From Tom Slick on Thu, Jan 26, 2017 at 17:02:56 from 70.12.36.37

All is well...I've been taking some what of a break while I've been making big changes in my life. I've rebuilt my running program along with my weight lifting and other cross training activities. I will get back to posting my workouts pretty soon, soon as the dust settles from my just activated long awaited retirement.

From Tom Slick on Fri, Feb 10, 2017 at 09:02:21 from 174.154.136.19

Yo Rhett - I'm head long into retirement and I'm loving it! I think I've got it figured out but there are a few nuances that still need my attention. There are so many medicare plans it gets a little bit frustrating.....but I've just about got it under control!

From Tom Slick on Sun, Apr 02, 2017 at 15:12:28 from 173.117.214.57

Rhett - I haven't but I'm zeroing in on it. After my attempt to go to the Berlin Marathon blew up I've started looking for another new marathon to run. I just haven't been able to zero in on one, yet.

I'm thinking of signing up for the St George Marathon coming up this October and go run it with some long time friends of the past and future. There is no lottery this year, SGM is a first come first served marathon now, but I would be entering under the Ten Year Club member clause. I think I would be using SGM as a tune up for the 2018 Boston Marathon. In the mean time I am going to sign up for some 5ks and maybe a half mary to get ready for a Mary in the fall.

From Tom Slick on Mon, Apr 10, 2017 at 17:01:11 from 174.148.140.162

IJR - Even though I just barely made the time for a BQ (6 seconds) I will be going to the 2018 Boston Marathon. I was recognized by the BAA a few years back as having run the Boston 10 times or more and all I have to do is get a BQ time and I'm in!!!!

The whole time I was wishing I was there even though they were saying it was a warm day for the runners. Oh well, I'll see the Good Ol' Boston Marathon this time next year.. After sitting around all day I managed to get my running shoes on and go do a token 3 mi run around the small block sans the garmin. 65*, light 12 mph wind out of the south, partly cloudy,36% humidity.

My running partner Blake wants to run Boston again next year but is in need of a BQ. I showed him the Full Monte Marathon and I think he is going to do it. It looks like it runs right during Boston registration so should qualify runners for 2 years.

From Tom Slick on Wed, May 10, 2017 at 18:13:15 from 173.117.155.221

Rhett - you are absolutely correct, the full monte is a two for one run for Boston. I called and talked to the race director and confirmed this.

From Smooth on Wed, Aug 16, 2017 at 22:14:35 from 75.162.76.154

From Tom Slick on Thu, Aug 17, 2017 at 09:25:20 from 174.148.184.60

Smooth - The Nebo is a different kind of animal. At the start you are at about 9200 feet and you have about 7 mountain tops to ascend and descend, run them slow and control your breathing and save your energy for the flat hot miles from mile 19 to the finish line.

I am at 159 lbs and think that I can safely drop 2 more pounds in the next 20 days and hit my goal weight of 157 lbs. I haven't been 157 lbs since I ran my first marathon at SGM in 1998.

Slick. You've done the work now go run smart and reap the rewards.

Race: The Huntsman Full Monte Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:58:30, Place overall: 166, Place in age division: 1
Total Distance
26.20

The Full Monte -9/16/2019-Huntsville Utah Marathon.

The Full Monte is a very well organized marathon which also includes a half marathon, a 10k, a 5k and a 1 mile kids run! It reminds me of the St George Marathon and the Nestle a 5K in regards to it's family friendly and runner supportive community! The marathon race course is a gentle downhill grade from start to finish without any surprises.

At the starting line I met up with Smooth, Teena and we prepared for the run down the hill. I had the privileged of helping to train a good friend on mine (Troy) to run his very first marathon. At the starting line tent I introduced Troy to Smooth who agreed to run with Troy during the marathon. Smooth has been on a whirlwind tour of a bunch of marathon and has the St George marathon to do in about 17 days and Teena too! But not me.

Just before the race we were run out of the heated tent and moved towards the starting lines. If I have a concern about the marathon it's the starting line chip readers were not the width of the small road, just about half of it and you had cones funneling you through them to the mats. It appeared that many runners missed getting their chips read.

Prior to the race I had decided that I wanted to run a 3:45:00 at the Full Monte. When we all got out of the tent I noticed that The Full Monte had "Pacers". I searched around and could not find a 3:45 pacer and soon learned that my choices of a Pacer were either the 3:40 pacer or the 3:55 pacer. I chose the 3:40 pacer and pace group even though I thought that the 3:40 pace was a bit to fast for me. Oh ya, this is a very fast course, as much as 15 minutes fast!

Bang, the race started with a bum announcing system that could hardly be heard, everybody that wasn't very close to the starter just got pulled into the start when the group of about 196 marathon runners started to move down the course. So the race was on at the appointed time of 8:am. The temperature at about 35* at the altitude of about 8750' and there was a light wind blowing over the starting area. But as usual it only took a few minutes of running until you warm up. I jumped into the 3:40 pace group of about 12  runners plus the Pacer. If there was a steeper grade on the course it was the first 3 or four miles but it was still very easy to control your pace and not go out too fast and brutalize your legs.

