16 easy long run miles today on the PRT.......
I submitted my application for the 2012 ING New York City Marathon, this morning!
|
| |
| | Got out and followed up a 16 miler with a 4 mile easy run this am. I think my training/recovery is coming along rather well considering I ran my last marathon only 30 days ago and I'm just 33 days out from my next marathon. |
| |
| | 6 more miles on the road to Surf City USA - 32 days! |
|
| | 31 days till Surf City......Wow, I'm almost back to Taper time. |
|
| |
As I left my home this morning for a 6 mile training run, as I hit the two lane black top I quickly decided that I was going to do a difficult hill run instead at a shorter distance of 4.2 miles. This particular hill is my favorite hill to train on, especially getting ready for the Boston Marathon in April. It's my favorite hill to hate. I have a real Love / Hate thing for running the last miles of Wasatch Blvd where it empties out on 17th East and 11400 South.
In the beginning of the run up to 2 miles the elevation goes from 4714 feet to 5114 feet in vertical increase at an average of 7% incline. Thats a 400 foot vertical increase at 7% in 1.5 miles. Then at the 2 mile turn around I run down the same hill. I'm gunna have to go back and review my garmin data about the mole hill at Boston called Heart Break Hill.
30 days till the Surf City USA Marathon......and the marathon is sold out!

Hey Ms. RAD, I really enjoyed my snow day off yesterday and my 20 miler today was a pretty fun run too. When I left the house it was 26 degrees (it's only 31 now) and I was bundled up like "Little Randy" on A Christmas Story. It was a bit cold and the roads were partly covered with snow and Ice. At least the wind was little or none and didn't need to be contended with. And just for fun the sun came out form behind the partly cloudy skies ever once in awhile.......so, all in all it was a pretty good day to grab an easy long run!
27 days till Surf City USA Marathon.
41 days till The Lost Dutchman Marathon.
98 days till The Boston Marathon. |
| |
| | nice four mile run at Sugar House Park.......training recovery is well underway for Surf City/Lost Dutchman. |

Surf City USA Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:56:24, Place overall: 677, Place in age division: 9
Good Morning Surf City USA.
WOW, is what I've got to say about the Surf City USA Marathon. From start to finish this was a super well organized marathon in an equally relaxed environment. This years event hailed about 20000 entrants, 17000 doing the half marathon and about 2413 running the full marathon and they did it all on my birthday, now how knurly and really "cool" is that! The marathon is limited to about 2000 runners because the course is not completely closed to other traffic in some areas, such as the bike and walking paths on the beach of the pacific ocean. From mile 16 to mile 25 you are running on a black top path on the Huntington Pacific Beach and finishing on the "PCH".
The day before the race I attended the expo that was set up in the parking lot at Huntington Pacific Beach under some great big tents. Everything about the race was set up on the lot including a huge secure tent for your clothing drop bag the next morning and not left unattended in a field like the Utah Valley Marathon. The expo had everything running for sale as usual.
On race day morning they closed the "PCH", Pacific Coast Highway from Seal Beach at Warner Avenue to Beach Boulevard, some 12 miles. The starting and finish line are located near the famous Huntington Beach pier in the middle of the Pacific Coast Highway. It was really neat as the organizers encouraged all the runners to visit the starting line early and often on race day morning. There was "Surfing" music blaring from loud speakers every where! Hey and at the starting line there were two "Woody" vans that lead the runners down the PCH to start the race. I don't think I've ever been to a more runner/people friendly race in my life. The atmosphere there was nothing short of fabulous!
The race started for the wheelchair racers at 6:28 am at about 48 degrees and was followed by the first wave at 6:30 am, bibs elite thru 1999. Hey I was in the first wave right up next to the elites, all six of them. The first wave was off right at 6:30am and the following waves were released in two minute intervals for the full marathon. The half marathon crowd started at 7:45am.
The race starts on the "PCH" and quickly after about two miles turns off into the Bolsa Chica Wetlands for about 8 miles of running thru the local neighborhood and wetlands park area, then back out on the "PCH" for six more miles before you to be diverted off on the black top beach pathway. It seemed like you could see the Pacific Ocean almost every step you took except when you were in the Bolsa Wetlands. Seeing the sunrise as you were starting the race was breath taking to say the least!
Three times on the course, the course causes the runners to double back and you get to see the leaders on the course and the runners following you. It's pretty neat and all the positive feed back you get for all the runners is just super!
At mile 25 you pop off the beach path back on to the "PCH" and make you way to the finish thru the huge crowds of spectators and runners that have finished. It's a pretty ruckus crowd! By the end of my race it was about 68 or 70 degrees.....just plain comfortable!
As for my race this day, it went perfectly. I went out at about an 8 minute per mile pace and decided the I'd hold it for awhile and later on back it off to about a 9 minute pace so as to save the equipment (my body) for my next marathon in two weeks. This was my 11th marathon in 341 days with my 12th marathon in 356 days coming on February 19th at The Lost Dutchman in Arizona. One more marathon to finish my Birthday Challenge of 12 marathons in 12 months!!! I finished the Surf City USA marathon with a 3:56:24. 677th overall out of 2413 runners and 9th place in my old man division of 53 runners.
I highly recommend this race to everybody with a pair of running shoes and sun tan oil and fully intend on running it again in the near future when I'm not so tired.
Oh yea, at the end of the race Kona Brewery and Michelobe light had a beer tent where you could wet your whistle and tell lies to perfect strangers. I sure wish Utah marathons would move into modern times.....

