Around two miles out, I decided I was feeling feisty and I started talking in a way that reflected my inner feistyness. Namely: "Too bad the construction work is blocking a good mile time trial course. It's such a nice day.(Relatively)" After about 1000 meters of running this was answered by:"We'll just add some."

| Race: |
Utah Valley 2012 10k (6.25 Miles) 00:38:42, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 2 | | Woke up at six A.M, got changed and ran about 0.8 to the start of the Utah Valley 2012 10k. I stayed with the leader until just before mile one, then my (treacherous) shoe fell off and I lost about ten seconds putting it back on. By that time the leader was out of reach. I forgot to bring a watch, and with no visible targets, challengers or any indication of the pace other than pain, I lapsed into the 6:10-6:20 pace range. I still had plenty of juice for a kick in the last 300, which suggests I could have gone faster. Total time was 38:42, about a minute slower than hoped for, but still a respectable time. Overall place was second. (Snicker. The only reason I placed so high with a 38:42, was because almost everyone really fast, all the "big guns", were competing in the half and full marathon. )

| | 4.2 with my younger siblings. Recovering from the 10k on saturday. |
| | Gone on wllderness survival camp. |

| Race: |
Wedding Bells 5K relay (3.107 Miles) 00:17:45, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 2
Me and my family did a 5k relay. All nine family members participated. Little 1 year old Stephen had the first two hundred meter leg in 1:41 (he got lapped). My 3-yearold brother, William, took the next two hundred meters in 1:12. Then my mom did two hundred in about 1:00. Next came the medium fast siblings: Jenny, Julia, Joseph and Jacob, each averaging about 5:30 pace for their 200s (41.25 200s). We actually made it to 1400 in 6:45. Not too bad considering the first quarter in 2:53 by William and Stephen. The remaining 3600 meters were left to me and my dad. We traded quarters, averaging 73s (4:54 pace), and started passing people like flies. Our finishing time ended up being 17:45.
| |
| | 6 miles in 46:30. First one with Jacob in 8:40. It was very hot. |
| | Ran to the Orem High track. Did a mile in 5:17. Splits were 79,80,81 and 75, plus two seconds fr the extra 9 meters. |
| | Six miles in 48:46. First mile with Jacob in 8:47. |
| | 6 miles in 43:55. Ariel was pushing the pace towards the end and I decided to drop him in the last quarter (1:29 uphill). |
| | Six miles today in 47:09. |
| | Six miles today in 44:00. |
| | Ran to the orem high track. Did an 800 meter time trial. Time was 2:23.1 (a PR by 9 seconds). My first quarter was in 70 with splits of 16, 18, 18 and 18. The second quarter was in 73 with splits of 18, 18, 19 and 18. Ran back and finished up with another 3 miles, ending up with about 6 total.
| |
| | Ran to the orem high track and ran with by brother Joseph as he did a quarter in 86 (a PR for him by 5 seconds). Ran back and did 4 more miles with my dad, then a mile with Mandy. Total distance ended up being 7 miles.
|
| | 6.8 miles in 51:14. I ran to about 2.25 with my dad, then I pulled him for a mile in 5;56 up the canyon. It felt like I was putting in about a 5:30 effort. Too stubborn to use a VPB, I took a 0.3 detour to use the restroom, then ran back. |
| | Six miles today in 46:09. |
