Nice long run. I bet it was kinda cool running in all that fog.

From Tom Slick on Mon, Jan 08, 2018 at 14:32:20 from 66.87.127.62

Running in the fog was pretty neat, not safe for man nor beast but rather nice once the sun popped up. I even had to drop by the house to lose some excess clothing. I finished the run in shorts w/2 wick away long sleeve shirts, no gloves and no beanie.

Excellent workouts and miles this week already and it's only Thursday! Liking those Full Body Workouts you're doing at the gym. I desperately need to do some strength training. I have gained weight at an alarming rate; can hardly fit into my running clothes! uck!

From Tom Slick on Thu, Jan 11, 2018 at 21:01:19 from 174.148.17.10

Smooth - Ya went back to the gym about 4 months ago. I felt like I was loosing strength and stamina like it was going out of style, gaining weight and feeling tired all the time.So back to the gym and I'm really feeling better, much better! I'm doing workouts for tone and strength and life is returning at an amazing pace. I can't believe I let my strength training suffer for so long. But I've got myself on the right track again. In a week or so I'm going to reintroduce swimming into my workout regime along with the weight training, elliptical and calisthenics and get back to doing the jump rope again too!

Smooth, you are way to hard on yourself. You are a great runner/marathoner. And never kid yourself, being a self motivated hard charging is a monumental task, even for me. I’ve had a few devastating injuries and life altering events but I refuse to give up this great sport of running until they peal my cold fingers of my running shoes, that goes for my guns and bible too! Let’s try to catch some runs in the near future.

From JD on Sun, Jan 28, 2018 at 22:26:14 from 75.169.8.113

no 18 mile runs anytime soon! Lol

my only plan is to nail down a consistent mileage base again - I let it all go a few years back and, though I've enjoyed the break, am now going through the process almost as if starting over. do you have any races planned before Boston?

From Tom Slick on Mon, Jan 29, 2018 at 09:34:00 from 66.87.126.199

JD - I like that blog photo of you standing there with skis and not bit of snow in sight? Hey, welcome back to the foot race. Start up easy and deliberate with a goal race in mind and your transition back into Running will go just fine. I see you have done several 50k’s, good on you but don’t start there, do something easy like a marathon 😎! I have not entertained doing any other races before Boston this year. I have opted to go all in for my training to be ready to accomplish my goals at Boston 2018. My main goal is to finish with a BQ for Boston 2019 at Boston 2018.

From JD on Mon, Jan 29, 2018 at 11:22:46 from 73.20.104.180

hey thanks for the advice Tom - i'm not much of a racer as it is - so it's likely i won't race at all this year. maybe if things are looking good i'll enter a half mary or something. since i'm not fast i really don't enjoy races unless i'm going for a PR. luckily however, i love to run so i find a lot of motivation just setting little personal mileage goals etc. i'm really looking forward to running casual 10 milers on any given day again.

your training looks rock solid for Boston. the BQ is well within reach

From Tom Slick on Mon, Jan 29, 2018 at 18:34:08 from 66.87.126.199

From Tom Slick on Wed, Jan 31, 2018 at 16:27:50 from 174.148.166.168

IJR - My marathon training plan weekly is broken down to daily workouts.

Rest Day

Interval

Distance

Tempo

MLR

Long

My Distance/Easy run is a run that usually repeats on Wednesday - Friday & Saturday and are run at a conversational pace, rest, or cross-train with a sustained aerobic effort like Hills, Hill Repeats, Mile Repeats, Yasso's, or just an easy Short run or Medium Long Run. My long Run day is Sunday. Monday and Friday are scheduled Rest Days. Ya know this is all subject to change at anytime!

Whaaa?!!! You ran everyday in this crazy stormy weather this week?!!! YOU DA MAN!!! Boston's gonna be a "walk in the park" for ya!!! I remember one year training for Boston, may be it was my first Boston! I'd go out and run my long run in horizontal snow and my neighbors driving by would roll down their car window and asked if I needed a ride. One time I was running up Suncrest with a fierce wind storm with blinding sand/dirt blast and dodging huge poky tumble weeds and trying to watch for fast moving cars coming down the steep Suncrest road! Yep! Those were the crazy diehard days! HaHa!!!

