| | Left the house this AM for a Nice 13 mile Long run. Just a few minutes out the door and I was insulted with a light sprinkle of freezing rain, I stopped and put on my garbage bag rain wear and continued. By the time I got to the Porter Rockwell Trail it was sprinkling harder mixed with a little bit of snow, I kept on going. Now I'm out 4 miles and it's decided to really start raining and snowing, much harder. I'm on my way back and by the time I get to the Draper Park and the PRT Trail head ( about 3 miles) it has already dropped 3" of snow on me and my gloves are soaked and my fingers are very cold. This all remindes me of running Boston 2018 except the weather conditions today were much better than at Boston. I took a quick stop at the park bathroom and dried out one pair of gloves on the heated hand dryer, geared myself back up and ran the last mile home in 4" of snow on the ground and a blizzard going off all around me! When I got home I decided I'd pick up the remaining 5 mi at another time, I was done for the day!

Well there it is, looks like a walk in the park at the Boston on Marathon Monday. At least there predicting 65* in the normal Noreaster season! I will just dress accordingly and stick to my plan while expecting the worst and hoping and praying for the best. If anybody is interested you may follow my trudge thru the marathon by texting my bib number 24132 to 234567. It's still 3 days - 1 hour - and 18 minutes till the start and that's plenty of time for the Boston weather to turn around on a dime, not likely but worth a prayer! No running today just good old carb loading till Sunday at 2:pm.....

The 123rd Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:32:25, Place overall: 21690, Place in age division: 288 | | Ok, ok, ok, it was just a fun run at the 123rd Boston Marathon '19 that accomplished all of my pre-stated goals? First and foremost I decided that I would run Boston as a mental, physical and spiritual check on my progress in the three areas listed in this sentence and then take what I've gleaned to the Huntsville "Full Monte" marathon in September and get a double "BQ" for 2020 & 2021. Well I learned that the intensive physical fitness program I have been engaged with for the past year and a half has yielded benefits beyond my wildest imagination. So I will continue with my program! As for my mental attitude, I have a renewed passion for all things and the great spirit to carry on with what I started about 21 years ago, that being; "Running Marathons"!
So I will try to keep this recap of my 14th trip to the "Bean Town" Marathon and my 60th Marathon ever short and sweet. All and all it was a fabulous time in Boston for the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. My good friend Troy and I got into town on Saturday morning too late to run the Boston 5K because of airline delays so we went and tried to get into the expo and found it almost impossible to get into because of the extremely long lines caused by the added levels of security so we went to a Red Sox game Fenway Park, too bad the Red Sox lost. After the game we went back past the Expo and there were still long lines at the entrance.
The next morning, Sunday, we returned to the Expo where we entered rather quickly, found our way to the Bib Number, Shirt and poster pickup and filtered down to the Expo, which was huge again as usual. After a few hours at the Expo we went to the Old South Church for the "Blessing of the Athletes'', such a beautiful old church! Then it was off to the room where I got off my feet for a few minutes before heading out to the government center for the Pre-race dinner, The BAA does such a fine job setting this event up and making it run so smoothly, and then again back to the room to make all the final preparations for Marathon Monday!
5:am Marathon Monday morning it was raining and winding like nobodys business and I was getting worried that this marathon would turn out to be like last years nightmare! But as the morning progressed and I was leaving the room at 8:30 am to go catch my bus to Hopkinton the rain turned into sprinkles and the wind slowed considerably. Upon arriving at Hopkinton at the Athletes Village the sprinkles had all but subsided and the wind continued but at a lower rate of speed. The saving grace in all of this weather stuff was the fact that it was about 58*. Now I found myself in a crowd of runners walking down the long cattle chute route to the corrals for the start of the 3rd & 4th wave runners. The BAA had decided to wave off the waiting times between waves and start them as soon as possible which caused a lot of confusion among the runners...As I joined the other runners in this mixed up rolling start I found myself rushed and not able to do much of a pre-race stretch or even discard any unwanted clothing or gear, I just had to go with the flow and deal with it on the move.
As I started running I continued to remind myself of my plan and to execute it flawlessly. I was off like a herd of turtles doing my regular 3 to 5 mile slower pace at the start of the race, then I began to slowly increase my speed. I made my first very brief stop/slow down at the two mile mark where the bikers at the biker bar had set up a beer hydration station where I had a small cup of beer and was on my way with a bunch of high fives and cheers from the bikers! At this point in the race, about mile 7, it had quit raining and sprinkling and the wind was squarely at my back and the temperature was about 60*. I noticed a Blue Temple of Doom 0n my left and took a very brief stop for what you do in a Blue Temple of Doom and to discard unneeded clothing and got myself back on the road again.
I found my running style to be very comfortable and was not suffering from any of my prior aliments and decided to again continue running my plan without fault to the finish line. My plan was to run this Boston Marathon without aggravating any of my previous injuries to be sure that my therapy worked. At this point it seemed to be right on target. I settled in to a comfortable pace and had a great time running the marathon. From mile 7 to about 17 the sun was out and the temps rose to about 70* which really effected a lot of the runners, as I noticed many drop out for medical attention. I continued to run and interact with the abundant crowds that lined the marathon route on Patriots Day in MA, all while taking in the points of interest along the route. Somewhere in here it started to rain, get colder and the winds picked up. At mile 16 the Newton Killer Chain Hills began which really didn't make much of a difference in my running. At mile 19 or there about the Hash Hound Harriers, the Drinking club with a running problem, had a beer line set up and I again had a small beer to go and I went up and over the fabled Heart Break Hill without missing a step. Then at the top of Heart Break it was the beginning of the down hill portion of the marathon into Boston and the finish line too which I continued to run in the rain, cold and wind and again enjoying all the fans and spectators along the road cheering all the runners to a successful finish.
What else can I say, except that "I Planed My Race and I Raced My Plan" to a successful 14th personal running of the Boston Marathon and a pathway to enjoying (hopefully) many more marathons including "The Boston"!!!!!
As noted above I ran this one in 4:32:25 and I loved every minute of it.........see ya all at the "Full Monte" in September!
|

