Well, that totally sucks that you have to have surgery again. Yuck! How long until you can get back on your bike? Can you swim? Start hiking as soon as you can. Good luck!

From Andrea on Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 10:45:34 from 72.37.171.52

Get in all the exercise you can for the next week!!

Are you going to be in a hip brace?

From Lulu Walls on Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 11:20:03 from 155.100.217.244

I will be on crutches for 6 weeks, but think I can get on the stationary bike after about 2 weeks. Should be able to get back out on the road bike and hiking by mid-March. Perfect in time for Spring. No hip brace, just drugs.

I want to try and get all the excercise in that I can, but I keep being warned that I am probably making everything worse :( Also, I kind of wonder what the point is besides working my arms to get crutch ready.

From Jake K on Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 11:20:06 from 155.100.226.191

Hopefully not the Philippon brace!

My employees recently taught me to knit and it is actually a great passed time. You should try it.

Or we could set up a crutch running race between you and Jake. :)

From Lulu Walls on Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 11:53:48 from 155.100.212.135

That would have to be a backward crutch running race :)

I do need to step up my knitting. I can only knit squares and rectangles. It would be neat to get into hats or mittens :)

I think I could survive for a month or so on fruit smoothies with whole milk, honey, and flax seed. They're easy to digest and have a lot of calories. Kirkland brand ice cream might be a good option too.

Happily cruising at 10 degrees on the CPM. I guess everything went well with my surgery yesterday. I was really afraid that they were going to go in and find the joint totally messed up, but the cartilage and the FAI repair I had last year looks great. The only problem was the super lax ligaments and they were shortened with what looks like climbing rope. Since my joint was so loose and easily dislocated, my doc thinks all of my hip and knee issues were related to that. My hip flexor, quad, IT band were all trying to do the job of the ligaments to hold my hip in place and they haven't been doing that great a job.

I don't remember having so much pain with the last surgery. I had a really rough time post-op so they gave me a nerve block and I still have no sensation in my quad, which is kind of creepy. A huge thanks to my friends Nancy and Elliott for being there during my surgery and for Andrea and Jake for letting me crash at their house. More specifically thanks to Jake for offering me the healing powers of his wolf blanket and to Andrea for making me eat and take drugs. I seriously have the bestest friends in the world.

Hello, I am heading down to Salt Lake next week for a surgical consultation for my labral tear with impingement in my hip. I am excited to read about your recovery and progress! I am struggling with keeping a positive attitude so your strength and spirit are definitely an example to me.

My appointment is with Dr. Aoki at the University of Utah. Because I live in Idaho, I don't know any other surgeons that specialize in this type of arthroscopic hip surgery. Any advice or suggestion on a doc for a second opinion would be great. Thank you and happy recovery,

Shelley Bernstein

From Lulu Walls on Tue, Feb 05, 2013 at 12:47:54 from 155.100.9.11

Hi Shelley - I am sorry that you have also been dealing with this hip crap. Aoki did both my surgeries and I also saw Dr. West at TOSH for another opinion before each of my surgeries. As far as I know, Aoki and West are the only surgeons that do arthroscopic hip in this area. I went with Aoki because he had the most experience, but I did really like Dr. West too.

Feel free to send me a direct message if you want to talk more after you see Aoki. My only advice is to be up front with him on what your goals are after surgery. I don't think I was very clear with mine because he told me "I would do awesome," but apparently awesome didn't include running because now he is advising me to stop running :(

I won't lie. The recovery is a super long haul and to be honest I am not sure if I would do it if I had to do it all over again. I wish I would have found a great PT and exhausted all of my options before having the surgery.

AM: 10 awkward minutes on the home bike and hip drill. I keep getting this ca-chunk in my hip flexor and it scares me. The ca-chunk leaves my hip with a tightness that really makes me want to do the "runner's stretch." I can't do any type of hip extension for 3 more weeks, but I really, really want to stretch! It is like a bad itch that you can't scratch :(

PM: Hip drill. Having a bit more pain... not a real sharp pain, just a weird tightness.

Haven't yet decided if I am going to give up sugar (again) or dairy for Lent this year. Either way I am having pizza and cupcakes tonight!

AM: Hip drill. Forgot to do my hulas though.

PM: 10 minutes on the bike and hip stuff. Still can't turn the work bike around fast enough to turn the darned thing on. Now off to a massage followed by a Parks & Rec marathon. I have been neglecting the P&R since returning from the Jandrea convalescent home.

I got the nicest compliment from an FRBer yesterday. A fellow hip sufferer said that the admired by attitude and drive. If she only knew :) I think I have actually done quite well this first month. But honestly, having to go through this a second time is really tough and I know that the next month will be the toughest. It has been nearly 2 years since I have really been able to do the things that I enjoy so much it kinda breaks my heart. Wouldn't a sane person give up by now? I guess I just want to thank everyone for their kind words and put out an innocent plea to keep them coming because now is when I am going to need those lovely words of encouragement the most!

AM: Worst hip day yet! 1.5 hours at PT trying to get my right SI joint back into place. Surgery was cake compared to this experience. I guess an 11-hour work day on crutches really jacks your pelvis. I know I am doing too much right now, but I don't know what else I can do. Sugar fast is over. PT fed me watermelon sour patch things every time I cried. Pretty sure I had 42 of them. Now is not the time to give up sugar...

From here on out I have to put weight on the op side with every step even if it takes me a year to walk down the hall. No more hulas, no more weight shifting, and no more super crutching allowed!

Spinach is so healthy yet so potentially fatal at the same time.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 19:56:46 from 24.10.249.165

True that Jake. I actually think just about that exact thought every time I eat it.

I just finished either a really nutritious bowl of it, or what will make me violently ill in 48 hours. Spinach! You never know where it will take you!

I think a picture of Frank should be posted tomorrow. Most people on this blog haven't seen her, and are getting confused about the male name for a female bird. A phot would clear that up for everyone.

Jake - I would post a picture, but the only people who read my blog have met Frank in real life...

But I do have good news. The doctor just called me after rounding on all the animals and said she is eating, pooping all over the place and annoying everyone so I need to come pick her up ASAP. I guess she bounced back rather quickly :)

Since I am slowly weaning off the crutches I am forced to reflect on all the fun I have had these last 6 week. Having spent 3 of the last 15 months on crutches, there is a lot I am going to miss when I am healthy... some only slightly sarcastic.

