I tried running before i used the elliptical and my shin was still hurting. So i used the elliptical for one hour, then i tried running again and it was a no go. I think i am going to go to the doctor tomorrow and see how my shin is progressing. I will let you all know more tomorrow after my doctor appointment. Thanks for reading and have a good night...

Good luck tomorrow - Thanks for that video about shin exercises. I've been doing some similar exercises but that video explains things very well. Keep icing, stretching, strengthening, and you will feel better soon!

Barry - I don't want to contradict your doctor, especially because I'm not one, but have you checked out the discussion forum, undier "Injuries"? There is a topic on shin splints... http://fastrunningblog.com/forum/index.php/topic,410.0.html

Most people I talk to say that stopping running altogether is not good: the shin pain will return as soon as you come back to it... and that's exactly what happened to me after taking 4-6 weeks off, twice, and trying to get back into running: the pain returned immediately, even though I tried to come back slowly. Everyone I talk to says the same thing: run slower, less, stretch, ice, massage, strengthen... but don't stop running. You may want to ask your doctor about this... Best wishes!

My shins were not hurting after the race at all - I did 11 miles the day after on a trail, and felt great. Took yesterday off, and today they feel a bit stiff... My problem is that when I don't feel the shin pain, I don't ice, stretch, and strengthen as I should... it's very important to keep doing it a while even after the pain is gone to make sure it doesn't come back. But thank you for asking! Have a great day!

Thanks for the help. I am glad to hear that your shin splints are not hurting you. I did ask the doctor about the shin splints coming back. He told me that would be true for me, but I am working out with the elliptical and the stair stepper so I should not get then back. He said shin splints come back for people who do not cross train or do anything while they are off from running. He also said that my shins are looking good. But that was a good question to ask him. Thanks.

I did show the doctor my shoes and asked him what he though about the wear pattern and if I am prone to shin splints. He looked my shoes over and said yes, that I am prone to shin splints. Then he gave me some advice on how to adjust my foot so I could run with my foot being flat. So I will try his advice and see if that helps. Thanks

Wow, sounds like you have a very knowledgeable doctor! Mine just said "Yeah, you have shin splints... do these exercises, ice, and they'll go away eventually"... I did lots of biking, yoga, weights and walking when I wasn't running though, and still they came back. Hopefully you will have better luck than me! I've been doing the exercise in the video you showed me, and it seems to be helping. Thanks! Good luck!