I stayed with the pace group until about 20 mile where I started to lose gas which was more than likely because of going out with the faster pace group. But I had to because there wasn't a 3:45 or 3:50 pace group. At the 22 mile mark you take a side street of the main course which had been Highway 39 for about 3 miles until you returned to Highway 39 at about the 25 mile mark. Now you could hear the sounds of the finish line but weren't able to see it because you still had several twists and turns in the course to negotiate before you entered the finish chute, step over the finish line and received your Finisher Medal.  The goodies at the end were very good and they had Cremies, chocolate milk, sugar cookies, bananas and a bunch of other good stuff for recovery fuel. All of this took place in the spacious Huntsville town park.

On a personal note, I really enjoyed this marathon and would recommend it to anyone. I managed to run a BQ time of 3:58:30 at a 9:06 per mile pace and took 1st place in my old man Age Group (M 64-69)against  8 other runners including me.

Chow Boing!

PS : I signed up for the 2018 Boston Marathon last night when I got home from the Full Monte!

Great job, and congratulations on another BQ! Glad you enjoyed the Huntsville Marathon. I did it once before, and without prior downhill experience I trashed my legs by mile 16. Maybe I will do it again someday with the experience I now have.

Nicely done! I might run this one next year.

From Tom Slick on Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 07:14:03 from 174.148.15.67

Donald Davis - Thanks for the attaboy! The Full Monte is quite the marathon and it's full of downhill running, thankfully it's gentle downhill without a bunch of hills to negotiate along the way. I see your doing the St George Marathon in 15 days and 23 hours. I'm sure that you know what a technical run the St George Marathon is! It seems as though your always running uphill to run down more severe downhill at St Geo. Remember to start St Geo slower for the first 3 to 5 miles and then pick it up to attain a negative over all split in the marathon. Run the second half faster than the first and don't kill yourself on the Veyo hill!

From allie on Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 13:21:30 from 172.4.198.186

this marathon seems like a good one -- i've only heard good things. and creamies at the finish line is always a big bonus. they were out at des news this year, which was a huge disappointment because that was like 85% of the reason why i signed up in the first place.

congrats on the full monte finish and the BQ

From Tom Slick on Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 17:35:25 from 174.148.116.1

Thank you Ms. Allie! When I noticed that Creamies was a sponsor of the Full Monte I knew this race was for me! They had lots of them for everybody!

From Donald Davis on Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 20:00:16 from 96.18.226.22

Tom, I've done STG once before, and had a pretty good experience. I had been scarred by my poor performance at Huntsville and took STG pretty conservatively. This year I think I will push a little more for a good time. You are definitely right though, the first half of STG is noticeably harder than the second half. I think the SLC Marathon is the trickiest marathon I've done in terms of planning for the various inclines and declines throughout. Most of the downhill is in the first five miles, and then you get short steep hills occasionally throughout the rest.

You coached him well and should be proud of his accomplishment. Please tell him THANK YOU for me. He saved me from my dreaded asthma by letting me draft off him especially the last 5K.

How’d the 5 K go?

Race: University of Utah Homecoming 5K (3.107 Miles) 23:51:53, Place overall: 57, Place in age division: 1
Total Distance
3.11

Man-O-Man what a fun day at the U of U Homecoming Scholarship 5K. The day started early when my good friend Troy picked me up and taxied me to the "U". We got there earlier enough to get our bib numbers and goodie packets and take care of the preliminary business before the race started. It was announced that there were 800+ runners for this years 5K. I grabbed Troy and drug him to the front of the mob and showed him how the Theory of Relativity works. (That is line up in front and run like hell and you'll probably finish in front of all the other old guys in your AG)

The race started at almost promptly 8:30am and it was off in a blinding flash, all the really fast people were out of sight in no time flat. So I jumped in and started chasing the pack like a slobbering dog chasing a soup bone.

The first 1.7 miles were somewhat up hill through the campus and then it flattened out for about a half mile, and again changed to a pretty good downhill running course past the stadium and back to the Law Library to the start/finish line. From the beginning of the race I tried to keep upping my speed but I was still feeling a bit sluggish from the Full Monte two weekends ago, so I just settled with keeping my feet happy and moving and not letting any old men pass me!

At the finish line I checked my time and found that I had run a 23:51:51/at 7:40 per mile. I was estatic because I knew that I had to run something in the 23 minute zone. Troy finished in 26:26:02 for a 6th place in his AG.

At the awards ceremony I was one of the first called out and given an award for being the Best Dressed runner, I was just wearing my regular Red, White and Blues from head to toe. As time went on I got called up again for my 1st place prize for for beating the other 3 old guys in my AG(65-69).

OK, that's all she wrote, short race and a short report. Chow-Boing!

From Tom Slick on Sun, Oct 08, 2017 at 11:41:36 from 174.148.34.165

Rhett - You are so right, 5K's are a lot of fun but, I think that they are so much harder than running a marathon. It seems as though you have to get up and Go Go from the get-go and run the first mile fast, and then you have to go faster thru the second mile, then dig down deep and go faster to the finish line. And if you don't you get passed like your standing on the side line passing out water and Gatorade.

