Either the scale is wrong at the gym or I am the only person in the world who loses weight sitting on her bum. I am down 6 pounds from my pre-surgery weight and I hope that's not all muscle loss. I am thinking it might have to do with the fact that I can only manage about 2 items at the grocery store each visit. Turns out I would rather starve than ask for help. Can't wait to burn these crutches!!!

Only 5 weeks post-op and I already have normal range of motion, which is better than I can say for the non-operated hip. Began crutch weaning yesterday. Turns out walking is way harder than I remember it. Baby steps.

Are you planning to get the other hip operated on as well? I think that when they do both, they schedule them 6-8 months apart right?

From Lulu Walls on Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 18:41:44 from 155.100.212.98

They will schedule the other hip as early as 3 months out. I am not going to get the other one done until it starts really limiting me, which will hopefully be never. I just find it freaky that my recently op-ed hip has greater range of motion than the non-op side.

Totally overdid it with the walking yesterday. Found myself huddled under my desk in the fetal position for over an hour with the worst back cramps of my life by the middle of the afternoon. Feeling better after intense PT sesh this morning. I seriously have the best PT in the world. If anyone ever needs a recommendation - I have a good one!

As for good news, I get to start adding resistance to my stationary biking. Goodbye level zero!

Things that make me happy: getting home and finding my shiny new bike in a box. Yes a bike in a box. My first road bike as a present to myself for enduring all this hip crap. I even put it together all by myself. I just don't trust that I did it well enough to ride it :)

AM: Biking and supervised RUNNING at PT. Feels so good - oh yeah!

PM: More biking, hip exercises, and restorative yoga at the lovely new Mudita Yoga Studio

*Rant Alert*

It wasn't until two gigantic tears plopped down on my yoga mat tonight that I realized how depressed I have been since I injured my hip last year. It has been nearly 7 months since I sat on that mat.

Multiple doc visits and opinions, hundreds spent on chiropractors, cortisone shots, indecision about surgery, surgery, vomiting all over myself, 6 weeks on crutches, 2 hours a day of PT for 8 weeks now, endless annoying theraband exercises, and having to deal with the idea that I will probably need to go through this all again with the other hip. This sucks!

I find it ironic that a few days before the initial injury I journaled about how happy I was. It was the happiest I had felt pretty much ever and I tried to identify why. At the top of the list was running lots and my Wednesday night yoga class along with feeling hopeful about my future and eating lots of fresh veggies from the Farmer's Market :)

I thought I was strong and resilient but honestly healing and dealing with this hip thing left me with little energy for anything or anyone else. My mental health is so intimately wrapped up in my physical health that this whole ordeal left me depressed, overwhelmed, and not a whole lot of fun to be around. I couldn't even see how dysfunctional and depressing my whole outlook became until now that I am finally snapping out of it.

I know I still have a long road, but I am committed to doing the physical and mental work I need to do to recover completely. I think for the immediate future I might focus a little more on my mental healing than on those darned clam shells.  I am easing into running and I am back to Wednesday night yoga so that is going to help a little too.

*End of Rant*

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

Its can be hard to stay motivated sometimes when something "little" goes wrong - when you have a major injury with a rehab process that seemingly takes forever, and you still can't completely see the light at the end of the tunnel... jeez, that is just rough. Most people in that situation would not be handling this as well as you have.

When all this is over, though, and you have your full health back, you'll never regret fighting through it all.

And just think of 10 days out here every time you feel like junk...

Great rant and I'm really sorry. I too feel like my mental health is tied to my physical health and activity. I've known this about myself since I was a teenager. I found my attitude was greatly dependent on what physical activity I was doing at the time (freestyle BMX and mainstream sports as a kid, climbing as an adult, now running). So I know what you're going through. Hang in there. You've got a good support crew around here. And we'll keep posting pictures to keep your spirits up.

From runningafterbabies on Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 20:23:52 from 71.195.219.247

I enjoyed your blog post about your surgery. You are an engaging writer. What hip exercises do you do? I've been prone to hip/back issues since my last baby and am looking for exercises and stretches to strengthen and relax those muscles.

I'm glad you are snapping out of the darkness. Injuries are really a bummer and I have a feeling you are going to make a great comeback!

From Bryce on Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 21:22:01 from 76.27.58.194

Thought I was finally recovered from my 6 minutes of running five days ago so I decided to give it another whirl. I really want to ease into running without hurting something else, but I am unsure how slow to take it. I ran 1 mile last week so if I follow the 10-Percent Rule that means I won't get up to 2 miles a week for 9 more weeks and it would take another 16 weeks to get to 10 miles a week. Don't think I am going to follow that rule.

Absolutely thrilled with how amazing my hip feels after skiing and running yesterday! I think all that hip extension cross-country skiing broke up some crap. When I went into this surgery they told me that my hip would end up feeling better than it did pre-injury, but to not expect it to be any better than that. Well I can honestly say it feels better than it ever has. I have better range of motion and it just feels good. I so happy :)

Serious Advice Needed!

Has anyone ever had to ease back into running after a huge layoff? My hip is doing fabulous, but my lower legs are on fire. Seriously, I didn't go through this stupid hip surgery to wind up with shin splints. I have been running for 4 weeks now and am now up to 30 minutes of running with walk breaks. I am running on wood chips, stick rolling, stretching, and even got some compression socks. Any other ideas on how to prevent shin splints and ward off the calf/feet pain?

