Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

Finally under 4 hours! 3:42:26. 8:29 pace.

Great food. Very Flat Track. The half marathoners ate and drank nearly everything after the race. There was not much left for the full marathoners, but what was there was tasty. Shrimp and grits and sausage.

This is a very small race. I didn't run out of gas in the late miles, as I expected. (Despite my excessive 4 mile warm-up). There were problems with some hairpin turns, and the last 100 yards is across grass, which I wasn't ready for. There was a bounce house in the finish area, so, at least, the kids were happy while I was running.

2 mile warm up.

10k my watch had 44:12. 7:08 pace. Race was windy as all get-out on the intracostal. This was not my best race. I had orientation for the night job (in Manattee County, @30 miles away), after the race. So when they delayed the start (due to the fact that they had too few restrooms, and everyone was using them when the race was supposed to start), I started getting nervous about getting to my orientation. They started the race @ 20 minutes late. I considered pulling out of the race. Anyway, I ran it. It felt terrible. I think I was 4th in my age group. I grabbed a couple of bottles of water and ran back to my car (@1.5 miles) against the flow of finishing runners. Then drove like a sweaty lunatic to get to orientation. It was a 6 hour orientation. I had my running shorts on under my jeans for the whole time. Gross. I'm sure all the new recruits loved my B.O. I saw my mom and brother at mile 1. It was great to see them. I knew they just came from the hospital.

So, I hope they get that restroom situation figured out before next year. I have to run this one again. There are not a lot of races in Venice. I can't hold a grudge over this one incident.

I was the running leg of the Triathlon Relay. Out of the Relay teams, we had the fastest running time. It is very weird starting a race, when you don't know "when" you will start. You stand there waiting with the other relay runners, waiting for your bike to come in. You don't know when that will happen. There was a lot of fumbling with the ankle bracelet timepiece. I am pleased with getting a 20:08. This is a big improvement over my previous 5k. It was a lot of fun to do this race with friends, and although I don't see myself becoming a triathlete in the future, I would be willing to be on their relay team any time. Our team finished 4th, out of (I think) 13 teams.

Race: Steamtown Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:13:15
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.0026.2026.20

SteamTown Marathon! PR'd by a half an hour? What the what what? What an end to a spectacular family vacation! This course is point to point, and has @ 900' of elevation loss. My pre-race strategy was to shoot for 3:29ish. I devoted a considerable amount of time to my plan for this course. I know because of the way this course is laid out, a negative split was not in my future. Besides, I have faded late in my previous 3 marathons. Why would this one be different? I had 4 Gu packs with me. I planned on taking one every 45 minutes, also drinking water for the first half, gatorade on the second half of the race. Sweatsocks on the hands, 2 cut-off t-shirt sleeves over my ears, and throw way t-shirts over my race shirt. I had it all figured out. I sent an e-mail to my friends that this race would be a showcase of my perfectly excecuted plan.

It was a freakishly long bus ride to the start. Earlybird that I am, I was on the first bus. It felt like more than a marathon distance away from the finish, where we got on. We were greeted by cheerleaders getting off the bus. I was a star! We were brought into a gym, where they had signs on the wall, so you could meet up with folks running your pace. I sat down with the 3:20 crowd. Nice guys. One guy travelled from Seattle. Another guy was local. Both of them had run this race before. Everyone you meet that talks about this race advises against banking time on the early downhill. They say you will destroy your quads before you need them on the uphills at the end. This is a redundant theme, discussed over and over again. I stepped outside to hear the national anthem, a few words from the mayor, and then they fired a civil war cannon. It was really loud! If you see footage of the start of this race, the cameraman shakes at the fire of the cannon.

At the fire of the cannon, all of my pre-race strategy went completely out the window.

