Nice to meet you. Another runner from St. George. Welcome to the Blog Gang, and keep up the training!

Hey Clyde, Good to see you got your blog-up and running. Welcome!

I went out to discover new running paths around our new neighborhood and had planned on going 5-6. I ended up going up around Green Springs golf course then catching a trail up to the water tower and coming back down by the industrial park. I felt pretty good. Although on the run last Saturday I jumped of a rock about 5 feet tall and bruised my heel and it has been sore all weekend and bothered me a little on this run.

Clyde:

I thought I'd post the advice I gave you in the e-mail here for everybody's benefit:

You have two issues I can think of that put you at high risk of injury. First, you mention you have some extra weight. This puts unnecessary stress on some muscles and joints.

Second, your mile PR is 4:15. That means at some point you had quite a bit of explosive strength. You probably still do. However some parts of your body are probably not able to handle it right now and you can tear them easily if you get too excited.

I would suggest three things:

- Eat healthy to the best of your knowledge

- Add some cross training (eg. bike to work) to drop the weight and develop aerobic capacity while strengthening auxiliary muscles and avoiding the stress of extra running

- Avoid any impulsive moves - always increase the pace gradually, never sprint without a proper warmup, be very careful with the increase of volume and intensity of your training, etc.

I see no reason why you could not work up to a 2:35 marathon or faster in 3 years if you remain steady in your training.

From superfly on Tue, Mar 07, 2006 at 13:27:35

Thanks Sasha.

From Steve Hooper on Wed, Mar 08, 2006 at 10:43:13

Personally Clyde, I think you could get down to 2:35 much faster than 3 years. If you're consistant through the summer you might come close to that time this year at the St. George Marathon.

The only reason I differ from what Sasha said on the 3 years is because I've run with you and know your speed 1st hand.

From Bill on Wed, Mar 08, 2006 at 12:00:31

Clyde, from my view which is from the back. I have to agree with Steve. you have the ability to run at least 2:40 this year if you train right and don't get a ticket for speeding on the running path:):)

A rainy cold run in St.George. We ran a pretty good pace most of the run. For the most part the track was very flat, with the exeption of a mile hill. Half mile up one side and half mile down the other. I had guessed that we had run about 7 but Steve was once again really close by his 9 mile guess.

Total Distance

Went out against the wind on a uphill, sandy track. I know this sounds like a story from your Grandfather but it was murder. All of it hurt, most of it was slow, and none of it was easy.

From d-enz on Thu, Mar 09, 2006 at 09:40:30

The SuperFly putting in some good miles this week. I agree with the other posts, with good consistent training and proper preparations you should be able to run under 2:35 sometime in the future. (just don't count on me to be your pace setter)

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Mar 09, 2006 at 09:58:50

I did a little loop run out on a desert trail by my house. I felt a lot better than the day before. It ended up being 6.6 miles, then I came home and switched into some new race shoes and did 1 mile out and 1 back just to get use to the shoes a little before the Spectrum 10k next week.

From Steve Hooper on Fri, Mar 10, 2006 at 09:35:03

Hey Clyde Sweet new picture. So, how did those shoes feel when you tried them out? I came home and put 4 miles on those mizunos and they feel so much better than my old asics. I didn't realize how thrashed my asics really were. I think they were part of my problem with my calf muscles/ achilles getting so tight.

From SuperFly on Fri, Mar 10, 2006 at 10:15:16

My new racer shoes felt good. Really light, and breathable. Did you get a deal on your mizunos?

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Mar 10, 2006 at 11:12:21

Clyde:

In answer to your question, given your heavy frame and tendency to injury I would avoid Deseret News. That is the only marathon that has made my legs feel sore enough to make running painful afterwards in the last two years. My legs do have quite a bit of resistance to pounding. They are not sore after Alta Perivian Lodge or St. George. In the summer I run down the Squaw Peak road full-blast (4:30 pace) for the whole 4 miles, and do not feel anything afterwards.

Salt Lake in June should also give you more time for recovery.

Why was this not the best run?

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 08:58:59

Looks like this week was much better than the last one - 55 vs. 39. Sustained 55 carries you over into a different domain in all long distances, even the 5 K, compared to 39.

Can you enter as much as you remember of your workouts since the beginning of the year so we can see some patterns?

From superfly on Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 10:10:27

Sasha, I only started training again 3 weeks ago. I stopped at the first of Nov because I coach wrestling at Dixie High School. Then I started back up at the end of Feb. My weeks prior to last were 35-39 miles for those weeks. I went into Nov training and weighing 165. I came back in Feb weighing 175. I am now about 167 would like to be about 162 for prim running weight. I think that this week I'll cut back a little. I will try and ride a bike on days I don't run as much. I felt like I went a little too far last week. I was just dead at the end of the run on Sat. Legs felt like noodles. There is a 10k this Sat and I'd like to have some gas in the tank to run that race.

From Bill on Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 10:37:33

Super fly, 15 miles Saturday considering the wheather is great. way to go. I Hope to see you tuesday.

From Steve Hooper on Mon, Mar 13, 2006 at 11:16:54

I think the way you felt on Sat. just has to do with your increase of miles so quickly. I feel listening to your body is #1 priority and cutting back, taking it slower and adding some cross training will help out more than trying to push up the miles again this week. Look at Allen, he only runs 3 days a week at 48 and he kept with us the whole way on Sat. There's something to be said for cross training.

That's why I'm going sledding today!

Total Distance
6.00

I want to do a little cross training and see how my body works with that. So I ran 6 miles from my house to my in-laws house. Then road a bike a longer 9 miles back to my house. Pretty good workout. Body feels like its getting stronger. I have pain in the back of my knee or the top of my calf. I can't figure out which one it is. If I could get rid of that pain I'd feel great.

Ran with Steve and Bill. The run was pretty good. Some dirt trail and the rest on the streets of STG. I feel ok just don’t have the kick from last week. Instead of running and feeling loose and ready I feel more like I'm laboring just to stay with the pack. Steve really looks like a different runner. Both on our Saturday run, and last night he looks strong. Maybe we all should go sledding and quench our thirst with some MaGiC JuIcE.

you did just fine. not every day can be an energy day. when I run more miles, I really have to make sure I am eating enough. lots of protien, fruit, veg, and lots of fluids. you mentioned you had lost some weight. I have to tell myself to eat the right stuff.

From superfly on Wed, Mar 15, 2006 at 10:50:34

From Steve Hooper on Wed, Mar 15, 2006 at 11:31:41

Hey 163 is great. I'm still not dropping the wieght like I want. Are you eating any different?

If you would of held your surge for 10 more sec. I would have been toast. I was totally running

href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaerobic">anaerobicly when you first took off. I know for a fact you have a lot more speed than I. Your 4:15 mile PR time is proof. My fastest official time I have is 4:23.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Mar 15, 2006 at 15:39:05

Clyde:

All three of you are picking up the mileage from the level at which any mileage increase gives improvement. Therefore, all three should be improving. However, it is going to happen at a different rate. So while you could drop Steve quite easily a week ago, this week it may not be so easy. This is most likely not because you are running any worse, in fact you may have actually gotten stronger. However he may have gotten stronger even more, and caught up to your fitness level. For a correct measure of fitness you should have a challening workout on a fixed course that you do every two weeks or so, and watch your times hopefully improve.

Total Distance
11.70

I went against my game plan for the week and did a long run. I just could not say no the nice sunny afternoon. It was soo nice after work. So I put on my skimpiest running outfit and hit the trail. I ran most pretty much the same 10 miler that kicked my butt last Wed... I just added a different trail somewhere along the line and add a mile and a half or so. I felt pretty good. Really didnt try and run hard. If I pushed it at all it was from miles 7-10. My knee is a little sore now (morning after). Hopefully it will work its self out with time.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Mar 16, 2006 at 08:32:30

Clyde:

You should really push only a couple of times a week, three maximum. Other days should be easy runs to relax and enjoy nature while building aerobic fitness. What I do to avoid the temptation to run fast on easy days is find slower training partners. See if your wife, neighbors, or co-workers would like to go for a couple of miles sometimes.