The Lost Dutchman Marathon
Yesterday , Sunday the 19th, I ran the Dutchman in what I thought was almost perfect weather conditions. At the starting line it was about 49 degrees with a cloud covered sunrise. The sun lit up the Superstition Mountains like only a sunrise or sunset in Arizona can happen.
The organization of the Dutchman, which was voted one of the best 12 small marathons in the country, was really second to none. It may have been a small marathon but it went off without a hitch. All the way from the smallish expo to parking at the Rodeo Grounds to the shuttle bus ride to the starting and back to the Rodeo Grounds parking. The course was well marked and the aid station volunteers were all there and in super spirits exhorting the runners on to the finish.
The race started right at 7:am and we were all headed down a very well maintained dirt road through some of the most scenic desert landscape you can imagine for the first 7 miles. Then the rest of the race was pretty much black top paved highways and residential running on rolly polly washboard roads.
So right from the get go at the starting line I made the fatal mistake of thinking that I was feeling as good physically as I was mentally just coming off the Surf City USA Marathon just two weeks ago and started out too quickly. I shouldn't have tossed my real race plan to the wind. Oh well......
Out about mile 16.5 to mile 20 the course reminded me of Heart Break Hill at Boston. These hills weren't terribly tall but their placement on the course wore at you just like Heart Break does. This seems to be where I got a bit tired and my past marathons of the last 12 months caught up with me....I pretty much ran out of high test gas and coasted to the finish on fumes.
At the end of the race as I was stumbling into the finish chute out of nowhere there appeared Ms. Julie Ann "BeMo" who jumped on the course and immediately began to encourage me to speed it up as she encouraged me by running by my side to the finish line. That was a beautiful gesture but I really could have used your super enthusiasm out at the 20 mile mark when I really started slowing down. After the finish I got to meet and greet with Julie Ann and her man Darrell for a little while. Hey Julie Ann, thanks for being there, It was great to see a friendly face at the end of a tough marathon. I'll return the favor at your upcoming Ogden Marathon....see you at the finish
I managed to finish this super marathon in 4 hours and 5 seconds......That was good for an overall finish at 175th out of 530 marathon finishers and a 7th place finish in my male 60-64 AG. And just for fun I got a 3:13:52 Age Graded time. Now its time to focus in on getting ready for the "Boston Marathon" in 8 big wonderful weeks.
Sometime in the near future I will run this marathon again..................It's worth it!

2.5 mile shake down run... Gotta assess the damage and make a plan to get myself ready for the Boston in 54 days!
I've learned over the past 14 months how to survive and save the equipment for the last race of the plan.
Now I've got to have a total Mental, Physical and Spiritual mind shift to renew the focus. The focus is still to survive the tortures of running but now it's time to really get into shape to run lean, mean, long and fast!
So, you all......I see the problem before me, now it's time for me to be part of the solution and make it happen! Look out Boston, here I come!
|
|
| | Went out for a 5.5 recovery / Training run this AM at the Sugar House Park. The run went rather good, no major boo boos or pain. Boston 53 days..... |

|
| | Took off in 30 degree air, 12 inches of snow on the ground, fairly dry roads, for a 6 miler up and down Dimple Dell Rd (some of my favorite hills). Life is good. On sunday I will be 14 days post Dutchman and my recovery is coming along great. Sunday will be a 16 miler in what the weather gypsies say will be about a 50 degree day with no wind and partly cloudy skies.........we'll see....... |
| |
| | Whoops, Must have been looking at next sundays mileage on my schedule. Seems like I only needed to go 12 miles rather than 16. So it was!!! What a gorgeous day. When I went out the door it was @ 41 degrees and by the time I hit half way it had to be over 50. Little or no wind with lots of sun shine and very few clouds. |
| |

| |
That was a really fun run today! I no more stepped out the door for my last really long run before Boston and it started snowing. Now if that wasn't enough, it was blowing snow sideways straight in my face at 20 mph winds gusting up to 40 mph until I turned around to return. The only good part of all that was it was behind me on the way back home, and I was glad to be getting pushed along. Oh well that fun run is in the books and now it's pretty much all down hill to get well recovered and as ready as I can get to do the Boston Marathon in 28 days!!!!! |

Got my BAA 5k Race Information packet in the mail today. I suspect the BAA Marathon Race Packet should be here any day now? |
| |
| | Went out for a nice little warm up 4 mile run. Tomorrow I will do a 12 mile cut back MLR and welcome in good old taper time again. It sure feels strange to run in 60+ degree weather? Oh well.......21 days till the BAA 5K / 22 days till the marathon!!!!!! |
|
| | This morning on the PRT I got out and did a 12 mile MLR on the start of a cut back week and taper time going into the Boston Marathon in 21 days! Get your MoJo on! |

Today is a total rest day from running. In todays mail my Boston Marathon Runners packet arrived. Life is good.........20 days till the Marathon at Boston.
| | 4.5 mile tempo run, as it were! |
|
| | I decided to take an unscheduled rest day today.....I'll get out and do a bunch of Yassos tomorrow morning and work on my speed (or lack there of) training. I'm feeling pretty good but I do have some residule wearyness from my past marathons. Time to load up on the extra sleep. | |
| |
7 mile tempo/hill run @SHP..
And now there are 16 days until the Greatest Running Show on Earth! |
|
| |
Just when I thought I was going to have a lack luster run I go out and have one of those break through runs runs that really felt good. Yea!!!! 10 miles on the semi hilly and quite windy PRT.....
15 days till the Boston Marathon, 14 days till the BAA 5K!
|
| |
| |
I'm just going out for a short 2.5 mile rest/shake down run this am. Looks as though the weather around here is going south as the day progresses.
OK, here we go....it's now 15 days till the Boston Marathon. It's really time to get your taper on. The time for hard training has passed and given way to getting rested and getting any and all the nagging injuries under control.

