Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 17, and 18.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

3.5 miles. hood route. Back to the ankle brace and heel lifts. 10 am start. Sweated out yesterday's really really bad diet, including, but not limited to; scrambled eggs with ham and cheese, hoppin john, corned beef, cabbage, olives, sweet pickles, summer sausage with cheese, salted peanuts, all types of chip, and an obscene amount of ranch dressing.

Basically, I ran out "the Blerch" this morning.

5 pm. 1.5 miles. I met up with Brian, as he was doing his track stuff. I ran part of his cool down with him.

10.2 miles. Legacy Trail with the boys on bikes. 9:15 am start. 81 deg. 74% hum. 72 d.p.

Then I ran around the block (0.42 miles) with Boy #2, because I promised Matt S. I would break 40 miles this week.

Then we went swimming.

I believe there is a window of opportunity that is very small to do this with my boys. The Legacy Trail is pretty crowded. And young boys have all of the confidence that they are in control, and will not endanger themselves or others. But as a parent, it is a little nerve-racking. So I am usually barking out instructions, etc., as I go. As soon as I am comfortable with their abilities, it seems they are too fast for me, and are only going slow to be nice to me. So, on the way back today, I gave them a little more slack than before, and had them wait for me at key locations. Since we seem to be incapable of completing this trip without a wreck, Boy #2 had a solo crash @ 1/4 mile from the end. You know, just because. He didn't get too beat up from it. A nice man showed up right after he crashed, and asked him "Where are your parents?" He said "He's way back there. The one running. The ONLY one running!" The guy waited until I got there. I didn't even stop. I ran right by everyone. The boys hopped on ther bikes and finished. I don't know the point of all of that, I just thought it was interesting.

From flatlander on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 06:55:03 from 76.31.29.220

I think how you felt is a better indicator. A lot of times the places like Weather Channel extrapolate temperatures and other data from a distant location.

Here is how Burt told me to post pictures, once it is on your computer: Open an account in Photobucket or a similar web site. Then click "upload" and move your photo to that site. Then you can right-click on the photo to get a URL that can be copied. Then when you are writing your blog entry there is an icon at the top that looks like landscape. If you click on it a window will open and you copy the URL over. Then the photo shows up at the location of your cursor. Kind of a pain, not sure why it can't just be dragged in from the computer -- maybe this way he keeps people from posting too many pictures and eating up bandwidth.

I wanted to start easing back into this stuff, and I think this workout served its purpose. I'll add more reps / distance next week. When I got to the track, there were 2 guys running the wrong way. One of them was going very fast. I never saw that guy before. They were there for my warm up laps. Since I didn't want a head on crash, I went the wrong way, too.

7.5 miles. Hood Route. 6 am start. 63 deg. 1:04:16. 8:34 pace. I was about 5 miles into my run, when a car stalled across the street from me. I went across Albee Farm Road, and pushed the woman’s car @ 25 yards onto a side street. I have been running the same route for  4 years and 11 months, and have never had a car stall next to me. It is a sign.

Also, in "ridiculous song stuck in my head" news, I recently found out that Peter Gabriel has described "Shock the Monkey" as "a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's basic instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy. I have had that stupid song stuck in my head for nearly a week, and I STILL DON’T GET IT!

16.25 miles. Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and back. 48 deg. 5:45 am start. Barely beat the 9 minute man. I haven't run this far in one shot, since September. I'm pretty unhappy about the pace, but with a month to go to race day, I've got to start building it up somewhere.

In my humble opinion, these were perfect running conditions. Not cold enough for layers, not hot enough for sweat to drip, light but not annoying breeze, fantastic sunrise over the bays - Perfect. I just wish I had my act together a little bit more.

Then to soccer. Boy #2's team won 4-3. Yeah, he scored the game-winner. There will be no living with that boy after this. I had to widen the door frame to get his head in the house.

I am more concerned about how bad I fell off between the 2 1600's. That's not consistent enough. I know I'm still coming back from an injury, but I'd like to think I could do better than that. Maybe next week.

3.5 miles. Hood Route. 6 am start. 67 deg. Since Derunzo is getting a foot of snow today, I decided to run this shirtless. Joke's on me. It started pouring at halfway. Spouse was kind enough to leave a towel on the porch for me.

Before this weekend, I have never seen a coyote while running. People have warned me about them, and I kind of laughed it off. But I was within 10' of one on Saturday, and @ 30 yards from one today. I'm starting to get a bit creeped out. Before I saw the one this morning, I could hear a big pack singing. Or, maybe it was 3 of them. Who knows? And who knows how far away they were? It's hard to tell.

PM: 4.6 miles. Ringling Bridge. 33:21. 7:15 pace. Very windy. White caps on the bay.

I was running one morning last year and two coyotes and myself converged at the same point. When they saw me, they did a quick u-turn and took off. Cool stuff as long as they aren't rabid and going for the jugular :)

From Matt Schreiber on Mon, Jan 26, 2015 at 12:19:26 from 66.17.107.219

I haven't run into a coyote yet. The Fox I saw was small and cute, but I think a coyote would make me crap myself. I know they're not real big, but I don't like them. We haven't had top many mountain lion sightings the last couple years here either..

From SlowJoe on Mon, Jan 26, 2015 at 13:22:59 from 12.182.148.249

We have some coyotes in the neighborhood that people love to freak out about, but they have always seemed pretty skittish to me.

6:15 pm. At track. Goal was repeat miles - slower pace (6:20ish), but more consistent than what I have been doing. 1.5 up + strides. Miles were 6:18, 6:17, 6:24, and 6:20. 4 minutes rest between. 1 down. First lap of the first mile, and last lap of the last mile were 1:30. (Usually, I go way too fast on the first lap.) This was not a killer workout, but I think it is a pretty good bench mark. I might change my mind about that tomorrow.

5.5 miles. Hood route. 5:45 am start. Slow. 45 deg., 69% hum., 40 d.p. A licky boom boom down.

Friday off. 12.9 (hopefully snappy pace) miles Saturday (I am substitute coach for Boy #2's soccer game, so I can't go longer.). Then, I don't know what for Sunday. Sunday is 3 weeks until race day.

Also, I was thinking about SlowJoe being upset with "bonkathon" at his last marathon. And I thought that I had really never looked at my half splits in a race to break things down. So after some research, I got this:

1st half     2nd half    FINISH   split

U. of Okobji  1:38:39     1:41:02     3:19:41   + 2:23'

Boston           1:30:44     1:43:22     3:14:06    +12:38'

Louisiana      1:31:40     1:40:46      3:12:26    + 9:06'

and then this little gem:

MCM           1:49:19      2:28:59      4:18:18    + 39:40'

Don't ask me about that race, like ever.

I'll bet that 3:00:10 looks pretty good right now, Joe!

