New Years Day 5K (3.1 Miles) 00:22:33, Place overall: 10, Place in age division: 1
This was kind of a new experience for me. I ran the Beat the New Year 5K
at Sugarhouse Park last night to end my 2010 running season and 10
hours later I ran the Draper, Utah 2011 New Years Day 5K to kick off and
start my 2011 running season odyssey.
I dragged my tired old man
butt out of bed and got to the park at about 8:30 am and promptly
registered for this races 1st annual. The really cold guy behind the
registration table told me that there were about 250 runners signed up
for the race ranging from 12 years old to 74. With a little bit of
prodding I found out there were only two other old farts in my age
division signed up.......Wow, I said to myself, I get no less than 3rd
place just for showing up!!!
I grabbed my bib and stuff and
quickly drove home and waited there in the comfort of my heated home for
the proper time to return to the race site. I drove back to the park at
about 9:45a and promptly got out and did a mile or so and got the old
bones and joints warmed up. I then worked my way to as close to the
front of the pack as possible but met with a lot of resistance from a
lot of the (slower) fun runner crowd that had beat me at my own game.
So
the race started pretty much on time, 10:a, and I had to duck and bob
and weave through about 50 people before I could get into some clean
running space. What was really neat about this race is, it was held on
the Porter Rockwell Trail, one of my favorite training trails. The
course was an out and back and I knew it all too well.
When I
broke out in to the open running I quickly passed a bunch of pretty good
runners as I worked my way into sight of the leaders. At the turn
around point I counted the runners coming back and found that I was in
13th place overall at the time, and none of them looked like they were
anywhere close to my old man age and division. So from the turn around
point to the finish I knew that the trail was aided in the runners favor
and I could increase my speed to the finish. Which I think I did.
Oh by the way, at the start of the race it was 10 degrees.
So
I started my return to the finish line by increasing my speed. I even
managed to pass three more runners on the way back and I stepped over
the finish line with a 22:33.2 time for the 5K, some 8 seconds slower
than the 5K the evening before. A 7.15 min. mile average. According to
my garmin my top speed of the run was at 5.2 min per mile. An effort
that garnered me a 1st place blue ribbon in my age division.
The
overall all winner was "Craig Green" with a time of
17:25 something! I had a really great time running this 5k and the
other one just 10 hours before.
Happy New Year you all..................

The Cowtown Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:44:19, Place overall: 135, Place in age division: 2
The Cowtown: This was my first venture into the Great State of Texas marathoning and I did so at the behest of my very good friend and his family, Marc! So I will start off with thanking Marc and his family for their more than generous hospitality for my stay with them. I felt rather prepared to do the Cowtown with lots of prior training. I flew into Ft. Worth on Friday and Marc picked me up and showed me the sights. We went on into expo and picked up our race packets and got to meet and greet lots of fellow runners and friends of Marc. I just happened to know one of the volunteer race Directors who managed to sheppard us around. He took us past the lines to get our bib numbers and later on handed us our finisher medals at the finish line. All and all the Cowtown Marathon was a really first class production. We got to the Will Rogers Arena at about 5:20 am on race morning, the 27th and went to find Marc's Pace group meeting and were pleasantly surprised to be part of a Sunday morning "Runners" church service. What was really neat was that the runners could wait for the race to begin inside the Will Rogers arena, with lots of bathrooms and such. Shortly after the service we went outside to the starting corrals where I hung around with Marc and got to know a lot of his running friends and his pace group. It seemed like he had a beginning group of about 45 members of the pace group. The Star Spangled Banner played and a few announcements played and the race was off in a two corral start.
The race was new to me this year even though Marc had driven me around the entire course, at least I had a really good feel of what and where the course was going. The race started pretty much on time with full marathoners and half marathoners mixed together. The wind was so hard at the first that the US and Texas flags were fully displayed and snapping in the wind! That was the last time the wind was at our backs till the 19th mile of the race. At mile 19 we turned the bend and headed back to the start/finish area with the same wind, only at our backs. Sure was nice to have a boost at the end of the race. Oh well, For most of the race I tucked in behind Marc and his pace group and did as much drafting through the wind as possible and I think I saved up enough energy to finish the race in a pretty strong fashion. Out on the course there was great crowd and fan support, it seemed like every body had set up their own water stops for the runners. The Cowtown Marathon people had done a great job of getting their own aid and water stops out in the right places with lots of volunteers. And the support from the "TCU" community was fabulous. I thought that I ran a pretty steady race with an overall time of 3:44:19. My best mile was at 7:09 and my fastest recorded time was 5:31 with my average pace being at 8:33 per mile. This was all good enough for a 135th place overall and a second place in my 60 - 64 year old mans Age Group and a BQ. Some old guy beat me out of first place by about 4 minutes, I think. This would give me a 3:02:55 Age Graded time!!!
Anyway it was a great marathoning weekend with family and friends in Texas. Thanks Marc, I can't wait to return the favor in the future!!!!

Ahh,and what a fine run on the PRT. The sun wasn't out, the path was wet and slushy and there was just a little breeze on the northbound leg of the run. And there were critters all over the place. Must have seen about 50 Mule deer, 2 or more skunks, 1 little starving golden/red fox and a whole bunch of dogs and cats. Amazingly enough not a single bird anywhere when there were earthworms all over the blacktop pathway!

