Well, even Secretariat lost his first race before going on to win the Triple Crown...!

I am glad I ran the race but honestly disippointed with the final results. 20 days of virtually no training and a bone spur really didn't give me a very good chance to accomplish my goal. As you can see from the chart below I ran right at 8:00 pace for 21 miles. At 21.5 miles my knee with the bone spur basiclly locked up and I had to walk for about 30 seconds. This happened 3 or 4 more times before the end of the race. My conditioning was not good enought either. Two months ago I ran 21.5 miles at a 7:47 pace and my heart rate avg. was 154 (71% of my max heart rate) (and hotter weather and a very hilly course). As you can see my heart rate avg. for this race was 165 (82% of my max. heart rate).

The weather conditions at the race were tough. Low 40's, raining, some small hail, lightning, and very windy. I was very cold throughout the race, especially my hands and feet.

My right leg is swolen from the knee down...mainly my ankle and foot.

Revovery Day...

I'ts amazing what one day of recovery will do. Yesterday my feet, calves and right knee were all really sore and tired. Today I feel like I could go out and run fairly comfortably...but I'm going to wait a few more days.

Repent

·             Luke 24:47: "and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in
His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem."

·             Acts 2:38: "Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the

Recovery Day...

Everything is feeling pretty good. My knee is just a little tinder but no more swelling. My feet and ankles are just a little sore but nothing different than when I'm running my usual.

Confess

·             Matthew 10:32: "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also
confess him before My Father who is in Heaven."

·             Romans 10:9-10: "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and
believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for
with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth
he confesses, resulting in salvation."

Recovery Day...

Figured out certain things are still making my knee sore. Went and rode (roping) fairly hard last night and my knee got really tight again. Not sure if it's the pressure, angle or movement that made it hurt. Anyway it was worth it since I had a $ 1,200 win for a little Thursday night event.

Be Baptized

·             Acts 2:38: "Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit.""

·             Romans 6:4: "Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into
death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, so we too might walk in newness of life."

Sitll no run today... But I will report on my roping PR. I went to Salado to the Wildfire Team Roping Finals entering in two events, the #12 and the #11. I placed in all both the Preliminary Ropings and both Finales. In the #12 Preliminary roping I won 2nd for a total of $ 1,120. This by itself would have been a great win but to top that off the win made me eligable for a Finale entry. In the Finale I won 2nd again for another $2,010 prize. I decided to enter the #11 Preliminary and ended up winning 1st in that roping. With that win I recieved a trophy buckle (pictured below) and another $ 2,164. Again I was able to enter the Finale for this roping and again placed high in the roping, 2nd, for another incredable $ 2,430 win.  Total winnings for the day was $ 7,720. That's the biggest prize money I have ever won in a single day! Entries in the Preliminary ropings were about 140 and 150 respectfully and in the Finale ropings 50 and 60. Now for the BIG decision, these wins make me eligible for entries in World Series Team Roping Finals held in Las Vegas in December. I have never competed in a National Finals before. The entry fees are $ 2,000 each plus all the expenses to get there and back. I haven't decided if I'm going to do it yet but I am leaning toward going for it! Prizes there will be 10 times the amounts here but the compitition should not be any tougher. Well...that's my Roping Report for the weekend, I don't expect to top this one for a while....!

Here is the trophy buckle I was given for the #11 Preliminary win...!

Callie is home from college...well for a week anyway. Next week she heads off on a one week mission trip then back home for another week then back out for another 10 weeks of mission work. Today (Sunday) she competed in a Sprint Triathlon at the Ski Ranch near our home. It was an all ladies meet with about 300 entries. Callie did pretty good for the little amount of training she has been able to do. She actually took 2nd in her age catagory. I'm proud of her... :-) There were women of all ages competing in the triathlon, the oldest was 71 years young. I was standing near the 71 year old and another lady very near her age, it was funny because the these two ladies truned to me and one said, "what do you think of women our age competing in an event like this?" ... I think they caught me stareing at them in amazment as to how fit and good they looked. All I could say was "I think it's amazing and wonderful!" I had no idea there were so many people who were involved in triathlons and running until reciently.