From Martin on Sun, Mar 25, 2018 at 23:53:53 from 212.88.157.202

Amazing, 22 miles at or near MP is a lot! Those long MP-runs ruined my Achilles last year when I was doing MP-runs of 9, 12 and 15 miles three weeks apart. But I was in a bad shape, weighed too much and didn´t have a good base. All of those things you don´t know about! (-;

Just get in the right taper and you will perform very well!

From Tom Slick on Thu, Mar 29, 2018 at 11:52:42 from 174.148.74.183

Yes Sir Mr. Rhett, showtime is just about here for the 122 running of the Boston Marathon, my 13th. Training has gone very well this cycle and I hope to finish with a BQ time, even though I already have a BQ for 2019. I would like to run a 3:30 but I don't think I have it in this short, fat, tired old man body. I'm just going to play it by ear this year and as I start the race I will judge my fitness, training and will to live and make the decision on the ground how to get from start to finish the best that I can!

Race: The Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:31:54, Place overall: 20654, Place in age division: 236
Total Distance
26.20

Each year's Boston Marathon Marathon is memorable in its own right, and the 2018 edition will be remembered by me from my first steps in training through crossing the finish line on Boylston Street. I will remember this Boston Marathon as the one with the worst combination of foul weather I've encountered while participating in the Boston Marathon since my first run as a participant in 2000.

From the moment I arrived at the Athletes Village in Hopkinton prior to the start of the Marathon I had announced to others and myself that I would be making the decision on how I would run the Boston there in the  atheletes village based on the conditions that were present. At the athletes village when I arrived the conditions that were present and projected to be continuing through the race were heavy winds out of the NE with gusts up to 60 mph. Very cold temperatures and Noreaster type heavy rain. I found myself putting on a rain poncho before getting off the bus because of the poor weather conditions and not wanting to be soaked to the bone before the race even started.

While huddled under the huge circus like tents with thousands of other wet, cold runners that were dismayed with the weather conditions standing in a field of mud and standing water trying to keep our running clothing and shoes from getting wet and our bodies from getting cold before the race. I made my decision that I would run this race but only to finish. I had stated earlier that I have a "BQ" for the Boston Marathon 2019 race so I would run this Boston Marathon to finish, and finish it without getting sick or injured. It was raining so hard and the wind was blowing everything around me so hard that it blew out the announcing system in the tint I was sheltering in before the race so much so that I missed my call to my starting wave and corral and started with a whole bunch of runners at the tail end of the fourth wave.

Even starting at the back of the pack and sticking with my race plan I still managed to pass about 6000 runners on my journey thru the vicious winds, the roads running like rivers and the freezing temperatures. From the beginning of my race until I finished the rain continue to fall, the wind blew like it was going out of style and the temperatures dipped below freezing. My thoughts during my run to the finish line were to finish this marathon as soon as I could and in the best condition I possibly could and then find my way to my room to get dry and warm.

I continued to wear a rain poncho for 26 miles of the race only dumping it about the time I was running from Beacon street to Hereford. On Hereford street there were so many ponchos, rain coats and garbage bags thrown on the ground that it was dangerous to pass on to Boylston street to the finish line.

As I usually do as one of my traditions, I get out a big cigar to lead me to the finish line as I'm passing the huge Citgo Sign at the one mile to go mark of the race on Beacon street across the road from Fenway Park. Not even the horrendous weather could stop me from flying my victory cigar and wearing my red, white and blue patriotic USA flag running clothing to the finish line......

I finished the race in a little over an hour longer than I had planned on running this Boston with a 4 hour 31 minute & 54 second. So with all that in mind, I am excited and can hardly wait till I can return to the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon in 2019. This is the Greatest and Longest running Marathon in the United States of America and I hope to be a part of it as long as I can will my short, fat, old man body down the road to the finish line!!!!!!!

One last thought, I would like to thank the thousands and thousands of people that lined the streets from Hopkinton to Boston and cheered on the runners to finish this race!

My new well used schedule of training for the St Geo Marathon starts today.Everything is up for change or not. My basic progressive daily/weekly training schedule looks like this:

Monday: Rest with stretching & strength training.