The Boston Marathon..... Report yet to come....
What can I say, I've done this race nine (9) times now. Not in a row, but nine (9) times now none the less. Other than one unfortunate incident this marathon race experience was nothing short of "PERFECT"!
I arrived in Boston early Saturday the 17th and quickly jumped on the "T" and got my bags to the hotel so I could get myself to the Expo and spend a bunch of bucks on stuff that I probably didn't need, as usual. Got my picture taken for a mock-up of the Runner's magazine...oh for joy that was great and I'm in the drawing for an electric Leaf. I was amazed that I didn't see more personalities at the expo.
The day progressed and I met up with my compatriot Bro Ronnie from Kentucky and we returned to the Expo for more fun and excitement, more than a human should be able to have in one place for an extended amount of time.
It seemed to be a whorl wind of activity from the get go! After the Expo we attended a dinner party with our gracious hosts, Smooth and Larry at the best Chinese restaurant, the dinner was fabulous. We had about twenty-five (25) of our Forum Flyers and Fast runners Blog runners attend (and you know who your are!). It was a really neat experience to meet up with the extremely talented Ms. Amber G. This little woman was invited to come and run with the Elite women at this year s Boston Marathon, her Bib was "F 43"!!!!!! Way cool to be in the presents of Boston Marathon greatness!!!!
I had so much fun I can't remember the whole experience. I got up early Sunday and kind of ran the BAA 5K as a shake down jog to get ready for the marathon Monday. It was a really well organized run. Before the 5k started the throng of runners was treated to a little welcome speech by the famous Katherine Switzer, the first woman to almost get taken out of the Boston Marathon when women were not allowed to run the marathon. She was pretty cool. Then five (5) time Boston Marathon winner Bill Russell got to speak just before they joined the rest of us and ran the 5K. Too cool!!! My dear Sis, Ms. Marcie (Canyon) got out of bed and came and ran the 5K with me. Thank you so very much Sis! I remember we returned to the Expo on Sunday for a second or third trip there to buy more stuff. I really think it's a shame that the company that used to sell the DVD that chronicled your race at Boston is no longer in business, I really miss this service! Then it was off to the Pre Race Pasta Party after a mid-day rest and recuperate rest period. The pasta party was great. Lots and lots of runners taking the excitement of the weekend. I love it, it rejuvenates my soul to see so many first time runners getting so worked up to experience the greatest running show on earth. After the pasta party we entertained ourselves at the oldest continually operating tavern in America, the Bell in Hand! Wow, it was established in 1795.....Obviously the tavern was not in the original building but....Oh well we got back to the Radisson about 7:30 p that night and continued the preparation for Marathon Monday.
OK, its 6:15 am and as a group we met in the lobby of the Radisson and marched over to the bus loading zone to be transported to the athlete’s village before the marathon began. It was all too much fun swapping stories and sharing personal experiences to help bolster your own race plan and help others sure up their plans to get through the impending marathon. As the morning began the weather was perfect, you couldn't ask for better conditions. I mean really, you couldn't ask for better conditions because you get what you see. The Wind was blowing pretty hard at times and in the 45 degree temps it got pretty chilly at times.
Again I say the day was just "Perfect" for me. Everything I planed for happened just as I had envisioned it to happen. "PPPPPP"! I got in my pre-race trips to the "Green Temple of Doom" right on time! After dropping my bag off at the bus it really seemed like the wind let up and the walk to the starting was a bit chilly but pleasant. On the way to my corral, #4 in the second wave, I again met up with Ms. Sis who reminded me where my corral was and that I should get up there. I had offered to run the marathon with her but she opted to send me on my way to fend for myself.
I arrived in my corral and then gently began to make all my final adjustments before the second wave got to sign to move-out. I got in some final stretching, finished off my last few swallows of sports drink, lit up my Garmin, opened up a new stick of gum and got my "Hollywood’s" in place for the fun run ahead. I reconfirmed that my goal for this race was 3:45:00 and reviewed my entire race plan in my head as I stood there waiting for the starting signal.
Then it was show time......we were off and running and I was already watching my Garmin making sure that I didn't go out too fast as bunches of runners scurried past me. At that time all I could think of was that I would see them all again nearer the end of the race when they pay for their sin of moving out too fast in the early miles of the race. I tried to hold my pace to about 8 minute miles those first few miles. At mile two (2) I ran past my good ol' friends at the Biker bar on the left side of the road, I did the high five thing with about a hundred bikers lined up on the road side curb. I would have stopped for a beer, but I didn't see anybody with an extra beer in their hand calling out to me this year. Oh, well, maybe next year. So it was back to business....I got my head into what I was doing again and got my tired butt down the road. The whole race just folded out in front of me just as I panned.
The day time high temperature on the course never seemed to get over 60 degrees so the run was quite comfortable. Must have really comfortable for this one guy that I passed along the way. It was some guy that was undressed up like a caveman! Yea, he was running in a brown loin cloth he cut from a bath towel and grunting at all the spectators as they would cheer for him along the way. He was even running totally barefoot.
Then I hit the half way point in the race, and saw that I was at 1:48:00 and thought that everything including my race plan was progressing quite well. I continued along and then I was into the “Scream Tunnel” of women at the Wellesley College for wayward women. It was the loudest mile long bunch of screaming women I remember at The Boston Marathon, I even took the time to slap high fives with about three/fourths of them.
After the “Scream Tunnel” it time to take stock of your personal fitness levels and re-calculate your plans to get to the finish line of this race.
I decided that my race plan was solid and continued to do what was working for me. I think I took a plain power gel and a cup of water at the on coming hydration station. I had been taking on hydration at all stations because I didn’t want the rising temperature and de-hydration to sneak up on me as I negotiated the “Killer Chain” in the hills of Newton.
The hills seemed to just melt away as I tried to keep my steady pace too and through the infamous “Heart Break Kill”. My plan was to go just a little bit slower up the hills and pick it up just a little down the back sides. It worked. By the time I hit the backside of “Heart Break Hill” and took stock of my mental, physical and spiritual well being I said to myself, I did the first part of this race right and I ready to give it a great go for the finish line. I tried to pick up my pace a little and move myself down the road till I could see the CITGO Sign and the right on to Hereford leading to left on the Boylston and to the painted finish line stripe on the road at the finish. As I approached Hereford I retrieved my victory cigar and pointed it towards the finish line and followed it home.
Along the finish stretch I heard the wild and uncontrolled screaming of our very own Forum Flyers number 1 cheer team, it is so great to get that raucous encouragement in the final stretch to the finish line at Boston. Thank you “Larry”!!!!!!
Well, there it is……I had the “perfect” day at the Boston Marathon. It all went as planned! I finished the race with an official time of 3:45:01, well with in my ability and plans.
Then it was off to dinner at Legal Seafood with all the Flyers for a wonder meal, great friendships and learned that the first lire hasn’t got a chance in this bunch of esteemed and accomplished runners of the Boston Marathon. After dinner it was on the Post Party at the House of Blues and about all I can say is it was fun and what happens at the post party in Boston stays in the post party in Boston…………..so, say “Goodnight Dick and turn out the lights and don’t let the door hit you in the ass as you leave”.
If I think about it later I will post my mile splits…..TYI ! Thanks for taking the time to read this lengthy bag of wind and whoey!

