New Years day run with the Circle and James. Met at Logans house at 6:30 a.m with a chilly 26F. Did Logan's favorite "riding dirty" loop run all over the world and then some. Went to bed last night feeling pretty crappy. Woke up about 2 a.m and felt like I got ran over by a garbage truck... 97 or so times. But for some reason I just didn't want to skip the run today so I left the alarm set. Woke about an hour early to take some cold meds. Never tried that pre run before.

Anyways the run was ok. No one wanted to go hard anyways. So that helped with the pace EZ all day. About mile 16 Dave said he wanted to start the new year off right and then his shirt came off... a mile or so later Logan pulled his... and I'm a sucker for peer preasure so mine came off too with James to follow. We got some good looks from passing cars on a Jan 1st morning running shirtless back to Logans house. Being sick I'm sure it was stupid.... but I can't do much of anything right as of late so- When in Rome. Isn't that what they say?

I didn't see anything about what the temp was.. ?

Hopefully it was cold enough to shock whatever bug you've got out of your system.

Well it was around 26 F when we started before the sun came up. But by the time the shirts came off it was late in the run and out in the sun... could have been 34F or so.:)

I don't know if it shocked it or helped it grow.

Shirts off at 30 degrees, you guys are like crazy football fans (well at least you're moving to stay warm; they just sit and freeze).

Nice run to start your year, now go to bed and kick that illness!

6 miles on the treadmill this morning. Today was the sickest I've felt. When I first got out of bed I decided that I'd just not run at all. But then after about 15 min's I thought a good sweat out indoors might help move the crap out of my system. Felt super yuck almost the entire run. Weight was 151 lbs before and 148 lbs after the 6 miles. So 3 lbs of sweat out and now I can add back 3 lbs of Nyquil.

P.M. 8 miles tonight. Middle B-hills loop extended through the Secret St and into LV. Felt good enough to go run... but pretty much like sh*& while running. Kept the pace honest but it felt like work for the first 3 miles. There was no way I'd have been able to do mile's tonight. Sick of being sick and feeling depressed. Maybe someone could just run me over tomorrow morning. Make it look like an accident:).

Just a funky morning. Woke like I wanted to feel good and start the day off better than some before. Headed out running but my hip hurt like CRAZY and the head cold is still there so I was pretty dizzy. So after only 1.2 out I just decided to turn around and come home. Got home and couldn't call totally off so I jumped on the treadmill after doing a few hip routine stuff. 4 miles on the machine actually felt pretty good. Hip was runnable and again it just felt good to sweat.

Did you know that a Phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of it's predecessor?

P.M. 7 miles around the middle B-hills loop and Secret st finish. 6:37 avg. Hip hurts but I can't stop now.

DC run with the Circle and Stephen. We planned on running the STG half course but after only .5 into the run we'd already taken a different path... Steve's driving:(.  So the half route got all jacked up and we just ran the meat and potatos of it. Then extended back down into Bloomington for that loop and back. Felt pretty flat most of the run. Just been a battle all week with everything. But around mile 16 I was starting to feel antzy and just wanted the run to be done. So worked into a 6:14 on that mile. Then 5:25, 5:30, 5:25 to finish off the last three miles to 20. Did a short .6 cool down around the parking lot. Felt good to hurt myself on the closing miles. Needed that push. Might be kind of getting over the head cold sickness.

Ice loop right around daybreak. It was colder at 23F. Sleep was pathetic last night. Almost just went out for a run at 1 a.m. But then later in the early hours of the morning I did finally doze off. Woke up today and decided I needed to try and take control of the situation a little better. On some ends there's nothing I can do but on others maybe I can try and shift gears or something. Anything might help at this point. First thing was to try and have a better week running. Last week seemed labored almost everytime I got out and I basically hated even running... not even sure why. Because in the last two months that's been one of the only things that's kept me from checking into a mental hospital.

Anyways this week I'm going to try really hard to be more positive. Hopefullly run better. No hip issues and just pound out some miles.

Sorry if your reading my blog and thinking "this guy is a freak". But this blog has been the only real journal I've ever kept. So I'm sure things sound jacked up on the outside and that I may be fishing for comments or something. But that's not the case. I apologies for anyone whos been turned off. It's just my blog... my journal. And eventually I'll be able to come back to it and read through things... hopefully by then I'll laugh at things. I've always been somewhat of a happy, positive person and in the last 6 months I've started to be really sad... maybe some kind of depression... I'm not sure. My issue. Not yours.

P.M. Middle B-hills extended through the Secret St. Had a little better day overall. Sun was out and was able to run in shorts and a T. That's worth a half smile maybe even like .84 or so of a smile.

Big boys tempo workout. Summer tempo loop modified. Circle of Trust with James. We took the warm up out about .8 longer so it ended up being 4.3 or so total. Then brought the full 8 miles of tempo all the way to River Road. Low of 25F. Started running at 5:00 a.m.

My mission today was simple: Make it to the bridge. The last two weeks I've had to stop early with stomach issues and then just gave up on the rest of the workout. Today I needed/ wanted this workout. Tried to treat it as much like a race as possible. Ate smart yesterday. Got to bed early. Tried to relax. Got up early enough to take care of all my business and just be in position to run as well as possible come tempo time.

Well the warm up went by fast like always and we were soon standing at the new starting line. Under the lights as it should be. Today I wanted the full workout so I decided to really work into the workout and not kill myself off early.

Ended with a 5:33 avg for the 8 miles or 44:25 total time.

Splits- 5:40, 5:49, 5:33, 5:34, 5:36, 5:39, 5:27, 5:18

Happy to finally finish off a solid effort and not cave in. Actually didn't have any stomach issues really. Other than some dry heaving durning the last .5 of so. But once I rounded the corner at mile 7 I knew I'd be able to finish. Effort felt very controlled until the last 1.5 or so. Then I did have to dig a little deeper. Kept it smooth at first and that helped at the end.

3.1 always on the run mile on the treadmill. Just a few to loosen up things from this morning. Felt pretty good overall and even let Lady Gaga sing me through the last .4 or so. #dowhatyouwantwithmybody

Reg ol DC loop with Stephen. Felt pretty stiff early on and the hip was kind of buggin. But as the run rolled out I felt strong. Happy to be making some progress. Pace was laxi taxi as we just chit chatted. Good for recovery. 30 F at 5:15 a.m. 147lbs after the run.

56.6 mile bike ride. Headed out just before 10 a.m. It was 36... freezing on a bike. Went over to ride the new parkway ribbon cutting ride with about 50 other cyclists. Not one of Clyde's favorite type of rides... slow, stop and go. Lots of wasting time... But I got through the hard parts and was able to ride pretty aggressive the last 27 miles or so. Felt really good to get out on the Venge. I think we willl work well together. This is only like the 3rd real ride on it. But things seemed to click today.

7 mile run after getting home from the ride. Took in good calories durning the ride so energy wasn't an issue. 6:45 avg for the run. Hip only hurt twice. Once as I leftt the cul de sac and once at about 1.3 miles into the run. Both were sharp pains but only for a second.

146 lbs after the ride and run.

Logan came over to run because he missed yesterday. Nothing fancy today. Just the ol DC loop. Legs were pretty flat and it was a lot like work getting around the loop this morning.

P.M. 8.3 total miles. Is there such a thing as a good failed workout? Ugh. Bad stomach issues tonight. I forgot just how bad eating Subway and doing speedwork mess with my body. My plan was to do three 1.5 mile sets. Warmed up for 3.45 kind of planning and mapping out how it'd boil out. Ended up planning a 1.45 mile speed section on the back side of Little Valley down to River Road. Then a .95 section to run back up to link and complete the loop. This may be too long but we'll see how it goes on future outings. Anyways heres how it went.

1. 7:13:** time for 1.44 distance or a 5:00 avg- hit the mile at 5:00 and kept it even.

2. 7:13:** time for 1.46 distance or a 4:58 avg- hit the mile at 4:56 and ended at the 4:58 avg.

So times are a little fast due to it being a net downhill but not crazy steep. Like a 1% grade for the most part.  A little steeper right at the start for like .15 but then so slight uphill at the end.

After the first one my stomach was rolling and I almost bagged anymore speed. But I jogged basically the mile back up to the top and it felt like I could try one more. It felt pretty good on the second set until about .90 into it. Then things just went crazy. I pushed through and about had a roadside right there in rush hour traffic on River Road at the finish. Had to find a port-a-potty in the construction even though I was only .5 away from home.

1 mile total cool down.

P.M. 6 miles this afternoon on the treadmill. It was sunny and 60 F outside but I was inside on the machine. Felt pretty good though. Blasting the music seems to clear my messed up head. Hip kind of bugged here and there. Hope it will loosen up for tomorrows long run. Last big run before "races" start next week. Hopefully we can stay on the right course tomorrow unlike last week.

Long run with the STG boys. Started at the DC and did an out and back 6 miles before coming back to the DC to join a bigger group... then running the STG half course in prep for next week. Pretty big group I'd say 20+ runners out on a cold (27 F) Jan morning. We were way chill for the most part all morning. After about mile 14 the pace did get slightly faster. I wanted to do a mini tempo of 3 miles on some of the closing miles of the race. So on the race course I tempoed miles 10,11,12 hitting 5:18, 5:22, 5:23 respectively. On the last mile in I started my cool down for 30 seconds or so but then Dave caught back up and wanted to keep rolling to the finish. So I hit the last mile in 5:47 even with the slow start. After that we did basically one more mile up to the corner cool down and back.

Pretty good end to a pretty hard week. Higher mileage with a couple goodish workouts and then Wednesday's big RUN, BIKE, RUN basically used a lot of any fuel in the tank for the rest of the week. Always fun to get out with the white Kenyans of So. Utah. Hope the rest of the days is just as good...

10.2 mile DC loop with LoGain. Pace was laxi taxi and I needed a good ez recovery run. Felt pretty spent this morning. A good sign. I hate going into a race feeling amazing and then feeling flat on race day. I'd much rather feel trashed in the days prior and  have my legs show up for the race.

22.2 mile bike ride this afternoon. Hit the full new airport loop with a little extension in LV at the end. Kept the pace honest if not hard. Felt good to get out and ride in the sun. 61F. The legs feel good but I can tell that I don't have the same biking legs I had last summer. 21.1 mph avg.

Middle B-hills and Secret St. The moon was amazing this moring as it has been the last few mornings. But today I just was in awe of it almost the whole run. And while running a long looking at the sky I saw the longest lasting falling star of my life. Must have fallen for like 5 seconds. It was awesome to see. The run was slow. No watch but I could tell I was basically crawling. Guess I should try to taper off a little and get ready for Saturday.... But it feels like racing is the farthest thing from my mind right now.

3 mile cool down

Met Dave, Ben and a few others at the start for a good warm up. It was 23 F and felt pretty chilly. Dropped down to Man-o-war and back with some other stuff before the race. Got in some good potty stop and was ready about 10 min's to the gun. So that was nice.

Goal for the race was to break 1:13. That was it. I didn't really taper too much as to keep it more of a good workout in prep for PHX full marathon. So I'm happy with the results. Just wanted to run within myself and make it count without giving up when it got hard.

5:23 avg

Splits: 5:18, 5:23, 5:17, 5:22, 5:20, 5:40, 5:30, 5:14, 5:16, 5:24, 5:28, 5:27, 5:22, 5:10 pace for the .1

For the first 4 miles if didn't look at the watch to see the splits. And that turned out to be good. Because I would have gone mental and started to stress about going out too fast. But I just kept it smooth, and ran with Dave and a couple of his boys who were doing a tempo workout for the first 5 with us. That kind of stressed me out and I finally told them to get away from us. Sorry guys... nothing personal.