From Wildbull on Thu, Mar 16, 2006 at 11:51:59

Clyde, your an animal! (per your wife) I agree with Sasha. you need to let your body recover from the hard runs. your Body only gets better when it rests from a hard run. too many of those in a short time. all your doing is tearing it down and not letting it rebuild itself. thus increasing your chances of injury.

Total Distance

Wanted to take it easy...So I road a bike 6.3 miles to warm up then went out and did 5 miles of running. Pretty sore on the run. May take Friday off to try and heal for the race on Sat. I think I'm overall really improving. My weight is down to where I want to be. My lungs feel like they are getting stronger. I just need to work on my overall strength. Now that I'm down to my desired running weight I think I'll lift more weights to try and keep some strength. With the 10-12 pounds I've lost in the last 3 weeks I feel I've also lost some strength.

Ran the Spectrum 10k. Did one mile of warm up. Time of 37:16. I really felt good and was pleased with the race. Considering I've felt horrible all week. I should have pushed harder the last mile...I just felt like I was going to throw up if I pushed it harder than the pace I was going. I think I need to do some speed work. This vomiting thing happens too often at races. Speed work would help my body get use to pushing it that hard...I don't konw?

I biked a total of 16 miles this week. So I'll add 4 easy mies to my week total.

Clyde:

Good job on the race. This throw-up feeling is actually fairly normal. It means you are good at pushing yourself. I experience it often in good races. Lasse Viren threw up after winning the Olympic 5000 meter race. However, speed work will still be beneficial, but be careful to not get injured.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Mar 20, 2006 at 07:19:07

Did you have any warm-up or cool-down? Your mileage is recored as if you did not.

From Steve Hooper on Mon, Mar 20, 2006 at 15:41:17

Clyde, Way to go on Sat. A low 37 is something to be proud of.

Concerning your thow-up fellings - I think re-training your stomach/digestive system to handle racing will come with a little more training/ speed work and possibly diet. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's good to know that you're able to atleast push your body to that point. Have you tried anything to settle your stomach - Ginger, Tums, etc. before a race?

From SuperFly on Mon, Mar 20, 2006 at 15:46:53

I've never tried anything to settle my stomach. You'll have to fill me in on the Ginger? How and when to take. Is this part of the magic juice mix?

Did some of the T'Bone trail backwards. The whole run I was thinking how nice it was to be running for the first time in forever and not have some part of my body hurting. Then with a mile left my left forfoot started throbbing out of the blue. I have no idea why, even now (morning after) it kills. I honestly dont know what my problem is with shoes and feet this year but its honestly really frustrating.

All day at work I wanted to get out and run. So I left an hour early and went home to gear up for my "Big loop" run. The first three miles are a good warm up as they are uphill. Then the next 7 are on trail and dirt roads. The pace on those is a little slower because I don't want to tweek my ankle. The last part is on paved roads back to the house. Its a good run. This is a fun run, but has at least 4500 elevation gain. It was my first trail marathon last year. Sprained my ankle at mile 4 blasting down the trail along side the stream, so had a slow go the rest of the way. (6 Hr 25 mins..check the website for last years quick finish times...karl meltzer was blazing...)No cost...just bring aid station food, and energy to run 4 hours or more...or do the first loop...it is kind of a figure 8 loop. Here are the links to the washatch alpine striders club. The Moellmer Calendar has all the other info. for that race. http://www.users.qwest.net/~cirnielsen/wasalpstriders.html

http://www.users.qwest.net/~cirnielsen/moellmercalendar.html

From joarj-trail runner on Thu, Mar 23, 2006 at 19:47:41

Here is the link for all the races across the country...there are a few in arizona, and utah, and wyoming...close to you, and then others all over. http://www.ultrarunner.net/ They also have a decent magazine, which is basically race results, ads, and somebodies review of different races, along with some good training info. Trail Runner Magazine is also okay.

They say it is really good to run 3-4 hours, back to back, two days in a row for good preparation. 60 miles a week is also good, with plenty of trails and elevation gain. But last summer, I was in the best shape I have ever been in, and was only doing 20-30 miles a week, but was running in WY, and doing loads of elevation. The three trail races I did were tough and good experiences, and am looking forward to doing much better this year. I am planning BST Salt Lake Trail Marathon in two+ weeks, and have only been doing 2 1/2 or so hour runs on weekends, but hope that the double mileage I have been doing will help out also...the next two saturdays will be 3 1/2 ers.

I will be crewing my buddy Ty Draney (Afton, WY) on one of his four Grand Slam 100 milers this summer. Here is his advice, as any ultra trail runner would tell you..."I wouldn't add a long run to your total but I would start doing a long (3-4) hour run every week. Even if your total doesn't go up you need to have a long run to replicate race conditions. A long run allows for capillarization (cool word eh!-I promise, I'm not trying to sound like I write for Runner's World) of your legs and allows you to get your fueling plan down, along with giving your endocrine system a chance to get stressed like it does in an ultra. You know as well as I do that Bonneville shoreline runs more like 50k than a marathon."

I am just a beginner, and just enjoy running trails and being out in the dirt.

Hey Clyde, It's looking like I'm going to have to skip the 20 miler on Sat. I'm pretty upset about this whole knee thing. However, I do feel like it's healing and I did jog/ walk this morning and it didn't bug me too bad. I'm just nervous if I go out for 20 with you guys I'll push too hard and weaken the healing that's already taken place. I hope you guys have a good run.

Good idea to go with your wife on an easy day. However, 2 miles is not enough, even if you have planned a 20 miler the next day. If your long run is so long you have to taper for it, then it is too long. It is best to distribute the mileage as evenly as possible throughout the week.

Two miles into the run I ran into Bill who was coming off the T'bone trail...This seems like a popular place this week. I didn't loosen up very well before my run so I was really tight and had to stop and stretch. The whole run took me forever today. I had rain the last 3 miles. Ironic I also didn't feel much like running yesterday, feeling a little sore so only went 4.5 miles on the treadmill while watching the Jazz game at home. Hopefully, I'll be more excited tonight since I'm doing hill repeats.

From Bill on Thu, Mar 30, 2006 at 13:24:00

good work out clyde. I got worried about you after we met. the clouds looked pretty thick and i knew you were going to get dumped on.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Mar 30, 2006 at 15:33:45

I think I've said this before, but I feel this should be repeated again and again. The difference between the front pack and the midpack is only maybe 30% in the talent. Most of the front pack gets their training in no matter what. Circumstances may make it difficult, and the training may have to be adjusted but it does happen regardless.

On the other hand, while the lack of natural talent is a factor in a number of cases, getting the runs in only when the circumstances make it convenient is most often the very reason for running 4:00 marathon instead of 3:00, or 3:15 instead of 2:30.

It is like home teaching. If we do it only when it is convenient or easy, we get only 50%. I would venture to say that it is convenient to run no more than 50% of the mileage that you can and ought to run to fulfill your true potential under your circumstances. This applies to any life schedule, talent level, etc.

Thus, every time you choose to run in bad weather you are taking a step towards the front pack. Take enough of those steps, and you are in for a pleasant surprise - you start out with them and they cannot drop you.

I'll have to take it easy on Friday and give myself a chance to recharge.

Ran with the club. Steve couldn't make it so it was Dustin, and the Bull. We looped the black hill and ran through town. I felt good until the last 2 miles kind of cramped up. Tryed to push the last 7 miles or so. I have a lot to work on before I can run a competitive marathon. I wish there was another month before Boston...

Total Distance

I did a version of my big loop run. Switched some things up and made it an even 12 miles. It was an amazing day in STG. I left my house at 4:30 and it felt like it was 80. The first 3 miles are uphill and my calves were as tight as they have ever been. I thought about turning around but waited until I crested the hill to see if they felt better. They did and I was able to pick it up from there. Finished, and felt good other than my legs where hot trying to fall asleep.

Clyde - good work. Regarding your question on supplements. My approach is to focus on eating right. Then you should not need any supplements on a regular basis. I suppose they would be helpful if you were in adverse conditions and were not able to eat a healthy balanced diet.

However, during the race my problem is that I cannot afford to stop and eat a full meal. I can get close - last year I ate 4 bananas without slowing down during the St. George marathon. However, this does not quite cut it - I need to find something that restores the glycogen availability quickly. Powerade kind of works in the second half of the race for me. But I feel there is something better. I am going to experiment.

