| Race: |
The Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:51:12, Place overall: 24488, Place in age division: 813 | | The Boston....the report will follow, soon.
April 20, 2015, The Boston Marathon
I've been to 11 previous Boston Marathons since 2000 and I never know what to expect when it comes to the weather except that I know there will be some.
I went this year expecting to BQ for 2016 but all my best plans did not come to fruitition. I felt like I was finally over an injury that I encurred in November of 2014 but it was not to be so.
Race day morning I got up around 6 am and did all the things you do to get ready for the race and got out the door to jump on the "T" and make my way to the Commons where you load the bus. As I got to the commons the volunteers were hard at it getting runners mated up with busses and on down the road to Hopkinton. They were really being efficient.
I loaded up and quickly found a seat next to a young guy from Canada who told me that Boston was his second marathon ever! The first question out of his mouth was, do you have any suggestion on how to run Boston? I wanted to tell him that because of the rain and 20 mph winds it would probably be better to just go back to his room and watch the race on TV. But I didn't, I just gave him my best game plan to run a smart race at Boston considering the weather conditions.
After a short stay in the Athlets Village and meeting bunches of new people from all over the world the announcer called out my wave (3) and corral (7) to report to start stagging area. It was about 41 degrees, raining and the wind was whipping around. I finally got to my corral where I got in some last minute stretching and went over my running plan silently in my head.
I wanted to start the race a bit slow and hold it out to about 5 miles or so. So then I was off to the races with about 7 thousand of my closest friends from old corral #7 and the rest of wave 3 and 6 other corrals. The start was pretty normal and I was feeling pretty good about the whole situation.
The rain had really started in earnest and the winds were in my face with gusts up around 20 mph. I settled into about an 8:30 minute per mile pace which was quite comfortable. This was all going well.
I did managet to see my "peeps" at the biker bar on the left side of the road where I took a small cup of beer..... As I continued down the road my left leg started to bother me slightly with Quad and Hammie pain. I continued to run down thhe road hoping it would just be a phantom pain and go away....much to my shugrin it didn't go away and continued to increase in pain. I decided at about mile 6 that I would not be able to met my pace requirements and do a BQ at Boston this year. I in turn told myself that today was going to be a fun run and I would get myself down the road having as much fun as I could getting my self to the finish line. And so I did.
I took time to talk to other runners, encourage others do their best and reach out to the crowds for vocal support myself and others. I think I heard my "monicker", TOM SLICK, called out with best wishes about 10,000 times during the race. Dam that was nice.
Well I didn't set any new records except to mark my PW for a Boston Marathon and overall slowest marathon....But I finished and got the medal and t-shirt.
I started with bib #22051 and ended up 24488 overall at the finish. That gave me an 11:oX minute per mile pace and a lot of time to enjoy the wind and rain and about 26000 felow Boston Marathon runners. I finished with a 4:51:12.
It was a fine day and I can't wait to get back there in 2016.
tyi....

| | Very easy recovery jog....very easy!
|
| |
| | 2.62 mile recovery run, with time in the weight room. It was a bear but I can see how I will improve...I'm going to sign up for the Big Cottonwood Canyon Marathon in September....to get my 2016 BQ!
|
| |
| | 4.5 mi at 3:30am w/Missie......Missie just started her taper this morning, for the Ogden Marathon on May 16, 2015. I'm just recovering from Boston (-:
i THINK i'M GOING TO SIGN UP FOR THE bIG cOTTONWOOD mARATHON IN sEPTEMBER TO GET MY bq FOR 2016...................if I do that I can just have a fun run in Athens in November. And besides that, if you BQ at Big Cottonwood you are in a Window that qualifies you for two Bostons rather than one.......like 2016 &2017.
|
| |
| | Rest Day Monday with a weight lifting W/O in the evening.
Well, I'm two weeks out of my worst, 12th Boston Marathon and my recovery seems to be on track and working well. "Knock on wood"! Life seems to be coming back from my disasterous last couple of years dealing with injuries. I do hope that I can keep the focus and be a better, stronger, faster, runner in the near and distant future...
I signed up for the Big Cottonwood Marathon that runs on September 12, 2015 and I sat down this weekend and made a training/cross training schedule to get me to "GO BIG" (Big Cottonwood).
