And I'm back (sort of). Been dealing with some knee crap related to all my old hip crap and well crap! At this point I am going to keep up the PT and try to get out more without aggravating it.

PM: Short run on the BST behind the U. Followed by an hour walk with the pup, rolling, clams, and deadlifts.

PM2: Skinned to the top of Brighton's Great Western lift with Team Stoke in the dark. So fun to be out in the mountains lit up with headlamps, stars, and the stoke of planning the next year's adventures. Saw a blazing shooting star which I promptly wished upon.

I think it was more along the lines of applying for joint custody :-)

Hey I found some old, skinny, never used BD skins. We should try to make kickers for your nordic skis. That would be a good football game project.

Got out of work early so I rushed up the canyon for a ski girl group meet-up at Brighton, but was the only one to show up :(

I headed up alone and at the top a cat driver got out of his cat (and I thought he was going to yell at me), which he sort of did because he told me that I should not be skiing alone and that he has been seeing a mountain lion in these parts the last few days and he was worried that I would get eaten. I saw Jake and Andrea on the way down and warned them about the couger, but I am pretty sure the mountain lion would be disappointed if he tried to eat them!

I shook of his concern and headed up for a second lap. On my first trip up I took a little detour under the lift and through the woods and found myself on the same route the second time up except this time I saw gigantic paw prints following my first set of tracks. The prints looked more canine than feline, but whatever it was obviously followed my tracks so I ripped off my skins and was headed down the mountain approximately 15 seconds later.

My life is too fun now to risk getting eaten!

Intended to run 10 miles today to assess my Antelope Canyon race possibilities, but I couldn't bare leaving the pupsters home. I seriously can't wait until he can go long distances although I will miss his cute puppy-ness! Anyway... we headed up the trail out on Stansbury Island to watch the sunrise and then headed back down and dinked around on the salt flats. Stansbury Island is one of the most beautiful and unique places I've ever been, but also the most raped and pillaged land I have ever seen!

I'm assuming he'd play Caballo Blanco? A pretty good choice in my opinion.

From Jake K on Thu, Feb 05, 2015 at 06:39:34 from 98.202.128.218

Definitely the best and logical choice. He's perfect for that role... and possibly could make the movie good. Plus if you google image "mcconaughey running" he is clearly already proficient in barefoot / shirtless running.

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Feb 05, 2015 at 08:11:55 from 163.248.33.220

If he's playing Jenn Shelton, I'm out.

From Amiee on Thu, Feb 05, 2015 at 08:51:42 from 155.98.164.36

Googling "mcconaughey running" made for a nice start to my day :)

I couldn't find anywhere that actually said what role he is playing. Everyone just assumes Caballo, but I could see him playing Scott Jurek well too, but not Barefoot Ted! Who would play you in the film adaptation of your life?

From Jake K on Thu, Feb 05, 2015 at 08:53:34 from 159.212.71.69

I set a goal to finish in 2:30:00 and I came through the finish in 2:29:57. This SkiMo dealie is the hardest thing I've ever done and I am still trying to decide if I like it. The uphill part is great, but the downhills are downright frightening! The men's winner said one of the descents was the worst snow he has ever skied on and I am just glad I survived - there were bodies and skis everwhere and I only wiped twice.

I am pretty thrilled with how I did considering the 55K two weeks before and running and skiing yesterday. I only missed the podium by a few minutes and had I known I could actually do that well I could have pushed a little harder and rested the day before.

Grandeur "Fun" Run!

2:20:58, 9.5 miles, 3,900 feet of gain.

Set a solid 13 minute Grandeur PR without hurling or feeling that horrible. Was pretty wobbly on the descent into Millcreek, but still faster than I've ever run it. The trails were perfectly wet - sticky but not slick. Best part was finishing with the smell of bacon in the air.

Made friends with a super nice gal on the way down that nicely waited for me atop the final climb to make sure I didn't get lost heading down to the finish (course is unmarked and confusing!). Nice gal also convinced me to head up for a short cool-down loop which ended up being another 1,800 feet of climbing - ha! Trail peeps are crazy.

13 miles total with 5,700 feet of climbing. Perfect Steeplechase training run.