Generally speaking, I was in a free fall nosedive for the first mile, to the point where I wondered if my legs could keep up with me, without falling on my face. After that, I had abandoned my excellent race plan. I don't have individual splits for the race, but I'm guessing that first mile is my fastest mile ever. The first 20 miles are downhill, then you have 3 flat miles, then up and down for the last 3. At 11 miles, I was running 7 minute pace. I knew what I was doing was crazy, but I decided to ride this horse as long as possible. Local fans were everywhere along the course cheering, sometimes with boomboxes. I tried to say "thank you" to as many as I could. Then the course goes on to a riverside trail with beautiful fall colored leaves. I didn't really prepare for trail running, but I found it to be a nice break. I knew that if I could be @ 2:27 at mile 20, a BQ could be possible. If I was @ 2:37, my pre-race goal was possible. I was under 2:27. The hills at the last 3 miles are substantial. After going up the worst of them, they have the disabled children that this race is a charity for at the top. I'm thinking that is a strategic move. I mean, you don't want to stop in front of the people you are raising money for, that can't run themselves, right? There was a band in the front yard of someone's house @ mile 24. They were playing "born to run" as I went by. That gave me a little kick. I took off the T-shirt headbands, Sweatsock mittens, and remaining overshirts @ mile 25. (My bib belt was loose for this whole race, and I was constantly adjusting it. That was annoying as all get out.) The last tenth of a mile is a slow downhill, so I had some energy left in the tank to pump my arm to the crowd as I came down the stretch. I adjusted my shirt so that the race announcer could clearly read my number, butcher my last name, and crack a joke about "cold enough for you?" when he found out I was from Florida. I was nearly crying when they took my picture with the medal (mostly because my wife was crying). You know, you devote so much to this, and then you surpass your expectations, and then things get emotional.

After the race, I sat with a nice 64 year old man, who was proud of PR-ing by 6 minutes. After I told him what I had done, there was some fatherly advice to "cherish this," because I will never PR by a half hour again.

Is beating your qualifying time by 1 minute 45 seconds enough to get into Boston? I guess we'll find out in September 2013. I look forward to seeing how fast I am on a flat track (like Baton Rouge in January).

BEST FAMILY VACATION EVER!

Amazing run! You crushed that race.... and were by far the tannest guy out there. Congrats on the BQ! Very elusive.... I'm still trying.

Your recap describes an unbelievable race. Way to make it happen. I hope your margin is enough to get into Boston. To keep pace with your improvement, you only need to run a 6:15 per mile pace marathon next time... :)

From Tom K on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 11:35:22 from 71.228.90.171

Ha! "Only need to run a 6:15 per mile pace?" That's my 5k pace, Kam!

From Kam on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 11:47:26 from 68.66.163.179

Yeah, I'm totally kidding, Tom. Enjoy this one for a while, then attack the next one with whatever vigor you can muster. Chasing PR's is great, isn't it?

Hey, I've been on a post race high for 7 months now, and you guys reminding me of this race is probably the best thing that's going to happen to me today! Thanks! If I could re-live that post race feeling and conversation with the older man for 5 minutes a day for the rest of my life, I would. I was starting to wonder how I did it, or if I could ever beat that time. You've got me psyched up now. I better get running!

From I Just Run on Wed, Apr 24, 2013 at 13:26:36 from 67.79.11.242

I had to look twice at this before realizing you ran it back in October. We weren't best friends back then so that's why I didn't comment earlier. This was a great race! I hope you make it to Boston because I'll be there pushing myself to run a pace closer to yours. :-)

I ran 5 miles down and back on the Legacy Trail, with the boys riding bikes. It seemed like a good easy run a week after the race. An experiment of running with my sons. I feel like it was about an 8 minute mile pace, but I didn't time it. I was just making sure the boys were staying out of everyone else's way. There were lots of water stops. About 7.5 miles into it, Tommy fell off his bike, Momma came and picked him up, and I finished the run with Johnny. Then we went to meet everyone at the hospital.

The results of the experiment (I'm saying) are inconclusive. I'm holding out hope that I can do this again, without anyone breaking bones.

Thanks for the comment!

It is a really nice run in the morning, with the sun coming up over Roberts Bay and Dona Bay. They used to bring the animals over the Circus Bridge (in the old days)to the Ringling winter home in Venice. The circus came down on a train line, that is now the Legacy Trail.

This is more Venice History than you were looking for, isn't it?

I'm not sure how to rate miles as "fast" or "slow." So, for now, I'm going with: Anything faster than 7:15 pace is "fast." Anything slower than 7:15 pace is "slow."  Since 7:15 is what I hope my next marathon pace will be.

I would have been faster had it not been for auto traffic, and an unaware text-er.

(Keep telling yourself: It's just a training run. It's just a training run. It's just a training run.)

Great sunset. I see the up-side of daylight savings right now.

Hi again Tom,

I came over to visit and noticed you have no friends :-( Can I be your freind? Oh, and I might come and visit you since you live in Florida :-)

Looks like you've made some great strides in your running cutting an hour off your marathon time. You'll be breaking the 3:00 mark soon I'm sure.