From Tom K on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 10:35:29 from 73.27.178.76

IJR, I wonder what a negative split feels like!

Flat, DUDE! WHAT DID I SAY?! Just kidding. I still cringe when I think of all the stuff that went wrong in that race. Long story short - I got cocky before the race, then ended up running and crying. Having to eat my words was not tasty. I almost gave up running, as a result.

Yasir, That's the line I'm walking right now. Mentally, I am in marathon build-up, not taper. So do I go for 16.25 slow Sunday, or 7.5, and keep it faster? Cramming miles for a race stinks, and I hope to never have this situation again, but I'm sure I will.

From I Just Run on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 10:48:26 from 67.79.11.242

I've figured out the negative split...You run really, really slow the first half and only really slow the second half!

From Matt Schreiber on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 20:40:45 from 66.17.102.175

Well put Tom. I would love to bonkathon a 3 hour marathon. :) I had an "I'm giving up on running marathon", too! It happens to the best of us.

You're looking to be in good for the race. You still doing the 10k?

From Tom K on Fri, Jan 30, 2015 at 08:28:52 from 73.27.178.76

No, that race has been cancelled. There are other races I could run, but I think I'm just going to hold out for Bama.

From flatlander on Fri, Jan 30, 2015 at 09:13:19 from 76.31.29.220

Tom, as you know, I usually do my last longish run 2 weeks out, and I'll do anything in the book 3 weeks out. But I'm a short taper kind of guy and not everyone is. They say trust your training, but my training has never given me any reason to trust it. I would rather go into a race slightly fatigued than slightly overweight and slightly out of shape. So personally I wouldn't think twice about running a metric marathon on Sunday, even at a pretty good clip if you are feeling it. Just me though.

From SlowJoe on Fri, Jan 30, 2015 at 10:43:09 from 12.182.148.249

Hey, I'm allowed to get frustrated by running 6 marathons in a row with pretty much the same time every time!

I like IJRs strategy - really really slow followed by really slow.

RE: Sunday, I think you do a long run on tired legs, then a less-long run 2 weeks out (15-17). If you weren't "cramming for the test," then 20 might be ok 2 weeks out but I think you want to put the biggest stress on the legs now, to make sure it's all cleared out by race day. One bonkathoner's opinion!

From Tom K on Sat, Jan 31, 2015 at 09:05:06 from 174.58.54.215

10.2 miles. Legacy Trail to Colonia and back. Not as quick as I was hoping for. I just didn't have it. Also, I overslept, so I had to cut the run a bit short. 49 degrees. 6:30 am start. 1:24:21. 8:16 pace.

Then Boy #2's soccer team was DESTROYED (5-0) at the game. My coaching career will be short lived, it seems. Everyone was a good sport, and played very hard until the final whistle, so I have that to hang my hat on. I knew NO ONE'S name on the team, so everyone got nick names. Nice shot, pink socks! Spent the day stewing over the fact that I didn't have it this morning. I dislike both teams in the superbowl, so I went running at the start of the 2nd quarter. I didn't watch the first quarter, either. I figured there would be no one on the roads, so the timing was perfect.

16.25 miles. Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and back. 2:10:16. 8:01 pace. 1:05:01 at the half. Perhaps the most evenly split long run I have ever done? It wasn't easy, but it was never really pushing, either. 67 degrees. Shirtless.

Much more taper than I intended! Goal time is really sketchy for me. If you asked me in November, I would have said 3:09. But then I lost almost all of December, with an Achilles problem. Then I got fat. Then I realized that this race has more hills than I originally thought. Then I lost ALL of the weight this week, when we got the flu. Then,...I have no idea anymore.

Flat course? I spent too much time over the weekend watching videos of Heartbreak Hill. Then I discovered it's only 1.5%. I know it occurs late in the race, but I ran a bridge that was 3.5% for almost double the distance on Saturday. Wasn't easy, but it didn't scar me for life either.

From Tom K on Mon, Feb 16, 2015 at 07:52:10 from 73.27.178.76

Double loop course. Kind of hilly, by my standards:

p.s. Heartbreak did not feel like 1.5%, and I kind of wish you hadn't told me that.

Then we flew to Birmingham, Flight went smooth. 20 something degrees and windy as all get out when we landed. We drove immediately to Vulcan Park. Toured the statue (largest steel statue in the world?) and the museum there. The statue is on a hill overlooking the city. You stand on metal grates @ 60' off the ground. Spouse and my Mother in Law were afraid to go out in the wind on the platform. The boys were not. Then we went to the hotel and then to the Big mall (43rd largest mall in the US - yeah! Birmingham!) Where we killed some time at the awesome Lego store.

In Birmingham. Went to Barber Motorsports Museum. 1400 vintage motorcycles and several hundred collector cars. Toured the area where they refurbish the historic bikes. On the test track out back, they were testing Porches and Mercedes Vans. The kids liked it, but it might have dragged on a bit long. MIL bought the kids a toy motorcycle an a toy car.

Then we went to a pretty impressive Bass Pro Shops. We were eating lunch inside, when it started snowing outside. This is the first time my boys have seen snow. They ran out the back door of the store to get out in the snow, accidentaly setting off the alarm system! The snow quickly turned to sleet. It made an interesting noise coming through the trees, and hitting the ground.

Then to the expo. This is the first time I have brought family to the expo. Tht might not happen again. Way too much time and money. Oh well, live and learn.

Then to visit Spouse's Great Aunt and Uncle. They live next to a creek. So the kids went exploring the creek. I can not explain the wide-eyed looks of amazement, when they held icicles. THERE IS ICE! AND IT IS JUST OUTSIDE! YOU CAN TOUCH IT! Floridians! Then the kids great-great Aunt and Uncle gave us the most Alabama dinner ever. Pulled pork, mac and cheese, baked beans, sweet tea, and golden flake potato chips.

3 miles around the hotel, before anyone got up. Still really cold and really windy. Like, stand you up wind. The weatherman predicts low 50's for race day, and rain. (Turns out he was right.)

Then we took the kids to Red Mountain for the zip line tour. MIL was not interested in hiking a mountain in high winds, so she went to her aunt and uncle's house. You have to hike for @ 20 minutes on uneven terrain to get to the base. I had some feeling that this might have an adverse effect  on my race the next day. But, I most likely, will never go back to Birmingham, so I better make this trip count. This zip line tour was the real purpose of the trip anyway, according to the boys. We got there early, and hiked further up the mountain (also not a good idea) to kill some time. The zip line tour was neat. In order to keep your momentum up on a couple of zip lines, you had to pull your knees up to your chest, like you were doing a cannonball. I had sore abs at the end of the tour. Spouse was a trooper. She was up in the trees with us, and the trees were swaying in the wind. A couple of times the boys got stuck on on the slight slope zip lines, because they didn't weigh enough, so the guide had to go out and retrieve them. We all started quoting Forest Gump, saying "And I showed her how to Dangle!" It was pretty funny.