As we started the climbs in B-hills everyone slowed on the hills and between grabing a drink and Gu, gagging the gu down and the uphill my 6th mile split was really slow. And that did stress me out. I thought it is too early to be slowing down that bad. But then on the 7th mile up the last big hill the split was pretty good at a 5:30 and I relaxed again. From the top of the last big climb to the finish I tried to push out everything I had left in the tank. Right around mile 8 Steve S. came blazing by me and I was now in 5th. I tried the rest of the race to work back up to him and 4th pace (nelson i think). But I just couldn't close the gap. Didn't have the wheels on the last two miles. My hip never had any pain. That was good. But about mile 7 it did get really tight and that moved into the hammy on the left side too. That little hitch just wouldn't allow any faster turnover. But then again I'm happy with how the race turned out. Stomach was pretty solid and in a half that's great for me.

The sun end up coming out and by mile 6 or so I had taken off the hat, gloves and arm warmers. And by the end of the race it turned out to be a really nice day... just really chilly at the start. At the end we got to watch Myler run a half mile race and that was fun to see.

Great race, Clyde! Curious to know what you could have done had you reversed your warm-up and cool-down distances. Although, with PHX as your goal the longer warm-up made you experience running on tired legs earlier. Hat's off to a great race and beating your goal by 90 seconds.

Ice loop early. It feels like the moon has been big for a month. And this morning it seemed to stay up high later in the morning than even last week. The run was ok at best. I felt super flat. No watch but I know it was slow. Seemed to take forever to finally get home. But it was good to get out and work the junk out of my stomach. No real soreness... just lack of pep.

P.M. 5.6 miles this afternoon. Felt pretty wore out and the hammy/ hip were both tight. Could of, should of, would have... maybe skipped this one. Oh well. Just took it slow and started to loosen up at the end. Went to massage envy this evening where a 60 year old lady had her way with me:). It wasn't even close to as effective as a trip to April. But we've had 3 gift cards that needed to be used up. It was a lot less painful than April though.

DC loop. Slept like crap again. When I finally got up out of bed at 6 a.m I felt horrible. Took like 20 min's to just get dressed and out the door. Really didn't want to run... at all. Hammy and hip are both still tight. But I pushed it out on the road. And after about 1.7 miles or so I started to feel much better. Ended up really enjoying the morning out. So never read a book or a day by it's cover.

6 miles this evening on the treadmill. For some reason it just seemed nicer to stay indoors and sweat it out. Even though I could have ran outside in shorts and a T. ??? Hip and hammy are starting to feel better- that's the other thing the treadmill was easier on them too.

80 min's on the trainer after the run. Good to get a spin in. It's all the ride I'll get today but was happy to do it. 20 mph avg.

P.M. 10.2 miles around the ol DC loop again. Same direction as this morning. I know I'm plain. Felt pretty wasted at mile 4 but by mile 9, 10 the legs were turning over pretty good and I felt better... maybe even festive in my short shorts and tee.

144 lbs at the end of the day and super hungry.

DC loop again. I did run it in reverse today so it's baisically a totally new loop:). Slept great until about 2 a.m then I was up the rest of the night. Sucks because I'm wasted and just want/need the sleep. When I finally got out of bed I had zero motivation or energy to run. But I got dressed and headed out. Started slow and felt better as I went. Hope to snap out of this "trashed" phase before the weekend's long run.

143 lbs after the run. The lowest I've been since HS. Either I'm getting into some really good shape or I'm killing myself off slow and steady.

P.M. 6 miles tonight on the treadmill. Couldn't get outside and do any type of workout. And to be honest I really wasn't in the mood. Hip and hammy are still pretty sore. So I kept it uptempo on the machine and hit a couple 5:40's in the middle. Which on the treadmill to me feels like 4:40 pace. Got a good sweat in before lifting my 5 lb weights. Getting buff:)

P.M. 6 miles tonight. Inner B-hills and Secret St. Hip hurt like crazy tonight. It has hurt pretty good just throughout the day. But was killer on the run. 11 mile warm up

10 mile tempo

1.25 mile cool down

Met Logan at the DC to do my Marathon Training Loop or MTL. We kept the pace pretty chill on the warm up. Temps seemed to warm up a little quicker today and by mile 8 at my house we dropped some layers. Started the tempo wanting to just hit some progressive splits at just  under tinman pace. I've felt crazy dead all week and yesterdays bad hip left me feeling kind of unsure about anything today. But the hip felt good on the warm up (with the heat patch).

First 2 miles were 5:48, 5:42 and the last two miles were 5:25, 5:25. Those are the only splits I remember. Avg for the 10 miles was 5:34. After looking up the avg I accidently deleted the run and other splits. Oops. But this ended up being a very solid workout on some worked legs and system. Glad to have Logan there to hit a solid workout. He helped pull me through the middle miles and had he not been there I'd maybe have bagged it at mile 5. Last time I did this loop and workout I hit a 5:41 avg a few weeks ago.

But we hit the trails and she was a gamer to do some slow running. So thats what we did. By the end her tounge was hanging on the ground... she's not in running shape. But she loved it and told me so with some big wet licks to clean my forehead from sweat.

Ran some junk out of the system and got the week going but it didn't really feel good. Hip actually was kind of buggin and I had to stop at mile 6 and work some issues out.

2.1 cool down

Ran the normal loop with the Circle of Trust and James. It was freezing. Temps said 28F but my hands were ice the whole time... even still. Hip was super tight on the warm up. I slept horrible and just had a super uneasy feeling... But we warmed up- hit a potty stop and I decided in my heart to really hammer down today. In weeks past I've kind of tried to take it super easy at first and then hammer at the end. Today I wanted to start faster and see what happened at the end.

Finished in 43:10 for a new PR on the course. 5:24 avg

Splits: 5:35, 5:16, 5:15, 5:29, 5:33, 5:20, 5:27, 5:15

I worked pretty hard today. I don't think I could have worked any harder. Mad the 7th mile got lower. I really remember mentally not paying attention and that's why I slowed down. The only way I could run this course any faster is if it wasn't pitch black in darkness. I don't think I could ever give a harder effort. I just needed to unleash some built up stress. So the run was good for that. Hip was tight the whole time and it moved into that left hammy. But I don't think either slowed me down much in this 8 mile tempo... however had I been in a full marathon it'd take it's toll. So I've got to find a way to fix those issues.

Had to "go" bad but the doors were all locked. What's the use of a restroom if the doors are always locked. FML. Pushed on up the trail like a pioneer  until I found a porta potty at a construction site. But then even after the stop I still had some stomach issues. Glad today was just EZ and recovery. Hoping to get on the Venge later today:).

40.6 mile bike ride. 20.7 mph avg. Out around the airport into Washington fields back down the river trail and then on to Sunriver. Around the southern parkway and a small tour of LV. Kept it uptempo most the ride. Not sure how my legs will handle any hard miles tomorrow after this. It felt windy here and there and I was working way too hard for the speed I was going. I know one thing and that's my legs are not in the riding shape they were in last summer.

6.5 mile run right off the bike. Headed out and the legs felt sloppy and slow. Hit the first mile in 7:01. I thought it would be like 9:00. Hit the next few at 6:20 and finished the run at a 6:32 avg. Not too bad considering the work on the bike. Think I'm ready for some food...

Big workout this morning with the Circle of trust and Stephen. Met at the DC for my MTL run out around the fields. Hit the warm up pretty chill and it was around a 7:10 avg. Goals for the tempo were to just put it in gear and see how it went. Got out a little faster than prior weeks but wasn't able to bring the last two miles down as fast to finish. Still ended with a 5:26 avg for the 10 mile tempo. Basically the same route as weeks before but with a minor change because the trail is being worked on around mile 6. So todays route is just a little slower due to turns getting on the trail system. Last weeks avg for the 10 miles was 5:34. So some pretty good progress. Happy about the run and mileage this week.

Regular DC loop. Hip was so jacked today. It just wouldn't loosen up doing the hip routine. Wouldn't pop back in like normal. So I knew today would be hard. If it wouldn't have hurt the rest of the run would have been pretty good. Hoping that through the day it'll loosen up and pop back in or whatever it does.

7.5 miles on the treadmill tonight. Hip was rough for about 3.7 miles but it finished feeling doable... not good though. Spent a half hour after doing the hip routine and trying to work it out. Could be an interesting tempo in the morning. Or none at all.

Tempo Tuesday.

I knew after yesterdays bad hip that today was going to be hard... I didn't think it would end up being this bad. Just felt like TRASH the entire morning. From warm up to cool down it was bad. Not only did the hip hurt but my heart rate was super high. Just regular effort took twice the amount of output. I guess they can't all be good... hoping this is just the ups and downs of training and not a glimps of things to come.

8 mile tempo kind of went like this. Hit 5 miles at a 5:34 avg then I just had to stop. Hip was killing me. Walked it out a little then started running again. Hit the next mile at 6:16, then 5:45 and the hip kind of loosened up so on the 8th mile I was able to hit a 5:25. But it felt like a 5:05 effort. Ugh. Guess I got through it... even though it was a bummer. Just mentally stressed out too. Need this hip to pop back and it just will not release. Maybe a visit to April is in order.

2.8 miles tonight on the treadmill. Had planned on staying on to hit 5.1 and square off my day at 20. But the hip hurt. And at 2.4 I felt a really sharp pain that about put me on the floor. I slowed down for .4 more but just decided to get off and see what happens tomorrow. Hammy is crazy tight too. I think they are related issues.

DC loop with a little extra. Got stood up by Logan Hooper for the second week in a row. (that's a joke on both ends boys). So it was just me and the road/ trail. Hip felt a lot better than the last two days but still hurts more than it should. The hammy felt great though. Spent most of the evening last night working both out with the hip routine, foam roller and sitting on the edge of the counter and using a softball to roll deep into it. Anyways it must have helped a little. But overall I just feel pretty flat with no pop. Quads and calves are carring fatigue over day after day where as a few weeks ago I had no recovery and felt freash and ready to hit it again daily. I think there is some neural fatigue going on:). If you can remember that then it showes your blog age...

20 miles on the spin trainer in 61 min's. Just a fairly ez spin out mostly for recovery to try and loosen everything up in the legs. Never really tried to push that hard.

20 more miles on the trainer. 60 min's. Basically the same effort as this morning. Not too hard.

4.2 miles right off the treadmill. 15 seconds in transition. A PR for me. bike shoes off. running shoes on. GO. Felt pretty good in the hip and hammy throughout the run. One really sharp pain about mile 3.7. I'll work them both over tonight agian like last night. Sometimes I stress myself out. Today was one of those days.

Speed workout. This one I've been wanting and setting up in my mind for a while. My MAIN goal today was the final 2 mile set. My old PR from the DC up to River Road was 10:16. That was at least 2 years ago- pre injury. I wanted and need it to go down today.

3 mile warm up. 3x1 mile with about a mile in between then a 2 mile set and about 2 miles cool down.

Mile 1: 4:49- Started this out on the back side of LV. Has some net downhill. It was in the darkness and I really had no idea what pace i was going.

one mile jog

Mile 2: 4:54- Through B-hills. Flat then a small downhill then a uphill. So a pretty honest mile. Again I didn't really know how fast I was going. Just tried to be honest for the workout.

.6 jog up to the next set

Mile 3: 5:11- This mile has some good rollers and I didn't attack it like the first two. I really wanted to have something for the final 2 mile. So with the hills this mile was pretty good.

one mile jog over to the DC. While on this recovery jog I started a mantra in my head. "I need this today. Do it". I kept repeating it over and over. And by the time I crossed the river I was saying it out loud and letting out a few war cries. Today was the day.... Lets do this.