Hope you enjoy the blog...and nice running!

From Tom K on Tue, Nov 06, 2012 at 09:41:25 from 71.228.90.171

Friends? Is that like Favorite Blogs? Sounds good. I just have to figure out how, exactly, to do that.

It sounds like we started running about the same time. I've been running for about 2.5 years. 1st training run Was Feb. 28, 2010.

Thanks for the kind words about the running improvements. Sub 3? Man, I just don't know about that one. Is that what my next goal should be? Wow, you folks are demanding! I've only been here a week, and you're already nagging me! (typed in sarcasm font).

Friends, favorite blogs...yes :-)

We did start running about the same time but you have made much bigger improvements than me. I'm hoping that's because I'm MUCH older than you :-)

You should check out a few of my favorites blogs. several of them are in the pursuit of the 2:?? marathon. I just like to hang around the fast guys and dream! BTW...hope you have "thick skin" :-)

From Tom K on Tue, Nov 06, 2012 at 10:16:50 from 71.228.90.171

I worry that my improvements have more to do with wise course selection, than they do with my increased running capabilities. If you ran a race with a 900' elevation drop, you would rip it, too.

I only have to share the road with a few dead skunks, opossums and such. Pretty lonely where I run!

From Tom K on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 16:41:23 from 71.228.90.171

Dead skunks, huh? Hmmmm. I get snowbirds milling about without any sense of their surroundings, with dogs on 20' leashes, and you get dead skunks. IJR, if I could run your track, I would. I can at least count on a dead skunk to not have unpredictable movements.

From Ken Bess on Thu, Nov 08, 2012 at 10:22:54 from 174.52.148.34

That's funny about the dogs on 20' leashes, I get those too. I tend to worry more about the dogs on 20' leashes than the dogs without leashes since it's not difficult to justify pepper spraying an angry dog with no leash.

From Tom K on Thu, Nov 08, 2012 at 10:42:23 from 71.228.90.171

Ha Ha! So, you're saying I should run while packing heat? And if Fido gets in my way, well, then...

Wait, that's why I complain about it here. I don't want to be "that guy."

Eventually my running log would read like:

"xx miles, xx:xx time, x:xx pace, Trucked 2 pedestrians, maced 3 dogs, trampled 5 geckos, great sunset, smooth run."

From Ken Bess on Thu, Nov 08, 2012 at 11:35:13 from 174.52.148.34

Who said anything about if Fido gets in your way? You've got an interesting way of interpreting.

I've never pepper sprayed a dog or a person, but if the dog were attacking I wouldn't hesitate. I've been bitten twice, allowing that to happen a third time would be foolish. It is very easy to distinguish a dog that is going to bite from a dog that is friendly. Spraying a dog with pepper spray that will wear off in 15 mins is a lot more humane solution than going into the dog and breaking its ribs. The first time I was attacked by a dog it was a dog on very long leash that latched on to my thigh. The owner was more angry at me than at their dog for attacking me. An attacking dog with no leash is a clear cut situation, an attacking dog with a leash is not a situation that I would like to ever find myself in again.

From Tom K on Thu, Nov 08, 2012 at 11:52:00 from 71.228.90.171

Sorry, man. Just a joke. Less funny than I as hoping for, but just a joke.

The thought of actually getting bit by a dog never crosses my mind, because it's never happened to me (and I'm sorry that it has happened to you). I'm more worried about getting tangled in the leash. Again, I'm sorry if I offended you.

The goal for today was to see if I could get more total miles out of running 3 lap intervals (in 4:45), as opposed to 4 laps (in 6:20). The 3 lap experiment:

3.5 miles warm up to track: 27:48. 4 minutes rest.

3 laps: 4:37. 4 minutes rest.

3 laps: 4:40. 4 minutes rest.

3 laps: 4:47. 4 minutes rest.

3 laps: 4:47. 4 minutes rest.

2.5 mile run home. 20:25.

So I got 3 miles of intervals in. I would have liked to run 6 total for 4.5 miles, but I'll take what I get. Would it have been better to run (3) 1 mile intervals?

Could I have done that? There's no way of knowing, I guess.

I think 4:45 may be too fast for me right now. Next go around, I think I'll try for 3 laps under 5 minutes. I should be able to get 6 of those, I think.