  1. My armpits smelling like rubber.
  2. My crazy strong new triceps.
  3. People asking me why I don’t use one of those knee scooter things. Those are for ankles dumb @ss!
  4. My temporary disabled parking permit at the U.
  5. Eating standing up in the kitchen.
  6. Repeatedly falling up stairs.
  7. Having strangers at the gym tell me how bad @ss I am while working out on crutches.
  8. Feeling absolutely no guilt watching 10 Parks and Rec episodes in a row and re-reading all the Harry Potters.
  9. When I tell people I had hip surgery and they ask, “a hip replacement?” and then feeling awful about myself because I must look like I am 55.
  10. All the money I save at work by not frequenting the Starbucks because I can’t carry my own d@mn coffee.

AM: 10 minutes bike and morning hip drill. This nice weather is making me agitated. I want to go run up mountains. So I kind of thought that all the rest time on crutches would fix my left knee and plantar fascia issues, but I think it has made it worse not to mention the worsening of my right SI joint. Here is how I would rate my pain from highest to lowest: right SI joint, left plantar fascia, left knee, left (op) hip. I guess this means my hip is doing well seeing as the other issues are becoming more apparent.

PM: 35 minutes bike (10 minutes on Level 3!). Seeing as 2 weeks ago I couldn't pedal hard enough to turn the darned thing on, I will take that as serious progress.

PM2: Evening hip which now includes 4-way hip, splits, circles, scissors, and frog legs with the spider band, bridges, butt burners, clam shells, and a bunch of stretchy things.

PM: Evening hip drill. Of course as soon as I say the hip is feeling alright it totally freaks out. Was on my feet a little too much today and it got super painful so I left work early and went home and crawled into bed with my ice packs. PM: 50 minutes on the spin bike followed by 30 minutes of wandering around the outside of Sugar Daddy Park with Andrea.

10 weeks post-surgery today! Since I haven't been whining a ton lately, I must be doing okay. Last surgery I got to start running at 10 weeks and well look what happened so this time we are being way more cautious. I am going to give it a full four more weeks before I even try to take those first running steps, but I am happy to say that thoughts of running have started creeping in :)

AM: 70 minutes at SPIN class followed by 5 minutes on the ELLIPTICAL (it is a start!) and hip drill. I have been on the bike once and sometimes twice a day for the last 8 weeks so it feels GREAT to be officially permitted to do something else.

PM: 30 minute walk and evening hip.

AM: Bike at PT.

BAD news: Right SI joint was out again, which I am pretty sure it has been that way since last Friday. Hurt like a son of a to get back in.

GOOD news: Got to do normal squats today and I can do them! This is a HUGE indication for me that I might be fixed because I hadn't been able to comfortably get into that deep of position in the left hip since this whole thing started nearly 2 years ago. What a crazy feeling to be able to do something that you haven't been able to do without pain, instability, and serious discomfort for almost ever! I keep complaining to my PT that my hip feels weird and today he said it was probably because it is normal. Not a feeling I am used to.

Officially 12-weeks post-op, which is supposed to mean RUNNING and well I don't even feel close to giving it a try. Last surgery I was already up to running a mile and was getting back into Nordic skiing at the 12-week point and I was feeling great and hopeful. It is hard not to get discouraged since I was told that this recovery would be so much easier, but progress has been so slow and well walking still feels like crap.

And then I see something like this and think damn I am a wuss. Maybe I am not trying hard enough, maybe I get discouraged too easily. People recover from much worse things than I!

Please watch and vote!!!

I guess I want to formally dedicate myself to running again. I see my doc on May 1 and want to plan on getting the go ahead for running. I have 3 weeks and this is how I am going to do it.

  • Walk more and get on the elliptical more consistently.
  • Be religious with the clam shells, 1-legged bridges, squats, fish oil, vitamins, and vegetables.
  • Start reading running magazines again.
  • Use yoga and meditation to chill the freak out and practice un-guarding that hip.
  • Finally make an appointment and use my acupuncture groupon.
  • Buy a new pair of running shoes.

Considered hopping on the treadmill for 5 seconds of running just to see how it felt... My hips are feeling great so it is getting harder to resist the urge. The past few days I've felt very little pain and quite a bit more balanced in the hips, but unfortunately I have felt headachy, nauseous, and slightly more anxious than normal. My acupuncturist says it is because we have disrupted my energy patterns and it takes awhile to rearrange the Chi. I guess I have been harboring a lot in my hips. I would really like to scoff this all off as quackery, but this is the best my hips have felt in like 2 years!

PM: Rode from my house, up Memory Grove, through the U, and to the top of Little Mountain and back. Way hard, but I did it! 29 miles and 2200+ feet of climbing. I looked back and I wasn't biking up Emigration until I was about 5 months out of surgery last time. Since I am at the 3.5 month mark I am going to consider myself ahead of schedule!

First week I have had more outside biking miles than stationary miles - yay!

Easy ride on the Legacy wearing my new silly SI belt. I honestly felt great! The belt was a little weird to get used to but it really seemed to keep my pelvis stable and I had ZERO wonky low back weirdness. I felt like the belt really equalized me and that I was using both legs evenly on the bike.  Exciting!!!

Surgeon appointment in the morning and I am really hoping to get the ALL CLEAR for RUNNING!

Saw my hip surgeon this morning, everything looks good, and I have officially been released into the wild. I have been given the all clear for running and the full stretching of my tightened parts.

Just because I am allowed to run doesn't mean I am going to start yet. I am going to wait until I get a little more evened out strength wise and feel like my pelvis is more stable. But the fact that I can run if I want to is reason enough to celebrate!

PM: 30 minutes on the elliptical pretending I was running the whole time followed by a terrible Yin Yoga class. Since I blame yoga for getting me into this whole broken situation in the first place I need to stay away from anything other than restore classes from here on out!

Happy day!

Do some walk-jog's to start. You know, mostly walking with a minute or so of jogging thrown in every so often.

From Jake K on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 12:25:29 from 24.2.76.138

Yeah, like Rob said, first workout should be all-out 200s (around 800m pace) and walk the second half of each lap. You could even do all-out 150s and then walk for 250m to be more cautious. I would do these off a rolling start, just to be safe.

You will get one when I understand what it is you are telling me to do! I am unfamiliar with the rolling start. Does that mean someone has to push me? I assume I should do this barefoot as well?

From allie on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 13:02:21 from 161.38.221.168

rolling start means barrel rolling, like what you do when you are on fire.

i honestly cannot tell if any of this is sarcasm.

From Jake K on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 13:05:04 from 24.2.76.138

barefoot is fine, but for traction you may want to use a semi-permanent glue and attached some small spikes or screws to your forefeet.

this is all sarcastic.