The Boston - 2012....
For the 2012 Boston Marathon, qualifying times must be run on or after September 25, 2010. The acceptance of official race entrants will be based on qualifying times, with the fastest qualifiers (in relation to the qualifying time for their age and gender) being accepted first until the race is full. For more information on our revised registration process, visit our registration page. All qualifying times are subject to review and verification.
The qualifying times below are based upon each athlete's age on the date of the Boston Marathon in which they are participating.
2012 Qualifying Times (effective September 25, 2010) Age Group Men Women 18-34 3hrs 10min 3hrs 40min 35-39 3hrs 15min 3hrs 45min 40-44 3hrs 20min 3hrs 50min 45-49 3hrs 30min 4hrs 00min 50-54 3hrs 35min 4hrs 05min 55-59 3hrs 45min 4hrs 15min 60-64 4hrs 00min 4hrs 30min 65-69 4hrs 15min 4hrs 45min 70-74 4hrs 30min 5hrs 00min 75-79 4hrs 45min 5hrs 15min 80 and over 5hrs 00min 5hrs 30min *An additional 59 seconds will be accepted for each age group time standard. For example, a net time of 3:50:59 will be accepted for a 42-year-old woman.
For the 2013 Boston Marathon, qualifying times are more stringent, and must be run on or after September 24, 2011. Like the 2012 registration process, the acceptance of official race entrants will be based on qualifying time, with the fastest qualifiers (in relation to their age and gender) being accepted first until the race is full. All qualifying times are subject to review and verification.
2013 Qualifying Times (effective September 24, 2011) Age Group Men Women 18-34 3hrs 05min 00sec 3hrs 35min 00sec 35-39 3hrs 10min 00sec 3hrs 40min 00sec 40-44 3hrs 15min 00sec 3hrs 45min 00sec 45-49 3hrs 25min 00sec 3hrs 55min 00sec 50-54 3hrs 30min 00sec 4hrs 00min 00sec 55-59 3hrs 40min 00sec 4hrs 10min 00sec 60-64 3hrs 55min 00sec 4hrs 25min 00sec 65-69 4hrs 10min 00sec 4hrs 40min 00sec 70-74 4hrs 25min 00sec 4hrs 55min 00sec 75-79 4hrs 40min 00sec 5hrs 10min 00sec 80 and over 4hrs 55min 00sec 5hrs 25min 00sec *Unlike previous years, an additional 59 seconds will NOT be accepted for each age group time standard.
Entrants in the Push Rim Wheelchair Division, Mobility Impaired Division, and Visually Impaired Division are all subject to qualifying standards for their age and gender. These standards are unchanged from recent years.
The portion of this post that most interests me is the part that says, For the 2012 Boston Marathon, qualifying times must be run on or after September 25, 2010. To me that means that my time at the 2010 St. George Marathon, 3:30:53 is good to get me in the 2012 Boston Marathon and I will be able to sign up in the first round in the fastest old guy group cause I beat my qualifying time by about twenty-nine minutes........ |

The Ogden Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:52:00, Place in age division: 3
The highlight of the day was running the entire marathon with Ms. Marcie and taking 3rd place in my old man age division!!!!! Not much to say but the Ogden is always a difficult race that many runners under estimate. You can be as well prepared as possible but if you haven't studied the course it can turn on you like a bad dream! Especially the hill at 14 and when you leave the road for the running path! These two areas tend to cause runners to lose concentration and focus.

Nestle 5K (3.1 Miles) 00:23:16, Place in age division: 1
I really love attending this race. It's got to be the most friendly competitive 5K on the planet!
There all good, just some days are better than others. Just a short note about the Nestle 5K in Springville today. It was a beautiful morning to be alive and running. It was pretty much a normal day except I'm still recovering from the Ogden Marathon and struggling with a few lingering effects of that race. The race went off at 7:30 am Sharp! I didn't do any thing special at this one. At the starting line I elbowed my way right up front. I figure that if I start in front all the runners behind me have to pass me to beat me, especially all the old grampa men in my age group. I tried to start as fast as my short chubby little legs would get me down the road. My garmin says that my fastest time in my first mile was at a sub 5 minute mile. That didn't last very long. Then the second mile came into play with the little hill at the turn around. It can really be a bear or it's where the bear gives you a piano to carry for the rest of the race. I just tried to ignore the bear and push on thru it. When I saw the mile marker for the end of the second mile I surly felt good! I looked around and I didn't see anybody that looked like they were my age or older so I just tried to keep my pace from dropping into the basement.
This year I took along a small half pint bottle of water with me so that I didn't have to fight for a drink of water at the one water station on the course. Ya know, you really don't need a drink on such a short race except for at the very first and then at the end.
Anyway, I rounded the corner of the last down hill of the course and aimed it for the finish line. I seemed to pass a bunch of people and then when I got to the high school rubberized track I took a look behind me and felt fairly certain that none of the old men had creeped up on me. Wow, what a race!
Just after I got over the finish line the young whipper-snapper in front of me bent at the waist and blew chunks all over his shoes. I gave him a big pat on the back, helped him stand up straight and told him to suck it up and get back in line.
Mile 1. 7.2 m Mile 2. 8 m Mile 3. 7.2 m Last 375 ft. 29 s
23:16/7.3 pace 1st. Plc. 60-64 men
At the raffle I managed to catch a frisby and was completely skunked from any of the other prizes that they gave out. Oh well, maybe next year. This was my 11th year in a row running this race and I've placed in my AG 7 out of the 11 years. See ya next year here when I defend my old man AG 1st. place title.....
What can I say, I had a ball running this yearly classic. I got out and gave it the best shot I could...ugh!
PRIOR PREPRATION PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE
Hey, it was a great day for an old man, and I brought home the hardware just for fun!!!!! First place in the old 60 -64 man division.

UVM (26.2 Miles) 04:01:21, Place in age division: 9
UVM is UVM, is UVM. This race really has the potential to be a really great race in Utah and around the racing community in the future. This was my second UVM and probably the tougher of the two.
Dear Ms. Lisa picked up my bib and met me with it on Saturday morning prior to departing to the starting area. During the exchange period she introduced me to her two new running padawans Dina and April who were running their first marathons. I love first timers, it takes so little time to aim them in the right way to have a great first experience!!! As we were headed to the bus we chanced a meeting with the wonderfully delightful "Mel" and his running crew and rode up to the starting line after a gleeful send off from Ms. Teena and BeMo.
At the starting we did all of our pre race prep and I for one felt very good about the days race to come. I had previously stated that I wanted to run about a 4 hour, or just under a four hour race. This being my fourth marathon in the past 105 days I felt a bit apprehensive about getting it under way and keeping up with the goals that I had set for myself.
Anyway, we all got ourselves ready in our respective ways, made our final plans and said our good luck good byes and then it was off to the big blow up starting line that started to deflate just before the race was to start. There was this poor hunter in his big Dodge truck with his hunting dowgs and four wheelers that got caught at the starting line as the big blue arch deflated....he had to wait till the hoard of runners had taken flight before he could get out of the confusion. Poor guy, all he wanted to do was go have a peaceful day hunting with his dowgs!
OK, they re-inflated the arch and the race was off and running. The ambient temperature was perfect with no wind to speak of. What I would say were perfect racing conditions. I started my race with a plan and tried to stay with it to the end. But hence, somewhere out there about 15 miles the wheels started coming off the wagon and I slowed down and wasn't holding the pace I had set for myself. I think I was just tired and somewhat beat up from the past few marathons and it caught up with me out there on the "mean concrete" of the UVM.
Ya know what I find so neat out there running, this was my 38th marathon and I thrive on trying to be a helper and motivator and when it came for my turn in the hurt barrel all my good deeds and thoughts came back to me when my fellow friends and runners passed my slow ass but lent a helping hand and a quick motivating word of encouragement!!!!! It lifted my spirits and sent me to the finish line with revived focus and will to get the job done.....I finished with a third worst marathon time of 4:01:21......I'm not complaining about this time, I'm just sharing it.
The fun really started at the finish line, I got to see Ms. Lisa finish, she was totally in charge of her running destiny. She has now totally taken charge of her mental, physical and spiritual race components. She is the complete marathon runner! Now, watch her go get her BQ and fulfill the dream!
Now UVM is in the bag and I (we) have 44 days to get all the ding and dangs all healed up and get the program in order to run the Des News Mary on July 25, 2011. I will run this Mary smarter as my fifth Mary this season. My goal will be to get into the top 3 in my AG and finish under 4 hours!
Hey gang, I love you all and excuse me If I didn't mention you by name in this note, but It was a great day of running and fellowship at the UVM until I found out that the "Bag Monkeys" had broken my clothing bag and lost my car key and cell phone. How do they do this?