All in all, I am pleased at the results of today. Thanks to those on this blog that contributed to the idea.

I didn't have high hopes going into this race. A box of ceramic tile fell on my left pinky toe on Wednesday night, so I couldn't run Thursday or Friday. Since most of the swelling and blue color had gone away, my plan was to go out there and warm up, and see how things felt. Warm up felt okay. I was aware of the toe, for sure, but not really in pain. I didn't start my watch at the start of the race, so I was lost for pace. The kids they had at the "1" and "2" mile stations were saying some ridiculously fast numbers (5:55, 11:40). I knew they were incorrect in the times they were calling out. I passed people for the first half mile, then pretty much locked into my pace for the rest of the race. I was passed by a guy with @ 70 yards to go. I was really surprised about my time. 19:17, 6:13 pace. I ran this race last year and got 21:01. So the improvements this year have been huge. My family is pretty excited about me winning a plaque, instead of a medal. Masters division winner? Totally unexpected.

I have a 10k next month, that I am considering breaking my right pinky toe for.

About a mile into it, I realized I was pulling up my toes on my left foot, kind of in a self defense mode for the injured toe. I didn't even know i was doing it. Once I figured it out, the on-coming shin tenseness went away. Weird. Slight breeze out of the east, making the return trip a little tougher than the way out.

I am going to have to find a way to build up miles in the upcoming weeks. It was a tentative goal of mine to break 2,000 miles this year. It's going to be real close, but I'm going to have to work at it. I am about 300 miles away from it. 4.6 per day ain't gonna get it done.

From Tom K on Tue, Nov 20, 2012 at 09:42:11 from 71.228.90.171

Agreed. Those miles do not count.

I have some miles to enter into the computer this weekend. Of course, entering old runs will cut into my present tense running. Logging every run from paper to this blog, at one per minute, running average @ 5 days a week, from January through September, should take me..... 3 hours, 13 minutes. 30*9*5/7 = 192.8 minutes, right? Well, that's just great! Another area that I need to improve my pace!

Today's run got me thinking. I  usually do runs (not races) of distances greater than 6 or 7 miles with a Camelbak. The idea is that it is just a training run, and I'd rather have water and not need it than need water and not have it. I was surprised with additional time to run today, so I used that time for additional miles. I didn't have my Camelbak, so I had to stash water behind a bush at halfway. Long story short...I'd rather have the Camelbak. Anyhow, I was just wondering what the popular view is on this around here. Do you go out prior to your run, and strategically place water, or do you prefer a means of taking your water with you?

From I Just Run on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 07:44:26 from 67.79.11.242

I have always stashed my water in strategic locations but now that you mention it I think I should try a camelbak. I believe one of my biggest problems on long runs is dehydration. You wouldn't beleive how much I sweat and I don't think I drink enough water. I don't think I drink enough or at the right time with the stash method. I really think your method is better. I guess the only disadvantage to the camelback is carrying the extra weight.

From Tom K on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 09:31:06 from 71.228.90.171

I figure the extra weight represents @ 20 seconds per mile slower. That's just my guess from running with one of these things over the last 3 years. I haven't logged which runs have the pack, and which ones do not, so I can't be entirely sure. If you are using it for "easy" runs, where the distance is more important than the time, why not?

From SlowJoe on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 09:31:26 from 155.219.241.11

I'm to lazy to plant bottles, and usually don't bring any liquids unless I'm going at least 11 or 12 miles. Don't like being weighed down, but will carry a 20oz throwaway gatorade bottle when running over 90 minutes or so, and just nurse that for the first 5 miles.

For longer runs (18+) I will sometimes wear a fuel belt that carries 16-32oz in addition to the throwaway gatorade bottle. Even that ends up being overkill if it's cool outside.

You might be surprised at how little water you actually need if it's not hot outside. Then again, I don't live in S Florida! During the summer those numbers/distances change for me but I still just go with the handheld bottle and fuel belt combo when needed.

From Tom K on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 13:45:53 from 71.228.90.171

2,700+ miles?, you're probably not lazy. If YOU'RE lazy, then I'm a couch potato. It's just when you want to run, it's time to go. The time it takes to fill the pack feels like an eternity sometimes, when I want to go. Going out and staging bottles would even be more time consuming, like an overly extended welcome, before a race.