PM: 3 x 10 minutes of running plus a little extra to get me to 3.5 miles and an even 10 for the week!!! Pace was 10:10, 9:17, 9:07, 9:18. Not bad for 15 weeks post-up but my poor calves ughhhhh!

I have... I was out a year ago for 8 weeks. Not HUGE but long enough. I hurt everywhere for several months before my legs got used to the pounding again. What would you like to know? :)

You hurt everywhere for months? Yikes!?! I guess I just wanted to know that this is normal :) I am just really afraid of overdoing anything. How slowly did you have to ease back in?

Ran from me casa to Virgina Street and back. Never realized how uphill 2nd Ave is - ughhh running is hard. This week's goal is to get rid of the walk breaks. They are my total crutch now, but they have been helpful in making sure that I am not overdoing anything.

*Super Rant Alert*

Total utter meltdown! No biking, running, yoga, hip exercises of all kinds until further notice. Surprisingly, this was the first time I cried at PT. My PT handled me pretty well and fed me Kit Kats and Twix while I iced :) That means no desert birthday weekend. Seriously?!? All I wanted to do was go for a bike ride on my birthday. Seems like that wasn't a whole lot to ask the world - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I know that things could be so much worse, but this is frustrating nonetheless. I have done everything right. I do a million hip exercises every day. I have eased into running slowly and I really haven't pushed it. I ice twice a day. I have been super positive. I stretch. I foam roll. I self-massage. I am slightly pathetically feeling sorry for myself right now... It is just that I am putting so much energy into getting healed that this kind of set back just feels mean. I will get through this. I will get through this. Happy thoughts please!

I am so sorry to hear that. I am super impressed by your dedication to rehab and your positive attitude. It's okay to rant and feel sorry for yourself sometimes :) I hope this setback passes quickly. From Lulu Walls on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 at 11:44:39 from 155.100.212.98

Thanks Tina. I am already feeling better, I just needed to let it all out. Considering the current situation, I would be up for a big fat DRINK anytime :)

Andrea - I have been feeling pretty awful since Sunday and have what they call iliopsoas bursitis. I am pretty swollen and have really limited hip flexion. I am told it is not uncommon in this stage of the recovery and I guess it will only calm down with total rest and ice. I felt better the day after surgery then I do now, but that could have been all the drugs.

From Andrea on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 at 11:49:31 from 72.37.244.100

Oh that's terrible. How frustrating that you have done everything right and still the bursitis occurs. Maybe you should get some more of those drugs? Can you do arm strength training - sounds miserable, I know!

P.S. I would love to join for non-aggravating hip fun too.

20 precarious miles on the elliptical and 10 melty minutes on the arm bike. My PT said no biking or running and nothing about no elliptical-ing so I thought I would give it a whirl. I figured there is not a whole lot of hip flexion at the lowest angle so I should be alright.

The arm bike was broken at the gym :( I guess I have been hitting it pretty hard these past few days. Did 10 minutes on the bike and then 30 miraculous minutes on the elliptical.

Think I might be getting over the hump with the latest setback. This hip has been feeling too close to what it felt like pre-surgery for me to be stoked. Going to try to motivate for an early morning pool sesh, but the odds of that happening are almost laughable.

Almost cried again at PT today. My hip has stiffened up horribly with the week of inactivity so I had to go through the most painful passive stretching session of my life. He dug into my piriformis so hard that I think I blacked out. He was trying to get the pain to an 8 (out of 10 scale) to get it to release and I think we got there. But good news though the hip flexor issue seems to be clearing up.

Starting over.

These last few weeks have been a bit discouraging. After a few weeks of light activity and absolutely no PT except for stretching, ultrasounding, and manual therapy I am now back to doing some basic PT exercises and biking with zero resistance. Holy deja vu! These are the same exercises I started when I was still on crutches except for back then I didn't have any pain with them.

I have been going over and over in my head how this happened. I was doing so fabulous and really thought I was being patient and careful. I look back at my posts and laugh that the only thing I was complaining about when I started running again were my shins. I was so worried that I was going to get shin splints - ha ha. Six weeks ago I did a 45 mile bike ride and was easing into running 10 miles a week and now look at me. Sad.

There are really only 2 possibilities. I either overdid it or I managed to re-tear something in my hip. My ortho surgeon and PTs both agree this is weird, but x-rays and images are all good. We are giving it 1 more week and if it is not getting better we will go in for more advanced imaging and injections and other fun stuff. Big problem is with everything done to my hip it is really hard to see with imaging if anything is wrong. The only good way to see is by going back in.

I really want to be positive, but something doesn't feel quite right. It feels exactly how it did before the surgery, but worse.

Lame.

A year ago today, the world lost a pretty special soul. "Steve was a mischievous muse and an instrument of positivity and light. His quick wit and exuberance for the wonders of the world transformed this mundane plane of existence for all who crossed his path. He did not relegate art to specific times and places; he consciously created and consumed it every moment of his life."

"Cynicism will only overtake me at the point at which my capacity for wonder becomes blunted...so,...never!" \m/ - Spingry

AM: Plenty to reflect on while riding the bike this morning. When Steve first left the realm I was so inspired to "live the dream" as he was so often quoted as doing. Hell if I left the world with just 1 percent of the impact that man had on his community that would be a life well spent. All the changes in this past year and this injury deal has pretty much sucked the soul out of me so I needed this reminder of Steve's life to spur some more change in me. So in honor of Steve I am going to do and/or commit to doing 5 crazy things today that will either benefit others or benefit myself therefor indirectly benefiting others. (I just need to come up with them)

Jake and I are scheming a Wind Rivers backpacking adventure one weekend, we could get a crew together - could be fun...I've heard it kinda looks like the Sierras :)

From Lulu Walls on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:30:45 from 155.100.212.98

As far as logistics go it seems easier to go to France and hike the Mont Blanc Circuit than hike the JMT. Plus you don't have to carry as much gear and there is wine waiting for you at the end of each day.

