Lunch run, partially/mostly with Jack. He got ready a little late, so we met up later in the run. I think he wanted to go a little fast, because we ended up with fast splits than I expected (5.26 in 0:42:06)

2 mile warmup, 3 mile T, 3 minute E, 2 mile T, 2 minute E, 5x(3 minute hard, 2 minute E), 6x(200m R, 200m E), cool down.

T=9mph, Hard=9.5mph, R=10mph. This workout was just what the doctor ordered. The kind that pushes you right up to a healthy limit that helps you gain strength not just physically but also mentally. It is a cool feeling to to be close to that limit and becoming better requires having an awareness of it.

Treadmill before the bus. 10 strides. (8.5 in 1:05:13)

Lunch run. Jack got out late again. Funny story that leads me to agree with Dr. Noakes' central governor theory. Jack said he would try to catch me, and I knew he was telling the truth. I tried to go at a normal pace for an easy run. Every mile marker indicated to me that I was going much faster than for a normal easy run though. It's a good thing that we humans don't have conscious control over that governor, because otherwise there would be a lot more overuse injuries among runners. Jack had a similar story: that he was running faster than usual and still felt really good. I guess you could say I was a "jackrabbit" for this run. (4.46 in 0:35:55)

Some gnarly rubbing on the skin by my Achilles tendons. Felt pain around mile 11, but it went away pretty quick. No tendinitis, just skin chafing.

Took my mom to the airport this morning, so no morning run. This week with her was so much fun. I am so happy that my parents are looking to move closer soon.

Easy lunch run. Some discomfort in the quad right at the end. Glad it was a light day. (6.13 in 0:50:41)

Lunch run with Jack. We took it really slow today. I definitely needed it, as my muscles are still fatigued and sore from last week. Kinda weird, as I felt fine Saturday and Sunday. (5.08 in 0:43:38)

Race: Ririe Days Half Marathon (w/ scenic detour) (14.43 Miles) 01:44:20, Place overall: 4

Ririe Days is a great event! The town of Ririe really puts on a good party, and it made the race something that my whole family could enjoy and not just me. Ellie got to jump on bounce houses, play on a playground, eat free snow cones, and ride a horse-drawn cart.

The race itself was fun, and was good training in many aspects. First, it drops almost 900 feet in the first 2.5 miles, and then is relatively flat, with a few small hills, for the rest of the race. Miles 3-5ish are on gravel roads. Also, a special feature in this year's iteration was an incorrectly pointed sign at the end of the gravel road. So a few of us ended up running down another gravel road (i.e. the wrong direction) for varying distances. I figured something was wrong when I ended up at a dead end with a nice farmhouse, and saw the guy who WAS in first place turning around to go back... He actually ran several directions around the house looking for the path and ended up with 14.99 miles total on his watch at the end of the race. I had 14.43. We were able to turn several others back around before they got too far down the path. Also, the arrow that was placed to direct runners was a sticker attached to a road sign, so nobody attempted to turn it the right way. I still pushed my hardest, and decided this would at least be a very good training run. Around mile 10 I could see a guy ahead of me, and I tried to reel him in. He ended up finishing 30 seconds before me and got the 3rd place medal. Only the overall winners got medals, so shucks! I barely missed it! The guy who would've undoubtedly gotten first place ended up getting second place so kudos to him. The guy who officially got first place turned out to be a veteran to this race. Overall, very fun time for everyone. I also don't feel too wiped out, and I even played on the rock-climbing wall rented from BYU-I. I highly recommend this race to those looking for something that the whole family can enjoy. Did I mention there was a free community breakfast as well?

Woke up at 4am to get breakfast and allow time for the rest of my body to wake up. I actually jogged about 2.5 miles from my house to the bus pickup point to save my wife from having to wake up. Also did about a half mile of warm up 20 minutes before race start. This went much like last weekend's race. I was very controlled and relaxed on the downhill portion that takes the first 3ish miles. Then I put in a little more power as the course leveled out and left a couple of guys I was mostly staying side by side with. The rest of the race was a great feeling of reeling in rabbit after rabbit. There were some badly marked turns on this race. The worst one actually cut off a significant chunk of the race if you missed it. So I actually passed several people multiple times. I was pretty happy at the end, as I'm pretty sure I didn't lose to anyone because of the badly marked turn. This course was way longer than 13.1 last year and I'm pretty sure it was still a little longer this year too (about 0.2 miles). A lot of people at the finish line were upset about the course being longer, a lot of people accidentally cutting the course short, etc. Overall, it was a great experience for me. I'm always happy with being able to do a race. Even if turns are missed or others intentionally or unintentionally make the course shorter, races are still so filled with adrenaline for me, and then with such positive emotions when crossing the finish line!

The website for this race said there would be a kids fun run after the half. Apparently that is no longer the case. Ellie had gotten super excited about doing her own race after mine, so we did our own little race together, where I put my medal on her neck at the end. She really enjoyed that :)

As far as how I feel now, I feel really really good! Even a few hours after the race, I feel like I could run back to the start line. I probably couldn't, but seriously I feel super good.