Then boy #2 and I did the MEGA-ZIP line. You climb a tower @ 80 feet up, and you zip line really fast for longer than a football field. The dad-son combo behind us were bragging about therir previous zip line adventures. "So you're good at gravity, huh? Awesome." We got to do the MEGAZIP twice, and it was awesome. Boy #2 was satisfied that this was a successful vacation.

Then back to pick up MIL. Then we had dinner at "Nothing but Noodles." I got my pre-race Spaghetti and Meatballs. I slept pretty well the night before the race.

We got to the race @ 6:00 am. It was raining. Not a heavy downpour, but enough to make folks huddle under awnings. I lined up half way between the 7 minute pace and the 8 minute pace signs. I talked to a couple of guys that were doing the half. I was prepared for the rain with my garbage bag raincoat. Those guys were not. I may have learned some stuff over the last couple of races.

The course is a 2 lap course, with some serious hills (by floridian standards) between 4-10, and again at 17-23. The half and the full start at the same time. (Also, this race had relay racers, that ended up having a wierd impact on me. When a dude flies by you on fresh legs at mile 18, it is a bit of a kick in the gut.) When I have run races like this before, there is a proportion of @ 2/3 Half-ers, 1/3 Full runners. This race was more like 5/6 half-ers, so I knew there was a chance that I would be alone on the second loop.  So, again!, I misfired my watch at the start. This is a lesson I have not learned. Spouse says "Man, you need to get a handle on that!" I have done this enough times, that it is almost comedy. The race started at 7:03, so when I looked at my watch at mile 1, it said 7:09, which is what I thought was my pace. When 2 guys running next to me later said they were running 6:45 pace, I re-checked my watch, and realized it was set for Date / Time. So I ran the whole race blind, again. That makes 3 marathons with no watch, BTW! I felt like I was moving at a comfortable manageble pace, but as ususal, I was faster than I wanted. I rained for the first 5 miles. My socks were soaked. At @ mile 14 I knew I was in trouble, but I held on. It was almost worse knowing the hills that were coming up, but I kept on pushing, and never stopped. The worst hill is the last one at mile 9/22ish. For about 2 miles, I was trading places with this guy wearing all black. we rounded that near-hairpin corner at mile 22, he looked up the hill, and just stopped. I saw him later at the post race party (Which was great).

I have a church function to go to now, so I'm going to finish this later.

Ah, dang it! I just finished typing it and lost it!

~~Okay, if this doesn’t work, I give up.
Nutrition: usually I take a gu packet every 40 minutes, drink water on the first half, drink gatorade on the second half. Something went vurpy after the second gu, so I stopped with those altogether, and alternated Gatorade and water at the remaining stops.
This is the most spectator-friendly course I have ever run. There was an opportunity for my family to see me at several points along the race course. I saw them at the half. However, with the rain, they spent the majority of the time inside the hall where the post-race party was, watching for me on the big screen monitor. It all worked out, because they became experts in the BBQ there, and had some great advice.
This is the most Y’all yelling crowd I have ever experienced. “Y’all are looking good!” “Keep it up, Y’all!” I had to laugh after a while.
Splits: Notice the standard decline from 7’s to 8’s.
10k     00:42:46    7:01 pace
15k     01:04:54    7:23 pace
25k     01:48:27    7:20 pace
30k     02:12:09    7:39 pace
35k     02:44:48    8:04 pace
Finish 03:16:27    7:55 pace
This is what I do. Another “Well, given the circumstances..” race. It’s always something. I’m not sure I would have done much better, had I correctly started my watch, or if it were not raining. This is just where I am right now. Maybe things will line up again someday for a PR. Right now, it is all right to be looking forward to that. I got a bit spoiled early on, when the PR’s came easily.
I promised the boys we would go swimming in the hotel pool after the race, even if the heater was still broken. I made it to mid thigh. It was stupid cold, but great therapy. Don’t call family services on me, but my 2 lunatics went swimming for about a minute. It was great watching them psych themselves up to jump.
If there is a PR to be awarded here, it is to spouse. She is really nailing it with these family vacations, built around my silly hobby. It’s like I find the most generic town, and say I want to run a race there. Then she figures out all of the coolest stuff to schedule for the kids, on the days surrounding the race. Another trip where I’m left saying “Who would have thought Birmingham was so cool?” Anyhow, we went out for sushi after the race. She loves that stuff, I don’t. It was kind of her victory dinner.
Savannah is next, and I just realized how Forrest Gump-y this year is going to be for me!

Nice race Tom especially considering all that happened before the race with you health. One good training cycle staying healthy and you are going to nail that next PR.

From SlowJoe on Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 14:00:18 from 12.182.148.249

Sounds like Y'ALL had a great time, which definitely mitigates a race that might not have met expectations. And you and the family get to see all these different states, which is cool - especially for the kids.

I do think you're 1 good, consistent training cycle away from the glorious PR you're capable of...hopefully life will let you have it, but you'll tick of the 50 states either way - an enviable feat.

Adam, I just read your race report from last year. I should have read it before I ran this. It's funny - the difference between our perspective of the hills. You describe them as "manageable, and kept the course honest." I say they were "serious." That should let folks know that they can't trust my judgement of hills!

I think things are lining up, where I can get a good shot at a PR in (flat)Savannah.

From Adam RW on Sat, Feb 28, 2015 at 21:10:56 from 71.45.156.245

No worries. It is all relative. Having come from the mountains in Utah the hills in Alabama definitely seem smaller. However, I will say that running rolling hills is much tougher than a point to point down the canyons... Good luck in Savannah and have fun!

The boys are on the mend, but we're on a completely flavorless diet over here. Blandsville!

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this, but I’m fired up about it, so who cares. The other big news, is that I have accepted a new job today. I start the 23rd. For the last 3 years (before I joined the blog), I have had 2 jobs. By day, I’m a landscape architect. By night, I’m a janitor at the Venice YMCA. The night job used to be at Home Depot, unloading trucks and stocking shelves. Spouse works part time, so she can be more available for the kids. The new job will make it so I don’t need a night job anymore, and spouse can remain part time employee / full time mom. I negotiated most of the terms of the new job over the phone in the hotel hallway in Birmingham. Life’s challenges never come evenly spaced. The last couple of weeks have been nuts. Racing somewhere new, sick kids, interviews, giving present employers notice, … a huge weight has been lifted now that all of this is soon to be over.

Anyhow, this kind of change is huge, in what it means for family time! As it relates to running, I imagine I’ll have to change the title of this blog from “I Run When I Can” to something else. I used to have to shoe horn runs in between jobs, or I would have to run on crazy levels of sleep deprivation. The new job buys me 20 extra hours of “life.” I’m sure some of those hours will go to running, but it is too early to say how much.