| | First mile with Jacob in 8:23. Then 2 with Joseph in 17:21. Then finished up with three alone. Total time for 6 was 47:59. |
| | Drove up to the Provo canyon with my dad. I ran two warm up miles up the canyon, then did three down hard. My splits were 87, 82, 82, 82 (5:33 mile), 83, 89, 86, 87 (5:45 mile, 11:18 two miles (a PR for two miles)), 89, 90, 85 and 76! Turns out I had a kick after all! I did the last mile in 5:40 and the last half mile in 2:41. Total time for three miles was 16:58 (a PR). The last quarter in 76 was possibly the most miserable quarter of my life. I felt like throwing up for the last 1200. Anyway, the 6-minute mile guy and the 5:40 guy were shown who's boss. |
| | Six miles today in about 48:00. |
| | 6.4 miles with Clyde and my dad in 51:52. Never run in Saint George during the summer unless you absolutely have to, or unless you enjoy the heat. I'm on vacation to Saint George and at 5 in the morning, it was 80 degrees. Normally at that time it's in the 90's, so we got lucky. A rare breeze picked up for the last few miles so it wasn't too bad.
|
| | 6 miles in 44:55. Saw the orem track team a quarter before the turnaround and did about 1.6 at 5:40 pace chasing them down. |
| | Was on a camp out. Did about 6 miles in 48:36. |
| | 6 miles in 47:09, including one with Jacob in 7:40. |
| | Ran to the track, then did a quarter in 64.8, a PR. Jenny did a half mile in 3:12 (her PR). I ran back and finished up my run with Jacob and Joseph. |
| | Six miles today in 46:30. |
| | Drove to the track. Jacob did a mile time trial. He got 7:27, with splits of 1:52, 1:55, 1:50 and 1:47(!) plus 3 seconds for the extra 9 meters. This id Jacob's PR, and a family record for the age of five. Ran home and finished up my miles. Ended up with about an average of 8:00 pace.
|
| | 6 miles today in 44:04. Did 2000 in 6:30, dropping poor chad. Last mile of the 2000 was 5:08 (a PR). Last quarter was 70. Splits were 82, 80, then a 40 200 meters giving us a 3:22 split at 1000, then a 78 quarter, a 40 200 and the kick in 70. Last 600 was in 1:50. Last 200 was in 33. |
| | Ran to the track. Did 1200 in 3:45. Splits of 75, 74 and 76. It hurt. Julia did a quarter in 1:36 (her PR). Jenny did a quarter in 83 (her PR). Ran home and finished up with three miles, one of which with Jacob in 8:34. |
| | 6 miles in 45:59. Ran the last 0.23 of the Deseret News Marathon with my dad and siblings. |
| | 6 miles today. Ran to the track and back. Julia did a quarter in 91.6 (her PR). My younger siblings seem very exited about doing time trials. They keep volunteering. I finished up with 4 miles in 31:47.
|
| | At youth conference. about 3 miles in 25:26 with Brother Tobler. |
| | 4 miles in the morning at youth conference at about 7:30 pace. Finished up with two at home in 15:02. |
| | 6 miles today. Ran to the track and did a mile time trial. I ended up with 5:08.8. I did not know my splits until afterward, which in retrospect was a good thing. The splits were 77, 78, 80 and 73. I thought I was on track to break 5, which motivated my kick. If I had known the real splits, I think I would have been lucky to do 75 in the last 400. Ran home and finished up my miles.
| |
| | 9.3 miles today. Longest run ever. I helped pace Brother Gines to his 3 mile PR of 17:50. Mile splits of 5:58, 5:57 and 5:55. |
| | 7 miles today. Did 200 at the Orem High track in 29.1 (a PR). |
| | 7 miles today. Left for Bear Lake Scout camp. |