Got up this morning and did a run. I have to go to SLC for a work meeting today and tomorrow so I'm not sure what kind of running I'm going to get in. I hope to get 4-5 more tonight, but I'll have to see what kind of time I'll have.

Didn't have any time so I'm glad I got some miles in this morning.

Got up at 5:30a.m. and ran from the Little America up past the Capitol building up into some residentual area and did a loop in there then turned around and found a road up this little canyon so I followed it up and took it to were a trail came back down. Then just ran back down through town to my suite at Little America.

Ran out in the desert by my house. Its starting to feel like summer here. In a short time I'll have to start running later in the day because of the heat. I am putting some fake grass in my back yard and I got fryed this afternoon, so I'll be pink for the 10k in the morning.

Total Distance
7.50

Did the 10k and a little over a mile of warm up. I ran the race as good as I could have due to my situation. I had a bad sun burn on my back and was feeling wore out before I even started running. During the race I started out a little faster than I would have preferd. I never could find a smooth pace that would allow me to catch the leader. I ended up 2nd with a time of 37:50 slower than a couple weeks ago, but the course was harder too. About 3 miles of up hill, but the conditions today were very nice...good day to run, fun atmospher. Now I have to finish installing the fake grass in my back yard.

I did my new big loop run. I wanted to get one more longer run in before I started to taper off for Boston next Monday. The run felt so good I ran smooth and easy no problems at all. I hope that I'm finally starting to progress to the next level. I have decided to run the Boston marathon as a learning experience/training run. Everyone I talk to says this isn’t the course to go out and PR on. So I'm going to run hard but in more of a training/ learning educational mentality than a competitive “I’m not going to let him pass me” state of mind.

Let me know what you come up with as far as lifting, I've had thoughts about doing a little bit of that also. We did a pretty good circuit workout when I was at Ricks. Do you go to any particular gym or club?

From SuperFly on Wed, Apr 12, 2006 at 10:16:58

No. I don't have any gym memberships. I will possibly try and use the high schools gym (because its free). Or maybe by some free weights and just lift at home. I don't think I'll try and bulk up so 20-30lbs would be good to try and tone with. I'd rather do it a home just because going to any gym takes so much more effort. I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Ran the Boston today...What a race. I finished in the top 1200 and ran it in 3:00.48, I was really disappointed that I didn't cut one run it under 3hrs. I ran the first half nice and easy and ran a negitive split on the second half. But I waited too long to start pushing, I just needed one minute less. Oh well. This race was hard I decided I like the St.George better. Its been a good trip, and it was good to come out and run with the other members of our club. I finished as the 3rd person from southern Utah, and the 12th from Utah.

Comments
From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Apr 18, 2006 at 09:20:19

Good work. I have been watching you on the Internet. I was very pleased to see that you were holding a steady pace on the second half, and even sped up. Note that your time is equivalent to about 2:56 in St. George. Also note that statisically Utahns do not do well at sea-level marathons on the first try. Travel adds extra complexity, and something always goes wrong. Also, I believe, just because you are at a lower elevation does not mean you are going to run faster right away. So just like it is hard for a sea-level runner to take advantage of the elevation drop of St. George, it is equally hard for an altitude runner to take advantage of the extra oxygen at sea level without some extensive preparation.

From SuperFly on Wed, Apr 19, 2006 at 10:44:13

Sasha thanks for your comments. I felt like I ran an ok race. I was told by another runner to wait until mile 17 to go out instead of at around 13. I think in doing that I waited too long and cost running under 3hrs. It would have also been nice to know anything about the course, so next time I run there I think it could be a lot better just knowing what I do now.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Apr 19, 2006 at 14:33:54

Knowing the right pace to go is very difficult, and comes somewhat with practice. I still have not figured it out. What I know, however, is that if I start fast, I finish slower, but still fast. If I start slow, I usually finish slower. When I ran my PR in St. George, although the second half is much faster than the first, it was a positive split 1:11:49 - 1:12:58. Other good marathons have followed the pattern - first half about 3-4 minutes faster than the second with the adjustment for the grade difference. Interestingly enough, I follow the same pattern in a 5 K. I have been able to run 5:00 - 5:10 - 5:15, but not 5:15-5:10-5:00. If I go out at 5:15, it is going to be 5:15-5:15 for the other miles, or slower. No amount or type of training I've tried so far has been able to change it.

However, there are many marathoners that run their best even or negative splitting. I believe to figure out what works for you need to try it both ways several times.

From Steve Hooper on Wed, Apr 19, 2006 at 16:21:09

Clyde, Once again GREAT JOB on the Marathon and the negative split.

From looking at how you picked-up your pace with 9 miles to go, it looks like you didn't decided to even try for sub 3:00 until mile 17. Is this correct?

It's great to see you're feeling recovered from the Marathon. I really think you're going to see some great result by building on your base from Boston.

If you continue your two-a-days and add some speed workout once a week you're going to see your times drop even more,

probably your weight as well. Just don't over-do-it.

Then after work I meet with the club and we ran over Formaster and backwards around our little bottom end loop. The loop is 8.7 so I did a little lap at the park after and it made it and even 9 on GE.

I'm feeling good. With the extra miles that I plan on running I just hope to stay free from injury. I try and run easy and uniform on my runs to prevent anything from happening.

If I can stay healthy and I can handle doing this many miles for the next few months I think I can really improve. For now I have decided to just take it one day, or one run at a time because it gets stressful looking at the big picture...all those miles, all those runs, speed work, new shoes, yada, yada yada

I couldn't get up today so I had to do it all after work. Bad choice.

I worked late so by the time I went out it was 5:40p.m. which for me is late to begin a long run. It was really windy and if I could have gotten out of it-I would have.

I did my desert big loop run and the thing I've been living in fear of ever since the first day I ran out there happened today. I saw a snake. Holly crap I almost stepped on the stupid thing. I'm almost sure it was a rattler. I hate snakes with every fiber of my soul. I told my wife that I love running out on those trail, but the first time I saw a snake would be the last time I ran out there. So I've got to find some new running loops, or get a lot braver due to the situation.

The worst part about it is that the last two weeks the vegetation has grown up so high that its hard to see the trail and I'll be almost on top of one of the stupid things before ever seeing it. Bad, Bad news for me.

After that my heart rate went through the roof for the next 5 miles and I hardly would run because I was trying to slow down and watch for more. Then once I got out of enemy territory I was able to stride it out again.

Good work on 61 miles for the week. Keep it up. Regarding taper for the half-marathon. For this one, I would recommend starting it on Wednesday with 8, then 6 on Thursday, and 5 on Friday. Throw in a mile or two at half marathon pace on each of those days to be mentally prepared for the race.

From SuperFly on Mon, May 01, 2006 at 07:41:55

Thanks for the advice.

From d-enz on Mon, May 01, 2006 at 08:43:21

I am pretty sure you can register for the half marathon on active.com. I just registered at classic sports in Hurricane, but that is close to where I live so it was easier, plus I saved the $3 on the internet fee. You should be able to run a pretty good time on this course. I felt pretty good Saturday afternoon, hopefully there won't be much wind this Saturday morning. There was quite a bit of wind the other day.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 01, 2006 at 15:27:52

Note that in the past the Hurricane half-marathon had a short course. My friend Mike West won it I believe in 2004 in 1:14. He was not in shape to run 1:14 at that time on an out and back course. More likely 1:17. So I would guess half a mile short. Press a bit on the race director to get the course certified, or at least properly measured.

Total Distance

Did my 3.5 mile morning run.

Then a 12 mile run in the afternoon. This was a lot of miles for one day for me so I took it slow. Plus I went out at about 4:45 pm so it was still close to 90 outside. I pulled an old runners trick and cut into the golf course to grab a drink of water. It tasted so good the first time that I found anouther one about a mile later. I'm down to 155.5 the lowest I've been since runing at UVSC in 2001. I really don't want to lose much more. In fact I need to start lifting a little to build my upper body. Trying to find the time or energy to lift has been an issue.

HI. That is one heck of a first marathon. Anyway just my 2 cents Re: Lifting. 2 X's a week 30 minutes each time is sufficient to build strength & see notivable results after 6-8 weeks in your upper body. I enjoy lifting weights and actually am cutting back from 3-4 times to 2 times a wek to get more miles in... Just like putting the mile in get to the gym & put the reps in...