I think I most look forward to establishing a new routine.

Sorry to dump this here, but where else am I going to say it?

16 miles with the cool kids in Sarasota. 6 am start. low 50's and breezy. The wind kind of picked up on the way back. We are in between soccer seasons at the moment, so I had a chance to go up to Sarasota this morning. This run was rough. A couple of the guys are in their Boston build up, so they set out to go 18. I told them I didn't think I was ready for 18, thought I was pulling out of the group to finish with 12, went home and used mapmyrun to figure out that I ran 16. Seriously, I may have to invest in one of those watches.

Great run (if you do not consider the effort at the end) - Start at Marina Jacks, over Ringling Bridge out to St. Armand's, to the South tip of Lido Key, over the bridge onto Longboat Key, around the Longboat Key Golf Club, back over the bridge past Mote Marine, to the end of City Island, back through St. Armand's, back over Ringling Bridge to Marina Jacks.

5.5 miles. Hood Route. Daylight savings- 6/7 am start. Finally loosened up by mile 3. Yesterday beat me up, but I may still race next weekend.

https://goteambravery.wordpress.com/ They are going to push a truck for 26.2 miles. I was originally one of the five guys pushing, but then they changed the date, and I had a conflict at church, so I had to drop out. Just as well, it works out that I start the new jerb the following day. That might have been an ugly first day! They are shooting for less than 9 hours. I think they can do it in less than 6.

I'm trying to get some press coverage of the event on ESPN "the Ocho" and in OSQ magazine.

It's a St. Patty's Day race! Why do I have to dress like one of the village people? I was just going to wear something green.

Okay, the Indian is ruled out for the head feathers, obviously. Biker dude - I ain't running in leather. Construction worker - the loaded tool belt could cause injuries. Serious injuries. That leaves Cowboy, Cop soldier.

Wait, why am I considering this?

local video made by a friend of a friend...pretty cool.

https://vimeo.com/120089144

I overslept my run this morning, and plan on hitting the bridge later.

4.6 miles. Ringling Bridge. 85 deg. Getting kind of crowded out here. Bunches of folks running the bridge before the Sarasota Half this weekend. I even saw SBVD and his pack of toadies. As I passed them, I said hi. No point in being a jerk now. The new office will be no where near the bridge that I have really enjoyed running over the last couple of years, so I am trying to get as many runs in here as possible. I figure I have about 3 more.

I am definitely NOT in racing shape for Saturday, but I'm going to give it my best shot, and see what happens. So, pretty typical race day set-up for me.

My favorite local race. The whole family made it out. 34:00. 6:50 pace. Super hot and humid, no wind. I was late to get the memo about needing a shoe chip. No one mentioned this when I got my bib super-early. I ran around like a nut to find the chip people. As soon as I had it on my shoe, the race started. Beard guy that I have seen at the track a couple of times won it. Foreign guy that I've seen/talked to at the YMCA won masters, high school kid took third, And Mike, my new worthy adversary, took 4th. My splits, as best as I can remember, were 6:15, 7:00, 7:00, 7:10, and 6:35.  Also, this is assuming they had the mile markers correct on the course. I'm glad I threw something extra at the last mile, because I think I barely held off getting chicked. I wore my work T-shirt to pick up the medal but I don't think anybody got the joke. Green eggs. Finding cool stuff on the beach with the kids, and walking the fishing pier after the race. Great morning. So, in the 4 years I've been running this race, I've finished 16th, 4th, 4th, and now, 5th. meh.

What does all of this mean? I don't know. I'm just having fun running. I'll start worrying about PR's in the fall, because the summer heat is upon me. I guess I'll start building up the miles, adapt to the new work schedule, and try to survive the summer.

Nice work Tom. Too bad it's summer down there already, but you avoided being chicked and scored in your AG so it sounds like a pretty strong result. I'm thinking you'll be able to get into a nice training groove with the new schedule and build a pretty good base going into next season.

My sister in law is racing the Sarasota

Half tomorrow. This is the 5th and last half in the series. She will get a "5" medal that is as big as a plate. I'm taking the boys (armed with cowbells) up there to cheer for her. Anyhow, I signed her up for this 8k race, 2 years ago, and she's been running ever since.

No running today. Just went and cheered on my sister in law at the Sarasota Half. I annoyed nearly everyone with my cowbells, but guess what? I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell. Being on that side of the fence is a little new to me. Anyhow, those medals are crazy big! I saw a lot of familiar faces out there, which was cool. Some of the people raced yesterday, as well. The heat and humidity were miserable this morning. I'm proud of her for finishing strong in both this race, and the series. Then we had a big seafood lunch, and went to the beach. The water is not too cold for the kids, but I can't take it. So, now I have sunburned feet. I'll run the bridge (which was part of this course) tomorrow.

My rule used to be no runs longer than 7.5 miles without water, so this is sort of new. I was thinking this morning about how much stuff I used to take running with me, and how it is nice now to put on shoes, socks, shorts, grab a key to the house, and go. The sunrise over Dona Bay was great. It reminded me of the opening scene in Raising Arizona, so I had that yodelling theme song stuck in my head. Then to Boy #2's soccer game, then swimming.

5.5 miles. Hood route. Lung butter miles. Confederate Jasmine and Orange Blossoms blooming everywhere. The run felt good, but the coughing persists.

PM: At track with Brian. Wow, is he getting fast. I got him running about 2 years ago. I never could hang with him on the short stuff, like 200's. But now, I'm not sure if I could keep up on the 400's. Anyhow, I wasn't racing him tonight. I just wanted to get together to run with someone for a bit. So I warmed up 1 mile, did a 400 in 1:16, then cool down run with Brian for 1.5 miles.

I'm excited for my friends running Boston Monday. I found this picture on the Boston Facebook page: ~~ https://www.facebook.com/TheBostonMarathon/photos/a.397542981656.170384.293299436656/10152755455296657/?type=1&theater

I hope that works. It's the start of wave 2 from last year. I'm standing behind polka dot shirt guy. I still remember being mostly deaf to the whole world at that moment, and trying to take it all in. That was a good moment. Well, besides some of the people around me smelling like vegetable soup. I hope you all cherish your Boston moment, and I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately to root you on. Have a great race.

Yeah, it was warm, but that new post work loop I was running was painfully boring. If I'm going to melt out there, I might as well be looking at something interesting. The south loop is around a long rectangular lake, where they will have rowing competitions. Along one of the long straight aways, they have meter markers for the rowers(?) to see, in 250 M increments up to 2000 M. There is a possibility of turning this into one of those "track workout that is not on a track" things. Since the park is new, the trees are young, and there is little to no relief from the sun. If you chose to, there is a variety of surfaces to run on. I ran on grass, asphalt, and I did @ 1000 M on crushed shell. Very flat. You go over  a couple of bridges with (at most) 25' climbs. This is very close to work, and I will see if I can work something out there into the weekly routine.