I love the Winds! I did a trip to the Cirque of the Towers a few summers ago and it was amazing. The mosquitoes were something out of a nightmare though. You have to check out the town of Lander - it is my favorite place in the whole world! I should probably just move there...

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:34:36 from 155.100.226.54

Hmmm I wonder if my SW Rapid Rewards points can get me to Mont Blanc

I am itching to get up to Cirque of the Towers this summer. I have heard that the skeeters are pre-historic size up there, though. Maybe w/ an early snowmelt, they'll die down by late summer / early fall this year.

From Lulu Walls on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:43:03 from 155.100.212.98

It is not just their size, but their sheer number. Skeeters never bother me, but I had a serious meltdown on the hike. I chucked my trekking poles in the woods and started swearing at bugs. They shouldn't be as bad this year, but I would still bring along one of these for sure! http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Research-Deluxe-Spring-Headnet/dp/B002UOTDM0/ref=pd_sim_sg_6

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:47:53 from 155.100.226.54

We had some epic skeeter swarm encounters on the JMT. There was this one meadow up in Yosemite where they had all hatched like 10 minutes before we got there. We ended up RUNNING for 1-2 miles w/ full backpacks and waving our hands the whole time. One of the worst experiences of my life at the time - I'm not sure why I look back at it and laugh now :-)

The Winds are neat. Last summer, my husband and some friends did a one day crossing of the Winds from Dubois, WY to Pinedale, WY. I originally linked to a blog detailing their adventure, but I deleted it because it is not family-safe due to a few instances of profanity.

From jun on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 14:55:26 from 205.158.160.209

Hahaha. Tina, it was just fine. I read nearly all of it and it was plenty appropriate. If people can't handle a little vulgarity then they are welcome to stop reading. It was a brilliant article. Thanks for sharing.

5 months post-surgery this week and I am now feeling about as good as I was at about 2.5 months. I guess that is both a good thing (that I am getting better) and a terrible thing (since I regressed so much). Hopefully it is all ups from here on out. I am rewarding myself (for enduring these past 5 months of absolute joy) with a big trip in August, but I can't decide which to do.

 1) John Muir Trail - I have wanted to do this forever and it looks amazing! My highly potential hiking partner just bailed so I am looking into doing it solo, but that might be pretty rough since I don't know what kind of shape I am going to be in a few months.

2) The Mont Blanc Circuit - Looks even more amazing. It wouldn't be as far and I wouldn't have to carry as much gear as the JMT and there is wine at the end of each day of hiking :) Will cost a ton, but whatever it is just money.

3) Machu Picchu - Have wanted to do this forever as well and I have enough Sky Miles to get there for FREE. August is kind of a crummy time of year to go there though.

Where should I go? Any other ideas?

What a menu of options!

I love the JMT but its always just a (long) day's drive away... if I had the chance to hike the Mont Blanc Circuit, I think that would be my pick of the 3. Its pretty expensive though.

JMT should be mosquito free in August this year, which will make it a much more enjoyable experience :-)

From Bryce on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 23:02:27 from 76.27.58.194

I gotta say Mount Blanc too. Expensive, yes, but a good one to do solo and probably a little less risky with the hip healing (less weight to carry, bailout places if needed, and less remote) Just get there and get done before this craziness over runs the palce. Glad you are looking forward!

It is official, I can start running again. But I have lots of rules... For the next week I can only run 2 X 5 minutes every other day on the treadmill. I need to stick to the rules and not go ape crazy so as not to have a repeat of what happened in March.

I am not exactly happy with the level of pain I still have, but at this point I have to be healed and just probably have a bunch of scar tissue that needs to get broken up. I can elliptical and bike as much as I want though with pain as my guide.

Since everyone has been whining about sprinklers lately... This morning I was enjoying my coffee and reading a magazine at the bus stop when out of nowhere I get blasted with a hose with similar water pressure of a fire hose which literally gets my pushed out into the street earning a few angry fist pumps from one insensitive driver. Woman responsible for said hose is laughing her @ss off and as I am trying to wring out my pants and jacket I get swarmed by bees. Yes bees and I am scared to death of bees. My grandmother just sent me this lotion called Bee Nectar and it smells like smarties and obviously it is called bee nectar for a reason since the bees are not swarming anyone else at the bus stop. I put my sopping wet jacket over my head and hoped for the best. The only good thing to come out of this morning is that my fellow bus stop peeps who have never once acknowledged my existence in the last 2 years acknowledged me today :)

A bike pedal debacle kept me from making it up to the Jeremy Ranch Road so I rode up Emigration instead. Can't wait until I can run; bikes are too complicated. Then b-fast at Ruth's - I hope we can keep this up all summer :)

I didn't say it was boring! There were clouds so you couldn't see the eclipse even if you wanted to burn your retinas!

Doesn't soccer involve running?!

From Lulu Walls on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 11:02:17 from 155.100.212.98

Soccer involved doing a lot of things I shouldn't be doing, but it was so fun arghhhhh!