Plantar fasciitis started after 10-hour car ride to Oregon, but I had noticed some lower leg tiredness with my new Bushidos so probably a combination of running more miles then ever, new shoes, and travel brought on the PF. Shins starting hurting too last Saturday and I've pretty much given up on running the Steeplechase on Saturday :(

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
2.600.002.60

Tried to run a few miles on the BST, but shins were too painful.

I iced and elevated my shins all day thinking they might just be inflamed with the work I had done on them on Wednesday. My PT is great, but sometimes I don't think my body responds well to intense treatment. I also tried a combination of beer, Japenese herbal patches, and other substances to try and get my legs to feel better with hopes of still running tomorrow.

I've missed the last 5 years of the #WahsatchSteeplechase because of 3 hip surgeries and constant crap and I almost didn't make it to the start line this year as well. I decided not to run yesterday because of ouchie feet and shins and overall lack of energy and then I woke up this morning and thought about what else I could do this morning and then I thought about what was worse failing or not even trying. Obviously NOT TRYING so I went for it! My shins were burning so terribly at mile 2, I cried and walked and almost turned around. But I didn't... I powered up Black Mountain, bombed Smugglers kamikaze-style, and bonked horrifically with one mile to go! I had previously set a very difficult goal (for me) to finish in 3 hours which I ended up abandoning to get myself to the start and I came in at 3 HOURS ONE MINUTE son of a... But after all this I was just so happy to simply finish. I wish I could do it again next week, but I guess I will have to wait until next year 😋

Ran up a near vertical ski slope pulling on flowers to keep from tipping over backwards and then crawled downhill swearing the whole time.  Fell 5 times. This was dumb. If I hadn't won a pair of Salomon shoes, I would have totally hated this!

But seriously there was 1400 ft of climbing from mile 1.5 to 2.5 and then over 1100 ft loss coming down from baldy in a HALF mile. I wouldn't even ski that slope. Dumb and dangerous with boulders tumbling down towards me. You know how you do something like this and you hate it and then tomorrow you're like, I totally want to do that again. That won't happen here.

I've been looking at photos of the Dolomites for the past zillion years so it feels super surreal being here. I downed a croissant and cappuccino and headed out from Passo Falzarego and immediately struck up a conversation with Lorenzo the oral surgeon from near Milano who happily gave me a brief WW1 history lesson and oriented me to the peaks. We hiked a few hours together and shared a beer at the Navolau Rif which was already rocking out (to Johnny Cash) at 10am.

Lorenzo and I parted ways and I looped all the way around the Navolau to the Cinque Torri and then back to my tiny car. Favorite quotes of my Lorenzo meeting... "I hear marijuanna is now FREE in Colorado" and "Traveling solo is good, you can think...and cry."

I've been in Europe about 30 hours now and all I've consumed is bread, cheese, coffee, beer, and Proseco and that is totally acceptable! Sometimes I think I was born on the wrong continent...

Tomorrow I'm going to climb through the Cengia Martini - a 1.1 km tunnel - and I'm not psyched because I hate being underground but I have to do it because it is history!

Another cloudless day in Dolomiti - molto caldo!

Hiked up to Lagazuoi Grande via the inside of the mountain (WW1 tunnels) . One of the neatest things I've ever done - this totally wouldn't fly in the U.S.! Except a sign advising a helmet, headlamp, and good boots there was no other regulations. The tunnels were super slippery and super creepy, but luckily there was a window to the outside every 5 or 10 minutes. You could explore side tunnels and walk out on ledges dropping 2000 feet holding on only to a slippy cable and see old sleeping quarters and bombs and stuff.

I then looped around a ridiculous gorgeous glacially carved valley - Val Travenanzes before hiking back through trenches and more ruins. What a beautiful place for a war!

Race: Dugway Isolation Run 35K (22 Miles) 04:08:13, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
22.000.0022.00

This was the 3rd year of the Dugway Isolation Run and I've wanted to do it the last 2 years, but I'm always injured. The fact that you get to run on normally not open to the public trails with risk of exposions and you have to undergo a background check to get to the starting line are just a few of the reasons that drew me to the race!