From Tom K on Wed, Apr 29, 2015 at 20:40:23 from 174.58.54.215

Man, I stink at defense. I could never play stopper. I can do all of the other things soccer players need to do. But taking the ball from someone is out of my abilities. I kept between them and the goal, and waited for the mistake. That was my entire defensive strategy. The sad part is, I only figured out how bad I was at defense, when I was much, much older. Back then I thought I was awesome.

Still sick. going back to the Doc tomorrow. But I want to work in some hill training to this next go around, even though this race looks to be the most flat marathon ever (unless you ran on a track). The hilliest place around here is Celery Fields. I think this will work. 0.5 up., 0.1 mile hill sprints, easy down x 4, 1 mile grass levee run, 0.5 mile back. The Celery "Mound" is 2,000 feet long, and 85 feet tall. So climbing 85 feet in a tenth of a mile is pretty steep, for Floridian standards. I look forward to doing this when I'm healthy again. Tonight was a good indication that this could fit into the schedule.

From Tom K on Sat, May 30, 2015 at 15:32:32 from 174.58.54.215

The beach was rad. My boys and one of their friends did a ton of skimming, then found some baby conchs, and some hermit crabs. We put them up at the edge of the shore break, to see who would get to the water first. The water was super clear. Excellent first Saturday of the summer.

I'm not sure what brought the back pain on, but it took me out for a bit. That Wed night run really hurt. Walking was difficult Thursday. Go figure.

The boys are entered in a promotion through their school and the Friends of The Legacy Trail, where they are to log miles on the trail this summer. This was trip #1. I asked the guy running it how many miles it was going to take to win this thing. He said they don't work it that way. As long as each kid does the minimal amount of miles, he/she will be entered in a drawing to win prizes. "Sure," I said. "You wouldn't want to reward anybody for hard work, right?"

I may have just guaranteed that my boys win nothing.

10 miles. 5:40 am start. Legacy Trail with Johnny on his bike. Started at Venice Avenue, to just south of the Circus Bridge, back north to Laurel Road, back south to Venice Avenue. We saw heat lightning, a yellow moon, a kingfisher eating a frog, a possum, some cool colors and clouds with the sunrise over the bays. Johnny thinks he saw a Gator. My favorite part: Johnny singing Weezer's Pork and Beans as we went by the lumber yard.

We're going to try the same thing tomorrow with Tommy.

5:40 am. 10 miles on the Legacy trail with Johnny on his bike. He really pushed me today. "Dad, let's race to the next bridge", etc. About 8 miles into it, he got a bug in his eye, and was out of sorts for a bit. I thought he was blowing things out of proportion until:

6:00 pm: Celery Mound. 1.5 up, (5) x 0.1 mile hill spints with jog down, 1.5 down. The gnats were everywhere. I was so coated with bugs at the end of this run, people in the parking lot were pointing at me. I had to run most of the time with my chin on my chest, in the hopes that the bill of my hat would prevent the bugs from hitting my face. I had to breath through my nose. I have a pretty full beard, and it was loaded with gnats. The good news is that all of the rain has caused some washout areas on the paths. If I wasn't running with my chin on my chest, I could have twisted something. < that's the best positive spin I can come up with.

I have complained about bugs before, but this is the new standard by which all other buggy runs will be judged.

5.5 miles. 5:40 am start. Legacy Trail with Tommy on his bike. This morning he rode with an mp3 player. He was belting out Livin' on a Prayer and More than a Feeling. It was awesome. At one point, he screamed "That's the guy that never says good morning!" Awkward! Son, you are going to have to learn to control the volume of your voice. He had to stop and take in the sunrise over Roberts Bay. It was ridicuous sky-on-fire, choirs-of-angels-singing stuff. This has been a great week for me and the boys. I will miss this later.

I am starting to revise my opinion about heat, after seeing so many people out running in Dubai. I have always thought that mid-70s dew point was pretty much the maximum for the human body, but not so sure anymore. After only one run outside in Dubai, Houston felt cool, not kidding. Not sure what the training effect is, but it caught my attention.

We saw eleventy rabbits, and one really cool owl that took off in flight as we passed. There were several gopher tortoise burrows near the airport. For some reason he decided to "Boo" loudly at Venice High. That was kind of weird. We saw the sunset over the ICW. When we got back downtown, there was a singer / guitarist playing at the gazebo, so we went over to check it out. Then I let Johnny play in the fountain. Oh yeah, the running was also good.

5:30 AM: I started running, and went about 1/4 mile. My left hip felt not so good, so I turned around and ran home. By the time I got home, it felt fine, so I turned around and ran 7.5 slow, hot and humid miles. But I did it, so whatever.

He is now up to 35.5 miles. Johnny has 39.6. The sunsets over the bay were cool, and we saw a snake. Right before we got out of the car, we heard Michael Jackson's Wanna be Starting Something. So for the whole run, it was MUMMA-SAY MUMMA-SOW MUMMA-KOOSAH! I was really beat up during this run. It was a real struggle. I timed it for funsies, and I can't beleve we did it in 78:09. We stopped 3 times to drink, and I stopped the watch then. But still, we beat the 8 minute guy? It was miserable out there.

Flew home from IL. Picked up the boys from summer camp. Then we went to the beach. The waves were too big for skimming, so we went boogie boarding. There was a red flag at the life guard stand - bad rip currents. Exceptional parent that I am, we went out anyway. We don't get 3 to 4 foot rollers here too often so you have to take advantage. Anyway, it turned out to be a mostly safe day for riding waves. There was an excellent sandbar right at the breakers, so I was standing in knee to chest deep water the whole time, and could focus on my kids. The boys got some great rides. I even rode a couple. There was a moment when Johnny and I were riding the same wave, that I am going to hang on to for a while. So after getting beat up in the gulf for over an hour and straining against the current and eating a big bowl of jambalaya, I went running.

It felt great. Against all reason, it felt smooth. I still have figured out very little about this sport.

Started today in Fruit Cove with a canoe ride down Cunningham Creek with the boys. I let them do the work for the last half hour, and I sat in the middle. They were yelling at each other and banging the oars off the boat. Then a manatee came within a foot of the canoe and surfaced several times, and just hung out there for a few minutes. My sons were immobilized and silent. They were just studying it. It was great. Then spouse drove home through the rain and we watched the women's world cup final. 6 pm: Celery mound. 1.5 up. (10) x 0.1 hill sprints, jog down. 1.5 down. Very tough running today. The second I finished with the last rep, before the cool down, a storm started rolling in. I didn't get rained on, but the sudden drop in temps, with the wind, may have saved me today. There was also a 6" deep gully from all of the rain right through the middle of the path I run. I only ate a few bugs tonight.