From wildbull on Tue, May 02, 2006 at 09:27:12

Holy Moly. shoe man. talk about putting on the miles. Don't expect to get much bulk from lifting. running tends keep you slim. you will gain some strength.

How tall are you?

From SuperFly on Tue, May 02, 2006 at 10:14:30

5 feet 10 and one half inch tall

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 02, 2006 at 11:49:51

You are exactly as tall as me. My weight is 140 after a hard run in the heat, and normally 145. However my arm bones are very thin. So I'd say unless you have very thick bones, you are probably still on the high end in weight for a marathoner.

From SuperFly on Tue, May 02, 2006 at 12:05:20

I do have bigger bone mass, and a pretty thick muscal mass for a marathoner. I know if I keep training like this I'll continue to lose weight. However its not a priority any more. If it happens it happens. Before I stressed about it and ate to lose weight. Now the only thing I have to lose it muscal and pride.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 02, 2006 at 20:59:07

Just train hard and eat right - no junk, lots of quality foods. Your body then will automatically pick the most optimal weight.

A.M. Loop @ 3.5.

Went out for a easy run (I thought). I had planned on doing 7 miles (max) but ended up going up this sandy trail that was hard to run on and cutting into my big loop trail. So I did 8.5 out in the 90-degree heat. The heat didn't really bother me. I just ate a really bad lunch and it was wreaking havoc in my stomach. I had the dry heaves around the 3-mile mark. I wish I could have just puked and got it out of there. After the 4.5-mile mark I started feeling a little better. My muscles, joints, and the rest of my body feel great. I have developed a blister on the little tow of my right foot. It hurts. I've got to dry it up so it won't be a factor in the half marathon this weekend.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, May 03, 2006 at 22:09:55

What did you eat for lunch?

90-degree heat + a run has a tendency to reveal what foods you should not be eating at all, and especially when it is hot.

From SuperFly on Thu, May 04, 2006 at 07:46:08

I didn't need the run under the sun to tell me that what I had for lunch was bad. Two slices of hospital pizza, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green Gatorade, Oreo brownie. I should have skipped the pizza and brownie.

I had gone into the race only wanting to best 1:25 so I beat my goal by around almost 5 min. I felt like I ran a good race, no major issues. I did do have 2 blisters one on each foot that messed with my stride a little but nothing too much.

At mile 7 I felt like I was starting to cramp up, but just then we crested the hill and started to bail off down the other side at what felt like a sprint. Then after that I started forgeting about the pain and got pumped to hang on to my place, and try and catch one more racer.

I ended up 1st in the 25-29 yr old division, and everyone got rosted by Hobbie Call who ran a smoking 1:06 and some change.

A good race, and it gives me more confidence to go out and run even faster times.

If my time was 1:20 at the Hurricane I think I can run a really good Hobble Creek race in Aug. This course has the tag line "she's fast, but she aint easy" its true. There are some pretty tought hills. Including the last one that is about a mile long during the 12th mile of the race.

Clyde:

Good work on the race. Unfortunately, my apprehensions about the length of the course have been confirmed. Based on Hobbie's time, I'd say it was about 0.5 mile short, which would give you about 1:23. Hobbie can possibly run 1:06 on a perfectly flat course, but he needs competition to do so, and a few races with competition prior to that to get used to hurting for an hour. On a course with rolling hills and no elevation drop, I would expect for him 1:08 with competition, and 1:09-1:10 without.

Can you find somebody who has a GPS and run the course again to get a more accurate measurement?

After we get the accurate measurement, I can give you an idea of what you should expect in Hobblecreek.

From SuperFly on Mon, May 08, 2006 at 11:58:58

I'll have to find out with a gps. However this is a different course than the one that was a out and back course a few years ago.

As far as what Hobbie can run. I think now he can run the time he did with out competition.

Within as little as 2 miles of the race he was gone... and had seperated himself from the rest of the field by almost half a mile. He's looking very, very fast.

From SuperFly on Mon, May 08, 2006 at 12:04:27

This course also has a pretty good elevation drop. The first 3 miles are all down hill, then from mile 7- 10 its really down hill, but not too steep. I was able to really stride down the worst part.

From Steve Hooper on Mon, May 08, 2006 at 14:13:47

Hey Clyde,

Once again great job on the race!

With only being 3 weeks out from running Boston, It may of had an effect on why you felt like you were starting to cramp at only 7 miles out. Also, you recently jumped-up your training the last week and a half as well. How did your muscles feel at the end of the race?

Good job, keep it up!

From SuperFly on Mon, May 08, 2006 at 14:16:34

My muscles felt o.k. at the end. However I didn't have any kick left. I had to just stay in the same gear as I passed the 4th place guy and 40 yards later or so he passed me back...I just stayed in 4th gear and couldn't shift.

I did not get up and do a morning run because I still felt kind of stiff from Saturday. So after work I pushed and pulled out 6 miles and back home. I've had better runs, thats for sure. Kind of stiff, and half way through I got dehydrated in the heat. Lost 6lbs of fluid in that one run. I have a pretty good scale and was 161.0 (in the buff) before the run and 155.0 after. I like droping pounds but not like that. It's the time of year where I need to start stashing water along the course so I can hydrate myself.

From Steve Hooper on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 11:20:36

6 lbs in one run, that's crazy. It's good to see you got out and you're able to put the miles in after the Half.

When I was living back in Sacramento, CA I had a coach, Al Baeta told us during the summer months (90F+ heat) to always carry a water bottle with us and sip-it during the day and measure our hydration by making sure our urin always clear.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 13:08:39

I've dropped about 5 pounds on the run before on a hot day, and looking at me you would wonder where I found those 5 pounds to drop. Nothing to worry about, unless you felt bad after the run. Also note that dehydration is not your only enemy in the heat - you can lose electrolytes. Good work on keeping up the mileage.

Actually being able to drop 5 pounds on the run might be a good sign, especially if you felt decent at the end - the body might be learning to stash extra water.

From SuperFly on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 13:42:32

Thanks guys for the info. I felt good considering... It wasn't a big deal I've done it before. The only thing that made this unique was that I hadn't drank much all day prior to the run, and in effort to see how low I could go on the scale I didn't drink anything before I got off the scale after the run. It was just a pride thing. Stupid, I know.

Went on my big loop run. The first mile and a half my calves were as hard as a rock. I couldn't keep any kind of a pace. It didn't help that the first 3 miles are some good uphill. Then after I got to the top of the hill I finally started to enjoy the run and my calves started to loosen up. With only a half mile left my wife pulled up to the side of me in the car and at that point I just decided to get in so instead of 12 I only got 11.5 miles in. I didn't feel to bad about it.

Overall I felt the run was good. I'm not sure why my calves were so tight at the first. It could be that on Sunday I was sitting for hours at airports and on planes. Then on Monday back at work I was in a meeting for nine and a half hours just sitting there. With all that sitting- then going out on a run... maybe thats why. Or I could have just been sore from my last tread mill run on Saturday night in NYC. I ran it at a good speed and tread mills are harder on your calves.?

Who knows...

Comments
From wildbull on Tue, May 16, 2006 at 09:21:24

good work out. your probably right about the tread mill. it is harder on the calves. I guess you evaded getting mugged in central park. they probably just could not catch you. your getting in 11 to 12 miles a day with one work out.

Frank Shorter

You can actually suffer a little bit more going slowly than when you're going really fast. A faster marathon might even be easier than a slow one, in terms of what it takes out of you mentally.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 23, 2006 at 12:43:31

What Frank Shorter says is very true. That is why I tell people to work on their 5 K speed before they even try a marathon. A 3 hour marathon hurts a lot less than a 4 hour one.

In this life we all find our breaking points from time to time. I found one of mine last night. Came home from work around 4 and thought about running from my house through Washington fields over to my inlaws home. It sounded good so I told my wife and she said she could pick me up over there after. Well 100 degrees + 10 miles - no hydro of any kind= Superfly almost going to the ER.

