This past year was really a struggle for me.  I only ran 4 races and I never really felt like I was in very good shape.  I'm really hoping to bounce back in 2011 and have a better year.  Here are a few goals

1. Run more miles.  The goal is 2500.

2. Race more.  The goal is to run at least 1 race per month.

3. Lose weight. The goal is to be at 145 for Utah Valley and 140 for St. George.

Great goals! I'm planning to run UV this year, too. Not sure what my weight is, but I know I need to lose some pounds. Maybe 5-10. Thanks for recommending those sunglasses to Laurel. They're nice!

I've ran this 2 mile route quite a bit faster when I'm in shape, but it was still nice to see where I'm at as I get started with a new year of training.

Yeah Guys

Basketball season is in full effect. I really struggle getting out in the mornings to run especially in the winter, so basketball is the next best thing for me.

However, if you want to become a better runner, then you should probably run. Anyway, I think that is how it works.

I'm feeling pretty good and more motivated than I was last year, but that could all change by tomorrow.

I'm hoping to run the 5K next weekend. I don't have the endurance yet for a half.

I did a tempo run yesterday and basically another one today.  Anytime I run with Clyde, Logan, Dave, Aaron and Steve I have to work just to stay with them on their easy pace.  I did 6 with them and then slowed down and finished the last 4 with Bill and Mike.

I averaged 7:28 for the entire run, but the first 6 were probably closer to 7:00 or even sub 7 pace.

Today was the longest run I've done since the marathon, and I actually felt pretty good, just got to keep working at it and slowly I will get back into shape.

Decided since I didn't race much last year (only 4 races total, two marathons, lake to lake relay, and a 5K) I better try to get out and race more this year, even if I'm not in racing shape.

I figured the half would be a little too far, so I settled on the 5K.

In 2009 I ran 18:09 and in 2008 18:48.  I didn't really know what to expect going in, so I didn't really have any time goals.

1-5:47 Ran the first mile or so with Mike Schramm, we were in 3rd and 4th, two younger kids were about 10 seconds ahead

2-6:12 Mike put a good gap on me here, but I was ok with that.

3-6:10 I was happy with my effort the last mile, considering how much I just wanted to stop.

.1- 28 ?

Overall 18:28 (5:57 average)  Nothing too great to report about this race, but at least this gives me a good starting point and hopefully I can get out and train and race more in 2011.

Have you ran SLC marathon before? Is it a good one? I'm not too sure about the course-it seems interesting but I just don't know. Depending on where we are living, I might consider doing the Utah Valley marathon instead-I have done a few races down the canyon and it would be nice to try something different-although I love Provo canyon so it would be fun to run in something familiar. Just thinking out loud.

Starting my 18 week training cycle for Utah Valley today.  I'm actually a lot more excited this year, compared to where I was last year.  I'm really hoping I can get back into decent shape this year.

Pretty decent workout this afternoon.  I did a 2 mile warm-up then started a 4 mile tempo run over on 400 South.  I did a loop out past the school.

1-6:09

2-6:27- a little uphill

3-6:02- starting to hurt and wanting to be done

4-6:14

Overall 24:55 with a 6:13 average.

Good run with the club tonight.  Started out at a comfortable pace with Dave, Clyde, Steve, Bill and Mike.  We had an encounter with a biker punk, fortunately the dude kept biking after he yelled at us, because if dude would have stopped we would of had one less biker in St. George and our running club would be running laps around the prison yard.

Basketball this morning and feeling sick now.

Pretty good workout this afternoon did 4 x 1000m on the cow field loop

2 mile warm-up

1- 3:33- just wanted to ease into the workout

2-3:31- changed the watch to metric to remeasure where I exactly I needed to stop, because the first one felt long, which is was by just a little bit.

3-3:27- this one felt the best

4-3:27- struggled but managed to get through it.

Crazy to think that Logan and Dave have been running 1000's on the track about 20 seconds faster than what I did today.  I just have a long way to go, but I was pleased with this workout as a starting point for the year.  I haven't 1000's since before the St. George Marathon.

2 mile cool down.

A pretty good workout this afternoon.  Sunny drove me out to Anderson Junction and then I did a 2 mile warm-up and then got into 4 x 1 mile repeats with 3 min recovery back to La Verkin.  The times are a little faster, because a lot of the miles were downhill, but still a good workout for the legs.

