I ran my old path this morning. The moon was full and fleeing the morning sun. I decided to be bold and wear the red body shirt. Have you ever seen a 40 year old in a body shirt? Makes you want to run!! (run away that is) I started out slow and picked up the pace. I really enjoy running in the morning. I feel I get a better work out because it is not so hot. Trying to train my mind to concentrate on my breathing and keep those negative thoughts that want me to slow down at bay. RAN ANOTHER 4 TONIGHT. CALFS GOT CRAMPS. HAD TO STOP. TOOK POTASIUM PILLS TONIGHT.

Thanks for the compliment. I'd love to be able to run a 2:45 marathon, but I don't think that will ever happen.

As far as training for an ultra, the main thing I think is time on your feet. Not necessarily miles, although that certainly does help. I generally follow a modified Hal Higdon format in that I go for my long run (20-35 miles) on Sunday's, 1 day for speed, 1 day for tempo and 1 day midweek for a longish run. I usually take Saturday's off. I'm currently training for a 100k next month in Oregon and also for the Wasatch Front 100 mile in Sept. so I'm trying to ramp the miles up. I'm lucky in that I can run to work and back, roughly 17.7 miles round trip. This helps get the miles up quickly. That's the physical part, the mental part is to lose brain cells in large amounts and become mental;-) It's mainly realizing that you're going to be in a race for hours and hours, possibly days. The race becomes your universe and nothing else matters. There's also the huge sense of accompliment when you finish something like a 100 mile run knowing that very few people will ever be able, or want, to do something like that.