I had to stop and walk 3-4 times as I was dizzy and finding it hard to stay on my feet. I told my wife I wish I'd had a panic button that I could have pushed and had here come get me around 6 miles into the run. Because of my pride, I made myself finish, not a very smart move.

After last night theres a new rule in our home. No running when its 100 outside. I'm just gonna have to wait until after 6:30 or 7pm to go out after work.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, May 19, 2006 at 11:06:56

In my experience, the benefits of running in the heat end at about 5 miles of jogging. After that, the need to recover from the heat stress consumes the recovery benefits from the workout. So when hot, jog a bit, then go more when it cools off.

To answer your question. I do not think it would be wise for you to run DesNews. It is not worth the risk. Halfs are good, the more the better. How accurate is your measurement of the pace? If it is, it is a very good sign you can go out and run 6:30 in 95 degrees on a regular run for 12 miles. I think this means you are ready for at least 2:50 in St. George, if not faster.

From SuperFly on Tue, Jun 13, 2006 at 15:01:29

6:30 p.m. was the time of day. I wasn't even keeping track of the pace. The trail I ran last night isn't one you keep a pace chart on. Very rocky, lots of hills, up and down, a mile and a half at least of sand running...very difficult, but fun course, other than the snakes!

Way to go on the race Clyde. That is a pretty good time compared to the 10K races you did before Boston. Sounds like the course was pretty fast and some decent competition. I wanted to run the 10K race, but I knew Sunny would be having the baby at anytime so I didn't even sign up, it was a good thing I didn't. My training was going pretty good at the beginning of the week and but since Thursday I've been pretty busy with the baby and entertaining family. My training should get back on schedule next week. I am planning on doing the 10K race up in Provo on the 4th of July and still interested in doing that Bryce Canyon Half Marathon.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 14:45:54

Clyde - this is a great improvement. To measure how great, we need to know the elevation profile of the course. If the elevation profile is not available otherwise, but you remember how the course went, you can chart it at gmap-pedometer.com.

Even assuming the absolute craziest elevation drop, I see no reason why you could not run a sub-2:40 in St. George if you keep up your consistent 60-70 miles a week.

Dustin - 4th of July in Provo is finally going to get certified, so we will be able to tell a lot from your performance.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 13:05:43

Did a good run early Saturday morning with the Club. Ran nice and easy for the first 9 or so miles then started to up the tempo the rest of the way in. Felt good until the last mile and a half then stated slowing down. Raced a guy riding a Mt. bike for about 3 and a half miles up the hill. I trailed him for a whle then passed him until we split the trail and went on our ways. He said to me " its hard for me to keep up with you... and I'm on a bike". So after that I felt like the pace wasn't too bad. Because he said he rides 16 miles a day....

Glad to up the miles this week and feel good along the way.

7-mile morning run.

I had a dream last night that I woke up at about 8 a.m. on the day of the St. George Marathon. In my dream I was just doing normal Saturday morning things and I talked to some guy outside of my house and he said "well they are on their way." I said, "who's on their way." "The marathoners," he said. At that moment my whole body went limp and my mind race to realize I'd slept in. I ran in the house and sobbed. Then at that moment the rain came from nowhere and wind like I'd never seen before. Then with in seconds I felt comforted and decided that if it had been bad weather then it wasn't the best circumstances for me to run a PR marathon and achieve my running goals....

Anyways as you can see this was a bad dream, well a nightmare. I hope it means nothing. I'll have every alarm clock in the house set this year just to make sure, and as far as the weather... I guess we are all hoping for good running weather this year for the STGM.

Ran out and back for 6 more miles. Before I left I felt great, better than I remember feeling anytime the last few weeks. However about 3 miles into the run I died. It was still around a 100 and my energy level just got zapped. Had to turn around and come home with my tail between my legs.

Drove from my house up the Marathon road here in St. George. The 20 mile mark just happend to fal at the top of Veyo hill. So I started out from the crest of the hill to the top of Dameron Valley its about 3 and a half to 4 mile climb. I ran this part really slow, just couldn't get going. Then once I started the down hills got into a good tempo and came to my halfway point at 1:05.16 that was at Winchestor hills area. Then started my last leg and ran fine until the light where I cut up and hit the skyline drive road. From there it was all very difficult. I just wanted to quit. Still ran a negative split and loged 1:02.20 for my last leg. Total for the run was 2:07.36 ish . I was a little bumb with the time really wanted to run 20 miles at or under 2hrs. This run tells me there is alot of work to do. My only disclaimer is that I haven't tappered off any this week or last to get ready for this run, in fact I've jumped my mileage up. Good thing its June and not September.

This would have given you a 2:47 marathon if you had kept 6:25 pace for another 10 K, and 2:57 if you had jogged it at 8:00 pace. This is consistent with your 10 K performance. Note that a 20 mile long run is going to be quite a bit slower than your 20 mile split in a marathon due to the lack of tapering and competition.

This afternoon was tricky- it wasn't as cool as it looked. Even thought it was overcast it was still around 100 and I talked myself into going out at 6:30 p.m. About 6 miles into the run started to feel dizzy and weak- I was by the hospital so I stopped by my office and called my wife to have her pick my up on the way home. After getting a drink and walking it out I continued on hoping she would show up and rescue me. But I made it home before she finished her stuff at work. Bad run... but glad to get the miles in.

There are a couple of articles in this month's Runner's World about running in the heat. It amazes me that you can run in the heat that you do. I complain if it gets over 75 degrees.

From SuperFly on Fri, Jul 07, 2006 at 09:37:48

Good afternoon run with the club. I had a side ache for the first 3-4 miles. I've had one the last 3 runs...don't get them very much; don't know why I'm getting them now. I've got to find a fix.

After the side ache went away I was able to get into a nice grove and felt really good. Pushed the pace from time-to-time along the route.

Its nice to get out and run with the guys. I find myself always pushing it harder when I know they are right behind me breathing fire down my neck.

For me this has actually happened before, and in a very interesting situation. It was in the pre 9/11 days, and I was still not a US citizen. I was in the lead of a half-marathon on the Hill Airforce Base, and I missed the turn. Shortly I saw some hangars and lots of equipment, so I figured out I was lost, so I just ran to the finish the way I intuitively felt would get me there. How about that - a Russian spy lost on an American air force base?

I ended up adding about 0.2 of a mile or so, but still won the race. Who knows - that distance might have needed a 0.2 mile addition anyway - my time was 1:16, and it felt like I had really run a 1:16.

Got up and did a short 5 mile run this morning before work. My miles suck for this week but I did want to taper off to race the half on Saturday. I may run a couple miles tonight when I get to Bryce Canyon just to help me stay relaxed.

Got 2 miles in tonight with Dustin.

Total Distance
16.00

Did the Bryce Canyon half. one mile warm up.

The race went pretty good. I ran a 1:15.20...the seconds may be off. Finished in 5th place overall. 4th place in mens and 3rd in my age class. Yes I got "chicked". She was pretty dang fast. She passed me on mile marker 3 or so and throughout the race I thought I was going to catch her... I just never did. Same girl who won the ladies St. George Marathon last year.

I ran pretty good for most of the race- around mile's 8-9 I started having thoughts that it was beyond me to maintain this pace. However in a mile or so I was feeling better. The course was marked good, I hope it was pretty close in distance.

Overall felt good about the race. The $100 cash prize for 4th place in men's was a nice cherry on the top...

The elevation drop was around 2000 ft from 7,500 ft or so to 5,500 ft or so.

Ran two miles with my wife later in the night. Feeling pretty sore!

1:15 - I must say I pretty impressed with how well both you and Dustin did. The miles and training are really starting to show.

Make sure to take some extra time each day during this week and devote to stretching. That down hill was probably a silent killer, but great training for St. George.

Keep it up!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 14:47:54

Good work. The race results are here.

Your time is listed at 1:15:28. This converts to 2:44 in St. George, if we assume the course is equivalent to Hobblecreek. I think it is probably a minute slower, which would give you 2:42. The race shows your 10 K speed carries to the half-marathon. When that it is the case, it is quite rare to lose more than 5 minutes in the marathon off the prediction unless you experience some major disaster.