Here is the Boston Marathon course thru my eyes......this year I will be running so slow I will really be able to see it.
The Start: Hopkinton to Natick - (0 - 10 miles), elevation drops 309 feet The first mile and a half drops sharply but after that it goes rolley polly little hills and gets better about 10 miles out. Start your race out slower than your predicted marathon race pace, probably 5 to 10 seconds slower. I try to hold this pace out to about mile 5.
Natick to Wellesly - (10 - 13.5 miles) elevation drops 45 feet I noticed that this part of the course is full of mild hills, nothing to worry about. Pay attention to the slant of the road here and run in the top third of the road so you won't wander towards the gutters. Start to focus in on your race and continue to quicken your pace to above your predicted marathon race pace all the while preparing for the hills to come. And Baby there coming!!!
Wellesley Square to Lower Newton Falls (13.5 - 16 miles) elevation drops 71 feet The course continues to be the same little hills till you hit the base of Lower Newton Falls at about 14.5 miles (the real half way point in the marathon), then at about 15.5 miles the elevation drops 124 feet in the next half mile which brings you to the "Killer Chain" at Newton Falls which are the steepest and longest on the course. This 3/4 of a mile will wreck your legs if you run it too fast. Stay on the top third of the road to avoid slower runners and to get the best level footing. Get prepared for the screaming women at Wellesley College, nothing I can say can get you prepared for the mile long Scream Tunnel, move to the left of the road if you want to aviod the hand slapping and save the hearing in your right ear, You'll never forget it!
Lower Newton Falls to Cleveland Circle (16 - 22 miles) elevation rises 67 feet to 259 feet at the top of Heartbreak Hill. So get ready to use all your hill training here. The hills terrace up and end with the famous "Heartbreak Hill". then you go over the top to a very sharp decline past Boston College that will torture your legs beyond belief. Heartbreak Hill isn't tough it's just when and where it's located on the course, late and steep! Glide up the hills a few seconds slower than race pace and pick it up and run faster on the downhill slopes.
Cleveland Circle to Kenmore Square (elevation drops 180 feet) At mile 22 look for the cemetery, "The Cemetery of Lost Hope," because if you haven't trained correctly for speed and hills you will be exhausted! In this downhill part of the course you can let everything you have left in the tank go and run for the finish line. Open up and run at a pace faster than your predicted race pace while recovering. Focus and maintain the end is in your sights.
The end: Kenmore Square to the finish line (25 - 26.2 miles) elevation drops 64 feet Look for the Citgo sign, it's about a mile to the finish line from here. This is some great road to be running on, it gently declines to the finish with just a hint of incline on Hereford Street. All I can think from this point on is it's "Show Time" baby. Concentrate on your form and any speed you can muster and get your "Smile" on for the photo at the finish line.
I Love running Boston and I hope some of this helps you do your best in Boston!
Here are some other bits of wisdom, but there just old standard things you do before any marathon.
Negative splits.
Wear nothing new to the race, like your shoes, I like to have a new pair of shoes but I like to have them gently broken in with about 50 miles on them by race day!
Start running your long run trainer at about 10:00AM to get yourself used to running later in the day. Boston starts at 10:00AM for us rank and file runners. (10: am first wave and 10:30 am second wave now)
Take heed to your pottie training, valuable minutes tick by while one rests in the green Temple of Doom. get the job done before the race starts. "The Corn Story"
If you are used to a paticular carb loading meal, you should make preprations to take it with you to Boston. I carry my pasta loading meals with me from home, that way I know exactly when and what I'm eating, no surprises!
Same thing with carb jells, purchase the ones you've trained and run with before, don't take chances using anything new!
Be prepared for just about any type of weather at Boston, I've seen it at 20 degrees and 86. I don't think I like either of them! Be prepared for rain or shine.
Remember your hydration training. It's so important at any race! Start sipping on a 16 oz. sports drink about two hours before the race starts, this will be enough hydration to get you started well hydrated.
And at Boston, sleep as long as you can in your hotel room and try to arrive for one of the later buses because you have to wait around at the athletes village for up to 4 hours before the race. Try to avoid all the extra hype that Boston can produce, remain calm and focus in on your race.