| | Got back from camp. Pretty tired. Ran 6.8. |
| | 7 miles today in about 53:30. Met two guys on the trail. They joined us for the first half mile of a mile and a half tempo. I got 8:23 for the tempo, with splits of 2:49,2:52 and 2:42. Legs felt stiff. |
| | Ran to Orem High and did the track team's workout with them.
|
| | Drove up to the parking lot about 3.2 from the house. Ran two miles up the trail with my Dad and Chad up to Nun's park. Then, after a quick restroom break, the fun (or pain, depending on your perspective) began. Me and Chad started our three mile race, with my Dad giving u a one minute head start. The pace felt brisk for the first half mile, but sustainable. I later learned we did 5:22 for the first mile, with even pacing. Around 1000 though, my left knee began to get sharp pains, and within 100 meters I knew I couldn't keep it up for much longer. After trying to force myself to keep the pace for another 200, I said a quick mental prayer that I would be able to keep running, and over the next 300, the pain slowly faded away. Around 800 to go I turned it on, and promptly dropped Chad. I ended up finishing in 16:26, ten seconds ahead of Chad. This is a PR of 32 seconds. Amazing what 7 miles a day does to you.
| |
| | 7 miles today in 55:41. Legs still sore from Saturday. |
| | 7 miles in about 56:00. Legs still sore from Saturday. |
| | 7 miles in 55:02. Did a fast 600 in 1:45. Splits were 35,36 and 34. |
| | 7 miles today. My dad decided to do have me do a surprise mile time trial. As we were jogging to the start, I tried to empty my mind of all thoughts. It worked! My splits were 76, 73, 73 and 70. I only felt like giving up around 600. Total time was 4:52.5 (a PR).
| |
| | 6.9 miles today. about 8:00 pace.
|
| |
7 miles today. Did a mile time trial at the Orem High track. Got 5:03. Splits of 75, 74, 78 and 75. There was a tail wind and the pacing was off on the third lap. Still it is a record of 5 seconds for a mile on the track. Jenny also did a time trial today. She got 6:42, her record by 10 seconds. Her splits were 1:38, 1:42, 1:43 and 1:36 plus a couple seconds for the extra 9 meters.
|
| | 7 miles today at my grandma's house. |
| | 7 mils today at my grandma's house. |
| Race: |
kiwanas park 2k (1.25 Miles) 00:07:01, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | A.M. Ran 3 easy miles. Did run the full 7 because of my race tonight. P.M. Drove over to kiwanas park in provo and warmed up about half a mile, then did some strides in my spikes. Yes, spikes. Crocs (unfortunately) do not get good traction on grass, so I use spikes in cross country races, but everything else I race in Crocs. There was a pretty weak field and around 300 into the race I took off and no one followed me. Despite taking an accidental detour, I ended up with 7:01, beating second place by ten seconds. It was really hot.
| |
| | Four miles total alone, both while waiting for my younger siblings to get ready, and while cooling down. One mile with Jacob in 8:01. Two miles with Joseph in 16:46.
|
| | Only four miles today, 2 with Joseph in 16:20. I'm a little bit under the weather. |
| | Three miles today at about 8:00 pace. I have a sprained wrist, and that was all my wrist could tolerate. |
| Race: |
Kiwanas Park 2k (1.87 Miles) 00:10:54, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | Three miles in the morning in 23:11. In the evening, I had a 3k cross-country race. Due to my sprained wrist and sore throat, I didn't think I'd do very well, but I decided to run nevertheless.
After about three hundred meters into the race, everyone else had dropped back except me and the leader. Not having the strength or the confidence to break away like I did last week, my plan was to draft behind him for as long as I could. Hopefully, I would make it to the kick. About 1000 into the race, I was feeling strong and tried to pass the leader, who was a short 12-year old with a really fast turnover. Kind of like Aiden Troutner, but faster. His face was flushed and he looked tired, but he managed to hold me off, so I decided to keep drafting and bide my time. Around 1800, I tried to pass him again, but again, he held me off. It was probably good I didn't, because we were about to hit the biggest hill on the course, and leading on the hill might be enough for him to pass me back. With 600 to go (2400 into the race), I made my move. I had survived the hill, even surging to wear him down. I think that was the best place to pass him, because the finish line blocked by the trees, there were no spectators cheering him on, and all the factors combined to demoralize him (Who says there's no child psychology in running?). I ended up with 10:54 and winning by 10 seconds. My wrist never bothered me once. Much more than I was expecting.
|
| | 7.5 miles today in 57:19, counting William's half mile in 5:11. |
| | 7 mile today in 56:10. ). 5 with William.
|
| |
Ran a mile or so to get to mile 23 of the Top if Utah marathon, then
ran to the finish with my dad, 'pacing' him and encouraging him to run
faster. He has paced me through countless time trials throughout my
childhood, so I thought I'd return the favor. After I got home, I finished up with three, doing Jacob's and Joseph's runs.
|
| | 7 miles today in 55:01. Two of them with Joseph in 15:52. |
| Race: |
Kiwanas Park 1k (0.624 Miles) 00:03:07, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | Three miles in the morning at about 8:00 pace. I had a 1k race in the evening again at Kiwanas park. There's not much to say. I sprinted from the gun and took the lead. No one followed me, and I ended up with 3:07. Second place was 3:26. Third was Kate Hunter, the overall female, chicking almost the entire field with 3:31. All my younger siblings except little Steven ran with varying degrees of success. Joseph won his age division. Jacob was fourth in the same division. His spikes were not good for him. Jenny got third, Julia won hers, and little William took seventh, getting booted out of the prizes.
| |
| | I ran 7 miles of misery today in 58:29. I think I was dehydrated and tired from the race. |