It is good that you have gotten to the level where getting "chicked" in a race with prize money becomes something you can avoid. It might be a good idea to run with Devra in St. George, and then see if you can drop her on the last mile.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 11:56:34

I think your picture provides some insights on why your legs are sore. You are way up in the air, so when you come down, you hit the ground hard having a lot of height to fall from. Especially on a downhill course.

However, I would not worry about it too much - give yourself 2-3 years of consistent training, and the issue will fix itself.

From steve on Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 14:34:18

I think when you're racing on a course with a drop like the Bryce Half Marathon I don't personally see how you couldn't be "in the air" and "come down hard".click here for picture.

For every step you take you could be dropping 3+ inches. The only way to prepare your body for that type of elevation drop is to train on it.

Google earth said from the road up it was .9 so I'm thinking it was just over 10 last night.

Then on the way back we didn't run all out but clipped right along at a pretty fast pace all the way back to the park.

Really good workout. I made it through the workout a lot better than I thought I could due to how sluggish my legs have felt all week.

I still think it would be good for me to do a nice easy longer run on Saturday and skip the fast downhill 10k race. I want to go race so bad but just have this feeling like I shouldn't.

I would recommend running the 10 K as a training run, and then filling up the miles at an easy pace afterwards. But I suppose this is too late.

Racing frequently to prepare for a marathon is a great idea as long as you do not taper for those races, and as long as you are able to bounce back into your regular training right away.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 04, 2006 at 14:16:39

Feeling trashed at first, but then feeling better is a very good sign when doing high mileage. My theory on that is that your body enters the state of perpetual rest from the stress of training, and it starts taking it a while to get mobilized for action. So this means, in essence, that your body knows how to rest, which is the key to building fitness.

Hey Clyde, Way to go with the speed-work. Next time you go give me a call.

I really need to start doing some speed.

Are you feeling tight at all today?

From Superfly on Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 09:24:49

Steve- I'm not too bad this morning. I went out for 7 this moring and seemed to feel pretty go.

Hope to get a good workout tonight with the club.

I don't have any saved runs from that link.

Anyways see ya tonight.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 11:00:05

Good splits. Is there a 5 K race anywhere nearby whose length you can trust? It would be nice to see what you can do in a 5 K right now.

From Superfly on Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 11:15:09

I think there is one down here this weekend for the fair. I just don't know that I want to run it. There are some fast 5k guys that will hand me my butt, and I don't know if my ego can take it. I'll think about it.

From d-enz on Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 12:14:39

Good job on the workout, I must have missed your wife, I'll have to get my stuff maybe tomorrow sometime. I don't think I will be there to run with the club tonight. The high school has their first meet tonight up in Cedar around 6:00 pm. I have been struggling running this week, really feeling tired and unmotivated. Maybe the next few days will go a little better, and once school starts next week I'll get back into a better groove.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Aug 14, 2006 at 14:05:27

Clyde - ego problems are not good. They have killed many good runners in the past, and will kill more. I hope you are not going to be the next victim.

You should not be afraid of your competition even if they are stronger. The first step to becoming as fit as they are is remove the fear and the feeling of inferiority. In fact, you may want to try going out with somebody a class above just to see what it feels like, and then hang on to the finish once/if you get dropped.

8.5 miles p.m.

Did a easy morning run. Felt really relaxed and fresh from the rest day. Pushed the pace of the morning run from the halfway point back home.

Meet with Steve tonight for a speed workout at the track. A side note- I ate a thick PB and honey sandwich about 2 hours before the workout and thought it would be good to go by the time we started… Well it spent most of the run trying to come back out. On the good side we showed up to a quiet, wind free track that was a lot more relaxing to run on than in front of all the football people.

My wife came to time us, and she brought our little puppy to bark at us as we ran by.

We ran 2 miles down to the track to warm up.

Splits:

1. 2.29 1.14/1.15

2. 2.39 1.20/1.19

3. 2.36 1.21/1.15

4. 2.38 1.21/1.17

5. 2.38 1.19/1.19

6. 2.39 1.16/1.23

As one can see the first 800 was way too fast making us pay the price on the rest of the 8’s.

One a good point my goal was to run all 6 under 2.40- and by the skin of my teeth I just made it. The temperature was 98 when we finished. There was no wind, which was nice for running, but not so good for cooling us off. The air was just sitting there stagnate and hot.

Happy to have run my goal, although I feel if we’d have ran the first 800 slower we could have finished a little stronger. Overall a good workout, I need one of those a week to gear me up for St. George.

It would be a good idea to find a downhill stretch and practice some downhill running at a fast pace between now and St. George. Be cautious, though - downhill overdone can get you injured.

All the training you have done the last four months will pay off. too many people try to improve or get better the last couple of weeks when they should be tapering and letting their body heal. Have you had a chance to burn my cd yet? how am i going to keep up with the Superfly in the marathon if i don't have his music?

From Chad on Tue, Sep 26, 2006 at 13:54:52

Clyde,

Sometimes things seem to go a little wacky in the lead up to a marathon, so don't worry too much about feeling like you're running "for the first time." At this point, the hay is in the barn so to speak, and you've got no shortage of hay. Throw some strides into a couple of runs and that will remind your body about your rhythm.

From Superfly on Wed, Sep 27, 2006 at 11:20:35

Thanks for the luv guys- Chad I think your right about the strides. Running a few of them seem to bring me back to rhythm.

Bill-I'll bring a cd for you on Thursday night.

This morning I ran an easy 7 up into the desert over to the water tank and down the paved road. Did around a mile and a half surge during the run.

Then this evening I decided to get one more hard workout in. So I drove over to Webb hill and did the hill 3x. It is around a 9% grade dirt road that is one mile up.

Did .6 warm up and .6 cool down.

Good workout. Legs feeling it pretty good- not worried still have 10 days left to refuel.

Hey Clyde

Sounds like a good workout last night. You'll have to read my workout last Thursday I did that ladder workout that Chad has done a few times, pretty good workout. Felt pretty happy with my 5K race and more pleased with the 10.5 mile run we did after, felt real comfortable and we were running at a pretty good pace. I'm still thinking that under 2:50 is a reasonable goal for me. I'm definately going to kill my previous PR from St. George and Boston! What time are you planning to run the first half in?

Clyde,

I have a friend in New York that is coming to run St.George. He has wrote a program for elevation changes and splits for each mile. So far it has only been a test with elevations based off the webs course map. Have you logged any of the mile elevation drops on a garmin or know what they are? If you do have something easy to look at could you comment back and I'll send you his email. I think it would be fun to look at. This year when I ran Boston they had a predictor that told you your splits based on the course to acheive a goal time.

Thanks BC

I just put a message continued on our discussion about running together on my blog.

but here is the gist of it -

I think I can help you set up for a 2:40.

I've never had a problem going strong at first, just finishing. So we'll go out and hit 1:18 and then bring it home and I'll go with you as long as I can.

I was just checking out the pace calculater Bill posted to Dustin and it calculated that we should hit 1:21 for the first half, but I have always been one to run good while you feel good. So I think we should go out with the 1:18 in mind.

Did an easy run this morning. Feeling a little antsy. The men are healthy, strong and ready to fight all this waiting around is just building up the hype. I may need to hire a sports shrink in the future if I keep running marathons. I couldn't sleep at all last night, and when I did I woke up to three drama filled dreams about running. One of these nightmares actually had me crying in my sleep- which woke my wife. I'll be glad to (hopefully) get this breakthrough marathon over so next time it's not such a big jump.

Do not put too much pressure on yourself to PR or hit a particular time goal. Just go out and run your best. Ironically, the best marathons are run with a dormant competitive attitude. Mike Kirk is great at it. He does not even care until he gets to 14 miles.

Good luck. I think you will do great. Your training is going to pay off big time. A huge PR is coming...

Race: St. George Marathon (26.2 Miles) 00:02:36, Place overall: 17, Place in age division: 5
Total Distance
26.20

Wow where to start-

What a great day. I’ve been so stressed. A summer full of training paid off big time this morning.

Ran a PR of 2:36.12 more than a 22 min PR. I won the Silver Shoe award (Southern Utah’s fastest man at this race) this includes a new Nordic Track treadmill, bread for a year from Great Harvest and a few other little things. 17th overall, 5th in age 25-29. Thanks to everyone along the way, I’m humbled and feel so blessed about todays events.