From allie on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 11:34:45 from 161.38.218.168

that is a well-rounded day of activities. you didn't suck it up nearly as badly as i did yesterday. just wait -- i'll redeem myself next time.

i didn't see the eclipse, but i was talking to my mom on the phone while she was looking at it and she described it to me. i can't wait to tell my grandchildren about it.

Had in my head that I was going to attempt Big Mountain on the bike this morning, but my glutes were still so sore from PT, all that "running" on Friday, and being on my feet for 8+ hours yesterday helping out at the Squaw Peak race that I almost bailed for a flatter ride. But I didn't!

Rode from the base of Emigration to Big Mountain and back with 3300 feet of climbing - vomit! My quads almost quit working at the top and that is the closest I have ever gotten to seriously bonking - it was AWESOME! I am 6 months out of surgery this week and I can finally do things that require a GU :) I am getting my life back!

Speaking of awesome, had a blast working at the Squaw Peak finish yesterday and watching all the amazing runners finish. I think watching people finish races is my most favorite thing to do ever. I took photos of the finishers among other things like feeding Creamies to this one guy that finished in the top 20 having never ran further than 17 miles in his whole life, icing people's heads, doling out chocolate milk, applying sunscreen, and listening to seriously one amazing story after another.

I also got to see my friend's mom finish amazingly strong (I wish my mom could do that) and finally got to meet Bryce from the blog. I heart runners. I am so doing this race next year!

From Lulu Walls on Mon, Jun 04, 2012 at 13:44:28 from 155.100.212.98

Good question Jun. I was just thinking that I should probably start hiking one of these days. So the answer is I have no idea if I can hike and carry a pack well.

Last week: 9.9 running miles and 138 biking miles

Goals for this week: 12 running miles, 100 biking miles, more hiking, stop slacking on my PT exercises, and eat more vegetables. Funny how the PT exercises are the first thing to go now that I am able to be more active and that shouldn't be the case!

It has definitely taken some getting used to, but it feels really good and like someday I am going to be wicked fast :) I haven't been blessed with the most wonderful of joints so the least impact-ful I can make my running the better.

I'm so glad your running is going well.

I'll be driving to Colorado this weekend and I plan to check out your claim that they sell Leinenkugel's there. Want some?

From Lulu Walls on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 22:06:24 from 166.70.240.95

Actually, you are never going to believe it, but you can find Leinenkugel's in UTAH!!! Last weekend I saw the Summer Shandy in cans at the Rafter B gas station outside of Rockport State Park. Not a real big fan of the Shandy, but I still almost crapped myself to see a Leine can.

6-month post-op appointment today...

After appointment cancellation/confusion debacle, I finally got to see my doc today. "If all our patients were doing as well as you at 6 months, we would be very happy," says hip fellow. "But I am not very happy! Why didn't you warn me how awful this was going to be?!?" says a very irritated me. Hip surgeon says, "Are you still considering having the procedure done on your other side?" "No way in he!! am I ever going through this again," I say without hesitation.

Anyway... x-rays look good, range of motion is good, strength is pretty darned good, mental outlook not too shabby. Back into the world I am finally, fully allowed to go.

I shared this photo many months ago and I think it clearly shows what my issues were, plus I think it is pretty cool. I just can't say enough how happy I am to be able to be more active - it is like my whole future is now looking brighter. I have been thinking a bunch about that Anton Krupicka quote, "I'm a less good person when I'm not able to run, and that shouldn't necessarily be the case,” and trying to figure out how I can be a better person regardless of my activity level :) But hopefully I never have to go through anything like this again to test out all those fabulous life lessons I have learned these past 6 months.

AM: Stationary bike

PM: Baby Aves loop on the bike. Forgot that City Creek is closed to bikes on even days, but slightly thankful because I could use a rest day of sorts. Just discovered this site called Strava, which you upload your rides to and then you can compare your times to yourself and others. I have to admit that I am getting a bit bored with biking so the site is helping because it lets me earn rewards and stuff :) It is actually super neat how it maps out the segments of your ride and it works for running too.

Learned one of the most important lessons of my life today! Sorry if this is TMI, but I want to remember the details of today...

Went out for a ride in the hottest part of the day, climbed a good 4000 feet part of it on a newly black topped road radiating heat like you wouldn’t believe, essentially pushed myself harder than I have in nearly a year plus I sweat like an obese man, and drank about 32 ounces of water over the course of 4 hours. I know I needed to drink more and it was kind of freaking me out, but there wasn’t anywhere to refill and I felt okay.

Got home, felt fine, yet tired, drank a bunch of water, an emergen-C, ate some toast with almond butter, stretched, and laid on the couch for about an hour talking on the phone. Stood up and BAM, vertigo like I haven’t experienced in a long time. Then came the nausea, vomit, tunnel vision, crazy wavy lines, imbalance, more vertigo, and sheer and utter panic. Thought I was going to die for sure!

Long story short, I used to have a huge problem with vertigo and crazy, weird visual aura stuff. After seeing a ton of ENTs and neurologists I was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, Vestibular Migraines, and recurrent BPPV. Tests showed that my right inner ear was not responding to any stimulus so I was pretty much screwed and there wasn’t a whole lot that could be done. My symptoms seemed random, but I started paying attention to them and started noticing that they would happen after long runs or after I drank a lot of wine. I started thinking my symptoms were related to dehydration, but of course my docs thought that was a bunch of shizzle.