Tuesday: sorta long run day, at my own chosen pace and distance.

Wednesday: Low mile run w/ stretching & strength training .

Thursday: Hill w/o’s, Tempo w/o’s, Interval w/o’s, Yasso’s, “Quality not Quality “!

Friday: Rest, stretching &  minimal strength training. That’s it - Rest.

Saturday: 5 or more Running miles @ Marathon Pace. Hard to do but stick with the plan!

Sunday: Long Distance Run @ 45 to 90 seconds slower than MP.

That’s it for the next 21 weeks....

It was a pretty good to run the Des News Marathon 10k. I'm helping Troy train for the St George Marathon (October 6, 2018) and included in the training program I have scheduled in 4 races including 2 - 5ks, 1 - 10K, a 1/2 Marathon and then the St George Marathon... Today we did the 10K where we practiced running a well controlled start and a gradual increase in speed until we were at a comfortable pace for Troy. There was a 10k field of about 1042 runners entered into the 10k this fine day. Starting temperature was 70* at 6:00am,  it was a semi dark start with a very little breeze at about 5 mph and humidity at 26% .

I promised Troy I would run step for step with him though out the race and coach him along noting posture, stride & foot strike, breathing, and over all good race form & focus!

The race went very well and our race strategie was spot on for Troy and myself for that matter. As we rounded the last corner and were about 6 large city blocks ( about 1 mile) and could see the banner over the finish line, we were still running shoulder to shoulder. Then at about 75 yards to the finish, Troy attempted to "Snake" the race away and pulled ahead of me! As I noticed him make his break away I answered the bell and kicked in a faster gear and passed him and beat him over the finish line. I played nice and only beat him by couple of steps. Like I said, it was a really fun 10k.

This 10K is run on a State Of Utah Holiday known as  Pioneer Day / The days of 1847! This is when the Pioneers entered the Salt Lake City Utah valley. During the last 2 miles of the race you get to run down the parade route with all the cheering parade and runners fans.....pretty fun!

I ended this race with the following stats;

Time: 52:23

AG Pos;  3rd out of 20 (M65 - 69)

Gender Place; 199 of 497

Overall Finish Position; 294 of 1042

Pace; 8:27/M

Now we've got 20 days until our next race which will be Porter's Half Marathon which runs from the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon down my favorite run on the Dimple Dell Mt Rd., dam near right past my home on the way to the finish line in the Draper City park. This will be running on my home turf, I know the course like the back of my hand and were gunna have a really great race.......

JD - Troy's a really good friend of mine and I've truly enjoyed coaching him to reach his dreams...He wants to get a BQ and go to Boston!!!!

From Tom Slick on Wed, Jul 25, 2018 at 08:59:24 from 174.148.98.84

Allie, ya the humidity was a little high here for living in a high desert, but it goes away....unlike how Seattle just stays so so humid all the time. Buts that's how it is in the Emerald City! So tell me, is the humidity worse in Atlanta or Seattle?

From Tom Slick on Wed, Jul 25, 2018 at 14:33:19 from 174.148.49.93

Yes I know that I could have cut about 10 minutes off my time if I had not run with Troy, but a promise is a promise and I'm quite pleased with the outcome for both Troy and myself....After running the Des News 10k 9 times, this run was the first time I broke into the top 3 of my AG and it was done on a day that I wasn't even thinking about my personal outcome in the race.

From Rhett on Wed, Jul 25, 2018 at 15:25:52 from 66.185.238.62

You sound like an amazing coach. You want to come pace me at my next race? :)

Did you get some hardware for that 3rd place AG finish?

I was just telling Doone yesterday that I need to start taking Pioneer Day off even though I live in AZ.