The Des News Mary (26.2 Miles) 04:26:22
Please excuse this poor race report, I'm tired! I got up at 1:30 this am and got my tired old man butt to the Ute stadium parking lot by 3:am and totally missed Lark cause I was in plain old street clothing.....ya, like he was supposed to recognize me out of my flag outfit?????? Oh well I caught up with him and Maynard up at the 7400 foot starting line elevation and had a pretty great conversation about what the hell we were doing there. The Race was and is still kind of a blurr to me. I remember that my right foot starting hurting at about mile three and it didnt let up till I got home and had a a good stiff shot or two or three of JD on the rocks. I remember running with Maynard off and on and this Canadian chick from the Marathon Maniacs till about mile 11 or twelve where I had to visit the Green Timple of Doom, don't need to expound on that! I was sure glad that the sun never got to come out till way after the race. The entire race was cloudy and over cast so we never got cooked out. I "think" it never got over 80 degrees during the race.
I continued to run on down the canyon, never catching the Maynardster or Ms. Sue, the Canadian, she sure was cute, glad she took the time to even talk to me....Oh, well, I slugged it out with my injured foot and managed about a 4:26:22, 5th place in my age division. Not a steller time but it will have to do for a great training run for some of my upcoming marathons. Glad I did it, now its time to get ready for the Provo 1/2 and the Park City full the second and third weekends of next month.....sorry about the crappy report...... |

Provo 1/2 Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:45:14, Place overall: 124, Place in age division: 1
by Tom Slick on Sat Aug 13, 2011 1:47 pm
It was just a really neat day at the Provo River Trail 1/2 Marathon. The race started right on time: 7:am. I can't believe it, Crazy Curt downsized the race and he made it one of his the best organized races. ( out of the 14 of his I've run)
I pulled into the parking lot of the Riverwoods Shopping complex at about 4:30 am and went over to the tables where Curt had out race bibs set out and ready to go. Shortly after that the busses started arriving, filling up and departing for the ride up the canyon.
Once up the canyon and to the usual starting area we departed the bus and walked out into some chilly but very pleasing tempratures, that was at about 5:30am. There were plenty of Temples of Doom with a very short wait.
We hung around, like there was somewhere else to go, getting in our last minute race preps in and then about 6:45 am the crowd started moving to the tiny two lane blacktop behind Curts truck. At 7:am sharp we could hear Curt yell out "Go" as he jumped in his truck and headed down the trail to set out the mile markers.
At mile three there was a water table off the side of the road with lots of cups of water for the runners but no attendants passing them out, I skipped this water station.
Well, I was into this run 3 miles and my foot was being well behaved. Little or no pain or discomfort. So I continued. I set my pace for around 8 minute miles and continued to cook 'em off one by one. My best mile was a 7.37 and my slowest was an 8.49 where you had to run up the hill to the hair pin turn and return to run under the highway. Overall pace, 8.07 per mile. I saw Marcie as she was coming down the hair pin hill as I was going up. My mile slpits: 1. 7.58 2. 8.03 3. 7.52 4. 7.37 5. 7.47 6. 7.37 7. 7.58 8. 8.48 9. 8.12 10. 8.05 11. 8.19 12. 8.25 13. 8.05 .1. 1.19 TOT. 1:45:14
I just settled into my run and focused on the finish line trying to not become distracted and slow my pace. I t was a really nice day at the best organized Provo 1/2 mary Curt has ever put on.
I finished with my favorite little cigar leading the way with a 1:45:14 and a first place in my old mans (60-64) age group. Not too bad for running on a foot with three stress fractures in it. I'll bet that if the foot was 100% I could have easily whacked a minute per mile off this pace. But, I stayed within my race plan and have saved the equipment for next weekends full Park City Marathon.........
At the end of the race Curt met me and gave me a laser engraved wooden key fob keepsake. There was plenty to drink, with watermellon and cantalope and a pancake breakfast .. It was a really great day!
Now its time to look towards the PCM, next Saturday! I have great confidence that I am following the right course of treatment to get my foot back to 100%.

Registration for the Boston Marathon
New Registration Process for Future Boston Marathons, Beginning with 2012 Boston Marathon
Beginning with the 2012 Boston Marathon, a more systematic and performance-based process will be employed for Boston Marathon registration.
For the 2012 Boston Marathon, registration will begin on Monday, September 12 at 10:00 (ET) and will close on Friday, September 23 (5:00 p.m.)
The qualifying times for the 2012 Boston Marathon won't change from recent years, but the new registration process will accommodate those who are the fastest qualifiers first.
Registration will occur on a “rolling admission” schedule, beginning with the fastest qualifiers. On the first day of registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon, those who are eligible for entry by having met the qualifying standards for their age and gender group by 20 minutes or more will be able to enter on September 12 at 10:00 a.m. (ET). On September 14 at 10:00 a.m., registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by 10 minutes or more. On September 16 at 10:00 a.m., registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by five minutes or more. During this first week of registration, applicants will be notified as they are accepted and their qualifying performance verified.
Once the registration window is closed, the fastest runners in relation to the qualifying standard to their age/gender will be entered into the race once their times are verified.
The field size for the 2012 Boston Marathon will not represent a significant increase from the most recent years.

