Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

Crazy today, right? I keep hoping some kind of winter will show up, but days like this may be the best we get.

From Tom K on Sun, Jan 03, 2016 at 20:13:05 from 174.58.54.215

It has been in the 80s for so long now, that anything else feels like excellent running weather.

P.s. Sorry about asking you if you were running a race that you specifically mentioned that you weren't running, literally the day before. Derp.

From allie on Sun, Jan 03, 2016 at 20:32:42 from 24.99.46.55

just barely dodged those 80 degree temps...therefore, i thought florida was an excellent place to run. :)

my favorite part about florida was waiting 10 minutes for the drawbridge in st. augustine to let a pirate ship through. that never happens in ATL.

Tom, looks like it's time to update the short term goals to 2016. I'm sure this year will bring on even more improvement. You have come a long ways since 2011.

From Tom K on Mon, Jan 04, 2016 at 09:54:58 from 66.87.123.157

I am still working out the local races that build up to it, but Sugarloaf in May, in Maine, is the next marathon. We are signed up and flights are booked. I was thinking of writing some sort of big picture typed post. But i haven't got to it. I lose a lot of time waiting on pirate ships at bridge openings. It's a really time consuming thing down here!

From Rhett on Mon, Jan 04, 2016 at 11:44:07 from 24.121.249.174

That's the price you pay to live in such a beautiful place. That and...hurricanes, alligators, snakes, floods, ok I'll stop. :)

7:30 pm: Island Walk mini-bridges. 2.4 up. weight training. 2.4 down.

I just thought I would get some “year in review / looking ahead” thoughts down. Short version – What happened in Savannah changed my thinking about what I am trying to accomplish as a runner. I am going for sub 3 at Sugarloaf. The rest of this is going to be kind of disjointed, so whatever.

I’ve been hesitant to call that sub 3 shot. Well, we go on these cool trips, and I never thought I would qualify for Boston, so time isn’t really the goal, and countless other excuses for not trying that I have unloaded on this blog. Well, now I have called it out.

Savannah went bad. I knew it wasn’t going to be a PR, but not just because of the weather. Something was off at the start line. Yes, the kids’ football seasons really beat up my training. But as I understand it, the kids get even more involved with things as they get older, so my time to train will become less and less. My training has been so uninspired since Boston, that I was starting to wonder why I was doing this. Then we got home, and I was kind of bummed. Then we had Thanksgiving, and Andy’s wedding, and Johnny’s birthday, and Christmas, and New year’s, and Tommy changing schools, and yesterday, my birthday. I have eaten so much cake in the last month!

If I am going to get sub 3, it’s got to happen soon. It’s only going to get harder. I had originally rough scheduled 2016 to go – Jackson, MS in January, Brookings, SD in May (I’ll get there eventually, Matt), and then RnR Vegas in November. I was kind of psyched for Jackson, as it would be my 10th marathon, on the anniversary of my first marathon.

More awkward candor - I have a coach. I have had a coach since before joining this blog. I didn’t say so in the beginning, and then more time passed to where it would be weird to admit having a coach here. He’s seasonal in Florida. He spends half the year in Canada, and half in Island Walk, where I have been running on Mondays and Thursdays lately. The first time I met him was a week after MCM, and I was really down. He said he could knock a half hour off my marathon time. He said that without ever seeing me run. 2 months later, I got a half hour off. Back then, he set up the plan, and it was up to me to execute it. Then, for a while, I would send him e-mails, letting him know how I was doing, and the coaching was much more distant. But now, He wants me to get sub 3, probably as much as I do. He has a really good resume, as a coach.  I am honored at the amount of time and advice he has given me.

Okay, so looking ahead – The plan is to get my weekly mileage up to @ 60-70. For January, February and into March I’m going to stick with this weight training plan he has me working on Mondays and Thursdays. Wednesday night speed work – either at the track, the Island Walk hilly course, or Celery Mound. Every run I do will have some component of race pace running, even if it is for 100 yards. I beefed up about 15 pounds at the tail end of the year, so there is much focus on weight right now. I am 182, and ideal race weight is @ 165ish. I need to run more races. Racing is not running. Nothing can prepare you for a race like a bunch of races. Coach is a big believer in those charts that say “if you can run a 5k in x, then you can run a 10k in y, and you can run a marathon in z.” So racing these local races will either let me know I’m on the right track, or make me lose hope.