1-5:30

2-5:35 I threw up a little after this one.

3-5:47 a little uphill coming out of Toquerville

This afternoon I did 3x Pah Tempe Hill Repeats with 3:30 rest.  The schedule called for 4, but I only managed 3, which I guess is ok, considering I'm still fighting off this cold, legs still dead from last week's mile repeats and this is the first hill workout of the year, ok enough excuses.

Did 2 mile warm-up

1-2:11 Actually this is a pretty fast time for me, 2:06 is my all time PR if I remember

2-2:12 Another good repeat, but threw up after and getting quite the headache which is strange

Well, another win for the St. George Running Center.  This was the third year we've ran and won this relay, so that was cool.  I was a little concerned going in because I have been sick the last two to three weeks and haven't been training very well.

This year I did legs 3 and 7

Leg 3- 5.68 miles 34:47 (6:07 average)

1-5:37 Some excitement here as we were in 3rd place, so I had to try to make up some ground

2-5:51 I catch the guy that is in second and gap him pretty fast

3-6:04 this section is on the bike path and has a nice little hill

4-5:57 decent mile, but starting to hurt

5-6:32 I'm really starting to struggle here, doesn't help having to run up a hill now

.68- 4:42- Not the best effort here, Dave was nice and came and helped me to the exchange.

Leg 7- 4.44 miles 29:04 (6:33 average)

Well by this time we had a pretty good lead on the other teams, so I just tried to keep things nice and easy.  I was a little disappointed my ipod quit working, so I ran this leg just listening to the voices in my head, which can be scary

1-6:27

2-6:31

3-6:40 Actually thought I was going faster than the first two miles, but I guess I wasn't

4-6:31

.44- 2:53

Overall happy with the effort, even though I've been coughing ever since I stopped running.  Hoping maybe the extra effort today will work some of this sickness out of the body.  Always fun to run and hang with Bill, Clyde, Dave, and Steve.  It was also cool being able to see Mike, Bruce, and James at all the different exchanges.

What started out as a really good run, turned very bad around mile 10.  I didn't make it over to run with the club, so I decided I would drive my truck up to Springdale and then run home which would be a good 19 mile run.  The only problem is I forgot how far 19 miles is. I started off feeling really good and ran the first 10 miles just under 7:00 pace.  I started really struggling the next two miles and barely made it to Virgin, where I had dropped a bottle of water.  From Virgin it basically turned into a walk/jog/walk the rest of the way home.  My legs were just dead and kept cramping up. Anyway, after today I'm having second thoughts about the Utah Valley Marathon, considering switching just to the half.  I guess the one good thing was the fact I burned over 2700 calories and lost about 5 pounds on the adventure.

Well I woke up this morning and really didn't feel up to going over to the race.  I felt really sore from the 4 truck loads of rock we shoveled yesterday, plus the fact I hadn't ran much during the week, left me feeling pretty flat.  However, I decided I would at least attempt to race and just listen to my body.  I figured if I started hurting too much I would just back off a bit.

I did a two mile warm-up with Mike and Bill, then got ready for the start.  The weather this year was cooler than in previous years, not terribly cold, but colder than normal

1-5:10 This is always the fast mile.  I did a good job holding back, I think I was in 14th place after the first mile

2-5:51 Made a little surge here and moved into 8th place for a bit

3-5:50 This mile felt ok, but I got passed back by Jose and another guy

4-6:14 I stopped at this aid station to stretch for a bit and from here to the finish only gave about 80 to 85%

I just did away with my original marathon training plan and decided I'm going to try something more simple the next 11 weeks in preparation for Utah Valley.  I am only going to do one hard workout each week either a  6 mile tempo run around 6:15 pace or 1600 m repeats at 5:45 pace.  All the other runs are going to be ran at 7:20 pace.  I think I've been running too slow on my easy runs.  Also I'm going give myself the option of either runnning on Fridays or not. Saturdays will be a longer run.  I'm hoping to have the mileage be between 50 to 60 miles each week, and I'm sure people are wondering yes I'm going to continue to play basketball 3 times a week.