As a personal experiment I started being super conscious about water and electrolytes pretty much to the point of obsession. Anyone who knows me knows that I can be seldom seen without a water bottle and I typically freak out if I go somewhere without water :) And guess what? I have been nearly symptom free for a couple of years now so much that I almost forgot I have ever had these problems. That is until today!  As much as this sucked and I seriously thought I was dying, now I am almost 100% sure all these crazy things can be linked to dehydration, which feels pretty empowering actually. Granted water is not going to make my right inner ear work so I will always have weird issues with that, but I believe that adequate hydration can prevent attacks like this.

I will now be carrying a camel back on my road bike. I don’t care if it is so totally uncool, because what is really uncool is vomiting all over yourself because your vision is so wonky and your head is spinning so bad you can’t seem to find your own bathroom.

Ride: Home to Big Mountain and back. 44 miles, 4031 feet of elevation gain.

Anyone want to buy a road bike?

Glad you survived that one Lulu and I think your discovery is certainly valid. If you have a "weakness" or "sensitive" vestibular system or inner ear nerve apparatus then it would seem likely that it could become less than fully functional if you limit perfusion to that particular area by dehydration. When the pulse pressure weakens to balance center... bang...out it goes. Sort of like angina if the heart muscle lacks a bit of perfusion for a minute...anywho stay healthy and camelbacks on road bikes are a trend waiting to happen anyway. Just don't fill it with wine.

My first race in nearly a year and I did it in a strapless, pink, puffy dress! Somehow I got placed on Team Amazing(ly dressed) with Jake, Andrea, Devra, and Kevin so I tried to run really fast :) I only thought I was running 400 meters so when the baton got passed to me a second time I thought crap cuz I had nothing left. Hiked from the White Pine TH to the base of the Pfeifferhorn with quite the crew of awesome peeps including Kevin, Andrea, and Jake from FRB. I was so unbelievably stoked with my ability to hike that I am pretty sure I annoyed everyone (including myself) with my exclamations of joy every few feet :)

This hike was a huge confidence booster for the hip. There was no way I could have done this hike pre-surgery so maybe it was worth it after all. I had no pain in the hip joint and just a tiny bit of tightness in my hip flexor, but overall my legs actually felt quite strong. With all the cycling, squats, and endless PT exercises I have been doing, this may be the strongest my legs have ever been. So stoked for life right now! What an awesome weekend!

After reading the 50 Lessons Learned from 50 Days of Running, I've decided to embark on my own running streak (even if it is for only 5 minutes a day). I am hoping that may get me out of my lack of interest in running funk. Well it isn't necessarily a lack of interest, but more of a trying to figure out what direction I want to take with running contemplative funk since I am starting to accept the fact that running might not be the best thing for my old lady joints.

Of course there is no formula for success except, perhaps, an unconditional acceptance of life and what it brings. ~Arthur Rubinstein

The one solid lesson I have learned this past year is that nothing ever goes as planned. A few months ago I bought a plane ticket to Switzerland with the goal of hiking the entire Mont Blanc Circuit. It was my reward for enduring my hip surgery/recovery thing and acted as some serious motivation to getting solid and strong. And well three weeks ago my feet hurt with the first few steps in the morning and now yesterday I couldn't even hike 2 miles. I would call the heel pain quite crippling and it isn't getting any better so time to start thinking about what the heck I am going to do in 3 weeks. As far as I see it I have 3 options.

1) Suck it up. Maybe I am just a wuss. Do trip as planned. Wash down lots of ibuprofen with red wine.

2) Beach vacation. Europe is a big place. There has to be something besides trekking Mont Blanc that I would enjoy.

3) Eat my plane ticket. Honestly I am not really a spend all day in museums kind of person so not going is a real option for me right now. I am using all my vacation time to do this trip so if I can't do the kind of trip I want to do, why go? I think I might be happier spending a long weekend riding my bike in the Sawtooths and soaking in the Salmon River than sitting on my butt in Europe.

Hopefully the feets get magically better in the next week and I won't have to make any decision at all :)

Taping my arches really helps my pf. The strassburg sock, icing, golf ball rolling and ibuprofen have also helped me. I've had it since last august. I say go! You might decide not to hike, but there are so many things you could do instead to celebrate your healthy hip. Cold laser treatment really helped with my pf pain too.

From jun on Mon, Jul 30, 2012 at 15:13:11 from 205.158.160.209

Not sure what your injury is, but often heel pain is associated with weak calves, something that seems pretty right up your ally considering your recovery from the surgery and all. Starting doing calf raises every day, lots! Then get the inflammation down in the heel pain and you'll be good to go. Don't give up yet.

PM: Short hike on some dirt roads and then swam across a lake. Yup a lake. Can't really swim so it was pretty much the scariest thing I have ever done. Then froze quite a bit more...

Memory Grove RUNNING!

Getting absolutely psyched for Europe trip! T-minus 6 days!

The current agenda: wine drinking bike tour in Paris, hiking from Chamonix, France to Courmayeur, Italy, biking through Barolo wine country, hiking in the Liguria cliffs and then sunning it up in the Italian Riveria.

I believe this trip is going to propel me into some sort of greatness. Well at least propel my body into some real running action.

From Lulu Walls on Sun, Aug 19, 2012 at 16:13:51 from 166.70.240.95

Carpenter's CR still holds for Pikes Peak as well. Killian didn't even come close. He said he didn't try to break it because he didn't like the type of trail. Fussy Europeans!

From Fritz on Sun, Aug 19, 2012 at 16:42:38 from 173.10.22.170

Carpenter's record is 3:16. Krupicka thought Killian could be in the 20s but he finished with 3:40. He says he didn't try because he knows he can't beat Carpenter's CR. What's surprising is that Max King was 3:50.