For the run...Callie and I went out for a 2 miler at about 10:00 pm for her to loosen up and for me to see how my legs felt. She was sore and my knee is still bothering me (plus the arch of my left foot). My plan is to run fairly short runs this week with Callie while she's back and also see if my knee and foot will stop bothering me.

Evening Run:

Went out for another 2 miles at 10:30 pm...Forgot to bring my watch to work to download the chart. 5 total....whooo..Hooo getting up there. Funny thing is my knee didn't hurt at all on this run. Maybe the bone spur is floating around and when it gets in the wrong position...that's when it hurts?

Morning Run:

Ran again this morning. 3 miles with a rest in between each. Ran 1 by myself and then two more with Callie. She was really sore from the Triathlon yesterday. I felt about the same with the knee and the foot. I'll keep trying this week to see how things go.

Ran again this morning, 3 total, 1 by myself and 2 with Callie. My knee is only slightly irritated this morning. Took a rest between each mile. I forgot to bring my watch to work to download the chart...I'll do that later but basiclly I ran 1 fairly easy, 1 medium and 1 faster mile.

Biking

Evening Exercise: Went over to the DARK side this evening... The bikers from work (actually Callie) talked me into biking with them this evening. Borrowed a bike, we rode 15.33 miles and averaged right at 15 mph, my average heart rate was 139 bpm. They all came out to my house and we rode my running roads. I think the liked the hills :-) The elevation change is about 800 feet.

Running:

I ran by myself this morning. After the first 1/2 mile I decided to run a 5K just to see what it felt like (it was hot and humid and some wind) but I felt pretty good. Based on this I believe I can break the 20:00 mark on a 5K. After that I took a short break and then ran 3 easy miles. Its funny my knee didn't really bother me at all on the first fast 3.1 miles but on the easy miles the further I went the more it hurt. Can't really figure out the rhyme or reason for the intermittent pain...maybe the bone spur is floating around and when it gets in a certain position it hurts more...?

NEW ENTRY:

Well, below I stated this was a "Recovery Day" but in the evening I went out to run a little extra and decided to run my Loop (6.65 miles). Everything was feeling good so I went ahead and pushed it a little trying to increase my speed each mile. I did pretty well except on one section (mile 4) where the hill slowed me down a little. All in all the run was good, my knee didin't hurt at all! (but since I'm entering this after my Friday run I can tell you now it hurt again on Friday) Here's the Chart for the Friday evening run:

ORIGINAL ENTRY:

Recover Day ... Since I went over to the DARK side yesterday (see yesterday's new entry for biking details) I decided to take it easy this morning. I tried to run at a 140 bpm heart rate which is 70% of my max heart rate so it should be a recover level. It was raining this morning, if you could call it that. I think the ran actually evaporated before it hit the ground but it was enough to get me soaked. I may run a few more miles this evening too.

My legs were a little stiff and tired this morning from the evening run. I've realized that although splitting my runs into a morning and an evening run seems easier, the recovery time is not long enough to allow my legs to get back to a normal state. I'm not saying this is bad, just an observation. I still want to see how this works over a longer period of time. I ran 5 miles trying to keep my HR at 140. As usual it took a mile just to get my heart rate to 140 so the first mile is typically well below that rate unless I really run hard and I don't think that's good for the first warm-up mile. I also don't know what's up with the knee. I run hard last evening and it felt great...I run easy this morning and it hurts quite a bit. Maybe it's the way I run when I run slowly that's aggravating it...? Who knows...I'm just going to keep running until it get better or hurts so much that I can't run!

10 miles today in beautiful weather. Got to run the last time with Callie before she goes on her mission trip. Ran 6 miles with her and then continued on my own for another 4 miles. If you average it all together it averages to what I call a marathon pace for me at this time. now to decide what to run tomorrow...15 or 5...Humm....