Today I went out and did 6 miles, it was a good run over to the Hurricane ball fields and back

Ran with Mike and Bill from the old store out to Ivins, did part of the Spectrum course, then came back on the second leg of the Lake to Lake relay.  This was a decent run we averaged right at 8:00 pace.  I got cold we were running in rain and snow most of the run, glad to be done with this run.

This week has been a struggle trying to get my runs in, been pretty busy with teaching driver's ed every night.  It hasn't helped that my feet and legs have been bothering me.  I didn't feel that great this morning, but still glad I got up and did 6.  I just ran easy over to Hurricane and back.I got a new pair of Asics Landreth which were nice to run in.

La Verkin Loop 3 easy miles, planning on more miles this afternoon, no driver's education class today yeah!

10 miles this evening.  I did a 5 mile tempo in the middle of the run.  I did this tempo on a pretty flat, fair course.  Started on the state road at the real estate sign after a 2 mile warm-up from my house.

1-6:08 on state road 9 and then over to 400 South

2-6:15 out on 180 east

3-6:20 out past my school, this mile has a little bit of uphill

4-6:07 pretty nice flat mile here

5-6:21 I had to slow down some crossing 700 west.

I thought about doing 6 but decided to stop at 5.  My legs have been tight all week, and I'm planning on running long tomorrow.

31:16 (6:15 average)

I was actually pretty please with this workout and think it will be a good tempo route in the future.  Also in the future I plan on adding 1 more mile basically putting me right back at where I start the tempo, so that should work out good.

I did 3 miles easy cool-down home.  On the way home I ran into John Stucki, which led to some interesting conversations.

Ran down the marathon course this morning with Bill, James, and Steve.  I really didn't want to run the course because I don't like it much, but it is nice with a lot of downhill, so it makes for a good training run.  The last time I ran the course was during the marathon last fall which didn't turn out very good.  In fact seems like lately I've been able to run much faster on training runs compared to the actual race day on that course.

This morning we started up in Veyo and did the first 4 miles pretty easy, then Steve and I speed up a bit.  Bill took off from the start.  We stopped at Diamond Valley for water and I took a Cliff Shot, then I decided to do some tempo miles even though I did a 5 mile tempo run last night.

1-5:43

2-5:53

3-5:57- Caught Bill by the bottom of Winchester

4-6:47 Easy up through Winchester

5-6:04

6-5:54

7-6:10

8-6:13

Once I hit town I stopped and waited a few minutes for the other guys.  Steve came flying by pretty fast, he was doing a 10 mile tempo.  James also was running pretty fast, so he decided to pick it up more than he was planning on originally.  Bill and I ran a few easy miles, then picked it back up the last mile to the finish line.

The run was a little short of 20, so I added a little when I got home.

Ended up with a 6:52 average which I was pretty happy with.  Also happy that I got in a longer run and a decent week of training considering being pretty busy right now.

3 easy miles this morning around town.

Well, I don't really know how to describe this workout.  I was planning on doing a 5 mile tempo run on the loop through Hurricane.  I did a two mile warm-up and then got into the tempo

1-6:07 felt pretty good

2-6:20 not feeling too good, made the mistake of drinking some kool-aid before the run.

3-6:24 my stomach was really hurting so I stopped at the end of this mile

18:55 (6:18 average)

I jogged one mile to try to get my stomach feeling better then did another faster mile

1-6:37 didn't feel very good

Jogged another mile easy, then finished with one more fast mile

1-6:09 I felt better, but this mile was also a gradual downhill which was nice.

Finished with 1 mile jog home, then took Jarren on a 3 mile bike ride.

Did a little over 19 miles down the marathon course this morning.  The first 10 I mainly ran with Ty and we averaged right around 7:30 pace.  I then picked it up pretty good until about a mile from town.  Once I hit town I really struggled.  I'm not really sure what happened, I think probably just a case of being dehydrated or not having enough fuel.  Anyway, I was pretty frustrated with the way this run ended, but I guess I should still be happy I got the miles in.  I am a little concerned with Utah Valley Marathon right around the corner, hopefully this was just one of those runs that didn't go very good.  Considering how busy I've been the training so far this spring hasn't been too bad.