Slick. I was just looking at your PRs. Dang! You ran a 17:45 5k in 2008! That a 5:43 pace. Very impressive.

From I Just Run on Tue, Nov 21, 2017 at 06:42:50 from 199.38.187.9

I agree with Rhett ... Very Impressive! On top of that, how many Boston's?

From Tom Slick on Tue, Nov 21, 2017 at 10:23:55 from 174.148.179.60

Rhett - Looks like I got close to lucky one time nine (9) years ago when I was a bit younger! Now I struggle with a 23:something. Oh well, that's life in he fast lane. Here I am almost 67 and I'm still moving it down the road looking forward to another Boston. Now that is and has been my real running dream for so long along with training others to run! Thanks for the atta-boy!

From Tom Slick on Tue, Nov 21, 2017 at 10:35:09 from 174.148.179.60

IJR _ Twelve (12) Bostons in the bank and two (2) more in the heads up bag. Thanks to a fairly decent run at the Huntsville "Full Monte" I managed to get a double "BQ" for the Boston 2018 & 2019.So now the hard part starts, how do I get to the 2020 Boston? I surly would like to make my personal record fifteen (15) trips to the Boston Marathon finish line for me and my Cigar! Thanks for the kind thoughts Preston!

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!!!

Race: Cottonwood Thanksgiving Day 5k (3.107 Miles) 00:26:20, Place overall: 243, Place in age division: 2
Total Distance
3.11

The Cottonwood Thanksgiving Day 5k is a local 5k that is contested ever year on Thanksgiving Day and I can't find anywhere where it says when it started? (I think the first 5k was on Thanksgiving Day in 1967) I attended this race with Troy and Camille. We got to the race early enough to get a warm up run on the course. Right off it was easy to see that the first half of the course was up hill on city streets that seemed to roll on and on. The only good part of this was that the return trip to the finish line was pretty much the same route but down hill with a really mean hill at about the 2 mile mark that we didn't really plan for.  The start of the race was a bit congested with about 1386 runners, dogs and stroller pushers having a fun run on a great Thanksgiving Day. It was 50 degrees with little or no breeze on a partly cloudy morning. The race started on time (9:00am), but it was congested with with so many strollers and dog walkers mixed into the crowd  it was hard to get started into you personal run. Anyway, as I started I noticed that one old guy had lined up way ahead of me and got a really big head start on me, to which I was unable to catch him by the end. So the race is off and running, Troy and Camille and I are off on different races and paces but aimed at meeting at the end. As I progressed thru the first half of the race I felt a bit sluggish running up hill and found myself hoping for the down hill portion of the race to finally appear so I could get some get up and go in my get-along. Thats when I ran into the hill at about a mile away from the finish. I remember seeing the guy that finished  #1 in our age division clear the top of the hill when I was at the bottom. All I was thinking at that time was to keep the feet moving and not get passed by any more old guys between the hill and the finish line. As I finished I got to talk to Paul who is a local who I get to run against in 5ks all over the local area. We congradulated one another and vowed to meet again.

I finished with a 26:20.3/8:30 pace in second (2nd) place in my 65-69 Age Division of 8. Overall I was 243 of 1386 and 174th place of  637 Male Gender.

Troy finished at 29:07 and Camille finished with a 31:48. So now it will be on to the "Beat the New Year 5k" on New Years Eve at Sugar House Park and then the big ramp-up in training for a return to The Boston Marathon in April of 2018......

Life is Good!!!!

Callie didn't quite qualify but she was very happy with her improvement. I believe she will get there for the next one! She's planning on running another one in the spring. I'm thinking about Ft Worth Cowtown or the Woodlands to keep it local. Hopefully we both can qualify in the spring and see you in Boston 2019!

Well that was a great New Years Eve Run ! As usual the Beat the New Years 5k was just great, well organized and full of fun runners . Beat the New Year 5k celebrated its “40th” year last night. I think I’ve done this fun run at least 10 times and plan on doing it many more times in the future! I finished my run thru the park in 23:01 and beat the start of the New Year. At the finish line we were awarded finisher coffee mugs and cookies. Shortly there after I was awarded $25.00 for best costume, I’m not to sure what the to do was all about, I was just wearing my Red White & Blue Stars Bars Running clothing. The to finish it off we all danced and were all of good cheer as we watched the fireworks and passed into the New Year... Happy New Year to all you crazy runner friends of mine! Oh ya, instead of a T-Shirt this year they presented all runners with a light weight full front zipper hoodie!

Congrats on another great race.

I don’t need it but I’m going to train to BQ at Boston 2018 for 2019...The holidays are over and it’s time to hit the two lane black top with some new shoes, yea!

Rhett - This news just in...I went back into my running clothing dresser and have found several more stars & bars running shorts with corresponding running shirts...the total is now at 12 pairs! And by the way, I still have my first pair of stars and bars running shorts that I ran in at the 1999 (2nd) St George Marathon.