2 mile- 4:54, 5:19 (10:13 total). It wasn't very even splits. But again it was still dark and I didn't look at the gps once. This whole section is a net uphill with the final .1 or so up a steep ramp as you get to River Road. I was PUMPED after I caught my breath and was able to look back through the splits. A 3 second PR. I'll take it. Since it's my first attempt at a record in 2 years or so. And it's not like I'm doing it on fresh legs.

Pretty happy how the morning went. got some good turnover and some confidence back after my failed workout on Tuesday. I was up early and got the heat patch on the hip. That with the stuff I did last night on the hip and hammy seemed to help me run pretty "free" this morning. Glad this is in the bank. Needed it.

3.3 miles on the treadmill. Just EZ to loosen up the damage done this morning. Things felt pretty good. Other than right little toe has a new blister that really hurts.

25 Mile Big workout Long run

12.5 mile warm up

9.95 mile tempo

2.55 mile cool down

12.5 mile warm up. Uphill the entire way. Only wanted to be 12 miles up but the car lied and we ended up .5 too much. It felt like it too. 12+ miles of uphill starts to wear a brotha down. By the time we crested the summit my legs were heavy and I just wanted Dave and Logan to bring the car up and get me.

The bad news of the morning is I forgot my watch and or GPS. I don't think I've ever done that before. Bummer. Because today was off the hook. My plan was to hit the 10 miles back down at an agressive effort but not overdue it. The no gps thing sucked because I had no idea how fast or slow I was going.... until the end. I felt fluid all tempo until about the last mile. Then the lack of downhill training caught up to me and my quads had about had enough. I could tell the legs were getting a little heavy. So I finished and started counting. I counted at a nice even 1,2,3... and got to 252 when Logan came by. He said he was at around 52:30is. So I'm guessing that I was roughly 4 min's ahead of him. Which puts me right at or just under 5:00 pace for the tempo. It is some very good downhill running. But it's also after 12.5 mile of UPHILL.  I honestly cant stand the fact that I can't read back through those splits!!!!! Buggin overtime! Anyways it ended up being a special moring with the Circle of Trust as everyone ran well. Jogged the cool down very easy and called it a day. #youguysareclowns

55 mile bike ride. Was going to get on the trainer today inside and ride for like an hour or so. 20 miles to loosen up the legs. But as the day rolled on and temps got up to around 67 F I couldn't stand it anymore. So I went outside for a ride. I didn't plan on going this far but I couldn't get enough of how nice it felt. Actually got a little farmers tan line on my arms. Kept the pace super ez and think I only hit like a 17.8 mph avg. So effort wasn't hard at all. I'm not sure if this was a good, bad or neutral choice as to help the legs recover. But it was a fun ride.

.6 on the treadmilll while I tried to wake up. Then 6 miles around the inner b-hills loop extened through the secret st. Legs are JACKED up. Like marathon trashed. Oops. I did not want to do that on Saturday. Did not want a big recovery phase. I've only got three weeks until PHX and I might have to spend one of them in recovery mode.... stupid, stupid, stupid. On the flat my legs are super sore and hurt, on uphill they hurt but I can kind of stride it out. On any downhill grade... Fugetaboutit. Usually when I'm sore like this I can run a few miles and kind of loosen up. But today that didn't happen.

8 miles on the treadmill this afternoon. It was 67 F outside but I had kids home and had to hit the machine up. Quads were killer for like 4 miles. Just painful to even run. But by the closing miles things seemed to loosen up just a little. Enough to take the edge off at least.

That was a killer run you did... although I know you are paying the price a little now. If you get the quad soreness to subside, the PHX course shouldn't bring it back. The only downhill parts are so early in the race so you won't be hammering anyways. Even if you don't get any fast running in this week, you'll be alright if you throw in a couple token efforts next week. The marathon is about accumulation over the long haul, and you've had a couple really good months.

From Superfly on Wed, Feb 12, 2014 at 13:54:59 from 74.211.21.81

Thanks man your words are soothing:). I've found too many ways to skrew a race up before I've even got there...bad track record in that area. But I do feel like I'm due and training has been very solid. So I'll just try to relax about it and like you said get a couple good ones in next week.

Big MTL this morning with the Circle of Trust. I kind of felt that rather than doing a 11 mile warm up then trying to hammer the last 10 that... maybe today we'd just put it in "uptempo" gear from the start and keep it there all day. The guys were good enough to agree and accept my terms. So that's what we did. Right out of the car kept it honest all day without going into the tank and trying to hammer anything. Ended the run at a 6:25 avg for the 21 miles. At mile 17 or so I kind of started getting antzy and thought about hammering it in... Hit a 5:40, then a 5:45 and both felt way too hard. So I slowed back down and rejoined the guys. Pushed it a little more on the last mile in chasing Logan and hit one more 5:45 but other than that pace was pretty even.
Legs were still super tight. Quads and calves both have some serious knots that I'll have April work out later today. But overall I did feel better than I have all week. Really looking forward to resting and having April work out my issues. Hoping to get some mojo back next week.

Quads and calves seemd better but really flat... like no pop at all and some deep soreness. Tempo tomorrow might be interesting. 6:36 avg for the run.

7 miles this evening. Temps were almost hot at 73F. Got some new compression shorts at the STGRC and they seemed to help the quads while running. Hoping to have somewhat of a positive tempo in the morning.... but I'm not holding my breath about it.

Tempo with the Circle and James

4.4 mile warm up

8.1 mile tempo

2.5 cool down

So today I needed some kind of positive feedback. Not a super workout but something. Legs have felt DEAD since the big long 25 mile run two Saturdays ago. Plus I've been sick... just have felt like things were slipping away.

Warmed up and felt pretty good. Decided to take it out aggressive and try to hold on at the end. I knew my quads would shut down early as they are NOT recovered. Plus we had a little tail wind for the first 3 miles or so... but then a head wind on the last two. Ended up hitting the 8.1 miles of tempo (I went .15 past the stopping spot) at a 5:27 avg. My fastest avg was a 5:24 a few weeks ago but that was before we had to modify and change miles 5-8. This finish is a little slower and today was on WAY more trashed legs. So I'm happy with the effort. Even though my splits got slow at the end.

5:12, 5:16, 5:18, 5:33, 5:38, 5:34, 5:42, 5:38

So I started out a little too fast... agian there was a tail wind. Miles 4,5,6 are about regular. They all have some rollers and on and off trails. Then 7,8 are slower but the legs were hammered... quads wanted to stop at mile 4.5. And there was a noticable head wind on the last couple miles or at least like 1.5 or so.

Anywho I'm glad it's over and in the bank. Might do a few mile repeats on Thurs but other than that I can relax my legs and brain until March 1 and rest assured I've done all I can do. I think I'm ready to bring it in PHX.

8.1 mile run this morning. Middle B-hills extended through the Secret St and LV. Flet pretty good for an EZ laxi taxi run. Not running last night was both good and bad. Good because I felt rested. Bad because I didn't workt the tightness out in the evening and a short 3 miler would have done it. I'm crazy hungry right now and the body just wants to gain weight.

147lbs after the run.

24.1 mile bike ride around noon. Out to Sandhollow and back on the new road. It's 12.0 miles from my house out to the lake where the roads intersect. I'd guessed 13 so I was way off.:). Didn't try to hammer it at all but wouldn't allow myself to just coast. Ended up right at 20.1 mph avg. Pretty good effort considering the hills and crazy A wind on the return.

8.1 mile run off the bike. Same loop as this morning. It was 73F and I had the shirt off for the first time in 2014 for a run. Salty Sweat covered the body. That's one big concern for PHX. Is the warmer temps. Most of my big workouts have been in sub 32 F temps with this cold winter we've had. A race temp of even 50F will be warm.

Anywas kept the run honest but had no watch to check pace. Felt so so throughout and by the end was CRAZY hungry.

6 miles on the treadmill this morning. Was planning on doing some kind of speed workout outside. But I woke up on the wrong side of the bed as they say and just didn't want to ... so I didn't.

10.2 miles tonight around the DC. My plan was to do 1 mile on the way over at LT pace and then make an run at my DC to River Road 2 mile PR of 10:13. But... things didn't go as planned.

Started out with the 2.5 mile warm up over to the middle of B-hills. Then got going on the first mile.

4:52- Yikes I only wanted to hit like 5:05 or so. Hard enough to open up the lungs but not kill anything. So this ended up too fast. Jogged from there about 2 miles over to the DC. While jogging over things felt hard and I was really negative about hitting the 2 mile.

1.3 @- 4:52 pace.... and then I stopped. Got out on the 2 mile. Started out at what felt hard but seemed controlled pace. Although I felt like I was working really hard and didn't feel like I was going anywhere. Pace seemd slow. I never once looked at the gps. So coming into the mile I decided to stop- thinking I was just way too slow.... then my watch flashed 4:49 for the mile and as I stopped I then hurried to get going again. Now thinking shiz... I can kill my PR. But it only lasted like .3 because I just couldn't get going again. And something just said stop Clyde. So I did.

So kind of bummed I just didn't finish off that mile and most likely would have got a new PR... and I'm just mad at myself for not running smarter and watching the watch to see where my pace was. Kind of a failed effort. But I did get the lungs open. And was able to get some of the junk left over from last weeks sickness to come out. Got the legs to turn over too. Just not for very long.

So today kind of sucked.... bad. I had bad stomach issues that started around mile 3. Maybe even a little before. Forced me to stop the tempo and go into Maverick for a potty stop at 3.8 miles into the run. So the last 3 miles of the BIG 5 mile tempo were all jacked up. Oh well. I tried to figure out why my stomach got so jacked up while we ran back on the cool down. My original conclusion was that I'd eaten 2 blood oranges and an apple right before bed. Not the best idea but they all tasted soo good that I couldn't stop. But then after re thinking it. Today before running I decided NOT to take my Imodium pill. I didn't forget to take it. I just thought "it's only 5 miles of tempo this morning". I don't need it. That proved to be false. I've been taking them before all big long runs and tempo workouts. And I feel it helps big time. So note to self. Just take them... always.

Anyways ended the 5 miles at a 5:27 avg which isn't bad considering I really only tempoed 2 of those miles. Got out a little too fast but I knew that would happen with this being a shorter workout.

Now I'm ready to really dive right into a good taper. Relax the mind and body and let what happens happen in P'town this weekend.

Well I haven't been looking forward to writing this report. Bottom line is I messed this race up 3 weeks ago on a 25 mile training run with 10 miles at sub 5 min pace. I haven't felt the same since. Haven't ran close to that since and just wasn't recovered. Dumb to have done that...  sucks to live out the consequences. But thats really what happened. FACT. So with that and the sickness I've had the last few days. I just knew today wasn't going to be good. I tried to be positive and do the best I could. But I knew it wasn't going to be the day...

All that said I ran my best effort for the day.

Hung out at the start for about 45 min's. We just sat there at the gun range listenting to the most annyoing announcer ever. The guy was off the hook crazy. Then I put my hand in a prickly pear while hitting up a potty stop. And a few min's befor the gun went off it started to rain. Like a downpour at the time. Awesome. And the rain ended up being great. It was just the wind that really sucked the life out of me.

Decided to go out strong but not out of control. Stayed right with the Ogden boys for the first 5 miles then fell off them about 10 seconds climbing the hills. Then they started to hammer the downhill at around mile 7 and I was now running in 4th and would basically stay right there the rest of the race. Or 5th depending on what really happened.