Carpenter is a freak! Weighing 122 lbs and with a VO2 of 92 probably helps.

Woke this morning at 6 am to get an early start and caught the most ridiculous sunrise ever. The Alps are beyond amazing. Hiked from the Refuge de la Croix up through the Col des Fours down into the Ville des Glaciers and then up the Col de le Seigne into Italy and then down into Courmayeur. Perfect bluebird day all the way, a good 18 miles or so and about 4500 feet of elevation making my 3 day total over 14,000 feet. I think I'm back!!!

Snow!!! Set out from Courmayeur in the rain and encountered snow after just an hour. Was not prepared for this at all and I was starting to freeze. Since I still had several hundred meters to climb and a good few hours before I got to the nearest shelter, I decided to turn around :(

Sopping wet and chilled to the bone I took a bus back to Chamonix though the creepy 12 km tunnel. The weather was even worse in Chamonix at a little over 30 degrees. All hotels are booked solid with the UTMB so I had to settle for some super lavish 4 star resort a few miles from town costing me a whole 4 nights hostel worth which means only baguettes and boxed wine from here on out (yes, I was happy to find that the french also have boxed wine).

Anyway... Weather is so terrible that they had to completely change the UTMB course from 168km to less than 100km because the passes are impassable. I CANNOT imagine what it was like to set out this evening in freezing temps and pouring rain and know that it is only going to get worse. All participants were required to carry 4 layers of clothing and were instructed to at no time stop moving out there tonight right before the gun went off.

Have to say the start of the UTMB was unbelievable. People were hanging out of every terrace, on top of telephone booths, swinging from light poles and screaming their lungs out for the 1500+ runners braving the elements. Every cook was out of their kitchen banging on pots and pans and I heard cheers in more languages than I can count.

Abso-feaking awesome!!!

J: Why not?

Most people would have given up after 14 days. At this point, you might as well keep trying and believing.

That sucks, though. I hate seeing people who want to be healthy be so injured :-( Not fair!!

Ummm so I guess there was a marathon in St. George today so I got up early and rode from the finish to mile 16 passing several police officers whom were very vocal about their belief that I would not be able to ride up to Snow Canyon, "it is way steep you know." Apparently I look like a wuss on a bike. Rode up in the dark with a very dim headlamp and ran smack into a bush that was growing well into the middle of the bike trail (important for later in story).

Watched the front runners cruise through mile 16 and hopped on the bike to follow them down canyon. Was flagged down by fellow cyclist about a mile down trail who asked if I had a CO2. I graciously gave him my one and only cartridge because, well I never get flats, only to get my own flat 2 minutes later. I hastily changed the tube and flagged down another biker for a pump. Obviously I am not capable of pumping up my own tire or Mr. Police Man was bored as he insisted on pumping up my tire for me. As I ride away, I hear the police officer yell that my back tire now looks flat. Seriously?!? Crap!

I get to about mile 18 and now both tires are flat. I chuck my bike off the trail and start to cry and throw a tantrum like any mature female. Seriously. Seriously? I then do the next smartest thing and just start running with my bike. I make it to mile 19 and my calves are on fire. Bike shoes don't make the best running shoes so I do the next smartest thing and start running in my socks. Some cyclists stop to try and help, but since I have 2 flats I am pretty much a hopeless case. I pass about 5 other bikers with flats and another with both tires flat and I vow to never ride my bike again.

At around mile 21, two of the most selfless bikers stopped to help and were determined to get me riding again. Turns out the trail is littered with thorns and goat heads and my bush running over doomed me for the ride. We picked about 8-10 thorns out of each of my tires and then I sat down to pick 2-3 out of each foot. If anyone knows these two gentleman pictured below, please let me know!

Got to the finish, luckily before the race was over, to cheer on some of the finishers and to round up two slightly delirious runners, whose identities will remain anonymous. Congrats to all you runners out there!!! You motivate me to continue moving despite my never ending challenges! Headed back to SLC via Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe, Utah which involved sleeping in a bus in a trailer park and soaking in random bathtubs scattered throughout the hillside. Always an adventure.

First ever Sbarro run. Ran from me casa to 11th ave, down Memory Grove, to the City Creek food court, and then back home. Feels good to be running outside now, especially in the rain.

My PF is back with a vengeance and my lower legs are killing me though and I don't understand why. Previous to this year I have never even had sore calves after a big run. Is this just what it is like after a year layoff? Is my form weird because I think I am still favoring my good side? Is this just what it is like to get older? Is it the shoes? Is it all the stretching I am doing to try and make it better? Is it my diet? Or is it because I sit on my bum most of the day? This article scares me!

Calf pain is way common it seems when first running. I dealt with it for like 6 months when I first started. Are you getting plenty of potassium and calcium? I think things feeling a little off are probably just from getting your body used to running again.

That article scares me also! I sit all day and I hate it.

From Lulu Walls on Wed, Oct 17, 2012 at 10:24:02 from 155.100.212.135

That is what I have been thinking... my body just getting used to the pounding. But it seems a little ridiculous so I have been wondering if it could be something else.

Hmmm probably not getting enough calcium. Interesting thought. Will go take an Emergen-C now...

A little nervous for the big family relay this weekend. I need to run around 10 miles over 2 legs this Saturday. I think I can do it, but I just really, really don't want to mess anything up since I am finally making some real progress.