Re: BOSTON 2009! by Tom Slick on Thu Apr 16, 2009 10:28 am
Hey everybody, here's course review by the famous Boston Billy Rogers:
Miles 0-2.5: From an initial elevation of 472 feet, Route 135 drops like a roller coaster as it rambles into Ashland, site of the original starting line, used from 1897 to 1923. The gnarliest section of the descent comes in the first six-tenths of a mile, but Boston's strict seeding system, the size of its field, and the narrow road should help prevent you from careening downhill too fast. This is a good thing, so don't fight it. Stay in the middle third of the road and let the jackrabbits sprint along the edges. You'll get your chance to pass them later.
Landmark: TJ's Food and Spirits, mile 2. Even the leather-clad Harley set gets caught up in marathon mania. This rowdy biker bar, located on the left side of the road, is the first major spectator hangout you'll pass.
Miles 2.5-5: The course continues to lose altitude through this stretch. Resist the temptation to "Bank" minutes for the second half of the race-you'll lose twice as many when you wind up walking on Beacon Street before the finish. At the same time, avoid braking so hard you expend precious energy reining in your strides.
Miles 5-7.5: Around the 10-K mark in Framingham, the course traverses the first of seven sets of railroad tracks. While you needn't worry about having to stop to let a locomotive pass, several members of the lead pack in 1907 were less fortunate. According to Boston Marathon veteran and history buff Tom Derderian, they got separated from the eventual winner by a slow-moving freighter.
By now, Route 135 has flattened out, allowing runners to find a consistent rhythm. "Now you're getting into a groove," says race director Dave McGillivray, a 33-time Boston finisher. If you've ignored our advice and gone out too fast, when you hit Framingham, you need to settle in. "The mile splits you'd planned, those are what you should be running now," says McGillivray.
Landmark: Henry Wilson Shoe Shop, mile 8.5. Although staged on Patriot's Day, the state holiday that commemorates Paul Revere's ride, the Boston Marathon never touches the route Revere and his deputies traveled while sounding the alarm. At the intersection of Route 135 and Mill Street in Natick, however, it does pass the proudly preserved workspace of Henry Wilson, a local cobbler who went on to become Ulysses S. Grant's vice president.
Miles 7.5-12.5: The course undulates as it skirts Lake Cochituate and proceeds into downtown Natick. "Some of the grade changes are imperceptible, but they do help you," says Boston Athletic Association (BAA) coach Michael Pieroni. "You can use different muscles, which lets those that have been taxed for a while get a break." Forget about even splits on the rolling terrain and focus instead on even effort. "Your pace will slow down on the upgrades," says Lisa Rainsberger, the last American to win, in 1985. "But if you keep the same cadence and the same heart rate, you'll be okay."
Landmark: Wellesley College, mile 12.5. Because of the way the course bends, the celebrated shrieks of the school's 2,400 students will reach your ears well before you pass by them. If you don't get chills once you hit this gauntlet of sound, say even the most hard-boiled Boston vets, you must not have a pulse.
Miles 15-16.5: On its way into Newton Lower Falls, Route 135 plummets 150 feet in a half mile, the steepest drop since the opening plunge out of Hopkinton. "It's a terrible hill," says Bill Squires, famed former coach of the Greater Boston Track Club, noting that what makes it so troublesome is the punishing haul up the bridge over Route 128 that immediately follows. "To me, the climb up over 128 has always been the toughest part of the whole race," adds McGillivray. "You don't look for it, because nobody talks about it. And then you say, 'Wait a minute, I'm going up.' And then you keep going up and up." The bridge's exposure to the elements adds to its difficulty. "If there's a weather problem of any sort, this area seems to call it out," says Cambridge Running Club coach Fred Treseler. "If it's sunny, it's always very hot. If it's a windy day, it's twice as bad here." Consider yourself warned. Put your head down, stay focused, and maybe repeat a mantra-something like "This too shall pass."
Miles 16.5-17.5: "If you're under pace, this is the point to really slow it down and regroup, and make sure you're truly getting ready for the last hills," Pieroni says. Anyone who feels their legs fading here should "go to their arms," suggests Rainsberger. Driving your elbows back a bit harder than normal helps bring up your knees. "And that's going to spread out the workload."
Entering the 17th mile, you'll encounter two potentially vital relief stations. In front of the Woodland Country Club, you'll find volunteers distributing Power Gel on both sides of the course. To the right sits an MBTA (or "T," as the locals call it) trolley stop. (Note: All day on marathon day, flashing your official bib number lands you a free T ride. But don't get on it here!)
Landmark: Newton Fire Station, mile 17.5. For the first time in the entire race, the course takes a sharp turn, bearing right at this handsome red-brick building onto Commonwealth Avenue and the first of the infamous Newton hills. Miles 17.5-21: Here we go: Take a deep breath, set your eyes on the road ahead, and motor on, tackling the slopes one at a time as you start up the series of rises that ends with the famous Heartbreak Hill. "The first one is pretty long, but it has the gentlest grade," says Pieroni. Shorten your strides slightly until you reach the top, then switch into recovery mode as you drop 50 feet over the next mile. The second hill rears up just past the Johnny Kelley statue-on the left side of the street, opposite Newton City Hall-and leads to a short, level patch of road that fools some fatigue-addled runners into thinking the worst is over, when Heartbreak proper still looms. Draw encouragement from the boisterous crowds lining the course. Dick Beardsley, who finished second behind Alberto Salazar in their famous 1982 duel, says, "I thought the crowds helped me here more than anywhere else."
Miles 22-25: Before entering Cleveland Circle at mile 22, the race turns abruptly right onto Chestnut Hill Avenue, then left 300 yards later onto Beacon Street. By mile 23, you'll be descending steadily; in the twenty-fourth, the downward pitch becomes even more pronounced.
If you're still feeling good, "the course is finally sweet to you at the end," Rodgers says. "It gives you all this good downhill, and you can just glide." If you're struggling, Rainsberger advises taking things a few shuffling steps at a time. "Break it down into smaller sums. You can see the darn CITGO sign forever, so don't look for that. Look for the next water station or mile marker." As you approach Kenmore Square, beware the Mass. Pike overpass near Fenway Park. It's just a bump, really, but it won't seem like that now.
Landmark: Cemetery Mile, mile 23. "People get to the top of Heartbreak and they say, 'Damn, I made it!'"Meyer says. "Then they go charging down the hill to Boston College, and then their legs are finished." After crossing Lake Street, anyone who commits that error will be left to suffer in relative solitude. Trolley tracks paralleling Commonwealth Avenue on the left keep away supporters. What's more, to the right stands Evergreen Cemetery. "I call it the Cemetery of Lost Hope," Squires says. Treseler adds, "It's really a no-man's-land. All of a sudden, everything goes quiet. It's very easy to become distracted or deflated."
Miles 25-26.2: During his showdown with Salazar, Beardsley tripped over a pothole as the two flew through Kenmore Square. The stumble barely threw him off stride-he actually credits the mishap with loosening a perilously tight hamstring-and in retrospect, it's no surprise he kept going. Once you get this far, nothing will stop you from finishing.
A straight shot down Common- wealth Avenue leads you to a right onto Hereford Street and a final short incline before hooking a left onto Boylston. Keep the legs churning and the arms swinging. And most of all, soak in the Olympian roar-and the view of the finish-once you make that turn. "You've reached the point of no return," McGillivray says. No matter what the race clock reads, "you can claim victory now."
Landmark: Kenmore Square MBTA Stop, near mile 25 and the CITGO sign. Some say infamous bandit Rosie Ruiz walked out of this station and jumped in the race for her ill-gained "First place" finish in 1980. Having earned your medal, you'll want to celebrate. Avoid the Copley Square T (it's closed), and go to Arlington Street, the Hynes Convention Center, or Back Bay Station. And try to stay awake for a postrace party.PRIOR PREPRATION PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE

The Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:10:16
"The real contest is always between what you've done and what you're capable of doing. You measure yourself against yourself and nobody else."--Geoffrey Gaberino
Wow! I don't even know where to start this belated race report of my experience at the 116th BOSTON marathon for 2012. I think I have to load up the "Way Back Machine" and remember what got me to my first Boston Marathon. For me I would say that it was my very first marathon in 1998, The St. George Marathon, that aimed me at even thinking that I could do The Boston. In 1997 at the age of 46 I took on the challenge of running a marathon with my best old friend Joe. He had come to me with the bright idea that we could actually run a marathon at least once in our lives. I trained up and run the SGM, with Joe, in 1998 in 3:39:44 at 47 years of age. Just after the race I told myself and Joe that I'd never do another marathon as long as I lived. Then two weeks later I found myself looking at my time at the SGM '98 thinking that if I had run it just a few minutes faster I could qualify to apply for the Boston Marathon. So what I guess I'm trying to say is, this is where the dream of doing Boston started and now I've completed 10 Boston marathons!
For me the Boston 2012 started on October 2, 1999 when I ran my second St. George Marathon at 3:21:26 at the age of 48 and qualified to apply for my first Boston Marathon in 2000. I really trained up hard to achieve my goal and ran Boston 2000 in 20 degree weather with a 3:52:34 at 49 years of age. What a nightmare running in the cold was that year!
Boston Marathons: 2000-3:52:34 2003-3:54:30 2004-3:56:00 2005-3:37:46 2006-3:29:57 2007-3:34:34 2008-3:30:25 2009-4:42:27 2011-3:45:01 2012-4:10:16...
So here I am at the Boston 2012 at age 61 running the Boston in the second hottest marathon monday in the 116 year history of the Boston Marathon. I had already run the third hottest Boston Marathon in 2003. The experience of running the Boston Marathon is something that I will cherish for the rest of time. I know that I am not an elite marathon runner by any stretch of the imagination and at my best I barely qualify to be classified as a good recreational runner. But none the less, I've qualified and ran "10" Boston Marathons.
I couldn't believe that the Boston 116 th was going to be such a hot one. I started the weather watch about two weeks before race day and was totally amazed at the different weather gypsies forecasts that were being give. The one thing they kept coming back to was the fact that April 16th was going to be hot, just how hot they couldn't make up their minds! In the past I've run "hot" marathons and I knew full well that this Boston was going to be trouble for me and everybody else in it!
At the St. George Marathon 2010, where I ran a 3:30:53 in the blistering heat of the high desert and used this time to qualify for the 2012 Boston, I related the high heat situation to the 2012 Boston Marathon and tried to plan accordingly to survive the 2012 Boston.
It was amazing walking over to the bus loading zone to head out to the athletes village and you didn't need a jacket or long pants.....I knew we were all in some kind of trouble at that point.
In the village I tried to sit quietly by and try to contemplate running the Boston Bataan Death March run.
About 10:am we packed up and headed for the gear bag bus and then to the starting area. I was in the second wave, fifth corral, I just made it there when it was time to head out down the long winding hot road to Boston. I thought I had a pretty good plan to get me there!
Our race started and we were off. I planned to start slow and remain in control hoping for a 3:45:00 race that day.....wow, was I in for a big fat hot surprise.
I was pretty much in control for the first 7 or 8 miles and then the heat really started to pick up. I had previously upped my hydration intake and was feeling good even as the heat started up. Later reports say that it was 88 degrees in the air and about 95 degrees on the black top.
I was doing pretty good, but slowing down as I reached 14 miles. The heat was getting bad and the direct sun was starting to burn the exposed flesh on my shoulders. That’s when out of nowhere Hillbilly Runner (Ronnie) popped up and said that he was having some heat problems and I should just keep on running, see ya at the finish line.
From about the 14 mile area I started taking double cups of water and Gatorade and then pouring two cups over my head at each water stop. the March continues....
The rest of the race then got to be a blur, it was so hot and all I wanted to do was get it over with. It seemed like I couldn't get enough water and I couldn't keep my hands cool, and the heat kept building.
I tried to keep my pace up but it just wasn't happening. It just kept getting harder and harder to keep pushing forward. It didn't take too awful long to figure out I wasn't going to make my planned race time.
I couldn't believe all the runners that were dropping out around and from in front of me. It was awful to see some of the misery that was going on. It almost makes me think that that I could have taken a pass and got into next years race.....too late for that, I was already on the course.
Oh ya before I go on, I got on the left hand side of the road just before the 2 mile mark and met up with my peeps at the biker bar. Considering the outcome of my race I should have stopped and had a 20 oz beer with the gang. Instead, I high fived a bunch of them and grabbed a small cup of beer for the road and kept on moving.
Then again at the bottom of Heart Break Hill the Hash Hound Harriers were having a really big beer party, I really wanted to stop but I really wanted to get this race in the books before it cooked me.
Anyway, I just suffered through to the end of the race getting a pretty good round of applause when I pulled out my cigar and beet feet for the finish.....right at Hereford, left at Boylston, go for the finish line.
I clocked in a 4:10:16. Wow, that was a good 25 minutes slower that my planned finish time. The heat was brutal!
At the end I felt pretty good, I felt like I had planned fairly well and didn't dehydrate too badly on my journey. But I was trashed, that had to be the hardest marathon I've ever had to finish.
Oh well, that’s life in the slow hot lane. Now it's time to get ready to run the Ing New York Marathon in November 2012. Take care everybody.....................
One last thought. I can't help thinking that everything we do as runners is calculated right down to the smallest detail and is controlled with precision. Then when race day shows up we all line up at the starting line and run in what ever weather shows up. All that control out the window with the only thing that we have no control over. "The Weather"!
Tom Slick out...
Thank you to all of my friends who have helped me along the way..... |