I have noticed the need for less water lately. I'm not sure if it is the temperature dropping, or a result of my training. Maybe I should try to go further without the "security blanket" Camelbak.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Weekend re-cap:

Got out of work @ 5:30 Wednesday. Ran 4.6 miles. Drove home, packed, and drove 4.5 hours to Jax. Arrived at 1:30.

Got up Thursday, Ran my 7.88 miles, then another 3.5 with Shannon. Played with 10 kids under the age of 13 until 2 pm. The kids ran races in the yard. Ate fantastic Thanksgiving Dinner. (This is where marrying into a southern family pays off!) Smoked Turkey, Fried Turkey, Sweet Potato Casserole, 5 pies, etc. Went to bed early.

Got up Friday, Ran my 7.88 miles, showered, then back in the car to Venice. I tried to sleep for a couple of hours. In to work at 8pm. Got out of work at 8 am. Drove to my parents' house and had bacon and eggs. Then I went home and slept for 5 hours.

I woke up for the Gator game kickoff, and went running for the first half. 12.9 miles. When the Gators play the Seminoles, it is the best time to run. There is NO traffic. Went home, showered, then dinner with the folks, watched my Gators win, tried to add some historic runs to the blog, failed, and went to bed.

Got up Sunday, did my honeydo's (christmas stuff out of the attic, etc.), went to church, came home and ran another 12.9. The wife and kids should be here @ 7 pm. I'm now attempting to enter in more old runs, and give the illusion that I have been cleaning.

It was a very busy, and very satisfying weekend. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Ha! Sorry, man.

In re-visiting old runs: I'm back to February now. These times are getting pretty slow. I took a night job in April. The weird thing is; my running started improving once my time was limited for an additional 24-30 hours per week. I no longer have choices of when I can run. If there is time available, I go. Going back through these old runs is an eye-opener. Thanks for being a pain in the butt, and making me do this.

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 07:24:26 from 67.79.11.242

I'm glad to be a pain in the butt! The only problem I have is now you have more miles than me for the year :-( I did stop running and cycled for two months in the summer. I accumulated about 2,000 cycling miles so that should count for something :-) I'm not a big proponent of "junk miles" like a lot of runners...but what do I know, I've only been running a couple of years. Congradulations on getting all of your past runs into the blog, that was a feat in itself!

New record for this run!

Didn't run yesterday. My son had the pins removed from his finger from when he broke it, so  I kind of needed to hang out with him last night. I'd like to say today's increase in pace is due to taking last night off from running, but it is more likely due to there are more runners and faster runners out on my course than I have seen before. Where did these guys come from? Anyway, I think they got ticked when I passed them! Ha! So then they ran past me up the bridge (I think) to prove a point. Whatever, I passed them again later. Yo pal, put a shirt on!

Isn't it amazing what can happen when you're racing people that don't know they are in a race?

p.s. I notice a lot of folks up north (Am I the southernmost blogger?) are putting up the temperatures in on their runs lately. 73 degrees. Brrrr!

Good running Tom! I think you're just getting faster, you should just submit to that fact!

I sure don't have anybody to race where I run. This morning I only had one car pass me on the entire run....well, it was at 4:30 am :-)

From Tom K on Fri, Nov 30, 2012 at 08:00:42 from 71.228.90.171

I feel like I am getting faster, but we'll see next race day what happens. If it weren't for the "sweet toe," I might be faster still. Even if my "competition" is running at a snail's pace, I see them ahead of me, and I am working out my plan for how to go around them, etc. At that moment, I am not thinking about my breathing, how my foot is hitting the ground, etc. Usually, I complain about the crowding, but really, it makes me go faster. Tomorrow, I'm going long on a course where I'll be by myself most of the time. Just me and running and plenty of time to think about how tired I am, or that last hill didn't feel right, or whatever. No distractions = slower times, in my world.

Have I only been here a month? Seems longer.

From Tom K on Thu, Dec 06, 2012 at 09:06:18 from 71.228.90.171

Hogs are scary. And delicious.

Race: Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic 10k (6.21 Miles) 00:41:22, Place in age division: 3
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

This is an out and back course. You go over 2 bridges. I'm sure it is scenic, but this morning I ran through very dense fog. There was @ 100 yards of visibility, I'm guessing. I felt the humidity in my breathing towards the end of the race. Going back over the big bridge at the end was a little more difficult than I anticipated, and I'm blaming the fog. The race results aren't up on the website yet. Maybe they will be here: http://www.saynotodrugs.com/finish-results tomorrow.