I still came home looking like I just got out of the pool. I saw my dad out on his walk at the end of the run, and talked with him for a bit, which was nice. His neighbor has a jackfruit tree, and is willing to give me one. They produce 4-5 fruits per year, so this is kind of a big deal. There is a lot to cover today, so let's get to it:

5:45am: 5.5 miles. Hood Route. light rain.

6 pm: Celery mound. 1.5 up. (10) x 0.1 hill sprints, jog down. 1.5 down. Light rain until Rep #4, then downpour until Rep #8, Then light rain for the cool down, then rain stopped altogether back at my car. It was awesome. Watching the rain roll in from on top of my mini-mountain was really cool.  No running tomorrow. Going for 16.25 Saturday again.

Then I went home and had a great dinner with the family. (Once again, I am so happy I no longer have the night job.) Then this happened:

https://goo.gl/photos/PZVKC7XaB3WJrJEb6

Jackfruit is the sweetest naturally occurring food I have ever eaten. It tastes like Juicy Fruit Gum. The texture is bizzare, as well. A bit stringy, a bit custard-y, a bit slimy. It is almost TOO sweet. So we made some into smoothies, and that was easier to handle. I have, like, 10 pounds of Jack Fruit now. This was a really neat experience.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
16.250.0016.25

5:45 am start - Hood route to Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and back. I knew this run was going to be bad when I left the driveway. I was still a bit sore from the hill stuff Thursday, and the temp / hum. / d.p. thing - I don't even want to know. I am starting to think that maybe I should wait until sunrise to start. The moisture seems to break up a slight bit after sunrise.

I felt like giving up at 3.75 miles, and then walked for a bit. The canals on both sides of the Legacy Trail are flooded out, which usually means bugs, but today, it meant frogs. Frogs singing at a volume similar to a space shuttle departure. Stopped again at the Roberts bay bridge. There was a huge gator hanging out under the bridge, which is wierd, because that is less than a mile to the gulf. That's salt water, not brackish. I guess all the rain changed some of that. Started raining in full sun with 2 miles to go. But by then, I was already too far wasted for it to do me any good. Then with 1.5 miles to go, some goats had got out from one of the farms I pass. They were standing in the sidewalk, bleating at me. That's unusual.

So short story long, even though the run itself was miserable, I feel very fortunate to experience the stuff I did this morning. Jack Fruit Smoothie Recovery Drink? Yes, please!

4.5 miles. Legacy Trail. Johnny on his bike. Tommy RUNNING with me for 4. At 2 miles, Tommy had to stop for a POP. Johnny and I continued to the turn around and picked him up on the way back. This is the farthest he has gone on one run, and he struggled, but finished strong. He really kicked well at the end.

It was super crowded with bikes out there today. I work really hard on my boys to pay attention, keep to the right, etc. Some of the folks on bikes said things to me like "it doesn't get any better than this..." etc., which is cool. But then 2 guys on bikes yelled at Johnny for not getting out of the way fast enough for their satisfaction. Johnny was about 100 yards ahead of me when this happened. So, to put is mildly, I'm a little upset about that.

And then I thought - If I was a snake, I'd live here, so I turned around back through the grass, and cut my warm-up short. August in Florida - How much warm up do I really need? My warm up could be to jog across a parking space and I'd be all set. I chose an altenate route for the cool down.

6 pm. I took the boys to Legacy Trail so they could ride their bikes while I ran. I wanted 10, but Johnny was done after 5.5. The cool part was Tommy singing this out for almost the whole run: https://youtu.be/-T5xWkO56GI  I sang back up, while running. I always pick up the pace when I run with the kids, and the singing run was a little extra work.

I got home, and was still fairly ticked about the days effort, so out the door again for 7.5 hood route miles. I'm not going to count this as a triple, since I didn't change clothes after the run with the boys. It was about a half hour after the run with the kids. I went out with wet socks and shorts - gross, I know. Anyhow, the run felt really really smooth. I decided early in the run that I was going to kick the last mile, because everything was so going easy. It was hard to hold back pace early on. I kept speeding up and then reminding myself about holding back. I threw the kitchen sink at the last mile and got 6:27.

3 months from race day. Today started, well, really bad. But the finish gives me some hope.

Kids' Football is my life all weekend. Spouse is out of town and it is Jamboree weekend - kind of like pre-season. Tommy has to be at the field 6:45 am for weigh in. then wait 2 hours, then a half hour scrimmage. then wait an hour, (while I'm in the concession booth), then another half hour scrimmage. In short, tomorrow is shot for running.

Then I do the whole thing all over again on Sunday with Johnny! I plan on running Sunday night when spouse gets back.

It's pretty cruel of the league to make it consume the whole weekend like that. My youngest has dance stuff that sucks up some serious time too (mostly my wife's time...whew). But my oldest has been in this great basketball league the past year that has practice and games on Saturday only, back to back, 1.5 hours total. That I can do!

16.25 miles. Hood Route to Legacy Trail to Circus Bridge and Back. 6 am start. Partially motivated by Flat's long run yesterday in the muck, partially motivated by the knowledge that next Saturday's away game is 2 hours away, I HAD to do a long run today. It was slow and awful, and I sweated out a gallon of water, but I did it. I saw antisocial board shorts guy, that I usually see running in the wrong direction at the track, and, as expected, he would not recognize my existence. Meh, it made me laugh. Great sunrise and the bay waters look like root beer right now because of all of the rains putting tannins in the water. Anyhow, I had this stuck in my head, which worked out well: https://youtu.be/XDHu53iBtg0

I don't think this is a direct result of running the track, although I knew it was enough of a problem to cut my cool down run short. I hope to do a short run tomorrow to test things out again. From Tom K on Fri, Sep 04, 2015 at 19:49:19 from 174.58.54.215

I just read WAY too much of your blog in 2010. Great job on handling the pity-cheers in the satellite MCM you were unwittingly running, BTW.

It does sound similar. Mine feels like someone hit me at the back of the lowest part of my heel with a stick. We do have that push-off pain thing in common, for sure. Your description of it feeling like a bruise is spot on. I am discouraged that this affected you for about a month, and hope I can bounce back sooner. Although, other than not running for 2 days, I haven't been doing anything to fix it.

If I stretch my right calf, like I am about to go for a big run, I can walk without a limp. I do this when I get up from my desk at work. The last thing I need is to provide ammo to one of those people that thrive on telling runners that their legs/feet/hips aren't going to be worth a flip, if they keep doing what they love. So I never let them see me limp. Ahhh, I'm just angry at my situation, not the haters.

Thanks for making me read that, Joe. It's nice to know that this will end eventually.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Sep 05, 2015 at 04:28:38 from 45.18.50.53

Oh yeah - the MCM-Iraq...brings back memories!

I hate the haters at the office. 250-lb guy: "See, that's why I don't run - it's not good for you."