From Lulu Walls on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 13:09:20 from 155.100.212.147

None of my comments have been sarcastic. I am still wondering how to rolling start myself and who this Amiee person is.

From Lulu Walls on Thu, May 02, 2013 at 11:11:25 from 155.100.212.147

Specifically I blame bending forward in Agnistambhasana (Fire Log Pose) for my hip issue. Unknown to me at the time I had the hip impingement issue, but it never bothered me until I got in this pose really deep in yoga and thought oh no this is really bad and my hip hurt like hell the next day. I blame that moment for all of my hip drama as well as switching from solely trail running to running 3-4 times a week on the road a few months prior :)

I'm so happy to read how well you are doing! I just had to comment on what you wrote about your injury stemming from yoga. It was in a yoga class that I first noticed my hip as well. I was getting into a lizard pose and I rolled out onto my pinky toe. As I sank into the stretch, I noticed a serious clunk in my hip. (if that makes sense?) It didn't hurt right then, but after that I started noticing the problem. I have shied away from yoga in my attempt at rehabbing my hip because I don't want to cause any more damage. I kept thinking that maybe I was just paranoid but maybe not?!

From Lulu Walls on Fri, May 03, 2013 at 00:15:10 from 166.70.240.95

You are totally not paranoid. I just googled lizard pose and yikes that is a bad pose for us FAI peeps! Pretty much someone with impingement issues should NEVER do deep hip poses in yoga or so I've been told. Unfortunately that is like 75% of yoga.

This is super dorky, but I played with a skeleton in PT so I could understand what type of movements would create impingement issues. I have pretty bad FAI in my non-corrected hip, but not many symptoms and I really want to keep it that way. Any activity or stretching with deep flexion is risky. I am a little worried about all the road biking I do, but I do need to do something!

I don't want to give up on yoga completely since I do get a benefit from the meditative aspect and some of the poses are helpful in evening me out. I just need to stick to what I know is safe and be comfortable skipping out on some poses.

Interesting article on the risks of yoga: http://www.npr.org/2012/02/07/146463156/the-risks-and-rewards-of-practicing-yoga

From shellberns on Fri, May 03, 2013 at 10:11:34 from 174.126.52.90

Thanks for the article. I could use some of the emotional benefits associated with yoga. This injury has made me feel a bit bipolar. I feel I am improving, but it has been very slow progress with many setbacks.

I am so encouraged when I read how well you are doing. Your experience has made me realize that even if I end up with surgery, it isn't the end of the world or running. Enjoy your weekend!

From Lulu Walls on Sun, May 05, 2013 at 20:51:50 from 166.70.240.95

I like to refer to it as FAI-induced Bipolar disorder. It is funny how similar our experiences have been. My PT actually reminds me to not let the highs get to high and the lows get to low :) This hip problem has been totally unpredictable to me. There are times I feel zero pain and then times I am so achy it hurts to walk and I haven't been able to predict when it will be good or bad.

I guess what gets me through is knowing that whatever discomfort I am feeling at the moment will probably go away after a hot bath and a night's sleep. At this point those 2 things cure most of my hip pain.

I really hope you don't have to have surgery, but it really isn't the end of the world and hopefully it will be worth it in the end!

4 x 30 seconds of RUNNING at PT.

After my first surgery I could not wait to get running again and after the last one I have almost no real desire to run to the point that my new PT made me. I just don't feel entirely healed and ready, but my strength and range of motion are nearly equal so everyone's telling me to go for it.

It felt fine, but my heart really isn't in it. What I am trying to figure out is where that lack of desire is coming from. I think part of it is FEAR, that I don't want to do anything to screw this hip up and have to go through yet another surgery. Part of it is ACCEPTANCE, that running may not be part of my life anymore and if I get to a point where I can bike and hike and ski I will be happy. And mostly, I think I am just so darned TIRED of doing clamshells. I am pretty sure a 2-year injury will drain some of the stoke out of even the most STOKED person :)

I honestly cannot even imagine how hard it must be to get back into running. Thinking about when I first started running and could barely run 5 min without dying makes me cringe. I know I am not helping but I guess my point is listen to your heart and don't force running if your heart isn't in it yet. Do what you enjoy and if running becomes something that you want to do then great. But until then just do whatever exercise makes you happy. :)

I need to come up for a hike.

From Neasts on Thu, May 09, 2013 at 13:03:06 from 75.169.56.70

Wise words from this Rachelle woman. :-) The fact that you CAN run a little bit, whether you want to or not, is great news!

From allie on Thu, May 09, 2013 at 18:18:27 from 97.126.223.200

this is all understandable -- you have been on a long road. i imagine it feels weird and scary to suddenly have the green light on running. as rachelle said -- don't force it. take your time. enjoy doing whatever you want to do with all that STOKE you have in many different areas.

and if you are ever feeling low on stoke...there is quite a bit in whiskey gelato.

I appreciated your comment about the spoiled millennials. Of course I know that the older generation has always grumbled about "kids these days!"

I wonder if their concerns are ever valid though? I run into a lot of very bright former students who are really struggling to find a place. I chalk it up to several factors - mostly adapting to our changing economy. That and a failure, despite being smart and accomplished, to cultivate a real passion that guides them.

Not most of the twenty-somethings I know on this blog though. They almost all seem to be thoroughly grounded, focused, and determined.

The Running Run-Down and New Plan

  • May 3 - First run. Six minutes on the Alter-G (no pain or issues after)
  • May 8 - Four x 30 seconds of running on the TM with a new PT followed by a bunch of manual stretching and massage. No pain with running, but didn't feel quite ready to be running.
  • May 9-14 - Crampy, awful pain in the hip flexor radiating in all directions. Psoas super tight up into my abdomen. Everything hurt. Stopped blogging, too crabby. Tried lots of ice, heat, slow cyling, light stretching, rolling and nothing helped
  • May 14 - Life saving massage! First massage I ever cried during. Psoas so tight and painful, tears, relief ughhhh.
  • May 15 - First pain free day in a week. Light yoga.
  • May 16 - Getting achy again, but okay. Light cycling.
  • May 17 - Manual stretching and massage at PT. My PT then tricked me onto the treadmill so he could evaluate my "walking" and then cranked it up so I would run. Ran three x 30 seconds or so and felt awesome! PT doesn't want to see me for a month since I am so obviously burned out on all the therapy. I am supposed to chill out and just start running two times a week. I know what I need to do at this point.
  • May 18 - Slight soreness/achiness from running, but went away as the day went on. I've been contemplating getting back into climbing, so I spent a few hours at the climbing gym, which I think was great for the hip!