Mile splits. 5:33, 5:19, 5:28, 5:18, 5:39, 5:49, 5:22, 5:27,5:28, 5:30, 5:33, 5:36, 5:45, 5:41, 5:35, 5:38, 5:51, 5:59, 5:57, 5:55, 5:45, 5:51, 5:58, 5:57, 5:53, 5:51 .2 @ 5:47

Hit the half in around 1:12:20

Had the course at 26.33

So I didn't ever ever ever feel good today. The first 10 or so felt ok. Like "I'm in a race the effort is harder but ok". But never felt like "Bang- Legs go baby". Then after mile 11 or so I really started to just "grind". Like I knew I'd possibly hit a wall or struggle... typical marathon stuff. But that happens at like mile 20 or 23. Not 11 or 12. From then on I just could not race. Miles 11-20 were so pathetically crappy I just about walked off the course. At 17 I was so frustrated that I decided to stop. But I could see the course turning  up a head and decided to push on to the next corner and see if changing directions might help. It kind of did but not much. The wind was an issue as well. Just slowed the pace and bugged the brain. After around mile 18 I just decided to not DNF even though I knew it wasn't going to be the race I'd trained for. So I said to myself. Just hit 6 min pace from here on in and at least you'll break 2:30. So that's basically what I did. Semi happy about that. My only real goal was to break 2:30 although my mileage, workouts and even the half marathon in January would all suggest I have a better race in me. But.... Oh well.  In the end I'm glad I didn't drop out. Even though I was so close. Like one step away from stopping. My splits are just all over the place. I never really did hit the wall or die. I just couldn't race anymore. And it turned into a long painful workout/ long run. I really love to train. I love hitting it everyday and pushing myself to the brink. I love seeing progress and feeling super fit. But I hate racing. I hate expectations that I put on myself and the disappointment of not reaching them. I've been in good shape before. I feel like through this winter I've been in great shape. I feel like I have a super race in me.... it's just so hard for me to boil that sucker out. I'm getting sick of trying. But I cant stop because I know it's in there... so the beat goes on I guess.

Thanks to my good friends for the trip down. I've logged thousands of miles with Dave and Logan. We are all getting old. Racing is hard on old men. But we keep smiling.

Still a fine performance, Clyde! Way to gut it out!

I can empathize. For the 2013 St. George Marathon, I made some training errors too close to the race (tempos too long and too hard), and I felt flat the entire race. Ended up running no where near where my fitness level was. The fire from that disappointment is still raging inside. It provides good fuel. You will be fine. Just rest up, keep consistent, and don't change what you are doing. 2014 will be a monster year for you.

Also, you are only old if you think you are :)

You think your old now? Give yourself a few years and see how it feels. J/K. Keep going and try to stay out of your own head and youll be fine.

Hang in there Clyde! I know you're disappointed with this result. But you felt a bit unwell earlier this week and I almost guarantee that played a role. But you still ran a good race and how sweet did the back of your singlet look with that "Superfly" written vertically on it?!

This race did not reflect your fitness or what you've earned and that always sucks but use that to fuel your flame and go after the next one. You are fit, you weren't wrong about that. It just didn't work out this time. Keep on it and when it all works out it's that much sweeter (trust me I know now!)

Training runs can be so tricky, I hate when we realize that we screwed up a race by overtraining. Live and learn it's such a fine line. It was fun to see you finish. Good job

Good run Clyde. I think you know what to do next time... when you start to get in REALLY good shape, if you're still a few weeks out... just back off a little. The cumulative fitness is there, and it will be there for whatever you decide to do next.

More to add to the list:

Don't drink orange cytomax the night before the marathon to hydrate with... only later to find out it's the caffeinated kind. So you don't sleep all night and are up peeing a dozen times. Ogden 2008, Utah Valley, StG 2010... took a while to put two and two together on that one):

30.3 mile ride outside on the Venge at a 20.9 mph avg. Spent the whole day trying to decided if I should run. Not run. Ride.... and about 5 pm just decided to head out. Took it fairly ez for the first 6 miles or so... slow in places. But then started to warm up and was pretty honest all the way in from there. Good to get some blood flowing back into the legs. 20 miles on the trainer. Pretty ez spin trying again to keep some blood in the legs. Maybe also help get my bum use to being in the saddle. It'll take some time:). Worked up a little sweat but not really anything to write home about.

2 miles on the treadmill after. I know I really hit it hard today. I planned on doing 5 miles but Hayler woke up from his nap and... I just wasn't in the mood to run much more. A full, honest recovery is in the works:)

35 mile ride out around the airport and fields. Basically the same ride as yesterday but extended down past the DC and into Bloomington then back home that way. Another 70 degree afternoon in the STG. I didn't plan on riding again but couldn't say no to the temps. Took the tri bike out for the first ride of the year. There was a little learning curve after not being on it for like 9 months or so. Kept the pace honest and ended at a 21.1 mph avg... and got my first KOM of 2014. #pounditbaby

Headed out with Ty and Bob early to ride to Beaver Dam and back.... but 15 miles into the ride I felt like garbage and had to let them go. I headed up to the top of Kayenta and drank a rockstar and ate a bar. Within about 5 miles I started to feel good again... So I decided to loop out around Hurricane and kind of ride the 70.3 course in reverse. The wind was horrible out Hurricane way... just rocked my world. Then coming into Sandhollow it about blew me over going 50 mph down the hill. I had to pull my foot out and basically drag myselt to a stop. That ended up grinding off my left cleat. So for the last 15 miles back home I kind of had to peddle with one leg. While the left side kept slipping off. Grabbed another KOM on the ride. Ended with a 19.5 mph avg. Sorry that you are still having a lot of pain running. My suggestion would be to try to catch the 8 or 9 minute guy on 75% of your runs, and ride your bike some. You are still young, your body is just tired and thrashed and probably needs a reset. Last time I ran 20 that fast was downhill in a marathon when I did a personal best. Don't get down on yourself, you are a machine.

Clyde, I know we just love to run and get out there and crank it out. But I agree with Ryan (and I bet most everyone else on here)... Give yourself a break. You don't need to shut it down, but let your body rest. I have cut back a lot in the last two years and am running the best I ever have. When it is time to rip it up in training, do it! But right now let yourself just chill a bit.

Take it easy my friend. I learned my lesson by pushing and pushing. When your running in pain that's not fun, not fitness, or a benefit for enhancing your performance. It's just running cause you feel you must. I went through some major pain doing this samething and it ruin my performance and improvements. Try to find enjoyment pain-free exercise that doesn't cause the hip pain for now

Did my Birthday run today. This year I turned 35... so I had to run 35 miles. Met Logan, Steve, and Marlk at the DC at midnight. Started running around 12:10 a.m. We did 2 DC/ Stonecliff loops @ 12.6 miles. And then one DC loop at 10 miles. It ended up being about .25 long so we stopped running right at 35 miles and walked back in. Steve and Mark did the first loop with us and then headed out. So it left Logan and I for the remaining 22.5 or so miles. It seemed like the first loop really drug... but the second loop went by really fast and the third was shorter anyways so it wasn't too bad. Had perfect conditions under a bright big moon. 55-60 F and no wind. Just great for a long run in the middle of the night. We ended up with a running time of 4:10:46 and a 7:10 min mile avg. Not too shabby. Legs felt pretty good too... hips and hammy werent that bad. Hammy had some sharp pain durning the second loop but I put a heat patch on for the third and it didn't really bother me again. Over all I felt pretty good. Feet took the brunt of it as I think I got a couple blisters on my toes. Other than that and being sleepy... things went about as good as it can. 35 is the new 20 right? Big Thanks to the guys for coming. And Logan for pushing the whole thing out with me.

Warmed up on the regular dc loop. After four miles I decided to start the tempo. First mile was through B-hills, Second was on the trail above the river and over to the DC. 4&5 up to River Road and 5 was back down the inner river trail. 5:37, 5:32, 5:31, 5:40, 5:43

So so effort and results today. Hip felt doable and ok on the warm up and first two miles of the tempo. But by 2.5 it got tight and then on the last couple miles I was laboring a lot. Feel like I'm stuck in 3rd gear and the motor is rapped out. Just running too hot and not fast enough. Need to find a way to grab another gear or two a long with bringing the rpms down.

4.2 miles on the treadmill this afternoon. Felt fairly good... knock on wood.

22 mile long run at a 6:18 avg. Same loop as last week. I called it the marathon training loop in the winter. Maybe now it can be Duce Duce or Double D... IDK. Anyways Hayden, Aaron and Steve started out with me and took it out pretty fast from the start. The slowest mile all day was 6:49 and that was mile 1. Just kept it honest throughout. Those guys cut back through the middle of the fields and I took it all the way to the trail. Nothing very fast as the fastest mile of the morning was 6:07. Just a good long endurance building workout. Temps were great as it was about as good as it gets in STG in June. Started at 67F and basically didn't get any warmer. With clouds keeping the sun away through the finish. I felt pretty good as well with minimal hip pain.... 4/10.

Ice loop. Didn't get out until about 7 a.m. Sun was already up and it seemed warmer. But temps actually weren't bad at 63F. Sunday my hip didn't hurt at all. Like none. I cannot remember a day where that has been the case. So this morning I was excited to see what running would feel like. It was pretty good but the hip did tighten back up about 3 miles in- but pain wasn't bad 4/10. Kept it smooth and EZ. Saw the of the D-hills cross team but not the old grumpy skipper.

Last week I hit a 5:39 avg so today was a little better. But I still struggled to close it out. During the last mile I inhaled a mesquito and it made me start dry heaving, plus the legs were getting heavy and there is a pesky little climb the last .17 or so. But I'd stll like to finish it off stronger. Hip was sorish but very runnable with the heat patch. 69 F when I walked outside. Did one more loop around the park after getting back.

149.5 lbs after the run.... still sitting too heavy. But considering the massive Apollo burger and fries I had for dinner last night. I guess I shouldn't complain.

Tried to pull some mojo from Paul's magical race on Saturday. The guy is amazing. Makes me want to work harder. Not to try and hit a qualifier. I know that's not realistic. But to maximize whatever potential I have left. Thanks for the boost man!

Did a marathon training run this morinng. The full 26.2 miles in 2:44:49 or a 6:16 avg. Met the Circle at the DC early and did the marathon training loop with a bunch of add-ons to get the mileage. My goal/plan was to be right around a 2:45. So we did pretty good considering I didn't even look at the clock until about mile 14.

Felt really junky for the first 6 miles or so. Heart rate was crazy high. I was dizzy and the hip was really sore. Maybe after that I just got numb to the pain. But from 7-22 I felt pretty smooth and just clicked off the miles. Hit the last 6 miles or so at 5:50 pace. Took GU's at miles 8.8 and 17.

Good long endurance workout to have in the books. Didn't run hard enough to get sore. So I should recover fine with rest. Glad to have it done- glad the guys agreed to do it with me.

Tempo Tuesday... or at least a poor attempt. It was 80 F when I walked outside just after 5 a.m. I knew today would be hard. Temps this summer have been pretty mild and I'm just not use to running in hotter conditions. Durning the 3 mile warm up I was sweaty and kind of just wanted to bag doing tempo. But the warm up came and went and next thing I knew we were underway.

5:44 first mile. Still finishing off the conversation and getting into it.

5:24

5:21

.5 5:23

at mile 3.5 I started gagging and also didn't know if the guys were still coming. So I stopped and waited. While catching my breath. Soon after Logan came up the trail and I jumped back in with him. Hit the last 1.5 miles at like a 5:45 avg. Just couldn't get going again.

I don't know what to think about this effort. Not good by any means. But better than sleeping in like I was tempted to do. Still really having a hard time getting the body to want to go back into "race" gear. I'd struggle to race a half right now... So is the DesNews half in a few weeks a good idea? Hmm...