Here is a clear illustration of my nervousness. I have only had four 10+ mile weeks in all of 2012. Just for fun, here is my weekly mileage for the past year:

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

The Fall 50's course directions: Start running at Gill's rock and don't stop until someone hands you a beer.

I have to say that is was pretty special that my first real big run race dealie was with my family in WI. It was pretty much Wisconsin's version of the Ragnar, but with lots and lots of beer.

Found out the night before the race that I would be running 3 legs of the relay meaning 4.5 more miles than the 10 I was already freaked out about running. Not to mention the fact that I was totally sleep deprived after my "red eye" on Friday morning.

Leg 2: 6.5 miles in 53 minutes. Was shooting for 9-10 minute miles, but hovered around 8's and it felt AWESOME. So much for WI being flat. Leg 2 began and ended with B Street type hills - what the heck?

Leg 9 & 10:  Was already sore from my first run 5 hours before so I have to admit I wasn't too psyched for 8 more miles. Ran the first five miles in the low 8's and then met up with my few months shy of 70 uncle and ran to the finish at a glorious (more relaxed) pace.

14+ miles - and it wasn't that bad - cannot freaking believe it! The hip held out well, but my calves and abs have never been so sore. No hip or quad soreness whatsoever. Well maybe a little psoas stiffness, but not much more than a typical day in my office chair. Weird. I think I am ready to step things up a bit. I still think it is pretty crazy that I ran that far considering I have only done about 3 runs over 5 miles in the last year...

@Scott I am certainly motivated and excited to start hitting some trails. I don't see any real reason to not shoot for 50 :)

From Jake K on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 15:30:32 from 155.100.226.191

For some reason my comment keeps getting blocked.

The short version of what I tried to type is that you are on the trajectory for 50 by March! :-)

The long version was much dorkier, and probably only funny to me anyways.

From Lulu Walls on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 15:35:20 from 155.100.212.135

Ha! Poly nom ial is on the vulgar list for sure. But yes, either on the trajectory for 5000 miles by March or getting really, really hurt again. Am definitely stepping back after this weekend though...

Up until a week ago, we had 2 just sitting around! But we finally set our bikes up on them and intend to start riding again. I bet KSL or craigslist have some cheap ones you could look into. If you get one, I have some really awesome Spinervals videos you could borrow. The 90s era spandex and hair are quite entertaining and the workouts are decent, too.

Although, if you are really adventurous, we have a set of barely used rollers you could borrow. I was never able to stay upright for more than a few seconds, but you might have better luck and balance than me!

From Lulu Walls on Sun, Oct 28, 2012 at 13:01:38 from 166.70.240.95

What kind of trainer do you have? I am slightly overwhelmed with all the types and the used ones I am seeing for sale are they poorly reviewed wind type.

From Tina on Sun, Oct 28, 2012 at 15:01:52 from 216.160.224.46

Both of ours are fluid. I bought the first one in 2003 and I don't think they make it anymore. I remember paying around $160 for it back then and I recall it having decent reviews. We bought this one http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_120106_-1___202608 in 2010 for Nate. It seems harder (greater resistance in the same gears) than the other one, but the price was good. If I weren't cheap, I would probably buy the much better rated (but almost 3X the price) CycleOps fluid2.

What a glorious day! Yup, glorious. First real trail run of 2012 granted there was a lot of hiking. The one good thing about coming back from a serious injury is having all these firsts to celebrate. And celebrate I did with a snow angel on one of the Avenue's Twin Peaks.

Started at Morris Meadow, turned around when I heard gun shots a little too close at the base of Black Mountain, hopped over the Twin Peaks, down some trail I've never been on to the main BST, and then back to MM. Holy stoke!

Walked to Smith's to get cough drops, cough syrup, and ice cream. I have been sick more times in the last year than I have all other years combined. This is getting ridiculous and I am super annoyed. Is it because this is my first year working in a hospital type-setting or is it because I am a stress ball and not taking very good care of myself? Here's what I need to do:

1) Get more sun this winter and take Vitamin D supplement.

2) Drink an EmergenC every day if not twice a day.

3) Better manage stress i.e. yoga at least once a week, massage once a month, and learn to chill the freak out.

4) Eat more garlic!

5) Develop a hand washing compulsion.

What else can I do?!?

The next couple times you get sick, run yourself into the ground. Your body will think "aw snap, she's just gonna be stupid and do her thing even if she's sick and us killer T-cells get no break at all." Then your immune system will preemptively get stronger to prevent itself from having to deal with your crazy self. That's what I've done and honestly it seems to have worked for the most part.

First Turkey Trot training run. I really want to beat my time from last year, which is going to be really tough even though it was only a week before my pretty massive hip surgery and I hadn't been running at all. Reason being I want to know that I am better off after the surgery and resultant rehabilitation marathon.

Jacked up on too much pumpkin spice coffee I decided to run a mile as fast as I could down Memory Grove with the result being a 6:52. Pretty awesome considering I've never run a mile under 7 in my life and feel like I have pneumonia or some other serious lung crap!

First physical therapy appointment in over 2 months. Having more problems with the darned hip lately and have been starting to really worry that something is wrong since I am approaching the one year mark. All the kinks should have gotten worked out by now...

Long story short, my hip capsule is demonstrating some major laxity and this is something that is not going to fix itself considering I am a year out of surgery now. Basically, the ligaments holding my hip in place are too loose making it feel like the darned thing is going to pop out on me and all my other muscles and tendons surrounding the hip have tightened up to try and do the capsule's job. I guess it is one of those rare complications from this type of surgery. In the back of my mind I think I knew I was going to need some more work done and I was coping by denial and/or optimism and registering for races.

