Pocatello is a great race! It has some challenge to run it well but Mike the RD does an awesome job with this event.

Long run around town. Had some really weird persisting symptoms after yesterday morning's run. Felt a little stiff/knotted in a small part of my back. I figured it was a normal muscle knot, and it might be, but I noticed it had impaired my breathing. It wasn't very painful, but when I tried to take a complete deep breath, I could only make it about 80% before I hit a limit. It felt like my lungs had a plug somewhere preventing them from filling completely. I did some breathing exercises several times yesterday and it felt like that loosened them up a bit. This morning I felt good enough to run, and didn't notice any problem with breathing. I still feel a small snag when I try to take a deep breath. I'd say it feels like I can breath 95% of the way. I'm not too worried as it seems to be improving. Based off today's run though, I'm not sure I'm ready to break 3 hours in my marathon in 5 weeks...darn. (20.16 in 2:44:03)

Thanks Martin! It was a good race. I definitely wasn't ready for a sub-3 race. Also, the weather wasn't very good for the first part of the race. Will write a post here soon.

Will write more later. This was a fun race and was exciting all the way through, even with poor weather for part of it! I felt like I did a pretty decent carb heavy diet starting Thursday at dinner time. Ate English muffins, oatmeal, bagels, etc. The last heavy protein I had was some baked chicken with spinach and mustard in a bagel sandwich. Seeing that the weather forecast for the race was bad, I went to Deseret Industries and got a cheap hoodie and gloves. Went to dinner with friends at Pig &a Jelly Jar, which was not a good place to go the night before a marathon. I just had a side waffle with fruit and syrup (and now I really want to go back to try the actual menu, because watching my wife eat chicken and biscuits was almost torture!). Waking up on race morning, I had a decent sized bowl of oatmeal with a large banana and peanut butter, almost exactly 3 hours before the race started. I was lucky that my bus was delayed for some reason and I didn't get off of it until 30 minutes before race start. It was sleeting at the start line and very foggy/cloudy (felt like western Oregon). I spent the next 25 minutes in line for a PoP. Changed out of my old shoes and socks with holes, drank a small electrolyte drink (Spark), and actually used the PoP as well. I wore my hoodie right up to the start line, then threw it next to a bunch of other abandoned clothes. Through most of the race I wore: baseball cap, tank, shorts, arm and leg sleeves, and gloves. That worked really well with the weather. I took off the gloves near the end. The weather got better later in the race, and the last 5 miles were really nice. I tried to keep my goal pace, but slowly lost it throughout the race. I definitely wasn't ready to break 3, but I have a little more time to prepare for my next marathon (Pocatello). It was a great race though. I pushed myself all the way through and had fun cheering others and doing my best. I also met Walter and learned how BQ certifications are done. Also, my 3 y/o was cheering "Go Daddy! Go Daddy!" at the end :-D

Lunch run. Jack got out late again. Funny story that leads me to agree with Dr. Noakes' central governor theory. Jack said he would try to catch me, and I knew he was telling the truth. I tried to go at a normal pace for an easy run. Every mile marker indicated to me that I was going much faster than for a normal easy run though. It's a good thing that we humans don't have conscious control over that governor, because otherwise there would be a lot more overuse injuries among runners. Jack had a similar story: that he was running faster than usual and still felt really good. I guess you could say I was a "jackrabbit" for this run. (4.46 in 0:35:55)

From Donald on Sat, Jul 13, 2019 at 12:18:46 from 24.119.22.216

Thanks! You've been doing awesome as well. This is my record mileage week without actually focusing on mileage. One time I did 100 just to say I did it, and that kicked my butt. It's been a steady progression to where I am right now, and I feel pretty good!

From Eugene on Sat, Jul 13, 2019 at 19:05:00 from 73.58.34.45

I did that same thing to do 100 a couple times just to say I did it right after high school - it feels a lot better working up to it naturally :)

any plans to increase mileage any more with the marathon a month-ish away(and half the month after)? Even if you don't beforehand it puts you in a good place for training after.

From Donald on Sat, Jul 13, 2019 at 20:17:34 from 64.9.255.17

Time constraints will probably keep me about where I'm at now. Right now, a lot of things in life are aligned to keep me really busy (school, work, church responsibilities, and very young kids). In a few years, at least two of those things will be eating up less time, so maybe I'll increase my mileage when that happens. For now, I'd like to hold 80-90 miles/week for a while and see what kind of improvement I get there. Currently, my next marathon isn't until June, but I'd like to find something in the early spring. It may require traveling though.

Race: Ririe Days Half Marathon (w/ scenic detour) (14.43 Miles) 01:44:20, Place overall: 4
Total Distance
15.55

Ririe Days is a great event! The town of Ririe really puts on a good party, and it made the race something that my whole family could enjoy and not just me. Ellie got to jump on bounce houses, play on a playground, eat free snow cones, and ride a horse-drawn cart.