Yesterday was hot and then it clouded up in the afternoon- locking in the heat. So as I ran into a slight breeze this morning it felt like a blow dryer in my face. Mouth got dry in like a mile. The run really wasn't that great. Tight hip too. FML

5 miles on the treadmill this evening. Feet feel tired. I started working at the running store on Wednesday mornings and am not use to standing all day... Plus I wore some old racing flats to work and by the time I left I was soo ready to be off my feet.

There are fires up on the regular course so today it was out on the Utah Hill 14 mile loop. It sounded horrible yesterday but ended up not being that bad. After I extended out and around the Bloomington Circle and back to square it off at 18. Haydo kept the pace honest and we hit a 6:58 avg. Not too bad for dirt and some hard climbs. It was warm and I did a fair amount of sweating. But after we crested the final climb there was a nice breeze that actually felt really good all the way back to the cars.

11 mile warm up @ 7:00 pace... ended up catching the 7 min guy right at the 11 mile mark. Spent the first 4 miles or so in a daze. Kind of seeing stars and almost blacking out. I must have been somewhat out of it. Becaue earlier I scared the shiz out of myself and thought I saw the white lady sitting there looking at me... truely was scared stiff. Oh boy... lol

Only took one Gu and drink at mile 8. It was 80 F and very humid. I was a sweaty pig early and often. And eventually started to cramp up even with the salt pills I'd taken before the run.

10 mile tempo at 5:48 avg or  in 58:14

After the 11 mile warm up I wanted to hit some kind of tempo/  workout. Even though I felt trashed. Quads were even sore from the run yesterday out on Utah Hill. I thought I'd just run as hard and smooth as I could to finish off the last 10 miles of a 21 mlie run. Started to die at around mile 6 and hit a 5:55 there. Thought about pulling the plug but pressed on. Hit mile 7 at 5:42 and got some confidence back to finish under a 5:50 avg.

Not a crazy awesome workout but fairly solid with the hot temps and longer run yesterday. Glad to get through the whole thing without wussing out. :)

A half hearted tempo today. The guys are out of town so I was solo. Wasn't into it at all. Quads are still sore. Hip and hammy tight. And stomach was pretty bad- 4 star morning if you know what I mean. Anyways I didn't wear tempo shoes... took off and just ran while I thought about doing any tempo at all. Next thing I knew I was over by the freeway and had gone 5 miles. So from the freeway I decided to try tempoing the Mayors loop counter clockwise.

2.5 miles at 5:32 avg. Once I got up to River road I was done. hit like a 5:32, 5:29, 5:33 for the .5

I don't know. Wuss status for sure. My tempos are a joke. I hope it's the heat and humidity that's making it so tough to put together a solid tempo... and not me being just flake city. Because I seriously was trashed once I got to River Road and dripping wet... wanted to lay down on the sidewalk and just die.

Anyways hopefully later in the week I can try it again and do better. Ran a extended 5 mile cool down around the Stone Cliff loop.

Tempo ish workout. Warmed up out to Stucki and then did the winter tempo loop. Had zero expectations as I feel trashed (flirting with the over training zone) and it was 83 F and humid when I left the house just before 5 a.m (and only down to 81 F when I got back just before 7 a.m). Like it sucks. FACT

5 mile tempo at 5:45 avg. Had no goal other than to make it through 5 miles of some kind of push. Never looked at the watch. Just ran. Didn't ever redline but it wasn't comfortable either. Basically 20 seconds a mile slower than I was through the winter on this loop. But it's basically 50 degrees hotter now- which is proving to be a BIG factor.

After that I did 1.3 miles back across the road section and over to where you get back on the trail as kind of a recovery pace. Like 6:15 ish.

Then one mile at 5:17

Then a recovery mile down to River Road at 6:20ish

And then one last hard mile basically all uphill from the river up past the gas station in 5:26

Then a mileish cool down to finish.

Nothing amazing thats for sure. But I told myself to just do it today. Don't ditch out early or get too worked up over the hot conditions. Just get through the workout and take it for what it is.

One of the top ten for sure or maybe even top 5 worst runs EVER! Ran from Brian Head condo to Panguitch lake. I felt sickly-ish all day. Maybe altitude sicknes or something. Dizzy, light headed, totally drained of energy. Just did not want to run- AT ALL! Finally left the condo at 4:30 p.m because Doug was also up here and was gonna drive over and go fishing at the lake. So I sent Myler with him and I ran over. The condo sits at 9,710 ft and in the first 3.9 miles I climbed up to 10,640 ft or so. Felt good that I kept the pace under 9 min miles on the first 2 steep miles then hit like 7:30's up to where it starts to drop. Didn't run any of the downhill hard or fast. First I felt crappy and couldn't... and I didn't want my quads to get jacked skrewing up any potential workouts next week. So fastest mile was like 6:15 and most were just under 6:30 pace or so. Had the shirt off again and got fried on the back and shoulders. Ugh... could this run get any crappier? Yes!!!!!! Stomach started to bug bad around 11 miles into it and forced a road side stop. Anyways I finally go to the boat ramp and found Doug's truck. Waited there for about 35 min's before the spotted me and came to pick me up. Just laied there in the back of the truck and wanted to die for awhile. dehydrated, dizzy, trashed, sick to stomach. FML for sure. 7:06 avg for the run. Kind of forced this run. Most likely would have been better off just bagging running today. But wanted to hit that 100 mile week... because it looks good on paper:). I guess...

Maybe the worst tempo of my career:) Warmed up out to Staheli farm then planned on a 7 mile tempo down to around River roadish. I struggled from the very first step. Breathing was hard, rhythm was robotic, dizzy, weak, and no coordination. Stayed with the guys to around mile 2.5 or so. Then they slowly ran away. I wanted to just be done. But kept trying to work through it even though the times were rediculously slow. So the positives is that I stuck out the whole 7 mile tempo on a 84 degree-humid morning. The negatives are that I have issues and the pace was too slow to even blog. It seems that over the last 4 weeks I've progressivly gotten way slower each week. WTF?

143 lbs after- only thing that was positive. finally got weight down.

4.7 mile on the treadmill tonight. Still feeling pretty rough. Not exactly sure what's the matter with me. But I was able to get a good sweat going on the machine while jamming to Rage Against the Machine.

But ended the run with this groovy tune from years back. I hadn't heard it in years but in the last few days it keeps randomly coming up on my shuffle. It has a calming but fun feel. Makes me feel good.. and helped put Halen to sleep the other night up in Brian Head. Plus the video is great and I'm not even into skateboards.

Marathon training loop with the Circle minus Log (as in Logan and not a tree) and the addition of James. Kept it super chill through the first 8 miles. Then got a drink and GU. For the remainder of the run we kept it honest but not hard. Pace was between 6:15-6:35ish on in. Ended with a 6:50 avg for the run. Felt much better today than I have all week prior. Although not amazing. Only had a dizzy light headed spell around mile 18 and it only lasted for about a mile. So much better than it has been and hope it will continue to progress.

Off the subject. I listened to Neil Young's "old man" on the drive over to the DC before the run. And at 4:40 a.m hearing him master the guitar it made me really want to learn how to pick on one... AND a banjo as well. I also fell victum to advertising and bought the new Gillete proglide flexball razor. WOW is all I can say. Best shave of my life. Totallyworththecash

Little shake out/ gauge/ question and answer/ mini tempo workout thing. I am registered for the Dnews half on Thursday. But have ZERO confidence in actually RACING. So  I just wanted to see what the body had in it after feeling sickly all last week without going into the tank too much.

Wamred up all around B-hills and ended up at mile 7 up by the two churchs on Brigham road. Decided to tempo from there down and around the park and back over by the house. Just get in three miles and see how things felt doing it.

Went 5:34, 5:36, 5:32- First mile could have been much faster because theres some good downhill but I just tried to really stay smooth. Second mile is the hardest on paper and times show it. Third has some mild climbing, some flat and mild down.

Anyways in the end I was happy to feel a lot better than last week. But still have Zero confidence in really racing up in SLC. But I'm already registered and already have other plans while being up there. So maybe I'll just do it as a glorified workout.

Joined Log and Stephen for Tuesday tempos. Only I just planned on doing the warm up with them. Then I cut back through the fields and met them at River Road to re-join for the cool down. Temps were CRAZY nice. 66 F!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Felt like Heaven. Best morning all summer- and in July nonetheless. Not very often do I say I wish I was doing my tempo. But today I really wish I would have been doing some kind of workout. It really doesn't get any better than today in the summer. Sometimes in October (like in 2011) it's 75 F or so... Anyways as you can tell I LOVED it and needed it. Legs felt like rail road ties after April worked the shiz out of them last night. I expected it. Slow and EZ this morning @ a 7:20 avg.

I have ZERO expectations for the race tomorrwo. All I know is I'll control what I can. Get there early... get a good warm up in... lots of pre potty stops. Then see what happens. Main goal is to stay on the bus the entire time and not decided to jump off early.

Well... Honestly I'm pretty happy with this considering on paper the time looks slow. But for as sick and messed up as I have been the last two week and the lack of real workouts and downhill running. Today was a positive step. You have to race often to race well... I always say. So call it a glorified workout or whatever. But I was happy to run some good miles 1-8 and then keep working and not give in after that.

I was pretty upset when I was driving from Draper up to the bus pick-up. It was 3:30 a.m and the temp read 86F... you have got to be kidding me? Thats one of the reasons I wanted to do this race was to get out of the heat. And it turned out to be hotter than any workout so far this year in the STG. FML for sure on that one.

I got on the first bus leaving and had plenty of time for 3.5 really solid trips to the potty and 4.5 miles of running warm up. It was hot though and no warm up was really needed. Finished with the warm up in time to top off with a good drink and take a gu. Good thing because I forgot to take a second and I think it really hurt me after mile 8.

Anyways the race started on time. Smile. From the gun about 7 guys took off HARD. Then a few others were up there and even a chick. Justin, Steve and I took the first mile pretty smooth. It felt like I was holding back and still hit a 5:06 mile. I don't want to know what the lead pack hit. I was in around 12th place in the first mile but quickly slid into about 6th.

Worked through the canyon trying to run the tangents as close as possible and trying to dodge the headwind in any way possible. I hate wind. I just pounds my spirits. Both while running or in every other part of life. But splits seemed to be coming off pretty good and I didn't focus too much on it. Took water at ever aid station and put most of it on my head.

As we came out of the canyon at around mile 6 my breathing was way too hard. heart rate was too high and I had no balance.... or feel for what was happening. I tried to relax and Justin came up to me. At the time I was in 4th then to 5th behind Justin. Anyways I thought he'd just blow by as I was just kind of chillin and trying to find some rhythm. And for the next two miles or so I was able to just sit there with him. That was nice. I got some positive mojo back and felt like I might be able to really work the ending miles... Well between mile 9-10 I lost the confidence and Justin had pulled up on me by about 50 seconds. Mile 11 was no better as he was now about 65 seconds up and I looked back to see no one. So I just thought "5th it is". And kind of gave up the chase. Time or place were never a goal today. So I'm ok with both.

Hope to progress from this. Get some real workouts to fall down in the STG and maybe run another half in a month with some real "racing" goals.

Cooled down with Justin for 2.8 around the park. Then did some more getting back to the car.

The worst part of the day came during the cool down when my stomach really started to rumble. Since then I've been on the throne more than 15 time with lots of blood mixed in and coming out. Sorry it's gross but there's no pretty way to talk about it. Had crazy bad stomach cramping/ sick symptoms all day. I feel horrible. Like maybe worst post race stomach issues ever. Even worse than Hobble in 07. And that was bad before, during, and after.  So another FML there.

