cycling, hiking and 5K & 10K runs.

From KellyP on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 12:47:57

Nothing wrong with cycling, hiking, 5K and 10K runs. If you can do them in good health then they are activities worthy of envy.

Stay strong.

From Hildisvini on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 12:33:59

Thanks, Kelly.

It helps a lot to think that way.

I run 3 miles at Lake Park during lunch. My first real run in two months. It was great to see the ducks and geese and even a pelican. Felt great except for my usual injuries are kinda sore today.

good job on getting out. Ihaven't been very good either. good luck with running. I hope to continue with consistency after I recover and then just keep up low miles.

From KellyP on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 09:34:23

Great to hear that you were able to get through a real run. Hope the soreness fades quickly.

The wildlife just makes for a bonus during a workout.

Hey, do you work the day after thanksgiving? I will come run with you if you are going to be here that day. Or how about Januray 2nd?

Let me know, I have been terrible lately I need to start being better

From Hildisvini on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 20:16:24

Nice to hear from ya. I don't work on the day after Thanksgiving. I might work the 2nd. Gosh, that's too far away to plan. I've been running slower than I was in the summer but I figure it's way better than not running at all, eh?

From laurie on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 20:39:08

no worries, i'm slow again too. I feel like such a blog, or a jello jiggler out on a run, waddle.........

1.5 hours trail running/hiking at Grove Creek. There were half a dozen other trail runners. What's with that? Is this trail running season?

Good job with the workouts!! I've been out of commission due to surgery on my varicose veins... Still haven't got the go from the dr. to start running/exercising yet...

From Hildisvini on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:03:20

Ouch. I didn't know about that. It must be frustrating to hunger for running but the doctor won't let you.

I'm cheering for your speedy return!

How was it-seeing a live mountain lion? Were you very close? What was the temp in the mountains yesterday? I turned down snowshoing cause I was afraid it was too cold...

From hildisvini on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:01:35

Some trackers with hounds had treed the mountain lion. So it was at the top of a very tall fir tree. It's white neck and belly fur made it look like the angel on top of a Christmas tree. It seemed content to just stay there and wait until everyone left.

They say there are lions all over the place but you never see them because they are so stealthy and fearful of people.

I wanted to get closer to take a picture of it with my mobile phone, but the climb was too steep, and the snow too deep... and many miles before I sleep.

I have a couple of friends who might go snow shoeing with me on Saturday at around 11am in the same place. Call if you want to go. (No guarantee we will see another lion though)