The race itself was fun, and was good training in many aspects. First, it drops almost 900 feet in the first 2.5 miles, and then is relatively flat, with a few small hills, for the rest of the race. Miles 3-5ish are on gravel roads. Also, a special feature in this year's iteration was an incorrectly pointed sign at the end of the gravel road. So a few of us ended up running down another gravel road (i.e. the wrong direction) for varying distances. I figured something was wrong when I ended up at a dead end with a nice farmhouse, and saw the guy who WAS in first place turning around to go back... He actually ran several directions around the house looking for the path and ended up with 14.99 miles total on his watch at the end of the race. I had 14.43. We were able to turn several others back around before they got too far down the path. Also, the arrow that was placed to direct runners was a sticker attached to a road sign, so nobody attempted to turn it the right way. I still pushed my hardest, and decided this would at least be a very good training run. Around mile 10 I could see a guy ahead of me, and I tried to reel him in. He ended up finishing 30 seconds before me and got the 3rd place medal. Only the overall winners got medals, so shucks! I barely missed it! The guy who would've undoubtedly gotten first place ended up getting second place so kudos to him. The guy who officially got first place turned out to be a veteran to this race. Overall, very fun time for everyone. I also don't feel too wiped out, and I even played on the rock-climbing wall rented from BYU-I. I highly recommend this race to those looking for something that the whole family can enjoy. Did I mention there was a free community breakfast as well?

From Donald on Sat, Jul 27, 2019 at 17:35:51 from 24.119.22.216

Tom, probably the week after this one. I'll be on the road a lot this week.

Race: Idaho Falls Half Marathon 2019 (13.109 Miles) 01:34:21, Place overall: 9, Place in age division: 2
Total Distance
16.71

Woke up at 4am to get breakfast and allow time for the rest of my body to wake up. I actually jogged about 2.5 miles from my house to the bus pickup point to save my wife from having to wake up. Also did about a half mile of warm up 20 minutes before race start. This went much like last weekend's race. I was very controlled and relaxed on the downhill portion that takes the first 3ish miles. Then I put in a little more power as the course leveled out and left a couple of guys I was mostly staying side by side with. The rest of the race was a great feeling of reeling in rabbit after rabbit. There were some badly marked turns on this race. The worst one actually cut off a significant chunk of the race if you missed it. So I actually passed several people multiple times. I was pretty happy at the end, as I'm pretty sure I didn't lose to anyone because of the badly marked turn. This course was way longer than 13.1 last year and I'm pretty sure it was still a little longer this year too (about 0.2 miles). A lot of people at the finish line were upset about the course being longer, a lot of people accidentally cutting the course short, etc. Overall, it was a great experience for me. I'm always happy with being able to do a race. Even if turns are missed or others intentionally or unintentionally make the course shorter, races are still so filled with adrenaline for me, and then with such positive emotions when crossing the finish line!

The website for this race said there would be a kids fun run after the half. Apparently that is no longer the case. Ellie had gotten super excited about doing her own race after mine, so we did our own little race together, where I put my medal on her neck at the end. She really enjoyed that :)

As far as how I feel now, I feel really really good! Even a few hours after the race, I feel like I could run back to the start line. I probably couldn't, but seriously I feel super good.

Good race. The RD is new this year. I was out running yesterday and noticed that the course markers were not really done well and could easily be missed. This course has some windy parts which are confusing even with good markings...I got into a bit of a row with a guy a few years ago because we both went off course a bit...not one of my finer days.

Did you have any dog issues coming off the hill? A buddy was running down Sunnyside last weekend and was attacked by Rottweilers. I told the RD and he said he was going to try to talk to the owner (the sheriff also knows about this dog problem).

From Donald on Sat, Jul 27, 2019 at 11:50:27 from 209.107.188.8

Jeff, I think Ryan put on a great race. I'll give him time to continue working out kinks. Last year I had a good scare with the same dogs I think. Not today though. The dogs definitely need to be on a leash. When I got scared by them, I was on my way up to the landfill. I was scared enough on the way down that I took an alternate route down on some dirt roads.

From Tom Slick on Sun, Jul 28, 2019 at 21:41:47 from 66.87.126.126

Not withstanding the dog problems, congrats on your Half Mary performance. 94 minutes and change is a good time especially when you place In the top ten overall and place second in your age division.

From Donald on Mon, Jul 29, 2019 at 14:04:16 from 65.222.251.100

Thanks, Tom! The dog problems were on the same route, but on a different day (not a race day, fortunately). I am very happy with my race, especially since I have been keeping up my mileage for these "training" races. My big goal is the Pocatello marathon at the end of August.