Had the course @ 13.17 and I hit ALL the tangents. FYI

Nice race Clyde. If you're looking for another half, you should really consider Top of Utah! I know you ran it a few years ago coming off an injury. But if you're feeling good, you can really hit a good time there. Usually it has very nice temps and some tailwind for 1-2 miles out of the canyon (and by some I mean a ton).

Ran south to the Porter Rockwell trail then over to the Draper park until I was out 6 miles. Then back. There was a house on fire up on the hill and it made for lots of trucks and service vehicles screaming up and down the roads. Then tons of people going up to look. And lots of ash in the air. I saw a snake on the trail too. Snakes are so so so so so so creepy. I was on high alert the rest of the run- I hate snakes. Just took it super EZ. 7:14 avg for the run. I felt  pretty good overall in the legs. But around mile 9 my stomach started to be really queezy again. From there to the finish it was smooth, ez, and shallow breaths. Justin picked me up in Draper and we drove down to AF to join some Utah county boys. I'm bad with names but... Matt Poulsen and co. Their plan was to do a warm up. Which ended up being 6 miles. Then do a 3 mile tempo. Then 6 miles at like 6:20 pace. Then another 3 mile tempo. Justin and I didn't know about doing any tempo but after the warm up I couldn't not try. So we started the tempo with Matt and (other little fast dude). About 1.5 into it my quads were really feeling the soreness from Thurdays race and I decided to back off. Justin came up and we ran together to finish off the 3 mile tempo in a 5:33 avg. Then we started the 6:20 miles and both of us decided we wanted no part of the last 3 mile tempo so we just ran the last 11 miles at a 6:22 avg and hit 20.

It was a good morning. Good to go out and meet some new guys. I think we started with about 8 in the group. Got in some really good miles and a lot better than if I'd have gone solo. Then the group went to the Sev (7-11) for a post run slurpee. My fav.

Thanks for the run guys! And thanks to Justin for driving me down there and back. Plus temps were nice and cool compared to Thursday morning. Legs are pretty sloppy though and quads are sore. Glad tomorrow is a day off.

Out and back over to the DC and up to the corner. Overcast and smelled of rain but no luck. Pretty humid... ok very humid. Over all the legs felt pretty good for a Monday. Both hammies are super sore so I'll have to spend some time on the sawhorse. But quads feel much better than on Saturday.

Thoughts- I think I have the opposite of the rainy day blues. More like I wish it would rain so so so bad. It's so dry and we haven't had any real rain since... I don't know when. wouldlovemesomerain

Also I hate. I mean I HATE fireworks. It seems since the 4th of July they've been going off here and there. Such a stupid waste of money... for anyone. FACT. Plus in these crazy dry conditions I don't know why it's even allowed. It's not if but when a big fire will start from them. In fact I think that big one up above Hobble Creek was started by teens this weekend. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

And last I'm just sorry, sad, and puzzled at the events of the weekend here in STG. Guess in some ways we never really know why things happen. My heart goes out to the Lusk family in loosing thier wife and mom. But I don't know them. I also hope the best for Dave and Ally and their family. As Ally was there. Running with Terri. Had to hold her friend and neighbor as she basically died. So tragic. It's just bouncing around in my brain over and over. Everyone be safer out there.... last summer it was Braydon on the bike. 5 mile tempo basically around the Mayors loop from the DC up to river road and around. I felt fantastic for .25 and then... Reality set in and I felt normal tempo shiz. My quads are cramping up sooooo fast lately. They just feel horrible/ flat/ dead WAY too fast into workouts. Guess I'll blame it on the heat. IDK.  Ended up finishing the 5 miles at 5:36 avg. Ran from up by Veyo down through Gunlock and into Ivin's with the club. The good news was it was raining up at the start. Felt soo good. Everyone was complaining that the rain sucked and it was cold and that this was "crazy" to be out running...  for some reason it just bugged me. It's like what do you want? 85 F, hot and muggy. You get that kind of reaction with club members. Not to be mean but they don't appreciate "good" days like members of the Circle. Steve and Haydo were there and it helped settle me down as we took off and left the group to have them there. Anyways long rant. But I was pissy. On little sleep. Up at 3:40 and just wasn't in the mood.

So the first 7-10 miles we had a really nice rain to run in. Stephen kept pushing the pace. Fast and hard early. I knew I was gonna struggle early on as the warm up miles felt hard and my legs were just junk. After hitting mile 10 I got my drink and Gu. Kind of thought about trying some kind of workout. But I just could NOT get my legs going. 6 min pace felt like I was running 100's on the track. I tried for 3-4 miles to get some turnover and only hit like 6:02 on thos miles. So after that I bagged it. By 16.5 I wondered if I could even finish the run and wished I'd have had Hayden come back in his truck and pick me up after he got done. But I just kept plugging a long and finally finished. 6:24 avg for the run.

Need to mix it up or something. Gonna try and have a recovery/fix it week next week. Whatever I'm doing it's not working. Hopefully I can get on the bike or at least the spinner a few times because I'm not happy with how running is going right now.

The first 8-10 miles were VERY slow and EZ at what we will call LOL pace. Lots of smart, well thought out, wise and useful adult conversation going on. A few times one or more of us were laughing so hard we were almost on the ground. We had GU and drinks at mile 8 but still never picked up the pace. From like 12-16 we got a little faster but still very gabby. Had another GU and water stop at mile 16. From there in pace got a little more formal. But never into full on hammer mode. Fastest mile for me of the day was mile 23@ 5:43 pace. I wanted to just get in the downhill. But from the Y' down to Ivins I did want to run better than I did last week. Held a decent pace to Ivins park or basically mile 25. Then the Circle went over to the splash pad and got soaked in water. From there back to Log's house I just tried to semi cool down and relax. Felt good at the end. Not dead at all. Not really sore either. Much, much, much better run than last week on a similar route. The downhill legs are coming around... but there's lots of work to do.

DC loop. Could not get out of bed this moring. Just felt trashed. Finally got out at around 7:30 and was thankful for the overcast that kept the sun away. Temps were warmer at 77F but it didn't feel too bad. Pace was very slow and I didn't feel very sore from Saturday but I did feel worthless. Legs were bricks. After 5.5 miles or so things started to feel better and I was able to get into a little grove to the finish. No goals this week for mileage. So we will see how that goes...

5.8 miles on the treadmill tonight. Got into some old skool Motley Crue videos on youtube. Rocked them for a while longer than I originally planned on staying on the machine. #girlsgirlsgirls #kickstartmyheart #wildside

Tried to hit a good tempo this morning... It had rained through the night which was awesome but it made it crazy humid and muggy. On the warm up I was dripping wet. But was still positive I could pull of something in the tempo.

5:39, 5:25, 5:22, 5:40, 5:40 for the .7

So I started off pretty smooth but then felt the legs kind of want to go. I let them. Logan was close through 2 miles but at 3 I couldn't hear him anymore. Then when I got to the U turn onto the trail I looked back and saw no one... I knew something was up. But thought I'd keep rolling since I was feeling ok. Got through mile 4 and felt pretty good on the trail. Then went past the power plant and in the lights couldn't see the guys at all. Once I got to the main road below Costco I was worried and stopped. Waited for a second then turned around to go see what was up. Logan came shortly and said he decided to shut it down. It was crazy muggy... like HELLAMUGGY. And none of us were recovered or ready for tempo after our marathon on Saturday. Dave came a little later and he was done tempoing too. So from there on back we just ran and pulled the plug on doing more "tempo". Overall I did feel pretty good. Could have kept it rolling for another couple for sure. But sometimes you just feel like enough is enough. #learntoliveanotherday

7 more miles this evening. Temps were doable with cloudy skis and a breeze. Just took it pretty EZ.

Hey lone faithful! Looks like I am running on my own this weekend.

Race: Wayne Co Fair Sprint Tri (11 Miles) 00:45:00, Place overall: 1
Total Distance
13.00

Warmed up by riding from Torrey up to the pool for 8.5 miles with the headlight. Used my sweet Ogio tri bag and hauled the rest of my gear up too. Then ran 2.2 miles before the race started at 7 a.m. Temps were 55F. Nice to run in. But cold coming out of the water. However the pool was warm.

The swim was kind of hard/sucky/idk. Sucked in way too much water on all the turns. Havent swam since STG 70.3 in 2013. But it was short and finally got over. I was second out of the pool. Passed the lead guy in transition but a chick passed both of us and she was first off on the bike.

The bike was an out and back 8 mile rolling hill course. I passed the girl after .05 miles. Tried to just ride as hard as possible. Knowing that if I killed the bike... even if I died. No one would out run me. In the end I put about 4 min's on the other riders chasing on the bike course.

Hit the run pretty solid too. Having had zero tri training with bike and running mixed the legs turned over pretty good. I didn't have a watch or garmin all day so there are no splits, overall time... nothing. forgot to charge. Ended up winning by around 10 min's. Then did some more running to cool down and road back to Torrey. So a ride, run, swim, ride, run, ride type morning.

Had fun. Entry was $5 and I got $15 for winning. So I guess I'm worth about $10 an hour for my efforts.

6 more miles tonight up Sandcreek and around Torrey. Temps are lovely.

Got up to Loa in time to do about 9 miles to warm up. Then the kids race started first so I got in another waiting. It's so very hard for me to run good here. The elevation of the race is from 7,100-7,300 ish. First mile climbs out out town. After about .6 into the race I started to feel totally "DEAD". Like done. Really struggled to even finish. Won but didn't have much of a field of seasoned runners to outrun.

Entry was $10. For winning I got a year of free entry to Wayne High sports activities... Not much use to me in STG. So I sold it to a friends dad for $30. A good deal for him and some spending cash for me to buy lunch with. :)

Went to the parade after where my Grandma who is 97 year old was honored as the Grand Marshal and the oldest living graduate from WHS. As WHS is celebrating it's 100 years... She graduated in 1935. The had her ride in a Razor side-by-side for the parade. She wore some cute white gloves like a princess. She was cute. I love her. She's actually my great-grandma but I lived with her and my great grandpa in high school. She's a trooper and a half. My kids have a great great grandma alive and still living by her self. Goes up and down stairs... steep stairs too. sheisawesome. highergenes

50.4 mile bike ride this afternoon with my friend Rocky. It was fun for us to ride here in the valley of our youth. It was hot and sunny though as we didn't get out until about 3p.m. I'm kind of sun burnt from a full day in the sun. The ride was pretty chill. like 19 mph avg.

Tempo Tuesday. 4.4 mile warm up to Stucki. It was super muggy again and around 72F. Just didn't have much today. Actually I haven't all summer. Really struggling to hit any positive workouts. Once we hit Riverside Dr there was bad headwind. Then I thought I'd finally get rolling once on the trail but it was muddy and had started raining so it was super slick. Anyways I did put in the whole 8 mile tempo but only hit a 5:45 avg during it. Logan looked good though and is running strong!

The cool down was all in a nice rain storm. Felt great. Been raining all moring too. Much needed and wanted water.

4.4 around LV tonight. Didn't really want to but couldn't pass up the cool afternoon after the rain storm. Just kept it EZ.

Didn't ever feel smooth. Really need to find a way to dial it in better in the coming weeks. Force some kind of peak...

4.4 around LV tonight. I had rained about 20 min's prior. But I was late getting out. So I got the sunny/humind version. The run was short so it wasn't a biggy.

Tempo with Steven. Ran about 4 miles over to the DC and then a little more with the club to warm up hitting 5.16 total warm up miles.