Rode from me casa to the top of City Creek, Kona's first ride to Rotary Park. Pretty good ride considering I was going to turn around at the treatment plant.

Not feeling too horrible from yesterday's BIG run - just the same quad tightness, some moderate discomfort in both plantar fascia (more on the left), and lower leg wonkiness which could be due to my getting used to the Altras or the fact that that was my biggest run in 5 plus months post-surgical fun. I am guessing both were a factor.

Rode from HCI to the top of Millcreek and back, 3681 feet of climbing. I was probably not recovered from my 50 mile ride on Sunday and did not fuel well (was out of gu's so I just ate one Kind bar) on the 3 hour ride today. Nearly keeled over and cried when I had to bike back up to the U. Millcreek was so pretty it was worth it. I really wanted to make it to the top before cars are allowed up there.

5 months post surgery today. Seems like forever ago, yet not. I am definitely ahead of where I was last year at this time and as much as I have avoided saying it for fear that I will jinx something, I think I am fixed.

Evening ride up City Creek to the Water Treatment Plant. Big plans for tomorrow.

I CANNOT believe I can do this! Ran from work to home via the BST for 8.2 miles total with about 5 running. This used to be my favorite run and I haven't been able to do it in 2 whole years. I honestly didn't think I would ever be able to do it again. No complaints whatsoever with the left hip. Right SI joint is out and feels like shiz, but that will get better with time. First run without any of that quad tightness holy crap! Had my poles and Nathan back so my arms and upper back got worked more than my legs.

Seriously cannot believe I did this tonight!!! Especially with the heat, which is oddly not bothering me at all this summer. I think I am just so psyched I can do things that I would probably be out there if it was a 150 degrees and my skin was sizzling off.

So much for stoke dialing backge, quite the Mt. Aire disaster this evening. I forgot how freaking steep (1991 feet in 1.75 miles) that mountain is and let's just say my uphill time was only 3 minutes faster than my downhill time, but I can't remember if I turned my Garmin off during the 15 minutes I spent hiding behind some trees because a gigantic bull moose (complete with HUGE antlers) wouldn't stop staring at me from the middle of the trail.

Went up Big Water and turned onto the Great Western Trail and then got attacked my bees. My ankle was swelling up and it hurt like a son of a so I thought I better turn around because I didn't know how bad it would get since I have never actually been stung by a bee before.

By the time I got back down my ankle felt fine and I was crabby that I decided to go down so I just went back up. I took the new (to me) Red Pine Road and it thankfully dumped me back onto the Great Western Trail near the Wasatch Crest. I then bushwhacked to the top of what I thought was Murdock Peak, but when I got home and uploaded my Garmin it turns out I was nowhere near where I thought I was.

Ran the last three miles in a downpour and then iced my whole body in the stream since I was already drenched anyway. All in all absolutely freaking awesome day!

A down week after several building weeks always helps and is generally a good idea that most of us ignore... but that being said, I don't think you are progressing TOO quickly. I think what you are doing is just right. Its been a really smart progression!

The fact that you can stack back to back days like you just did and aren't broken means you have been doing things the right way. You've gotten yourself to a great place - back to somewhat normal and stoked up! :-)

From Fritz on Sun, Jul 21, 2013 at 21:43:43 from 67.177.4.64

I actually only backpack once every 15 years. But maybe bushwacking more often would keep it interesting, yet itchy.

I will admit this venture lowers the odds of switching to the full. That explains the 6 on the disaster scale.

10 Miles!!!

Longest run in 2 years post-hip bull-crap. Ran up Park City's Armstrong Trail across Mid-Mountain and down Spiro for almost 1800 feet of gain, not too shabby. I had 2 goals today, run 10 miles and do it in time to watch Fritz finish the Jupiter Peak Steeplechase with me getting a half hour start. I accomplished both :) 24 miles for the week - oh how I never thought I would get here! Yay to Steeplechase runners - you are so amazing!

Felt fine after the big 10-miler yesterday so I thought I would go up to Snowbird and run/hike to Hidden Peak and take the Tram down. Long story short I couldn't find the right trails and kept ending up in the parking lot so no Hidden Peak :)

Um exactly. Are you getting stoked for this weekend's parking lot run?

From Jake K on Mon, Aug 05, 2013 at 14:26:41 from 67.177.11.154

Technically I believe the PC 15K begins and ends right at the edge of the parking lot. Maybe I'll get in some bonus miles at Walmart after, too.

Weird day as in good weird. My hip had significantly flared up over the last 2 weeks, but now it feels like a normal hip with zero hip flexor tightness and zero general hip achiness, which is pretty incredible considering my longest in 2 years run this weekend. We're talking better than before surgery feeling... I guess lesson is, don't get too discouraged with these flare-ups and start planning some bigger and longer runs :)

PM: 5 miles on the BST from Morris Meadows. Felt great except for the 95 degrees thing. Please tell me all this heat training I am doing is going to pay off in some way.

After reading about Jake's heart rate monitor run today I decided to see what my heart rate was like during an easy run this evening and the results are, well... frightening!

PM1: At a little less than four miles at an easy (9:37 average) pace my heart rate averaged 157 beats/minute meaning I am either in the worst shape of my life or I am part hummingbird. I am thinking a little bit of both. Considering I couldn't run for nearly two years, I am essentially starting over from scratch so I shouldn't get too discouraged. Nowhere from her to go but up-ski!

PM2: Townie bar biking! I need to get back out on my bike!!!

From Amiee on Thu, Aug 08, 2013 at 20:48:29 from 166.70.240.95

Regardless, 157 is pretty high for a jog around the block. Granted my block is slightly uphill...

From Andrea on Thu, Aug 08, 2013 at 20:51:39 from 67.177.11.154

Isn't there something about the smaller you are, the higher your heart rate is? :)

From Jake K on Thu, Aug 08, 2013 at 20:53:17 from 67.177.11.154

Hummingbirds are awesome, by the way. One of the cooler birds besides penguins.

