Short-Term Running Goals:

2021 GOALS:

Be consistent.

Also, be less fat.

Race, if possible.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 15, and 17.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

4 on the trails. perfect weather, minimal coughing. I feel like after a month, I'm finally coming out of this mess. I'd like to thank everyone in the local medical community that did exactly jack squat to fix my situation. If it's not covid, they ain't interested.

In other news, I got a sweet $100 gift card to fit2run from a relative for Christmas. So I ran today in some old Saucony rides. Am I the only guy in the world that likes Rides more than Kinvaras? The original Hokas were excellent for a heel striker like me. And even though they were expensive, you could run in those things for like 1,000 miles. The newer Hokas seem to go flat much sooner. So I think I'm going to go in a non-hoka direction this time around. I'll keep going through old shoes for a while.

Totally agree with you on the Rides vs the kinvaras. The kinvaras also mess with my form. Are you a fan of the saucony endorphin speeds?

He was a good guy and a local runner that I used to compete against in several races. We weren't good friends or anything. But I have talked to him after many races. My mom probably talked to him more than me, due to his involvment with their church. At least once this happened; she told him on a Sunday, that I was bummed out that he beat me in a race Saturday.

There was an all-day Surf and skimboard competition at North Jetty that John was at. I went for a run during the morning part of that event. They had the awards on the island of Venice and after I dropped John off I remembered that this is a circus town. I pulled up at an intersection and the car next to me was full of clowns. Literal clowns. Red ball noses Etc. Besides every other thing around here being named Ringling you forget how much circus history is in this place.

I forgot to mention something notable that happened on yesterday's run. There's a woman that lives on my my street. She looks to be early 60's, and does all of her yardwork in a bikini. The boys and I refer to her as "Bikini Lady." She cuts her grass in flip flops and a bikini. Pressure washes her driveway in a bikini. Is on a ladder cleaning her gutters in a bikini. Goes on bike rides in a bikini. One time we were driving by, and she was on top of a ladder in the back of a pickup truck, with a pole saw, pruning trees in a bikini. I guess I'm more concerned from a OSHA standard than anything. So back to yesterday - Behind her house next to the sidewalk that starts my hood route runs is a shadow box fence - the kind that if you look right at it you can't see through, but on a 45 degree angle, the fence is useless. So as I was running by she was walking around her pool completely naked. I don't think I've ever seen a naked person while I was out running before. But I started thinking that at least she wears the bikini in the front yard. Today starts consectutive runs without seeing naked people. Today is 1.

So I have this situation.-  Maybe someone on this Utah-centric blog can help me out with this. We have been planning another family snowboard trip to Park City for a long time. We fly out 3/15. We fly back 3/21 (We land back in Tampa at midnight!). Since we planned the trip, my youngest (John) has done very well in performing a musical piece on a 4 valve Euphonium. Specifically this one:

https://youtu.be/wRUETWKxLT4

He has done so well that he was invited to compete in the state competition in Fort Pierce (other side of the state) on 3/22. That's right, we land at midnight 3/21, drive home to Venice by 2 am-ish, then load him on a bus to Fort Pierce on 3/22 at 7 in the morning. This is a big deal for a freshman. I'm proud of my boy for choosing such a difficult piece, and doing so well. But I look ahead to state's, and he's going to do this coming off a week with no practice? Not a recipe for success.

We have looked at all of the options for flying out and back with a Euphonium, and those are all pretty much out because we can not keep the horn safe loading on the plane. This leaves us with a short term rental for the horn while we are there.

So, does anyone have access to a horn, or a location I can have my son play a horn, for an hour a day from 3/15 to 3/21, within a reasonable distance from Park City? Or advice for what to do?

What's a reasonable distance? The high school where I teach is a 45 minute drive from PC. I could talk to the band director if you want.

From Tom K on Sun, Mar 06, 2022 at 14:03:33 from 47.201.50.24

There is a short term rental place in park city that hasn't responded yet. Their website looks like they rent guitars and such, not much in the way of brass instruments. A perfect solution would be if your band director has an unused horn, or a kid taking a week off from playing. 45 minutes each way every day, after snowboarding all day sounds like a lot. Please talk to your band director. I'm in a spot here. Thanks, Rob.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Mar 07, 2022 at 08:52:39 from 163.248.33.245

Hey Tom. Are you more interested in just finding a horn for him to play or a place to practice? Or both?

Sorry for the delay getting back.