carb load and total rest day...gotta be ready for the PCM on saturday morning.
The weather report is looking a bit frightful. Weather Channel says 56 degrees over friday night with a high of 80 degrees on Saturday.
If your running this one be careful to get and stay hydrated. The combination of a hot start, elevation and fast rising tempratures can make for a really tough day on the PCM!!!!
| | Last full day of carb loading and rest before the Saturday Park City Marathon. Get r done! | |
| Race: |
The Park City Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:36:14, Place in age division: 5
Whoops, I kinda let the punishing Park City Marathon course get the best of me this day. This wasn't my best day at a marathon but it wasn't my worst either! I'll have to revisit the PCM on another day to redeem myself from this less than acceptable personal performace.
This is one tough marathon and on any day its a super challenge for any and every runner no matter what your running status from novice to uber advanced world class runner you hale from!!!!!
I went into this run as well prepared as possible, although my physical condition as it relates to nagging injuries was not up to par. But none the less I was there to do the best I could on any given day.
The temp at the starting line was chilly in the thin mountain air and very pleasant to say the least. It was so refreshing to hear the Star Spangled Banner be played at the start of the race, but my question was, where was the flag flying at the starting line????
The race got off right on time in the cool and dark at 06:30 am and we were off. The beginning of this race is brutal....traveling generally uphill for the first 18 miles to the altitude level of 7225 ft. What a bear!!!! Most of the run is on black top but what isn't is on an old train rail trail and can be rather punishing to your feet with all the choppy terrain and rocks and general climb to the top of the course.
Then at or about the 18 mile mark after you make another wicked climb to the top of Empire Ave on a short block of straight up and down black top you start a down hill trending run to the finish line thru the ecology minded Park City area, very pleasing to the eye run.
On this fine day my race started falling apart about the half way point of this very punishing course. If your not 100% mentally, physically, and spiritually prepared, this course will chew you up and spit you out, leaving you on the side of the path for the buzzards to pick at.
All in all I had a pretty good day at the PCM with a 5th place finish in my age division with a disappointing 4:36:14 finish time......I look forward to the future to come in and do a better job next time!
A big thank you to all my running friends who helped me get to the finish line this fine day. And to mention a few, Teena, Sue, Smooth &Larry, RAD, Becca, Marcie, my neice Jeriann, and a whole cast of Fast runners, Forum Flyers and Marathon Maniacs! Thank you, Thank you. Thank you!!!!
This was my 40th marathon overall and my 6th marathon this year!

Another successful day on the two lane black top! Today at the TOU was a special day for me. This was my 4th time to run TOU and my 41st marathon overall. And if that wasn't enough, this was my 7th marathon in 8 months. Thats 5 BQ's out of 7 marathons run this year!
My goal for this race was to finish under 4 hours and save my tired, battered bod for the SGM in two weeks. Mission accomplished! My stress fractured feet and broken ribs seemed to have healed up enough that they didn't bother me...
I jumped into the 3:50:00 pace group that was being paced by Forum Flyer Canyon, by the way shes a great pacer! I stuck with her till about mile 15 where I began to get a bit weary.
I went 15 miles under 9 minutes and 11 miles over 9 minutes. Fastest 7.35 with a slowest at 9.41.
I am truly satisfied with this time and performance! Now its time to get recovered and ready to do a 3:30:00 at the St. George!!!!!!!
OK, thats keeping it short and sweet..........tyi!
|
| |
| | Wow, what a lazy day it was for me. I didn't do anything. I layed around all day licking my wounds and battle scars. TOU is a fun race but it sure was tough packing all that water weight down the course......oh well, now its time to get ready for SGM in two weeks!!! | |
| | I got out for a 2.5 mile post TOU shakedown recovery run. I'm quite pleased that I feel really great! Game On! I'm ready to go to SGM...... |

St George Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:00:01, Place overall: 2052, Place in age division: 33
Hello fellow runners of the St. George Marathon 2011. This was my 13th running of this marathon (SGM) on Saturday the 1st of October 2011.
I came into this marathon with high hopes and dreams. This marathon was my 8th marathon in virtually 8 months this year and one of my most favorite marathons to run in the world. After all it was my first full marathon way back in 1998. This year is also a personal challenge year for me. I have challenged myself to run 10 or more marathons from February 2011 till February 2012 and a bunch of other assorted races like 5Ks, 10Ks and half marys.
I got out of bed Friday morning at about 5:am, got the rest of my stuff packed into the car and I was outta Sandy headed to St. George to meet up with old running friends and new friends that needed to be met. MarcE and I are sharing a room in St. Geo.
I arrived in St. George about 10:am Friday and got into our room at the Suntime Motel where I was to meet up with Marc. As quickly as I arrived and set up in the room I exited the room and went straight to the SGM race expo. After all, this is where you go to meet up with all the runners new and old and buy stuff that you really don't need, especially for Saturdays race. I met up with Marc, from Texas, there along with Ronnie and his lovely bride Candy from Kentucky and many many more.
At the expo I met up with many many runners and friends from everywhere! From places all over the United States and from home and on the FRB, FF, MM. Just so many good friends and runners to meet and greet.
Then it was off to the SGM pasta dinner where we met up with many more runners and exchanged hopes and prayers for the upcoming marathon on the very next day.
It seems like Saturday morning at 3:am came along rather quickly. And as usual there didn't seem to be very much quality sleep to be gotten that night. Not much at all before it was time to get on the running gear and get out the door to the bright smileing faces of Ronnie and Candy coming to pick up Marc and I to head down too the bus.
We gathered at the first bus prior to 4:am to try to win some of the offered "bounty" for getting to the bus early to speed up the process of getting 5000 plus runners to the starting area. As usual I didn't win anything but a really neat space blanket to sit on while at the starting area! Where were the cotton gloves that were promised? I must have missed them! Of course you didn't need them anyway as it was a warm morning at the starting area.
The starting area was well organized with many many POPs and a double row of warming camp fires burning in soft red tones.
And as in years past we made our way to the third camp fire from the end on the inside closest to the road and set up shop to meet and greet all of our running friends who were nutty enough to make their way to The SGM and get ready for the tasks at hand. There were Forum Flyers and Fast Runner Bloggers and Marathon Maniacs all over the place getting ready to run the SGM.
I made my last minute adjustments, trips to the Green Temple of Doom, predictions and my way to the grab bag vans and the starting line area. Today was going to be a great day at the SGM. All I had to do was survive.
It seemed as thought the race started right on time with the wheel chairs heading into the darkness first never to be seen again.
I lined up with one of my "Boys", Dave, just ahead of the 3:25:00 pace group. We had no plans to run with them, we just wanted to get into the mix and get out on the road running. We talked about our running plans and how we would acheive them.
I, myself, had made plans and predictions of running any where from a 3:30:00 to a 3:45:00 marathon that day, knowing full well that if I could just pull off a sub 4 hr marathon I would be happy.
The race was under way and I immidately felt tired and out of sorts. I think it was just the fact that I didn't feel like the two weeks before the SGM was enough time to fully recover from running the TOU just two weekends before. Oh well, there was a job to get done and nobody else could do it for you......so just go and "Getter' done".
The first five miles were rough, nothing on my body wanted to work together. At about mile 3 "Dave" had some upset stomach issues and had to leave the race for a few moments and me to fend for myself. Somewhere out of the dark, Huans32, MarkO, appeared and ran with me off and on for many miles. Thank you MarkO, I meeded that.
I continued on thinking that today was going to be a disaster and had thought of catching a ride down to the finish area with the Sick, Lame and Lazy Sag Wagon and putting myself out of my misery.
In those first few miles before the hill at Veyo I manage to keep some steady miles paced at @ 8:25s, then the Veyo.
Veyo extended my pace out a little bit but that was to be expected and I knew that I was going to be rather tired when I got to the top. At the top I started to strugle and have many self doubts about even being able to finish this race and then a strange and wonderful thing began to happen to me, time and time again as I ploded down the road.
As my many many friends passed me along the way my spirit was renewed and and my hopes and dreams were refreshed and I finally got my act together and got it down the road, with all this great motivation from my friends.
One piece of motivation came from the great "Gumpchump", Teena! We have a special slapping thing we do as we pass one another. Of course, it seems to be her doing all the passing and slapping on me these days!!!! Oh well, it works for me!!!!
The miles between 9 and 20 were pretty rough this year! My pace lengthened out to the mid 9s. I just wanted to get it over with. The weather on the course was just a bit warm, but nothing that hasn't been overcome before. It seemed like I was getting dry mouth between water stations more frequently during this run. I continued to double up on my hydration at each water station and that seemed to work. I just kept telling myself to just keep putting one foot in front of the other and get it down the road.
Oh well, then it was the last 10k of the SGM and I felt like I wanted to get this ordeal over with. I started to kick my pace up as best I could. Hey I even got back under the 9s for a few miles. I really got a boost when I could see St George between the valley walls out there at @ 20 something miles. I knew the finish line was getting close.
And then it was finally time to finish the SGM 2011 and was I certainly over joyed. As I was running into the bright hunter orange chutes with my cigar leading the way, all I could see was the clock and it was yelling at me to go a little faster. I just didn't have another gear to shift into and finished with a 4:00:01. Not quite a sub 4 but very respectfully close.
Well that's it. 8 marathons in 8 months, 13 SGMs, 42 marathons overall. I think I was something like 33rd in my old man age division at SGM. In the Grand Slam competition I took first place my age group and a very nice trophy home.
Oh yea, I went to the SGM Ten Year Club dinner with Marcie and Mindy and at the very end of the evening, the last number to be drawn was mine. Can you believe it, I was selected and won a 5 nights all inclusive gift certificate to the Green Valley Spa in St. George Utah.
Don't you just love the St. George Marathon!!!! I do!!!! See ya all out on the road, Take care and train smart......