Since they started the 5k-ers and 10k-ers together, I knew it would be crowded at the start. My plan was to dodge people until I got to the bridge, then (I figured) that the pack would clear on the uphill. The bridge downhill would propel me to a faster pace. My plan was to hold this pace as long as possible. I actually executed everything in my plan, which is a new one for me. Usually, I hear the gun, and then forget everything I planned, but not today. There were a couple of surprises in the race. First, the distance from the second bridge to the turn around point was longer than I expected. Second, on the way back, the ramp down from the second bridge was what they called a "helix." It is like a 6'-8' wide circling ramp down. This is at @ 5 miles into the race, or so. When you go through this part of the track, you are now mixed in with all of the super slow 5k-ers. So the narrow course width, coupled with running in tight circles while descending 40 feet or so, in a crowded area, has a huge impact on the pace. Once you get through running down that spiraling ramp, you go through 2 back-to-back hairpin turns, which I can't see how anyone could run through that part of the course without stopping. I had to stop to make the second hairpin. Once you come out of the hairpins, you are going uphill. So at that point, pace was entirely lost. It was almost like starting a new race. Given the size of the field in this race, I didn't think I would place in my age group, so that was a nice surprise. I was happy beating my goal time of 42 minutes. They gave me a plaque for my 3rd place age group finish. Interestingly, there was 12 seconds between 1st and 3rd place. 12 seconds! That will drive me nuts later. They served blueberry pancakes after the race. Good Stuff! Also, the shirt is pretty sweet.

I really need to lay down some miles for next month's marathon. Time to get going.

The running has been good (by my standards). Your Sunday run looks very solid, dude! And with the sniffles? Way to go!

He turned 6 Friday. So, When I picked him and his brother up from school, his teacher told me that he was over-excited about his birthday, and had been acting up all day. I just kind of laughed. "You know what? After the news I heard today, this kid is getting ice cream, like right now. I'll worry about being a good parent tomorrow."

Spouse put a lot of work into making a baseball field cake for Sunday. Delicious, easily one of the top 3 baseball fields I've ever eaten. Not the best pre-running diet, though.

Thanks, man. It was slow, clunky, and mechanical (whatever the opposite of “floating” is.) But yes, I ran anyway. I’m kind of flipping out because it’s only 32 days until race day, and the longer distance running seems to have left me. I'm trying not to yell "Everything's messed up!" because of an off night. I’ll see what I can do tonight. I'd like to get better than 9 smooth miles.

by looking back at your running training it appears you're one of those guys who can do amazing things without a lot of miles. When was the last time you ran 18+ miles on a training run? I think if you concentrate on getting to the strating line healthy you will do fine!

20.75 miles. Legacy Trail. 2:43:12. 7:52 pace. I haven't gone more than 20 miles since my last marathon, almost 3 months ago. So, in honor of this momentous occasion, I'm going to attempt to write today's run report, like I'm Kendall. Just so there is no confusion, I am writing this way because I like the way Kendall writes. This is not intended to be mocking.

The temperature dropped last night, making for a brisk noontime, post church run. The sky was azure, with streaks of wispy clouds. As I crossed the first bridge of my run, I noticed the winter low tide common to Venice. The exposed oyster beds made for a good lunch spot for groups of turkey vultures. Although their circling patterns seemed random and uncoordinated to me, I can't help but feel it makes sense to them, in their own turkey vulture society.

As I worked my way alongside the intracoastal waterway, few boats passed me. But the boats on the water today were large, leaving shimmering "V' shaped" patterns reflecting through the no wake zones. Across the waterway, I could clearly see the construction cranes at rest on the Venice High School Campus. The dark outlines stood out in sharp contrast against the clear, sunny sky.

The new Chistmas present Jet Blackberry flavored Gu I ate at the halfway point was a pleasant surprise. After an hour and 20 minutes of tasting nothing, the sweet flavors awakened me.

On the way back, As I passed the former Nokomis Elementary School (which is now a playground) I could hear the echoes of children's laughter across the soccer fields. Immediatedly after, I ran through a stand of Australian Pines. The winds passing through the needles produced a "Shhh" sound, almost requesting that the playground children quiet themselves.

Although the temperatures had cooled overnight, I found myself repeatedly warmed by the smiles I encountered from fellow pedestrians and cyclists.

This is too hard.

Maybe the next run report should be in iambic pentameter!
