First run in Florida, day after we arrived.  I went out about 9am and ran over the Sand Key bridge.  I had to stop at a bathroom midway to splash water all over myself and cool off.  I really felt I was fighting heat stroke! 8:49 av pace

This race was in Tampa Florida at the Al Lopez park which is a nice big "nature" park with lakes & lots of trees.  I thought I could get away with dragging the family to this event even though we were on vacation because they could keep themselves occupied looking for alligators & turtles in the lake while I ran.  Worked out pretty well in the end.  At first they wanted to kill me because we were getting up at 5am while on vacation to drive 1/2 hr. to a race.  As we left for the race my 10 yr old son grabbed his running shoes (which he had in FL because he's on a relay team and wanted to practice while in FL) I thought it was odd that he was bringing his racing shoes to my race- but whatever.  Then in the car on the way there he asked if he could run the beginning or end of the race with me.  I told him "of course, that would be cool!" (Mind you- I'm always trying to talk him into training for a 5k with me, but he always wants to stick with strictly track work and shorter distances)  As we got out of the car at the race, the tempation was too great for him & he wanted to race the whole 5k!! SO- I signed him up and he ran a 28:19 (UPDATE, its time was actually 26:03 according to the official results.  Boy was I off in my initial posting of Toby's time.  Sorry Toby! Way to rock his 1st 5k!!!!!!!!!) for his first ever 5k! Not too shabby! He finished strong and looked great at the finish.  I was worried about his recovery since he doesn't usually run more than a couple miles at his track practices- but he did great! He was sore for a couple days- but not sore enough to stop him from skimboarding, swimming or any activity.  He took advantage of the free massage at the finish which was a good idea, that probably helped him recover.  He should start his own blog- but until then I'll have his race report(s) here.  So the race went like this:

We did a 10:22 warm up for 1 mile.  Then we ran our own pace for the race. Don't have Toby's splits.

My splits were: 7:15, 7:54, 8:19.  There were aid stations every mile and I took advantage of every one to get water.  The heat & humidity combo really affects me which makes me feel so whimpy.  My legs & lungs wanted to keep going fast, but I felt oppressed by the heat so I kept slowing down considerably each mile.  I did beat my previous 5k time by a few seconds, but I really wanted out of the 24:00s. ! On a positive note, I do feel that if I was at home I probably could have pulled off a better time if I wasn't wilting from heat.  I'm anxious to run another 5k this summer and see what I can do.  Overall, I should be happy that I PR'd in FL, even if not by as much as I wanted.  And the day was a great success because Toby ran his first 5k and did OUTSTANDING! We both wanted AD awards, but wasn't in the card for us.   (I thought competition would be easier as I got older- HA! If I was in the younger divisions I would have placed, but my division had all the speedies!) Toby was running in the 10-14 group and had some tough high schoolers as competition.

Best run of the trip to FL. Ran along the beach, 7am. Saved this 'til the end of the trip because I didn't want to race in sandy shoes! (Done that before, not good) Anyway- it was beautiful and I caught the beach before the crowds came. I even found a perfect "olive shell" that morning- one of the best shells found all trip! (race recovery run, 10:00 av pace)

I'm baaaaack! Wow, 2 weeks without "the blog" and I did survive! (barely...) Actually the sun, surf & good food in Florida kept my mind far away from computers.  I didn't touch a computer for 12 days- a record for me in the past few years!

I'm happy to report that I DID run in Florida.  Even ran a 5k with my son.  Let me tell you, Florida is flipping HOT! But more than HOT its H*U*M*I*D*! (Of course I know this, I grew up there for heaven's sake)  I had a week to run there before my 5k and the heat was really getting to me.  Had to stop every mile and drink & cool down.  Wasn't sure how the 5k would go.  It was pretty good, I did PR- not by as much as I wanted.  But you can read all about that in the Spring Into Summer 5k4 Race Report if you're into torturing yourself at the hands of a babbling bloggie.

Anyway, I'm going to go back now and track my few runs that I did in Florida.  Then I will attempt to catch up with all of your blogs which will probably take me a few days.  But I can't wait to see what you've all been up to!

As a side note- the DAY after I got home from Florida I started a new job with the state as a Social Worker.  So if my entries are few & far between for awhile, you'll know its just 'cause I'm playing it safe and not using my work email for personal use and probably will be in a time crunch at home in the evenings.  Somehow I will balance it, but it will take a few weeks to work out the kinks.  I have registered for the Bryce 1/2 July 19th , so I plan on getting my booty in gear for that- starting with a long run tomorrow w/  the Sole Sistas!

(since I have the hardest time posting pics on this blog, I'm going to put my personal blog address for anyone who wants to check out Florida vacation pics www.CarpeDiem95.blogspot.com )

I really like that Sasha added "goal type" to our blog. It made me make a choice between Age Division Winner & Boston Qualifier. I realized AD Placement is a bit more important to me. I still want to qualify for Boston of course, but I think now that I have my goal in mind it will make my training more enjoyable and focused. Thanks Sasha!

Only 3 miles this week- whoa! I'm not being hard on myself though- I came back from vacation and started a job the day after this week.   I needed all the sleep I could get.  I'm excited to dive into next week's training (5 weeks 'til the Bryce 1/2) and get myself some new Mizunos (mine have over 500 mi. and just called it quits this last week)

Nice run w/ Buff & Heather.  Felt good to be back running with "my girls" after a couple weeks away.  Time to start gearing up for Bryce 1/2!

12 miler w/ Sole Sisters today.  Ran with a couple new girls, it was good for me to mix it up and chat with them.  I was happy that I still have somewhat of a base after my lame training recently.  This week was busy juggling my new job & kids on summer break- running suffered.  I think I'm getting into a groove though and every week will be better.  I felt really good on this 12 miler so I'm glad about that. Goals for next week- run at least 4 days and weights 2x. (that will be 1 more running session and 1 more weight session than I got in this week)

Took the sore foot on a test run today.  Happy to report its better.  Still a bit sore/stiff when I run but hardly sore at all to walk on now.  I wore different shoes today and that helped.  I think the problem was old worn out shoes, esp. since I roll my left foot a lot- the outer edge took the damage.  Anywho- I'm going to try to SLOWLY up the mileage this week.  I hope I can still do Bryce 1/2!

2 mi. walking.  Foot hurt afterwards.  Frustrated, but so busy with my new work schedule that I don't have energy to worry about it too much.  Tomorrow I'm going to SLC w/ my kids for the week to train for my new job & visit w/ my parents.  I'm taking some running stuff and hoping to log some quality, easy miles. Sorry I've been a slacker at commenting on everyone's blogs.  Hope to catch up soon! Keep on RUNNING!

Nice run around Daybreak while staying at my parents.  Foot still sore but its sore either way so glad I ran.  Mileage was a bit slower, most miles over 9 min. miles except for 1 mi. under 9 min.  Guess that's to be expected with the foot injury and lack of training recently.  I haven't gone to doc. yet, still watching it.

After run rode bikes w/ my 10 yr old son.  It was a blast.

Surviving the new job but needing to get more runs in!  HAPPY 4th of JULY!