Slick--

Got your msg, but not sure how to send you one other than posting here. Yes, I'm still in the game. Kind of. Saw your name on the board at the DesNews 10K (I finished 1st in our AG). I haven't been on here in ages, and quite frankly had forgotten all about this blog. Wish I'd seen you on the 24th. Would have been great to catch up with you. FYI, I'm not running SGM this year. I am running the TOU HM, the TOU Marathon Relay, the Mt Lemon HM in Tucson in November, and various other 5 & 10K's in the area. Hope to see you on the road somewhere! --Pron8r

Not too much to report here. It was a really crappy day running in all the smoke from the local Utah fires and the imported smoke from all the fires in California. It was so bad too breath and twice as bad to look at before you sucked it in! This was the first time that I have run this Half Mary and I did it with Troy. We used this race as a medium long run under load as we train for the St George Marathon in 57 days. At the starting line it was 70* with a very light smokey breeze.  The half Mary starts at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon at the 5400 ft elevation and ended at the Draper City Park. It was a very gentle downhill run where you could kick up your pace if you could breathe.... It actually was a rather nice course and I will probably do it again, hopefully in better air condition. Troy and I started together and maintained a sub 8 minute mile pace for about 5 miles before the smoke choked us out and trashed our pace and race plan. Troy ended up #44th place/106 overall / 7th in AG / 11, I came in 33rd overall and 2nd/4 in AG, about a minute behind a 60 year old guy. Porter's Half Mary grouped my (M 65-69) AG into a 10 year AG of (M 60 - 69) so I had to run with some younger competition in the smoky gunkey air. Oh well, now it's time to get ready to do the St George Marathon in 57 days.......TYI

Burt - Have you ever tried to light a sweat drenched wet soggy stogie at the end of a road race, much less find a dry match to fire it up. The only smoking I like to do is "Smoking" all those youngsters to the finish line of any race I enter into...Matter of fact, I love to cross the finish line with my "Victory Cigar" and immediately turn around and greet the runners behind me stating to them that they had been "Geezered". Beat to the finish by this old man!!!! TYI!

Hi Tom,

Sorry I haven't been present on the blog lately. It's been so hot here I just can't get excited about running. I've been really working on my roping and effort to qualify for the Las Vegas Finals in December. In the last 3 weeks I finally accomplished this goal. These finals pay about 200K to win in each of the two categories I qualified in. So you can probably imagine why my focus has been on that. I will get started running again to run a fall Half and maybe a winter full and then Boston in the spring!

I can see you are still running strong!!!

This week is my last higher mileage week of this marathon (SGM) training cycle. I’m really looking forward to a glorious 3 week taper going into the St George Marathon!!!😎 I need some good quality rest and recuperation Time to get over the dings and dangs that I’ve incurred over this marathon training cycle ! 😎

Rhett - I don't think I have ever welcomed to start of a Taper Time as much as I have welcomed this one! It's been a long hard slog through this marathon training cycle, and I welcome the time to rest and repair all the dings, dangs and injuries so I can go out and kick my butt down the course at the St George Marathon in 19 days and 19 hours.

Decided early to run the entire marathon w/Troy for moral support. The 10 year club banquet was great and there were so many of my past and present friends in attendance. I was about 7 minutes slower than last year, but I still managed to be first in my age group (65-69) of 7 old educated men! I bumped into sweet Ms. RAD and her son Adam (fartlek). Adam is an amazing 8 year old runner and he beat this old man to the finish line this day, attaboy Adam! Adam wasn’t the only body to beat the old Tom Slick to the finish line, Troy my good friend who I trained up for his first two marathons beat me to the finish line for his first time ever! Another well earned attaboy to Troy. Life goes on, Now my thoughts and actions turn to returning to Boston 2019 for my 60th Marathon!

By the time I get started running the Boston 2019 Marathon I will have logged in 24,915 days upon this earth and so many miles that I've lost count, for which I am eternally grateful. So Bro Rhett, it is fun to be able to be changing up my training schedule for yet another run from Hopkinton to the finish line at Boston! Breathing is good. Just thought I would add that.

From Tom Slick on Tue, Dec 11, 2018 at 10:52:10 from 174.148.144.228

Rhett, TomK - Yes, breathing is good but sometimes in the Salt Lake the inversion takes over and were all in the deep soup. The inversion comes and goes with the winter storm cycle and usually rather quickly!

Rhett- it was really cold last week with lows in the 20s, then we got a bit of a warmup this week with the highs in the forties but I’m sure that will end and we will be slipping into the single digits soon!