| | 5.35 m @ 4:am.......nothing special just building base miles and running in the cool of the early morning... |
| |
| | 5.45 mile, 4:am, Tempo run. It's so peaceful, cool and quiet out runing at this time of the morning! |
| |
| | OK, it was a very nice morning to get out for a short 8 mile hill run. One week from today I kick off my real training for the Ing NYC marathon. TYI..... |
| |
| | 4am 5.34m run this am.... |
| |
| | 5.36m Tempo run @ 4:am. About 54 degrees this am made for a more comfortable run. |
| |
| | 4am, 6 mile Tempo style run. Wow it was about 41 degrees this morning. The roads were wet from a light rain last night....quite delightful. |
| |
| | Friday is rest day......for some? | |
| | 7 am run in the hills.....7.21 miles. Overcast sky with a hint of rain in the air. 55F. TYI..... |
|
| |
Got out for another hill run this am. Same hill coures, same distance. Life is good!
Happy Memorial Day!!!! Thank you to all that have served, are serving or will serve! |
| |
| | Wow, 4:am comes early. Got it out of bed and on the road! It was just about 50f this morning and it was just super peaceful. I think I only saw two vehicles on the road and probably five other runners......I don't know if I'm ready but I doing the Nestle 5k in Springville Utah. Hope to see You there! |
| |
| | rest day before the Nestle 5k.... | |
| Race: |
Nestle 5k Art City Days Family Run (3.1 Miles) 00:23:59, Place in age division: 1
This was the 12th time that I have attended this great family race. It's got to be the most friendly and most competitive 5K in Utah!
Again, there isn't any place I'd rather be on the first Saturday in June to run a 5K! The Nestle Art City Days 5k is an intuition that deserves our respect.
Again, it was a beautiful morning to run in Springville, the sky was overcast and the temperature was at @ 62 degrees with a bit of a swirling breeze.
Again, I lined up at the front of the race near the starting line to effect my very old race strategy, that being, if I start in front of my age division runners I can stay in front of them till the end.
The race went off at 7:30 am Sharp! Again, I use again, this is my 12th time to run this fun run. It's got to be the most competitive fun run anywhere!
The signal went up to start and I did, I thought that I had paid enough attention to a pre race warm up but by the time I was out to about the first quarter mile mark my lungs were burning and I thought I was going to give up the will to live. It was time to lace 'em up and keep up the pace as planned. I caught my breath and told myself to keep the faith and keep on running, it's only a 5K and your almost done already.
By then I was at the hill where the race make a turn around and you head back to the high school and the finish line. If you can't run the length of this short hill at a steady pace you will lose many many places in your race to the finish and I "did not" take the piano from the bear on the hill this year!
So around the corner I went with all kinds of younger runner passing me, but to my delight I was still "Geezering" bunches of other runners young and old!. Sometimes this can be a bit heartbreaking but one must remember that this race is really all about you and the clock from start to finish and if you happen beat anybody else to the finish line it's just the sweet icing on the cake of running.
At the two mile mark I sucked down a cup of water that I don't think that I really needed but it was there. I had my brief water break slowdown and then it was off to the finish as well as I could get my short, fat old man body down the road.
I pushed on and made the turn at the high school and entered the big red rubberized track and tried to put on my best face and finish the race to the finish. And yes Brother HillBilly Runner, I sported my big cigar and finished my 12th Nestle 5k.
23:59 (un-official time), 1st. Plc. 60-64 men.
Again, at the raffle I managed to catch a Frisbee and then was completely skunked from any of the other prizes that they gave out. But one of the younger kids in our running party managed to win an I-POD. Good on Grace, this was her first run "ever". What a great day for her!
What can I say, I had a ball running this yearly classic. I got out and gave it the best shot I could, again! This race gives me hope that this years racing plans will be fun and successful after last years brutal campaign of multiple race running.
PRIOR PREPRATION PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE |
| |
| | 4 miles at 4 am......Yowzza, it was hot out there this morning....Like 73 degrees. I'm sure missing winter! |

| |

| |

| |
| | rest and prepration day for the Wasatch Back.....Sure hope the whole team shows up, 'cause I'm not running extra legs.....Pray for snow! | |
| Race: |
The Wasatch Back, RAGNAR (3.8 Miles) 03:37:29
I should be out on my first leg running in the Ragnar about 3pm today...
This news just in......I ran my first ever Ragnar.
#1. Leg #10, 2:57 pm June 15, 3.8 miles, 32:52. Then a few hours later I ran my second leg of three.
#2. Leg #22, 3:35 am, June 16, 7.5 miles, 1:11:29.
#3. Leg #34(The Ragnar), 3:38 pm, June 16, 4.0 miles, 53:53.
I have no idea how our team did in the final standings, but I'll find out soon, I just know what I did to be the best team player I could.
Running the Ragnar is a totally different experience from anything I've ever done in organized running. I knew this when I agreed to be a "invited" member of a "regular" mixed male and female team running the Ragnar. I knew it would be different going into this event and decided to make it the best experience I could, for me and the team, and it was different.
Like I said, this Ragnar stuff is different. 12 runner people, trapped together in 2 sub teams sharing the cramped quarters of 2 vans for the best part of 24 hours plus running a mental and physical endurance event taxing mind, body and spirit in a social setting. What a dynamic!
If your not into close quarter living with others this event may not be exactly for you, then again doing the Ragnar or any other relay event like this one is not going to be a fun event for you. It kinds of reminds me of my first two marriages. But never mind that, that’s a whole different story best told over a stiff glass of Jack Daniels on the rocks.
Anyway, In it's own perverse way the Ragnar is a character building experience and I loved it for what it is and isn't. It was one of the most unorganized , organized clusters of I don't know what.
I don't really want to go into the nuts and bolts of this "race" here and now, but I do want to say that doing the Ragnar was a great experience that I'm glad that I participated in. I don't know if I'll do it again but I know that I did.
|
| |