From Tom K on Mon, Mar 07, 2022 at 15:32:35 from 47.206.202.65

Okay, we just got off the phone with Riverton Music in West Jordan. They will rent us a horn for 1 week. We will pick up the horn on the ride out to PC, spend a week snowboarding and annoying / entertaining our neighbors in Canyons resort with some awesome baritone-ing, then drop the horn off on our way back to the airport. Thanks for looking into this Rob.

From Tom K on Mon, Mar 07, 2022 at 15:37:16 from 47.206.202.65

The second after we booked the horn rental, we got a reply e-mail from the very nice band director at park city high school, saying he has an extra horn, and we can use the school's practice space, if we need it.

4 on the trails. Everything is covered in pollen around here at this time of year. I have a pain in the neck from sleeping on the plane(s). 80 degrees. 54% hum.?! 64 d.p.?!

What a week. Everything went smoothly for our park city snowboarding trip. Day of travel. 5 days of bombing the mountain. Day of travel. My sons became pretty decent at getting down the mountain safely, in various weather / snow conditions. We even got snow fall on some of the days. I had a great time with my brother. Wow do I miss that dude. Everything went great with the horn rental, and Johnny practiced daily. I don't have a lot of non-snowboard related stories from this trip. There was no sight seeing- we were really just there to get down the mountain as many times as possible, and I think we did well. The only downside was the travel home. Our Monday flights were cancelled on Sunday afternoon. Spouse did an extensive amount of work to get us home Monday. Left Salt Lake City at noon. To Denver, Milwaukee, and then to Fort Myers (not Tampa) at 10:45 pm. (This, I'm sure, represents the largest amount of time I have spent wearing a mask.) Slept a lot on the plane, but I am still messed up time wise.

So, when I was out running, my dad was out walking. I see him sometimes out there, but not today. He was doing a route around the baseball fields at wellfield park. The senior men's softball team was having practice. They called my dad over and asked him if he wanted to play next season. They said that there was only one week left in this season, but he could get on board for next season. They said that they have seen him out walking before, that he seems to be in good shape, and obviously likes baseball. My dad was beaming when he told me this story. He's 81. I asked him when he wanted me to pitch to him in the cages.

That feeling when you're a kid, and you're watching some other kids play something, and then they invite you to join? That never stops being an awesome feeling.

5 on thetrails. Then I saw my dad out for a walk, and I walked with him for a bit, then ran home. Out on the trails, I ran into a friend of mine, that told me he saw my kid acting up, doing stupid teenage stuff. It's a small town. It was a smaller town for me to grow up in, so news got back to my folks very fast. But now it's a small town with video cameras everywhere, that makes impulsive teenage decisions very hard to bounce back from. So, I have to have a talk with my kid when he gets home from school that I'm not looking forward to.

4 on the trails. Yesterday's talk went well. Before you have kids, you think "My kid will never.... ", like you have some control, ultimately. You have influence, but someday they are going to leave, and you've got to hope they make smart decisions. You really don't have that much control. They are going to do what they are going to do. And if they are teenage boys, it's going to be stupid.

I don't mean to be so cryptic. Word got back to me that my kid was doing burnouts in the McDonald's parking lot. Stupid. For a truck we bought a month ago. Stupider. At the McDonalds where he works. Are-you-kidding-me Stupid. On tires we just got for close to $1,000. Now that's just insultingly Stupid.

How do you start a conversation like that?

When I went around the corner to where the fields are, the smell was striking and overwhelming. So on my next lap, I was coming up on this couple I have seen out there walking many times, but I have never heard their voices. So I said - "Hey that smell is not me. It's the manure out there. Ha Ha." And the guy responds with the most Boston accent I have ever heard - "Nah. Dat's bahbcaht whizz." And then goes on to explain the fragrance differences between an entire soccer field, covered in manure, and "bahbcaht whizz." And then weirdly got kind of mad at me when I told him I thought it was the manure. He really wanted me to accept his expertise on this subject matter.

6:30 pm. new experiment. treadmill running. 3.9 miles. treadmill shut off after 35 minutes. I did not know that was a thing. lessons learned: 1. After 30 minutes, jump on next treadmill. Mop up both treadmills after an hour. 2. 8:57 pace on a treadmill is really smooth, and not at all like 8:57 pace outside. 3. bring a towel. 4. Schedule running time when a specialized workout class is not taking place. They were very distracting.

I could see incorporating more treadmill stuff in my future.

Also my sons took thier first road trip without their parents today. They drove 3 hours to Fort Lauderdale (across alligator alley) to hang out with their cousins for a half a week. Before school starts next week. I'm not the most overprotective dad, but this one got to me a bit. I was nervous.