Well, this race didn't turn out like I was hoping.  My training has been better than last year at this time and I really figured I could at least break 3 hours.  I didn't feel very good when I got up and felt even worse after I had some oatmeal for breakfast and a bananna.  I met up with everyone and caught the bus up to the start.  I didn't feel very good on the ride up, and was a little concerned about the stomach issues.  Everything else felt ok, not great though.  PF and hip pain still bothering.

1-7:17- slow start, but that was ok

2-6:28

3-6:33

4-7:07 bathroom stop

5-6:21

6-6:28- feeling like I'm getting into a good rhythm

7-6:37

8-7:10 some uphill here

9-7:17 more uphill, stopped to throw-up

10-6:47

11-6:35

12-6:55- PF starting to act up

13-6:49

Half 1:29

14-6:59

15-7:46- more stomach issues

16-7:08

17-7:19

18-7:19

19-9:12- another stop to throw up, too bad nothing in the stomach

20-7:15

21-7:45

22-8:43- struggling..struggling

23-10:42- some power walking with over-weight half marathon women finishers

24-13:06- still struggling..stop again to puke, and sat down to stretch for a bit

25-8:55 decide to try to push through the pain

26-7:37 gave myself a pep talk and ran a little better this last mile.

.2- :32

I was happy with the first half and a few of the miles down the canyon.  I fell apart pretty bad around mile 21, but was able to make it to the finish.

I've really been struggling with marathons the last few years.  I have lots of doubts and really need to do something to boost my confidence, (maybe training more might help.)  I would really like to improve my PR at the half marathon distance, so that might be more of my focus for the near future.

After the race, I was still feeling pretty sick.  I ended up vomiting 4 more times at the race and then a few more times back at the hotel.  I was a little concerned the last time, because it looked like some blood coming up.  Anyway, my dad and brother in law gave me a blessing which I was grateful for.  I slept most of the way home, and seem to be feeling better now.  I was able to eat some some soup and a little bit of chicken and things are starting to feel a little better.

Anyway, to wrap things up.  Still a fun weekend.  It was nice to spend some time with my parents and my sister and her family.  She did great for her second marathon 4:25.  I was also happy to see a lot of the guys from the race team and blog run good races.

This is a nice course, but I'm not sure I will be back next year for the full, maybe the half.

Wow. Puking sucks. You seemed pretty upbeat by the end of the write-up, so hopefully things are on the upswing. Your training has been pretty darn consistent.

Sorry about the puking. I know it's not really funny but it kind of made me chuckle thinking about how I found you after last years race in Provo.

Puking up blood is never a good thing.

Your entry made me laugh with "some power walking with over-weight half marathon women finishers." I've been there and think most people can relate. Get feeling better and you'll be fine next go-around.

Probably the heat. It takes me time to get used to it in the summer. Even when you're not running, the heat takes its toll on you and therefore affects your run even if your run is during cool times of the day (if there is such a thing in Southern Utah).

Today was my first day back to work.  Things weren't too bad, just lots of meetings.  Anyway I got away from school around 2:30 and got home to find my new Garmin 205 Forerunner waiting for me.  It took a little while to get it all programmed, like I wanted.

5- My schedule called for 2x1 mile repeats @ 5:39 pace with 800 rest.  Anyway, that didn't happen.  I did 1.5 miles warm-up around Hurricane and then hit the new track.

1-6:03 (1600m) I was basically struggling from the beginning, didn't help that is was 101 degrees outside when I was running at 4:00 pm

Did the 800 recovery, very slow

2-3:04 (800m) I struggled to do two laps, and stopped after the second lap.

1.5 mile cool-down.

10- I had planned on going over and doing the club run, but then decided against it.  I'm was worried about not being able to go 19 miles.  I haven't done any long runs since the Utah Valley Marathon.  It also didn't help that Jarren was up a few times during the night and the shuttle was leaving at 4:30 am (I don't do early mornings very well)  Anyway, I ended up sleeping in and then did a run from the start of the old Hurricane Half Starting Line back to my house.  Started late 9:00 am, so already hot.

How is the hip doing Dustin? I have been struggling with a sore hip on and off for 3-4 months. Once I started biking about a month ago I have got the hip feeling about 85-90%.