My family is on board with the plan, and are being remarkably accommodating. I am going to try to not let this take over our family schedule, but I can see where that could happen.

I think that is about enough for one night.

All good stuff Tom. You will do it!

From SlowJoe on Fri, Jan 08, 2016 at 06:47:43 from 107.77.80.64

I like pretty much everything in this post. I've always thought 60-70 mpw was right where you need to be to really race a marathon...and recently came to the same conclusions about racing a lot, too.

Getting in the mileage is always tricky, given that we're not professional athletes and running is generally pretty far down on the priority list. I always felt a little guilty to bail on my limited family time for a double, but if was only for a few months, my wife would be ok with it.

Also like that you posted the goals/plan - I try to do the same...even though I know no one REALLY cares, there's something about putting it on FRB that makes me feel accountable and it works pretty well!

Does your coach have some long MP runs in there (mostly just curious)? My best sub-3 indicator is 10 @ 7:40-45, followed by 10 @ 6:40-45. You're ready at that point.

From Tom K on Fri, Jan 08, 2016 at 07:33:41 from 66.87.122.147

Thanks, all. D, i hate to nag but, are you signed up yet?

Joe, the plan is not that detailed yet. Although i have seen you and jason and drew and others really key on 10 @ mp + 1, 10 @ mp typed run. i am running 12.9 tomorrow, and right now I'm just looking to beat the 8 minute man.

From Drew on Fri, Jan 08, 2016 at 07:41:36 from 24.73.66.122

Hey Tom - I also like that you are putting your goals and process down, even if it feels like a stretch.

The way I think about it, if it were my last day on earth, would I be happier if I had guarded my aspirations and never fell short in the eyes of others? Or would it be better to put some goals out there, because that does provide internal accountability, and external support.

All committed runners face very similar challenges, and I find the overwhelming majority eager to give support.

From Derunzo on Fri, Jan 08, 2016 at 15:16:04 from 98.229.177.205

Not yet Tom, but I fully intend to. I've already made my intentions clear to my family and they are on board.

My co-worker Jim will be running the race as well. He's shooting for a 3:15 or lower. He's 56 with a personal best of 2:37 as a younger man. I'm pretty sure Jim has run over 50 marathons to date.

I was introduced to SBVD about 10 months ago. I still don't like him. I also don't see him too often, now that I'm not running the Ringling Bridge anymore. This guy (antisocial wrong direction board shorts guy) started showing up at the track on Wednesdays about a year ago. And since he runs in the wrong direction, I pass him, like, 2 times a lap. One week, I'm going to say something different to him every time we pass each other, just to see what happens.

Beautiful morning. I started later than usual (7:30ish). As I was headed south, and I crossed the bays, the angle of the sun reflected off the water through the pickets of the railing, and it created this strange strobe light effect. I had to run those bridges with my left eye closed.

Late start for the island walk mini bridges workout, so i had to cut this a bit short. 2.4 up. 4 x 800 (2:55, 3:05, 2:59, 3:02), 1.2 down. I wish i could have got 6 in tonight, but there was no time. Weather was just abput perfect. These bridge runs are like the anti-tempo runs. You can't hold a steady pace for any consistent amount of time. I feel like they are doing some good.

Race: 5k for Kicks (3.11 Miles) 00:19:49, Place overall: 4, Place in age division: 1
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.003.116.11

Fundraiser for Venice High Soccer - 5k for Kicks. 55 deg. Race started at 8. I got there super early. I drove the course, then stretched for a long time, then warmed up for a long-ish time. Less than 100 runners. Very quick start. This woman said "Okay, I'll be starting you off. Ready Set. Go!" That sent most people fumbling for their watches. After about a half mile, I was in 6th place. Before the turn around, I passed 2 people, then ran all alone for the rest of the race.

I wanted a better time than this, and, as usual, I have excuses. The left calf held up better than I expected during the race, but became increasingly more stiff during church.

It amazes me that there are (5) 5ks in this location every year, but every one has a slightly different course. THIS is where we run races around here. They start at Sharkeys and go to the end of Caspersen Beach, then turn around to finish with some sort of loop around the lake at Maxine Barritt Park. Every race. But the exact location of the start, the turn around, and the loop around the lake are all different. This particular race extends the turnaround point to the playground at Caspersen. Which means you run on unpaved road for @250 yards at halfway. Which means, when it rains extensively, like this week, you are looking down, avoiding pot holes and puddles. Also, this route had a hair pin turn before the last 50 yards on grass.