Been pretty down about my hip for the last week and had a really bad hip day yesterday so I considered not even running the Cold Turkey. Woke up this morning feeling not so horrible and downed a handful of ibuprofen with some coffee and ended up feeling pretty good.

I totally abandoned my goal of running faster than last year, but after a fast-ish first mile I decided to give it a go finishing around 28:20 and making my goal - boo yah! Set another downhill mile PR of 6:47 - holy crap! Running fast is hard, I have no idea how y'all do it. I spent the 2 miles of downhill listing all the things I am thankful for in my head to distract me from the running. The hip is so unpredictable it is about driving me insane. My PT had a long chat with my surgeon on Wednesday and it has been pretty much decided that I am going in for a capsular plication - doesn't that sound fun! Broke trail all the way to Big Water this morning on the Nordics. Holy wiped! That was a pretty nice way to celebrate the anniversary of my stupid hip surgery. Some days I feel like I am worse off than before the surgery and then there are weeks like this one where I feel hopeful and almost normal.

Problem is my hip joint is too lax now (a side effect of the surgery, which I think may have even been a problem before the surgery too) and I've been told that it won't get any better without additional surgery. Part of me wants to jump right in and get healing, but the other part of me just wants to deal. I ran 11 miles this week and skied 9 today with very little discomfort so all I know at this moment is that there is no way in he!! I am going through with the surgery this week. I want to enjoy the snow, the holidays, and just see what happens.

Surgery still doesn't guarantee anything and who knows, what if it does get better on its own and I am able to ski the Birkie and run the Red Hot and the Buffalo Run. I would be so stoked!!!

Count that at 0.1 fast miles!

Daybreak is exactly what I thought it was going to be.

snoozing is really the best thing in the world, especially in the winter, so good job with that. and you still got a good workout in!

Bike and quality foam roller time. Feeling very optimistic about the hip lately. Dunno what it is, maybe the lovely weather!

PM: Wandered around downtown to finish my Christmas shopping for at least 2 shopping miles. I love how the moment I write how optimistic I feel about the hip I get a call from my hip doc's office. So I was going to do this fancy imaging study to try and determine if my hip problem is in fact coming from the laxity issue versus just psoas issues. I had since convinced myself that it is all psoas and will magically get better and I won't need surgery. Well turns out doc decided the best thing for me to do is an arthroscopic "exam." He thinks that would be the most effective way to figure out what is going on and then if he finds something he will go ahead and fix it. He is going to see me tomorrow morning to talk things through :(

Sorry....

Abby wants me to remind you that she's available to bird-sit.

Is it okay with you? It would be from Dec 28 through Jan 3. That is kind of a long time... If you like her I would even let you keep her :)

I'm sorry. I will miss you :( Good luck

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 12:08:28 from 155.100.226.191

Ughhhh. Sorry.

We'll get the bikes off the wall and you can move in on Feb 2nd. Assuming you can still make pumpkin pancakes post-surgery?

From runningafterbabies on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 12:25:12 from 71.195.219.247

We will miss you! I'm so sorry you have to go through this again.

ROOMMATES!

This totally sucks. You've already been through too much and now they want you to go under the knife again :( But this time it's going to be better because you have great friends and we'll learn how to knit and do puzzles. We can play 6-hour board games like the cool math kids do too.

From Lulu Walls on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 16:40:29 from 155.100.212.135

Yay! 6-hour games. Now I can't wait :) This is going to be so fun!

I will definitely still be able to make pancakes, but this time with ground up narcotics. Fun for everyone!

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 18:31:24 from 24.10.249.165

I'm so sorry about that.

You have lots of friends on here who like hearing from you. You could post movie and music reviews. Recommend restaurants. Spout political opinions. Pontificate on the meaning of life. Just kind of make it a general interest blog.

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 18:58:25 from 67.177.11.154

Yeah, I'm with Rob, I say keep the blog going!

And plus the rule of our house is: no dinner until you finish your blogging.

Sorry to hear that you've got to do another round of surgery Lulu. I hope your recovery is quick so you can get back out on the trails! It's wonderful that you have such great friends to hang out with during your recovery.

From allie on Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 20:11:01 from 97.126.210.4

i'm so sorry.

i won't join you in the board game sessions, but i can certainly teach you how to stay enthusiastic about a single game for six. straight. hours. the narcotic pancakes should help.

It is official, I am allergic to the gym. This is the third time I got the serious itchies/hives at the gym. I don't know if it is the cleaning stuff they use on the machines or if I am in fact allergic to running or what. This time was certainly the worst so I now have Benadryl stashed in my glove box and gym bag. Weird. I am seriously the queen of weird exercise-related things! Anyone else have exercise-related allergy issues?

Was going to head out for a ski with my Aunt this afternoon in Wisconsin, but my ski boots, warm winter clothes, and Christmas presents are all on their way to Manchester. I am still really hoping they meant New Hampshire instead of England :(

bad news, I passed the SoCRA exam

hope you found your clothes by now!

From Lulu Walls on Wed, Jan 02, 2013 at 12:52:30 from 166.137.100.38

So sorry to hear Jake. How did you find out? I am still hopeful that I didn't.

Any chance my room could be ready on Friday? If my insurance goes through and I get things covered at work and there are no huge snowstorms anywhere in the country and I find someone to drive me home after, I am going in for surgery this Friday - eek!!!