| | Rest day getting ready for Des News 10K tomorrow. |
| Race: |
Deseret News 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:49:15, Place in age division: 12 | | The Des News Marathon and 10K was today, July 24, 2012. It was a great morning to run except it was a bit on the warm side and the humidity was a bit high.
I met up with Marcie near the front of the real starting line, the PoP line, which was just a few feet away from the official starting line. As I was crowding my way to the front of the great mass of runners, out of the blue Ms. RAD found me and wished me a good morning and a great race. Marcie was really up-beat and ready to run, so much so it lifted my spirits, enough so I ran this race much better than I had felt like running.
Maybe it's just me but it looked like there were fewer 10K'ers this year than in the past.
The crowds for the parade were out in droves, many had slept on the parking strips over night and were up and moving about cheering for runners as they went by. I had a pretty good race for not having my whole heart into it.
Somebody said go and the hurd was off and headed for the finish line and I was in the mix trying not to get run over by all the younger faster runners in the pack. I was quite surprised that I was passing bunches of runners at the beginning of the race.
I felt pretty good the entire race while I managed to average a 7.5 minute per mile pace. Not my best but, oh well. I ended up with my unofficial "Garmin" time of 49:18:xx. This was my longest elapsed time for my fifth trip down the Des News 10K course. Of course my best time at this race is 43:34:xx, maybe next year I will set my all time best 10K time?
Anyway, it was a fun day at the Des News 10K to be on this side of the Dirt Nap........You all be careful out there......God Bless........TYI

| | rest day for race prep for the Provo Trail 1/2 Marathon. Tomorrow morning. |
| Race: |
Provo Trail 1/2 Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:49:36, Place in age division: 1
I love doing this race. Out of the 20 years this race has been held I 've done 15 of them. Crazy Curt seems to do things a little different than other race directors but his heart is in the right place and he manages to pull off a pretty good 1/2 marathon down the Provo River Trail.
It was about 63 degrees at the starting line which was fairly nice, but once we got going it heated up rather quickly. Since the trail is tree covered most of the way there is shade on the trail that seems to keep you out of the direct sunshine most of the race.
At the half way point you come off the trail and run up the frontage road for about a mile and a quarter of some pretty stiff uphill runningr. Then its most generally down hill all the way to the finish line that winds back down to the River Woods shops on the river Trail.
None the less I had a great day, I ran with two new friends and I actually got to play coach to a young lady that was running her very first 1/2 marathon....I did so well she beat me to the finish line by about 5 minutes.
I was a bit slower this year only turning in a 1:49:36, but it was good enough to place 1st in my 60 - 64 AG. My plan was to make this a training run to get me ready for the New York Marathon in 84 days!!!!!! tyi....

| |
Social Media/Controversy Cancels the NYC Marathon It was a tragedy - and we don't mean "SuperStorm" Sandy, we mean that politics and Social Media caused the cancellation of the 2012 New York City Marathon. We live in New York and can report - as the mayor's office stated in their cancellation statement - that holding the NYC Marathon would have caused no hardship to the storm cleanup efforts. Somehow, however, the decision to cancel was made without concern for the damage to numerous businesses, athletes, city revenue, individuals and the sport - ouch. While, with no "controversy," Times Square was lit up and using enough energy to power any small city in the nation, while tourists were visiting Broadway shows and while New York sports teams were playing their contests, the Marathon was canceled - why pick on the runners and the one activity promoting health? The immediate and long-ranging damage to running may be incalculable:
we visited the marathon expo where many small running-related businesses rely on sales to power their year. The photo vendors and the small companies that provide the keepsake souvenir boxes will see no revenue to offset their costs and some may not survive. Similarly, dozens of other running-related companies that we love saw meager expo sales and will now suffer if they can continue.
many had already arrived to New York, but many more canceled or shortened their trips. We estimate 30,000 hotel nights were lost - why do something to hurt the hotels and lose city tax revenue when it is needed?
the professional athletes who had put their eggs in the basket of the NYC Marathon and expected prize money to support their continued ability to live as professional athletes and inspire the rest of us will be suffering, some may be forced to curtail their training as they seek other ways to make money.
other local businesses that rely on marathon day were hurt. I stopped in my local bagel restaurant (a tough business) on West 72 St. and it was fairly empty. In the past they have relied on the finisher and spectator traffic on Marathon day as their busiest day of the year, now lost.
the New York Road Runners, a non-profit that does much to support youth running and professional running programs, will have lost significant funds that will no longer be available to support running - the ripple effects will be great. Ouch... In all, canceling the marathon helped no one and hurt many. With the negative effect on running businesses, professional athletes and even the New York economy; MarathonGuide.com's position is that this was one of the worst political decisions ever. While most of the 40,000 marathoners who were forced to give up their day of a marathon will get over this blip, the effect on the business and professionals who relied on this event is larger than most might realize and we expect there may be long-ranging effects.
New York City Marathon Canceled - The Official Statement Joint statement from Mayor Bloomberg and NYRR President and CEO Mary Wittenberg: "The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City's life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch. While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division. The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination. We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event -- even one as meaningful as this -- to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track. The New York Road Runners will have additional information in the days ahead for participants." [editors note: while this was a "joint statement," we're pretty certain the decision came down from the mayor's office. The statement clearly states there was no rational reason to cancel the marathon, but rather "controversy...division...and...a cloud" caused the cancellation. The NYRR tried to offset this controversy by donating $1million and finding another $1.5million to donate, but even with that $2.5mm++ support, it was not enough to change sentiment... And while other professional sports events went on and most of NYC and Times Square hummed along; the marathon was made a scape goat and canceled.]
I will never consider returning to NYC to run their marathon. Not even for a visit!