The Hoover Dam Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:14:34, Place overall: 30, Place in age division: 2
Wow, this Hoover Dam Marathon was really a different experience for me. On Friday the 28th I left home in Sandy rather early and headed out to Boulder City Nevada to run the Hoover Dam Marathon. This marathon is my 43rd overall and my 9th marathon in the last 9 months with 2 more to go. (From Feb. 27, 2011 - To Feb. 5, 2012)
I got into Boulder City around 11:am Friday morning and went to check in to the marathons host hotel, but to my surprise they werent ready for me. They told me to come back around 1:pm and my room would be ready.
This gave me some time to drive out to the Lake Mead Boulder Beach Special Events Beach area and check out part of the race course.
Just as advertised the race starts out on a steady gradual incline for the first 1/4 mile and then runs along a paved path till about the third mile where you meet up with a hard dirt packed and gravel railroad tunnel trail and all of this is with in view of the beautiful blue waters of Lake Mead.
The next morning I got up at 5:am got myself ready and returned to the Lake Mead Special Event Beach where the other runners had started to gather. It was pitch black out there. You couldn't see you hand in front of your face. There were about 500 people there to do the three designated races, The Full Marathon, the 1/2 Marathon and the 10K.
As we met by the BBQ area there were lanterns set up in the area so you could find the PoP's, all four of them, and continue to prepare yourself for the race at hand.
It was hard to believe but this was the first marathon that I had attended that I didn't know somebody, either someone running it or even a spectator or family member. Oh well, I just went out and made some new friends and cured that situation.
So just as the sun was coming up and the area became lighted up the race director started hurding us all towards the starting mats in the roadway adjacint to the BBQ area. She had a bull horn and explained that the 10K'ers would start about 2 minutes before the marathoners, on a different course of travel, and the 1/2 marathoners would start at 8:am on the same trail but for only one loop of the course, where as the marathoners would make two loops of the course. The temprature was in the mid 50's at the start and near 80 at the finish.
The 10K race started promptly at 7:am and then just two short minutes later the Race Director started the marathon. I quickly learned that the first 1/4 of a mile was indeed a gentle incline that seemed to be more like 2.5 miles of gentle incline and I knew that this was not going to be an easy day of running. At least it was on a paved pathway that resembled the Porter Rockwell Trail in Draper. It was wide and very smooth with a lot of turns in it until about three miles out where the black top paved trail turned into a hard packed dirt and gravel rail trail (similar to the rail trails at the Park City Marathon) that was used in the 1930's to supply the construction workers of the Boulder Dam. This portion of the trail then travels thru massive tunnels that are carved thru the mountains which take you through six switchbacks as you decend down to the upper level of the parking structure where you have a killer sweet view of the Hoover Dam and the Bypass Bridge.
Now that I had made my way through 1/4 of the purposed course I knew that todays run was going to be a tough one. Running on the packed dirt and gravel trails was rough and you had to run 14 miles of it in the Marathon, the rest of the way on the paved asphalt trail. This is no piece of cake easy marathon. Matter of fact, I think it is one of the hardest marathon courses I've ever had the pleasure to engage.
At this point in the race you turn around and head back to the starting area only to retrace your steps back along the same trail as the marathoners make this journey in two loops to finish back at Boulder Beach.
It was an amazing thing to see the leaders of the marathon pass by you as they doubled back to re run the course in the two loop configuration. It was also just as fun to see the runners who were behind you as it was to see the front runners. And some where during the first return to the finish area you run past the 1/2 marthoners as they make their first leg of the first and only loop.
The Hoover Dam Marathon is really a beautiful high desert trail marathon with some of the most picturesque vistas and it's brutal and tough on the under prepared and faint of heart. The aid and hydration stations were well stocked and right where they said they would be.
I finished the race in 4:14:34. That was good enough to be 30th place overall in the Marathon and 2nd place in my Age Division. There were 97 total runners in the marathon and 7 runners in my Age Division.
An amazing marathon!!!!