I was feeling really lame yesterday (sore and uncomfortable) and I was planning on scrapping this workout and running at a light pace on the treadmill in case my ankle gave me trouble. True chip time was 3:08:10. At about mile 8, I knew that I wasn't getting anywhere near sub-3. BUT this was a great race for me. Well before the halfway point, I felt myself fading. Even though I knew I wasn't getting my goal, I decided early to give this race my very best. I gave 100% and feel really good about it. The neatest thing is that around mile 19, it paid off that I kept pushing, as I passed a few people that had passed me when I was fading earlier. I'm not sure why, but I definitely got a second wind about 75% through the race and kept it until the end. If think I ran a really good race and there's not much I could've done differently during the race. After finishing, my fatigue hit me like a train and I had nothing left, not even for a really short and slow cool down (I tried). Something I can improve in the long term: get back to 140 lbs. I think that's the biggest difference between my performance today and my PR at STG last year when I was 10+ pounds lighter.

Awesome race today! This was my 4th annual mother-son half marathon with my mom. She traveled up from Texas to race. The bus loading/finish area for this race is also just a mile from my uncle and aunt's house, so extra convenient. This was the night of sleep I've ever had before a race, as I only woke up once before it was time to get up. I had a half bagel with hot chocolate, and then we jogged to the buses. The start line was much colder than expected, and it actually took me about 10 minutes of running in the race before my muscles felt completely loosened up again after shivering. The first mile is the slowest Mike, and my Garmin registered a 6:58 mile. I wanted to take this race conservatively, as I didn't want to burn out on this course and not be able to pace the STG marathon in 3 weeks. The course just kept getting faster though, and we didn't have to do the out-and-back segment that the full marathoners had. I started calm on most of the course, and let quite a few people pass me. Around mile 11, I realized my faster-than-usual times weren't too good to be true and I pushed harder. I barely even slowed down on the level parts, and I think that is due to conditioning from 3 other downhill races this summer. I rolled in at 1:26:18, which is almost 6 minutes faster than any other half marathon I've run before. Good good day!

I did a cool down loop and felt great. I also walked a mile back to the house with my family, which showed up en masse to cheer for me and my mom. This evening we drove up the course and onwards to Guardsman's Pass. Then we hiked up the remaining part of the mountain in the north side of the road to the weather station. Felt fine!

Sounds chilly Donald! It was cooler in Vernal this morning as well, 40 degrees. My family and I don't want it to turn into the low 30's yet, because we are still trying to enjoy our garden, especially our raspberries lol!

From Donald on Sun, Sep 22, 2019 at 09:53:16 from 96.18.197.98

That's rough! Raspberries are so good, but so sensitive. Is it typical for Vernal to get that cold this time of year?

From Kenny the Apache on Sun, Sep 22, 2019 at 14:10:22 from 65.48.74.201

Typically Vernal doesn't get this cold until the first part of October, but I guess the cold is starting a bit earlier this year.

Went to bed last night feeling sick. I woke up a little better but I decided not to run anyways. I still got up at the same and did homework instead. Now I feel awesome! I'm definitely going to do a lunch-time run!

Oh man. Running today was pure bliss. I can only think of one or two other times when I have felt this good running. Not that I usually don't feel good...I run almost every day because I like it. It's just times like these where you don't want to stop, and it feels exihilirating to go faster and faster. Too bad it was at work, or I probably would've kept going. (6.44 in 0:50:48)

Some threshold paced sets. It was about the effort level I expected after being a little sick, and also with a long hiatus from fast running. What I did not expect was feeling some nausea 10 minutes after being done. Before getting into running, I was big into calisthenics and gymnastics type exercises (rings). I slowly got out of this type of exercise because my workouts were constantly getting way-laid by strong bouts of nausea. If I had eaten within the 3-5 hours prior, there was always a risk of losing my food with the nausea. I even got a heart ultrasound with the doctor, suspecting heart palpitations, but he never found anything. Anyways, I hope that isn't happening here now... (8.5 in 1:00:32)

I felt like speeding it up again today, and did a small aerobic builder exercise. It was a lower effort compared to yesterday, but I still felt a little bit of nausea at about the same 10-minute post-workout mark. It wasn't as bad as yesterday, but it was also an easier run. (7 in 0:51:39)

Small builder on the treadmill. It's been a good week. Running fast seems to be something I really needed. Running was getting a little boring. (7 in 0:51:01)

Happy to be running without long sleeves. On the flip side, I miss being able to walk on a sidewalk without snow. (9.1 in 1:09:12)

Lunch time treadmill. This was my last run of the year, and I pushed pretty hard at the end. (3.5 in 0:26:03)

It's been a great year. No BQ, but oh well. I did my first pacing gig, which was awesome, and got 3 marathons in. I also got a big half marathon PR, and ran my best yearly mileage yet.