My plan is to get well trained/cross trained, injury free and make "GO BIG" a BQ marathon for the 2016 Boston Marathon and a great warm up for a really fun competive age division run for me at the Athens Greece Authenic Marathon in November. I've gone back and deleted some races on my 2015 schedule and added others and hope to bring my 2015 running season home on a positive and successful conclusion. That's the plan for this old man!
| |
| | 3 am recovery miles without Missie.....
Missie went and broke her clavical (collar bone) this past Sunday in a freak trail bike (Honda 90) accident. So she is out of the Ogden Marathon.I can't believe this happened just 13 days from race day, after all her great training. Go figure. I think she wants to regroup and do the Big Cottonwood with me in September after her broken bone heals correctly.
|
| |
| | No am run this morning. Will do a W/O after work today. Recovery is coming along famously...
| |
| | didn't do anything.....except to work on my rehab back into running. My plan seems to be working....
| |
| | PT & W/O.........getting ready to check out my left leg injury recovery on Sunday!
| |
| | sorry I'm late posting this but it was a busy weekend. I went out for a 3 mile shakedown run Sunday after a long stretch. The easy run came of much better than expected, now I'm pretty exctied to get my training for the Big Cottonwood Marathon underway. I will continue my rehab training for another week to make sure I don't re-injure my left leg or any of the other multitude of maladies of the old.....Yo!
|
|
| | 5 easy miles around the hood...
|
| |
| | went out for a progress check 4 miler this am. I'm quite happy to report that I have made great progress in putting this leg injury behind me. This is the first run in about two months that I haven't returned home in pain...."knock on wood" & keep up the good work!
|
| |
| | three easy miles - 16 weeks till The Big Cottonwood Marathon

| Race: |
Nestle 5k (3.107 Miles) 00:28:24, Place overall: 190, Place in age division: 5 | | This was my 15th year doing the Nestle 5k. I just love this small town family oriented run around the block. This years attendance hit 1983 runners, pretty good for a really small town.....I was still a bit off my game this year because of a nagging injury. Oh well, it was a really fun day of running and meeting up with lots of friends........now it's on to the Big Cottonwood Marathon.
|
| |
| | just a 5 mile recovery run from the 5k on Saturday.....

Big Cottonwood Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:25:55, Place in age division: 14 | | Wow, what a day at the Big Cottonwood Marathon! Wow, what a year it's been getting here. I'm sad to report that I didn't get a BQ for the 2016 Boston Marathon, but I have over come some daunting hurdles in my life in he recent past that will set me up for a return to Boston in the future.
The Big Cottonwood is a very well run marathon, the directors have done a very good job of putting together a very well organized and super challenging marathon. I can see this marathon continuing to growing in popularity as time goes on. It is a fast race but that speed comes with a double edged sword. All that down hill running comes with a price when you hit the mouth of the canyon and change to a flat running style somewhat like several other Utah marathons.
I got to the runner bus loading zone at 4:am and got on the third of twenty-eight busses going to the top of the mountain. The top of this mountain is at the 10,000 foot altitude where the amount of oxygen is 50% less than at sea level, breath taking all by itself.
It was about 43 degrees there with very clear skies, no wind and no heated tents to hang out in. We all, (1400) hung out in our mylar sheets looking like a bunch of tin foil clad baked potatoes waiting for a fork to be thrust into us. It is of note to mention that there were lots of Porta-potties available especially for the early arrivers to the top of the mountain.
The communications between the organizers and the runners was very well done as they kept us very well informed as to the start of the race which started promptly at 6:45am.
As for my race experience, as I reflect upon it, I didn't follow my perceived race plan as closely as I wanted. As I started I found myself running at a pace unwisly faster than expected. The first three miles are on a small mountain road that is very steep which entices one to a much faster leg turnover on reduced oxygen intake. Only to be huffing and puffing like a coal fired freight train before I hit the beginning of mile four. I managed to take a little control of my pace but by the time I got to the mouth of the canyon at 17 miles and the six mile hair pin out and back turn around I found myself in trouble. I had expended way too much energy on the 6% average down hill running portion of the race that hurt when your suddenly on a somewhat flat running surface with the heat of the day starting to burn you up. 43 degrees at the start, 81 degrees at the finish. At the end of the turn around you have about three and a half miles to the finish line.