On the bike it is making me be very balanced in my effort and I am not favoring one side of my body like I must be when running. Might be worth a few bike sessions a week to help balance out and strengthen the hips...has been working for me- Missed you on Saturday, I understand about not being ready for 19 miles.....I wasn't and now I am paying the price

Did an ok workout this afternoon over at the Hurricane Track. I did a 1.5 mile warm-up, it was 102 when I started.  After the warm-up I did

5 x 800 at Yasso Pace with 400 meter recovery

1-2:56 (5:53 pace)

2-2:55 (5:52 pace)

3-2:58 (6:03 pace) measured a bit short of  .49

Took 5 minute break to get water and cool off.  Sign at the high schol now said it was 106

4-2:59 (6:01 pace)

5-3:01 (6:03)

The first three felt ok, but the last two were a struggle.  Probably a combination of the heat and being out of shape.

Basketball this morning, planning on an easy 6 this afternoon and then hopefully 15 miles tomorrow.

6-Ran over to Hurricane City park, ran into some of my students hanging out at the park, (just what I didn't need or want on a Friday afternoon, especially these kids, they were a rough bunch)  After getting a drink at the park I then struggled the rest of the way home.  I did another mile in the garage on the treadmill to make it 6.  PF was hurting some and still coughing up stuff.

15- Really good run down the marathon course for me today.  I haven't done any long runs, since the Utah Valley Marathon back in June.  Last Saturday I ran 10 and averaged 7:12 pace, today I felt much better hit 15 miles with an overall average of 6:49.  I kept it easy the first 4 miles, then gradually picked up the pace, and a few miles were I backed off, but overall a pretty good effort.

30 minutes on the bike this morning.  Pretty rare for me, I went to play basketball and there were 9 guys so to make it even I came home and rode the bike.  I probably would have stayed and played, but my thumb is still really bothering me from jamming it last Monday.

9- Ran 9 miles this evening, still pretty hot out.  I ran out on 600 North, then cut down through the wash and made it to McDonalds.  I had to stop and use the bathroom there, then I ran over to the high school and watched a little of the football practice and then finally made it home.  My legs were pretty sore tonight, I think the run on Saturday really worked them.

6- Did 4 x Pah Tempe Hill Repeats.  I haven't done these repeats for a long time, but I've changed my training up a bit and plan on doing these more often along with the Yasso 800's. I plan to alternate between the two each week. It just seems like I was running better a few years ago, when I was doing both hill repeats and 800's.  I'm planning to do a weekly tempo run also.

Anyway did a 2 mile warm-up, started at 5:00 pm , but still really hot outside.

Pah Temple is like .31 in distance

1-2:21-legs feeling pretty tight

2-2:17- felt better

3-2:23-starting to hurt

4-2:34- stopped and walked for a bit

Did 2 mile cool-down.  I actually ran down to the river and swam for a bit, then made my way home.  My legs are dead, they were still sore from the run Saturday and today's workout probably didn't help.  I plan to take it easy tomorrow, and maybe do a tempo run Thursday or I may put it off until Friday.

Did a run this afternoon from the Staples on Kolob Road down through Virgin and the La Verkin Twist.  I did this run back in April, so it was interesting to compare splits.

Today                       4-22-11

1- 6:36                      6:53

2- 6:40                      6:40

3- 6:32                      6:32

4- 6:47                      6:41

5- 6:43                      6:38

6- 7:34                      7:14

7- 7:53                      7:13

8- 6:33                      6:27

9- 6:17                      6:10

10- 7:02                    6:52

1:08:46 (6:52 avg)      (6:44 avg)

So I was a little slower today than in April.  I especially struggled on the uphills.  Anyway, glad I did this run but I'm still feeling pretty worried about STG.  Probably just try to go with the attitude of having a good time and trying to run with friends, not worry about a certain or place.  I know that might sound lame, but that is kind of where my attitude is right now with running.