Well, I couldn't decide if I should run 5 or 15 miles so I just went out and ran 16.15 Ha ha...

Also, I couldn't decide how fast to run so I just decided to run marathon pace for as long as it felt comfortable. Come to find out I could do it for the entire distance. I was actually trying to keep my HR below 150 as a guideline. When I finished it felt like I had just run 3/4 of a marathon...wait a minute, I guess I did. Actually, I flet pretty good throughout the run except for at mile 10 my knee acted as if it were going to lock up with the sharp pains and all. I kept running and after about a half mile the sharp pain stopped. After the run, throughout the day, my knee has stayed a little sore. We'll see what it's like tomorrow.

I decided to do something different today so I went to the Gym with the intention to run a few fast miles. My legs were a little tired from yesterday so I only ran two fast miles out of 6 on the treadmill. I set it at 1% to simulate a road run. I had originally hoped to run 3 fast miles. As usual my knee hurt worse on the slow miles.

I realized that I now need some new shoes. I blew part of the sole off of my Mizuno Wave Riders. The roads I run on around my house are "chipped rock" so it is very rough and I'm sure hard on the soles. I probably don't help the wear on my shoes running like a three legged wildebeest.

1 Samuel 7:11-13

11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.  12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.†13 So the Philistines were subdued and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines.

This was supposed to be an easy long(er) day but for some reason it was hard/painful. First, when I run at 8:45 to 9:00 pace, I feel "clunky". There doesn't seem to be a rythem to my running. Second, I seemed to be stiff, my knee was tight, my left ankle had some weird needle like pains on the top of my foot and the ball of my left foot was sore.....Ahhhhhh....!

Okay...now I feel better. I decided to do a long (well long for me) low heart rate run keeping my HR at 140. Due to the hills on this run it was difficult since some of the hills are fairly long and others are steep. Overall I did pretty good. The weather was GREAT and the moon was full so the early part of the run was pretty cool....!

JG sent me information on a marathon in Logan UT that is right before the BQ regestration date. It looks like a great chance for me to qualify for Boston so I'm thinking very serious about going to it. If anyone know about it or has any suggestions I'm all ears (wait a minute, maybe that's why I can't run very fast...my ears catch too much wind :( )

No run today. I didn't get home until 12:00 pm so I decided to sleep in a little. Besides that my left foot is acting up with a sorness on the top (there's actually a bruise). The ball of my foot is a little swolen and the middle toe feels like I sprained it. I need to go and get some new shoes too, the sole on one of my Mizunos is pealing up :-(

Hopefully I will be back running tomorrow.

In a hurry today so it's a short report. I decided to take it easy another day and let my foot heal a little more (it's much better). Went to the gym and ran the elipitical for 2 miles and lifted weights (uppper body and legs). All is good.....!

No run today....I still have something weird going on with my foot. There seems to be a slight throbbing pain that comes and goes and actually seems to move around in my foot. It almost feels like a cramp at some times. The ball if my foot is still a little puffy feeling.... It's all unusual....don't really know how to explain it completly. I could probably run by have decided to give it a little rest.

No run again today but my foot and ankle are both better.

Callie came back from her mission trip to Belize. It was a great experience from her. She had a lot of stories to tell. There was a group of 72 people who went down to help in one of the small viliges in the jungle area. The team took medical supplies, toys and activities and most important the word of God to the Belize people. Callie said they were very receptive and the blessings were poured back on the team even more than they were able to give to the native people. There is a Blog about their trip. I will get the link and post it if you are interested in reading a few details about the trip.

Callie and I ran another 2 miles at 10:00 pm. Avg pace 8:48. Ran with new shoes. I think they helped.

Callie and I ran 2 miles this morning. 7:48 & 7:42 pace. My foot and ankle seemed okay. We may run another 2 miles this evening. Callie hasn't run in a week so she was winded a little after the run. She is competing in another mini-triathlon next Monday...good thing it's not a full triathlon :-)

3 easy miles with Callie.