Backward flight is a frequently used transient flight behavior among members of the species-rich hummingbird family (Trochilidae) when retreating from flowers, and is known from a variety of other avian and hexapod taxa, but the biomechanics of this intriguing locomotor mode have not been described. We measured rates of oxygen uptake (V(O2)) and flight kinematics of Anna's hummingbirds, Calypte anna (Lesson), within a wind tunnel using mask respirometry and high-speed videography, respectively, during backward, forward and hovering flight. We unexpectedly found that in sustained backward flight is similar to that in forward flight at equivalent airspeed, and is about 20% lower than hovering V(O2). For a bird that was measured throughout a range of backward airspeeds up to a speed of 4.5 m s(-1), the power curve resembled that of forward flight at equivalent airspeeds. Backward flight was facilitated by steep body angles coupled with substantial head flexion, and was also characterized by a higher wingbeat frequency, a flat stroke plane angle relative to horizontal, a high stroke plane angle relative to the longitudinal body axis, a high ratio of maximum:minimum wing positional angle, and a high upstroke:downstroke duration ratio. Because of the convergent evolution of hummingbird and some hexapod flight styles, flying insects may employ similar kinematics while engaged in backward flight, for example during station keeping or load lifting. We propose that backward flight behavior in retreat from flowers, together with other anatomical, physiological, morphological and behavioral adaptations, enables hummingbirds to maintain strictly aerial nectarivory.

Running the Park City Trail 15K in the morning. I know a 15K probably doesn't sound like much to all you crazy runner peeps, but to me it is HUGE. It is my first real race in 2+ years and for a good year or so of that I really didn't think I would ever be able to run again. I don't mean to sound overdramatic, but that is the truth. I am nervous for so many reasons and if I make it to the finish I am pretty sure I am going to bawl my eyes out.

Before the race I demanded three hugs from Andrea, I really wanted more, but I was afraid to ask. My goal was to average 10-minute pace, which I was pretty nervous about. I started with the 9-10 minute peeps, but quickly realized that I was a little overly stoked for that pace.

First 2 miles were at 8:30 pace and I felt great so I changed my goal and just went for it and didn't get passed once after mile 2. I ran up a hill, bombed the downhill, and it was so much fun!!! SO HAPPY - oh my gosh! Then brunch, pool time, and great company - exactly what I needed! I have been annoying everyone today, by bursting out, "I CAN'T BELIEVE I CAN RUN, LIKE FOR REALS RUN" at least every 15 minutes.

I am so absolutely thrilled to be where I am at right now and enjoying every minute of it. Not to get all sappy, but I am really grateful for all of the support I had from fellow bloggers through this whole recovery ordeal. I cannot thank both Andrea and Jake enough for taking care of me after my surgery, providing so many kind words, and giving me HUGE hugs today. Okay going to cry now :)

STOKE!!!

I think all this running is turning me into a wuss! Needed to feel strong so I got back on my bike and went for a 90 minute cruise on the Legacy. To think I biked like 70 days in a row this Spring when I couldn't do anything else and now I haven't been for a ride in over a month.

At this point I can't physically run hard enough to get the kind of workout I get on the bike and I really, really need to prioritize the cross-training which I have been neglecting since I can FINALLY run. Operation back to yoga and cycling has been a success this week so I am on the right path!

From Amiee on Fri, Aug 23, 2013 at 11:57:50 from 155.98.164.38

I think it looks way scarier than it is. It is only 1,600 feet of climbing. Still vomit-worthy, but not too bad. Thanks :)

From Neasts on Fri, Aug 23, 2013 at 13:30:06 from 71.32.227.124

I see that hill every day and yes, vomit-worthy! Still, it won't be too bad with good pacing. Over half of that climbing is all in the last (4th) mile of the climb. I didn't realize that you guys will start at 6:00, which means no headlights needed and you WILL see the hill! In case I don't see you in the a.m. then, I hope you go have a great time and enjoy all of the ups and downs!

Two little words I never thought I would hear: first woman :)

The Sapper Joe was the most fun race ever!!! Mostly because the start line was wedged between two tanks and some men in uniform shot off a cannon at the start, which really got me moving! The first few miles were totally in the dark and I kept falling off the road although the cleverly placed glow sticks kept us on track.

I sort of wish I the sun hadn't come up because it was illuminating what looked like a near vertical wall straight ahead of me. PLEASE don't let that be the way, which of course meant that it was the way. This was the absolutely most ridiculous uphill ever!!! The only thing I can think to compare it to is the climb up Black Mountain, but SERIOUSLY 250 feet in a quarter mile?!? It was so steep that I almost had to use my hands to keep from tipping over backwards and that hill just kept going and going for a mile or more.

Finally after four miles and well over 2000 feet of gain, I got to some downhill which at first felt terrible since my quads were burning so badly I thought there was no way I could kick it in to high gear to make it back down to all those soldiers. With the aid station in sight, I finally got my legs moving and it was at that point that I found out that there weren't any gals in front of me. So I grabbed some pretzels and some water and hauled @ss down to the finish. I ran miles 7, 8, and 9 just under a 7 minute pace which is a gosh darned miracle for me! We are talking SERIOUS miracle!

So much fun! Best part was my super awesome prize, a water bottle with a TANK on it! Not to mention, race medals were dog tags with... you guessed it a TANK on it. Screw birds, put a TANK on it is my new favorite saying!

I have to admit that I am still feeling pretty stoked after the Sapper Joe 15K last weekend. Now that I am feeling great it is hard for me to imagine that I couldn't run for more than 30 seconds at a time 3 months ago (first time I ran this year was on May 8, 2013) and the first time I ran a continuous mile was just June 10, 2013. I want to take this moment to toot my own damn horn, maaaaannnnnnn was this a long hau! I am absolutely thrilled to be out doing things!!! Below is the world's slowest return to running plan, but I really think I did it right this time (May1-3 ranged from .05 to .5 miles/week :). Onward!

Woke up early form the back of Rubes (my car) in Kane Creek Canyon to weird didgeridoo type sounds coming out of Hunter Canyon, ate an entire melon while paying homage to the Birthing Rock, and then ran up the Amasa Back Trail.  Overshot the turn off on the Jackson Trail because the trail sign was on the ground in the bushes, but I found it on my way back down.

The Jackson Trail is one of the neatest running trails in Moab and I have never see a soul on it. The single-track trail hugs a cliff above the Colorado and the views and drop-offs are really dramatic! One little trip could leave you tumbling a thousand feet down to the river below and Kane Creek can be flooded and difficult to cross at the bottom so maybe that is why people avoid the trail! Thankfully the Creek was only waist deep and it felt goooood at the end of the run. It is odly humid in Moab today - 50%, weird!

PM: 2-mile hike in my flip-flops to the Mill Creek swimming hole for bathing :)

Chill day in the mountains...

AM: 6.5 miles on the Colorado Trail from Molas Pass. Most of the run/trudge was over 11,000 feet and I certainly felt it!