Ran 1.5 miles around La Verkin, then got in my truck and drove up to Rockville. I ran 10 down from Rockville and then met up with Sunny.  I felt ok on this run, expect I wore the compression socks and my feet were on fire, they really were bugging me, not hot like a blister, but more like athlete's foot or something?  They were also bugging me last night before bed.  Anyway not sure if I will wear the compression socks during the marathon.  I might go get some of the sleeves.  Ok back to the run.  I actually did this same run last year on this same weekend.  Comparing the times, I'm not as far off as I thought I would be.  Last year I averaged 6:50 for 15.  Today was 6:59 for 10, but I also never felt like I was pushing the pace.  Also last year I was 10 pounds lighter, so I'm sure that makes a difference

Sorry to hear you're sick. Tell those kids at school to cover their mouths when they cough. Hopefully it will clear up soon.

What are you guys' plans this weekend other than the marathon? We were thinking we might stay and watch some conference with you guys if it won't interfere with anything.

From Dustin on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 15:43:15 from 204.113.48.131

Yeah Steve that won't be a problem stay as long as you need or want. What time are you coming down?

From Steve Piccolo on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 18:09:45 from 155.101.146.105

Kate gets done with preschool around 2:30 pm, so we'll head down after that. So realistically, we'll probably get to LaVerkin around 7-8 pm. Does Jordan have a game that night?

From Dustin on Wed, Sep 28, 2011 at 00:38:48 from 209.33.192.10

Jordan does have a game at 7:00 against Pine View Friday night. Not sure how much he will get to play since it is varsity, kind of depends on what the score is. What time are you shooting for in the marathon? I have no idea where I'm at?

From Steve Piccolo on Wed, Sep 28, 2011 at 15:39:30 from 155.101.146.105

Where's the game? Hurricane? We can meet you there if you think that would work. My cell is 801 471 4924.

I was going to try to run 3:10 or so due to lack of training. But then I talked to Steiger, and he encouraged me to try for a 3:00. If I can do it, that will be awesome. If not, I have nothing to lose.

What are you thinking?

From Dustin on Wed, Sep 28, 2011 at 15:44:55 from 204.113.48.131

Yeah I'm in the same boat with time goals. I've had such bad experiences the last few years. My friend Bill wants me to try to help him break 3. My vote would be try to run 7's until mile 18 and then pick it up from there. My last three marathons have been ugly 3:15, 3:18, and 3:18. If I just could run 7's the entire way that would be a 3:03. A few weeks ago I did 15 down the course and averaged 6:49, so hard to know where I'm at as far as fitness.

From Steve Piccolo on Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 17:18:18 from 155.101.146.105

Hi D,

I saw your comment on the discussion forum. That group is planning to go through the half at around 1:29 or 1:30, so that might be faster than what you want to do. When i calculated out the splits, I was thinking that it might be best to hit the half around 1:32, which is about 7 minute pace average (faster on the downhill, slower on the uphill). So maybe we should meet up with the group but then see how we feel and can always back off if their pace is too fast?

Also, I'm going to need to go to the expo before we go to LaVerkin, so we probably won't get to LaVerkin until at least 8 pm. We can meet you at the high school or whatever you prefer.

Well, this was a bummer race.  Today is Dec. 31st and I'm just getting around to writing this up, so it probably won't be much.  The marathon this year was going ok until around 10 miles, then I started feeling sick.  Instead of dealing with all the sickness and recovery I took the easy way out and decided to not finish the race.  I've only had 1 other DNF in all my years of running and that was a 5000m back in college.  Anyway, I just struggled today period.

Meet up with Mike, Bill, Art, and Ken? (one of Mike's neighbors) We drove up to the top of Snow Canyon State Park, then took it easy for the first few miles down the canyon, then we started to pick it up a bit around the ranger station until Snow Canyon Parkway (6:20's)  At mile 5 I picked it up pretty good and did a two mile tempo back on Snow Canyon Parkwary (5:58, 6:48) then an easy two back to Mike's, pretty good run overall.  I'm excited to run the Snow Canyon Half in a few weeks, if everything works out with the baby and McKinzie's wedding.

It always feels bad like that after you get going on it again. If you can stand the pain, keep going each day just a little and strengthen it up and work out the junk.

By the way... sounds like all is going well with the babe and your wife. So happy to hear!

This afternoon, I went and ran up the Overlook Trail to the top.  The first mile over to the trail head was good, but the second mile of climbing was absolutely terrible.  I kept experiencing lots of pain in my back, once on top things were a little better.  The only problem up on top of the Overlook was dealing with a very strong, cold headwind for about two miles.  The last two miles were ok.