Started the race of kind of in a daze- just running along not really focusing on anything in particular. In doing so I lost track of Dave Holt who I had planned on running with.

Now I’m on my own. Passed Chad and his friend and just pushed into Veyo drafting off of unknowns along the way.

Then at the hill everyone kind of slowed way down and I couldn’t take it so I lead a group of 5 up the hill. When on top finally bright enough to put on sun glasses.

Then worked on the climb out of Dammeron Valley. Pushed it a little hard on the climb just trying to get it over with. Hit the half in 1:20.20 (give or take). Soon after the half Dave Holt and Logan Fielding came up from behind and picked me up. I had slowed down not paying attention and my quads where starting to get stiff- I thought this was going to be trouble later in the race.

The three of us clipped along down Snow Canyon and into Winchester Hills and we started coming up on Jose Martinez another St. George resident. Going up the hill by the overpass in Winchester I started to worry about the situation. All four of us running right there were from St. George and eligible to win the Silver Shoe. I had to try and separate myself from these guys and put as much distance as possible between us as I could before the final miles. So I pushed on passing Jose and really trying to focus on proper form, running as efficient as I could, making every stride count.

When I came down the hill I passed two others and pushed down Diagonal St. At the corner I looked back to see what kind of breathing room I might have created ( a little). With one mile to go I was at 2:29.30 and knew I could break 2:40 and possibly win the shoe. But at this point I was running alone- no one in front or behind me for 30 seconds or so.

So I just tried to hang on and finish. No strong surge at the end, just crossed the line and happy to be there. I could go on for a while with this but better stop here.

Good job to the entire St. George Running club, yes you too Dave your one of us now. So you better start coming. Especially good job to Dustin for putting together a really good PR for himself.

I forgot to mention a big thanks to Sasha for the blog. I owe 10 min of my PR to the help I've gotten from fastrunningblog.com

Three cheers for Sasha!

Great job again Clyde! I can't believe you also won a treadmill that is pretty sweat. Also, the bread for the year will come in handy. It is rewarding to see that all of our hard training this summer paid off. Now that we have had these break through races, it makes me excited to keep training and to try to get to the next level. Hope your recovery goes good. Boy I was hurting pretty bad after the race, dizzy and not all there, feeling a little better tonight.

The sky's the limit, Clyde. Keep it up (and keep posting!).

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Oct 09, 2006 at 11:35:53

Clyde - congratulatoins on a huge PR. The work has paid off. Thanks for the suggestions on the blog promotion. I am collecting ideas and implementing them as the time slots for development are becoming available.

Next year I think you can go under 2:30, with the qualifier not being out of the question. However, I do not think it is possible to hit a qualifier in St. George without being able to run a flat 5 K in 15:30 or faster. You will need to dig that speed out of you - you have it, it is just dormant. Rest a couple of months after this race jogging easy, but keeping a reasonable mileage, and then start working on brutal speed and holding it.

From Dave Holt on Mon, Oct 09, 2006 at 12:22:58

Hey Clyde, Congratulations again.

What an experience. What I loved is that you, unlike me, had no doubt that you would be able to hit your time. Great workouts and positive thinking will pay off everytime.

2.5 easy miles with my wife Mik’L. Legs feeling stiff after sitting from an extended time, but after stretching they feel pretty good.

I decided to write down my food intake and training stuff the last couple days before the marathon because I had absolutely no problems with my stomach or going potty during the race. In fact I didn’t have to go #2 from the time at the starting line porta potty until sometime Sunday afternoon.

Anyways I’ll find this info useful before my next race and maybe others might benefit from it as well.

Thursday Afternoon

Ran with the club 5.5 miles with one mile at 5.20 pace at 7p.m.

Came home and ate:

1 can salmon (like a can of tuna, but salmon)

½ an avocado

1 bowl of noodles (from Costco or Albertsons) like ramen noodles but in its own bowl

1 mixed 16oz cup of Cytomax from powder

1 banana

In bed by 9:30 p.m. and watched TV until 10:20 then tried to sleep

Friday

3 mile run @ 9 a.m.

Ate:

Bowl of Honey nut Cheerios

1 banana

1 mixed drink of Cytomax

Got ready and went to Marathon Expo at Noon

Drank a 32 oz bottle of Cytomax during the day while out and about

Went to lunch at 2 p.m. at Samaria 21

Ate:

Chicken Teriyaki Bowl (chicken and noodles)

A little tofu soup and some salad

2 ½ sushi (California roll style)

Bowl of white rice

Water with lemon

We messed around town and went home at 5 p.m.

Hot Bath

Prep for run (all my stuff together)

Ate: @ 7 p.m.

1 Bowl of noodles (not the whole thing)

1 apple

Drank water

Watched “Without limits”

In bed by 9 p.m.

Day of the race

Up at 4 a.m. sharp

2 pieces of wheat toast with very little butter

1 banana

½ a vanilla power bar

1 mixed cup of cytomax from powder

Trip to toilet at home

Shower and shave * I like to feel fresh for a race

Get everything ready and out of the house by 4:45 to meet people at rec center by 5 a.m.

Ride up in van with some of the Japanese delegates

Ate on ride up:

1 more banana

Other half of power bar

Sipped on more cytomax

At starting line by around 6 a.m.

Stretched, talked with others, porta potty 2 times before the race. One trip because I had to go and one trip about 15 min to start just to make sure we were clear for take off.

Strip off warm cloths and we are off

While running I had bottles mixed with Endurance fuel (GNC product) and plain flavored GU’s at mile markers 11 and 19.

That’s about it. I’ll definitely follow something like this in the future and would have paid a good price for something like this in the past. If you have any other questions about this just ask.

Thanks for posting this. I've had to take bathroom breaks the last 2 marathons costing me almost 1 minute in each. I think my problem is eating too much the night before (looks like your Friday night meal was pretty small). I did set PR's in both so maybe the extra rest helped. Maybe I should employ the "Gallow-pooping" method in all my races.

From Superfly on Tue, Oct 10, 2006 at 12:43:38

Andy- I tryed to eat a pretty good size meal early in the day on Friday (at lunch) then at night just enough to top me off. I really think this helped. The apple the night before made sure I was going to go early Saturday morning and get everything that needed to be out- out.

I thought coming down I would be able to pick up the pace a little more, but I still was struggling. I haven't really given much thought to running valley of fire, I guess I should think about it. It might be good to just get some more experience with marathon racing. Did you see my post where my friend won the Denver Marathon in 2:28?

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 18, 2006 at 13:38:54

Clyde:

Never push your training outside of the natural limits imposed by your current condition for any reason. Running is not school, cramming does not work, it only gives injuries. If you want to run Valley of Fire, do it as a relaxing tempo run riding off your St. George condition. Better yet, pace Bill on the first half, then see if you can still win the race.

My only issue is a sore ankle that I rolled on Mondays run. I need to ice it and it should be good to go.

OK I can go throw up now!

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Oct 19, 2006 at 13:07:30

Clyde - I made a similar mistake in my training right after St. George in 2003 to the one you are making now. You think I would have learned, but I managed to get started in the same direction this year after DesNews. Fortunately this time, my frequent control tempo runs have detected the problem, and I was able to make the necessary adjustments to avoid a complete disaster.

It is ok to train hard after a marathon, but even if you feel good you should not do it quite full-throttle. There is some hidden damage that takes a couple of months to heal.

In your case, I would recommend 8+4 schedule as a rule, with a couple of tempo runs a week always on the same course that are long enough to discover problems, but short enough to not overtrain you. For me, 3 miles works very well.

From BILL on Thu, Oct 19, 2006 at 13:45:16

Clyde,

I agree with Sasha. I know you excited about your past marathon results. Back off a little and enjoy. It is hard because your peaking right now and you want to keep it up, But an injury would set you back 2 months or more! from the mouth of two or more witness.... contain the beast within until race day. on that day woman will scream, children will cry and men will groan at your very site:):)

Good work this week.

Total Distance
15.00

7.8 miles in the morning

7.2 miles in the evening

Morning run was a little taxing. Calves were really tight the first 4 miles. I stopped and tryed to loosen them up and it helped- the rest of the run felt good.