The Marathon was simply greatto watch even if it was from a setting position and not at least from the back of the pack!!!!!Oh well my 12 miles is the furthest I've been since last saturday. It gave me great confidence that I will be ready to run the Dallas White Rock marathon in about 27 days....... |

4 mile easy run...recovery from Hoover Dam Mary coming along just fine.
This news just in; I've decided to add one more marathon to my Birthday Year Challenge. The Lost Dutchman Marathon in Apache Junction Arizona. |
| |
| | got out this morning between the rain and snow storm and got in a great 6.5 miler |
| |
| | My schedule called for a 14 miler today but I felt like I need to do a shorter more difficult training run. So I lowered my mileage to 10 and ran my most difficult hill training course. Bingo-Bango-Boingo, it was a perfect success for this tired old mans ego. Just two weeks after my last marathon and I completed my most challenging course.....I will be ready for the Dallas White Rock Marathon three weeks!!!!!! |
| |
| | Today will be a much earned rest day, the 10 miler was tough yesterday but so worth it to continue my recovery.I can say that this is the best I've felt since the Hoover Dam Marathon two saturdays ago. Seems as though my recovery is coming along very well and with three weeks before the Dallas White Rock Marathon I should be in really good shape for the race. I might even be good enough to compete in my age group. TYI and knock on wood!!! | |
| | Got out to Sugarhouse park this am and got in a 4 mile hill run around the park. Easy on the flats and attacked the hills. Ya, life is coming back to my tired old man legs!!!! |
|
| |
Today at the Liberty Park I participated in some good old fashioned speed training! I just tried to run fast whenever I felt like it just to see how my recovery is coming along. And to my surprise, I'm doing very well. 4 miles @ 7:33 pace.
18 days till the Dallas White Rock Marathon....Yahooooo!
81 days till the Surf City USA Marathon........
95 days till The Lost Dutchman Marathon........
152 days till the Boston Marathon............. and I don't know how many days till the Ing. NYC Marathon????????? |

In keeping with my perpetual taper this year, I ran a easy 5 miler this am in 47 degree clear weather. I will run a 3 miler on Tuesday, a 2 miler on Wednesday and then go into a rest period while I carb load Thursday thru Saturday. Then of course, the Dallas White Rock Marathon is Sunday, Dec 4th, 2011. Be there or be square :) :) :) :)
|
| |
| | 3 miles this am. "Plan your Race, Race your Plan"! |
| |
| | I've decicded to forgo my 2 mile shakedown run today and take an extra day of rest from running during my carb load........The Dallas Marathon is Sunday.......... | |
| |
Holy Moley, that was the hardest thing I've ever done. I blew off my 2 miler yesterday and sat back and cooled off my feet by gathering up enough leaves to fill up the bed of my 3/4 ton pick-up. Ya, now thats what I call a rest! Hey, BAM hows that for a rest?????
Ok I've got the carb load routine down pat. Spent the afternoon preparing my pasta meals for the next three days........now all I have to do is eat this pasta load mixture for the next 72 plus hours. You do know how boring this can become.....oh well, thats life in the fast lane! I'll be outta here Friday to fly to Dallas where MarcE will pick me up........He's gunna run the half when I'm running the full at the White Rock. TYI.....
| | rest and carb.....travel day to the Dallas PCS Metro White Rock Marathon. | |

| Race: |
The Dallas White Rock Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:17:20, Place overall: 1785, Place in age division: 18
The Dallas White Rock Marathon:
Let me start with the stats. There were about 6000 marathoners mixed together with about 13000 1/2 marathoners and marathon relay runners at the starting line. I was bib #3135 and started in corral B1. I don't know what all that means but dispite the cold and rain the marathon was a very well organized event.
My journey to the Dallas White Rock Marathon started for me with a flight into Dallas to be picked up by MarcE and getting to spend some time with Marc and his wonder family on Friday and Saturday morning. Saturday after noon Marc and I moved to the Omni Hotel in Dallas and promptly zipped over to the White Rock Expo. All the while it was raining cats and dogs in some chilly weather outside. It rained all day and all night Saturday! It reminded me of the rains of the Noreaster at the Boston Marathon a couple of years before.
The expo was pretty good as far as expos go with lots of vendors selling running products and hacking one marathon or another. But pretty good none the less but not even as large as the St George Marathon Expo.
I did get to touch the good luck symbol of the White Rock Marathon which is a "Big White Rock" that was collected from the area where the White Rock marathon is run around White Rock Lake. Pretty neat tradition where the running club touched the rock before every run.
The race started pretty close to right on time, 8:00 am, even though it was raining and it was about 40 degrees. The race organizers handed out TCU purple ponchos and gloves to all runners at the start of the race.....that was pretty nice of these folks...
As the race started it began to rain harder which made most runners put on the poncho and start shuffeling down the road. The rain picked up (again and again) and then the winds started up as you got into the open and started running.
I started my race with the poncho on and found it uncomfortable running with it on, I was either going to get soaked to the bone in the rain or get soaked to the bone in sweat from being trapped inside the poncho. Several times in the beginning of the race I took the poncho on and off until I decided that I'd rather run without it. After a while your body heat would counter act the wet soggy running clothing and keep you fairly warm. It just burns up so much extra energy trying to keep warm.
My race plan this day was to run about a 4 hour marathon. But just after it starting I could that see that the weather was just not going to cooperate with me in making this plan happen. It just sucks to run in soggy shoes and soaked clothing. So I just settled into a very comfortable pace and worked my way to the finish line keeping in mind that I have a couple more marathons to complete after the White Rock and had a great time running in the rain. For the longest time I had the pleasure or running along side or slightly in front of "Spider Man". This guy was dressed from head to toe in a spiderman costume and he was a kids delight on the course. He wore the whole costume, including the head mask, the entire race.
On a day with better weather this coures would be a very fine run and it appears that it could be very fast. It's got a lot of lumpy, bumpy neighborhood running through flowing street gutters with a big section running on a blacktop lane around White Rock Lake which is very gorgeous.
So around mile 21 your leaving the White Rock Lake area and you go up the last of two (one at mile 12 which was so slight I didn't even notice it) hills known as the Dolly Parton Hills. At the mile 21 DP Hill there were a few Dolly Parton impersonators wiggling and giggling for the runners amusement! Pretty funny to see these men dressed up with the attrabutes of Ms. Partons and be sporting full beards and really deep voices? :) :).
So from there the race goes back into the "Burbs" and on into the downtown area of Dallas and back to the Fairpark where it started. It sure was neat to see to finish line, I was wet and cold and really wanted some relief. Marc ran the 1/2 marathon this day and told me at the beginning that he would meet up with me at the end of the race to get some photos and such.
At the finish all runners were directed back into two large fair exhibit halls that were warm and dry. There was plenty of recovery food and drink for all as you collected your race shirt. Pretty neat, you get two shirts at all these Texas marathons...one when you pick up your bib packet and the second, which was a very nice tech shirt, after your race has concluded.
I finished with a 4:17:20. Not my best, not my worst, just a good solid finish for my 10th marathon in the last 10 months........Now I've got 63 days to get my tired old man butt recovered and trained up for my last two marathons in my 12 in 12 - 60th Birthday challenge. Surf City USA Marathon in Huntington Beach California on February 5, 2012 and The Lost Dutchman Marathon at Apache Junction Arizona on February 19, 2012. One last fact for me, I've run 10 marathons this year, so far, and will have participated in 6 different states running them! Yahoo!!!
Pretty neat race, I'd consider doing it again especially if it wasn't raining.
Take care and Be careful out there!