PM: 1 x 400 on the Silverton town track (elevation ~9,300 feet) and FIRST TRACK "WORKOUT" EVER. I just wanted to beat James' estimate of 97 seconds for my first 400 and I did it in 87 seconds, so yay! Spent the evening helping a friend prep for the Wasatch 100. He is making all of his own food using this Feed Zone Portables book - neat idea! He is a 5th grade teacher and got a card today from one of his students that included a GU and the following quote: "100 miles is really not that far to run." ~Karl Meltzer. AM: Paced Kevin Q from Lamb's to Brighton, from 10pm to 6:30 am. Can't remember the last time I was up for 28 hours straight, kinda fun! Took a really long time so I am counting all those miles because it was hard and I had to be happy the whole time! Climbed 6300 feet, which is just a small pecentage of the entire Wasatch 100. So happy he was able to finish the race, an incredible feat with all that heat!

Can't hardly wait for the Peruvian Downhill this afternoon. Going to wear my roller shoes...

PM: Thought it would be pretty stupid to run the Peruvian after 22 miles through the night and 2 hours of sleep, but then all the coffee kicked in and I was overly deliriously stoked! It ended up being worth it even if I can't walk for a few days since I won a FREE NIGHT at the Peruvian Lodge, which is going to be awesome come ski season - yay!

I had planned to run the first mile as fast as I could and then meet up with Jake and Abby. The first mile was 5:58 (ha, ha, ha!) and then I physically couldn't slow down due to gravity and inertia aka ridiculous downhill and the next one came in at 6:08. Around mile 4 this honest downhill course turned into an adventure race with speeding cars, torrential down pours, and crazy lightening strikes - so, so very frightening, I cannot believe they didn't stop traffic! Was so happy to be finished! Then an absolutely wonderful evening with great food, lots of fun with FRB-ers, and SLEEP!

I think my 2 runs today balanced each other out so I am pretty sure I wil be okay.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Ummm... that was SO HARD! Was lying oh so comfortably in bed this morning wondering which race would be easier, the Park City Trail Half or the Flat as a Pancake 5K. I opted for a half hour more of sleep and didn't make my final decision until I got on I-80. I got to the start of the Park City Trail half with 5 minutes to spare and thankfully they had pushed back the start 15 minutes. It was a lovely 52 degrees and foggy as crap, but at least the rain hadn't started yet.

The first mile was rough, the mud was deep, the shoes were heavy, and the stokemeter wasn't even registering -  I didn't know how I could possibly continue through this for 13 plus miles. Thankfully the trail was slightly more dry after the first few miles, but ughhh my legs never felt like they didn't have 10 pounds of something weighing them down. This was the closest I have ever felt to leg cramping-ness, my legs just didn't want to move, they just really, really wanted to be sitting in a hot tub. Seriously, I was barely breathing hard and my legs were like heck no we're not going to go anywhere. My diet has been pretty crappy this week and I hadn't run much so I was wondering if that is why my legs felt like DEATH. Perhaps there is a little residual fatigue in the legs after last weekend's Wasatch/Peruvian ridiculousness :)

Anyways... I finished just short of my goal of under 2 hours, but the course was a half mile long (course was re-routed due to life sucking mud holes) so I say GOAL ACCOMPLISHED! I am feeling pretty confident that I can make my sub 1:42:32 half marathon goal in Moab next month since there will be no rocks, mud puddles, slippery slides, 1000 feet of elevation gain, residual Peruvian-nes and well... trails :) Won some pretty nifty Pearl Izumi arm warmers, which would have perfect for today! Pretty exciting stuff!

Oh and I haven't talked about this in a while because I don't think about it much anymore, but the hip is as good as new!  Seven months out from the second surgery this week and couldn't be happier with it :)

I am looking for ADVICE! I signed up to run a half marathon 5 weeks from today and since I have never followed a training plan, or well any kind of plan ever I don't really know what to do. I really want to beat my one and only (road) half marathon (Bryce Canyon 2011) time mostly as a fun challenge to myself, but also because of spite :) I had lots of ortho peeps tell me I should never run again after my hip injury and that I would never be as good as new and well darn it I feel better than new so I want to prove it! Yeah, I recognize that Bryce Canyon is a way easier course than The Other Half and that my goal may be a longshot, but whatever I want to go for it!

So what I am wondering... (1) How do you figure out what kind of pace you are capable of when your running has been all over the place? I am thinking I should maybe run a 5K in the upcoming weeks to gauge my fitness. I have no idea. (2) What kind of runs should I incoporate into my week? Up until now I just run when and as far and as hard as I feel like.

AM: 2 hour ride on the Legacy from me casa.

PM: Core, glutes, and feets. Operation back to PT starts today!

Go run 3-4 miles @ LP at like 8:00 pace and see how that feels. I think you're well within grasp of beating that Bryce time. Just keep running longer on the weekends and get in one faster effort midweek, around your goal race pace. Do that consistently for a month and it'll be as sweet as high fructose corn syrup.

as for the faster efforts midweek -- a fun way to get your legs moving faster (at least in the beginning when you are still figuring out what "faster" means for you personally) -- 10x1 minute on/offs, and you can increase/decrease that to as many reps as you want. i find that's a good way for me to get my body adjusted to harder efforts -- just a little at a time until i am more comfortable pressing the gas for longer.

Sat in a car for 3 hours, got blasted in the eyes with sand for a good 2 hours, and then saw the Lumineers play 5 songs before the concert was called due to wind?!?!?!?

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever go to a show at the Saltair!!! Ever!

The Saltair should only be used for windy X K's.

Tough year for weather at Saltair events.

I don't even know how I used to go to concerts when I was younger. I guess it was because iPads hadn't been invented yet and I didn't know any better. So much easier just to lay on the floor and hit the Pandora button.

Going to go for a baby run this afternoon and if I feel good I am going to regsiter for the Dugway Isolation Run happening tomorrow. I just can't resist another run through otherwise off-limits terrain and exploding land mines.

PM: Ha! I was dreaming this morning! 2.5 mile run up City Creek followed by a 1.5 mile limp of shame home. Bummer.

Here's the deal:

  • Right hip pain (non-op side) in the front/side - not groin pain or bursitis, TFL possibly?
  • Onset of sharp pain last Thursday. SI joint had been out for weeks prior so the only pain I had been having was right lower back and glute. Thought new pain was related to brutal SI adjustment at PT last Wednesday, but hasn't gone away.
  • Pain is sharp on impact during walking or running. Nearly non-existent on uphills, but borderline excrutiating on downhills. No discomfort with sitting, only with impact.
  • Adductor and piriformis are very tight and I have been stretching and rolling twice a day.
  • I have positive impingement signs in the right hip, but good internal rotation so my PT doesn't think it is an FAI flare-up (yes, I have FAI in the right hip too)

The Plan:

  • I have made appointments with both my sports med doc and hip surgeon and I am getting a massage this Sunday and a gait analysis next week and I just opened a bottle of wine (Thanks Allie :)
  • No running until no pain with walking. Find cross-training that doesn't hurt.
  • Keep up PT exercises since none of them seem to be aggrevating the problem.
  • Ice, ice, ice and roll and stretch a ton!
  • Do not freak out! Trust that this is going to go away soon and you are not going to have to have another hip surgery so help me ughhhh! Be happy with those few months of running you had :)

Any ideas on what the cause of this pain is? I think it has to be related to some sort of pelvic instability related to my SI joint dysfunction on the right side. I am 8 months out of surgery on the left hip and would say I am at about 95% - only problem is the occasional hip flexor tightness but whoopie do. Please, please don't be FAI issues!!!!!!!!

From Penny on Sun, Sep 29, 2013 at 19:58:44 from 66.65.174.203

Uggghhh, now reading through this, I see what you mean about it being similar.

Mine hurts on impact too; and from what I know, push-off pain tends to be muscular, whereas impact pain tends to be structural. I hate saying this (because I hate thinking about it for myself) but you probably need to ask for an MRI, to check for stress fractures in your hip; particularly the femoral neck.

Also, some advice a friend gave me: dont waste your rest days. If it is serious, it will need time to heal, and any aggressive XT could prolong that process. So until you know what it is, I would find something (I have started swimming ugh - hate it) that gives you NO discomfort or pain.

Can't put much weight on the right leg this morning without a whole lot of pain. Not really sure what I should do or what is going on with it, but I am going to stay off it as much as possible. Got my crutches out of the closet. Seriously?

It was a good thing I wasn't running the Dugway race because I wouldn't have been able to get out of my driveway this morning anyway. The apartment building across the street from me went up in flames, we are talking serious flames! One of the scarriest things I have ever seen, I could feel the heat in my living room. Just glad no one was hurt.

So much for not freaking out...

Just had a 90 minute massage to try and loosen up my right hip (see new hip drama) and well we couldn't find anything tight or any knots or trigger points that are causing the pain. And then I still had the sharp pain upon standing. WTF? Ibuprofen is not doing a thing, red wine is not doing a thing, and the only thing that works is not putting any pressure on the darned thing.

Seeing as I can't get into my hip doc for five more weeks, I am just going to show up at the ortho center tomorrow morning and not leave until someone will see me!

From Neasts on Sun, Sep 29, 2013 at 22:16:08 from 75.169.60.81

Crap, crap, crap Amiee! I just read about the hip drama. SO crazy that it would go from feeling good to being so painful so quickly. I like Jake's idea of cookies. :-) It looks like events were conspiring to keep you far away from Dugway, but you would have loved it. It also would've been murder on your hip (think Sapper Joe on a mountain bike trail). Just put it on your calendar for next year because that desert is a-callin'. Here's hoping that it's just a phantom pain, or one that can be quickly healed up.

From Amiee on Tue, Oct 01, 2013 at 16:26:32 from 64.134.228.222

Saw a doc today and just had the MRI. PT and doc don't think it is FAI issues, which is great although there is certainly something wrong because walking still blows! I really think it is a new manifestation of my SI dysfunction, but we wanted to do the imaging anyways just to rule out a stress fracture or labrum issues. I am trying to enjoy the down time :)

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.000.000.00

MRI was neither good nor bad. No stress fracture or major FAI-ness, but it did show a labral tear and confirmed the fact that I have old lady arthritic hips.

I really, really think the pain I have been having is coming from my SI joint dysfunction rather than the hip itself so I think we are going to keep trying to manipulate the crap out of it and do some injections to confirm that is it my SI joint and go from there.

Let's just say I am happy with the two months of fun I had this summer and each run I went on I was absolutely stoked because that was one more run that I never thought I would have! Here's to hoping something is going to pop in some joint somewhere soon and I will be back on my merry way :)

I just want to chill.’ We all have self-doubt. You don’t deny it but you also don’t capitulate to it. You embrace it. You respond to it. You rise above it. … I don’t know how I’m going to come back from this injury. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll be horses—.” He pauses, as if envisioning himself as an eighth man. “Then again, maybe I won’t, because no matter what, my belief is that I’m going to figure it out. Snuck out of work for a bit this afternoon for a ride up Emigration in the lovely fall weather. Glad I have stopped feeling sorry for myself and am getting back out there even if it is on a bike. I have three weeks to get back in some sort of shape and build lots of muscles because apparently the more muscle you have the greater the chance it won't all melt away!

Saw my hip surgeon today and yup, surgery is on and I CANNOT wait to get it over with. Funny visit though since he didn't seem to remember communicating with me over email and setting up my surgery so when he examined me and looked at my images he thought surgery was the best next step and then I was able to surpirse him with the fact that I was indeed on his schedule in 2 weeks. I feel good about our plan and what we have learned with my other hip and happy that he didn't think my cartilage was in as rough of shape as the radiologist thought. To quote the neurosurgeon I work with, "Radiologists are idiots!" Lots to do these next few weeks!

My next 6 months, but substitute "wolf" for "cotton."

Ummm... so, I hope the worst is behind me. This surgery sucked!!! Hip is fine, but I CLEARLY cannot handle my drugs! Nothing but ice and ibuprofen from here on out!

Surgery went well last Thursday and my surgeon said that this hip looked way better than the other had, which is good news. Although this does puzzle me a little since this hip hurt way worse than the other and was way more limiting. I guess what I have learned from all these stupid hip surgeries is that none of this makes any sense.

Official word is I only needed a femoroplasty (about 5.5 mm of bone removed from my femoral head to eliminate CAM impingment) and a capsular repair (tightening of the iliofemoral ligament to reduce the chance of hip insability that plagued me after the FAI repair I had on the other side). No acetabuloplasty (fix for pincer-type impingment), labral repair, or iliopsoas tendon release which was all done in the left hip in December of 2011. This recovery should be easy peasy!

This whole hip experience has been so perplexing to me because it seemed like it went from you finally running so freely and so well to hobbled so quickly. I'm glad you got in as quickly as possible to get it fixed, and hopefully since it wasn't as bad as the other you will rehab that much quicker. And yes, pain meds are horrid.

From Amiee on Thu, Nov 21, 2013 at 21:49:01 from 166.70.240.95

@Jake Ha! Frank has been passed out cold recovering since returning home. I will remember this surgery as the snakes in the corner, melting walls, milk of magnesia terror, anti-emitic coma, swear they didn't do anything to my hip because I feel like I could walk WTF? surgery.