I do not think a PR was within reach today, even without the odd course. And I have some work cut out for me. But racing more often is part of the process in this marathon build-up, and it had to start somewhere. I have a 15k next month, and then March has 10k, 8k, 12k, and another 10k. I expect greatness in all of those.

Venice High's soccer coach was my coach in under 14s. I didn't get to see him there. I was kind of looking forward to that.

My mom usually yells at corrects the announcer when they butcher my big polish last name. Today, I told her not to. Instead the announcer handed me the mike, so I could say it. For some reason, the crowd decided to say it back to me, after I said it, like I was teaching them a new language. Funny stuff.

Gasparilla 15k. 1:04:37. 6:56 pace. 149th place overall. 15th age group.

Met Mike M and Drew from the blog. Drew is neither a fat man, nor a unicorn.

Had to get up at 3, and met coach at 4, and we hit the road. They would not let me in to get my bib until 6. Race starts at 6:45. How they process that many people that fast is beyond me.

I lined up behind the elites. There were a few words from Bart Yasso, Shalane F., and Meb. (Impressive, I thought). I talked to a woman down on vacation from Ohio. She was shooting for 1:03. I think she got it. She had great pacing. And when she passed me at mile 7, she said some encouraging words. Nice lady.

I ran the second half slower than the first, like i do. I could read a bunch in to this race result in both good and bad directions. Obviously, if I want to run a sub 3 in May, this is not good news. On the other hand, I knocked 14 minutes off my PR for this distance. I'm going to try not to dwell on this either way. Things are moving in the right direction, and that's all that matters right now.

After the race I walked for @ 400 yards, and saw a group of runners standing around talking. I just said "are any of you guys Drew?" So weird that i found him and Mike like that. I mean, I had no idea what they looked like. Glad you guys had a good race. They beat me by a ton! I'll see you guys around.

going for @13 tomorrow. I'm not sore at all, but I'm going to run this one easy.

My mom loves to tell the story about how when I was 7 or so, we were learning how to measure things with a ruler. I conducted some sort of contest, whereby me and the other boys at my table measured a certain appendage to see which was the longest.

Glad I was a kid in 1986 instead of 2016. If licking a book gets a letter sent home these days, I'd probably be locked away in a school for mentally disturbed kids.

11 miles, mostly on legacy trail with boy #2 on his bike. We started out @ 4:30 from Laurel road. We headed south over Dona Bay and Roberts Bay and the US 41 bridge. Then we did a quick u turn to go along side US 41 on to the island of Venice. Once on the island, we ran on the west side of the venetian waterway park, behind venice high school. Shortly after that we came up on the Lomas family, and said a few words. He's probably going to beat me by a lot next saturday. I started worrying if we could get back to the car by dark. So we went over the circus bridge to run on the east side of Venetian waterway park. We crossed all of the bridges for hatchet creek, US 41, roberts bay, and dona bay again. Great sunset over the bays.

Even though this was 11 miles, it felt like much more. He kept losing his chain, needed a drink, had to pee, etc. All of the stopping and starting gave me a beating. I'm glad we did it, but this was work. He is excitedly making plans for next sunday. I might do a small run sunday morning, then go for 10 with him in the afternoon.

It's a pain in the left shin. Very specific location. About 2-3 inches north of the inside ankle bone. It's an injury that's been hanging atound for months. I went to the doc in February, got the xray and MRI. Doc said he didn't see anything, so i felt like a wimp, and got back to running. Getting slower and slower. So now I'm walking with a limp and swearing a lot.

I got lots of great looks. Then Johnny and I pool ran for a half hour. Then we rode bikes on trails for an hour. Pretty productive day for injured dude.

Then 2 hours later, johnny's best friend came over. He wanted to ride the trail too, so we did it again. Im not much of a cyclist. I expect this will make me sore in new places.

Big hour and a half bike ride this morning. Most of it on Legacy Trail. It felt like a pretty good workout. What I've learned about cycling: 1. Hills are more of an inconvenience to cyclists than they are to runners. You are limited in your options as far a gears, leaning, and effort to overtake them. Runners can constantly make micro-adjustments to overtake hills. 2. The urge to race strangers is really ramped up on a bike. I got passed by one dude out there. He had a tricked out bike and a goofy aerodynamic helmet. I tailed him for about a half mile on my cheapo Huffy mountain bike, before i let him go.

i plan on pool running later, after church, and my dad's 75th birthday party.