Did the mayors loop tempo and told myself I'd go at least 6 miles of tempo...maybe 7. Mission accomplished! Went 7.1 miles @5:40 avg. A little faster than the other morning with the Circle and I felt much much more in control. Went out way fast with a 5:19 first mile but then settled down and ran pretty even the rest of the way.

3.14 mile cool down back home after.

Weight this week, M- 146.5, Tues- 144, W-143.5, Th- 143.0

My weigt is down... my miles have been solid all summer. So now I just have to find a way to run tempo/race pace. Marathon pace is the goal... and I don't think I'll pull off any good half's in the coming weeks. It seems half marathon pace is killing me. But if I can settle down maybe I can run MP.

Crazy, crazy, crazy dreams last night. Lots on my mind. Having a hard time processing what's happening.

Cooler morning but still feels more humid than reg... isn't the old saying "it's hot... but it's a dry heat?" idk but it's been pretty muggy this summer. Run was a sleepy mix of everything. Over to the freeway then up by Southgate golf course and around the dealerships. The back to the DC and home via the park. Felt pretty slow. 7:13 avg proved it to be true.

Goal was to do the Utah county guys workout. 3 mile warm up. 3 miles at 5:30 pace. 8 miles at 6:00 pace, 3 miles at 5:30 pace. Then cool down. That was the goal...

It's been cool all week. Muggy but cooler. Today ways 76F on the way over just before 4a.m and 73F when we were finished. &MuggyAsHell

We met at the DC and warmed up the river trail to River Road and one more mile for three total.

First 3 mile tempo set was @ 5:28 avg. Logan took it out fast... too fast. I hit 5:23, 5:23, and like 5:34. Once back at the DC I thought about just bagging the rest of the day.

Next was the 7.3 mile tempo @ a 6:01 avg down into Bloomington and around that loop and back. We talked and decided to just to this loop and be a little shorter than the planned 8 miles. No biggie here. Felt pretty strong through this section. Thought maybe we were going a little faster than the times showed... but itiswhatitis

Once we got back to the DC I had to stop for a potty break. Dave said he was just gonna keep rolling right into the last 3 mile section. So Logan, Steve and I stopped. Once we got running again the legs didn't want to go fast anymore. So we just did 7 min pace. Logan turned around after only a mile or so. Steve and I took it back up to 3.5 miles out. I had two more potty stops and finally decided I'd try some more tempo on the way back.

Felt so worn down and done that my main goal was to do like ONE more mile at around 5:50 pace... maybe make it to River Road for 1.5 miles.

However we got going and the legs seemed to turn over. And Steven made a solid push that I had to match and I hit the first mile in 5:11. Steve started to fall off around that point and I wanted at least one more. So I kept it going down past the Dr's Free Clinic and ended with a 5:22 avg for that 2 mile section to close it. Should have just done one more... but I was over joyed to have gone faster than 6:00 pace for more than a mile.

Cooled off 1.5 miles back to the DC and really felt wasted. Worked has hard this morning as I have in any workout in a long long time. Three workouts this week. Muggy temps. 100 mile week... Glad it's done.

Tempo Tues

Warmed up out to Stucki Farms with the Circle. We all talked about how much fun we are having "training" right now. And how we want to do this FOREVER. ;) Temp was a 78F when we left the cul de sac at 4:50 a.m. I just wish once that on a "workout" morning we could get some cool crisp air.

Anyways after the warm up we got going. My watch battery died yesterday and it resets all the functions. So I didn't get any splits. But right out of the hole the pace felt fast. I felt like my breathing was off and was working pretty hard. For the most part we all were right with one another. Dave ran like he can this morning and put the hammer down. I finished about 3 seconds behind him. Logan had a rare "off" moring for tempos and around mile 6 Dave and I caught and passed him. He must have forgotten his roids today;).

Flet like I ran good. Pushed through some hard spots where my stomach felt like crap. Ended with a 5:37 min mile avg.

Cooled down back and my stomach was B. A. D.

DC loop this morning. It was the morning after... a hard hard hard rain. It was awesome and dropped a lot of water. The river was a good 4-5 times normal size and that was at like 7:30 this morning. Hours after the rain had stopped. It also really cooled the temps of leaving it around 63F. I enjoyed running around seeing all the sand, gravel and ish washed here and there from the nights storm. The running part was back seat to the "exploring".

7.1 miles around the middle B-hills loop and Secret St. Got in a few more tonight. Haven't got in a double all week and need a couple to keep things in check this week before the race on Saturday. My plan all summer was to do this new race as my STG tune up. The last couple weeks I've been kind of second guessing myself and wishing I'd done Hobble or TOU half. Been soo negative about my choice to run this. First year race... Hot temps... Pretty fair if not challenging course after the first 4 miles. But in the end I'm happy with my choice to stay here and run. Hats of and special thanks to Steven and Kendra and the running store for a super job orginizing what will be a great annual race here in town.

I had my alarm set for 3:30 a.m to give myself enough time to "wake up" and take care of business for the 6 a.m starting time. However I woke up at 2:30 to go to the restroom and never could relax and fall back a sleep. So at 3:15 I got out of bed. Got dressed and went outside to jog a mile to get the process "going". It felt hotter than it's been. Temp said 71F and I was sweating by the time I got back home after only a mile. Bad sign... Went through the rest of my nomal pre race morning ish and left to catch the 4:45 bus up to the start.

Dave and I did 3.2 miles of warm up and it again felt hot up there. More negative thoughts. But I wanted to make the best of the day and before the gun went off I had ample potty stops in  and felt ready to do my best.

From the gun Dave and I took of and never had anyone else to worry about.

1. 5:06- This is just a fast steep downhill.

2. 5:06- More of the same downhill but a good climb for .3ish at the end. So this mile could have been smokin.

3. 5:16- net downhill but with some rolling. Feeling ok but at times I feel like I may be going too fast. But don't dare back off because Dave is right there pushing on the gas.

4. 5:10- One small little up through the houses and then some fast downhill to the bottom and river. Dave and I are together as we start the begining of the trails.  Saw Mik'L and Myler and got a drink and Gu.

5. 5:22- Mesquito trail. This is the best I've EVER run this section of trail. Started to pull away from Dave.

6. 5:24- End of Mesquito trail over to the townhomes by the river trail. Again this is the best I've ever ran through here. And as we have dropped down by the river I'm not as hot anymore. It's still dark out too.

7. 5:27- Down the river trail and through the construction to about the T' where the other trail connects. This was a solid mile through here as I hit plenty of mud through the construction area and... slowed to try and get it off my shoes once the trail was clear.

8. 5:25-  Through the big turn on the river trail and ended just a little abover where our tempos end. Starting to get more light. Still feeling pretty strong. Haven't once looked at the watch or pace. So I could have been running #whoknowswhat

9. 5:31- Down uner River road and up to about the Dr's free clinic.  Got another drink at the Dr.s Free pull out. Feeling strong. No stomach issues. Smiles.

10. 5:37- From Dr's free down to about .4 above the DC.  Saw Myler again yelling at me.

11. 5:34- Down through the DC and over the bridge under the freeway.  For the first time while going over the wood bridge I get to look back and see where Dave is... I don't see him. Puzzled because I thought I had just heard his footsteps behind me.

12. 5:33- Basically from the freeway down a mile. Still felt good and although I wasn't being pushed I wanted to keep pushing myself. Felt like I could. Legs felt strong.

13. 5:37- Down to Man-o-war bridge and off the trail. 90 degree trun east to the park. Had a hard time keeping the pace twisting through the parking lot and making the turns. But at no point did I feel I was tired or ready to stop digging.

.13 @ 5:24 pace. Through the dirt and onto the grass. No struggling finish. Felt great! Awesome finishline stuff too.

So for very low expectations... I came out pretty happy with the morning. Felt like it was a much better race effort than I gave at DesNews half in July. And I feel this is a slower overall course than that one... but conditions today were better here than they were there. Cooler and no headwind. I'm happy to get some positve running mojo going.... I needed it. Decided this moring to just #Goforit!

4 mile cool down with Dave. Now the stomach is starting it's post race junk and I had multipal trips to the potty for the rest of the day.. FML for sure on that one.

Semi longish run with the Circle. Logan tried to ruin it for everyone by being weird. I don't know what his deal is.;) Nonetheless it was a special morning running down our home marathon course. We haven't been on it all summer and it's past time. Just took it EZ all morning. The main focus was to just get in the downhill running. We started in Veyo and ended at the church on Bluff. It was dark for at least 10 mile of the run. None of us had headlamps (we never do). There was construction barrels everywhere and LOTS of northbound traffic. Like more than I can ever remember. About a mile atop Veyo hill I was thinking "one of us is gonna run into one of these barrels".  Because it's dark... and we are dodging cars. Well about 2 steps later I slammed into on. Full stride. No heads up. Faceplant. Both hands ended up bloody. I used a four letter word. And the guys laughed. Hard. #effingAholes ;) Other than messing up my only two hands pretty good. I'm fine. So don't worry. Picked myself up and got back on.

Finished the run at a 6:45 avg. Laxi Taxi morning. Glad to get the run in.

Tempo Tuesday on Thursday

Had a pretty good one today. Temps was 69 F at 4:50 when we left and continued to drop throughout the run. This helps tons!!! Wamed up out to Stucki and kept having stomach cramps. Finally out there I got in a good pre tempo #2 stop.

We got going and it was fast from the first mile. Logan kept the foot on the gas pushing me through miles 1,2,3 and into 4. I was really happy how I ran today following the race on Saturday and then the run down the course on Monday. Miles 5,6 are always hard on Mesquito and Riverside. I also couldn't see the guys any more and wondered if they'd stopped. So I kind of slowed thinking maybe I should turn around. But decided to just keep going. Then I wanted to try and get it going faster on the trail on miles 7,8. Didn't really do so on 7. Don't know why as I felt pretty good still but mentally just lost focus. Then on the last mile Steven came running up the trail and as I passed by him he flipped and started chasing me. I didn't know it was him and thought it was Dave or Logan comming back to me. So that helped me get the pace back.

Ended with a 5:34 avg for the 8 mile tempo. Not too shabby on this course. Staying out on Riverside is tough.

5:27, 5:21, 5:20, 5:33, 5:46, 5:46, 5:49, 5:34

The blue Pegasus shoes have been awesome. But today they started to feel like they are on the way out. I've loved the new Pegasus though.

Alarm set for 3:30... but I have this sick and twisted thing in my life that makes me wake up one hour before any alarm. So at 2:30 a.m I got up went to the restroom and was... up. FML

Long run down the marathon course. Second longish run down it in 5 days. I kind of wanted to do a 4 mile, 8 mile, 4 mile tempo workout today. But after only about 3 miles I decided to bag it and just go a little longer. Just wasn't feeling it today. At all. Had some mexican food last night. Large combo plate... made for 5+ star morning. Got to clean up the diet next week for sure.

Anyways Aaron and Steve basically took off right out of the car. I thought even if I do run hard today I'll warm up first. But after 8.9 miles and our water bottle stop I wasn't into it. So Logan headed out to get a progression run in and I just made my way down the course. Fastest mile of the day was 5:56. Once I got to Bluff St. I was basically at mile 17 and I took a left up over Red Hills PKWY and followed the Ironman course to it's turn around. Then I dropped down around Dixie St and back up around the park to extend it to 23.25 miles for the run. Hit a 6:30 avg today. Nothing fast... but kept it honest and got some good miles on the legs to finish off a solid week since the half last Saturday.

146 lbs after. Wish it would have at least gave me one more pound off... Feeling too heavy heading into the weekend.

Tempo Tuesday...