Hopefully yours won't require that much time off. I looked back and I now remember the meloxicam being a wonder drug. That was my first marathon buildup and I was getting hurt left and right. I think I am a little less cautious with things now and might've returned to running sooner, but the extent of every injury is different...

Both boys won their football games. Tommy's game went to overtime. I didn't know that was possible at pop warner football. I did the chains for 1st down again at johnny's game. That is a crazy long time to stand in the sun. I am totally fried. The actual overall pace from this morning was 8:56. Take that, 9 minute man!

7.5 miles. Hood Route. 6 pm start. Slow and steady. Pretty surprising considering:

We left the house this morning at 6 for away games in Naples. That's over an hour and a half away. Naples plays their games on artificial turf. On dark green artificial turf, with some black highlights. In Florida. The reflecting heat of artificial turf is amazing. Johnny's game started just after 10. They didn't have enough volunteers for the chain gang, so I did it. 3 kids on Johnny's team threw up during the game from the heat. They also couldn't get enough guys to do the chains in Tommy's game, so I did it again. It's the home team's responsibility, and it's kind of annoying, but whatever. I've got the best seat in the house. On the other hand, I was baking in the sun on the sidelines from 10 am - 1:30 pm. I have an outrageous farmer's tan from today.

On the way home we stopped at Ford's Garage Diner for lunch. I saw a jiffy burger on the menu, and had to try it. It is a half pound bacon chesseburger topped with peanut butter. If you ever get one of these, do not lift up the bun to look at the peanut butter! Hot peanut butter is not attractive. Just dive right in and eat it. It tastes better than you would expect.

2 hours later, just after halftime of the Gator game, I saw enough to know the Gators were finally going to lose to UT. They didn't have it. So I went for this run. The wife and kids were mad because I was running during the game, but it was a lost cause. I got back home to watch the Gators steal the game in the last 90 seconds.

It was 86 degrees, 77% humidity, and 75 dew point. My summer goes from St. Patrick's Day to Halloween.

All things considered, a pretty good run. I've got to get back on track next week, though. No more messing around.

I spent about a fourth of this run with my feet spinning beneath me like i was a scooby doo character that had just seen a g-g-ghost! Tough running this morning, but i'm glad I went.

6:30 pm. Football practice was cancelled, so i took the boys to the track. 1.5 up. Then, I had the boys line up on opposite ends of the track. The idea was they would run a 400 relay to pace me. So johnny did 200 in 45, then tommy did 200 in 45, giving me a 400 in 1:30. Then I did an easy lap, then we did it again, with tommy first. 1:30. Then easy lap. I should have kept going. This went way better than I expected.

About last week: the fever that I got on Tuesday night came and went until Friday. It was part of a stomach bug, that forced me to live in close proximity to a restroom. So I decided to run yesterday. I got a very short distance down the road, and had to turn around. I had enough. I went to the doc, got some meds, and i think I'm back on track. Between that backstory, and the slightly cooler temps this morning, stepping out was nice this morning.

Anyhow, By mile 3 i could feel the gritty-ness of my sweat. Camel back was empty by mile 12, which i refilled at mile 13, and was again empty by mile 18. I would have/ could have finished, but spouse and the kids were on their way out and yelled to me from the car. They asked me if i wanted a ride home. I figured that continuing running would do me more harm than good, so i took it.

I really wanted this run to go well, but you can't spend the morning in 85 degree full sun and then expect greatness. 2 weeks until race day. As per my S.O.P., i'm not going into this with a lot of confidence. I would have liked a short race in the last month, but footbal would not allow that. I might get anything between a PR and 4 hour finish and not be surprised.

We did the trolley tour around Savannah today. We went to the expo to get my bib. Spouse and the kids think this is the best expo ever. They walked out of there looking like they were sponsored by geico, toyota, pet chocolate milk, etc. It was kind of weird seeing the booths for the races i have run. I would stop by the Louisiana marathon booth and say "Hey, I ran that race!" Then we would kind of look at each other for a second, and then move on. And i didn't learn my lesson after that because i did the same thing at the gasparilla and charleston booths.

We had lunch at a divey cajun place on the river. Red beans and rice with sausage. Spouse had the oyster po boy. Johnny had the gumbo. All were great. Then we had dinner at Paula Deen's. I had the shrimp and grits. The walk home was borderline painful.

Race was cut short because of the conditions. I have had a great time in Savannah. I am disapointed that I can't cross Georgia off my list. There is only so long that you can argue with a state trooper at mile 19. It was stupid hot and humid. I don't blame the race diector for shutting it down. I saw my share of folks leaving the race via ambulence. Someone died out there today, It seems a bit early to turn the 3:20 crowd around, but it's not my call. I have no idea how I placed today, because they turned everyone aroud at the same time. So the leader board has me as finishing 50th, behind some folks that ran 16 miles. It doesn't matter. I survived. After the sun came at mile 14, and punched me in the face, I changed my goal to 3:30. After some heated words with the officer, my goal changed to having fun. I did. I would have could have finished, and in ugly fashion, but was not allowed. After the race, I played some two hand touch. Me and my kids vs. A local dad (that did not run) and his kids. My legs are going to be hot garbage tomorrow.

Edit: - Added 11/15/15. About the race course. Not as flat as I was promised. Louisiana was much flatter. Especially on the second half. The majority of the second half is run on interstate overpass. Which is almost as exciting as it sounds. It is a long, boring stretch out to Savannah State University, and then back again. When you get there, the kids are really enthusiastic, but it is really a long boring haul out there. The frist 5 miles is through a fairly rough neighborhood. Literaly and figuratively. There was gravel on the road in places. Some folks were very politely protesting some police violence at mile 2. I could hear no band as we passed them, and through the thick fog, and the sound only of runners breathing and footsteps, it was a freakishly somber moment for a race. In short, this would be a decent place for a half, but not great for a full marathon. At least, not like they have it set up now.

This was my first Rock and Roll event. I feel like they had some planning issues. The expo / packet pickup is on Hutchinson Island, on the other side of the river. Since I was there when the place opened on Thursday, packet pickup was a breeze for me. If you went on any time on Friday, "Zoo" is the most common expression I've heard, describing things. 18,000 half-ers. 2,000 full runners. The most lop-sided race ever.

I heard from my share of half marathoners after the race that they ran out of water. The slower runners that had no water got angry with the people ahead of them for wasting and hogging all the water. That might be some misdirected hostility. That one is on the race planners, right?

Finally, the shutting down of the race. I get it. But how this was handled was really awful. There are a lot of ways I can get into how bad this is/was, but the best explanation I can give is that at this moment, 8 days after the race, they still have me listed as finishing the race. I have sent them 4 e-mails, explaining what happened on the course. The 2 responses "Ok, But you chip did come across the finish line??? Was someone else wearing your bib?" Wait a minute, slick. Are you saying I wasn't supposed to run the 3 miles to the finish line, where my family was waiting? What was I supposed to do? Whoa, is this because you think I am trying to game you into a free race? Please, I would much rather be done with Georgia. Don't promise a free race to the redirected runners, if you don't mean it.