12:30 - 1/2 hour pool running. The pool is not heated. I'm glad we got up to 82 degrees today.

Race Weekend Improvements Y’all Can’t Miss

You ROCKED Savannah last year under some tough conditions. On November 5, 2016 we'll be rocking out again. Thanks to your feedback, we're making improvements to ensure this year is the best race yet!

In 2016 you can count on:

More on-course bands and entertainment - we're going all out on this one!

A new and improved Health & Fitness Expo - opening hours will be extended and there'll be special entertainment on Thursday night. We're also working on a new transportation plan to improve access to the island.

An enhanced race route to show off more of the best parts of Savannah while keeping the race flat and fast.

Perfect running weather conditions! Well, maybe we can't guarantee the weather on race morning, but we will come prepared and ensure every runner feels supported on their run.

We look forward to bringing you more details throughout the year. In the meantime, if you haven't used it for another race already, secure your spot now by using your complimentary race entry. We look forward to seeing you at the start line.

Joe, I ate way too much on Easter. I'm trying to stay in shape but yesterday was a big step backwards.

Rhett, in Feb. I started getting a sharp pain on the inside of my left shin. It didn't feel muscular, and i was convinced i had a stress fracture. I went to the doc, got the xray and the MRI. The doc called me back and said he didnt see anything. What I heard was quit being a wimp and run more/ harder.i did that for about 2-3 weeks, and then couldn't go anymore. I called the doc, and - long story shorter - he told me i could stop running for 6 weeks, or wear a boot, and stop running for 3 weeks. I took the boot. I'm back to running this saturday. Hopefully, i can still salvage a decent race in may.

5.5 miles. Hood route. 6:30 am start. Shirtless. 77 deg., 87%, 73 dp. 43:31. 7:55 pace. This was a bit tougher than I expected. I am sore in a couple of places on my right leg, which I guess is from overcompensating for a boot on my left leg for the last three weeks. It took about 3 miles to smooth out the bouncy stride. Man, I hate the hot breeze. It is like repeatedly opening a sauna door. My endless summer.

Off to football signups. Then a one hour bike ride with my boys plus one.

I have to admit it is nice to see a number in the green box, instead of an empty grey box.

We drove the course this morning. Usually, I do a three mile jog the day before a marathon. But today i thought i should just chill. It is fantastic weather. Much easier driving. Did some low-impact sight seeing. It is really a beautiful place. Craziest thing about today - I got knee deep in a really cold mountain top lake that buried a former town.

On another note, I don't think these sugarloaf folks are maximising the possibilities of this race. For example, they have a band playing at the base lodge tonight. And tjey are closed tomorrow night. Maybe it's this way because they want it this way.

Sugarloaf Marathon. I held 7:30 pace for @ 18 miles, then things got weird. Most beautiful course i have ever run. I guess Jake's buddy Merkel got on the podium for his age group. I heard his name called, but i didn't get to see the hair!

I guess I'll write more when i gethome. Cell phone connections here are iffy.

Sitting in the airport. Looking at the official results. I guess there was a timing strp at mile 16. I came through at 7:40 pace to that point. From there it says i dropped to 8:44 pace. I might be the first person in the history of this race that ran a positive spilt.

Rainy and cold at the start, but neither was unbearable. My plan was to go out at 7:30 pace until the big drop off at mile 10.5, and then see what happens. I came to that race plan, because in previous races - whatever my last 20 miler pace was, subtract a minute and you get my race pace. I expected 3:28:30. I went out at goal pace. I thought i held it pretty well. The downhill at mile 10.5 was almost scary, because of the wet streets. Also, i know the cross slope of the road caused some people troubles. I spent a lot of the race looking for flat surfaces. When i got to about mile 20, my calves were just about locked up. I was running slow. Like, breathe through my nose slow. And everyone was passing me but there was nothing i could do about it. so i finished the race.

Then we went back to the condo. Then we went looking for a moose. We never found one.

If you train on flat, without any speed, in intermittent surges, you don't do so well.

It was still a great 22nd anniversary trip. Maine is beautiful.

I'm going to get one of these things! Every day should start by bungee jumping off of a flaming fountain power plant.

5:45 pm. RINGLING BRIDGE RUN! 5.2 miles. It was tough. Super duper hot, and I'm out of shape, but I ran the whole thing. It was good getting back to some old sights, sounds, and smells, and kind of weird parking in my old job's parking lot, but I had an opportunity to do it, and I'm glad I did.