I think it was Andrea that asked me if I had even run 18 miles in the last week and when I thought about it I hadn't even run 18 miles in the last 2 weeks so when I found out that the 30K I registered for was going to run closer to 21 miles I panicked. My everything had been hurting the last 3 weeks and the idea of 20 miles made me want to roll around in Dugway's anthrax farm.

Oh well after the most incredible desert sunrise, the signing of the unexploded notice, and the race director's lengthy course description which I should have listened to since it would have saved me about a mile when I went off course - we were off. I ran the first couple of miles with a group of 5 guys listening to them talk about that guy that went off like a gazelle and was at least a mile ahead the first mile i.e. Fritz. I fell back to take some photos and I felt so lucky to be able to run over these hills. The views were amazing at dawn and there were signs posted all over the course pointing out rock features and odditites like the Alien Take-Off, the Drone Zone, Quicksand, Scorpion Tail, and Stonehenge.

The trail was mostly single-track and shallow sand with very few technical spots. My left leg was super tight the first 5 miles, but I seemed to work out the funk and transfer all the discomfort to my right hip flexor which is more familiar and tolerable. Pretty psyched that I could run 20+ miles on not a lot of "training" and I actually negative split which is pretty neat since it got hot! I listened to tunes the 2nd lap and was able to hit the downhills a little harder since I had worked out some bodily funk.

We hung out at the end of the race and I drank about a gallon of water and made my own pizza to grill (what a great idea!) and had hilarious converations with some Dugway residents that ran their first ever trail race - I think they are hooked!

This race had more schwag then any other race I have ever attended! The finisher medals were beautiful with wildhorses on them and nearly everyone got an award with some sort of animal skull and rocks on them and a raffle prize. The race bag had all sorts of goodies like a tiny race cup to reduce waste, KT tape, mutiple tubes of bug repellent, a nifty GSI lightweight flask that I love, a Sea World San Diego watter bottle (wtf?), a blank envelope filled with some unidentifable white powder, and a ton of other things.

I absolutely loved this event and am sad that more people didn't participate. I'm going to make it my mission to drag a ton of people out there next year!

I've always wanted to run to Rudy's Flat from City Creek and ughhh I still didn't get there. I checked the weather before I left and there was ZERO percent chance of precipitation. I followed the City Creek ridge and got to Dude Peak and then the temperature dropped, the wind picked up, and these ominous black clouds came out of nowhere.

Running down from Dude it started to snow and I couldn't really find a trail and it turned into a horrible buchwhack bonanza. I got cold fast and I should have just turned around and went back the way I came since I had no idea how long it would take to get to Rudy's. I dropped down from the ridge because it was soooo cold and windy up there and then I totally lost any semblance of a trail. This may actually be the most freaked out I've ever been in the outdoors! I had on shorts and a t-shirt and a light windbreaker and it was whiteout condiitons.

I sent an SOS text message to Fritz who was picking me up at Mueller Park and told him if he doesn't hear from me in 30 minutes be worried. I took the first trail I could find that headed off the mountain, which ended up being the North Canyon Trail and dumped me out in some random neighborhood in Bountiful and then Fritz nicely rescued me.

And this is why I love trail running! And now I still need to get to Rudy's grrrrr!

That's only like 10 Alpe d'verts, which they are doing again this year btw. But seriously, I don't think I did a single 5000 foot day last year. What did you do last year? Can I see the graph :)

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 19, 2015 at 13:00:49 from 199.190.170.24

Surprisingly I don't have a graph already made and the numbers are a little fuzzy (after the mexico plague i lost track of stuff for a while), but quick estimate is about 160(ish)K.

The last time I kept good records was '10-11, and we did well over 200K that season, on much heavier gear!

Gorgeous clouds over Timp! I think I'm going to need to up my ski goals for the year since I'm already at 10% of it and it is only Thanksgiving!

Went up to Brighton in the evening for Wasatch SkiMo Race #3. It was so beautiful up there and the snow was so fluffy and happy and yay! This is the first time I actually tried to really race a course and it was so much fun!!! The course was a 415 ft uphill and then a good flat section followed by a powdery downhill. I was pretty proud of my splits:
