Happy 2014! Can you believe it?

I have about 100 resolutions, but the two I would like to share are 1) to write more and be less shy about sharing and 2) use a reusable coffee mug at all times, no more paper cups.

Granted 2013 was sandwiched on both sides with hip surgeries and crap, the meat (and by meat on mean cheese) was pretty good. Considering I was on crutches for OVER 3 MONTHS of 2013, I think I did alright :)

Just a few of my 2013 highlights...

AM: Morning hip.

PM: Evening hip plus 30 minutes bike and 10 minutes arm bike.

That's like 2 plus hours of exercise without breaking a sweat!

7 weeks down, 5 more to go! Hip is feeling fab, SI is feeling bad.

I just looked back on my posts and well I am having way less pain at this point than my previous 2 surgeries and I am walking a whole week earlier than last time. I have none of the horrible hip flexor cramping pain I remember from the other surgeries, only tightness which I know will resolve once I am allowed to stretch more agressively. I have been holding off on saying this... but the pre-surgical pain I had in the front of my hip is GONE. Let's hope it stays that way!!!

Sounds like you were doing the exact same thing as us yesterday!

Our tentative plans:

April/May - Canyonlands

June/July - Yosemite hiking/backpacking

Late July - Zion

August/Sept - Wind Rivers

We should coordinate :) It would be so fun to have group adventures!

@Allie - You can seriously get picked up by some trolley bus from the train station and get dropped off on the trail - how cool is that?

@Andrea - You're going to want to switch the Winds to July because there will be MULES!

They will be gone if it is a low snow year and they are gone by the time you get to the higher elevations anyway.

Just walked through Temple Square with my CHEESEHEAD on, not really but that would have been cool! Instead it stayed in my backpack while my head froze and I walked POINT SIX miles to the Starbucks down the street. That was pretty much my first WALK hence the POINT SIX exclamation. Yesterday I was thinking, I am going to be running in like 2 weeks and now I am thinking I just want to lay down.

I know my blog is super boring right now (bike, bike, bike, vomit) and I wonder if people read it and think, why dosen't this girl just take up knitting and give up?

The long-awaited before and after shot. The shot on the left was taken several years ago so apparently the cam lesion was quite a bit thicker from all that bone banging the last few years. I had 5.5 mms of bone removed, which I guess is a lot in a joint. The difference is quite dramatic as I can already tell on the bike. The OTHER SIDE looked a little more dramatic.

Trying to make my blog un-boring... Those screws used to poke through my skin before I had them removed. It is fun having access too all my medical info :)

AM: 10 minutes bike at PT and 15 minutes supervised walking. I am having a lot of funky low back crap. PT thinks my pelvis is being pulled off kilter by my wicked tight hip flexors. Aoki said he was very agressive with the capsular repair (tightening of hip stabalizers after dislocating my hip during surgery), but I am starting to think he went a little too tight! So so tight!

Eeeek! My PT told me almost exactly the same about my tight hip flexor pulling the SI joint out. It sounds like your recovery is going pretty well. Good luck stretching it out!

From Amiee on Mon, Jan 13, 2014 at 16:45:07 from 155.98.164.38

Granted my hip flexor is pretty tight on the SI problematic side, I still find it a lousy explanation of why my back is so jacked. I always worry that there is something else wrong. How has your SI been?

From shellberns on Tue, Jan 14, 2014 at 16:57:07 from 174.126.50.17

My SI does well for a few weeks, even a month and then it will start giving me problems. Each time, PT says it's the hip flexors and it takes another few visits to keep SI in place and for hip flexors to calm down. I am getting better at anticipating the flares but it's still frustrating. Lower back is where I hurt when my SI is out-usually the first indication. I hope you feel better!

Inspiring words by Megan Arbogast: "I feel like I am setting an example for aging runners, especially for women, and I hope I’m inspiring them to keep moving. I’m glad I can make a mark, but what I really want to be remembered for is being a good, nice, kindhearted person, who happens to be a pretty decent runner. At the end of the day, no one but me really cares or remembers my places, times, and PRs, but they will remember my character, so it had better be good!"

20 minutes easy bike and no PT tonight. Something has flared up and I don't know what. Not sure if I overdid it in spin class yesterday or the new captain morgans grrrrrr. Pain is weird and I can't pinpoint it. Sort of electrical in nature, random and shooting, starting in my low back and radiating down the outside of my leg.

I don't think I am quite ready to start running yet, I really want to wait until my right glute starts firing properly, my core gets a little stronger, and I have most my muscle imbalances fixed. I just needed to know it was possible and that my hip can withstand the impact, which it nicely did without pain yippie skip! I just did this to help the motivation. Ummm so I totally bonked or had a freak-out 40 minutes into Spin class. I was working pretty hard and after the 2nd speed workout dealie thing I couldn't get my legs moving and I felt all light-headed and the only thing I wanted to do was bolt out of class, which I did with wibbly wobbly legs.

Can you bonk after only 40 minutes? Do people eat before morning workouts? This has never happened to me before, but I had a 15 hour workday yesterday, haven't been sleeping more than 6 hours/night the past week, and hadn't really had anything to eat after 4pm yesterday so I am guessing that is what did it.

I just need to hold on until March 14th! I am in the middle of moving and changing jobs which means working 2.5 jobs at the moment and sleeping and eating like crap. I am so not hardcore!

Typically you wouldn't bonk after 40 minutes but you already answered your own question because it wasn't a 40 minute effort... working 15 hours, not sleeping, not eating... that all adds up and puts a ton of stress on the body!

Just hold on for one more day!

Progress!!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
1.000.001.00

15 minutes of analyzing my walking-ness at PT. Other than needing to extend my right hip back a tad, I am walking darned near normal. AND THEN... 10 minutes of RUNNING with walk breaks. Again, need to work on my right hip extension. When I try to extend more I lose my pelvic stability, but the extension should come with time though and dedicated hip flexor stretching. At this point I think it is more important to keep my pelvis stable than to have full hip extension.

We then came up with a nice hip maintenance and core exercise plan and I said g'bye to my PT and all the clinic staff. I held back my tears until I get into my car and then bawled my eyes out. It has been one long haul you could say. I have been going to that clinic almost weekly for two and a half years prehabbing and rehabbing three hip surgeries and assorted resulting ailments and I am honest to gosh going to miss all those peeps :(  I am so grateful for their support and awesomeness!

As of today (sitting, standing, AND running):

Zero pain in left hip.

Zero pain in right hip.

Nearly zero pain in low back/SI joint.

I haven't blogged in a bit. Couple of reasons 1) Superstitious: my hips went to hell a month or so after joining the blog back in 2011 and I have had enough of that crap. 2) I want to run for the pure joy of it and for me without any need for external approval. 3) I have been having a blast traveling these last few weeks. 4) I no longer want to be defined as hip surgery girl. 5) I have no OCD tendancies :)

That being said. I ran 10 miles in the desert last week no problem which is a good 5 weeks after starting to run again - crazy crazersons! And then I backpacked 36+ miles in four days without the least bit of problem except for some blisters on the big toe - I blame the sand.

Maybe I will return to the blog someday, but for now I am going to enjoy running whenever I want and for whatever reason I run although I will miss the daily journaling aspect. Hmpphhhh.

Went to see my PT for the first time since February. Hip has been bugging me for an entire week so I needed a little reassurance and direction. It was great to see PT since he knows my hips better than me and the visit was very encouraging since nothing appears to be wrong and everything looks great - best my low back SI has ever looked ever!

I think it is pretty cool that I went six months before my first flare-up. The 10 hours of Clif Bar booth standing last week followed by my first ever fast run probably just inflamed something or ripped up some scar tissue or adhesion. Take it easy for a few more days and relax :)

First post-Rut slog! Life handed me a gigantic ball of crap last week so my recovery was compromised to say the least. I attempted Superior from Cardiff Pass and got shut out by gigantic clouds (see below). I couldn't find the trail and was scrambling around at a level too difficult for comfort and I bloodied my ankle pretty badly so I bailed only 400 vertical feet from the top. I felt pretty good except my right ankle still feels sort of sprained and my right hamstring feels funky at the fibula attachment point. Other than that I can say The Rut didn't do too much damage!

When I finished my rike, my new Suunto said I went 5 miles, but when I upload it says I went 4.3. It also said I had a 6:26 mile when I know I spent at least 30+  minutes cowering on the ridge and was barely moving grrrrrrrr.

After work today, I crawled into my makeshift bed and almost called it a day. Then I looked at the forecast and realized how few days might be left before the high Wasatch is covered in snow so I motivated up to the White Pine Trailhead and all the way to the Pheifferhorn.

The clouds and rain made the views spectacular and the colors absolutely pop! I forgot how early the sun now sets so I descended from Red Pine Lake in the dark with only my iPhone flashlight. The aspen leaves scattered across the trail were seriously glowing in the dark as well as the moose eyes in the woods - yikes!

I am pretty sure this is my favorite view in all of the Wasatch. Instagram is the easiest way to upload photos to frb btw.

And that's why more people don't take the bus.

From Amiee on Tue, Nov 18, 2014 at 19:46:41 from 24.10.188.197

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to take Trax to the bus!

Doubtful I could beat mass transit on the way (UP) to work.

Enjoyed this article about Killian and his crazy FKT-ing! Really concerned that his head may actually blow up during his Everest attempt next year.

Also, this Mt. Wire trail running video is awesome! Go Outside and Play: A Morning on Red Butte

AM: Way too early Liberty Park run and then a cool-down with the Roo-ster.

PM: 5 miles home from work.

Who is this person?

Tried something different today, listened to a podcast (which was amazing, Terry Tempest Williams on Radiowest - LISTEN) during my run and took a turn off Dry Creek that I've never taken which got me bushwhacking up to a ridge that I never made it to the top of and was at one point 45% covered in burs. Pleasant change from the Liberty Loopties!

PM: Roo walk and 2 hours at the climbing gym.

Do it! I was actually going to tell you to listen because it talks a lot about walking :)

I'm in the midst of a big 2 day busywork computer project at work, and Radiowest is the only thing keeping me going right now. Thanks for the reminder that there is something other than ESPN podcenter :-)

Roo walk to the vet for his shots. He weighed in at eleven pounds, boo hoo! He's nearing the limit of my carrying capacity.

Then some laps around Liberty and caught a bunch of girls dancing to Taylor Swift in the alleyway behind my house, if I was Jake I would have joined in! Now off to some trail running film fest and some brewskis.

Drove to Moab. Hiked to Corona Arch and then chilled by the Colorado River. Highlight was having Roo's tendon treat stolen by a raven.

Headed south to the Cedar Mesa to try and find some ruins in Road Canyon. Sort of freaky when you get to the unmarked trailhead off of a forever dirt road and haven't seen a single car or person in over an hour and then drop down into a mazelike canyon and wander around for hours scrambling up to ruins with a wiggly 11-pound weight in your arms knowing that no one knows where you are right now and no one would really notice that you are missing for quite some time and if they did they really woudn't know where to look. Made it out in time (need to start telling people where I am going) to catch the sunset in Monument Valley before calling it a night in Mexican Hat.

Caught the sunrise at the San Juan Goosenecks, drove through Cedar Mesa, wandered around the rivers at Hite, hiked Little Wildhorse Canyon in the Swell, and then drove the entire Temple Mountain Road back to 70 and home listening to Amy Poehler's book the whole way - hilarious!

1. Awesome week

2. Is there a southern shortcut from the Mexican Hat area to LWH/Goblin Valley, or did you have to drive back up through Moab and around?

Slept like crap and felt like crap today so what a perfect time to drink a bunch of coffee and do the west face of Grandeur! Super icy near the top and the whole thing was so absolutely miserable I wanted to cry. I always forget how freaking steep it is and this was my first time going down the west side - owieeeee! Super glad I got out though :)

My quads feel awesome today! They burn with every step down the stairs. It is so great to feel real muscle soreness rather than all the joint pain I am used to!

HUGE conundrum. I cannot decide which race to register for - the Antelope Canyon 55K or the Monument Valley 50K. I really want to do one this winter and they both look fantastic. If I knew it was going to be a crappy ski year, I would do both!

That's a good kind of conundrum to have.

Last year the 3rd weekend of Feb featured one of the best powder days of the season, but I don't see anything for certain on the 100 day forecast yet :-)

From allie on Tue, Dec 02, 2014 at 14:56:45 from 24.30.41.119

do both and ski on sunday!

From Jake K on Tue, Dec 02, 2014 at 19:23:11 from 98.202.128.218

That is the one good thing about the rule outlawing Sunday races in Utah... you can ski on your recovery day.

From Amiee on Fri, Dec 05, 2014 at 19:36:16 from 24.10.188.197

Signed up for Antelope Canyon if anyone is interested in a road trip that weekend :) It is close to the WAVE (wink wink)!

Today will go down as one of my happiest mornings in history! Skiing Mill Creek in the morning without a soul around is one of my most favorite things to do and this morning I had a little buddy to join me. Roo did great, he only tried to eat my skis eight times before realizing that was a really bad idea (the poles are another story). He just loves the snow and being outside and he makes me so HAPPY!

AM: Forrest yoga

PM: 3 Roo walks and thought I would go for a short easy run. Made it 2 blocks and couldn't take another step on my knee. I fell going down Grandeur on Monday and twisted my knee. It hurt yesterday, but I stupidly ran through it because I needed to run and now I feel totally f-ed! Please please get better, I really need to be able to run and ski this winter. I just want ONE winter! Off for more cupcakes and red grape....

Early morning hike with Roo on the BST from Morris Meadows and then two laps on the Alta Summer Road with my touring gear working on my transitions for the big Citizen's SkiMo race on Tuesday. Just shooting for slight humiliation rather than total, utter humiliation Tuesday. Then 3 hours at the climbing gym and another 1-hour Roo walk - shew!

An exorbitant amount of walking.

First SkiMo experience ever. Did 2 laps on the course and it was ridiculously hard. There was a boot pack section that almost made me cry. I never want to do it again, but can't wait for next week! Things I need to work on/fix:

  1. Learn how to lock bindings so I don't pop out a hundred times and hold up traffic.
  2. Get brighter head lamp.
  3. Remove leashes from my skis since they are totally unnecessary.
  4. Wear bike helmet instead of ski helmet.
  5. Don't cry.