Kiwanas park 4k (2.5 Miles) 00:14:54, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
A.M. Three easy miles in about 24:00. P..M. Ran a 0.5 warmup and did some strides. From looking around at the competition, I had this suspicion that the winning time would be 14:45, and it was pretty close to that. From the start of the race, it felt too easy. By 200 meters, a leading pack of four had formed. Myself, Grant Gardner, Casey, and one other kid in a green jersey. Four is unusually large for a leading pack of a kids' race of that size. Then the messing around began.
Green jersey took the lead, and the rest of us happily tailed him. I think that me, Casey, and possibly Grant, could have broken away, but everyone was too scared of everyone else to make a break. We were all thinking "If I go ahead, someone will tail me and then out kick me. Better stay where it's safe." I tried a few surges, but when the others easily responded, I backed off. Around 1900 to go, my Dad yelled at me to drop everyone, so I surged. The course goes by the finish chute, then does another mile loop before actually finishing. So everyone, thinking it was the end and that I was just kicking, went after me. Green jersey actually sprinted into the finish chute a mile too early, and found to his dismay that there was still a mile to go. Our split at 1.5 was 9:22! (6:14 pace) That is some serious messing around. We were racing like they do in the Olympics (Much slower, of course, but the same concept.) The false kick wore green jersey out enough to make him drop back with 1300 to go. Then Grant took the lead for 200 meters, only to be passed by Casey, who was making his move with 1100 to go. I went after Casey. Grant tried, but being only twelve, he died around 900 to go. All this happened on the biggest, meanest, ugliest hill (which we had to run twice for the 4K, unfortunately) Then with 750 to go, I kicked. Despite my 1.5 miles of 'resting' at 6:14 pace, it was miserable. At 600 to go, the race director was standing on the side of the course. He shouted, "Now it's a real race!" I kept thinking Casey was catching me. My dad wasn't much help, shouting "He's catching you! He's catching you! Pick it up!" Casey was actually not catching me. I ended up gapping him by 5 seconds and narrowly winning.

kiwanas Park 3K (2 Miles) 00:10:42, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | A.M. 4 miles in about 31:17. P.M. Ran a warmup of about 0.5, then did a few strides. Right from the gun, one kid went out really fast. So fast, that I was worried about getting dropped. Fortunately, after a half mile, he slowed down to a more sane pace. I rested behind him for 300 meters, then surged to take the lead. While I was resting, Grant caught up to us and when I pulled away, he followed me. I led until there was about 1200 to go, then let Grant take the lead for the hill. Not very nice of me, I know, but I was trying to win. With about 800 to go, I kicked and ended up winning in 10:42 by 7 seconds. I think that's a course record for recent years. Cooled down for about a mile and a half with some other kids.

Kiwanis Park 1500 (0.93 Miles) 00:04:55, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | A.M. 4 miles in about 32:00. P.M. Went to Kiwanis park for a 1500 meter race. Warmed up about 0.5, and did a few strides. From the gun it was just me and Grant, who was determined to stick with me. Around 400 I went around a corner the long way and Grant passed me, conveniently taking the lead just before the big hill. I let Grant lead for 300 or so, then attempted to pass him and kick. He fought me for about 100, then started to drop back. I ended up winning in 4:55, by 8 seconds. Throughout the whole race, I felt like I wasn't effectively using my full leg strength. It was like I was locked into a certain pace, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not go faster. It's probably because I was running on grass. Cooled down about 1.5 with Grant, giving me a total of 7 for the day.