Yesterday I went to Core Running Co. and bought new shoes. After trying on about 4 or 5 pair I picked the ones that felt the best (I'm really picky about all my shoes). I also bought some inserts for my high arches. I described the problem I was having to the shoe expert and he believes several things are contributing to my problems.

My Mizunos'  are worn out to the point the heal had dropped and was allowing the shoe to rub on the ankle ball. I believe the shoes were too narrow causing my toes to be pressed together. I shoed him my feet (which have blood blisters on the ends of my toes) and he said this shows that I use my toes like claws when I run putting a lot of pressure on those toes and the tendons that connect to these toes. Those tendons are the ones that are sore on the bottom of my foot and along the top of my foot. (I'm not sure I have all of this exactly right but it sounded sensible when he was describing it). Anyway new shoes, inserts and a little more light running should help me recover soon. On another note, my right knee is much better but still has a little twinge but nothing serious. I think only high milage will tell me how it really is.

Wow...Losts of talk and not much running... :-)

Cooler weather + No Knee Pain + Fully Rested - Slightly Sore Foot = Beating My Best Loop Time Ever (7:10 Pace for 6.65 Miles)

My heart rate really got up there but I made it through the run. We'll see what I feel like tomorrow. I ran the loop backwards so mile 5 is the tough one since it's almost all up hill. Callie sat out this morning since she is going on a long bike ride this evening. Callie and Sarah (my wife) went and bought Sarah a road bike yesterday. She wants to start biking and maybe bike with me while I run. She broke her hip (very serious break) a little over a year ago in a skiing accident. The doctors put some major rods, pins, etc. in her femor so running is really not an option for her. I'm afraid I'm going to get sucked into the biking world.....Help My Running Friends...!!! 10 miles keeping my heart rate at 140 bpm. Aveage Pace was 8:55. It takes a while for my heart to start pumping so the first mile was about 8:00 and most of the other miles a little over 9:00. Callie decided to do her bike then run so we didn't run together. She has another Triathlon on Monday.

I think I may be completly over my knee problem. Now I've got to get my ankles and feet feeling better.

Okay...Maybe now I can write a Run Report. I'm not sure what I said or did to get sensored but I haven't been able to write any comments for the past few days (well, not by the conventional method).

This long weekend was Loooong! Callie competed at the CenTexTri in Austin today (Monday). She did pretty good considering the lack of quality or quantity of training she has been able to do for the last few weeks. She basiclly competed in comfort mode and ended up 7th out of 23 in her age group. I think there were about 3,000 competing in the event. Kirby (my son) had a basketball game this evening (and won :-).

I had to sandwich my run between these two events at 3:00 pm. It was hot, humid and windy! I felt like I was running in Abiline! I tried to just run comfortably at a heart rate of 150 but the conditions made it pretty uncomfortable. It was hard to keep my heart rate at 150 even when I slowed way down. I don't know if this kind of torture(workout) helps but when you don't have a choice, you do what you have to do. I think Mr. Treadmill is going to get a lot of use this summer!

Hey Flat, I decided to put a long one in today to see if I would get sensored again :-) I even put it in bold!

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’â€

Well, I wanted to write "Okay...I'm Back" today but I really can't. My milage, speed, effort was all good but after I finished my left foot was really sore and tired. I don't believe it's anything other than not being used to running the miles. Actually it's already better as I write this. The weather seemed really good when I started today, it was 71 degrees and felt great. By the end of the run it had jumped to 75 and seemed really humid. One problem I had today was that I sweated so much my shoes felt full of water by the end of the run. A couple of places on my feet were starting to get blisters because of the all the sweat. I wrung out my soxes when I finished and it was as if they had been dunked in water. Overall I'm pleased with the run but how I recovery will really be the measure of where I am right now.

"For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged." If you are a true Christian, then you belong to God. You are God's child. If you refuse to judge and improve yourself as a child of God, then God will take it upon Himself to judge you. Many of the troubles that we face in life are nothing more than God's way of judging us since we often neglect to judge ourselves.