There once was a boy who got up early and met his buddies for a tempo run. He wanted to run strong. He felt like things were moving in the right direction. But... his morning turned out to be a total train wreck. It was CRAZY muggy and that might just be this boy's kryptonite. The warm up felt hard. The first mile or so of the tempo the breathing was way too hard. And by mile 4 it was over.  He tried to keep battling all the way through mile 8 but effort was hard and splits were ugly. The other boys ran away down the dark trail and this boy had to run all by himself... It was sad. Just totally cramped up. Made some hammer fizz drink before the run. But forgot to drink it. That could have helped. IDK. Hopefully next time turnes out better.

Long run down the marathon course. Met Aaron at the finish line at 4:45 and caught a ride up with some people I don't know. I was just happy to snag a freebie and not have to drive back up.

My goals for this morning were. 1- get some faster downhill miles in (how many I wasn't sure), 2- DO NOT OVERDUE IT!!!!!

Got out of the car and started the run with a 6:16 warm up mile. That's how it goes when you run with Aaron. Hit the first 10 miles pretty uptempo and picked Steven up a long the way. After GU'ing up and a potty stop I was ready to do some kind of pick up/ workout/ tempo thing. And at mile 10 we started. Kept a solid push all the way into town to mile 20. Never redlined it. Never felt out of control. Just relaxed, yet dialed in. Splits: 5:09, 5:16, 5:29, 5:25, 5:19, 5:32, 5:30, 5:22, 5:15, 5:22

The first mile might have been fast. But I went out with Aaron up pulling me. I felt pretty good and the pace didn't feel this fast. I would have guested at the time we were only going 5:25 or so. Everything else felt very smooth. Past Winchster through the S's I really just ran EZ as those miles are much faster than my times. Then the last 3 miles through town I did try and hold something harder. Logan ran strong last week on the closing miles and I wanted to do the same. Pretty happy with the finish as I felt great. Not dead, sore or jacked up at all. Jogged .5 cool down and called it a day.

Ended the 20.5 mile run in 1:59:11 or a 5:48 avg.

Pretty happy to have turned the corner after feeling SOOOO worthless earlier this week. Time will tell if I am sore or not next week. But I'm looking on the bright side this time.

Tempo Tuesday/ Workout with the Circle

I didn't want to do the same old tempo loop. Just sick of it more than anything. So I talked the guys into meeting at the DC and we did a 2x4 mile workout with 6 min jog in the middle.

Warmed for 4 miles out and back. Temps were ok. 70F. By the river it felt a little cooler. But I'd still like it much cooler when I try and run hard. The plan was to go clock wise from the DC up the river trail and around the mayors loop to the 4 mile mark. Then jog 3 min's out and 3 back. Then come back counter clock wise for the last 4 mile set.

I didn't reset my watch after the first set so I just have the avg for all 8 miles at 5:33 pace. Goal was to be about 5:30 pace. So a little slower and I'm fine with that. The bad thing was I just felt forced almost the entire workout. The 4th mile about killed me and I was soooo thankful for that 6 min jog to recover. Legs just cramped way too fast. But I knew I wasn't totally recovered from Saturday as the calves and quads are both still sore.

In the end I'm just glad I didn't bail early. Pushed through. It wasn't pretty. Nothing special. But for me most aren't.

145.5 lbs after run.

30.2 mile ride on the Venge this afternoon. Left a little after 2p.m and it was 100F and when I got back it was 103F. Not complaining. Just facts. Out through the fields to the big hill before Sand Hollow. Then back around the airport. Another pretty honest ride. I did take the last couple hills EZ in the small ring. But I was basically out of water and what I had left was boiling in my non-insulated clear (green house effect) bottles.

Decided to pass on another run this afternoon. Was short on time and just couldn't be bothered with it.

Big boys Marathon Prep class today.

Last week I ran the same course at a 5:48 avg for the run and felt smooth and rockin. Today I ran a 6:05 avg and felt like crap. The whole run. From the very start. Temps were warmer today than the last couple weeks but overall I just felt wore out and run down. Glad today wasn't race day...

Anyways after a 4 mile warm up we started the 4 mile, 8 mile, 4 mile workout.

I didn't want to do it from the start and let the first mile slip by at 6:21, Tried a little harder on the next to hit 5:48. By then the guys were way up on me. Tried harder on the last couple miles hitting a 5:24, 5:15 to almost reel them in before stopping at our water and GU.

8 mile set at 6 min pace. Nothing fancy here. Just rolling a long but the pace didn't seem to be that fast. I just felt like I couldn't go fast at all. But we basically hit our marks.

On the last 4 mile set I didn't feel better. But wanted to "push" out whatever I could and make the best of it. Went 5:16, 5:12, 5:12, 5:27. On the last mile I almost got hit by not one but two cars while I crossed the blvd and slowed down. After that I never got the same flow again. But overall happy to have closed it out and logged something for the bank...

Warmed up from the DC over around Southgate GC for 3.6 miles

Plan was to do a 5 mile MP temp around the mayors loop clockwise. Then do a one mile jog recovery and then a 2 mile LT tempo from the DC up to River Road

First 5 mile tempo seemd so so. Not bad. Not great. I just hung back and while Logan kept the foot on the gas. So I'd push a little and close the gap. Then back off a little. Seemed that went on the whole time. Ended with a 5:33 avg for that section.

1 mile jog for recovery

2 mile LT tempo. Wanted to go out strong but knew following the 5 miler that I wouldn't be able to go for my PR of 10:13... plus it was dark. Like you can't see JACK for about 300m on one section in the first mile. So I went 5:10, 5:21 for a 10:31 2 mile. Pretty good for and basically hit the workout as I'd planned on doing. That's always a plus.

Logan ran great... again. He's been killing me in all the workouts. And for all the crap we give him... I think the SPECIAL LITTLE GUY is gonna ROCK the marathon. Maybe even PR. He's running greart and it's fun to see. A little hariy though and that part is gross.

Cool it on the yard work and home improvements this week will ya? Actually I'm just jealous because my yard has been neglected.

Looking forward to running with ya next weekend.

You've put together a great cycle of training and should be prime for a pr race!

Justin- after hitting it from 9:30 a.m to 11 p.m on Saturday... and feeling crazy sore and wasted. I decided no more this week. I'll have to finish it off next. But I'm impatient and it's hard to just sit and look at and unfinished project.

Trevor- Thanks man. Hoping for one. Just need my race day guy to show up. Fingers crossed...:)

DC loop. I wanted to get out a little harder... work out all the ish from the stomach and kind of wake up the legs. So after a 7:36 first miles I dropped the pace the rest of the run and ended with a 6:27 avg. Nothing too hard. Just a honest push to help me get into the running mind set my brain needs for the week. Felt pretty good overall. 60F out when I left the house at 7:00 a.m. Looks like it'll warm up by the weekend...

Last chance workout:)

Just did basically the same loop as yesterday with a little  more. After a 2.5 mile warm up I planned on doing 4x800m just out on the road as part of the loop. Hit all of them at 5:00-5:05 pace. The 2nd and 4th were both short at only .4 but I didn't really care. It was the thought that counted. Had about .2 jog between sets for recovery.

Flet so so I guess. Tapering blues have my legs feeling like rail road ties. But this was a good way to get things going. As I felt better after each one the more I did.

50 min's on the bike about 17 miles. Spun the legs out pretty good and worked up a giant sweat.

15 min's on the elliptical after. More loosening of the quads and hips. #tryingmybest

Benny boy Van came by this morning for a run. We looped B-hills. Hit a potty stop at the park and then back around. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Talked about the race on Saturday. We both are pretty pumped and ready to pounce. Should be a good one...

It was coldish. 49F and I started out with gloves.

4 miles on the treadmill this moring. Felt pretty good. Just went long enough to work out the stomach stuff and get a sweat rolling.

Hoping for some positive mojo... as luck would have it our baby girl had to be put into the hospital this morning. She's had bad colic for most her life. And the past 5 days or so had a fever and now is throwing up everything and dehydrated. Just the way I like to spend my pre race day... STRESSED OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just hoping for an honest effort tomorrow. I'm bib number 20 and my goal is to finish lower than my projected seed. I'd also like to close of my 10th consecutive STG Marathon with a sub 2:30. If I can do those two things it'll be a good day.

Well.. it's finally here on gone. It was a ok day. Not amazing. I really struggled on the last 5 miles and lost 3 places and a good 2+ min's. I really thought coming into this race I was ready for a little more. Mileage, workouts and even the half a month ago made me think a PR was gonna happen. But the stars didn't totally line up. That's racing. I'm happy I put it on the line. Worked hard. And got my main two goals. Best my #20 bib number in place, and go sub 2:30. I did really want to be in the top 10 but didn't know if it would happen today because of the deep field. But I some how hung on by a few seconds and grabbed that 10th spot. That was good.

Had the worst per race day ever on Friday. We not only had to put the baby in the hospital for dehydration and not eating. But she seemed worse and needed more tests. It ened up being serious because after I finished the race she had gotten a cat scan and found fluid on the brain, with a crack on the back of her skull... and maybe an older crack on the fornt. Plus she had a seizure this morning.... so she had to be life flighted to SLC and that's where we are now. Plus right before bed last night I found out a fellow STG cycling buddy had died from a scuba accident and they found his body yesterday. So in a small way I wasn't mentally "in" this race. Decided to do it and make the best of what I could.

half in 1:13:02- Felt totally in control through the fisrts half. In fact through 20. Never felt like I was overworking and even though at the half that I'd for sure be able to negative split by 2-3 min's on equal effort. But I hit the wall worse than I've ever done before and it was a suffer fest from 21ish or so in.

some key things. the race started like 20 min's late... that has never happened in all my 9 prior races here. A pretty big deal for me because I'd taken my caffine boost 45 min's before the planned 6:40 start. And I just stood there getting cold in the lay-over-time. I also had a pretty good fever. Baby Kaylor had one for the last 4 days and I picked it up Thursday night along with some body aches. Not a bid deal... but a deal. I don't know. It's so hard for me to have a race without some kind of * by it. I just needed and wanted ONE more clean, honset, test to race my brains out and see what I can really do. And I don't think today was ALL of that. And I don't know if I wanna keep trying either. SothatallSUCKS.

But I'm not bummed. Under the circumstances of the day. I did my best and that's all I could have asked of myself. For now I'm gonna have some down time to rethink what I want to do with running.

And hope for the some good news for baby KK.

It was 57 F when I left the house at 4:40 a.m to head over to the busses.

146 lbs when I got home. After yogurt, ice cream powerade, water and coke at the finish... and many many trips to the porta potty:(

Dude, you had a great race. You should be very happy with it, especially given the circumstances. My heart goes out to you and your family. I pray that things go well with your baby. Bummed that we won't see you at the banquet.

Take some time off and rest up. Wait a while before ya make any big decisions on your racing future. Again, nice work bro.

Take a few weeks from running, focus on the family and other hobbies and get that baby better. The enjoyment of running/racing will come back.

Great job Clyde! You are one tough dude and it's great to see you in that front pack. Thanks again for the ride in the morning. Not sure of which hospital you're at up here with your family but I'm like a mile away from primary children's during the week. I'd you need anything please let me know. Hoping everything will be ok with your baby.

Great race man. You're one tough dude to get out there and run so hard with what was going on. I hope you're little girl is doing better. Also, sorry about your buddy and his accident. That kind stuff hits ya in the gut when you're not ready.

Excellent race, Clyde. I sure hope your daughter is improving. You are one tough mother when it comes to racing. I firmly believe you have a lot more in the tank. Take some time to re-think and re-focus, but I believe your best races are ahead of you.