| |
| | "Back on the road again"....got in a nice run at the Sugar House Park this am. Feeling good after the Dallas......60 something days till Surf City USA.... |
| |
| | Total rest day....getting ready for the Surf City USA Marathon and beyond!!! |
| |
took an unscheduled rest day today in prepration for a 12 miler tomorrow!
| | Oops, I only went 8 miles today. Sure was nice out except the gunk in the air. Hope we get a storm in here soon to clean the air here in the valley. |
|
| | Yahoooo...regular rest day!!!! Back after it tomorrow morning!!! | |
| | just putting in the recovery training miles |
|
| |
Another wonderful day on the road! Went out in sub 32 degrees weather that was foggy and smoggy where I didn't see the sunshine! Just another Mountain (hill) training run to get me ready for Boston and my next two marathons.
This mountain training run was a 10.5 miler up Dimple Dell Road and down Wasatch Blvd. The run starts at 4799 foot in elevation and climbs 431 vertical feet to 5230 feet at 5.5 miles out. Then it drops 431 vertical feet in 5 miles on my return to the start. The incline, like the decline is at an average of 6% grade toping out at as much as 12% grade for periods going both ways..
PPPPPP!!!!!!!.
|
| |
| |
normal training schedule rest day! |
| |
Todays scheduled training was a 4 mile recovery run. 28 degrees, no wind, so sunshine, plenty of fog and smog.
46 days till the Surf City USA Marathon, Yahooooooooo... |
| |
| | Another wonderful day on the two lane black top! No wind, a little snow,25 degrees, some cold air and a little bit not so cold air....but the air was a bit cleaner since it snowed a bit! got 6 miles in at about an 8.25 min.per mile average. Oh well, this ones in the can and it 45 days till Surf City!!!! |
| |
| |
Nice day to run: 32 degrees, clear blue sky, sunshine, about 1/2 inch of snow on the ground that was melting fast. 4 mile modified tempo run.....very successful! tyi......
As my training schedule progresses towards Surf City, The Lost Dutchman and Boston, I find that I will need to adjust and take Friday off and run a 16 miler saturday. I would prefer to run the long on Sunday because my next two marathons are on sundays. Of course this is just probably a way for me to rationalize taking a day off and not running on Christmas Day, now just how weak is that!!!
Hey, Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you and yours !!!!!
|
| |
| |
Rest day.
43 days till Surf City USA
| | What a cold beautiful day for a mid length run. The sun was up in a cloudless sky and the temps were down below freezing.......Oh well, I gotter done and it felt really good. I have much faith that I will be ready for the Surf City USA Mary in 42 days, and the Lost Dutchnan in 56....... |
| |
| | I took a break from running and good nutrition on Christmas. I think I would have done better if I'd kept with my regular plan rather than monkey with it like I did. Hope you all had a wonderful christmas and are looking forward to a Happy New Year! |
| | Just a total rest day....no training what so ever! |
| |
Wow that was quite the break....next time I will maintain my regular running schedule.
Back to the two lane black top....4 easy miles today. Now it's but 39 days till showtime at the Surf City USA marathon. So neat that I've had enough time between my last marathon and my next that I'm actually getting in some "real" training............ |
| |
| |
Finally got out the door for a 6 miler in rather comfortable weather conditions! It was about 47 degrees under partly cloudy skies. No wind, rain or snow to contend with. This was more like a Tempo run where my over all average was at about 10 minute miles with my faster miles at 7.34 min miles......Oh well, the training and recovery is coming together well and I will be ready to do the Surf City Marathon in 37 days........wahooooo!
|
| |
| |
It was probably 49 degrees this fine day in Sandy Utah. It rained last night so the cool two lane black top was dust free under cloudy skies. Again, no wind, it didn't rain or snow on me and it made for another great Tempo/recovery run with just 37 days before The Surf City USA Marathon..........Overall average: 10.1 min. miles, fastest: 6.19 min. mile. Life is feelin' and lookin' good!!! |
|

Went out for a 3.5 easy shakedown cruse for the "Beat the New Years Clock 5k". It's New Years Eve at Sugarhouse Park. Usually starts at 11:30p... Can you believe it, it got up to 61 degrees today. Man it was fun running in a tank and shorts without freezing!
36 days till SC-USA-Marathon |

Beat The New Year 5K (3.1 Miles) 00:21:30
Hey everybody.....I just wanted to get on the blog and wish everybody a very Happy New Year! As for me, tonight, I'm going to the Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City and doing my favorite new years eve activity....."Run" the Beat the New Years Clock 5K with friends and family! If theres anything blog worthy I will chime in tomorrow with a race report.
I went to this 5k, as usual ,with a very open mind knowing that it's a first of the year tune up fun run. (actually the last of the year)This race is special to me because my "Boys" and "Girls" attend it with me. This years race was rather special because I was able to intoduce another boy into the sport of organized road running! It was the first 5k or run of any kind except for training.
My race strategy was to get out fast and try to continue to gain speed throught the race....The course is a rather hilly thing and they can wind you early in the race. It was about 25 degrees with little or no wind and dry as a bone. It did help that I've trained at the park on this course probably twice a week for the past 5 months and It didn't help because I've already run 10 marathons and several other races this past year coming into this run. I'm a tired, short, fat old man.
Anyway I had a ball out running on New Years Eve, I beat the clock for my 7th time. I got my race shirt and my finisher trophy!!!!! I finished with my best time in 7years with a 21:30. Already can't wait to do it this coming New Years Eve 2012!