They need to get a freaking handle on this situation. I am telling you right now that no more than 30 people finished 26.2 miles. The last guy to make it through mile 21 was the 3:15 pacer guy. Go check the results page. Right now it shows 1,249 finishers, with an ALARMING number of BQ's, I might add.

All at once, I am saddened by the lack of honestly of my fellow runners, frustrated by the event directors for not correcting the results in a timely fashion, and anxious to get to another race, so I can wipe this non-race from my memory. Whenever I cross Georgia off my list, I don't think it will be Savannah. And that stinks, because I really, really liked our trip there.

did you tell the officer you were from florida and you were fine? :) that is crazy that they cancelled the race! what a bummer. it sounds like the conditions were pretty miserable, though. i hope everyone who had complications is okay...and that's really sad that someone died.

i'm glad you are okay and i'm sorry you couldn't finish the race. chalk it up as a good long run and maybe you can find an alternative in the next couple of weeks? or maybe jacksonville in january? i'll be there. :)

From Derunzo on Sat, Nov 07, 2015 at 17:50:10 from 98.229.177.205

You should have given that Police officer the "double bird". It's an awesome salute that signifies much unhappiness.

Way to be a tough SOB and push as long as you were legally allowed.

From Tom K on Sat, Nov 07, 2015 at 17:59:47 from 66.87.133.137

There is no doubt i was struggling. But i also have no doubt i would have finished. The Floridian thing doesn't make me immune to the elements, but i'd like to think it makes me a little more aware of my limits. This vacation has been so great, that i can't be too upset about this, I guess. They have already sent me an e-mail to let me know that i have a free RnR race coming to me in the next year. That's the best they can do, and i'm pretty sure they are not obligated to do that.

The second guessing is in full swing over here. If i hadn't made the mid race decision at mile 14 to slow down, would i have beat the cut off? If i beat the cut off, would i be one of the dudes in the ambulance? It's twisting my melon, man!

From Tom K on Sat, Nov 07, 2015 at 18:16:17 from 66.87.132.65

D, that trooper was not messing around. When i was joined by a couple of other runners, and he felt outnumbered, things changed. A bad situation could have become much worse.

that may be the first time in my life i yelled at an officer. It may take me a couple of times before i get to bird flipping!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Nov 07, 2015 at 18:29:00 from 107.77.66.93

Noooo. Well, if you only make it to 49 states you'll have a scapegoat....Georgia. Glad it was a fun trip though.

Hot marathons are definitely awful, but that does seem like a pretty conservative call by the race. Still, the free RnR is nice (and I'd say rare with this kind of thing).

Way to slog through what you could.

From Tom K on Sun, Nov 08, 2015 at 15:53:16 from 66.87.148.207

From flatlander on Mon, Nov 16, 2015 at 05:45:00 from 76.31.29.220

Sorry for your race, one of the more unusual situations I have heard about. Surprising that in the South they wouldn't be afraid of the heat -- then again maybe the R&R guys are not from the South? Boston certainly would not have cancelled. Maybe since you slowed down you can slip into another race soon and take advantage of your training cycle?

Are you serious... 4 people have died running this marathon? What were the conditions?

From SlowJoe on Mon, Nov 16, 2015 at 07:42:06 from 107.77.105.126

Appreciate the details...somehow it doesn't surprise me that Competitor is trying to weasel out of the free race promise.

At the risk of sounding callous, I think 1 death in 20k runners - many of whom probably shouldn't be taking part in whatever race they entered - is almost expected and not that unusual.

That said, early November is a bit early for a marathon down south. December to February is the sweet spot.

From Jake K on Mon, Nov 16, 2015 at 08:22:28 from 159.212.71.199

Quite an ordeal. You are totally justified in being frustrated about how Competitor is handling the situation... hopefully they'll be sensible and give you your race entry without too much more of a battle. I feel like they do a pretty decent job w/ most of their races, but when it goes bad for them, it REALLY goes bad!

11:00 am at the track. I really wanted to run today, and this is when I had the time to go. I took boy #2. He wanted to try out his new christmas shoes. 86 deg., 64% hum. (that seems low), 72 d.p. Shirtless, and now sunburned. 2 up. (12) x 100 M sprints, jog back. 0.5 down.

We met a guy out there that was running short sprints. He says he ran competatively indoors in europe last year. Johnny started asking him questions, and he was pretty cool about it. He even let Johnny run out of his starting blocks a couple of times. The guy told Johnny that he was really fast. I can't tell if this guy was being genuine, or if he was trying to get me to enroll my kid in some sort of coaching thing.

10 miles with an old friend on the legacy trail. 7 am start. Hot and humid, but great conversation. He took me and the boys to see the new star wars last night. Excellent movie. It made me realize that the problem with the prequel series of movies was the absence of humor. This flick brings back the funny. I'm no star wars expert, but that difference was obvious.

You have a good point.

5.5 milrs. Legacy trail with Johnny on his bike again. Today, we waited until after sunrise. The fog this morning was super thick. Crossing Dona Bay and Roberts Bay was really cool. He told me to "kick it up a notch" for the last mile. 6:38. Yesterday, the surf was pretty big for gulf coast standards. The life guard whistled and yelled at us, so we went to a no-life-guard beach. The boys had saucer sized eyes dropping in and riding the waves on their boogie boards. It's one of those Best Dad or Worst Father kind of things.

5:30 pm: Island Walk Mini Bridge 800's. The last time I did this, I had measured the 800s wrong. They were 57' short. Problem is now fixed. Anyhow, 81 deg., 77 % hum., 73 d.p. No breeze. None. Bonus Gravity. 2.7 up. (4) x 800 over 5  mini-bridges w/ 4 minute rest between. 3:01, 3:05, 3:02, 3:07. 2.7 down. The cool down was pretty difficult. I still go over the bridges on the warm up and cool down. They break the stride. They are inconsistently spaced, and have transitions that are arced, like a skateboard ramp. Fun stuff. To see the bridges, Google image search this: island walk bridge west villages.

Big day, lots to comment on.

-nice notch

-no one died, so they'll remember it as a "best dad" moment

-73 dp is a total rip off

-are those the famous "The Villages" from the commercials? the retirement community where all the old folks are playing shuffleboard and having a great time? I want to live there now.

THAT villages is about 3 hours north of here. And it foes look really cool.

i love the "no one died" standard. It is a solid argument. We took the day off from the beach yesterday, to go to celery mound and sled down the side on cardboard boxes. Back on schedule today. Back to the beach.

Looks awesome. Not sure I would get any running done if I lived there :)