Anyhow, I got to thinking - if you are running for the school board, and you have the letter "O" somewhere in your name, are you obligated to replace that "O" with an apple on your signs? Does someone without an "O" in their name find themselves at a disadvantage to someone with an "O", when running for school board? What about the letter "L" , being replaced with a pencil? Would you vote for the apple or the pencil? I'm just saying, it's a lot to consider, when voting. And school board is kind of important. Think of the children!

i usually support the ones who incorporate stick figure students as letters.

example: "re-elect marcia young" but the "y" is replaced with http://goo.gl/2oJDml

however, if she also replaced her "o" with an apple i would think she was trying too hard and would probably consider a different candidate.

really it's a case by case basis, you know?

From Tom K on Thu, Jun 30, 2016 at 07:06:04 from 66.87.122.220

A mouthful of gnats is worse. That will make you stop and cough until you feel like your left eye will pop out. On the other hand, I probably look insane, while trying to rid myself of seemingly invisible spiderwebs. Running while rubbing myself down like I'm Pookie from New Jack City is not a good look.

As we were coming up to the finish, I asked him if we were going to race it out again. If he won, we would meet at the track next week. If I won, we would do this again next week. Thanks, Dan. I ran 227 miles in July in Florida, and lost 2 pounds. My ONLY running goal right now is to lose weight, so it's kind of frustrating. I thought i had adjusted my diet adequately. I will have to work harder in August I guess. What are you doing (besides running in the summertime, of course) to drop the pounds?

From Dan on Tue, Aug 02, 2016 at 19:38:04 from 71.72.159.140

I notice a sharp drop in weight when I exceed 70 miles in a week. Last week I was traveling, only logged 20 miles and eat at some very cool places.

That being said when I gain weight it usually is tied to my specialty coffee drinks. I almost never drink soda so if I limit my specialty coffee, and keep miles up pounds drop.

Lastly, I make a cold brewed unsweetened green tea. It's 2 liters cold water, 3 green tea bags and I slice up oranges or grapefruit or lemons and put it in the pitcher. 7 or more hours later its ready. I take 24 oz with me in my Tervis mug. It's actually a negative calorie drink. So if I have that instead of 500 calorie chai tea latte - I figure that helps.

Sorry for the lengthy answer. I just don't cut much food out because I am always hungry when running.

3. This week the boys go full pads at football practice.

4. We are expected ro get @ a foot of rain this week.

Dodging rain. I run by a church sign that is bananas. I look forward to reading the next level of crazy each day. It is largely political, seldom biblical, and basically confirms every out of stater's assumptions about Floridians it is also blindingly bright. I should start taking pictures of their stuff.

16.25 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and back. 5:15 PM start. Other than seeing the sunset over the bridges where I usually see the sunrise, there was NOTHING good about this run. I had to refill the camelbak, and I still ran out of water. I will gladly run in the morning, when possible, from now on. If I have to chose between 78 degrees with stupid high humidity / dew point and 92 degrees and slightly lower humidity / dew point, I'm taking the 78 degree run - every time.

Tommy had his jamboree in North Port this morning. Weigh in at 6:30. So, I spent the morning in the sun, had lunch at Panda Express, and then cut the grass before running. Not exactly a recipe for success. I'm going to try to get a run in before Johnny's jamboree tomorrow.

So I started noticing that Runners world started using thiss expression - Rungry a couple of months ago. It means you finished your run, and then you want ro eat everything in the house. At first I thought it was cute, and then after a while, the word started showing up in every other article and add, and it felt forced. Kind of like the radio used to be with the band Incubus. Someone decided somewhere that we are all going to like this band, even if they have to play their songs every five minutes. To this day, I have never met an Incubus fan, and I have never heard a runner say "Rungry."

5.5 miles. Hood route. 6am start. Run started in the rain. I took yesterday off because my right quad felt not good. I don't think I've ever been injured there before.

Anyhow, I knew my mileage was going to take a hit this week, because... This Saturday is my parents' 50th Anniversary! 50 years! What do you talk about after 50 years? You would think you've already said everything! SOOOO, Big party. Aunts and uncles and cousins coming in from out of state! Pandemonium! Well, between work and football and party coordination stuff, I knew this week was going to be a let down on mileage, but fantastic otherwise.