| | Oh boy was that a tough 14 miles. The winds were averageing 25 mph and gusting to 60 at times. I was getting blown off the running path at times. Oh well, I got my miles in and other than the wind it was a pretty good day to run. Hey it was about 60 degrees. |
| |
| |
as much as I want to go out and do about a 4 miler I am just going to hit the weight room tonight and honor my running rest day.
| | 4 easy miles in the dark...........at least it didn't rain on me. |
| | 7 mi W/4 mi @ MP. 43degrees, sunny and nice! |
| |
| |
what a great morning for a run. I woke up to the snow falling and a temperature of 26 degrees and no sunshine. I had my customary couple of cups of decaf coffee and a banana watching my favorite political main stream media shows. Then it was time to get out and get the job done. It was still 26 degrees. Well during the long slow distance run it snowed on me, it was windy in places, the sun peeked out a couple of times and I stepped on wet roads, snow covered roads and trails and all the other variations there of ......Well I gotter done....56 days till the Surf City USA marathon...................tyi and now its up to 29 degrees outside. |
| |
| | 4 mi easy run............... |
| | 8 mi repeats (3X1 mi.....7:23 fastest) |
| |
9 mi w/6 mi @ MP.
51 days till Surf City USA Marathon. |
|
| | No miles today, I got snowed out......or in which ever you prefer. I will admit I did have a better time attending the activities that I did rather than run in the snow and slush and bitter wind...... |
| | Oh what a wonderful day to be alive and running. My Long run started out this am at 28f with 10 to 20 mph gusts. I chose my most favorite killer endurance run up and down Dimple Dell Road, which is an out and back double up run to get in my 20 miles. Did it, done it, put it in the books.......now I'm only 49 days away from Surf City USA........Wow, all this hardship training to go run up and down the coast highway in california weather! |

Oh heres a letter I got from the Ing NYC marathon folks.......
Dear Marathon Runners:
Thank you all for your patience during the last seven weeks as we have worked through issues related to the cancellation of the 2012 ING New York City Marathon. Hurricane Sandy was a devastating event for our city, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families as they work to rebuild their homes and lives.
We are sorry that it has taken us longer to resolve these issues than we had originally hoped. We have been working to offer the best possible solutions in order to meet the needs of the many different groups associated with the Marathon.
Our goal was to offer a range of options to each of you so that you can choose which option works best for you.
MARATHON RUNNERS
All 2012 Marathoners may choose one of the following three options:
|
• |
Option #1 - Refund. While NYRR has always had a no-refund policy for the Marathon, given these extraordinary circumstances, we are offering runners who were entered in the 2012 Marathon, and were unable to run due to the cancellation¹, the opportunity to obtain a full refund of their 2012 Marathon entry fee (excluding the $11 processing fee); OR
|
• |
Option #2 – Guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon for 2013, 2014, or 2015. Entrants in the 2012 Marathon who choose this option will be granted guaranteed entry to the Marathon for the year they choose. Runners will be required to pay all processing and entry fees at the time of application (in the given year), with fees maintained at the same rate as those paid in 2012; OR
|
• |
Option #3 – Guaranteed entry to the NYC Half 2013. Entrants in the 2012 Marathon who choose this option will be granted guaranteed entry to the NYC Half 2013, to be run on March 17, 2013. Runners will be required to pay all processing and entry fees at the time of application. Availability will be limited.
|
¹ Applies to runners entered in the 2012 Marathon who had not cancelled prior to October 24, 2012.
|
|
CHARITY RUNNERS
All runners who signed up to run the 2012 Marathon on behalf of Team for Kids or one of the official ING New York City Marathon charities and obtained their entry from NYRR will be offered the same options. The fundraising you did in connection with the 2012 Marathon will entitle you to any of the options above. If your 2012 Marathon entry fee was paid through your charity partner, you will be contacted directly by your charity.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL PARTNERS
All international runners who gained entry to the 2012 Marathon as part of a travel package with an official ING New York City Marathon International Travel Partner will be contacted directly by their International Travel Partner representative to facilitate their options.
TICKET-HOLDERS FOR OTHER RACE-WEEK EVENTS
Ticket-holders for any of the following events will be offered a full refund:
|
• |
Marathon Eve Dinner
|
• |
Reserved Grandstand Seating
|
• |
Blue Line Lounge Presented by Tata Consultancy Services
|
• |
Marathon in a Motorcoach
|
• |
TrackMyRunners™ via TXT
|
Those of you who were entered in the cancelled 2012 NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K will receive a separate e-mail outlining further details.
|
|
THE OPTION SELECTION PROCESS
Individual e-mails will be sent to all runners on January 10, 2013, and information will be posted on the Marathon website, providing further details and terms and conditions for the obtaining of refunds and the choosing of an option. The option selection window will open on January 11, 2013, and you will have until January 25, 2013, to choose your option, so we ask that you please act quickly once you receive the instructional e-mail, as there will be no default option.
Please choose the option that works best for you. If you have any questions prior to receiving our instructional e-mail on January 10, please do not hesitate to contact NYRR customer service at customerservice@nyrr.org.
On behalf of all of us at NYRR, thank you for your patience and support. Our commitment is to work hard over the coming year to serve our runners and community and to return the ING New York City Marathon to being our city's best day.
Yours in running,
Mary Wittenberg President and CEO

| |
| | Started out to do a 9mi speed trainer but ended up with a 6 mi easy run. The snow got a little out of hand and I was dressed to warm for the conditions. 41 days till Surf City.... |
| |
| | 11 miles on a sub freezing day.............. |
|
| | 4 easy miles as called for in my schedule..........38 days till "Surf City".......... |
|

I think that todays 16 mile long run trainer was just about the worst day of training I've had in many many years. I started in the very low 20's for temprature and it improved to the mid 20's only to get windy and drop the wind chill temps to the teens. Uck!
Oh well, "What you see is what you get"! Get off your dead ass and get out there and getter done! |

Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following? The extra mile. ------Gary Ryan Blair