@Allie Cute!

@Neasts Truth is that hip has been bothering me off and on for years and I think it was sent over the edge with my happy return to running. I knew that I would eventually need the other hip fixed as well since I had serious impingement issues on both sides and I may have jumped the gun with this surgery a little, but I really wanted to put this all behind me. And I am thinking this hip is going to rehab super quickly :)

Back home and officially on the ups and ups-ies! I've already maxed out my CPM machine and am anxious to start physical therapy (not for 8 more days, grrrr). No nasty pain killers since Tuesday night and the pain is nearly nonexistent with ibuprofen and my ice machine.

I would not have made it through another stupid surgery without my crazy FRB-er friends. Thanks to Fritz for being there during my surgery and keeping my ice machine fully loaded and the Lortabs coming the first night. Thanks to Andrea for talking me through my anti-nausea patch removal hallucinating stupor, for force feeds, and for letting Frank do laps around her living room even though she hates her :) Thanks to Jake for providing endless running banter and STOKE and I am especially thankful to Allie for yet again providing me with booze-laden gelato. I have the best friends!

So I have been doing a lot of thinking since well... I am pretty much glued to my CPM machine and have had an awful lot of emotions surfacing some positive, but mostly not so positive. I keep thinking who the hell returns to running after THREE hip surgeries? For some reason two seemed doable, but this third one is just super annoying.

But then I started goggling running after hip surgeries and I am surprised on the number of people running after total hip replacements, there is even one guy that has run a few 50Ks and attempting a hundred next month only 7 months after a replacement. So my takeaway message... who returns to running after THREE hip surgeries? Well there seems to be no reason I cannot, so I am happy to say that THIS GAL will be back running in about three months - yippy!

Went on a field trip this afternoon to the Uintahs since I thought getting out of the house would do my a world of good. I thought I could handle a couple hours in the car which I was almost able to do. The sun was out and the trees were pretty all covered in snow. I crutched around a bit in the snow with Teddy the dog :)

10 days out from hip scope number 3 and I would have to say I am feeling the best after this one. Maybe it is because of all my experience with this or maybe it is because they forgot to fix anything when they were in there, it seriously feels like I could walk!

I would be going back to work tomorrow if I was following the same plan as the last two surgeries, but I am taking the whole week off. Going to milk this one as long as I can :)

Only complaints are with my ankle (from traction probably), tight calf, and low back (from sitting on my bum). I just want to be able to stretch things! The hip only has a dull ache, which I swear would go away if I could stetch... I am sleeping fine and often and keeping entertained. I like Snap Chats :)

Since this hip isn't as bad as the other, you should be back at it when it warms up and you'll be unstoppable. Also, with both hips fixed, you won't have the looming burden of another hip scope. I have felt super lethargic and just wiped these past few days which I attributed to being pathetically depressed and well after spending last night battling a 103+ degree fever, I think I am sick. So weak and sick that I can barely crutch to the kitchen. I ate a GU for lunch because I know I need the calories, but I don't have the energy to cook up anything else. My fever finally broke this afternoon after 48 hours of sweaty, achy nonesense so I ventured out of the house (i.e. bed) for the first time in 2 days.  After clearing all the snow off my car with a crutch, I drove straight to my new favorite coffee shop, the Starbucks drive-thru, and then drove to all my favorite BST trailheads (Terrace Hills, Morris Meadow, City Creek, and even Ensign Peak) to look at the purdy snow. I miss running in the snow, it has been THREE YEARS of this winter broken bull crap and the trails looked so lovely. Ha! We will see about that. I am whining on this blog because I want a record of my recovery in case there are problems down the road. I almost hope nobody reads this because I am at my most pathetic state. Crutches + FLU + icy/snowy yuck = no bueno.

Anyway... day 5 of the FLU. Went to the doc to get something to help my cough which of course does nothing for my cough and leaves me dry heaving most the night.

My cough is so hard and deep that it is really hurting my groin area, I feel like I really pulled or yanked something bad. Damn I hate how everything is connected. I thought twerking was a new word for twittering!

Lion King came out in 1994!!! That's not popular culture. I bet most modern kids have never heard of it.

I'm still not sure what a Miley Cirus is.

PM: 10 minutes bike arm weights routine.

I did a little run today in a big place across one of your CR segments. Soon it will be you out there again. Great job on the walk!

First day no crutches! Best Christmas present ever. Please hold the Tiny Tim jokes. Merry Christmas all!

5 minutes on my Dad's bike on zero degree "sun" porch watching bald eagles pluck ducks out of the river for Christmas dinner. For reals!

I remember when seeing a bald eagle was a huge deal and now there is a crew of 10 eagles chilling in my parents hood. I saw SEVEN of them on Christmas morning.

Seven bald eagles... that's a patriotic way to kick off Christmas.

I hope someday the wolf population gets back to that level. Where you could be roaming around a small town and just see one sitting in someone's driveway.

Ha ha! I have a new fear of wolves and well... chairlifts too. My Dad made me watch this film on Christmas night. Should give avalanche sharks some competition.

Spoiler Alert: They all get eaten by wolves.

We tried to watch that movie when it first came out... I think we made it through about 15 minutes before the horrendous acting and dialogue forced us to pull the plug on it. Was it a happy ending?

AM: 20 minutes bike at my mom's gym which used to be a Thai/Laotian restaurant that I worked at the summer after my first year in college. I wanted to get a job waiting tables, but couldn't find one because everyone wanted someone with experience so when I saw a "Help Wanted" sign at Kham Orient I went in and asked for an application in which the owner replied, "Go home, put white shirt black pants on, come back!" And that I did and waited my first tables a few hours later with absolutely no training nor knowledge of Asian food whatsoever. That summer I learned more about people and culture and pretty much everything than any summer ever!

AM: 25 minutes bike and hip PT routine. Now that I am finally 6 weeks post-op I can add a little resistance to the bike. Stoke.

Deja Vu minus the watermelon sour patches. SI joint is JACKED with a capital JACKED!

AM: Hip drill.

PM: Royal SI beating at PT. Low back/SI joint has been getting progressively more painful since ditching the crutches and is essentially stuck. My surgeon said that FAI surgery can sometimes fix a wonky SI joint and oh how I hope that is the case for me! Just sucks because the hip feels fine compared to the low back!

Lunging hip flexor stretch, 1/2 kneeling sidebending stretch, prayer stretch, CLAM SHELLS, and L-sprine rolly things added to PT routine already consisting of hip circles, scissors, and splits with band, baby bridges now with band, hip abductor, adductor and leg lifts, and glute sets. I need to make a chart!