16.25 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and back. Really smooth run. Last mile in 7:27. Red skies over Roberts Bay this morning. I got new shoes (Nike) last night. I have been running in very cheap Asics since the Sports Authority Going out of Business sale. So, about @ 3 miles in, I'm thinking "Wow this is going realy well." and immediately after, "How long have I been running in flat shoes?, and How much damage have I done to myself in that time?" And then the miles clicked off...

In non-running, proud dad news- Boy # 2 recovered a fumble at last Saturday's home football game, attended by a bunch of family in town for my parents' anniversary party. That was a pretty cool moment. This weekend in Imokkalee (sp), He recovered another fumble on the opponent's 6 yard line. His team scored the only touchdown of the game on the next play. I asked him why he didn't pick up the ball and walk into the end zone and score himself. He said "It's not my job to score touchdowns. That's somebody else's job" Um, okay. But I think Edgerrin James (pride of Imokkalee) would disagree.

In other news, some friends of ours are out of town for 5 days, so we have inherited 2 additional sons until tuesday. 4 boys is like 2 boys, only louder. These guys play soccer. Everyone has a game this morning, and no one is on the same team.

My finish time at Savannah was right about where I thought it would be. As I found out last year, this race is a half marathon with a few people running the full. As scenic as the first half is, the second half is interstate overpass, with a brief stop at Savannah State University. As promised by the race officials, there were more bands than last year. I heard more Skynard in my race than any man should be forced to bear. Sure, you could hear covers of Black Crows and Georgia Satellites, and. of course, OutKast playing. But Skynard ruled the day.

Early on in the race, I noticed an older woman yeling "Don't Stop!" at people at water stations. First, let me say that I give her all of the credit in the world for running 7:15 pace for the half. Really solid. After a couple of water stations, I started thinking "Is this her thing? You know, sign up for races to yell at people?" Then she yelled at me. I yelled back "I didn't stop." She yelled again "You dang near stopped!" I said I barely slowed down. She was really not going to let this go. This goofy interchange got my mind off of running for a bit. Our pack for the first half included the eventual overall women's #2 and #3 for the marathon. Also, There was a woman with one leg doing the hand crank cart, that would pass us on the downhills, and we would pass on the uphills (not that there are many hills to speak of). She was near me for @ 20 miles of this race. Anyway, at the very next waterstop after fast crabby old lady yelled at me, hand crank woman had to lock up her brakes behind the crabby lady. I didn't need to say anything. The moment was delicious.

Last year, we stayed next door to 2 women that were running the half. The husband of one of those women was in a bluegrass band that was playing on the portion of the course that i was cut off from last year, so i never saw him. He was playing in the same spot! As i passed by him this year, I pointed at him and yelled, and he yelled back.

When we decided tht my family wasn't going with me to this race, there was a while there that i had planned on going solo. My mother in Law said she wanted to go, and man, I'm glad she went. There was about a half hour of just me being dumb after the race, and it was really good to have someone that likes me at the finish. I needed someone to tell me to put the banana down, so that i could open the water bottle. Or to put the water bottle down, to peel the banana! Seriously. The post race headliner was "The Old Crow Medicine Show." I am not a country or bluegrass fan, but they were amazing! what a show! We toured Fort Pulaski on Friday, and it was crazy to see the fort last year before the hurricane and this year after.

I wonder if I would have a better opinion of this race if I had run it only once. Because this year was really good.

I don't know what race is next for me, and I don't think I'm going to decide until I get back from arizona.

Thanks to all of my friends here for the suport.

And thanks to Sasha for putting this blog together.

Got up early to watch the sunrise over the GC with the family. It wasn't as cool as the sunset the night before, due to some cloud cover, but still really awesome. We watched at the overlook with the "duck on a rock". Then we drove south through flagstaff, and saw the snow cap peak of snowbowl. Continued south to Sedona, and had lunch. So many people have told me to visit Sedona, that we had to, at least, stop by. It was amazing, and i would someday like to spend more time there. Then we continued south to Phoenix, and somewhere along this drive spouse and I got a cold. The altitude change in the plane ride was awful. Landed in Tampa, listened to my Gators lose on the radio on the ride home. What an amazing week. I wouldn't have traded any of the experience for running. I am kind of bummed that I can't get rolling with running right away because of the cold.

Less than 4.5 miles/day for the next 2 weeks gets you over 2000 miles. I think you can do it. Sometimes slow and steady is better than fast. Your marathon goals are ambitious, but sometimes running too many too often knocks the tar out of us and our bodies demand more time to recover.