| Race: |
The Nestle 5K (3.107 Miles) 00:24:51, Place overall: 174, Place in age division: 1 | | It was a good day at the Nestle Springville Art City 5K, and there was Joy in Mudville this day! Got up early today and got ready for my 19th run of the 30th Annual running of the Nestle 5k. Troy picked me up at 5:30am and we were off to Springville. It was about 48* degrees and there was a light sprinkle of rain going on at my place. By the time we got to the race the weather had cleared up and it was about 52*. We did all our race prep and then went for a 1 mile warm up run. When we returned for the w/up run it was just about 4 minutes till showtime. "BANG", it's showtime.... My goal for this race was to Defend my 2018th First Place Age Division win and throw down 8 minute miles. This is a pretty neat but still demanding course. The first 1.5 miles of the course is gradual uphill with a wicked incline hill at 1.5mi. Then the course is virtually down hill to the finish on the rubberized track at the Springville High School track. At the crest of the hill I took a bunch of deep breaths and then started turning over the legs and heading for the finish line. All the while Troy, who beat me to the finish line at the University of Utah Homecoming on October 20, 2018, was just seconds behind me. I told him before the race that if he slowed down or stopped to tie his shoes I would sail on down the road without him. At the 2 mile mark I quit looking back and poured on the coal till the finish line. When I got over the finish line I looked back and there was Troy following me over the line a mear 6 seconds behind. My stats are as follows, Race time: 24:51, Race pace: 8:1, Fastest mile: 7:45, AG Division: 1st of 12, Overall: 174 of 1766, not too bad for a 68 year old guy. Troy ended up 7th in his 50 to 54 AG Div. I'm very pleased with this effort and super pleased with the rehab of my left knee. This is my first race of the season headed back to the Huntsville Full Monte where I fully intend on getting my "BQ" ticket punched back to the 2020 /124th running of the Boston. Troy is training hard and I expect he will accomplish his first "BQ" and run it in 2020. Well that's it, thats all the news that's fit to print.......chow-boing !
P.S. The overall winner clocked in with a 14:44, a 4:45 mp.

The Huntsville Full Monte Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:28:59, Place in age division: 4 | | Showtime at the Full Monte/Huntsville Marathon - September 21, 2019
It was a pretty great day running the Full Monte/Huntsville. At the starting line it seemed to be about 32* or at least you could see your breath. There was a heated tent but you couldn't get all 380 marathon participants in it. Troy and I hung out in the tent long enough to get prepared for the run down the mountain to the Huntsville City Park finish line. At about 10 minutes before the starting command we finished preparations for the race, putting our throw down clothing bags in the cargo truck and then worked our way to the starting line where we met up with our respective pacer and pace groups. I was disappointed to learn that there wasn't an exact match pacer to the pace that I wanted to run the race, so I jumped into the closest one which was the 3:50:00 pace group. This was probably a fatal mistake in my plan. The marathon seemed to start right on time and the herd of 380 marathoners were off and running. I was really amazed at how well I was acclimating to the 8500 ft of altitude and my increase pace. I went on to hit the half way point or my first half split in the race (13.1mi) at 1:56:22, which was a bit faster than I was planning on. Meanwhile Troy was running with the 3:25:00 pacer and was way ahead of me on the course. Earlier before the race began I stated to Troy that if I was able to pass him during the race it would mean that his plan had fallen apart. At the halfway point my race seemed to be going fine, but as my race continued somewhere about 17 to 20 miles out I really started to become fatigued and started to experience some muscle cramping and fatigue in my right hamstring and lower glute all the while suffering reduced pace times. This situation continued to with me to the finish line. Sadly enough I didn't accomplish all my goals for this race but I am quite satisfied with my final results. My chip time for the Full Monte was 4:28:59, a bit slower than I had planned on but better than several of my more recent marathon races. I am most impressed with the recovery of my left knee to the point that I am even able to get out and run at an advanced pace! Troy finished the marathon at 4:18:08 which was an all time PR in his marathoning, almost a 25 minute improvement over his last marathon ! So now it's time to get recovered and get ready to do the University of Utah Homecoming U5K race on Saturday September 28th, I've got to defend my 1st place Age Division Title/ranking from previous years!!!

U5K (3.107 Miles) 00:30:26, Place in age division: 4 | | the U5K (Homecoming 5K)was a blast as usual, it threatened to rain but only sprinkled a couple of times, about 60* at the start and dropping as time went on. I was just too tired from the Huntsville Full Monte to to put out much effort this year so I just went for a fun run. AD: (65-69) AD Pl: 4/9. Maybe next year!

Sandy City Veterans Day/Turkey Trot 5K (3.107 Miles) 00:27:18, Place overall: 79, Place in age division: 2 | | It was a perfect day at the Sandy City Veterans Day / Turkey Trot 5K. The race started at about 10:am and the temprature about 47* with little or no breeze. I set out to take 1st place in my age division but came up short with a 2nd place finish. It seems that a younger man (65) in my age division, (65-69) beat me to the finish line. While we were waiting for the awards ceremony I congradulated "Dave" for his 1st place winning performance, I also told Dave that he should be ashamed of himself for beating an old US ARMY Veteran, me at 68, to the finish line. "BTW", My good friend Troy had a watershed moment and "placed" 3rd in his age division (55-59) for his very first time ever he has placed in any race. It was a great fun day at this Sandy 5k.