I just aimed myself at getting to the finish line with as much energy as I could muster and being proud to have finished my 53rd marathon in the best shape I've been in for the last couple of years. So because of a few running mistakes I made executing the BCM I didn't BQ but, I finished large and in charge of my future running with a big huge Big Cottonwood medal and a t-shirt.
I ended up with a 4:25:55 run at BCM which was a 25 minute improvement over my last disastrous run at the 2015 Boston Marathon. Now it's time to turn my thoughts and efforts to getting myself ready to do the Authentic Athens Greece Marathon in a short eight weeks.......God bless you all and I'll see you in the funny papers!!!!
|
| |

| Race: |
Authentic Athens Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:54:44, Place overall: 7585, Place in age division: 184 | | Well here I am, one week post Authentic Athens Marathon and I'm happy to report that I am super fine and feeling great beyond my expectations.
I left for Athens with one split goal in mind. Get a BQ to return to Boston 2017 or run the Authentic Athens Marathon to have nothing but unadulterated fun.
This news just in: I had a ball in Greece, the people of this country were the friendliest most hospitable that I've met anywhere in the world. And to give a shout out to Marathon Tours & Travel for putting together a super tour package that included a world class marathon.
I must admit that before starting my travel to Greece I was a bit worried about the Syrian refugee problem in the Middle East. I was more concerned with this problem in Turkey and not so much Greece. This is why I passed up the opportunity to run Athens and Istanbul as a twofer in 11 days.
Nov 8, 2015 - Race Day - Athens Greece. I got as much sleep as I could the night before but soon figured out that I had burnt the candle at both ends mixing in more vacation with marathoning before the marathon. I must have been on my feet way too long the week before race day.
Anyway, race day morning started at 4:am with a prepared breakfast in the restaurant of the Hotel Hera with many of my new friends and runners from all over the world that I have met during my vacation. With breakfast finished we assembled in front of the hotel where our tour bus took us some 45 K to a stadium in Marathon Greece where we mixed and mingled with about 16000 runners from over 100 countries around the world.
The organization of this race was rather loose but very well organized. Plenty of "Green Temples of Doom" at and close by the starting line and lots of space to move around. The temperature was at 49 degrees, a wind coming in from behind from the sea with some early morning fog still in the area which started to burn off as the race started running directly into the morning sunshine.
9:00am, the race started sharply and the herd was off....It seemed to take about three miles or so to get into the open where one could open up and run ones race. I decided early on that I would enjoy myself and emerse myself in the moment of this historical race! Here I am running the 33rd running of the Authentic Atnens Marathon some 2500 years after Phidippides ran it, I'm here running in his footsteps from Marathon to Athens. It really was a once in a lifetime experience I will never forget.
The race starts off on a very slight down hill slope, very slight and very short and then fairly flat out to about 10k. I felt very good at this time running along looking at the sights, the sun was up and the heat was growing hotter quickly. At about 5km we ran around the Marathon Tomb and on towards Athens.
At @ 10Km the mostly flat rolly polly hills started a seemingly never ending up hill battle. The course seemed to remind me of the Boston Marathon Marathon even though the elevation on the course never went above 250 ft above sea level. We seemed to run through about seven different towns before reaching Athens. From about 5Km to 17.5Km the Mediterranean Sea was off to our right shoulders.
The crowd levels were higher in the town areas but were well represented in the rural areas. At about 20 Km the locals were out handing the runners Olive branch Lorals to wear on their heads as they pushed on to Atnens. The heat of the day really started coming on strong out about 20Km rising to about 75 0r 80 degrees by the end of the day.
The tallest of the hills on the course started at about 20Km and hit the top at about 30km where it turned into a gentle down hill run to the finish. I was feeling pretty good at this point in the race, even though I wasn't going all out. I continued putting one foot in front of the other and continuing to keep myself hydrated on the hot two lane black top.
Now it was on to Athens....at the end of the race you find yourself in downtown Athens, to the north & east you can see the Akropolis and other famous ancient ruins and just then your entering the marble 1896 Panthinaiko Stadium which was the Olympic Stadium built for the First Modern Olympics, and there I was running into it and headed to the finish line with the crowd in the stands welcoming all the runners to the end. It was glorious experience running this marathon in an ancient yet modern land for the rest of my time.
I finished the Marathon in 4:54:44 and I felt like Pheidippides running the 42 km from Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated at the battle of Marathon.
