got up at 3:am and got in a 6 mile hill trainer......it was a nice trainer but the ambient air was quite warm.....what happened to the low 60's??? The Provo 1/2 mary is saturday!

It was just a really neat day at the Provo River Trail 1/2 Marathon. The race started right on time: 7:am. I can't believe it, Crazy Curt downsized the race and he made it one of his the best organized races. ( out of the 14 of his I've run)

I pulled into the parking lot of the Riverwoods Shopping complex at about 4:30 am and went over to the tables where Curt had out race bibs set out and ready to go. Shortly after that the busses started arriving, filling up and departing for the ride up the canyon.

Once up the canyon and to the usual starting area we departed the bus and walked out into some chilly but very pleasing tempratures, that was at about 5:30am. There were plenty of Temples of Doom with a very short wait.

We hung around, like there was somewhere else to go, getting in our last minute race preps in and then about 6:45 am the crowd started moving to the tiny two lane blacktop behind Curts truck. At 7:am sharp we could hear Curt yell out "Go" as he jumped in his truck and headed down the trail to set out the mile markers.

At mile three there was a water table off the side of the road with lots of cups of water for the runners but no attendants passing them out, I skipped this water station.

Well, I was into this run 3 miles and my foot was being well behaved. Little or no pain or discomfort. So I continued. I set my pace for around 8 minute miles and continued to cook 'em off one by one. My best mile was a 7.37 and my slowest was an 8.49 where you had to run up the hill to the hair pin turn and return to run under the highway. Overall pace, 8.07 per mile. I saw Marcie as she was coming down the hair pin hill as I was going up.

I just settled into my run and focused on the finish line trying to not become distracted and slow my pace. I t was a really nice day at the best organized Provo 1/2 mary Curt has ever put on.

I finished with my favorite little cigar leading the way with a 1:45:14 and a first place in my old mans (60-64) age group. Not too bad for running on a foot with three stress fractures in it. I'll bet that if the foot was 100% I could have easily whacked a minute per mile off this pace. But, I stayed within my race plan and have saved the equipment for next weekends full Park City Marathon.........

At the end of the race Curt met me and gave me a laser engraved wooden key fob keepsake. There was plenty to drink, with watermellon and cantalope and a pancake breakfast .. It was a really great day!

Now its time to look towards the PCM, next Saturday! I have great confidence that I am following the right course of treatment to get my foot back to 100%.

Registration for the Boston Marathon

New Registration Process for Future Boston Marathons, Beginning with 2012 Boston Marathon

Beginning with the 2012 Boston Marathon, a more systematic and performance-based process will be employed for Boston Marathon registration.

For the 2012 Boston Marathon, registration will begin on Monday, September 12 at 10:00 (ET) and will close on Friday, September 23 (5:00 p.m.)

The qualifying times for the 2012 Boston Marathon won't change from recent years, but the new registration process will accommodate those who are the fastest qualifiers first.

Registration will occur on a “rolling admission” schedule, beginning with the fastest qualifiers. On the first day of registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon, those who are eligible for entry by having met the qualifying standards for their age and gender group by 20 minutes or more will be able to enter on September 12 at 10:00 a.m. (ET).  On September 14 at 10:00 a.m., registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by 10 minutes or more.  On September 16 at 10:00 a.m., registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by five minutes or more. During this first week of registration, applicants will be notified as they are accepted and their qualifying performance verified.  

Once the registration window is closed, the fastest runners in relation to the qualifying standard to their age/gender will be entered into the race once their times are verified.

The field size for the 2012 Boston Marathon will not represent a significant increase from the most recent years.

Registration Process for the 2012 Boston Marathon

Date registration opens for runners with times...
First Week
September 12, 2011 - 10:00 a.m. (ET) 20 min., 00sec. or faster than their qualifying time (based on age/gender) 
September 14, 2011 - 10:00 a.m. (ET) 10 min., 00 sec. or faster than their qualifying time (based on age/gender)
September 16, 2011 - 10:00 a.m. (ET) 5 min., 00 sec. or faster than  their qualifying time (based on age/gender)
Second Week
September 19, 2011 - 10:00 a.m. (ET) All Qualified Runners
September 23, 2011 - 5:00 p.m. (ET) Registration closes for qualified applicants

 

If the field size is not reached after the first week and additional space remains, then registration will open to all qualifiers at the beginning of Week Two (September 19) and those who have met the qualifying standards by any amount of time will be able to apply for entry. The application process will remain open for the entire week, closing on Friday, September 23. At the conclusion of Week Two, those who are the fastest among the pool of applicants in their age and gender will be accepted.  Accepted athletes will be notified on September 28.

If space remains available after this two week process, registration will remain open to any qualifier on a first come, first served basis until the maximum field size is reached.

For the 2013 Boston Marathon, qualifying times are more stringent, and must be run on or after September 24, 2011. Like the 2012 registration process, the acceptance of official race entrants will be based on qualifying times, with the fastest qualifiers (in relation to the qualifying time for their age and gender) being accepted first until the race is full. All qualifying times are subject to review and verification.

The weather report is looking a bit frightful. Weather Channel says 56 degrees over friday night with a high of 80 degrees on Saturday.

If your running this one be careful to get and stay hydrated. The combination of a hot start, elevation and fast rising tempratures can make for a really tough day on the PCM!!!!

Whoops, I kinda let the punishing Park City Marathon course get the best of me this day. This wasn't my best day at a marathon but it wasn't my worst either! I'll have to revisit the PCM on another day to redeem myself from this less than acceptable personal performace.

This is one tough marathon and on any day its a super challenge for any and every runner no matter what your running status from novice to uber advanced world class runner you hale from!!!!!

I went into this run as well prepared as possible, although my physical condition as it relates to nagging injuries was not up to par. But none the less I was there to do the best I could on any given day.

The temp at the starting line was chilly in the thin mountain air and very pleasant to say the least. It was so refreshing to hear the Star Spangled Banner be played at the start of the race, but my question was, where was the flag flying at the starting line????

The race got off right on time in the cool and dark at 06:30 am and we were off. The beginning of this race is brutal....traveling generally uphill for the first 18 miles to the altitude level of 7225 ft. What a bear!!!! Most of the run is on black top but what isn't is on an old train rail trail and can be rather punishing to your feet with all the choppy terrain and rocks and general climb to the top of the course.

Then at or about the 18 mile mark after you make another wicked climb to the top of Empire Ave on a short block of straight up and down black top  you start a down hill trending run to the finish line thru the ecology minded Park City area, very pleasing to the eye run.

On this fine day my race started falling apart about the half way point of this very punishing course. If your not 100% mentally, physically, and spiritually prepared, this course will chew you up and spit you out, leaving you on the side of the path for the buzzards to pick at.

All in all I had a pretty good day at the PCM with a 5th place finish in my age division with a disappointing 4:36:14 finish time......I look forward to the future to come in and do a better job next time!

A big thank you to all my running friends who helped me get to the finish line this fine day. And to mention a few, Teena, Sue, Smooth &Larry, RAD, Becca, Marcie, my neice Jeriann, and a whole cast of Fast runners, Forum Flyers and Marathon Maniacs! Thank you, Thank you. Thank you!!!!

Great, great recovery day.......I've got my running stuff all ready to pick up my plan on Tuesday morning and get my act down the road to TOU and SGM.........tyi...

This news just in: it appears that I am still in first place in the competition in the Grand Slam 2011, in my Age Division, of course!!!!!!!