Evening run was GOOD. Every once in a while you grind the gears and find that one gear where your just floating. Tonight I went out for a 5 mile run and was day dreaming and missed the exit. So I added anouther 2 or so. Running felt effortless, good fast stride.

Starting to come around.

Both runs felt good. My ankle is still sore from rolling it a few days ago. My food intake the last week and a half is out of control. It's not helping me lose the 4lbs I gained the week after the marathon. I would like to get back to race weight by next Saturday for the Butch Cassidy 10k. If I can continue to feel good between now and then I think I'll be able to PR in the 10k- I guess we will see.

Clyde, Obviously there are many factors, but what time are you shooting for at Butch?

From Superfly on Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 13:03:51

Well I'd like to go sub 32:45- but we will see. The race starts out downhill for a couple miles and then rolls on dirt the rest of the way. So I'm not sure a PR is doable. But if I feel good the day of the race I'll go for broke for the first time all year because I'm not trying to get ready for a racel. I'll gamble a little and push it.

From Superfly on Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 13:17:22

Foot in my mouth-

I just looked up the times from last year and Hobie ran it in 33:30 or so. It must not be as fast as I thought it was. New goal time around 34-35 ish.

Although if Hobie is there I may try and jump on with him and see how far I can hold it. Although that could cost me later on in the race.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 15:55:42

Just ask him to pace you for two miles. He does not mind a slow warm-up. In fact, it would be great if you could start training with him. He lives in La Verkin - check to see if he is in the phone book, if not look up Shane Clinger, he would know his number.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 15:56:30

High food intake is OK as long as it is good quality.

From Dave Holt on Thu, Oct 26, 2006 at 11:52:00

Well this race was actually my first 10K after my 9th grade cross-country season and I ran it in 38 something (soooooo long ago!) If you are warmed up well and use the first few miles on the road's downhill you can set yourself up for a good time. I doubt Hobie had much of a challenge or need to go that hard last year.

Run went good. From Dixie Center over to Bloomington and around the loop there, then under the freeway up into Bloomington Hills and around Webb Hill down River Road to the trail back to Dixie Center. Good 12.5 mile loop.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Nov 01, 2006 at 16:08:34

How was the distance measured, and was it flat?

Were you trying to be nice to Steve on the second and third repetition, or were you slowing down by yourself naturally?

From Superfly on Wed, Nov 01, 2006 at 16:17:26

Steve measured the distance.

I slowed down a little on the second and then on the third I ran the first lap by myself because Steve was catching his breath.

It's not flat. At the marathon finish line your run around that big block/ park. Some uphill- some down, nothing really that flat.

I didn't have a watch on so Steve was yelling me the times, but they could be wrong.

Wow.

Let's see- Race started and I went out pretty hard but not all out. A couple SUU runners and Holt were out in the lead. I rolled through the first mile and a half then started to really feel cramped (all over the legs) then around mile 2 Steve Olsen comes knocking at my door and we run together for about a half and he starts to go, and my brain says we can go with- but the body can't do it. Just couldn't get out of the hole today. Run the next 2 or so really cramped and then after mile 4 or so I finally start to feel better but by then the damage is already done. Everyone is long gone.

35:31 4th overall. Pretty sad that earlier this year I held 5:30 pace for a half marathon and today I struggle to hit a 5:40 pace in a 10k. I guess I'm just not ready to be racing fast yet.

After todays race I felt like my body and mind need a rest from the race prep/ training. So I'm not going to run the Valley of Fire Marathon in November. I'd like to enjoy the wrestling season this year. It's my 5th year as the assistant wrestling coach at Dixie High. This year we've got some good kids that we've been working with for the last few and I expect good things. So I will aim my attention that direction through the winter and try and improve my core fitness while trying to keep my weight down.

Did a mile warm up and a few at the hotel in Phoenix.

Any who- the race was just o.k. I wasn't pumped by any means, but wasn't really bumbed out. Holt ran a good race. He transformed into a retro 80's guy with his new business in the front, party in the back hair cut and classic old nike flats- And a head band. It was pretty funny.

We had to bail pretty quick after the race to catch a flight to Phoenix.

Had the honor of enjoying an In-and-Out burger in Vegas before we went to the airport. It hit the spot.

Hey Clyde

Sorry the race didn't go as well as planned. It is probably better I didn't get signed up in time, I was really hurting today on my run, still feeling pretty weak from being sick most of the week. Hope you can enjoy a few days out of town. I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving and the Holidays this year.

From Chad on Sun, Nov 05, 2006 at 10:49:05

Don't get too discouraged, Clyde. Everyone hits a rough patch now and then. You've trained and raced at a very high level for a while and your body probably could use a break. A little rest can go a long way physically and mentally. However, so long as you keep your base fitness intact and you'll continue to get faster for a long time to come and remain the FMD (~Fastest Man in Dixie~).

When we got to the top Holt was a couple blocks back and I thought if I stopped I may not get going again. So I continued on down diagnal street and then to main all the way down to the over pass and back to the Dixie Center.

Overall it was a good run. I felt good until the last mile or half mile then I started to get stiff.

Had a day to do whatever I wanted so I woke up and got ready to do a big run.

I ran the same 20 miler that Bill, Dustin and I ran back on March 25th. According to Dustin's blog we ran it back then at 2:28 or just around 7:25 pace.

Today I went out real easy with the goal to just log the miles. However I hit the halfway point (my in-laws house) at one hour straight up and felt like I had been running pretty smooth and easy. But then I wanted to run the second half as close as I could to the first and try and do the 20 right around 2hrs....Well the second half has a few more hills and I started to lose steam and ended up finishing right around 2:10. Which isnt bad for someone who considers themselves out of shape. It was kind of fun to get out and see where I'm at- at the mid winter point/ without a treadmill.

Felt pretty good and feel good about the time off this winter. By February when I start cranking up the miles I should be right where I want to be to start the 07' year off.

I talked to the guy at Nordic Trac and should have my treadmill in 3-5 days. I ended up spending a little $$$ and upgrading to the Elite modle with a built in TV (for my wife oviously).

Well see how I feel tomorrow on my run to see how I really feel?

I better question might be - How fast can Clyde run on the treadmill. With all the bells-n-whistles I bet it can reach 13-14 mph.

12 is the highest. But I haven't put it that high yet. It feels pretty fast at 9 right now.

Zero miles today. Busy with work things all morning then we beat it down to Vegas to watch the BYU game. Fun game, glad they won a bowl game this decade. Then we stayed down there last night.

Good day. Woke up in Torrey and had Christmas morning with my family then at 10am we drove the 3 hours back to STG and had Christmas with Mik'L's family at around 2pm. Went home around 5pm with our mega stash and I got in a quick 3 miles on the treadmill before we went back to the in-laws house to play games.

I did my water tank loop around 11am and hope to get some more in this afternoon.

My wife gave me a Garmin for Christmas and I've been dieing to run with one. I was really pleased with how close my loop was just from using Google Earth to measure the distance. After my run my "Tool" said I had run 7.08. So I'm looking forward to measuring all my little runs around my house to see how close they are.

6.5 more miles tonight up around Green Spring golf course.

The last half mile was at 2% grade.

To cold and rainy all day to talk myself into going out, although I wanted to go use my new toy.

I did a version of my old "Big loop." Up to the powerline trail. Then over to where the trail meets the Millcreek road- From there I ran up and back to the water house and then down to Green Spring golf course. Then made my way back home.

I wore some trail shoes that are not as light as other shoes, and they picked up alot of mud off the trail that made them even more taxing to lift. I'm starting to love the garmin. Just being able to take off any direction with no worries is nice. I wore the heart rate part today.

Ave heart rate was 164

Yes I'm out of shape.

Took my car in to get some things done so I left from the dealership. Ran from Blackridge up the hill and down into Bloomington and around the loop. Then I went under the freeway and into Bloomington Hills around Webb Hill. I went back up the bike trail over to river road and then took the other trail back down the river to the Dixie Center and then over to Blackridge.

Good run this morning with the STG Running Club. First half was pretty slow. It was real cold and was hard to get going. Picked up the pace the last couple miles to see if I could even run any more.

I put two and two together and came up with- Cold mornings= Slow hard runs.

Glad to put together a pretty good week.

HR- 148 (a lot lower than last couple of days?)
